The Sad Truth About Disability: Insights from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
In a recent episode of *Last Week Tonight*, host John Oliver tackled the complex and often heartbreaking realities surrounding disability in modern society. With his signature blend of humor and pointed critique, Oliver shed light on the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, exposing systemic issues that are often overlooked. This blog aims to explore the key topics discussed in the episode and reflect on the broader implications of disability in our world today.
The Marginalization of Disabled Individuals
One of the central themes of Oliver's episode was the societal marginalization of people with disabilities. While the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was a significant step forward in ensuring equal rights and access, many barriers still exist. Oliver highlighted how, despite legal protections, individuals with disabilities often face discrimination in various aspects of life, including employment, healthcare, and public spaces.
The episode emphasized that the representation of disabled individuals in media and culture is often lacking or misrepresented. Stereotypes and misconceptions can perpetuate stigma, making it difficult for those with disabilities to gain acceptance and understanding from society. By addressing these issues, Oliver called for a reevaluation of how disability is perceived and discussed in our cultural narrative.
The Inaccessibility of Public Spaces
Oliver pointed out the persistent inaccessibility of public spaces, despite regulations meant to enforce compliance with the ADA. Many buildings, transportation systems, and public facilities remain ill-equipped to accommodate individuals with disabilities. The host humorously but seriously illustrated how seemingly small oversights can accumulate, leading to significant obstacles for those who rely on accessibility features.
The episode showcased real-life examples of individuals who encounter barriers daily, such as inaccessible restrooms, public transportation that is not wheelchair-friendly, and the lack of proper accommodations in workplaces. These issues serve as a reminder that while laws exist, enforcement and practical application often fall short, leading to further marginalization of disabled individuals.
The Burden of Healthcare Inequities
Another crucial topic Oliver addressed was the inequities in healthcare faced by people with disabilities. The episode tackled the often frustrating and complicated relationship individuals with disabilities have with healthcare systems. Many disabled persons encounter difficulties accessing necessary medical care, receiving proper diagnoses, or obtaining adequate support services.
Oliver highlighted the stark reality that healthcare systems frequently prioritize cost over patient needs, which can lead to inadequate care for those with disabilities. This inequity is exacerbated by systemic issues such as lack of insurance coverage or high out-of-pocket costs for necessary treatments. The episode underscored the urgent need for reform in the healthcare system to ensure that individuals with disabilities receive the quality care they deserve.
The Financial Struggles of Disabled Individuals
Moreover, the episode delved into the financial struggles faced by many with disabilities. Oliver revealed how societal barriers and systemic discrimination can limit employment opportunities for disabled individuals. The fear of losing critical benefits often discourages individuals from seeking work, creating a cycle of poverty and dependence.
The episode pointed out that many disabled individuals live below the poverty line, with limited access to resources that could improve their quality of life. Oliver's discussion highlighted the need for comprehensive support systems that empower individuals with disabilities to achieve financial independence and stability.
The Importance of Representation and Advocacy
Throughout the episode, Oliver emphasized the importance of representation and advocacy for individuals with disabilities. He called for a more inclusive approach to policymaking and a push for representation in media to ensure that the voices of disabled individuals are heard and valued.
By uplifting disabled voices and experiences, society can foster greater understanding and empathy. Oliver urged viewers to engage in activism, advocating for policy changes that promote accessibility, equity in healthcare, and the dismantling of societal barriers that hinder disabled individuals from living fulfilling lives.
Conclusion: A Call to Action
John Oliver's recent episode on disability serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in society. By addressing the marginalization, inaccessibility, healthcare inequities, and financial struggles, the episode shone a light on the sad truth about disability—one that is often overlooked in public discourse.
As advocates for change, it is crucial that we continue to engage in conversations about disability, challenge societal norms, and push for inclusive policies that uplift and support disabled individuals. By doing so, we can work towards a more equitable society where everyone, regardless of their abilities, has the opportunity to thrive and be valued.
In the words of John Oliver, it is time to break down the barriers and ensure that the voices of those with disabilities are not just heard but amplified. Only then can we begin to address the systemic issues that have long persisted and work towards a brighter future for all.
I hope this blog provides a thoughtful overview of the important topics John Oliver touched on regarding disability and encourages further reflection and action on these crucial issues!

