Look To The Future Now, It's Only Just Begun (Aubrey/OMC)
So I wrote a fanfic where Bi!Aubrey slowly falls in love with one of Brennan's new interns, based on this prompt list by @creativepromptsforwriting. It's fluffy and Christmassy and gay and I'm so proud of myself that I finished it in time! The first chapters are rather short, but give the boys the time to get to know each other ;)
Oh yeah, you guys get the scoop, cause I have been uploading the chapters in real time on AO3, so the last two chapters (30 and 31) aren't uploaded there yet ;)
So without further ado: enjoy the story!
--------
Rating: PG-13. It's mostly just fluff, fluff and more fluff
Fandom: Bones
Words: 11,092
Relationships: James Aubrey/Rory Dupont (OMC)
Other Characters: Angela Montenegro, Jack Hodgins, Daisy Wick, Temperance Brennan, Seeley Booth
Other tags: Bi!Aubrey, Christmas fluff, developing relationship, strangers to friends to lovers
TW: Homophobia in part 20. It's noted there again. You can skip the chapter if this is a trigger for you.
Summary: Aubrey didnât realise that borrowing the new internâs scarf would lead to a beautiful friendship. And a huge crush. And maybe even more?
This is the link to the story on AO3, if you'd rather read it there.
Note: the chapters each represent 1 day of the month December :)
1. Baking
âYeah, thatâs great. Iâm on my way.â Booth said into his phone. Aubrey looked at his own phone, not wanting to eavesdrop.
âOkay, Iâll ask him. See you in a bit.â Booth ended his call. âSo, itâs one of the squinternâs birthday and he brought cake for an entire army. Wanna come?â He asked while putting on his jacket.
Aubrey smiled and nodded. âYou know Iâm always in for cake!â
The two agents walked into the Jeffersonian where their friends were chatting and laughing.
âHi Booth, hi Aubrey, want a piece of cake?â Angela greeted them.
âIs that even a question?â Aubrey asked with a grin and everyone who heard him laughed.
âSo, whoâs birthday is it?â Booth asked as Aubrey ate his cake enthusiastically.
âRoryâs.â Hodgins answered.
âHappy birthday, man.â Booth said to the intern. âCheers.â
âThanks, Agent Booth.â
âYeah, happy birthday! Where did you get that cake? Itâs a-ma-zing!â Aubrey said, already taking a second serving.
âI made it myself.â Rory said, clearly proud.
âOh my god, I think youâre my friend now.â Aubrey answered before stuffing his face with even more cake. Everyone laughed.
2. Scarf
Aubrey shuddered and put his hands in the pockets of his jacket. His jacket that was way too light for the early December temperatures. His teeth chattered lightly and he shuddered again.
âAgent Aubrey, please be quiet. I know itâs cold, but I canât concentrate over here.â Rory said, standing over some human remains.
âWhy did we have to be called out of bed to look at this guy? He wonât go anywhere anymore.â Aubrey murmured and Rory snorted. He looked up.
âI have my woolen scarf in my car. Take it, the doorâs unlocked.â He smiled.
âAre you sure?â Aubrey asked.
âYou said yesterday that weâre friends now, so I guess itâs okay as long as you give it back.â Rory grinned.
âYouâre my hero.â Aubrey said and Rory concentrated on the remains again.
Aubrey shuddered one last time as he wrapped the scarf around his neck and buried his nose in the warm wool. This was better.
âMr Dupont, tell me what you know.â Aubrey was shaken out of his warm cocoon by Dr Brennan coming on the scene. He took a deep breath. Time to be professional again.
3. Hot Chocolate
âAre you coming?â Aubrey asked Booth.
âWhere to?â
âThe Jeffersonian. Theyâre selling hot chocolate for charity,â Aubrey answered. âWith marshmallows!â
âYou go, Iâll be there in a minute. Have to do some paperwork first.â
Aubrey looked around in awe. The Jeffersonian was lit up with fairy lights and there was a huge Christmas tree in the income. Christmas music was playing. He recognised Mistletoe by Justin Bieber and sang along under his breath.
âJames, hi!â
Aubrey turned around and was greeted by Angela wearing a Christmas hat.
âHi Angela.â He smiled.
âCome on, Iâll show you the hot chocolate.â
âThatâs the only reason Iâm here to be honest.â Aubrey grinned and Angela rolled her eyes.
âAgent Aubrey. I was expecting you. With my scarf to be honest.â Rory said seriously, his arms crossed.
âOh shit, I totally forgot about it. Iâm sorry.â Aubrey said carefully. Rory uncrossed his arms and hit Aubreyâs shoulder playfully.
"I'm only teasing you." Rory grinned.
âOh my god, I thought you were really angry with me.â Aubrey murmured and Rory laughed.
âHere, have a white hot chocolate with marshmallows. Itâs my favourite and youâll get warm without my scarf.â Rory winked.
Aubrey didn't let him ask it twice.
4. Starry night
Aubrey was happy he got his warm winter jacket this time when they called him out of his bed to go to a crime scene again. When he walked up to the scene, he saw that Dr Brennan and one of the interns had already arrived.
âGood evening, Agent Aubrey. The uniforms are over there to give you everything they know.â Dr Brennan said.
âGood evening Dr Brennan.â Aubrey smiled.
âAnd me?â Rory asked and Aubrey hit his forehead.
âIâm so sorry, if I had known it was your turn, I wouldâve brought your scarf.â Aubrey said carefully.
âDonât worry, it was supposed to be Wendallâs turn, but heâs out with the flu.â Rory smiled. Aubrey sighed, relieved.
âIâll let you work!â
The crime scene was cleared pretty quickly. Everyone was already gone. It was just Rory and Aubrey, who were putting the last things away and some uniforms in the background.
âI see youâre dressed properly now.â Rory teased Aubrey and Aubrey laughed.
âYeah. I guess the cold makes the people violent. I had to be prepared this time.â
There was a quiet moment, just them working around each other.
âYou know, the most amazing thing about being this far out of the city, is the stars at night. Look up.â Rory said, leaning against the car. Aubrey leaned against the car as well and looked at the sky.
âWow. This is not something you see every day.â Aubrey whispered and he smiled.
âI guess that is the star that the Wise Men followed to see baby Jesus.â Rory said, showing the pole star.
âYou religious?â Aubrey asked, looking at Rory instead of the sky.
âNot really. I was baptised and I did go to a catholic primary school, so I know the most important stories. I just love Christmas.â Rory answered, also looking at Aubrey now. âWhat about you?â
âI was brought up Jewish, but Iâm not really practicing.â
âI should go now. Tomorrow will be there quickly.â Rory said after another five minutes of staring at the sky.
âYouâre right. See you later. Get home safe.â
Aubrey got into his car with a smile.
5. Snowman
âUncle Aubrey! Are you coming to the light festival with us?â Christine asked enthusiastically.
âOf course, I wouldnât want to miss it for the world! Especially when I can come with the mini-Booths.â Aubrey grinned and Christine hugged him shortly. Dr Brennan smiled at him.
âCome on Christine. You have to dress up warm, it is freezing outside.â She said. Christine ran to her room without a word.
âThanks for having me.â Aubrey said.
âDonât worry. You know youâre like family to us.â Dr Brennan smiled, putting her hand on Aubreyâs shoulder.
âIâm ready!â Christine said, buried in her scarf and hat.
***
âWow, this is amazing.â Aubrey said, looking around in awe. The lights were always his favourite part of this time of year.
âUncle Aubrey, look at that snowman! Itâs huge!â Christine said. She took his hand in hers and pulled him to the lit up snowman enthusiastically. Aubrey laughed.
âAah, Agent Aubrey.â he heard next to him and he turned around.
âMr Dupont, nice to see you.â Aubrey said as seriously as possible when he saw it was Rory. âHow are you doing on this fine evening?â
âWell, Iâm cold to be honest. Cause someone still has got my woolen scarf.â Rory said accusingly.
âI know, Iâm so sorry!â Aubrey said. âIâll just bring it to the Jeffersonian next time I have to be there.â He said.
âIâm teasing you, James. Iâm okay. Just here enjoying the festival with some friends. What about you?â He asked.
âIâm here with Brennan and Booth and the kids.â Aubrey smiled.
âAwe, is that Christine? She is a-dore-able.â Rory awed.
âHi, who are you?â Christine asked.
âIâm Rory. Iâm a friend of your mumâs and of uncle Aubrey.â Rory said, kneeling to be at the same height as Christine.
âOkay.â Christine said and she put all her attention back to the snowman. Rory laughed.
âHi Mr Dupont.â Dr Brennan said.
âHi Dr Brennan. Your daughter looks so much like you, itâs amazing.â Rory said.
âYes, she does.â Booth said lovingly.
âRory? Are you coming?â A girl asked.
âIâm going back to my friends. Have a good night!â He said, looking mainly at Aubrey. âSee you next week in the lab, Dr Brennan.â
âEnjoy your night, Mr Dupont.â Dr Brennan answered.
Aubrey smiled.
