1.17 Halloween
Your polterguides went old school. Back to 1978 for John Carpenter’s Halloween. We discuss the tropes that are so new they haven’t become tropes yet, like the sin rule and the final girl. We wonder how Michael learned to drive, how he found his way home, and the relative artistic merit of leaving a guy impaled on a kitchen cabinet rather than hanging upside down in a linen closet. Also, the unnecessary treatment of good, good doggos.

Polterguide Kenzi! Kenzi Whala can't recall a time when she wasn't a horror fan,her mother showed her Romero ' s Night of the Living Dead at an impressionable age of five. After that, she was hooked! A few years later at certain, red and green sweater madman would cement her love for all that is horror. Kenzi's two uncles like to tell the story of her chanting, "Get Em' Freddy..Get Em' ", while watching Nightmare on Elm Street. Kenzi tends to prefer more supernatural films, like the Conjuring 2 or The Exorcist. Though, she is an avid John Carpenter fan. Halloween and The Thing are always on her Top 10 list. She also loves discovering hidden gems, like Suspiria(thanks Stef!) Kenzi only has one real pet peeve ,when it comes to horror, and it's when something claims to be scary and doesn't deliver. On social media, it's not uncommon for her friends to ask her opinions/reviews on horrorfilms. Every October they are treated to 31 different scary movie quotes. To the curious about horror films, Kenzi recommends start with a classic, like Night of the Living Dead. Rather than jumping into the deep end with something like, House of 1000 Corpses or The Entity.

Polterguide Donna!
Writer, gamer, flake, Sooner, mom, dog-lover, nerd, geek, procrastinator, coffee addict, green-eyed curly girl Donna Leahey is the mother of one adult son. Leahey would like to say she’s Stephen King’s biggest fan, but that’s sorta a problematic phrase re:King, so she’ll just stick with being a big fan. As far as movies based off his books goes, she’s not been such a big fan, which has put her off horror movies in general.
Leahey has written more than a few horror stories of her own, along with works of fantasy and sci-fi. Her books can be found on Amazon, her thoughts can be read on the Purple Ink Blog, Purple Ink Facebook page, and her twitter, and heard on Collective Snark, a pop culture podcast which comes out every other week.

Polterguide Debbie! Growing up, Debbie lived a life sheltered from horror because, let's face it, she was a big scaredy cat and her parents got tired of her asking to sleep in their bed after watching anything remotely frightening. Like when the government found out about E.T. and he and Elliot were whisked away through quarantine tunnels by nefarious men, and Debbie slept in her parents bedroom for two weeks. (I was like, 5) Fast forward 20 years to when Debbie met Kenzi and a beautifully silly friendship was born (you can find Polterguide Kenzi's bio in a previous post). Kenzi eventually learned of Debbie's horror-deprived upbringing and attempted to persuade Debbie to dabble in horror flicks. Which, of course, Debbie immediately gave a hard pass. After about a year of coaxing, Kenzi provided Debbie with a syllabus for a "course" deemed "Horror 101." Kenzi's syllabus promised a slow, deliberate path into the horror realm by meeting with Kenzi once a week to watch a horror movie suggested by Horror-Sensei Kenzi, easing into the genre with milder movies and eventually ramping up to harder stuff. Debbie thought about it and finally agreed after adding stipulations that (1) the viewings would be conducted during daylight hours, (2) the viewings would be at Kenzi's place so Debbie would not associate fright with her own abode (because, now that she was adulting, she wasn't able to crawl into her parents' bed when she had nightmares), and (3) gory stuff was off the table. Thus, "Horror 101" began and eventually transformed into "Terror for Two Tuesday" and Debbie's love of horror! Wait, did you read that right? You did! Debbie's LOVE of horror! Debbie graduated from Horror School summa cum laude after she was able to sit through the capstone courses of "House of 1,000 Corpses" and "Devil's Rejects" and didn't have to close her eyes once!

1.22 Rob Zombie’s Halloween
With Polterguest Mac, we discuss the Rob Zombie take on Halloween, which we dub the Michael Myers Origin Story. Bloodier and grittier than the Carpenter version, Zombie turns Michael Myers from an inhuman monster into a sympathetic victim of his own upbringing.

Your Polterguides talk about Gerald’s Game.  We talk about kink-shaming, really offensive jokes, more kink-shaming, the need for frank conversation about sexy-time adventures, appropriate packing of sex toys, good doggos v. bad doggos, and Stephen King projects in general.

1.18 Halloween III
Halloween III. Oh, Halloween III. Tom Atkins (Atkins with a T!) and his mustache against the forces of Celtic Evil.
This movie took Carpenter and Hill back to their original vision of the Halloween movies as an anthology, but by that time, everyone expected Michael Meyers, and the movie didn’t do well due to that lack. Still, there’s some good stuff in here – the amazing cinematography of the trick-or-treating shots, a couple of nice surprise twists, and some truly gruesome stakes.
