The various masks sculpted by John Friedlander, resident sculptor for the BBC Visual Effects Department before going freelance.
Both as a BBC employee and freelancer, Friedlander contributed several prosthetic masks for the original run of Doctor Who, inspiring later British prosthetic makeup artists such as Neill Gorton of Millennium FX who would recreate many of Friedlander's designs with modern prosthetic makeup techniques on the 2005 rebooted series.
Examples of Freidlander's work; Ice Warriors in 'The Seeds of Doom', Ogrons in 'Day of the Daleks', Sea Devils in, uh, 'The Sea Devils', Draconians in 'Frontier in Space', Sontarans in 'The Time Warrior' and 'The Sontaran Experiment', Davros in 'Genesis of the Daleks', , Vogans in 'Revenge of the Cybermen', Sutekh in 'Pyramids of Mars', Kraal in 'The Android Invasion', and Scaroth in 'City of Death'

"Allure is something that does exist. "Allure holds you...whether its a gaze or a glance in the street or a face in a crowd...it pervades...you are captured by it." Diana Vreeland, Fashion journalist Two vintage photographs by Richard Avedon from the 1950s were the initial inspiration for the Susanne von Meiss Collection. For 25 years now, the Swiss journalist, publicist and entrepreneur has been collecting photography with the special focus on "allure". The Susanne von Meiss Collection representatively covers all genres and styles in the history of photography — from the 1920s through to the present. It includes works by internationally renowned photographers, however for the main part it does not give preference to the iconic photographs but rather to unknown classics. The personal selection ranges from Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Rene Burri and Henri Cartier-Bresson through Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn, Paolo Roversi and August Sander to contemporary artists such as Tracey Emin, Nan Goldin, Daido Moriyama, Richard Prince and Juergen Teller. The collection was presented to the public for the first time at C/O Berlin 28.05. – 04.09.2016

round up // MAY 24
Who cares what the calendar says? Ryan Gosling has declared summer is officially here!
Between longevity of the “Beavis and Butt-Head” Saturday Night Live sketch I shared last month, his extremely fun red carpet appearances, and the wonderfully fun The Fall Guy, he’s been everywhere, and I have no complaints about it.
But The Fall Guy and the other new releases in this Round Up aren’t the last summer movies to look forward to. I stopped by KMOV to preview some of the movies I’m most excited for this summer, including a star-studded rom-com set in the ‘60s, a legacy sequel action spectacular, a mystery starring a recent Best Actress nominee, and a prequel for a genre I rarely like. Let’s take on the summer as Ryan Gosling commands in The Fall Guy: “Jean-Claude, attaqué!”
May Crowd-Pleasers
1. The Fall Guy (2024)
Most movies go to great pains to hide their seams, but not The Fall Guy. And who needs to when a behind-the-seams look can be so fun? Summer 2024 is starting off with a bang because it’s a blast both as an action-adventure and as a romantic comedy, making it one of the easiest movies to recommend to just about anyone. Read my full review for ZekeFilm or watch out my review for KMOV. Crowd: 10/10 // Critic: 8/10
youtube
2. John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA (2024)
It’s not hyperbole to say I adored this weird and wonderful talk show experiment. Experts on palm trees and coyotes did most of the talking, Bill Hader and Pete Davidson couldn’t stop giggling, and John Mulaney kept asking about what kinds of cars people drive. Only a handful of clips have been added online from this live six-episode series…
"The Map of Los Angeles"
"Reverse Borat"
"Oh, Hello Manson Tour"
"Nepo Babies"
…but if Mulaney ever decides to resurrect his late night format of taking calls, discussing non-urgent topics, and creating sketch comedy with his friends and seismologists, I’d watch it every night.
3. IF (2024)
Not everything about the logic of IF hangs together, but one of the beauties of an original world is not being encumbered by mythology and continuity. IF is about dreaming big, and it’s for kids and families who want to be dazzled by a story imaginative in every sense of the word. Read my full review for ZekeFilm. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/10