6. Music:
Aubrey sighed and he shut down his laptop. He was the last one in the Hoover building and everything outside of his office was dark. He dimmed the light in his office and looked out of the window. He was still in awe of all the lights outside. In his mind, he even heard people laughing and the Christmas music that was doubtlessy playing in the streets.
He smiled and started to gather all his stuff. Aubrey laughed when he saw Roryâs scarf.
âMaybe I can take it to the Jeffersonian when I go tomorrow.â He said to himself and he nodded.
He put his nose in the scarf and smiled. Rory. Aubrey really liked him. Rory could be a savage sometimes, but he was always nice. He also didnât look bad. Maybe a little crush?
âI can live with a little work crush.â Aubrey said to himself and he put the scarf back in his desk. Time to go home.
7. Snowflakes:
Rory blew in his hands before rubbing them together.
âYou should really get a pair of gloves, you know?â Sasha teased him. Roryâs roommate had convinced him to go to the park with her. The park was full of those fairy lights that were all over the city and the first snow of the year was falling out of the sky. Rory had to admit: he liked the snow.
âYeah, I know.â Rory rolled his eyes and shoved her playfully. âAnd that colleague of mineâs still got my scarf. Iâm freezing.â
âYeah, that colleague. That was the guy we saw at the light festival two days ago, right?â Sasha smirked. Rory rolled his eyes again.
âSasha, heâs literally just a colleague. The light festival was the first time I saw him outside of work. And he was there with my mentor and her husband.â
âYeah, but heâs cute. Donât you tell me heâs not cute.â Sasha pushed. Rory didnât answer immediately. He had to admit: Aubrey was cute.
âOkay, yeah, heâs cute.â Rory said, trying to let Sasha shut her mouth, but she squealed.
âI totally ship it!â
Rory couldnât deny he wouldnât mind if Aubrey showed up here in the park. But he mostly wanted his scarf back if he was completely honest.
8. Fluffy socks:
Aubrey looked at the scarf on his desk. He didnât need to go to the Jeffersonian today, but he didnât want to keep Rory waiting for his scarf. Just stopping at the Jeffersonian on the way home wouldnât be that bad, so he decided he would.
The Jeffersonian was unusually quiet. He saw his friends on the platform though.
âHello Agent Aubrey. What are you doing here?â Dr Brennan asked.
âI wanted to give Rory his scarf back. Iâve had it for a week now.â
âRory didnât have to work today. I think heâs home.â Hodgins answered.
âIs it possible to give me his address?â Aubrey asked.
âIâm sure he wouldnât mind. Come along.â Angela answered and Aubrey smiled.
***
He was lucky: Rory did live only one block away from him, so heâd parked in front of his own apartment and walked the little distance to Roryâs. He knocked on the door. He was insecure, really didnât know how Rory would react. He didnât have to wait long, though. Rory opened the door and looked at him in surprise.
âIâm here with your scarf.â Aubrey said with a shy smile.
âHow did you know where I live?â Rory asked, still surprised.
âIâm an FBI Agent, Rory.â Aubrey answered with a bit more confidence. Rory raised an eyebrow.
âAngela gave me your address.â Aubrey grinned and Rory laughed.
âI just baked some cookies and was about to watch a Christmas movie. Wanna come in?â Rory asked.
âIf Iâm not intruding?â Aubrey asked.
âOf course not. My roommate is out of town, so Iâm home alone. Come in and get comfy on the sofa.â Rory held the door open. âIâm taking some snacks and Iâll be right with you.â he winked.
Aubrey snooped around in the living room. He couldnât help himself. He smiled looking at all the pictures. There was even one of Rory and his friends at a gay pride.
âYeah, out and proud here.â Rory said when he saw Aubrey looking at the picture. He put down all the snacks on the table.
âThatâs a really cool picture.â Aubrey answered. âI wish I was that out and proud.â
âYou what?â Rory asked, surprised. Aubrey laughed.
âIâm bi, just not really out. Not that I desperately want to stay in the closet, but no one asked before. And Iâve only been with one woman since I arrived in Washington.â He explained.
âThanks for telling me.â Rory smiled and Aubrey smiled back.
âCome on, letâs watch Love, Actually. Take your shoes off and put these fluffy socks on. Itâs a must.â Rory said while getting comfortable on the sofa.
âIâm okay with that.â Aubrey laughed and he got comfortable next to him before sneaking a cookie in his mouth.
9. Candles:
âSeriously, Angela. That new restaurant near my apartment looks so freaking good! Itâs mostly Western European dishes and I want to try it so bad.â
âMaybe we should go together. See it as a sorry for keeping your scarf for so long.â
***
Rory still remembered Aubrey asking him to dinner and he didnât really know what to think about it. He didnât think it was a real date. More like two friends going out. But he was still looking forward to it.
He had been waiting for only five minutes before Aubrey showed up. Wearing a dark blue shirt and a bomber jacket. He looked amazing.
âHi Aubrey. Thank you for taking me. Iâve been meaning to come since they opened.â Rory said as Aubrey sat down.
âPlease, call me James now weâre not at work.â Aubrey grinned and Rory made a mental note about it.
âWell, James, letâs get something to eat.â Rory grinned. âI already know what Iâm getting.â
âTell me.â
âBĆuf bourguignon. Thatâs a beef stew, made with wine. Itâs amazing.â Rory answered.
âWell, Iâm taking the same.â Aubrey said with a satisfying smile.
They both ordered their food and took the time to look around. Most of the tables were occupied by couples, most of them holding hands or looking at each other with love in their eyes. It was only then that Rory realised there were candles on their table as well.
âWell, the candles surely make it romantic.â Rory mentioned.
âYeah, I didnât really think it through when I asked you to come. It seems the restaurant is a go to spot for couples and dates.â Aubrey answered, laughing.
The waiter brought them their food and they said their thanks.
âWell, enjoy your food, boyfriend.â Aubrey grinned and Rory laughed.
âBon appetit!â
Rory had an amazing night out with Aubrey. They talked about nothing and everything at once and Rory was sure he had found a true friend.
10. Ornaments
*Hiya James! You free tonight? My roommate is still out of town and Iâve got a new video game ;) Also: the cookies I made are getting bad if no oneâs gonna eat them. Wanna come over?*
Aubrey smiled when he got that message from Rory. Of course heâd go to his. He really liked the guy and then he didnât have to be alone in his cold apartment.
*There at 7?*
*Your reservation for 7 is accepted.*
Aubrey laughed and shook his head. Idiot.
***
âOh my god, you put up your Christmas tree.â Aubrey said, excited.
âYeah, Sasha and I love Christmas, so I wanted to surprise her when she comes home tomorrow.â Rory explained.
âI love these ornaments. Did you make them yourself?â Aubrey asked, looking at the tree with the biggest interest.
âMy siblings did. And since I canât see them for Christmas this year, I thought it would be nice to have those in the tree.â
âWhy canât you see your siblings?â Aubrey asked, putting his jacket over a chair before sitting down on the couch.
âMy family moved to Europe when Iâd graduated high school.â Rory told him.
âReally? Why?â Aubrey asked, interested.
âMy dad is Belgian. We went to Belgium every year in summer to visit family and my parents had wanted to move there for a long time.â Rory smiled. âThereâs my last name from: Dupont. Itâs French.â
âOh my god, do you speak French then?â
âNot really. My dad is from the Dutch part of Belgium. We all grew up bilingual. Itâs pretty cool.â Rory explained. âYeah, I know, French last name, Dutch part. Belgium is complicated.â
âItâs a bummer youâre not seeing your family for Christmas, though.â Aubrey said.
âYeah, but we skype as much as we can, so Iâm okay.â Rory told him.
âThatâs nice.â
âSo, what is that video game you got?â Aubrey asked after a short silence. âIâm gonna destroy you, no matter what.â
Rory laughed.
âChallenge accepted.â
11. Family:
âHey, Rory, you okay?â Rory heard through the speaker of his phone.
âHey James. Something wrong?â Rory asked.
âNo, just saw that thereâs a food truck festival in the park near our apartments. Wanna join me?â Aubrey asked.
âAlready putting my jacket on.â Rory answered with a grin.
***
âSo, you say youâve never tried tacos?â Aubrey asked, almost shocked. They were walking to the park together.
âNo, we never ate it at home, and just never had the need to try it.â Rory confessed. âMy dad isnât the type for international kitchen, so we didnât really try anything new all our livesâ
âOh, poor you. Iâm having tacos and you will try one. With me, it was my dad who made the tacoâs every Friday nightâŠâ Suddenly, the smile on Aubreyâs face disappeared.
âOh, James, Iâm sorry, did I say something wrong?â Rory asked, concerned.
âNo, itâs alright.â Aubrey forced the smile on his face again and walked a little bit faster.
âHey, James, stop for a minute.â Rory took Aubreyâs arm with a light grip. Aubrey wasnât looking at him.
âItâs okay if you donât want to tell me, but I want you to know that I see you as a real friend, even if we havenât known each other for a long time. Iâm here for you if somethingâs wrong.â
There was a short silence. Rory could feel Aubrey tense up.
