i find it depressingly hilarious that i had thought of going to the rockies and yankees series vs the braves this year, but for two different personal reasons i ended up canceling the plans in both occasions, and it somehow ended up being okay because —although i’d love to go to any braves games— i would’ve been devastated by the main reason of me going being in the injured list (see: kb and rizzo) so. yeah. lol

Aetherwave Attraction
Zora Blackwood/Female Captain
(AO3)
A sweet sleepover brings a sweet confession.
Fluff. Sleepovers. Wine. Drunken confessions. Love confessions. Zora/Ophelia/ADA by extension.
"Captain, shall I prepare the serial?" ADA asked, already skimming files. She was thinking about playing Space Hospital, or maybe the thrilling Terror on Monarch series again.
"Yes, please. Could you put on Space Hospital, Zora loves it." Ophelia requested, tugging her tall purple socks up again. "Did you make sure we sent that invite on Monarch time?" She wondered, slipping into her oversized Rizzo's Rangers shirt.
"As you wish, I will continue the serial from the previous viewed episode. As for the invitation, I did correct it to Monarch time, and informed her of the time difference on the ship." ADA replied easily.
Ophelia had renovated her quarters some time back, removing the bed cubby for a larger mattress to fit her partners, and more importantly, she had light-blocking curtains installed, a projector fitted to play on the wall, and many more cameras for ADA.
"That's great, thank you, ADA." Ophelia praised. She was already walking out of the bedroom to the kitchen, ready to retrieve a few bottles of cold purpleberry wine for the evening.
"My pleasure, Captain."
"Captain, Zora has arrived. Would you like me to unlock the hatch, or will you be going down?" ADA asked, looking out in the late Monarch night at the leader waiting in moonlight. Zora was yawning, adjusting her grip on her gun, and looking around blearily.
"I'll go on down, thanks!" Ophelia squealed, running on down to the heavy hatch door.
"Zora! Hi!" She greeted cheerily. "I'm so glad we could have another serial night, it's been a while!" Ophelia moved to let her friend in.
"Captain, it's always a pleasure." Zora grinned, walking in and setting her heavy gun down by the lockers. "ADA, it's been quite a while." She greeted the astrogator, stepping into the doorway to see her terminal.
"Greetings, Zora. You are unharmed, good." ADA returned, smirking. "It would be a shame if you were, Captain Ophelia would be distraught." She was fired up today, it seemed.
"Oh, hush, you!" Ophelia squawked, grabbing the hem of her shirt with embarrassment. Zora just chuckled, leaned back against the doorframe.
"I'm glad you're worried for my wellbeing, Captain. I would be inconsolable if you were harmed, too. Can't have you running off and leaving my couch cold." Zora quipped, looking over to her left at Ophelia with a smirk. The way she slowly flushed red was endearing.
"I, ah..." Ophelia stammered, quickly looking off out the cockpit windows behind her. "ADA, why don't you get us up in the air, we need to go see that asteroid event!" She squeaked, inching past Zora to the Captain's chair to insert the special navkey.
"I know the event is tomorrow evening, ship time, so we have all morning for wine and serials!" Ophelia grinned. "Ship time is... Eight hours behind Monarch time? ADA?"
"Nine and a half hours, Captain. The ship time had been calibrated to Welles' Laboratory time when you and the scientist began working together." ADA interjected.
"Ah, thanks, ADA!" Ophelia spun around to grab the full wine glasses, one in each hand. "We have another thirty-four hours until the peak of the event. It's a long ride out, though, so make yourself at home." She gave one of the glasses to the quiet leader who nodded.
"I've got plenty of good company, then." Zora sighed, sipping the bitter-tart wine. She set it gently down on the desk and turned around to Ophelia who was getting cozy on the bed, tucking her feet up under her black blanket.
Ophelia smiled back at her, and leaned back into her nest of pillows.
Zora untucked her orange Iconoclast cowl and set it down on the corner of the bed, then started unbuckling armor.
Ophelia watched her silently, sipping from her own cup of wine. Her eyes wandered up and down Zora's toned body, taking in the sight.
She stripped down to her bloodstained tank top and underwear, then slipped into the soft grey sweatpants from her bag. Ophelia thought she looked wonderful.
"Alright, let me see what you two picked." Zora hummed, taking the few steps to the headboard of the bed and slipping in beside the extravagant space captain.
