just thinking about Andrew having a rough session with Bee and she just gets up in the middle of it and leaves and Andrew sits in silence for a moment because he lost the fucking plot he has no clue why she just decided to leave and the she just comes back into the room with Neil who had been waiting in the lobby and Neil sits down next to Andrew and he's already got earbuds in and Andrew can faintly hear one of his playlists blaring and Neil just waits for the ok and then he's curling himself around Andrew and basically falling asleep while he and Bee finish their session.

digging out my eah content part 3: the monster/fairytale culture shock we deserved
ID: a set of sketchy digital comics of c.a. cupid using monster high slang in ever after. set one features cupid popping up behind cerise hood.
cupid: hey, beastie! cerise: what. cupid: what? cupid and cerise hold an awkward silence. cerise, snapping her fingers: ohhhh, is that slang? cerise: ahaha okay don’t mind me (louder:) haha cedar wait up
set two features ashlynn ella showing an excited cupid her sketchbook.
ashlynn: what do you think of my new designs? cupid: oh, total freak chic, ashlynn! ashlynn: ashlynn, tearing up: you could have just said you didn’t like them...
the final image is blondie lockes thoughtfully tapping away at her mirrorpad as cupid, off-screen, exclaims “fangtastic!” “clawsome!” “furricious!”

The Dumb Ox
Did you know that nickname was given to Thomas Aquinas by his fellow peers when he was still a student for being a quiet man, and they took it as his low intellect.
Turns out, when you're as smart as him, you get to write one of the most influential works of medieval theology that's still recognized today.
This has always been my initial vibe of this sholar, idk why but I always associate him with a rather stern, intimidating look.
But he was said to be humble and friendly. So don't be fooled with people who look mean, they might actually be the kindest.

In reference to the last ask you posted! Do you mind going over your tips on role-playing as that active-type character and/or digging up the thread of conversation it seems the original asker was referring to? I'm so interested in your experience role-playing for both prep in possibly joining a game someday and also bc it sounds like such good character creation and general writing advice!!!! I tried checking you blog but didnt turn up anything that touched pn it more (No worries if not though!)
Sorry for this late response!
My advice is make characters that create opportunities for story.
Reacting to a story is fun! Reacting to a character is fun! But if you're always reacting then you're creating opportunity for other characters to react, so sometimes you gotta Act to let the other characters and the story React.
To do this, characters should all want something. And not something vague (like "to be happy"), it should be something more tangible, more specific, and everything else can stem from there. It'll guide your character naturally. It's their Motivation.
More under the cut (or skip to the end for more standard advice)
For example, my dnd character Dandelion wanted more than anything to go home. "Going home" meant a lot of things, yeah it means being happy, it means he wants to be with his family, it means he wants to be loved, it means he wants to feel safe, it means he wants to belong somewhere, but the tangible idea is "go home."
Because I knew this is what he wanted most of all it guided all his actions, and his actions for better or for worse all made sense because of it (and I made it clear that was what he wanted "on-screen" on multiple occasions). So anything that involved the idea of getting home would activate him, and he'd also deeply empathize with anyone and anything else away from home/away from family. Giving him one strong, clear motivation instantly made him an active participant in the story. This made him active with other characters too, any mention of home, any mention of family, any idea of not belonging, it drew him toward them.
(as a DM now this is also what I need more than anything, what's your hook? how can I tempt you? how can I make your character move forward? how can I make your character react? also characters that create opportunity for story take a LOT of work off the DM's shoulders in my experience, it shows you're engaged and it feels less like dragging a cat around on a leash haha like "are you enjoying this? do you want this? i don't know! please give me something!")
my more standard advice?
Be a good listener
Be present (in the moment)
Be curious
Be the biggest fan of all the characters
Put your story on-screen frequently, give people the opportunity to react to it and join in on it (this can be as simple as "my character's body language changes at the mention of 'home')
Create opportunities for the other characters to have their story on-screen (ask them questions! if you know what the character's buttons are and it makes sense in the moment, press them! listen to what they're saying, pay attention to what they're doing, and react to it)
Interact with the world! Interact with each other! And make these things mean something to your character!
Your character should make mistakes. Mistakes create opportunity for everyone.
If there's a genre, or theme, play toward them earnestly.
The more you RP, the better you'll get at it! It's a process and that's okay!
my little tip for knowing whether your character is Active vs Reactive: if the story were a musical, do they have an I Want song? do they have multiple moments for songs within the narrative? have they shared a duet with another character? do their songs change, evolve? songs happen for important moments in a musical so if you're not contributing to important moments, it may mean you're reacting more than you're acting. which is fine if you're playing a game solo and are granted access to the narrative by virtue of being the designated main character, but because RPing is collaborative storytelling, everyone should be doing their part!