âMy dad was a criminal. He stole a lot of money from a lot of people and left my mum and me with nothing. He left my mum without any money to take care of me. I was 14.â Aubrey told, still not looking at Rory. âIt just feels wrong to have good memories regarding him.â
âAs far as I hear, heâs been a real dad for a short time. It is okay to have good memories from that time. Youâre not a bad person for that.â
Aubrey finally looked up, tears welling up in his eyes.
âCan I give you a hug?â Rory asked. Aubrey nodded.
âIâd like that.â
Rory took Aubrey in his arms for a tight, comforting hug.
âCome on, letâs go eat some tacos.â Rory nudged Aubreyâs shoulder. âMy treat.â
âIâd like that, too.â
12. Traditions
âOkay, guys, listen up.â Rory said to all of his friends at the Jeffersonian. The latest case was solved and they were celebrating it. âSince I canât see my actual family this year, I want to share one of our traditions with you, my new family.â
âOh Rory, shut up, youâre going to make me cry.â Angela answered. A synced âAweâ filled the room.
âSo itâs food related.â Rory said.
âAre you sure you want Aubrey here then? Heâll eat everything before we all have the chance to try it.â Booth remarked and everyone laughed at Aubreyâs innocent face.
âI have enough for the entire Jeffersonian Institute, so weâll be okay.â Rory winked, looking Aubrey in the eyes.
âThe thing we always eat on Christmas Eve is cheese fondue. So I brought everything we need to enjoy cheese fondue with all of you.â Rory told everyone.
âYou are the real MVP, Rory.â Aubrey said.
âYeah, Iâm sure I am.â Rory answered, shoving Aubreyâs shoulder. âCome on, letâs eat.â
âYou donât have to tell me twice.â Aubrey answered.
***
Rory looked around him for a moment, taking in everyone enjoying the cheese fondue. He felt a warmth in his chest and happy tears welling up in his eyes, but he swallowed the tears before they could fall.
âThis means a lot to you, doesnât it?â Aubrey asked him.
Rory nodded.
âWhen my parents had moved, I never thought I could experience something like this again.â Rory admitted. âIt feels amazing to be here with all of you.â
Aubrey bumped his knee against Roryâs and smiled at him.
13. Christmas tree
Rory didnât know how he ended up in Aubreyâs apartment, but they were drinking beer and laughing when suddenly Rory realised something.
âYou donât have a Christmas tree?â Rory asked.
âNo, I donât. Iâm here on my own, I donât need a Christmas tree.â Aubrey shrugged.
âJames Aubrey, everyone needs a Christmas Tree. Letâs go, weâre getting one right now.â
âButâŠâ
âAnd you can use Sasha and Iâs ornaments weâre not using for ours right now.â Rory interrupted Aubrey when he realised what he was going to say.
âOkay, but on one condition: Iâm buying a fake one. I donât want to be swiping needles every minute of the day.â
âMood killer.â Rory mumbled. âBut okay, thatâs a deal.â
***
On the way to the Christmas shop, the boys stopped at Roryâs apartment to get the ornaments and the lights and one hour later they were back at Aubreyâs.
âNow we just need Christmas music and another beer and we can begin decorating the tree.â Rory said enthusiastically and Aubrey laughed.
âAlready getting the beer part, you take care of the music.â
***
âYou know, the words for âto decorateâ and âto flirt with someoneâ are the same in Dutch: versieren. And we were always joking at home that we were âversierenâ someone, and wrap them in lights.â Rory told Aubrey and he did just that.
âYouâre an idiot, you know that?â Aubrey laughed as he tried to free himself. Rory smiled affectionately when Aubrey tried to hide the blush on his cheeks.
14. Books:
Rory and Aubrey were in The Founding Fathers with a group of their friends. They were talking about their favorite Christmas presents.
âIâm always happy when I get a book to be honest. I know, lameâ Daisy told everyone.
âThatâs not lame! I love books! What do you like to read?â Rory asked her.
âI read a lot of romance novels. I live for those clichĂ© man and woman run into each other and fall in love at first sight stories.â Daisy swooned and everyone laughed.
âWhat about you, Rory?â Angela asked.
âI love to read queer books, even if they're young adult - for obvious reasons.â Rory said, showing the âgay handâ and everyone laughed. âBut I also love the classics and books I believe will be classics in a couple of years.â
âWhat do you mean?â Daisy asked.
âDo you know The Midnight Library by Matt Haig? That book is a-ma-zing. I read it in one afternoon because I couldnât stop reading. I really believe that book will be a classic in a decade or two.â
âI havenât read The Midnight Library yet, but I've heard a lot of good things about it. I really love fantasy books and sci-fi.â Aubrey joined the conversation.
âIâm a sucker for detective stories. Like Iâm not in it all day.â Angela said and everyone laughed.
âLike The Da Vinci Code and stuff like that?â Daisy asked.
âYeah, Iâm basic.â Angela said and everyone laughed again.
Both Aubrey and Rory enjoyed being around their friends. Nights like this were amazing.
15. Coming home
Aubrey opened the door to his apartment and smiled as he saw the Christmas Tree in the corner of his living room. He threw his jacket over the couch, took off his tie and lit up the lights in the tree.
Rory had been right: he really did need a Christmas tree. It brought such a nice atmosphere in his apartment. He even put on some Christmas music on his tv.
***
He had changed into something comfortable, put on some fluffy socks and made a cup of hot chocolate. He took a picture of the scene and sent it to Rory.
*Youâre infecting me with all your Christmas enthusiasm.*
*You know you love it.*
*I really do*
*Iâm watching The Christmas Setup tonight. You should, too. Itâs a clichĂ© Christmas movie, but make it gay. Itâs amazing.*
*Why am I really thinking about doing exactly that*
*Like I said, because you know you love it*
Aubrey knew Rory was right and he shook his head.
*Where can I watch that movie?*
*Yeesss, I knew you would! Amazon Prime.*
That message was soon followed by another one.
*Little fact of the day: the two main characters of that movie are married in real life and I live for this shit.*
Aubrey laughed. Yeah, he would watch the movie.
*Okay, Iâm watching it!*
*Yeeessss*
Aubrey wouldnât admit it, but he was crying at the end of the movie. And he really wanted to watch it again, so he did just that.
16. Sweets
I know this was supposed to be about candy, and I know Sweets didnât die in December, but shush
*Hey Rory. Can I come over? Iâm not feeling great and I donât really want to be alone.*
*Yeah, of course. Iâm home.*
Aubrey sighed in relief. He immediately went over.
âHey, come here.â Rory said as he opened the door and he embraced Aubrey. Aubrey wrapped his arms around Roryâs middle and answered the hug.
âThanks, I needed that.â Aubrey admitted.
âCome in, Iâm making spaghetti as comfort food and you can tell me whatâs bothering you if you want.â Rory said.
âThanks, means a lot.â Aubrey said.
***
They both sat on the couch with a big bowl of spaghetti.
âHave you ever heard about Dr Sweets?â Aubrey asked. Rory nodded.
âDaisy told me about him. Itâs awful what happened to him.â Rory said.
âWell, he died 3 years ago today.â Aubrey began. He took a bite of his spaghetti and put it on the side for a moment.
âHe was a really, really good friend of Booth and Dr Brennan. I was the one first on the scene. I put my jacket under his head and called Booth.â Aubrey told Rory. âAnd I saw him die in front of me, in Boothâs and Dr Brennanâs arms.â
Rory took Aubreyâs hand in his and pinched it.
âThat mustâve been awful.â Rory whispered.
âSo Iâm a bit out of it today.â Aubrey confessed.
âThatâs okay. What do you want to do? Do you want to watch a comfort movie? Do you want food? Do you want a drink?â Rory asked.
âIâd love to watch Star Wars together if thatâs okay with you?â He asked.
âOf course thatâs okay. Iâll give you a blanket and weâll watch Star Wars.â Rory answered.
âThank you.â Aubrey whispered.
Did I cry writing this? Maybe.
17. Miracle:
Rory was helping Aubrey set up a new closet when his phone suddenly rang.
âItâs my mum!â Rory said excitingly. It was so cute, Aubrey couldnât help but laugh.
âHi mum!â Rory said into the camera of his phone.
âHi, love. You are not in your apartment?â His mum said. Rory rolled with his eyes and Aubrey laughed.
âOh my god, are you there with a boy? Itâs a miracle! My boyâs finally found love!â Roryâs mum squealed. Aubrey laughed even harder now.
âMum, weâre just friends! Iâm helping him set up a closet he bought.â Rory explained. âLook, Iâll call you when Iâm back in my apartment, if youâre not in bed yet.â
âItâs Saturday, love. We wonât be in bed for a long time.â Roryâs mother winked.
âMum, youâre not 21 anymore.â Rory laughed and his mum laughed too.
âOkay, Iâll hear you later. I love you.â
âI love you too.â Rory said affectionately. âGive dad, Amber and Michael a kiss from me.â
âI will. Bye!â
âOh my god, your mum is amazing.â Aubrey laughed.
âYeah, she is. And she is that romantic soul every family has. She just really wants me to find someone.â Rory explained.
âYouâll get someone eventually.â Aubrey said.
