In una fabbrica Tesla in Texas, un ingegnere è stato aggredito da uno dei tanti androidi che popolano l'azienda. Aumentano le preoccupazioni sui rischi rappresentati dall'intelligenza artificiale e dalle macchine automatizzate, più o meno sofisticate, nei luoghi di lavoro. Il patron di Tesla ha subito minimizzato l'episodio scaricando la responsabilità dell'incidente su un braccio robotico presente nelle fabbriche di tutto il mondo e scagionando la sua creatura, il robot umanoide Optimus. "È davvero vergognoso che i media tirino fuori un incidente di due anni fa dovuto a un semplice braccio robotico industriale Kuka e insinuino che ora sia dovuto a Optimus", ha scritto in un post su X. Prima di essere attaccato, l'ingegnere stava riprogrammando i software di altre due macchine, in quel momento disabilitate. Due colleghi hanno assistito alla scena inorriditi e terrorizzati e sono stati loro a premere il bottone d'emergenza per liberarlo dagli artigli del robot, secondo quanto hanno raccontato. Una tragedia evitata, hanno riferito i testimoni parlando di "una scia di sangue" lasciata sul pavimento della fabbrica. Stando invece ai documenti ufficiale della Tesla, l'impiegato ha riportato una ferita alla mano e non ha avuto bisogno di nessun giorno di malattia. Da allora pare non ci siano stati più incidenti del genere ma secondo l'avvocata Hannah Alexander, che rappresenta i lavoratori a contratto della fabbrica di Austin, ce ne sarebbero stati altri, tra i quali la morte sospetta per un colpo di calore dell'operaio Antelmo Ramirez sempre nel 2021. Al di là degli episodi che richiamano in modo inquietante la fantascienza, l'azienda di Elon Musk è stata spesso criticata per i suoi livelli di sicurezza sul lavoro e per la scarsa trasparenza nel riportare gli incidenti. Nello stabilimento in questione, ad esempio, i dati evidenziano un tasso di infortuni più elevato rispetto alla media del settore: un lavoratore su 26 rispetto a un lavoratore su 38 in altre importanti fabbriche automobilistiche statunitensi. Secondo un rapporto dell'Agenzia federale per la sicurezza e la salute sul lavoro (OSHA), presso la fabbrica di Austin quasi un lavoratore su 21 lo scorso anno ha subito infortuni sul lavoro, un tasso significativamente superiore alla media del settore di uno su 30. On 6th December 1214 King Alexander II aged 16 was crowned on the Stone of Destiny on Moot Hill at Scone Palace, Perthshire.

A direct follow on from Sunday’s post, William the Lion having died at Stirling, they didn’t hang about in arranging his son’s coronation, it makes me wonder if some of the dates are 100% accurate, Willam died, was buried at Arbroath and the 16 year old Alexander crowned within two days. 

Alexander II was born on 24th August, 1198 at Haddington, East Lothian, the only son of King William, he succeeded to the throne of Scotland on the death of his father and  went on to have quite an eventful reign.

The following year witnessed an uprising by the clans Meic Uilleim and MacHeth, inveterate enemies of the Scottish crown, but forces loyal to the king put down the insurrection. Alexander gave his support to his southern neighbour’s rebellious barons in the hope of re-acquiring Northumbria for the Scottish crown. This policy enraged the volatile King John, who sent an army north into Scotland to ‘hunt the red fox cub from his lair’. The English armies burnt Berwick and sacked the Scottish border castles.

Alexander eventually contracted a marriage with John’s daughter, Joan in June 1221, hoping that her brother, the new English King, Henry III, would grant him the province as her dowry, Henry, however would not comply and both sides nursed resentments of the other.

The following year saw the subjection of the semi-independent district of Argyll. Alexander’s forces crushed a revolt in Galloway in 1235, an invasion attempted soon afterwards by its exiled leaders similarly met with failure. Soon afterwards, a claim for homage from Henry III of England provoked a counter-claim from Alexander to the northern English counties.

