Percy Jackson's foundation is problematic
Ok, so, the OG PJO series is amazing for a lot of people. I mean, it's almost as famous as Harry Potter for a reason. It has an immersive world which is escapism which is really nice for a lot of people including me..........
But the series could definitely have been rewritten to be better. Such as not making Annabeth hit Percy so often (only playful hits, no so hard) making Ares love his children, making Artemis NOT SO PREDATORY-
But the thing is, even if the series was rewritten to exclude these.........
The very foundation of the Percy Jackson series is problematic.
The foundation of the Percy Jackson series is about overthrowing an abusive system and making the abusers pay attention and listen, and I'm not saying that that's a bad concept. It's actually one of the best concepts, but-
But it's what Rick Riordan used as an abusive system that's really wrong.
He used the Greek gods as abusive parents when in the myths they were the furthest things from it.
Excuse me. Zeus was not an abusive father to Apollo. He genuinely loved him. He only punished him when Apollo needed to be punished and deserved it. Zeus was a loving father to Artemis as well. He gave her what she requested and let her live in the wild as she pleased. Zeus also stopped Athena from practicing divination at Apollo's request. Zeus would not leave two children with an abusive alcholic mother.
Poseidon was not abusive and neglectful. In the myths, he punished Odysseus for blinding his son Polyphemus. And he let Sciron do as he pleased in the ocean, though Sciron was a terrible person.
Aphrodite frequently came to her son Aeneas' aid on the battlefield of Troy. She loved him very much and even told him to give up LOVE to fulfil his own destiny of becoming a king.
And it also depicts Athena and Hades as having demigod children, when in the myths, Athena has no children at all and Hades is faithful to his wife Persephone, only cheating on her with TWO people in only a few variations of the myths, while other myths have Hades loving Leuce and Minthe before Persephone.
It's problematic for Athena to have demigod children, even brain children, because she was a virgin goddess who had no children in the myths. Ancient Greece associated marriage and having children with losing your virginity.
It was symbolic, so Athena having children, even brain children, makes her lose her virginity.
And about Hades being faithful-he's stated to have had multiple children with women when Persephone goes to her mother, which is why she's so unhappy.
This is incorrect and terribly wrong.
But if Athena and Hades didn't have children, and if the Greek Gods weren't abusive parents, then this series wouldn't exist. These problematic themes are essential to the story, which is why PJO is so problematic itself.
Not to mention the whole 'flame of the West' crap that is a big collective forehead smacking moment.
So even if Percy Jackson could be rewritten, it'll always be problematic in one way or another.
(Not saying that you shouldn't enjoy it. I have a love-hate relationship with it).

I really like your Eris design. Do you have any other designs your working on? Like Hedone or Thanatos Would love to see them!
I have! I've been working on quite a few. Apologies if any anatomy is off. these are all just concepts and sketches. They still need some tlc 😅.

Hermes ft. Minthe
In character design hell again :')
His wing ears can fold into little hair things when he's not using them!
Hermes and Minthe are so iconic and funny bro clown on clown violence!! I can't wait for you to meet them :') They are always arguing about who is shorter (It's Minthe by just a millimeter, but Hermes wears shoes so it looks like he's an inch taller)
Hermes: I used to think I was the shortest in the pantheon...
And then I met Minthe.
Minthe: Angry cat noises SHUT UP!!

"Everything will be okay"
Minthe, forgiving the Goddess that turned her into a mint, comes to love the Goddess, as the Goddess loves her.
(Minthe (return) design/color pallet as well as Persephone (fixed/set underworld) colors)

Pretending that Hades and Persephone never cheated on each other and erasing Adonis and Minthe is something, but portraying Adonis and Minthe in a negative light and turning them into some generic villains in order to show how pure and superior Hades and Persephone's marriage is makes me go buy a gun.
I can somehow understand that when it comes to Minthe, since we have this fragment where she's turned into the mint plant after boasting about how she's more beautiful than Persephone, and how Hades will soon get rid of her:
„Mintha, men say, was once a maid beneath the earth, a Nymphe of Kokytos, and she lay in the bed of Aidoneus; but when he raped the maid Persephone from the Aitnaian hill, then she complained loudly with overweening words and raved foolishly for jealousy, and Demeter in anger trampled upon her with her feet and destroyed her. For she had said that she was nobler of form and more excellent in beauty than dark-eyed Persephone and she boasted that Aidoneus would return to her and banish the other from his halls …” (Oppian, Halieutica)
However, I will still criticize 99,99% of the fanfictions and retellings where she appears, especially because in many of them a) Demeter is a toxic mother who asked Minthe to sleep with Hades in the hope that in this way her daughter will divorce him, despite the fact that in some versions she was literally the one who punished Minthe in order to protect her daughter's dignity and status as the Queen of the Underworld and b) she's usually the only one who's blamed for sleeping with a married man and Hades is still viewed as this innocent little being, as if it doesn’t take two to tango.
But demonizing Adonis? The guy who was groomed by almost every deity who found him handsome, including Persephone aka the one who raised him and was supposed to be only a mother figure to him? The character who's perceived as an object of desire rather than an actual human being and yet so many people fail to see the abusive undertones behind his relationships and still make Adonis x Aphrodite content? I've even seen fanfictions where the authors kept the part where he was raised by Persephone, but twist the sexual nature of their relationship and write Adonis as a jerk who finds himself worthy of sleeping with a goddess like Persephone, and Persephone as this loyal wife who would never cheat on her husband. Are you guys really willing to go that far to the point of giving Adonis an Oedipus Complex?!
Yes, this myth is already very disturbing, yet there's no need to ignore Adonis' abuse by pretending that he enjoyed it, or that he was the abuser all this time.