âYeah, I know.â Rory forced a smile on his face. This was not a story to tell right now.
18. Cookies
*Hey, Rory. You seemed a bit distracted this morning. You okay?*
Rory looked at his phone and a small smile appeared on his face. Aubrey did really know him.
*Hi James. Yeah, I just miss my family, a lot. Talked to my family yesterday on Skype when I went home.*
Rory couldnât help but feel disappointed when James didnât answer anymore. He shrugged and put on the tv. Some Netflix would maybe help him get distracted from his feelings.
***
Rory looked confused at his door when someone knocked on it almost one hour later. Only after the second knock, he stood up and went to open the door. It was Aubrey.
âHey, I made you some cookies.â Aubrey said carefully.
âWhat?â Rory asked.
âI mean, thatâs what makes me happy, so I thoughtâŠâ
It was only then Rory realized what Aubrey had done.
âOh, come on in. Iâm sorry I reacted so shortly.â Rory said. He took the cookies and put them down as Aubrey threw his jacket over a chair.
âHey, itâs not cause Iâm not close with my family, that I donât understand you feeling homesick.â Aubrey said sweetly. Rory looked at him, tears clearly in his eyes.
âCan I have a hug?â he asked.
âOf course, come âere.â Aubrey said and he wrapped his arms around Roryâs shoulders. Rory was a little bit smaller than Aubrey and he buried his nose in Aubreyâs neck while wrapping his arms around Aubreyâs waist.
They stood like this for quite a while, until Rory felt his heartbeat slow down.
âThank you, I needed that.â He said, breaking the hug.
Aubrey took Roryâs shoulders and looked him in the eye with a comforting smile.
âYouâre welcome. Now I want to watch your comfort movie and eat cookies.â
âAre you really watching Mary Poppins with me?â Rory asked with a raised eyebrow.
âYou watched Star Wars with me.â
âOkay, but I love Star Wars.â
âWho told you I donât love Mary Poppins?â Aubrey asked with a wink.
âCan I sing along to the songs?â Rory asked hopefully.
âOnly if Iâm allowed to sing with you.â Aubrey answered and a smile appeared on Roryâs face.
âThanks, again. This means a lot.â
19. Apron:
âYouâre early.â Aubrey said as he opened his door and he let Rory come inside.
âOkay, but your apron is amazing.â Rory laughed.
Aubrey looked at him dryly, but the apron that said âMr Good Lookinâ Is Cookinââ made it all even funnier. Rory took his phone and shot a picture.
âIf you ever show someone that picture, youâre dead.â Aubrey said, but Rory was still laughing.
âWhat are you even making? I thought this was just a casual video playing night?â Rory asked when heâd finally stopped laughing. âI brought beer.â
âWell, Iâm making my famous nachos with all the toppings and I really donât want the marinade of the chicken stain my shirt. Itâs a pain to get it out.â
âLook at you, mister independent.â Rory teased and he shoved his shoulder.
âI wonât say anything to that.â Aubrey answered as he went back to the kitchen and Rory laughed again.
***
âOkay, you were right. These nachos are a-ma-zing. Oh my god.â Rory said, mouth full.
âDonât talk with your mouth full, little man.â Aubrey teased. Rory raised his eyebrow, but he swallowed his food before answering.
âLook at whoâs talking.â
They ended up having an entire discussion about who had the best manners and Aubrey had the time of his life. He was just so happy heâd found a real friend again. A friend who was there for him and didnât expect anything in return, a friend who he could laugh with, a friend he could drink a beer with or share his favorite food with. Just a best friend like he saw in movies and in books.
They had seen each other almost every day outside of work for the last 10 days, but he looked forward to spending even more time with Rory and getting to know him even better. And if he was honest? He wouldnât mind getting to know Rory in a more intimate way. Aubrey smiled to himself. Maybe heâd get the chance some day.
20. Secrets
tw: Homophobia. You can skip this chapter if it is triggering.
âHey, I was just randomly thinking about it yesterday, but if youâre so close with your family, why did you decide to stay in DC?â Aubrey asked Rory when they were hanging out at his place that night. Aubrey had meant the question as something innocent, but he immediately saw and felt Rory tense up.
âIâm sorry, you donât have to tell me if you donât want to.â Aubrey smiled comfortingly.
âItâs just⊠Itâs not a nice story.â Rory admitted. He looked at his hands. âAre you okay with me telling something⊠not so fun?â
âUh⊠Yeah, Iâm certainly okay with that, but are you okay with it?â Aubrey asked. Rory nodded and crossed his arms in front of his body.
âI told you we went to Belgium every summer when I was a child, right?â Rory asked and Aubrey nodded.
âSomething happened there, the summer after Iâd graduated high school.â Rory started to tell Aubrey. âI had been out for quite a while, but didnât really know any queer people. My parents, amazing as they are, convinced me to go to the Antwerp Pride. It had been an amazing day. I met so many people who just kind of adopted me into the community. I finally felt like I belonged somewhere.â
It sounded like an amazing memory, but the pain was visible on Roryâs face. Aubrey wanted to take Roryâs hand, but he didnât know if that was such a good idea. He decided to just listen.
âIt was about 10pm and I was walking to the train station with two other guys Iâd met that day. One of them was in drag and the other guy and I had painted rainbows on our cheeks and had glitter all over ourselves from the party.â
Aubrey already felt where the story was going and he didnât like it one bit. He already felt anger build up, but he had to stay calm. For Rory.
âWe saw a group of guys coming our way. They were in a group of six or seven. Those big, muscled, toxic masculinity on legs guys. We didnât see them right away, we were still in the high from the party.â Rory took a deep breath and looked Aubrey in the eyes. The tears were ready to spill.
âCan I take your hand?â Aubrey whispered. Rory nodded. He couldnât help it. He needed to comfort Rory.
âBy the time we heard them shouting profanities at us, they were already too close. We tried to just get to the other side of the road, but they closed in on us andâŠâ Rory held his breath and Aubrey pinched his hand.
âItâs okay, you donât have to tell me every detail. I know itâs hard.â Aubrey said with a comforting smile.
âYou know, Belgium is supposed to be one of the safest countries on earth for queer people. They were the second country in the world the accept same sex marriage, there are two pride parades every year, there are national organisations for queer people,...â Rory told Aubrey. âBut that night was the worst night of my life. I remember not feeling the pain, not until I was in the hospital. Iâve never felt safe again, walking in the dark in Belgium. Thatâs the main reason I stayed here in the US. And thatâs also one of the main reasons Iâve never had a serious boyfriend yet.â
âDid you go to the police?â Aubrey dared to ask.
Rory nodded.
âYeah, we went together. They told us they would check the CCTV, but they said it would be almost impossible to find the guys. And as far as I know, they never did.â
There was a painful silence between them. Aubrey just tried to calm himself down.
âIâm sorry I dropped this on you.â
âDonât be. Thank you for trusting me.â Aubrey told him and he pinched his hand. âIâm proud of you.â
Rory relaxed.
âYou want to play video games now? I really need something not serious for the rest of the night.â
âOf course! You want me to let you win?â Aubrey teased.
âYou wish, Iâll destroy you no matter what.â Rory said, challenging.
Aubrey smiled and relaxed too, seeing Rory challenging him. Heâd be angry another time, now letâs get Rory smiling.
21. Reunions:
âJames? Can I ask you something?â Rory looked at him with begging eyes.
âI donât know. I donât trust you right now.â Aubrey said, the distrust hearable in his voice. Rory seemed to want something, and he wasn't sure he wanted to know what exactly.
âUhmâŠâ Rory said.
âJust ask me, Mr Dupont.â Aubrey grinned.
âWell, thereâs a reunion from my high school tonight.â Rory began.
âAnd?â Aubrey asked, still not trusting what Rory wanted to ask.
âA lot of my classmates are married, have kids, already have jobs⊠As far as I know, Iâm the only single one...â Rory said. âAnd I thought: can you pretend to be my boyfriend for the night?â He begged.
Aubrey shook his head and sighed.
âTell me more.â Aubrey answered. Rory cheered.
âI didnât say yes yet, Mr Dupont.â
***
But Aubrey had said yes. He knew Rory really well, so one evening of playing his boyfriend would be okay. Right?
They walked into the sporthall of Roryâs old highschool hand in hand. Aubrey couldnât say he really minded. Rory always grounded him.
âMr Dupont, itâs amazing to see you.â An older, black woman stopped them. The smile on Roryâs face already showed Aubrey what he wanted to know: he looked up to her.
âMs Frankie, likewise.â Rory said enthusiastically and he let Aubreyâs hand go to give the woman a hug.
âJames, this is Ms Frankie, my biology, chemistry and English teacher. Ms Frankie, this is James, my boyfriend.â
âNice to meet you, maâam.â Aubrey said with a charming smile.
âOoh, you found yourself a good one, I see.â Ms Frankie said. âTell me, what are you doing now?â
âIâm doing a forensic anthropology internship at the Jeffersonian, with Dr Temperance Brennan.â Rory said proudly.
âWow, your dream did come true then.â Ms Frankie said proudly. Aubrey couldnât help but smile at the exchange.