Hey, you're actually supposed to change, and especially when you've gone through something traumatic, it's nearly impossible not to change. Going through something horrific doesn't automatically mean you've "changed for the worst". Making a mistake due to the trauma you've experienced doesn't automatically mean you've "changed for the worst" either. Sometimes, shitty events cause us to do shitty things, and while that's something we should aim to change, it's important to recognize that you're not an evil person for fucking up. You're not irredeemable. You're not a monster. You're not unworthy of friends or love. Try not to hold these mistakes over your head for the rest of your life; it's just not worth it and doesn't benefit anyone, actually - most importantly, it doesn't benefit you.
And if you've changed once, you can change again anyway. Who's stopping you?

you know, when tumblr staff fucked with the dashboard and made it look like twitter and refused to change it back, i'm sure they assumed we would just get used to it and shut up. but i still hate it! every time i check the site, i don't recognize it! i still think it looks awful, busy, and cluttered, and no longer aesthetically pleasing enough to leave open. it's still a unnatural hassle to navigate! i still want the profile pics of my mutuals on the side of their posts, i actually miss seeing my friends. i still want the toolbar horizontal on the top and the notifications to drop down. i still don't want that navigational garbage clinging to my feed! it's genuinely and persistently infuriating to me lmao

It's really frustrating being trans sometimes with cis loved ones because other cis people will go, "oh but it's such a huge adjustment for them! They're grieving for your pre-transition self/they aren't used to the change yet/it's hard on them!"
It's just so frustrating that people forget that trans people's feelings on this matter, too. Cis people aren't the only ones who have adjustments to make. Frankly, as much as I sympathize with cis people in this position, I can't help but be really jaded about it because so often, cis people jump to the defense of other cis people and they will seemingly forget to or refuse to give the same grace to trans people.
#trans#transgender#lgbt#lgbtq#ftm#mtf#nonbinary#like at what point is it 'they aren't used to it yet!' and it morphs into 'that person is actively refusing to acknowledge you'#i'm at a point now where i have been out as trans for half my life. at what point is this willfully refusing to see *me*#it's just amazing that it doesn't matter what the trans person could do because it's their fault for bringing 'burden' onto cis people#i UNDERSTAND that it can be hard for family for instance to flip a switch with their trans loved one...#...but i can't help but notice that so often it's because they *refuse to try*#why is it that cis people can do almost anything to trans people but trans people must be perfectly understanding and perfectly...#...content with whatever cis people in our lives have to say about how hard it is on THEM...#...like that's insulting to me. imagine being so willfully incompassionate...#...i'm worried about if i'm safe in my own workplace or in my gym or in a medical setting...#...i feel like we need a sense of scale about who is most affected by transness in this scenario...#...because i would RATHER be grieving over somebody's transness than worrying if i'll be hatecrimed...#...there's a difference in the experience between a trans person and the cis people in that trans person's life learning to adjust to...#...that person's transness. which is why i don't think it's comparable to say that cis people have it just as hard in this case#transphobia#transphobia tw