👰♀️Say NO to Child Marriages in America! Implement Standardized Marriage Age Laws
AN OPEN LETTER to THE PRESIDENT & U.S. CONGRESS; STATE GOVERNORS & LEGISLATURES
2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding the discrepancies and alarming loopholes in marriage age laws across the states and to advocate for action towards implementing a standardized marriage age of 18 nationwide, with strict provisions that prohibit underage marriage below 16 and set an age of consent not below 16. Additionally, I recommend setting a consent age gap provision that is no more permissive than at least 14 years old and up to five years older, further ensuring the safety and well-being of our youth.
It is alarming to note that four states—California, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Oklahoma—currently have no official minimum age for marriage but require parental consent or court approval. This inconsistency in laws creates dangerous loopholes that could be exploited by individuals seeking to harm or exploit minors. Allowing underage marriage below the age of 16 poses serious risks, including increased vulnerability to exploitation and abuse.
I urge you to take immediate steps towards implementing a consistent and protective legal framework by advocating for standardized marriage age laws across the nation.
Thank you for considering this urgent matter. I strongly believe that uniform marriage age laws are essential to safeguarding the rights and safety of young individuals and preventing potential harm.
Together, we can say NO to child marriage and child exploitation!

Unleashing the Power of Your Voice: Standing up for Yourself and Others
Shaina Tranquilino
October 21, 2023
Throughout history, individuals who have used their voices to stand up for themselves and others have played a pivotal role in shaping societies. From civil rights activists like Martin Luther King Jr. to Malala Yousafzai advocating for girls' education, these courageous individuals remind us of the immense power that lies within our own voices. Speaking up is not always easy; it requires courage, resilience, and determination. However, in this blog post, we will explore why using your own voice to stand up for yourself and others is crucial and how it can create positive change.
Advocating for Yourself:
Speaking up for oneself is an empowering act that allows individuals to assert their needs, boundaries, and beliefs confidently. When you use your voice to advocate for yourself, you establish healthy relationships built on mutual respect and understanding. Moreover, expressing your thoughts and opinions openly fosters personal growth by challenging self-doubt and building confidence.
Empowering Others:
Using your voice to speak up on behalf of others who may be marginalized or oppressed is an act of solidarity that holds immeasurable value. By amplifying unheard voices, we help create a more inclusive society where every individual's experiences are acknowledged and respected. A powerful example is the #MeToo movement, which empowered survivors of sexual assault to break their silence while shedding light on the pervasiveness of such issues.
Catalyst for Change:
History has proven time and again that when people unite behind a common cause with a collective voice, they become unstoppable forces for change. It was the resolute voices of suffragettes that won women the right to vote in many countries worldwide. Similarly, civil rights leaders fought against racial segregation through peaceful protests and speeches that ultimately led to significant legal reforms.
Inspiring Others:
When you find the courage to speak up and share your experiences, you inspire others to do the same. Your voice can become a catalyst for change in someone else's life, encouraging them to confront their own challenges and advocate for themselves or stand up against injustice. By using your voice authentically and fearlessly, you create a ripple effect that spreads empowerment throughout your community.
Overcoming Challenges:
Speaking up is not always easy; it often comes with risks and hurdles. However, by embracing discomfort, we grow stronger and more resilient. When faced with adversity or opposition, remember that every great movement encountered resistance before achieving success. Use these challenges as opportunities to refine your message, learn from differing perspectives, and build bridges of understanding.
The power of using your own voice cannot be understated. Whether standing up for yourself or advocating for others, speaking out has the potential to transform lives and shape societies. It may feel daunting at times, but remember that even small acts of courage can have profound impacts in creating positive change. So let us embrace our voices, unleashing their power to uplift ourselves and those around us. Together, we can make a difference by speaking up, even when it is hard to do so.

The Case for Same-Sex Figure Skating: Why It’s Time to Rewrite the Rules of the Ice
Gabriella Papadakis has written an essay on ice dancing with Madison Hubbell, and the issues caused by heteronormativity in figure skating. Please give it a read!
Figure skating has the potential to be so much more. Imagine a sport where skaters are free to lead, follow, or simply express themselves—where the artistry isn’t confined by outdated stereotypes. What if the next generation of skaters saw same-sex partnerships as normal? What if breaking these traditions inspired innovation in mixed pairs? What if we stopped teaching women to shrink and men to suppress their artistry? Thinking about all the talents that we’re losing and those we’d gain back: shorter men who love to dance, tall & muscular girls whose strength could be celebrated rather than concealed. Skaters who don’t see themselves in the expected gendered expressions but still have things to say. We dance on frozen water and skate on a surface that contains the fluidity of life itself. I’m wondering about all the art that could emerge from this beautiful sport. All the artistic & athletic diversity. I believe these changes would elevate the sport—not diminish it. They would create more room for individuality, artistry, and excellence.
#gabriella papadakis#madison hubbell#figure skating#ice dance#still digesting this but i love love love what she's doing to advocate for change#god knows fs needs it#cannot wait to see her skating with madi at AOI#it also makes my blood boil to read about all the misogyny she's experienced...#like none of it is surprising but to hear it from the perspective of a high level skater...