âAnd how did you two meet?â Ms Frankie asked.
âIâm with the FBI, maâam. We work together on cases sometimes.â Aubrey answered.
âOh, yeah, a really good one.â Ms Frankie winked and she touched Aubreyâs shoulder quickly. âYour old classmates are at table 4. Go show your boyfriend off.â She winked. Both boys started laughing when she was gone.
âShe seems like an amazing teacher.â Aubrey said.
âYeah, she certainly was my favorite. Sheâs gay, btw. She married a woman.â Rory told him.
âAaah, I see why she was your favorite.â Aubrey winked.
âYeah, that was a big part of it.â Rory admitted and they walked to the table with Roryâs old friends.
***
When Aubrey came home that night, he couldnât stop thinking about Roryâs hand in his, Roryâs hand on his arm, Rory kissing his cheek, how his own hand had felt on the small part of Rory's back⊠It hadnât been necessary, but it did feel good. Aubrey smiled as he sat down on the couch. He really hadnât want Rory to stop touching him. Rory. Had he felt the same? Was that why Rory had kissed his cheek? Or was it just for show?
Aubrey made a decision: he would ask Rory out on a date. Tomorrow. He just hoped he wouldnât make a fool of himself.
22. Joy
Aubrey was panicking. They had gotten a case today and Rory was working, but it seemed like Rory was avoiding him as much as he could.
Had he done something wrong? Was he too obvious about liking to be close to him? Maybe Rory hated him now.
Yeah, Aubrey was panicking.
So when the day was almost over, he needed to know. He took his jacket and walked the one block to Roryâs apartment.
Aubrey was already happy Rory didnât throw the door in his face.
âHey.â Aubrey said carefully. Rory scratched his neck.
âHey, come in.â Rory said.
Aubrey didnât take his jacket off, like he did otherwise.
âRory, whatâs wrong? Did I do something wrong? Youâve been ignoring me all day and Iâve been eating myself up about it.â
Roryâs eyes went big.
âOh my god, did I give you that idea? Iâm so sorry.â He immediately answered. âI was just embarrassed.â
âEmbarrassed?â Aubrey asked.
The short silence that followed was heavy.
âI was just thinking⊠After yesterday,â Rory admitted. âI really didnât mind being that close to you and⊠Maybe we could go on a real date together?â He asked.
An enormous weight was lifted from Aubreyâs shoulders. He took a deep breath before answering.
âYes, Rory, Iâd love to go on a real date with you.â
âReally?â
âYeah, but never do that to me again. The ignoring thing.â Aubrey told him.
âIâm sorry,â Rory said again. "I just thought you'd hate me after the hand holding and the kissing. We hadn't spoken about any of that."
âOh, Rory, I couldn't hate you, even if I wanted to. Come âere.â Aubrey said and he pulled Rory in a hug.
âOkay, whatâs the idea for the date?â Aubrey asked after they broke it up.
âIâm picking you up after work. Wear something warm.â Rory said enthusiastically and Aubrey laughed.
âDeal.â
23. Sleigh ride
Aubrey was so excited for his date with Rory. It had been a long time since he went on a date and the fact that Rory knew him this well, made it even more exciting.
Aubrey was ready ten minutes before they had agreed on meeting up. Luckily for him, the knocks on his front door started before he could sit down and freak out.
âHi, Iâm sorry Iâm early.â Rory smiled, the nervousness hearable in his voice.
âYou look really good.â Aubrey smiled. Rory was dressed in a fluffy coat, a hat that was actually way too big and the scarf. But even with all the winter clothes, he could still see the blush on Roryâs cheeks.
âThank you. You too.â Rory answered and Aubrey couldnât help but feel a bit of butterflies in his stomach.
âWhere are we going?â
***
Rory drove both of them to a park with a couple of hills. The grass was covered in snow and a lot of people brought their sleighs to ride from those hills.
âNo, are we sleighing?â Aubrey asked enthusiastically.
âThat was the plan. You okay with that?â Rory asked.
âI havenât been on a sleigh since I was a child, but Iâd love to.â Aubrey smiled. Rory took his hand and pulled him to the top of the hill where they rented a sleigh. Rory sat down at the front, leaving enough space for Aubrey to sit behind him. Aubrey smiled and took the hint. There was enough space for him to sit at the end and hold onto the sleigh itself, but Aubrey wrapped his arms around Roryâs middle and put his head on Roryâs shoulder. He felt Rory smile.
âReady?â Rory asked.
âReady.â Aubrey answered.
***
âThank you for tonight.â Aubrey said when Rory dropped him off at his apartment. He couldnât hide his smile even if heâd want to. âIt was the best date I had in a very long time.â
Rory just smiled widely with a blush on his cheek.
âI had a very good time, too.â
The boys just looked at each other for a moment, not really knowing what to say.
âUh, Iâm going home. See you tomorrow?â Rory asked. Aubrey nodded.
âSee you tomorrow.â He answered and he planted his lips shortly on Roryâs cheek, before he could change his mind. Rory blushed and smiled again before leaving Aubrey.
Aubrey went inside his apartment and squealed like a teenage girl. This had been a very good date.
24. Christmas cards:
Aubrey came home after a long day of work. He threw his keys into the bowl next to the front door and looked through his mail. Bills, mostly, but also one red envelope with his name in golden letters. He looked at the return address and smiled. It was from Rory.
Aubrey draped his jacket over a chair and opened the envelope. It was a beautiful diy christmas card and a handwritten letter. He began with the letter.
Hey James,
I donât know how you feel about Christmas cards, but I couldnât help myself. Making and sending Christmas cards to loved ones has been a family tradition for as long as I can remember. And since you became pretty important to me in the last weeks; sending you a Christmas card was kind of a no brainer.
Aubrey smiled when he felt a warmth spread in his chest and stomach. Rory had become pretty important to him, too. Seeing on paper that Rory felt the same made him really happy.
I wanted to write this letter next to the card, because I just didnât want it to be random ;) Christmas cards are just really important to me, and I hope I can send a bit of that warmth and festiveness to you.
Lots of love,
Rory
Aubrey smiled widely. He realized he smiled this way because he was really, actually crushing on Rory. Like, hard. But he could live with it.
He opened the Christmas card now, curious about the text in it.
You fill my life with joy
Each moment that we share
Iâm thankful for my time with you
Nothing can compare
I want to make life good for you
In every way I can
Youâve been a true companion
Ever since our friendship began
Thank you for everything, James.
Merry Christmas
Rory
Aubrey didnât know how to explain what he was feeling. He was feeling the butterflies in his stomach, he was feeling so happy, but he also wanted to cry.
He opened a message on his phone, before he could rethink his actions.
*Hey Rory, thank you so much for your Christmas card. It means a lot to me. I canât remember when I last got a card from someone I really cared about. I canât wait until tomorrow to celebrate Christmas with you. See you then.*
He didnât have to wait long until he got an answer.
*Youâre welcome, James. Canât wait either! See you tomorrow.*
Aubrey sighed happily and put the card up on his cupboard, so he could admire it at all times.
25. Wrapping paper:
Aubrey checked himself in the mirror one more time and he nodded. He looked good, even with the ugly christmas sweater they had agreed on wearing. He smiled. He knew he thought he looked good because he was genuinely happy.
Three knocks on the door tore him out of his thoughts. Aubrey took a deep breath and opened the door.
âMerry Christmas!â Rory smiled widely.
âMerry Christmas! Come in.â Aubrey smiled.
***
The two boys were snacking on Christmas cookies and were watching Home Alone on tv, sitting comfortably close to each other.
âSo, I think itâs time for presents.â Rory grinned. He took a present out of the box he brought.
âOoh, Iâm so curious.â Aubrey squealed and Rory laughed.
Aubrey tore the wrapping paper off and a blue book laughed at him. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Aubrey was sure Rory could tell he was happy with the present, seeing his smile.
âYou said youâve never read it, but I think itâs a must-read.â Rory smiled.
âThank you so much, Iâve wanted to read this book for so long!â Aubrey said enthusiastically and he kissed Rory on the cheek. Aubrey smiled when he saw the blush on Roryâs cheeks.
âOkay, my turn now.â Aubrey said and he took one of the presents from under the Christmas tree.
âItâs a book as well, isnât it?â Rory asked with an excited smile.
âJust open it, idiot.â Aubrey answered and he shoved Roryâs shoulder.
It was indeed a book: We Are The Ants by David Hutchinson.
âI havenât read it, but itâs a bit of a mix of what we both like: itâs LGBTQIA+ themed, but itâs also sci-fi. I thought this was something youâd like.â Aubrey smiled.
âThank you so much, James. I canât wait to start reading!â
***
The rest of the night was pretty uneventful. They both gave each other a couple of more little presents (snacks, socks and little trinkets mostly) and just stared into each otherâs eyes at all times. Aubrey had the time of his life.
âThank you for celebrating Christmas with me. You didnât have to do that.â Rory smiled as he put on his jacket to go home.
âNo, thank you! I wouldâve been very lonely if it werenât for you. So thank you.â Aubrey smiled as he walked to the front door to open it for Rory.