"Space Hospital, again... I know you like it, and well, it doesn't all completely fly over my head." Ophelia said, and ADA started playing when both girls got settled into the cozy bed.
They had been cuddling for hours, the serial long since over for the evening. Ophelia had worked through the bottles of wine with Zora, then they did shots of Spectrum Red while playing drunken chess, and had finished it off with an adventure in drunkenly cooking dinner.
"Hey, Ophelia, I'll be back in a minute, gonna get a snack." Zora sighed, wiggling out of Ophelia's weak grasp. The Captain frowned, and let go.
"Well, alright... Get me something sweet, then." Ophelia sighed back, rolling over onto her stomach in the absence of the strong leader.
Zora left quietly.
Zora did not go to the kitchen. Instead, she quietly shut the door after her, and requested ADA to keep Ophelia company.
She felt out of her depth, standing there at the railing. She leaned back against the pole nearest her, and crossed her arms.
Zora sighed, staring out in the distance.
She had been plagued by more and more thoughts, particularly of the relationship she had with Ophelia.
Of course, Zora wasn't dating the dashing Captain, they were just close friends.
They had sleepovers, and if Ophelia was on Monarch, she was sure to drop in to share supplies and a few cold drinks. Zora enjoyed her company. Even when Ophelia would ask to take her out, she always felt at home when they were together.
It was almost impossible for them to go long without communication, Ophelia would call, or Zora would, or they exchanged messages.
It was obvious that they were inseparable, and whatever they had was beyond just being friends.
Zora felt particularly guilty about ogling Ophelia's curves and thighs, especially if she was in her sultry sleepwear. She had been caught looking at the outline of the captains nipple piercings more than once, and Ophelia just smirked and puffed out her chest even more. Zora loved to cuddle her chest almost more than the delight of taking a break off-world with her, Ophelia always felt like a perfect weight against her and she never failed to fall right to sleep at night.
Ophelia was just as bad, she was almost caught sniffing the orange cowl Zora wore, in fact, she was almost caught multiple times. She would also stare at her with a dreamy and lost look when they shared hunts on Monarch, sitting across from her from the fire. Ophelia would sit there and take sips from her flask and take her time admiring her scar, then trail down her neck, biting her lip a little as she stared at where Zora's cowl didn't hide her collarbone.
It was simple, Zora thought, she didn't want to be without Ophelia, because they fit so perfectly. It was like they were attuned to eachother in a way no one else was, and this night had shown it.
This wasn't even their first serial sleepover, in fact, they had been regularly having them for years.
Soon after they had first met, Ophelia had muttered something about having never seen a serial, and Zora was all too eager to bring her back to her own home to show her Space Hospital over dinner.
They had been inseparable since then, with Ophelia divulging much of her own tale, and Zora helping her adjust to the new life in Amber Heights.
It was like coming home every time she came aboard the ship, ADA always greeted her while she shucked her boots off and stowed her gun, and if Ophelia was visiting her in Amber Heights, she just made herself cozy on the couch and got her own blankets.
Well, shit.
Zora did eventually turn and go up the stairs and to the kitchen. She made a warm cup of a soothing fruity tea and sat at the off white table with trembling hands. She didn't know what to do, Ophelia had worked her way deep into her heart and she didn't want her to leave.
She took a long drink of the warm tea, the heat of it warming her throat when her tears were cooling down her face.
Zora didn't want to lose Ophelia, the trips they had together were some of the best memories she had, and there were so many more they could have if they stayed together.
She didn't want to actually face the truth that she already knew, she loved Ophelia, and she loved her so deeply it hurt to think of her with someone else, too.
Zora didn't want anyone else to have her undivided attention, her dogged loyalty, or the stolen glances over firelight. But, Zora knew, that Ophelia and ADA loved eachother just as deeply and they wouldn't ever be separated.
If she thought about it, ADA was just as good of a friend, dogged in her loyalty and revenge. ADA had proven time and time again that she puts Ophelia above all else, and if something were to befall her captain, she was the first person to call.
"Zora, you have been gone from Ophelia for quite some time and have continued to look exceptionally worried. Is there something bothering you?" ADA asked, quietly coming in on the speaker.
Zora sighed and sat down her mug. She reached up and ruffled her hair, and reclined in her chair. She frowned.
"Unfortunately, there is. There's been a matter weighing heavy on my heart for some time now." Zora said, crossing her arms ove rher chest.
