More Halloween thrills and chills are on the way—make sure to follow us daily for new Halloween-related costume posts all month long! In the beloved 1993 Halloween classic 𝑯𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔 𝑷𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔, Vanessa Shaw’s character wore this incredible peach robe à la française to her parents’ Halloween Party. However, this piece did not originate with 𝑯𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔 𝑷𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔! It was initially designed by James Acheson for Michelle Pfeiffer as Madame De Tourvel in the 1988 film 𝑫𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝑳𝒊𝒂𝒊𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒔. Find out where else this costume has been used at bit.ly/StuGeo069

So I Saw This Costume...
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein / Helena Bonham Carter as Elizabeth Lavenza
Elizabeth wears this gown to a dance held in honor of Victor Frankenstein going off to study at the university, a scene which takes place in 1789. The front of the gown is embroidered with flowers, leaves, and what appears to be wheat. We can see in the bottom photo that the embroidery continues around the back.
Frock Flicks did a great writeup of the costumes for this film, which were designed by James Acheson. I borrowed several of their photos, in fact!

Narcissa had been giddy with excitement since her outing with the lord of the day court, he had a way of igniting her like no other could, the happiness and the smile always remained even days after he had been with her. however this time she did not had to wait too long to see him again. as soon as she spots him in the middle of the crowd she is quick to rush to him, not caring what other would think a new carefree face of hers she was not questioning. coming from behind him she covers his eyes with her hands, "you might get a price of your choosing if you know who i might be." she says in a playful manner, a smile almost from ear to ear.

CLOSED ; for @illuminatingeclipse's TIERNAN.
in spite of her churlish behaviour and her diamond crusted tongue causing pause in a more polite manner of speaking, breeding is in the bones. she offers a reluctant, shallow curtsy to the lord of spring, unable to feign ignorance of his status as per their conversation at the lantern festival. jia remembers leaving with a slight bow of her head and no promise to meet again. yet, luck should have it, in the name of tarot cards and reading the stars, they should be so lucky to encounter each other once more. well, jia was not so sure they were lucky. if she had her way, they would all be winnowed home and this moment would remain as a beautiful dream full of strangers she did not allow herself to meet on even footing.
“lord tiernan,” she straightens her knees, and comes up short to his significant height. this is annoying. there’s the softest of furrows to her brows, trying with all her might not appear so sour-faced again. “what brings you to the gardens?” she asks this, not quite sure how to ask what brought him to her family’s personal gardens. they were so expansive it was not so shocking to think it might be an accident.

☆゚*·゚ELLIE WANTED TO make sure that everyone staying at the dusk court was happy, especially now that their magic was back. and if they weren't, she wanted to find a way to make them feel better. that was how she found herself scouring the grounds to find the prettiest flowers she could find. once she'd found the most colorful ones, ellie went right into making flower bracelets. she now had quite a few in a little basket and was trying to make friends. walking right up the first person she saw, ellie's eyes widened. not only was he tall, but he was beautiful. "oh goodness, hi." she fidgeted in her spot, trying to find the best bracelet for him. settling on a pretty blue one that would compliment his skin, she held it out to him. "i uhm..." ellie chuckled, feeling a little nervous. "i made you a flower bracelet. i'm trying to uplift spirits and i thought this might help."

Many monsters in the original Doctor Who series were the result of collaboration between the BBC's costume, makeup and visual effects departments, or with freelance firms.
A perfect example would be the namesake aliens of 'Terror of the Zygons'; the initial design was sketched by the serial's assigned costume designer James Acheson (future Oscar-winning costume designer of Time Bandits, Brazil, Dangerous Liaisons and The Last Emperor). Acheson looked at half-formed embyros in amniotic sacs for inspiration!
It was beyond the capacity of the BBC's own costume department to make, so Acheson turned to sculptor John Friedlander of the BBC's Visual Effects Department. Friedlander sculpted the ribcage, head and face of the Zygon suits.

The beautiful yellow robe à la française with burgundy échelle designed by James Acheson is genuinely a work of art. Laura Benson initially wore it as Emilie in the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons. Its intricate details and stunning color combination make it so memorable that it was immediately identifiable when it appeared a second time worn by Mira Sorvino as Marta in the 1994 film Barcelona.

One Dress a Day Challenge
April: Yellow Redux
Dangerous Liaisons / Glenn Close as the Marquise de Merteuil
Today I learned that this style of jacket is called a caraco. According to Wikipedia, the caraco was adapted from styles worn by working-class women first became fashionable for informal wear in the 1760s, which is right around the time this movie is set. So the Marquise is up to the minute in style but also comparatively dressed down--though it's amazing to think of calling this beautiful silk jacket and skirt "dressing down"!
The black accents and accessories definitely add to the effect. Note that her gloves have yellow stripes on the back, so they match the outfit. She also wears earrings of gold with black beads (probably jet).