âSend me a text when youâre home safe.â Aubrey said.
Rory smiled widely again before kissing Aubrey on the cheek.
âI will.â Rory answered.
And with that, Rory walked back to his apartment with a smile on his face.
26. Wishes:
âSo what are you bringing for the potluck?â Aubrey asked Rory as they were driving to Dr Brennan and Agent Boothâs home. They were celebrating Christmas with the entire Jeffersonian team today.
âI made a huge batch of salsa and guacamole and bought a couple of bags of nachos.â Rory answered. âAnd I made apple cake for dessert. What about you?â
âJust some meaty snacks.â Aubrey answered. âYou know I love myself some meat now and then.â
Rory giggled.
âYou are a child.â Aubrey said before he started laughing as well.
***
Everyone was all over the house. Rory was sitting on the couch, next to Angela; while Aubrey was talking to Hodgins at the other side of the room. Rory couldnât help but look at Aubrey now and then. He was looking really good, in the shirt that made his eyes pop and the vest that made him look really, really handsome.
âHeâs a real cutiepie, isnât he?â Angela teased.
âHmm?â Rory asked, turning his head in the womanâs direction.
âAubrey. You were looking at Aubrey, right?â Angela asked and Rory felt the blood rush to his cheeks.
âWhat? No I wasnât.â Rory denied mumbling
âWell, I certainly hope youâre not looking with lovesick puppy eyes at my husband, Mr Dupont.â Angela teased. That made Rory laugh.
âOkay, maybe I was looking at Aubrey.â Rory admitted with a small smile.
âSo? You two an item?â Angela asked curiously.
âNo, itâs just a stupid crush.â
âAre you sure?â Angela cocked her eyebrow.
âWe went on a date a couple of days ago.â Rory smiled.
âAnd? Tell me everything!â Angela squealed.
âWe went to the park to sleigh down the hill and drank some hot chocolate.â Rory smiled. âI have to admit Iâm having a little bit of a crush. Cause it was an amazing night.â
âYou guys would be so amazing together.â Angela smiled affectionately.
***
âSo, whatâs this thing between you and Rory?â Hodgins asked with a smirk. It wasnât until that moment that Aubrey realized he was probably staring at Rory speaking with Angela and a blush appeared on his cheeks.
âMaybe a little crush?â Aubrey answered.
âI knew it!â Hodgins answered. âI wasnât sure you were into guys, but the chemistry between you two.â
âYeah, Iâm bi.â Aubrey shrugged. âBut is it that obvious?â
âItâs obvious that you mean a lot to each other.â Hodgins admitted. âAnd itâs only like 3 weeks since you met each other, so itâs not rocket science.â he winked.
***
The boys had an amazing night with all the people they loved. And the subtle glances at each other. And the random touches, just because they could.
And when Booth had wished everyone a year full of happiness and love; they both knew that wish could come true.
27. Bonfire
âWow, this is amazing.â Rory awed as he and Aubrey walked into the park. There was a huge bonfire of Christmas trees in the middle of the open space.
âLook at the size of that thing!â Aubrey awed.
âThatâs what he said.â Rory mumbled.
âRory Dupont!â Aubrey said, sounding as offended as he could muster before starting to laugh.
âHey, Rory!â
âIâll be right back.â Rory smiled when he saw one of his high school friends.
Aubrey looked at Rory, his face lit up by the fire. The different hues of yellow and orange dancing on his face. He laughed at something his friend said and Aubreyâs heart skipped a beat. Damn. He had properly fallen for the guy, hadnât he?
He sat down on the grass, close enough to the fire to feel the heat, but far enough to not sit in the large group of people. He looked at his hands and smiled lightly. Just thinking about Rory, thinking about everything theyâd done in the past month. Just thinking about his smile, about his eyes, about the hugs,... Yeah, he was in love with Rory. He looked up, just in time to see Rory walk to him with that beautiful smile on his face.
***
âHave a nice evening.â Rory said before turning around to see Aubrey sitting on the grass. Aubrey was looking at his hands, with a little smile on his face. The fire lit up the right features of his silhouette. Rory stopped in his tracks to just look at Aubrey for a moment and smiled. He suddenly realized that Aubrey was the only one who knew everything about him: from the good memories of high school to the gay bashing he encountered back in Belgium. And he was still here. He still liked to spend almost every day with him after work.
Aubrey looked up and shot him a beautiful smile. Roryâs heart skipped a beat. âFuck Rory, youâre in love with him.â Rory mumbled to himself before going closer.
Rory sat down next to Aubrey and shuddered.
âOoh, the ground is cold.â
âCome on, come a little closer, thatâll warm you up.â Aubrey smiled affectionately and Rory felt the heat come up his cheeks. He didnât answer but just sat down in between Aubreyâs legs and let his back fall against Aubreyâs chest. Aubrey closed his arms around Roryâs middle and put his head on Roryâs shoulder, cheeks almost touching. Rory felt himself relax in Aubreyâs arms.
Yeah, he was in love.
28. Silence
Aubrey just showed up at Roryâs place, the book he got for Christmas in his hands.
âHey, come in.â Rory smiled.
âCan I get a hug?â Aubrey asked when heâd shed off his jacket and put the book on the table.
âOoh, of course, come âere.â Rory smiled affectionately and he pulled Aubrey in his arms. Aubrey took a deep breath and relaxed in the hug when the familiar scent of Rory filled his nostrils.
âNot that I donât like you coming over - on the contrary, but what are you doing here?â Rory asked with a smile, breaking the hug, but not letting Aubrey go completely.
âJust wanted to read The Midnight Library, but Iâd like some company?â Aubrey more asked than said.
âI was about to read the book you got me as well, so come on in.â Rory smiled and hugged him shortly before finally letting him go.
***
They had been sitting next to each other reading for about an hour now and Aubrey had never felt so relaxed before. Aubrey looked at Roryâs face. Rory was concentrating on the text on the pages before him with a little frown on his forehead. Aubrey smiled. Damn, Rory was cute.
His heart skipped a beat again. He couldnât wait to experience way more nights like this, just sitting next to each other in silence, reading or studying or whatever needed to be done. He couldnât wait to experience that with Rory.
But then he should make a move; and Aubrey was not ready to put his friendship with Rory on the line just yet.
29. Snowball fight
I know theyâre going to the park a lot haha shush.
Rory entered his apartment and took a deep breath. Theyâd had a case today and although it was solved quickly; it had been a hard one. It was always difficult when the victim was a kid; and certainly when you knew how much theyâd suffered.
He was about to just put on his pajamas, but his phone showed he had a new message.
*7 pm, Creekside Park. You against me, the snowball fight of the century. May the odds be ever in your favor.*
Rory didnât really want to, but he could use the distraction. And he could spend time with Aubrey instead of crying in his bed until he fell asleep. So he decided to just go with it.
*The game, James Aubrey, is on.* Rory answered with a smile on his face before changing into warm clothes.
***
Two hours later, they were both soaked, but they were also laughing. They were walking back to their apartments, just an inch between their two bodies.
âThanks for that, James.â Rory said with a smile. âThis case was really fucked up and it was a welcome distraction.â
âThatâs exactly what I thought. I really just wanted to do something silly for once.â Aubrey smiled and shoved Rory with his shoulder.
âThanks again. I havenât had so much fun in years.â Rory laughed.
They stopped in front of Roryâs apartment building, looking in each otherâs eyes. They were standing so close that Rory could see the color differences in Aubreyâs eyes. Roryâs laugh disappeared and his eyes darted to Aubreyâs lips for a moment. Rory leaned in, but Aubrey averted his face and kissed Rory on the cheek. The disappointment made a hard knot in Roryâs stomach.
âWhatâs wrong?â Rory asked carefully.
âCan I come in to talk about it?â Aubrey asked and Rory nodded, opening his front door and walking to his apartment.
***
Rory had given Aubrey some tracksuit bottoms and an oversized shirt and they sat down on the couch.
âIâm sorry I turned away there.â Aubrey scratched his neck. âI just want to make sure that you see this thing between us the same way that I do.â
âOkay, I can live with that. Shall I start?â Rory asked, trying to make Aubrey feel comfortable with the talk.
Aubrey just nodded as an answer.
âI really like you, James. I havenât felt so in sync with anyone, like, ever. You make me feel better when Iâm sad and I want to spend as much time with you as possible.â Rory told him. âIf we go into this thing, I want it to be a serious relationship.â
Aubrey looked up and smiled.
âMe, too. I feel the exact same way about you.â Aubrey answered. âYouâre the one I want to tell everything to, good or bad. But like, even more than in a best friend. Even though Iâm bi, Iâve never felt this way about a guy before, but it doesnât scare me. Cause itâs you.â He confessed.
Rory smiled as well.
âOkay, so what now?â He asked.
âWould you like to go on a second official date with me tomorrow?â Aubrey asked eagerly, now knowing they were on the same page.
âIâd love to.â Rory smiled widely.
Aubrey stood up and walked to the door.
âIâm coming to get you at 6.30 pm. Wear something warm.â Aubrey winked.