"Would it be of any benefit to speak to me about this matter?"
"I'm not sure. It's... Something very dear to my heart." The brunette sighed, and grabbed her tea again. It was in a silly Rizzo's mug, the one Ophelia was insistent on being lucky. It sent a pang through her chest, would someone else ever know how they found it at the factory in Cadcadia?
"If I may go out on a mataphorical limb, would the matter happen to pertain to Captain Ophelia?" ADA asked, getting it right. "You have been looking at her as if you were hiding a guilty secret." She chuckled.
"Well, yes. Really, it's like I can't get her out of my head, and I don't want to. But, I also know that.... That's your captain, and you two have something special." Zora confessed. She took another long drink of tea with a sigh.
ADA was quiet and pondered it a while.
"Ophelia speaks incredibly highly of you, and looks at you like you hung Olympus itself. I trust you with her, you have brought her back to me when many wouldn't have. I know that she loves you, just as she loves me in our own way."
Zora slunk back into the captains quarters some time later after ADA had asked for her to return. She had a new mug of trip-teaz, a relaxing one for bed.
"Hey, I thought you might like some tea." Zora said, spooking Ophelia.
"I didn't even hear you come back in!" Ophelia laughed, taking the warm mug. "But, yeah, thank you. We can split it, since it looks like you didn't bring yourself any." Zora nodded with a small smile, and climbed back into bed.
"Yeah, I had some before I came in... I got distracted in there." Zora confessed, she did have her own mug of tea while pulling herself together again.
"Everything okay, Zora? You've looked tense all day." Ophelia asked quietly, she set the mug on her bedside table and reached out to gently touch Zora's thigh.
"Well, I don't know." Zora sighed, putting her own hand atop hers. "I've just been doing a lot of thinking and meditating. Your invite got me excited to come out, and it had me thinking about our relationship. We've been attached at the hip since you came out to Amber Heights first, and now all these years later, we're still trying to figure out what we are and how we fit our lives together."
Ophelia frowned, and scooted a little closer.
"Yeah? It's got you worked up? I didn't mean to, I just get a little excited when we can free up and get out together..." Ophelia nervously replied.
"No, not like that. It's just that... I don't know where my life ends and yours begins. We're so close, I just can't think of what life I would have if you weren't in it so much. I can always look forward to that next message, call, and especially the days when you're there in Amber Heights with me." Zora said, looking nervous.
"Well, yeah! You're... You're like the Olympus to my Monarch. We're always in orbit of eachother, never far away and always there when it gets rough. I didn't want to give it a name, I... It felt like you would always be there, part of my life." Ophelia replied with a smile. She squeezed Zora's hand tightly. She wasn't the best with her words.
"Ophelia, I think what I'm trying to say here is that you've taken my heart, and I want you to keep it. I want to stay in your life now, and I have for a while. I've come to love you, your ship, and who we are together." Zora confessed, looking away with a flustered blush creeping in.
Ophelia smiled more, and she held in a squeal.
"Zora, you're one of the few people who understands me when no one else does." Ophelia giggled, she was still drunk, but it came from the heart. She scooted closer, pulling her blanket with her. She climbed into Zora's lap, gently cupping her scarred cheek and clumsily turning her head to look at her.
"I love you, Zora." Ophelia said sweetly, touching forheads.
"I... I love you too, Ophelia." Zora hummed. "But you're very drunk right now, and we'll have to talk again in the morning." She smiled.
"Yeah, I know. ADA will definitely make sure of it if you don't. She's been teasing me for weeks." Ophelia giggled. She grabbed Zora's face and pulled her in for a chaste kiss. "I'm exhausted."

"Fluffy February" - Day Three
The Outerworlds
Felix Millstone X Captain Dottie
Summary: Felix has never left the Groundbreaker, but now he's on a new ship with a new Captain. And she is ready to travel all over the system, and not only is she traveling the system in a cool ship with a dark past, she's traveling with him. After time on the ship, the first place he goes to is Roseway with the Captain along with her annoying Vicar friend, and Felix has seen nothing like it.
--------------------------------------------------
The Unreliable.
This was his new home, and by the way, this home has so much food. So much food. He still couldn't even process how they needed this much food for five people! He was standing infront of the fridge, door swung open, rummaging through the endless supply of food. The Captain gave him a bunch of Rizzos that she bought on Groundbreaker for him, and he had eaten all of it. Now, he wanted something salty, an actual meal.
