Story

I am Mahmoud Al-Masri, I'm 21 years old, living at the Gaza Strip, an academic student majoring in Graphic Design.

I am here to ask for your support to complete my university education outside my city of Gaza after the Israeli occupation destroyed universities and colleges in the Gaza Strip and destroyed education facilities, youth support institutions and training spaces that aim to provide training for all disciplines and then provide job opportunities for young people, most of which were destroyed.

We used to have a beautiful life, despite the siege on Gaza and the wars on it. We used to have a house and now we live in a tent "displaced", we used to have dreams and we pursued them and still do, we used to go to the sea which is the only breathing space for the people of the Gaza Strip, we used to live peacefully despite all the siege. We here in Gaza have brilliant and innovative minds that learn medicine, technology, professional specialties, agriculture, industry, trade and all specialties, we just need someone to support us, appreciate what we do and motivate us to keep going.

October 7, 2023 is a date that I will never forget, we were displaced about 8 times and lived through terror and destruction and are still living it, we saw death with our own eyes and survived death several times, our features changed, we became young people instead of worrying about our future, we became tired of securing water and food for our family and carrying water from a distant place to the tent is very tiring, our bodies are tired of the weights we carry daily and the diseases that spread and we don't know what's next.

I decided to pay back my knowledge and the information I gained from study, search, and workshops by share it on social media. I will answer on everyone's questions, and make webinars as my teachers do with us.

These ideas will help educational community to grows.

My goal in launching my campaign is to raise funds to complete my university studies outside my city, to cover the costs of travel, housing, food, the costs of the university I will attend, and I am currently looking for a distinguished university in the field of graphic design. I asked my friends who attended universities in Europe to suggest some universities, and among my goals after studying is to provide a safe and stable place to live with my family.

wip intro: into the unknown

Måns knows everything about corporate life, coming from a family full of corporate workers, getting to visit his mothers' workplaces and studying business as his major. But as his senior year is finally coming to an end, only waiting for him to start his little thesis and finish his internship, Måns can't help but wonder - is this life really for him?

Bored and exhausted, Måns looks for interesting opportunities on his breaks that could help him get out of the hamster wheel he has gotten himself into. And when he suddenly sees two people looking for a third to start a farm on the coast, he doesn't even think twice.

Into the Unknown follows Måns and his farm mates as they all slowly get used to their new routines and environment, slowly get to know each other, and maybe even find some new people to help them out.

Måns Berg (he/him, how his name is pronounced: [mons]): Måns is a business school dropout and is looking for a better future for himself, where he can also do good to others, too. He comes from a upper middle class family, and while most of his family members seem to support him in his choice, he still feels like he isn't really as close to them as he was. (We'll also see some of his family members and their friends in the story as well as visiting characters, by the way).

Sam Bishop (it/they): Agriculture grad who got tired of academics and decided to get back to his roots, only to start research again. While working on the new farm, it is also writing an unofficial research paper on how long it takes for new farmers to fully get used to the routine, just for fun.

Kelly Hawthorne (she/they): A bit mysterious person but definitelity one of the funniest. Has an extremely soft spot for wild animals and would die for a chance to pet a swan. Really looks like some actress but no one can remember who.

Patrick Stark (he/they): A skilled programmer in a new company that's working completely online. Tired of the busy streets of a city, Patrick decided to move to a little town on the coast and enjoy the nature.

Thomas Levitan (he/him): A town technician who slowly gets interested in the new farm, and soon finds himself fixing their little robots. He can't tell if he's excited about it or a bit surprised how quickly he got used to hanging out there.