âSee you tomorrow, James.â
âSee you tomorrow.â
30. Christmas market
Rory was nervous, to say the least. He did know that he and Aubrey were on the same page about this whole thing between them, but still. Luckily he didn't have to wait long.
A smiling Aubrey greeted him when he opened the door. He held something out to him.
âWhat is that?â Rory asked, opening the box.
âCookies.â Aubrey smiled. âI mean, that was one of the first things we did together: eat homemade cookies, so I thought.â
Rory awed when Aubrey blushed a little.
âThatâs so sweet, thank you. But I donât have anything for you.â Rory answered, feeling the heat rise up his cheeks himself.
âGoing on this date with me is enough.â Aubrey answered with an affectionate smile. âCome on, letâs get going!â
***
âOkay, this is an amazing place.â Rory awed when they arrived at the Christmas market.
âI know this is a European tradition, Christmas markets, so I thought youâd like it.â Aubrey said. Rory looked at him and kissed him on his cheek.
âItâs perfect, thank you.â Rory smiled.
âAre you up to skating?â Aubrey asked.
âAre you even kidding me? I love ice skating!â Rory exclaimed enthusiastically and Aubrey laughed. Rory knew he was way too enthusiastic all the time, but this was the first time he was on a date with someone of whom he knew they actually liked him back. And it was the most amazing feeling in the world.
***
Rory knew Aubrey was just kind of pretending not to be able to skate, but it was the most adorable thing ever. Aubrey would cling to Rory at all times, taking his hand or arm while trying not to fall over. And Rory was just feeling the butterflies at all times.
âDo you have a death wish?â Rory teased Aubrey when he almost fell again.
âHaha, yeah, you like laughing at me?â Aubrey rolled his eyes, but clinged at Rory again, his arms around Roryâs neck.
And suddenly their faces were just inches apart. This time, there was no sign of uncertainty with either of them. Just the curiosity and the tension that came with a first kiss. Both were determined to take the leap.
But suddenly, Rory slipped and fell backwards, tearing Aubrey with him. They both layed down on the ice, not being able to stop laughing.
âI think I hurt my tailbone.â Rory groaned while still laughing.
âCome on, I think itâs time to get off the ice.â Aubrey laughed and he tried to get Rory to stand up.
***
âWere you invited to Angela's for New Yearâs Eve as well?â Rory asked as he blew in his hot chocolate, hoping itâd cool down enough to drink.
âYeah, itâs just us, Daisy, Angela and Hodgins I heard. The Booths are out of town for the weekend.â Aubrey answered before sipping his own hot chocolate.
âI canât wait for the fireworks. Thatâs always my favorite part of New Yearâs Eve.â Rory admitted, already sounding enthusiastic for the event.
âIâm sure this year will be even more amazing, as I can spend it with you.â Aubrey answered. Rory opened his mouth to reply, but he didnât really know how to react, so he looked at his hands with a big smile. Missing Aubreyâs adorable smile in return.
31. Fireworks
âAre you sure you donât want to join us for the fireworks?â Rory asked Angela again.
âNo, the kids really should go to bed, but you guys have fun!â Angela answered.
Rory, Aubrey and Daisy put on their coats and went outside, looking for a good place to follow the fireworks.
âI really want to be in the mass of people.â Rory said, obviously excited. âThe ambiance of the countdown is always amazing.â
âThatâs okay by me.â Aubrey answered. âDaisy, are you coming, too?â
âNo, I really should head home,â Daisy answered.
âAre you sure?â Rory asked.
âYeah. Happy new year, guys.â Daisy smiled. They both hugged her shortly.
âHappy new year, Daisy.â
âSo, thatâs only us left.â Rory said with a smile. He offered Aubrey his arm and the other guy took it with a smile.
The animosity around them was amazing. There were people everywhere, ready to count down to the end of the year. Aubrey looked at Rory. He couldnât deny the butterflies in his stomach for the younger man. It was crazy how hard he had fallen in the course of only one month.
âCome on, thereâs where the party is.â Rory said enthusiastically and he took Aubreyâs hand in his to pull him closer to the enormous group of people on the square.
âOnly five minutes to go.â Aubrey said, looking at his watch. He took a deep breath before telling Rory: âI just want to say: thank you so much for the last month. You are an amazing person.â
Rory smiled shyly.
"You weren't that bad, either." He winked. âThank you so much, Aubreyâ
And suddenly the countdown started.
â10, 9, 8â
Rory looked up to Aubrey while the world around them was counting down to midnight.
â7, 6, 5â
âCan I kiss you?â Aubrey asked, barely audible over everyoneâs voices.
â4, 3, 2, 1â
Rory nodded, just in time for the end of the countdown. Aubrey pulled Rory close and pushed his lips on the other guyâs with more force than he had intended. Rory gasped. He closed his eyes and pulled Aubrey closer by his jacket, relaxing in the kiss. Their lips moved smoothly over each other, but Aubrey needed more. He let his tongue slide over Roryâs lower lip to ask for access. Fireworks were set off in his stomach when their tongues collided. He needed Rory closer, closer than was possible. He didnât want to stop, but he was in desperate need for oxygen. Aubrey broke off the kiss and let his forehead rest against Roryâs, panting for air.
âWow.â Rory whispered with an enormous smile on his face. âHappy new year.â
âLook to the future now, itâs only just begun.â
âYou are such a sappy git. Just shut up and kiss me again.â Rory exclaimed before taking Aubreyâs head between his hands and pushing his lips against Aubreyâs once again.

Imagine Aubrey bringing you your favorite soup when you're sick
Hi, guys! The imagines aren't coming that quickly now, but I'm writing an Aubrey/OMC Christmas fic I want to publish every day in December ^^ I couldn't help myself today though. Have fun!
---------
You huddled in your duvet in front of the tv and played a series on Netflix youâd seen a hundred times before. You felt like a truck had driven over your head, you were cold,... At least Dr Brennan didnât mind you calling off work today to stay in bed. Or in the sofa.
You were surprised when you heard knocking on your door.
âWhoâs there?â You yelled from the couch, not wanting to stand up.
âJames Aubrey!â You heard and you felt the butterflies in your stomach, feeling sick or not.
âCome in, the door is open!â
âHey, Dr Brennan told me you called in sick. Are you okay?â Aubrey asked while hanging his jacket over a chair as he looked at you.
âIâm sick?â You said with as much sarcasm as you could muster and Aubrey laughed.
âI brought you some chicken soup from the diner, cause I know you love it so much and I brought you some pain killers.â Aubrey smiled and he took out the take away container, together with his 7 containers. You know you couldnât hide the hearts in your eyes as you looked at him.
âI didnât ask you to do that.â
âYou didnât have to.â He answered as he took everything he needed. He suddenly stopped and looked at you. He put his hand on your forehead and your cheek. You closed your eyes and leaned into the touch. His cold hand relieved some of the giant headache you were having. He sat down next to you and you whimpered slightly at the loss of touch. You opened your eyes and looked at him embarrassed.
âThank you, James. This means a lot.â You said.
âI care about you, Y/N.â James said with a little genuine smile on his face. You smiled at each other while looking each other in the eyes. Everything stopped for a moment.
âCome on, letâs get some soup into you. And I have a double cheeseburger waiting for me.â Aubrey winked and you giggled. You ate in silence, just sitting next to each other.
âJames?â You suddenly asked carefully. Aubrey swallowed the last piece of his burger and looked up from his food.
âWould you maybe like to go on a date with me, when Iâm all better?â You asked, still carefully. The smile on Aubreyâs face almost made your headache disappear.
âYeah, Iâd love to.â He answered. He took your hand in his and pressed his lips on your knuckles. You smiled broadly and returned to your chicken soup.

Imagine Aubrey worrying about you before you go undercover.
Today's prompt is 131: âStop worrying about you? Stop worrying about you?! I can barely stop thinking of you!â
Oh yeah, I love James Aubrey. Kbye.
-----
You were alone in the meeting room of the Hoover building, preparing yourself to go undercover. It was all last minute so you were a little bit anxious, but this was everything you worked so hard for. Finally you could prove yourself.
âY/L/N, I heard youâre going undercover tonight?â Aubrey said, clearly out of breath.
âWhatâs wrong?â You asked. Aubrey had been your partner for a while and you trusted him with your life.
âI hurried to see you before you would leave.â Aubrey confessed. You smiled.
âAwe, are you gonna miss me?â You teased, but Aubrey couldnât laugh.
âBut, Y/L/N, undercover?â
âI donât understand.â
âWhat if everything goes wrong? You do know what happens there, right?â
âAubrey, I will be fine. Iâll be back in less than a week.â You said while you kept packing up your stuff.
âBut youâre there on your own andâŠâ Aubrey wanted to go on, but you interrupted him.
âAubrey, stop it. Like I said: Iâll be fine. I know what Iâm doing. Stop worrying about me.â
âStop worrying about you? Stop worrying about you?! I can barely stop thinking of you!â
You let your clothes fall out of your hands and looked at him in shock.
You closed the gap that was between you in a couple of steps, took his head between your hands and pulled him down to crush your lips on his. He didnât return the kiss at first, too shocked to understand what was really happening, but he did start to kiss you back after a second. He closed his arms around your middle to get you closer and deepened the kiss.