Something that's important to realize is that men do not view their hatred of women as political or as a personal viewpoint. When men say things like women are less than men or stupid or not good for anything or that they belong in the kitchen, they view it as a natural fact of the world. They're fine saying vile shit about women because they firmly believe those things to be basic truth. They view it as natural order. To them it's as true as the sky being blue. They don't consider their views to be subjective. They think everyone feels how they do and the ones who don't are too stupid to recognize very simple truth. If you've ever wondered why a man would feel comfortable freely saying something offensive about women, that's why. To them, women being less complex than men is as simple as saying that humans need food to eat.
#This is also why misogyny does not lessen with political sides#It just changes form#The conservative man views women as lesser than men#He wants them in the kitchen#The liberal man views women as lesser than men#He wants them to be comfortable in brothels#Hating women is men's baseline and then they base their politics based off of that#So the conservative man who hates women will ban abortion and contraceptives#And the liberal man who hates women will ban single sex spaces and advocate for women to lose their jobs if they have wrong opinions#Female hatred is the same but how men utilize it varies

Understanding the Aftermath of Narcissistic Abuse: Signs and Effects
Narcissistic abuse is a form of emotional and psychological manipulation that can leave deep and lasting scars on its victims. Individuals who have suffered from this type of abuse often experience a range of emotional and psychological effects that can be difficult to navigate. In this blog post, we will explore the signs and symptoms of someone who has experienced narcissistic abuse, the impact on their mental health, and the journey towards healing.
What is Narcissistic Abuse?
Narcissistic abuse occurs in relationships where one partner exhibits narcissistic traits or behaviors. A narcissist often displays a lack of empathy, an inflated sense of self-importance, and a constant need for admiration. They can be charming and charismatic in public, but behind closed doors, they may engage in manipulative tactics to exert control over their partner.
The abuse can manifest in various forms, including gaslighting, emotional blackmail, verbal abuse, and isolation. Victims may feel confused, anxious, and trapped, as narcissistic abusers often create an environment where the victim's perception of reality is distorted.
Signs of Suffering from Narcissistic Abuse
1. **Low Self-Esteem**: Victims of narcissistic abuse often suffer from severely diminished self-esteem. They may feel worthless, inadequate, and unlovable, constantly questioning their value in the relationship.
2. **Confusion and Self-Doubt**: Gaslighting is a common tactic used by narcissists to make their victims doubt their perceptions and memories. As a result, victims may feel chronically confused, second-guessing themselves and struggling to trust their instincts.
3. **Emotional Instability**: The emotional rollercoaster that accompanies a relationship with a narcissist can lead to significant mood swings. Victims may experience feelings of sadness, anger, anxiety, and hopelessness, often fluctuating between these emotions without clear reason.
4. **Isolation**: Narcissistic abusers often isolate their victims from friends and family to maintain control. After the abuse, victims may find themselves feeling lonely and disconnected, struggling to re-establish social connections.
5. **Hypervigilance**: Those who have experienced narcissistic abuse may become hyper-aware of their surroundings and the feelings of others, constantly on guard to avoid triggering the narcissist’s anger or displeasure.
6. **Avoidance of Conflict**: Having been conditioned to avoid confrontation with the narcissist, victims may find themselves unable to express their own feelings or needs, leading to a pattern of people-pleasing behavior.
7. **Difficulty Making Decisions**: Victims may struggle with decision-making due to the relentless criticism and control imposed by the narcissistic partner. This can lead to feelings of paralysis and insecurity.
8. **Physical Symptoms**: The psychological toll of narcissistic abuse can manifest physically. Victims may experience symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, headaches, or gastrointestinal issues, often linked to chronic stress.
9. **PTSD Symptoms**: Some victims may develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, including flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety. They may relive the abuse and struggle with intrusive thoughts.
10. **Lack of Trust**: After a relationship with a narcissist, victims may find it challenging to trust others. This mistrust can extend beyond romantic relationships and affect friendships and family connections.
The Journey to Healing
Recovering from narcissistic abuse is a multifaceted process that requires time, support, and self-compassion. Here are some key steps individuals can take on their healing journey:
1. **Acknowledge the Abuse**: The first step in healing is recognizing and validating the experience. Understanding that narcissistic abuse is real and harmful is crucial for recovery.
2. **Seek Professional Help**: Therapy can be instrumental for victims of narcissistic abuse. A mental health professional can help individuals process their experiences, develop coping strategies, and rebuild self-esteem.
3. **Establish Boundaries**: Learning to set and enforce boundaries is essential for regaining control over one’s life. This step can help individuals protect themselves from further emotional harm.
4. **Reconnect with Support Systems**: Reaching out to trusted friends and family members can provide emotional support and facilitate healing. Building a solid support network is vital for recovery.
5. **Practice Self-Care**: Engaging in self-care activities—such as exercise, healthy eating, journaling, and mindfulness practices—can help individuals reconnect with their bodies and emotions, promoting overall well-being.
6. **Educate Yourself**: Learning about narcissism and the dynamics of narcissistic abuse can empower victims. Understanding the tactics used by narcissists can help individuals recognize patterns and avoid future abusive relationships.
7. **Cultivate Self-Compassion**: Victims often experience feelings of shame and guilt. Practicing self-compassion and reframing negative self-talk can aid in rebuilding self-worth.
8. **Take Time**: Healing from narcissistic abuse is not a linear process; it takes time. Individuals should allow themselves to grieve and process their experiences without rushing the healing journey.
Conclusion
The effects of narcissistic abuse can be profound and long-lasting, impacting various aspects of a victim's life. Recognizing the signs of having suffered from such abuse is crucial for understanding the emotional turmoil and challenges that survivors face.
While the journey to recovery may be difficult, it is essential to remember that healing is possible. With the right support, resources, and self-care practices, individuals can reclaim their lives, rebuild their self-esteem, and find healthier, more fulfilling relationships in the future.
Awareness and education surrounding narcissistic abuse can help empower victims and provide them with the tools they need to break free from the cycle of abuse and embrace a brighter, healthier future.