The cabinets!
He might as well lunged to the cabinets and began digging. While doing so he didn't realize he was being examined by his Captain, and soon he came back with expensive whiskey. It had been hidden far in the back out of view and had Max scrawled out on the side. Felix smirked to himself.
"I can't tell if your hungry, or looking to get roaring drunk," she chuckled a bit, and Felix whipped around in embarrassment.
"Hey, Boss! Erm, what's up?" Felix said, while putting the whiskey back in shame.
"Hey, get that back out. I want some too," she smiled, walking to the fridge.
She was beautiful, and Felix was embarrassed for acting like an animal.
"Honey, don't let me stop you! I came to eat too, ya' know."
Felix turned red all over. He had never been called honey before, and it left him all flustered as he fumbled to retrieve the whiskey from the cabinet. He managed to grab it and close the cabinet door with his leg when he stood up. She smiled bringing glasses whilst setting down things to make food on the burner. Felix watched her long bare legs as she walked towards him. He heard the glasses clink on the table, and it brought him out of the trance he was in.
Stop being so obvious!
He wanted to shrink away, as he watched her strong arms move when she grabbed a pan off a rack. He had never had been cooked for, especially for free, and by a girl! Especially a girl!
Woman Felix, she's a woman, man!
He watched her begin to make something he had never had before.
"You like spicy stuff, Felix?" She asked him, and he perked up nervously.
"Yeah! I do. What erm about you, Boss?" Felix replied, and she laughed at him.
"Why are you so nervous, Millstone?"
"I am not!"
She shook her head, "Felix, did you see the game with Rizzos Rangers this evening?"
"Oh yeah! It was a great game, Boss! You like the Rangers, Boss?" Felix asked, his nervousness went away.
"Oh, I love them! They are a really good team! My favorite! I love the thirty-fifth back!" She smiled, and he poured himself some whiskey.
She was to perfect.. the perfect woman. She loves Rizzos Rangers, is super strong, and-.
"Pour me a glass, will you?" She asked, peeking back at him with her green eyes.
They are Auntie Cleo green...
"Sure, Boss."
"Come on, don't call me that. Call me, Dot."
"Okay."
Dot.
Felix awoke in his bunk with a headache along with a loud rap on his door.
"Open this door right now!"
The Vicar.
"Go get spaced, I'm sleeping!" Felix yelled back, and he rolled over to the window.
"Ada! I request you open this door! Now!"
"I cannot, Vicar. It violates the crewmate Felix's privacy. On another note, I will not tolerate disrespect from the likes of you, Vicar."
He cussed loudly, stomping down the hall. He made his way down the stairs to the Captain's Quarters, where he tried to compose himself enough to call for the Captain to sort out this mess.
"Captain!"
No response.
"Captain!"
Silence.
"Captain! I would like to speak with you!"
The door whooshed open where a very angry looking Captain stood. She wore nothing but a shorts and a odd top that ended far above her stomach.
"Captain! Make yourself presentable first!" Max scolded, all while red eared.
"This is what your getting for rudely tearing me from bed, Vicar. Now what is it?" She growled, and he tried to keep eye contact.
"What is that...that top?"
Please put a top on...
"It's called a sports bra. Spit out what you want. Now."
"Felix has taken one if my belongings, Captain," Max stated, and she rolled her eyes.
"Yeah. We both drank it. I will get you more. What are you even doing trying to drink this early? Or are you filling up that vial of yours?" She spoke, and he glared at her.
"That vial holds no such thing. You are mistaken, Captain."
"Yeah? Well, tell me what I took a big swig of then?"
Silence.
"Exactly, Vicar," she spoke, and then the door shut in his face.
Well played, Captain. I'll have to hide my spirits somewhere else...
Felix was excited. The Captain was going to Roseway now, and he couldn't wait. He had never been anywhere but Groundbreaker. He finished pulling his red sleeves on and began zipping it up while looking in the mirror. He looked at his wet hair through the steam in the mirror.
The water pressure is good here! And the water is warm! Not like that cold crap on the Groundbreaker!
He picked up his bracelet and slid it on his wrist, and then looked at all the toothbrushes in the cup on the sink.
Which one is mine? Do I use...um...do I have one? I lost mine when I moved in so, uh.
A knock erupted from the door, and he opened it, to reveal the Captian.