4. SNL Round Up
That’s a wrap on season 49! These sketches will be holding me over till the Saturday Night Live’s golden jubilee begins in the fall:
“Teeny Tiny Statement Pin” (4618 with Dua Lipa)
“OBGYN” (4618)
“Hot Ones with Beyoncé 2” (4619 with Maya Rudolph)
“Weekend Update: A Woman Who Insists She's Not Mad” (4619)
“Monologue” (4620 with Jake Gyllenhaal)
“Dad Has a Cookie” (4620)
“Fast Fashion Ad” (4620)
“NYPD Press Conference” (4620)
And if you're still laughing at "Beavis and Butt-Head" from Ryan Gosling's episode last month, don't miss these behind-the-scenes articles about the viral fave:
“Heidi Gardner Couldn’t Prepare for What She Saw,” Vulture.com (2024)
“Ryan Gosling’s Viral Beavis and Butt-Head Skit Was 5 Years in the Making,” gizmodo.com (2024)
5. Zillow Gone Wild (2024-)
@ZillowGoneWild has been one of my best Instagram follows for years, so you know I’m all in on the HGTV series. Can you live inside a former missile silo? Did you know a real-life house inspired the dwarfs’ cottage in Snow White? How would you renovate a 17,000 square-foot church to make it a home? Host Jack McBrayer is stopping by the craziest Zillow listings (and more than once in my hometown of St. Louis), which you can imagine inspires hilarious commentary along the way.
MORE MAY CROWD-PLEASERS // Olivia Rodrigo’s bonus tracks on GUTS (spilled) (2024) are five more album-worthy pop-punk bangers and folksy bops // Even though I find puppets unsettling, the Prime rom-com Música (2024) is proof Camila Mendes has the “it” factor and writer/actor/director/musician Rudy Mancuso should direct a full-blown musical // Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) is the least successful of the modern Apes franchise, but I’m still in on this dystopian adventure world // It’s a shame Rutherford Falls (2021-22) was cancelled just as it was finding its groove in Mike Schur’s canon with its big ideas like The Good Place, its small town cast of characters like Parks and Recreation, and its problematic lead like The Office // Angela Lansbury time travels to the Antebellum South in a mystery with thorny issues still relevant today in Murder, She Wrote: The Last Free Man (2001)
May Critic Picks
1. The Way We Were (1973)
After a longer-than-planned hiatus, SO IT’S A SHOW? has returned! We’re breaking our typical mold in our seventh and final season (much like the seventh season of Gilmore Girls—IYKYK), and after a quick catch up in ep. 137 (though not without plenty of discussion of what the Palladinos are working on right now and a new Gilmore children’s book), we dig into our newest pop culture reference. In ep. 138, we’re discussing the the ‘70s weepy The Way We Were, which features a Palladino-esque heroine, Robert Redford in a cable knit sweater, heartache, laugher, and Communism all in one neat package! We discuss the cultural changes in parenting since then, why the Gilmores reference this movie several times in the series, and yes, Robert Redford in that cable knit sweater. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10
2. Persuasion by Jane Austen (1817)
Jane Austen—you ever heard of her? She’s pretty good! Though it always takes me a minute to get into the rhythm of her writing, her characters and plotting never disappoint. This romantic comedy focuses on lovers separated by society reuniting almost a decade later, and as always, their story is funny and swoon-worthy.
3. Audrey Hepburn in Paris by Meghan Friedlander (2024)
I have admired Audrey Hepburn as a performer, fashion icon, work-life balance enthusiast, and humanitarian since I was 15, and the creator of Rare Audrey Hepburn has captured the beauty of each of those roles in her first book. With a journalistic attention to detail, Meghan Friedlander reports on the sets, theaters, and fashion houses Hepburn graced during her frequent visits to France. This book is both a unique biography and a gorgeous coffee table book that fans of Hepburn, fashion, and film history won’t want to miss.
4. Thelma & Louise (1991)
Kyla and I also chatted about the crime classic Thelma & Louise on SO IT’S A SHOW?. What does this movie have to say about female friendships? What did we think of THAT ending? And is Rory totally a Thelma? We discuss that and more in ep. 139. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8.5/10

The Raven (1935)

Alanna Vagianos at HuffPost:
The general counsel for Florida’s Department of Health, John Wilson, resigned earlier this month — and new court records show it was because he was uncomfortable sending threats on behalf of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) to TV stations for airing pro-choice political advertisements. A sworn affidavit from Wilson revealed on Monday that DeSantis deputies personally wrote the threats to news channels and directed Wilson to send them out under his name. Wilson said he received the drafted cease-and-desist letters the morning of Oct. 3, 2024, and that he signed and sent them out later that day. “I did not draft the letters or participate in any discussions about the letters prior to October 3, 2024,” Wilson wrote. He resigned a week later “in lieu of complying with directives from [DeSantis’ attorneys] to send out further correspondence to the media outlets, similar to the October 3, 2024, letters,” he wrote in the affidavit. Wilson wrote that DeSantis’ general counsel and deputy general counsel directed him to send the letters in his name. (Scroll all the way down to read Wilson’s full affidavit.)
Wilson hinted when he resigned that the threats to TV stations were part of his decision. “A man is nothing without his conscience. It has become clear in recent days that I cannot join you on the road that lies before this Agency,” he wrote in his resignation letter. Wilson’s statement is the first evidence that directly links DeSantis’ office to the attacks on the state’s pro-choice ballot initiative. The administration has been using taxpayer dollars to wage an all-out war against the state’s pro-choice measure, and state officials have spread misinformation about Amendment 4, which would repeal the governor’s six-week abortion ban and restore access to fetal viability. Until this point, however, the attacks have been made through DeSantis surrogates, many appointed as top administration officials. “These current stories all look past the core issue — the ads are unequivocally false and put the lives and health of pregnant women at risk — Florida’s heartbeat protection law always protects the life of a mother and includes exceptions for victims of rape, incest, and human trafficking,” Julia Friedland, deputy press secretary for DeSantis, told HuffPost.
The cease-and-desist letter Wilson signed and sent to multiple local news channels threatened to bring criminal charges against outlets that aired an ad in support of the abortion rights measure. Floridians Protecting Freedom, the group behind the amendment, sued the Health Department in response, naming Joseph Ladapo, the state’s surgeon general and head of the department, as well as Wilson.
According to former Florida Department of Health General Counsel John Wilson, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and his deputies were behind the threats to TV stations that aired a pro-Amendment 4 ad. Wilson resigned over DeSantis’s intimidation tactics.