Writers like to play with Alder being old-fashioned, usually with regards to courting (even though the point of the witches' Pagan background is to reject that mindset and embrace queer shamelessness, but whatever), but one aspect I have yet to see anyone acknowledge is the older attitude towards war. Abigail's beliefs about glory did not come from nowhere, she absorbed them from the role models around her, from those highest up trickling down. She walked into Alder's office in the pilot, thinking based on her past experiences with Alder that her description of Raelle would garner Alder's sympathy. Alder herself speaks of glory many times during the show, including in contexts that make it clear that it is genuinely her personal belief, not just public propaganda for morale's sake. Her rebuke to Abigail was not that Raelle could offer other things besides being a soldier, but that everyone could rise to military excellence. In her opening speech in 1x1, she says that her deal with the Massachusetts Bay Militia was that "we will win your wars". Not defend, win. An emphasis on offense, on beating the opponent. Not a maintenance of peace, but a support of active conquest. Alder may have helped the creation of the Cession, but all of that land had to be taken by the US in the first place in order for them to be able to cede it. I will grant that there are more modern phrases in both 1x1 and her speech through Wade in 1x9. "to protect and defend" "to serve and defend" "cooperation, protect, restore peace" And yet, what are those sentiments surrounded by? "wipe the Spree from the face of the earth for good" "There is no middle ground. There is only one side now." "eliminate a threat with decisive finality". And, uh, while it may be tasteless to make comparisons to recent events in our world, this literally happens right after Alder had her soldiers do the opposite of rescue hostages in favor of killing the enemy, and then lied to everyone about who were the perpetrators. This isn't Alder bashing. What I'm saying is that I want to see a portrayal of Alder in fanfic that stays true to this characterization, that she comes from an era where the horrors of war only added to the glory one gained from them, where military commanders led from the front and relished the opportunity to triumph over their opponent. Where performance on the field was the standard by which they measured their respect for others. It's okay that Xena got to have excited smiles of anticipation about her fights. Alder focused the Accords on a specific purpose, rather than allowing for any other application of their powers (e.g. manufacturing, construction, agriculture, medical), because she herself much more prefers the scourge to the plow. There is zero indication in any second of canon, especially in season 1, that Alder was tired of the fight. At most she was annoyed that others kept trying to hold her back. To her, being a soldier is empowering.

Holland is worried that Holly hates him. He thinks he genuinely might be a bad father. He couldn’t fault his daughter if she blames him for the death of her mom, he certainly does.

27. Their guilty pleasure.

It would be easy to say alcohol, smoking, or self-flagellation, but really? Holland likes all those cheesy family activities (this includes Jackson of course). He didn’t get to spend enough time with Holly and her mom together, so he tries to put in the extra effort these days for family game nights, dinners, movie trips, anything they can do together. He also gets the bonus satisfaction of seeing Healy’s face flush every time he’s included as part of the March family.

Julian

15. Worst thing they’ve ever done.

Julian has done plenty of terrible things in his life. He is a product of his upbringing. As gently as I can put this with the understanding that he was victimized, the worst thing he did was not love himself enough to save himself by cutting ties with his mother and his brother. Without them in the picture, he very likely would not have been engaging in the destructive (both to himself and to other people) behaviors to the extent that he was. Crystal truly was an epicenter of bad.

I feel like Julian would find common ground with Driver. Neither of them had a stable childhood, however Driver was able to come out of his experiences being able to connect with others, to love, despite everything. Julian might be able to let him in. Perhaps he could heal.

2. A canon or headcanon hill I will die on.

I firmly believe that Deckard would have left that upgrade center with two kids, Ana and K, if he had truly known what was going on from the start. By all rights, they were siblings. K had found his family. He just would not -could not- consider himself human enough to deserve it. By the time Deckard realized, likely when Ana explained the circumstances of K visiting, it would have been too late for him to claim K in life. In a happier story, he would have pried K off those steps before he succumbed to his wounds and the thought that he wanted to die. Maybe he could have been saved. Deckard had loved a replicant as a partner, he could have easily loved a replicant as a son.