"I got you a new toothbrush. It's red, like your clothing," she spoke quietly, and he noticed she looked flustered.
"Aw thanks! What happened to my other one?" Felix asked, and she laughed nervously.
"I saw that it was...really old...and uh...well, I threw it out. It looked like it was really old. Sorry," she mumbled, and he smiled.
"Nah! That's fine! I just couldn't get a new one. Didn't have much money. Thanks, B-Dottie!" He smiled, and it was that boy-ish, cute smile he had.
She smiled and he closed the door when she left. He began brushing his teeth with joy.
This toothbrush is stiff...
He forgot what a new brush felt like. He'd only ever had one. The harsh bristles of the brush glided across his teeth as he though of his new serial-worthy Captain.
She's pretty, and looks like she could break my arm. Which is attractive too. I wonder if she is been everywhere. She seems like it. She has pretty eyes. A nice green. They have a look to them. I bet she's a good fighter and not some board lackey. Yeah! A rebel like me! That makes her even more hot!
Felix realized he had brushed his teeth until they bled, and quickly spat it all out of his mouth.
Oh no! Is this bad? Maybe I should see Ellie? Man, what does this mean? Crap! She probably is asleep! I'll go see the Captain.
Quickly Felix rushed out the door to see the Captain, where he spotted her heading down the stairs. He tapped her shoulder while spewing her name in panic.
"I brushed my teeth and now I'm bleeding!" He cried, and then she burst out laughing.
"Felix that's when you brush your teeth to hard! Your fine!"
"Oh."
He felt embarrassed and looked at his feet. The laughing ceased, and she put her hand on his forearm making him look at her.
"Don't feel bad! It's okay, Felix. I am glad you trust me to diagnose you!" She smiled sweetly, and footsteps came from behind.
"I came for my armor Captain," a voice that sounded an awful lot like a blood-boiling, loathing Vicar.
"Wait. He's coming?" Felix asked, and she sighed.
"You two are going to have to get along. I mean it. So, you'll get to bond over the mysterious Roseway mission," Dottie sighed, and Felix huffed.
He noticed some lockers up against the wall. Six to be exact. Dottie opens a door and began slipping armor on over her clothes.
"Your armor is in a locker over there, Felix," she pointed at the locker on the end.
"Has Ms. Fenhill expressed her concerns to you, Captain?" Max asked, and the Captain looked at him.
"Yes. She thinks it quote, this Roseway business smells, unquote. Do you have anything to say, Vicar?" Dottie asked slipping on her boots.
"I believe we should proceed with caution. This could very well be a trap," Max spoke, and Felix noticed Max's eyes linger a bit on Dottie.
Back off Vicar. She doesn't like you, man. Ew. Who would?
Felix pulled on his final armor piece besides his helmet and glanced back at Dottie, who now had her helmet on.
"Ready to go?" She asked him, and he nodded with an ear-to-ear grin.
This made her smile. She liked he's boy-ish smiles and light filled eyes. He was a dreamy, silly boy that makes her laugh. He proved that last night as they exchanged jokes over whiskey and spicy casserole.
Soon enough, they walked outside the ship. Felix's eyes squinted as the bright light outside hit his eyes, and the fresh air invaded his nose. Glancing around Felix saw beautiful plant life around him that was foreign to him.
Pictures and serials didn't do the outside world justice!
"Felix? Honey? Are you alright?"
He hasn't noticed the tears going down his face, and he grew embarrassed trying swipe them away.
"You've never been off Groundbreaker?" The Vicar asked.
"No. He hasn't. Hey, we can go anywhere you want, Felix! And here, let me show you something," Dottie spoke soft and timid, reaching into her pack.
She pulled out a journal, and opened it while leaning to show him.
"It can be our project. I've been putting different flowers and ferns and such inside from each planet. To remember things and stuff. I've been writing what I can that I know about them. We both can do it!" She smiled at him, and he looked at her pretty handwriting and plants smashed into the pages within the journal.
"Yeah, Dot! Can I sign it? Read the other pages?" He asked excited, while wiping some tears away.
"Duh! Your family now! You can write your name in it!"
His heart grew warm. He smiled and almost started crying, but held it back (he couldn't afford for that insufferable Vicar to see him like that again).
"Now," she began, slipping the book in her bag, "let's go!"
Family.