The dispute between the two countries was settled by a compromise in 1237. At a council at York in 1237, when a temporary peace was negotiated, Alexander again brought up the subject of his claim to Northumbria, the Treaty of York defined the boundary between England and Scotland as running between the Solway Firth in the west and the mouth of the River Tweed in the east.

Joanna died childless in March, 1238 in Essex and on 15 May of the following year Alexander took as his second wife Marie, the daughter of Enguerrand de Coucy, this marriage succeeded in producing an heir to the Scottish throne on 4th September, 1241, named Alexander in honour of his father. Alexander also fathered an illegitimate daughter, Marjorie, who was married to Sir Alan Durward, the self styled Count of Atholl and Justiciar of Scotia, the couple had three children.

Henry III threatened an invasion of Scotland in 1243, but did not receive the support of the English barons and was compelled to make peace with the Scots the following year at Newcastle.

Alexander II embarked on an expedition to recover the Hebrides from the Norwegians and died of a fever on his galley by the Island of Kerrera, in the Bay of Oban in the Inner Hebrides on 1st July, 1249 and was buried at Melrose Abbey in Roxburghshire. He was succeeded by his son, Alexander III by Marie de Coucy.

Article: Ballet West promotes a Black ballerina and a Brazilian dancer to Principal, the first non-Asian dancers of color to ascend to the company's top level

Katlyn Addison and Hadriel Diniz will become principal artists for the 2021-2022 season.

Ballet West has promoted its first non-Asian dancers of color to the company’s top rung of performers.

Katlyn Addison and Hadriel Diniz, both first soloists with the Salt Lake City-based troupe, will become principal artists for the 2021-2022 season, starting in the fall, the company announced Thursday.

Addison grew up in Campton, Ontario, Canada, and trained with the National Ballet School of Canada. She joined Ballet West in 2011 and has moved up the ranks to demi-soloist in 2014, soloist in 2016, and first soloist in 2018. Among her roles have been The Siren in George Balanchine’s “Prodigal Son,” and the Sugar Plum Fairy in Willam Christensen’s “The Nutcracker.” In 2019, she took part in an exchange between Ballet West and The Scottish Ballet, performing the title character in the premiere of “The Snow Queen.”

Adam Sklute, Ballet West’s artistic director, said in a statement that Addison is “a remarkable artist. She has a depth and passion for her art that every artistic director craves in a dancer.”

Earlier this year, Addison told The Salt Lake Tribune that she wants to “keep the tradition and the aesthetic part of this beautiful, pure art form,” she said. “But it doesn’t have to be one skin pigment to create that aesthetic line or beauty that we’re envisioning in a classical ballerina.”

Diniz comes from Minas Gerais, Brazil, and started training in ballet at age 11. He joined Ballet West in 2015 and rose quickly: demi soloist in 2018, soloist in 2019 and first soloist in 2020. One highlight of his career was landing the title role in Balanchine’s “Prodigal Son.”

“In any role, Hadriel will delight the audience with his stage presence and bravura technique,” Sklute said. “He also is a consummate partner. His love for his art form is palpable and his kindness and generosity of spirit make him a joy to work with.”

They will join an established group of principal artists: Emily Adams, Adrian Fry, Chase O’Connell, Beckanne Sisk and Rex Tilton.

Katherine Lawrence and Arolyn Williams, who have been dancing with Ballet West since 2004, will retire from their positions as principal artists at the end of this season. Lawrence has been a principal artist since 2011; Williams since 2013.

Sklute said Lawrence and Williams “are incredibly gifted and shared their talents with our audience for 17 years. They will be missed and I wish them the very best for their future.”

Other Ballet West dancers who are retiring after this season include Alexander MacFarlan, a first soloist; Katie Critchlow and Emily Neale, soloists; Lindsay Bond, a demi-soloist; and Jordan Richardson and Lucas Horns, both corps artists.

Three former corps artists are returning to Ballet West next season: Amy Potter, promoted to soloist, and Kazlyn Nielsen and Anisa Sinteral, both back in the corps.

Five dancers from Ballet West II are being promoted to the corps: Jazz Khai Bynum, Isabella Martinez Corridon, Robert Fowler, Connor Hammond and Claire Wilson.