Many monsters in the original Doctor Who series were the result of collaboration between the BBC's costume, makeup and visual effects departments, or with freelance firms.
A perfect example would be the namesake aliens of 'Terror of the Zygons'; the initial design was sketched by the serial's assigned costume designer James Acheson (future Oscar-winning costume designer of Time Bandits, Brazil, Dangerous Liaisons and The Last Emperor). Acheson looked at half-formed embyros in amniotic sacs for inspiration!
It was beyond the capacity of the BBC's own costume department to make, so Acheson turned to sculptor John Friedlander of the BBC's Visual Effects Department. Friedlander sculpted the ribcage, head and face of the Zygon suits.

Episode 674, in which Chris is trying to give Carolyn's pushy acquaintance Donna Friedlander ("She behaves as though we're the best of friends, which we're not") the brush-off.
It's still his time of the month, he's pleading a migraine, and she's not taking the hint. She's also insinuating his cottage is a dump, but I think that's just the setup for the old "All it really needs is a woman's touch" gambit. And the only time that's not obnoxious is when it's being used as lesbian subtext in a Doris Day musical.
Chris, my boy, you need to get more creative with your excuses. Nothing keeps the pushy girls away like a fake case of explosive diarrhea. "I'd love to stay and chat, Donna, but if I don't get to the john right this instant, this living room is going to be a dump in more ways than one, if you know what I mean. Say, did you know that the last guy who lived in this cottage was a murderer?"
P.S. This isn't the first time Barnabas has invited people to an impromptu late-night dinner party. What does he serve? Does he drag Willie out of bed to cook a meal from scratch, or is it just crackers and caviar or fondue or Welsh rarebit or something?

For the character ask: Skippy
Also, because I know you're in the fandom, how about Starflight?
YESSIRRRR OKAY
here’s the thing:
https://www.tumblr.com/okaratauri/759735234791129088/give-me-a-character?source=share
OKAYOKAYOKAY FOR SKIPPY
How I feel about this character
I RELATE TO HIM WAY TOO MUCH. He is literally me im just not as big of an asshole EXECPT TO ONE FRIEND. I am legit his Skippy and he’s Joe. 100%
Skippy’s character development/design is beautiful. He has a slow burn development that you kinda don’t notice, until you do. Just like Rodney McKay from Stargate. The parallels between Rodney McKay/John Sheppard and Skippy and Joe are all too similar. I’m convinced the author based Skip and Joe’s duo off of Sheppard and McKay. I’m also a SUCKER for the arrogant genius tropes. Skippy is my all time favorite character of all fandoms ever, which is funny bc that title had belonged to McKay which further proves my point.
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Nagatha. Those two are freaking adorable. Nagatha and Nagatha alone. Sorry doll lol
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Halloween colors oooo
okay I really like Frey and Skippy’s friendship. The way she sings with him and makes him feel wanted and not like he’s a burden to talk to? Amazing. I’m here for it 100%. Also Skippy and Tripps! I would’ve KILLED FOR TRIPPS TO SURVIVE OH MY G O D. AHHHH. Also Skippy and Friedlander is hilarious. And Skippy and Joes mom. I can see her chatting away with Skippy over tea about Joe, Skippy tryna learn more about his favorite monkey and Joes mom tryna make sure Joe is doing alright and hearing about his adventures kicking rotten kitty ass.
My unpopular opinion about this character:
Home front was amazing. Seeing as it was written by skippy. My only problem with home front was the battle cries that’s it, I bore through everything else and loved it.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
I wish he actually snuck a puppy onto the ship…or had more heart to hearts with bishop…or yk…
TRIPPS SURVIVED AND THEY INTERACTED MORE??? PLEASE??? GAH. IMA KILL ALANSON. (Not really) BUT OH MY GOD 😭😭😭
OKAY NOW FOR STARFLIGHT
How I feel about this character
baby boi baby
I wanna hug him 😭😭😭 he deserved so much 💀 it’s not his fault he was born into a bunch of racist, god complex, lyin little worms! Honestly his queen reminded me of the Maxholx commander Reichert loll. Anywho I was so sad when he lost his eyes but also that’s really cool to visualize. He needs a scavenger companion.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
I think him and Sunny are a-freaking-dorable! I haven’t read the series in a while but yeah him and Sunny I can’t change it it’s too good. Ik I haven’t branched out from canon much but sometimes canon is so good it can’t be changed.
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
Star flight and Glory. The quiet, introverted, people pleasing bookworm and the loud, sassy, bulldozer of a queen. Love it so much. Also I feel like Starflight and Cricket would be such a great duo to follow.
My unpopular opinion about this character
uhhhhhh idk lol. It’s been a long while since I read the series.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
I wish he got a scavenger friend or two to help him in the library. Ik that’s it and boring but srsly it would’ve been adorable.