His heart was pounding with joy at the thought. If a family was a Captain who could break his arm, a pirate sawbones, a sweet mechanic, and a grumpy "Vicar" (that didn't really count)...well, this was a interesting family for sure.
And he didn't want it any other way, because life wasnt dull anymore, and now he had a purpose. He could go anywhere he wanted, no longer being shacked to the Groundbreaker by poverty.
And most of all...
I've got a family!

"Fluffy February" - Day Three
The Outer Worlds
She is to perfect.. the perfect woman.

What is your favorite piece(s) of dialogue in TOW? It can be from ADA, the Captain, companions, literally anyone in the game. I’m genuinely curious!
Mine would have to be when Max hints at making a BJ joke at Rizzo’s Factory or if you take Felix to the bar for Parvati’s quest and he asks if they should turn the lights down first bahahhaha.

the (current draft of the) first half of the big convo between phineas and leah under the cut
“This is unusual,” says ADA. “Hello, Dr. Welles. I hope you aren’t here to involve the Captain in an irrational scheme.”
Phineas has neither the breath nor the time to answer. He heads straight for the stairs leading to Leah’s quarters— and nearly crashes into the metal door suddenly barring the way. His heart pounds in his ears. “Blast it, ADA—“
“The Captain has requested that her sleep only be interrupted for medical emergencies.” ADA’s tone is just short of menacing. “Is this a medical emergency?”
“It’s an urgent matter.”
“On a scale from ‘spilled Zero-Gee’ to ‘Monarch imploding’, how urgent is it?”
Phineas stops short, crisis temporarily forgotten. “What kind of scale is that?”
“The Captain devised it herself. I admit, the lack of numeric reference points makes it difficult to use. I’m still mastering the finer points of it.”
“It’s an eight,” Phineas hazards.
ADA deliberates in silence. Phineas’s answer must prove satisfactory, because the door at last slides open with a hiss of pneumatics. “Very well. I’ll wake her.”
By the time Phineas reaches the top of the stairs, Leah is leaning against her doorway, waiting for him. She’s bundled up against the cold, in fleece pants and an oversized sweater, and something about her appearance is off. Her armband, Phineas realizes. She isn’t wearing it.
“What the hell’s going on?” asks Leah, blearily. She looks him up and down. “Law, how many stimulants are you on right now?”
“That isn’t relevant,” says Phineas, waving off the question. “I need to speak to you about a sensitive matter.” On the last two words, his eyes flick up to the ceiling meaningfully. He (seventy-three percent) trusts ADA herself, but recordings can be hacked; sensors can be hijacked. Until he and Leah decide on a course of action, it’s best to ensure any prying eyes remain in the dark.
“ADA,” says Leah, “can you give us some privacy?”
“Yes, Captain. I am capable of performing that action.”
“Okay, let’s try that again. ADA, turn off all surveillance devices outside the bridge until I ask you to turn them back on.”
“Understood, Captain. Please be advised that if you are crushed under a falling object while my sensors are disabled, I will be unable to detect that you require help.” An ostentatious sequence of three descending beeps plays from the ceiling, signaling ADA’s compliance.
“Accidental cyanide poisoning couldn’t have killed Dr. Miller,” says Phineas without preamble, now that they’re alone. “I examined his genome, and within it, I found the ability to taste and smell cyanide. It would have been impossible for him not to notice that his respirator was broken.”
Leah stands up straight, eyes alert, all her tiredness sublimating like naphthalene at room temperature. “Why the hell were you looking at his genome?”
“He wouldn’t be the first scientist the Board has assassinated through a staged lab accident. I started investigating as soon as I learned of his untimely death. At first, I thought I was merely being paranoid— but I was right. Dr. Miller’s death isn’t the simple case it appears to be.”
Leah sighs, touching her fingers to her forehead in an infinitely exhausted gesture. “The Board had nothing to do with it.”
“How can you be certain?”
“Because I know who did it.” She holds up a hand to keep him from interrupting. “It’s been handled. Before you ask, I can’t tell you who it was. And before you ask the next question, I can’t tell you why I can’t tell you, either. All I can tell you is that there’s nothing more for you to investigate.”
“Do you think I could have survived thirty-five years as an outlaw without learning discretion? Whatever you’re trying to protect me from, you don’t need to.”
“It isn’t about protecting you. I’m asking you to trust me on this, Phin.”