Support the Inclusive Democracy Act of 2023 (H.R.6643 / S. 3423)
An open letter to the U.S. Congress
576 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
Despite his 34 felony convictions, Donald Trump has the wealth, connections, and privilege to ensure he doesn’t have to worry about his eligibility to vote this fall. But the millions of ordinary Americans currently disenfranchised by felony convictions aren’t so lucky. That's why, as your constituent, I urge you to co-sponsor and support the Inclusive Democracy Act of 2023 (H.R.6643 / S. 3423) to guarantee voting rights to ALL Americans. Right now, Jim Crow-style felony disenfranchisement laws deny voting rights to over 4.4 million Americans. The Inclusive Democracy Act of 2023 comprises a series of transformative measures that would end the broken system of felony disenfranchisement and empower marginalized communities: - Guaranteeing the right to vote in federal elections to all Americans who have criminal convictions. - Eliminating state-level barriers that prevent individuals with criminal convictions, whether they are incarcerated or have been released, from exercising their right to vote in federal elections. - Ensuring citizens in carceral settings have access to information about elections and candidates 29 Members of Congress have signed on as sponsors or co-sponsors of the Inclusive Democracy Act of 2023. If you haven’t already, please join your colleagues and add your name to that list. And if you’re already a co-sponsor – thank you, and please do everything you can to help pass this groundbreaking legislation into law.

Grab your character and shove their head underwater. Keep them pinned until they breathe in the water. Pull them up and let them splutter and cough. Push them under again. Pull them up. Let them use their precious seconds of air to beg. "Ple-Please, please stop — " Push them under again. Feel them squirm. Pull them up sooner; they couldn't hold their breath long enough. Once more for good measure. Don't let them up until they nearly suffocate. Pull them up and throw them to the ground, let them cough up all the water they swallowed. Pull them into your lap. They are shivering, the cold water having seeped deep into their bones. They are crying. They are going to try to pull away. Don't let them. Hush them gently. Card through their hair. Let them relax under your hands. Then drag them back over to the water. Put their nose right above the surface and keep their head right there. Let them imagine how it will feel to be pushed under again, held there, pulled up just so they can drown again. They will fight, they will sob, they will plead and barter and yell. They will be scared. Answer them with an order. "Take a deep breath for me." Watch them struggle to decide if they should. They probably won't be able to take one deep enough if they tried. Push them under. Watch them squirm. Repeat.