If everyone listened to the stupid satirical leftist podcast Matty was on they’d feel very silly for making it such a big deal. The hosts (Adam Friedland and Nick Mullins) said Matty was watching Ghetto Gaggers. Later on they issued a statement that said they don’t know what porn he watches they just said that name because it had alliteration and sounded funny. He also didn’t make the Ice Spice joke (which was about her name, not about her ethnicity).
Matty should have never done the podcast but he also said on stage last year that Black people should get reparations, got banned from Malaysia for kissing a man along with a $2million lawsuit. He did the first carbon removed concert at the O2 in London, flies commercial even though he doesn’t need to, almost exclusively wears vintage clothes to be more sustainable. Matty is a tattooed golden retriever who would never hurt a fly.
i'm familiar with those creators (years ago i listened to red scare) and i just relistened to the clips and the way they talked about women and tried to make edge lord racist ass jokes was fucking pathetic and gross and matty is the one who said "I think it literally was ghetto gaggers on the tv". with the ice spice stuff it's STILL awful because he just sat there and giggled like nothing makes him happier than to hear a black woman be called a "chubby Chinese lady". he was GLEEFUL with laughter while they were imitating asian people's accents.
that's the thing about matty- he's your typical white liberal male who will say things to make himself sound good but when it comes up to actually doing stuff like telling his asshole friends to shut up when they say dumbass racist, sexist shit like that he won't do it.
the gay kiss in Malaysia was by no means ok because it was actively harmful to the lgbt community there. it's just again typical white male liberal who can't stand when everything is all about him.
matty's a dumb piece of shit. no, he's not literally hitler like some people try to make out, hell he's not even taylor's worst boyfriend (john and jake are both actively abusers and joe might be too the jury's still out) but he IS a dumb piece of shit and people are right when they call that out and if he does watch ghetto gaggers like he said he did he's financing the sexual torture of black women. so yeah... he would hurt a lot more than a fly.

“In early modern cities, malodors migrated from sewers to a sociocultural equivalent: poor people—the pongy masses who couldn’t afford to mask the odors of the body with perfume or neutralize the stench of the neighborhoods where they lived. Ragpickers were particularly shunned, because their work took them to the city dumps. Prostitutes were considered repugnant for the obvious reason that they were more exposed to infection than most people, and specifically because they were exposed to a lot of semen—the aura seminalis being a powerful odorant when put in contact with the female sexual orifice. [...] Nasty smells were like grave sins...”
— Beau Friedlander, “A Brief History of Scent”
“In the period of which we speak, there reigned in the cities a stench barely conceivable to us modern men and women. The streets stank of manure, the courtyards of urine, the stairwells stank of mouldering wood and rat droppings, the kitchens of spoiled cabbage and mutton fat; the unaired parlours stand of stale dust, the bedrooms of greasy sheets, damp featherbeds, and the pungently sweet aroma of chamber-pots. The stench of sulphur rose from the chimneys, the stench of caustic lyes from the tanneries, and from the slaughterhouses came the stench of congealed blood. People stank of sweat and unwashed clothes; from their mouths came the stench of rotting teeth, from their bellies that of onions, and from their bodies, if they were no longer very young, came the stench of rancid cheese and sour milk and tumorous disease. [...] For in the eighteenth century there was nothing to hinder bacteria busy at decomposition, and so there was no human activity, either constructive or destructive, no manifestation of germinating or decaying life, that was not so accompanied by stench.”
— Patrick Süskind trans. John E. Woods, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

Storia Di Musica #312 - Kaki King, Legs To Make Us Longer, 2004
Neanderthal stupisce per la dolcezza, All The Landslides Birds Have Seen Since The Beginning Of The World è misteriosa e quasi gotica, fa impressione la sua capacità di creare emozioni con la tecnica e il suono.