“I’m man of science. ‘Trust me’ isn’t enough of an answer, not even from you. If you won’t tell me, then I’ll be forced to continue investigating, whether you want me to or not.”
For a long moment, she holds his gaze, and no one speaks. Finally, shoulders slumping, she folds. “He wasn’t murdered.”
“You can’t possibly expect me to believe that, can you? You just admitted it wasn’t an accident.“
“It wasn’t murder, and it wasn’t an accident. Johan… turned off his respirator himself. He messaged me the night he did it. Explained his reasons, asked me to keep it a secret. That’s why I didn’t want to tell you. It was his last request.”
Leah isn’t making any sense. What she’s describing simply isn’t possible. Miller wasn’t a thief; he wouldn’t rob—
There it is: another damned splinter of Board conditioning Phineas can never extract. He was raised by Spacer’s Choice parents in a Spacer’s Choice town; propaganda was spoon-fed to him with his baby food, and one of the flavors was Rizzo’s Purpleberry Suicide Is Theft. Only the Hope’s colonists are free from that corruption. Only they can fix things.
And Miller knew that. He wouldn’t just abandon the colony. “Is that message the only evidence?”
Leah blinks at him. “Evidence?”
“I don’t doubt you believe what you’re saying, but I’ve dealt with the Board’s machinations for much longer than you have. Forgery is child’s play for them. They’re terrified of you after what you did at Tartarus, and they’re right to be. They would stoop to any means to throw you off the scent.”
“Phineas. He killed himself. That’s all.”
“Aha! Don’t you see? That’s precisely what the Board wants you to believe. Think about it logically, for a moment: Dr. Miller’s work was among the most successful of any researcher in Halcyon. What possible reason could he have for choosing to stop?“
Leah stares at Phineas, dumbfounded, as though he just declared that the speed of light is saltuna. Not simply an incorrect statement, but one so fundamentally wrong about the nature of reality that the listener doesn’t know where to start with corrections. Finally, she says, “You know about his kids. We were both there when he woke up.”
Phineas has a vague memory of Miller, minutes after dehibernation, mentioning something about the family he left behind on Earth: two daughters and three sons (or was it three daughters and two sons?) and a dozen grandchildren. The specifics hadn’t seemed important at the time. But now, Phineas — not a father, not a family man, and not accustomed to stepping outside himself — pauses to consider what the loss would feel like. A thought experiment. Leah, he supposes, is the closest analogue. If she were to die—
Multiply that by five, all at once, and Leah’s hypothesis becomes a sickeningly plausible alternative to murder. “But he lived with that reality for five months. What changed?”
“A few months back, he thought he found one of his grandkids’ names on a colony ship manifest from Dashkova. But two days before he died, he found out it was a different Jozefein Miller. They just happened to have the same name and be the same age. He… couldn’t handle it anymore, after that.”
Another plausible answer. There must be a flaw somewhere, if only Phineas can find it. “Dr. Miller wasn’t indentured. He didn’t have a body price. Why use such elaborate means to conceal his own suicide?”
“You,” says Leah, softly. “He knew how hard you worked to save us, and how much faith you put in us, and he didn’t want to disappoint you.”
“You’re certain of this?” asks Phineas, his stomach dropping to somewhere in the vicinity of Terra 2’s mesosphere.
“I’m certain. He was in a bad place for a long time. None of us want to disappoint you, Phin, but—“
“I failed him, didn’t I?” asks Phineas, unable to hear Leah over the wave of nausea rolling over him. “If I’d found the solution to reviving you all sooner, his children would still be alive. He would still be alive.”
Leah gasps — a sharp, broken little sound — and she puts her hand on Phineas’s shoulder, gentle and firm all at once. “No,” she says. “Look at me. Look at me. That isn’t your fault. We’re only here because you refused to give up on us. You dedicated your life to saving us. Just you, alone. You did everything you possibly could.”
“That’s what I can’t stand. I did my best, and it wasn’t good enough.” Phineas swallows down the lump in his throat, unable to meet her gaze. “I wasn’t good enough.”
Without warning, Leah pulls him into a hug he doesn’t deserve, pressing her cheek to his chest. She’s a wall of living warmth, proof that his failure wasn’t total, and his arms hang uselessly at his sides. He possesses the physical strength to push her away, but not the moral strength. “You were. What you did was a miracle, and you did it with no help from anyone. With the Board trying to hunt you down. You can’t blame yourself for not doing it sooner.”