47. Their dream job.

I think that in another life, K would have really liked to do something involving agriculture. As we see in both the script and in the movie, he has a genuine interest in Sapper’s occupation. He wants to know what he farms. He wants to know what’s bubbling on the stove. He’s intrigued by the cowslip he finds on the ground. Anything involving the creation of life and the tactile use of his hands seems right up his alley. Personally, I specifically see him as keeping bees if he were not… leashed by the LAPD (if he were to survive defection or were allowed to openly have his own interests). They captivated him from the moment on landed on his hand. As he is, they’re part of a system working for the betterment of a colony. I also think that in keeping bees, he would feel closer to Deckard given that he has his own. It might feel almost as if it were a family business, and we all know how desperately K wants to belong to a family. I’ve included some of my notes on the script and some shots of K finding the hives. I have too many feelings. :(

The first week is closed on the new regime, and the regime’s string of harmful executive orders paint a picture of what him and his followers will attempt over the next four years. Cruelty to people working in the country, contributing to its social and economic fabric. Forcible erasure of people whose gender identity do not match what they characterize as “normal”. Leniancy shown towards right-wing political extremists. Withdrawal from international bodies that coordinate global health and environmental efforts. And, of course, the predictable prostration of the state to the interest of a few multi-billion dollar companies and the billionaires that profit.

While it’s worth taking a breath, as a great many of these executive orders will be blocked before taking effect or take a long time to have impact, the message is clear.

This is not a regime for everyone. It may not even be a regime for anyone outside of a few sycophantic oligarchs.

Let us focus for a moment on the threats to environmental stewardship and climate action. The regime’s executive order to withdraw from the Paris Agreement under the guise of economic competition with China is a dangerous step. It makes clear again to the world that when the rich control the state, whether it’s in the US or China, the interests of capitalism, consumption, and competition override the environment, climate action, our natural world, and global justice.

Why global justice? Because climate change is not just a global issue, but it harms the haves far less than the have-nots.

When I was a graduate student, I had the opportunity to visit Piura, an agricultural town in Peru that was experiencing extreme climate shifts due to climate change. The impact was not just environmental, but social and cultural, as the community was increasingly living on a constant emergency footing under the threat of floods, particularly during El Nino years.

It’s hard to thrive when you live like this. To describe it as simply “tragic” would obscure the fact that this is not a mere natural happening, but a human created injustice. Even if our leaders continue to say (if not in word, then in deed) that farmers in Piura are “not our problem,” we are all connected through our planet. It will return to us. And the ones who will suffer the most will be our poorest and our most vulnerable.

This is why this summer I ride for Earthjustice. Earthjustice is a non-profit legal organization that has gone toe-to-toe with the previous Trump regime over their violations of environmental protections and stewardship. Litigation remains one of more effective angles of challenging the legality of the regime’s attempts to exploit the environment for economic gain with little oversight.

They will have their work cut out for them over the next four years. By riding from Houghton to Chicago and back, I hope to bring attention to their work, and that you will consider contributing to them through the project’s GoFundMe page for Earthjustice.

Who/what do they do

Persephone (aka Kore, Cora, Proserpina, etc.) is the Olympian Goddess of the spring, love, ghosts, fertility, reincarnation, growth, the underworld, and more. She is also the wife of Hades, the God of the underworld.

