This movie is spectacularly beautiful and was abandoned at the last minute by Paramount’s publicity department. Not so much based on Jeff Vandermeer’s book as set in the roughly the same world, this movie tells the story of an expedition into the Southern Reach’s Area X.

2.2 Bride of Frankenstein

Your Polterguides would like to apologize in advance for their rendition of “There’s a Light.” We’re so sorry.

The Polterguides watched the Universal Classic Bride of Frankenstein.  The 1935 classic holds up amazingly well after more than 80 years. Your Polterguides loved Mary Shelly’s sass, Dr. Praetorius’ little people in jars, and what actually went into the new monster’s brain.

If you haven’t seen Bride, SEE IT. You’ll notice its influence on everything from Weird Science to the Rocky Horror Picture Show (hence the weird cat-like screeching we subject you to at the beginning).

We also talk about changing male standards of attractiveness in the last 20 years.

1.17 Halloween

Your polterguides went old school. Back to 1978 for John Carpenter’s Halloween. We discuss the tropes that are so new they haven’t become tropes yet, like the sin rule and the final girl. We wonder how Michael learned to drive, how he found his way home, and the relative artistic merit of leaving a guy impaled on a kitchen cabinet rather than hanging upside down in a linen closet. Also, the unnecessary treatment of good, good doggos.

2.15 Wonder Woman

In which the Snarkers rave over Wonder Woman. We talk about what it meant to us to see this strong, powerful woman portrayed on screen as a warrior. We talk about Antiope and Amazon warriors and Steve Trevor and the multi-cultural team and that amazing, empowering, inspiring, emotional walk into no-man’s lands. We embrace, once again, the sexualization of the Chrisses. (we are for it).

You guys, we loved this movie. Is it perfect? No. But, just like Wonder Woman’s thigh jiggle does not make her less strong, this movie’s imperfections don’t make it less inspiring.
