Introducing the Galleries in Aldershot, Taken August 2017. These are images I have kept on my DSLR for a while and thought I'd share.
Visiting Aldershot was a hugely drastic example of Urban Decay in action. It's clear the high street was at a breaking point during this year as even the plethora of discount stores were empty husks of their formerly bustling selves.
PoundWorld and PoundLand were both empty. A single chair occupying the now barren PoundWorld store. We call these "Chilling Chairs''
Death was inevitable, when even the discount stores couldn't survive. What hope is there for Antiques and Jewellers?
When taking this photo I was approached by a very kind gentleman who spoke about the sorry state of the shopping centre. Bringing up memories of a better time when the shopping centre was lively and busy.
It was at this point the hunger set in, I really fancied a bite to eat. I was reminded of the existence of the food chain "Wimpy Burger" . It was actually fantastic. I was still on my vegetarian kick so settled on a mushroom burger.
I would recommend visiting Wimpy... before you can't. The food isn't bad at all.
The Galleries were only partially open. Gated off was the second and barren half of The Galleries. The Roof leaking with wet floor cones trailing off into the distance.
For being devoid of any purpose here, this section of the galleries is surprisingly tidy despite the problematic ceiling. It's clear the ones still in charge are clinging onto a hope that maybe one day this forgotten space can be restored to its former glory.
Externally of the Shopping Centre was a sorry sight. The parking area was marked with warning posters and carried the same smell found in the Swindon Bus Station Toilets.
Even for 2017, there bore some archaic remnants of a past technology. Rusted, grotty and definitely not something I was about to verify if it still worked.
There were smaller shopping areas outside, for being a weekday in the summer holidays it was scarily dead. This was pre-pandemic, I can't imagine the state of Aldershot now but I would like to return again someday soon.
The last picture I am sharing, doing a bit of walking around I came across this abandoned building. I would never trespass into an abandoned building to show you all the inside, but the outside was sad enough.
I regret not asking the locals more about this place as I am not sure what it was before it became abandoned.
Thanks for checking out my post on Aldershot! I'll have some more content from other places including the Swindon Tented Market!

“DESERTER, TRICKSTER, GOES TO JAIL - Man With A Kink Posed As Parson,” The People (London). March 1, 1942. Page 5. ---- TWENTY-YEARS-OLD William Albert Cork, a can- teen worker, whose home is at Cambridge-road. Aldershot, has a kink or obsession for posing as a clergyman.
He brags that while a deserter from the Army he drove to Sheffield, dressed as an Army chaplain with another deserter acting as batman and a third deserter as the driver.
They arrived during a blitz. changed their uniform for civilian clothes and went out looting. They lived on the proceeds.
Cork was eventually arrested for wearing uniform and badges of an Army chaplain, In his billet was found a sackful of soldiers' letters he had stolen, while in the Royal Artillery.
All this was said of him by a detective at Marlborough-st. yesterday when Cork was sentenced to three months' hard labour for breaking his recognisances entered into on December 26.
BILKED THE DEAN Mr. Claud Morgan. Probation Officer, explained that Cork was directed to live in Canterbury, but he threw up his job there, telling his landlady he had obtained an Army chaplaincy.
While at Canterbury. Cork rented a house from the Dean and Chap- ter, sub-let it, collected the rent and failed to pay the Dean.
"He is constantly giving the impression that is a clergyman," continued Mr. Morgan, "and when the Probation Officer at Canterbury went to his lodgings with his father they found a number of cassocks, surplices, stoles and other Church vestments.
"His last pose was as a lay clerk at Canterbury Cathedral."

UK riots: outbreak, evolution, interim results
The past six days have brought the biggest riots in the UK since the summer of 2011, when the Metropolitan Police shot and killed a Black man in North London.
For Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, and other Labour figures, the violence and its causes are largely linked to national-oriented racism and anti-immigration intolerance. However, some of the boroughs where the most intense riots took place have no immigration issues, UnHerd reports.
In Sunderland, police faced “serious and sustained levels of violence” during riots last weekend when buildings and cars were torched. In Tamworth, where a viral video showed rioters attacking a migrant hotel, 0.5% said they were Muslim, whereas 95.8% described their ethnic group as “white.” Around 1,000 protesters were involved in violent clashes, with police horses separating anti-immigration and anti-racist protesters in Blackpool.
These case studies show that there is no precise rule about which places are most likely to experience riots, whether ethnically homogeneous or diverse. Yet places where people feel neglected and completely abandoned by the South East – the centre of power and the only money-making region – are more susceptible to violent protest. Starmer stated on Tuesday:
Whatever the apparent motivation, this is not protest; it’s pure violence and we will not tolerate attacks on mosques or on Muslim communities.
Meanwhile, the West Midlands police chief and a Manchester major are urging people to avoid taking part in any disorder following the riots in recent days.
They made a video to make it clear that police have “no double standards” and respect Muslim migrants. A police officer began the address by saying “[As-]Salaam-Alaikum,” a traditional Arabic greeting.
Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster condemned the “disgraceful” scenes of disorder that had broken out across the country and declared that West Midlands Police would not tolerate it, according to BirminghamLive.
I want to make it clear that there is no place for division, hate or racism and it will not be tolerated in the West Midlands. My advice to everyone, is that I strongly urge you to avoid gathering at any events and that you allow the police to carry out their essential duties, on behalf of the public.

The Curious Case of William Chevis
The Curious Case of William Chevis
News of the Times Episode 326 | 1931
1931 Aldershot and Lieut Chevis, halfway through his favourite meal, Manchurian Partridge, very shortly afterwards is beset by excruciating pain and dies within a few hours by strychnine poisoning.
To add to the mystery, the family dog vanishes shortly afterwards and is then found dead.
On the day of his son’s funeral, Lieut Chevis’s ex Judge father, receives a cruel telegram from Dublin with the words: “Hooray Hooray Hooray”
Several days later, he receives a second telegram promising that the murderer will never be found – Hooray. This case captivated the public and the papers!
Who killed Lieut Chevis?
Was it his beautiful new wife?
Was it his beautiful new wife’s ex-husband who had only very recently suddenly reappeared?
Was it an enemy of Lieut Chevis or an enemy of his wife’s?
Or, our own personal theory – an enemy of his father’s, an ex-judicial judge in Lahore, India. We take a look at the background, the evidence, and the papers regarding the curious case of William Chevis in today’s episode of Murderous Mondays.
Hosted by Robin Coles.