2. Myth(s)

Myth #1

A famous myth of Persephone is her fight with Aphrodite (goddess of pleasure, fertility, beauty, and more) over the beautiful mortal Adonis (a young hunter who later became the God of fertility, vegetation, desire, beauty, and more.). While searching for prey, Adonis’ beauty was noticed by the Goddess Aphrodite, who was playing with Eros (aka Cupid. The God of carnal love.). Eros was sharpening his arrows when Aphrodite praised the beauty of Adonis, which made Eros jealous. To confront him, Aphrodite hugged Eros and told him he would always be the most beautiful to her. The arrows that Eros sharpened pierced Aphrodite, who fell in love with Adonis at first sight. On a spring day, Persephone wandered into the woods to find the now couple, Aphrodite and Adonis, cuddled up. Little did she know, Eros was pulling another prank of his and shot the spring goddess with one of his arrows, making her fall in love with Adonis. Going on another one of his hunts, Adonis was stopped by Aphrodite. She feared that his dangerous lifestyle would cause him to get hurt or, even worse, his death. Ares (God of war, the spirit of battle, courage, and more) was a previous lover of Aphrodite and was jealous of her new fascination with Adonis. On his hunt, Adonis stumbled upon a wild bore filled with bloodlust. Filled with the need to kill, Adonis injured the bore, but the bore, who was Ares, ended up killing Adonis. Aphrodite rushed to Adonis to find him dead and used his blood to create red flowers called Adonis before burying him. As Aphrodite wept at the loss, Persephone rejoiced at the opportunity to be with Adonis in the underworld. Once in the underworld, Persephone pursued Adonis and developed a relationship. Not able to stand being apart from her love anymore, Aphrodite went to the underworld to bring Adonis back to the land of the living. Hades (God of the underworld, riches, and more) did not appreciate the love Goddess stomping into his domain and demanding to bring a soul from the underworld back to life. She left with the promise that she would take away love from all couples. Zeus (the God of the sky and chief Greek deity) and Hera’s (Goddess of marriage, women, and family.) marriage was growing unbearable due to the lack of love in it. Zeus met with Persephone and Aphrodite to discuss what needs to happen next. Just like Zeus did with Demeter (Goddess of harvest, agriculture, food, and the fertility of the earth. Mother to Persephone), He suggested that Adonis spends ⅓ of the year in the underworld, ⅓ on the surface with Aphrodite and ⅓ to with whatever he pleased with. During spring, Adonis is with Aphrodite; in the summer, when she leaves, Persephone is on the surface to help her mother, Demeter, with the harvest. In the summer, Persephone can be with Adonis in the waking land. The myth of Adonis explains why sometimes winter stays longer; it is Persephone trying to keep with Adonis more, and why summer tends to linger for longer; Aphrodite is trying to have more time with Adonis.

Myth #2

Another myth of Persephone is less about the loving and affectionate side of Persephone but a more wrathful one. One of the many versions of the fatal tale of the Naiad nymph called Minthe. Minthe is the daughter of the river god Cocytus (which is also the name of one out of five rivers in the underworld) who resided in the underworld. Minthe is a gorgeous nymph who was with Hades before he abducted Persephone to bring him into the underworld to be his wife. Feeling replaced by Hades, Minthe claimed that she was more beautiful than Persephone and that Hades would soon grow tired of her and return to her when he did. When Minthe's opinion reached Persephone's ears, she transformed Minthe in the garden mint. This explains why mint is considered to be a sacred plant of Hades.

3. Influence on today's society

While Persephone's significance in the modern world may not be as apparent as it once was, it still holds great importance. Her existence serves as a symbol of the intricate cycle of life and death. Initially, she embodies the essence of a spring Goddess, bringing life and happiness as she causes flowers to bloom. The nicest thing anyone ever says about my style - by which I mean, the thing people they say that makes me think, yes, that’s exactly what I want to be doing - is that it uses a small number of words to create an outsize effect. I said yesterday that A. always describes it as “laconic”, which I initially didn’t like but have come round to, and another friend describes it as a Japanese painting, with a few illuminating strokes on a broad canvas. That’s the aim, but on a day-to-day basis my intention is clean, precise, warm, and without unnecessary ornament. I remove dead metaphors (i.e., metaphors that already exist in the language, “cold as ice”, “black as pitch”) and any word that doesn’t mean precisely the thing I want. Although I’m also a big fan of the broad penumbra of the living metaphor. See this sentence fragment: A sparkling day in Boston, winter’s steam and smoke.

Do days sparkle? Maybe. I think the word creates a bright blue sky and ice on the ground, but it depends on the reader’s association, and maybe they see unseasonably warm. And, winter’s steam and smoke - either a living metaphor, the idea of confusion, everything obscured, but also, the steam of your breath and of the smokestacks, and the smoke of wood burners.