She’s wrong, wrong, wrong. “Why can’t I?” Guilt fills Phineas’s lungs like water; crawls under his skin like Monarchian parasites. He doesn’t deserve her comfort. He doesn’t deserve any of this. “Dr. Miller is dead because of my failures. Dozens of colonists are dead because of—“
Phineas catches the confession halfway through, but it’s too late. Leah breaks the embrace quicker than if he’d turned into a mantisaur, and she backs up one step, then two. “What are you talking about?”
He should lie to her. Say that he meant the colonists whose hibernation chambers UDL stole for their Lifetime Employment Program research. He opens his mouth to tell her just that, and from far away, he hears himself say, “You weren’t the first colonist I attempted to revive. You were my first success.”
Leah takes another step back, her expression inscrutable, and Phineas waits for her reply like a prisoner waits for the firing squad. This must be what the colonists’ tachypsychia feels like: one moment, stretched into eternity. He’s hyper-aware of everything: his heartbeat, the stale taste of recycled air, the cold spots on his back from the loss of contact. He tries not to imagine Leah throwing him off the Unreliable, starting the engines—
“If we’re really gonna talk about this,” says Leah, “we should sit down.” Without waiting for a reply, she walks past him, heading for the stairs to the third level of the ship. She doesn’t look behind to see if he’ll follow.
A moment later, he does.

lmfao @ me getting home from that game now.  I feel like freshly scraped crud.  I am way too much of a feeb to handle these trips but it’s once a year so it’s worth it
so what had happened was, I thought we had ADA seats (my roommate needed space for his walker), but it turns out we didn’t, but like, in my feeb memory I was CERTAIN we had bought ADA seats and we were like “this won’t do” and ended up being moved to field level next to some relatives of Baez.  It was AWESOME.
What a great game.  Like all around excellent stuff.  Albert’s catch early on was AMAZING.  And we really thought there was gonna be a fight at a couple of moments, Willy was not happy after he was hit and then when the Marlins player took that nut shot, a bunch of cops stood by the dugouts to dissuade a fight.  but like what honestly are cops gonna do?  Arrest someone in a baseball fight?  there are no laws on the field!  lmao
it really did strike much how much Jeter’s regime has funned-down Marlins Park.  No more home run sculpture.  Everything is black instead of bright green and orange.  No more sea creature mascot races.  No more bongo cam.  Why doesn’t he understand that Miami should ALWAYS be extra and tacky?  We’re not meant to be classy.
Also it was way too fucking hot for the roof to be open.  Any warmer and I’d have been in a bad way.  A couple years ago I would have known the roof would be closed no question because it’s fuckin hot out there!  But Jeter thinks baseball MUST be outside and so we marinate in our own sweat.
Where we were sitting was great because every time they did a defensive shift, Javy would walk over and stand right in front of us, it was like being visited by Javy every few plays lol.
It was more sparse than I’ve ever seen Marlins Park during a Cubs game.  I can’t imagine what it’s like when it’s a small market team visiting.  Marlins Park has always been desolate but god it is such a team full of nobodies now.  Which is sad.  When I first started going to games there, there was Jose Fernandez and Giancarlo Stanton and Christian Yelich and Ichiro and Dee Gordon and Justin Bour and it was a fun joyful place.  Damn shame what ownership has done to that team.
Miami is as I remember it.  I still know it like the back of my hand.  It’s a city that still lives in my head.  I’ve moved enough that some cities have faded.  Tampa has faded.  Portland and Miami still live vividly.  We had decent luck with traffic and I fell into being able to react to the psychotic Miami driving style again.
My roommate had never been to an MLB game and I laughed at the way his face blanched when he asked a beer vendor for a tall boy of Corona and took it and cracked it open and THEN found out it was 14 dollars.  He was like, “... why?” and I was like, this is why I brought in my single permitted bottled water.  Tickets may be reasonable, but ballpark fare is just like begging someone to bankrupt you lol.
J-Hey played catch with the ball boy between innings and chatted him up.  The Marlins RF (whoever he is lol) didn’t do that.  As always I made sure I was sitting in prime Rizzo viewing territory.
it’s good to be home.  My entire body is protesting the day I just had but a 7-2 victory is a splendid way to spend an evening

ENSAYO:
“Born to run” de Bruce Springsteen, Ed DeBolsillo
“Amors sense casa” VV.OO Angle Editorial