I actually don’t think Mensah is that underrated now, but she was for a long time and mostly gets written about in relation to Murderbot, so here we go. She is the principal human character in the Murderbot books though oddly doesn’t appear as much as you'd think. (Murderbot! long series of novellas and novels about a sentient killing machine who is, very much against its will, becoming a person with real friendships and relationships. All Murderbot itself wants to do is sit around and watch its shows. It’s rough being Murderbot.)

Anyway. Mensah is the very first human ever to treat Murderbot with the respect due to a real person. She never stops doing so. Murderbot adores her and would do anything for her. She is, just by the bye, a planetary administrator - that is to say, she’s the political leader of an entire planet’s worth of people, and I love that all by itself? You still don’t get many women who wield unremarkable power in SFF - by which I mean, she’s not a fairy queen, she’s a duly elected leader who worries about things like security and agriculture. But she’s also just a normal (queer) person, trying to get through this world, with the help of her large and overwhelming family. I do this with my students as well! I am an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher at a private academy, meaning most of the time there is no consistent age range between my students. I've had groups made up entirely of teenagers, or a mix of teenagers and young adults, and this year I taught my first Level 1 group (I usually take over the advanced levels but there wasn't anyone available at the time so they gave it to me.)

There were 3 people in the group: a middle aged lady who wanted to speedrun the course because she might be moving to the US with her son, and 23 yo radio host, and a 17 yo highschool graduate. Technically, all adults as far as education goes.

When they started the course, the 17 yo - let's call her Dory - barely participated at all. Sarah, the mom doing the speedrun, was the most talkative, not because she was better or knew more english, but because she didn't care if she made mistakes or not. Sam, the radio host, sat squarely in the middle. Thankfully, they got on great amongst themselves and with me from the start, so that was a big plus.

What finally got Dory out of her shell was, surprisingly, the chance to point out the mistakes the others were making. Not in a malicious way, mind you. It's a common technique when teaching languages. You'll introduce sentences or a text and you'll ask the students to point out grammar mistakes and correct them. Dory got really good at these exercises, and she started doing it with her classmates. And it was great! She was opening up! Being more confident! And Sarah and Sam actually felt better when Dory corrected them than when I did! It created this feedback loop that gave them all a lot of support and help, particularly out of the classroom when they needed to practice on their own.

Encouraging that each of them try and help the others in ways that came easier/more natural to them did wonders for the entire group. Sarah, being the most talkative, would actually mock argue with me for laughs, giving the others a chance to join into the conversation. Sam knew a bunch of idioms that she would try and include in her writing exercises, and through that the others learned them as well. And when someone made a mistake, the entire group took it as an opportunity to learn.

One of the simplest tricks I have that has turned out to be extremely effective is using interactive online worksheets. The students can fill them in on the computer and once they are done they can click a button and the worksheet will grade itself, showing the score as a big red number on top and every correct answer will be highlighted in green. Let me tell you, the joy felt when my students see that huge red 10/10 at the top of the sheet is exactly the same no matter the age. And it's even greater when they complete worksheets as a group, everyone pitching in to get the answers right. Every little bit of positive feedback works actual wonders with even the most tired, stressed or confused students.

Another thing I try to do is shape my classes around the students' interests. This is harder to do with larger groups, but even then some common ground can be found. Games are great for this. Nothing gets a room full of bored teenagers going like a game of Uno Jenga, it'd have them yelling, taunting each other, and joking IN ENGLISH in absolutely no time. And when you join them and show them that you like the things they like and that you encourage their interests, the difference is tangible. The students are much more open, abandon the fear of making mistakes, and actually inject passion into the learning process.

Recently I had a student that, when asked what he was planning to do his final presentation about, told me he came from a family of ranchers and wanted to talk about the relationship between the agricultural industry in our country and the several species of large cats that inhabit those same areas. I told him that this was a subject I knew absolutely nothing about, and that I was very excited to watch his presentation and learn something new! The way his face lit up, man, it was incredible.

This 13 yo boy came to class on the last day carrying BOOKS on the subject, a REAL JAGUAR SKULL, and an ABSOLUTE BANGER of a presentation. Everyone was blown away.