You broke it off and looked into his eyes.
âIâll be safe, really.â You said with a smile before kissing him shortly on his lips. âJust promise me one thing: take me to dinner when Iâm back.â
âI will. I promise.â Aubrey whispered against your lips and he kissed you deeply again.

Imagine Aubrey confessing his love for you after you were shot.
Based on prompt nr 440: âYouâre the only person I want to spend my life withâ I'm a sucker for some hurt/comfort. Enjoy!
------------------------------
You grimaced as you put pressure on the shot wound in your leg. It hurt like hell, but at least you were still conscious. The suspect got away, but that was the least of your worries now.
Aubrey entered the room, his gun drawn. He had heard the shot and had immediately run to the sound.
âShit, Y/L/N.â Aubrey said when he saw you laying on the floor in the kitchen of the suspect. âAgent down. Ambulance to 24 Ridgewood Avenue ASAP.â he said in his phone. He sat down on his knees next to you and he took the towel you were using to stop the blood to put the pressure on it himself. You groaned.
âJust a suspect who shot me. You know how it goes.â You tried to joke, but the pain was hearable in your voice.
âIâm so sorry I left you alone, this is all my fault.â
âNo, we just shouldâve waited for backup. Weâre both in the wrong here.â
After a short silence, the quiet was broken by the sirens from the ambulance.
âTake over, Iâll show them where you are.â Aubrey said with a reassuring smile.
***
You woke up in a hospital room all by yourself after a quick surgery. You had also lost quite a bit of blood, so you were feeling pretty weak.
âHey.â Aubrey smiled, leaning against the doorframe. âItâs good to see youâre awake.â
âYou stayed.â you smiled weakly. âCome in.â
Aubrey sat down at the end of your bed.
âYou scared me today, Y/N.â Aubrey said. He used your first name. You know he meant what he was saying. You took his hand in yours.
âItâs justâŠâ Aubrey continued. âIt made me realise how much you mean to me.â He looked into your eyes. There was something in them you hadnât seen before and your heart skipped a beat. Was he saying what you thought he was? You squeezed his hand, afraid to break the tension that was definitely building.
âY/N. I donât know how you feel about me, but I canât keep this a secret anymore. I was so close to losing you, and I couldnât bear the fact that you wouldnât know that IâŠâ He stopped for a minute. The only things you heard were the machines in your room and your own heart.
âI want⊠Iâm in love with you, Y/N. Youâre the only person I want to spend the rest of my life with.â Aubrey said. He wasnât looking at you anymore, but you smiled nonetheless.
âHey, James.â You whispered. âIâm in love with you, too.â
Aubrey looked up and flashed you his greatest smile. You were sure your lives were going to be amazing once you wouldâve recovered. And you also knew that James would be by your side in every step of the way.

Imagine Aubrey pulling a cliché flirting technique on you.
Just a little something ;) Gender neutral! Enjoy!
-------
James sat next to you on the couch with a very concentrated look on his face, watching the television. You smiled as you felt your heart swell. James was yours. You returned your attention to the soap playing on TV.
Next to you, Aubrey yawned and stretched his arm until it laid over your shoulder. You laughed.
âYou are so clichĂ©!â You giggled and you crawled into the embrace.
âIt worked though, didnât it?â James grinned.
You kissed him tenderly.
âIt did.â you said and you cuddled up to him.
âI love you, Y/N.â James whispered with his lips against your forehead. You planted a kiss on his chest before laying down again.
âI love you too, James.â

âAfter all this time, itâs finally finishedâ
âTechnically, itâs not illegalâ
âI canât believe you let me talk about that for an hourâ
âThereâs something under the bedâ
âKeep it down! Iâm trying to sleep!â
âI didnât really like that song you recommendedâ
âWhat in the early-2000âs-rom-com?â
âNo no no youâre telling the story all wrongâ
âI never learned how to driveâ
âMy shift is over, please let me go homeâ
âYou cut your hairâ
âNone of these trophies are mineâ
âToo tight! Too tight!â
âI saved you a seatâ
âThat really didnât live up to the hypeâ
âI ANGERED ONE OF THE CLOWNS WE NEED TOÂ RUN!â
âYouâre afraid of heights? Why did you go on the Ferris wheel?!â
âIf a genie offered you three wishes, what would you wish for?â
âSo ⊠you married?â âTried the marriage thing, didnât really work outâ
âIâve spent forever thinking about what Iâd say to you when I saw you again. Now that youâre here in front of me, I canât seem to find the wordsâ
âItâs good to know that youâre still the same old Aâ
âWe said weâd be friends forever, now look at usâ
âListen ⊠Iâm sorry about how we left thingsâ
âYouâre making a fool out of meâ âYouâre making a fool out of yourselfâ
âIf I want to get through the night, Iâm gonna need a lot more alcoholâ
âYouâre cute when you blushâ
âYou okay B? Youâre acting strangeâ âYup! Yep yep yep couldnât be better. Just a little hot- is anyone else hot?â
âA, I will make you pay for hisâ
âIâve never seen you squirm so muchâ
âWhen we meet your parents, Iâm gonna get my revengeâ
âI love embarrassing youâ
âIâve never been so humiliated in my lifeâ
âOh come on, I know you can do better than thatâ
âYou promised me a challenge. Do you always disappoint like this?â
âAw youâre ticklishâ
âIf you wanted to cuddle you couldâve just said soâ
âI thought you were gonna teach me a lessonâ
âDamn, you really enjoy pinning me downâ
âIâll get you next time, mark my wordsâ
âHold my handâ âI donât want to hold your handâ âSuck it up you have toâ âI hate you so muchâ âShut up and hold it alreadyâ (fake dating)
âI told everyone we came in here to make out. That should buy us some timeâ (fake dating)
âDONT COME IN! WEâRE UH- HAVING SEX!â (fake dating)
âIf I canât call you honey, what pet names can I call you?â (fake dating)
âLook, that right there totally meant nothing. Weâre just committed to this âfake datingâ thing so much that we made out behind this building. It happens!â (fake dating)
âBe real with me; how much of this was fake?â (fake dating)
âThey left- you can let go of my hand nowâ (fake dating)
âEveryoneâs gone, why are you still kissing me?â âBecause I donât think I can stopâ (fake dating)
âYouâre my new pillowâ
âIf we both want to fit, weâll have to cuddleâ
âThis is my favourite place in the whole worldâ
âI want to stay up with youâ
âDance with meâ
âCome on. Tell me a storyâ
âWe need to talkâ
âYou let this happen to himâ
âYouâre not who I thought you wereâ
âJust hold meâ
âWhat a waste of a perfectly good dressâ
âYouâre too muchâ
âI kept all the postcardsâ
âI never learned how to swimâ
âIâve been practising all year and I think Iâm ready to show youâ
âThis used to belong to my momâ
âYouâre going to have a fate worse than executionâ
âJust imagine the old ghosts that fill these roomsâ
âI never thought Iâd come back hereâ
âI sent you so many letters, did you not get them?â
âIâm sick of being ashamed of who I amâ
âThis is your final warningâ
âI donât believe in luckâ
âHow is this not enough for you?â
âI want you to come with meâ
âTonight, letâs forget about the rest of the worldâ
âI canât believe the train is lateâ
âSomething bad is brewing down thereâ
âLetâs promise to never forget tonightâ
âYour jokes arenât funny anymoreâ
âI thought that was lost foreverâ
âOof, who died?â
âYou couldnât have worn something more appropriate?â
âI didnât know which one you wanted, so I got them allâ
âI donât need a new year to be a new meâ
âYou will never redeem yourself. Stop tryingâ
âPut that away, people are watchingâ
âMy mother used to say thatâ
âI feel like Iâm suddenly wide awakeâ
âYou look really good in my clothesâ
âThis reminded me of youâ
âYour hands are warmâ
âI just want to relax in your armsâ
âLetâs go homeâ âIâm already homeâ
âMake a wish!â
âI could just stare at you foreverâ âCreepâ
âIâm so lucky to know youâ
âYouâre the most beautiful being on the earthâ
âHold meâ
âYou smell amazingâ
âI wish you could see the way I see youâ
âWhat are you doing?â âI was trying to make pancakes but it didnât exactly workâ
âThis isnât just a(n) [object], itâs a promiseâ
âSing to me againâ
âCome back to bedâ
âYouâre the only person I want to spend my life withâ
âMy parents love youâ
â. . . sorry, I talked too muchâ âNo no no not at all. Keep talkingâ
âOh my god you never told me you could cookâ
âOur kids are gonna be *mwah*!â
âCome on. Iâll show you how to danceâ
âI canât believe I never heard you sing beforeâ
âI know you had a bad day, so I made you cookiesâ
âLetâs go and look at the starsâ
âIs that . . . is that a dog?â
âIâm gonna need someone to kiss at midnightâ
âI canât stop thinking about youâ
âGet on my shoulders, youâll see betterâ
âIs be a great parent, Iâm just sayingâ
*Fogs up mirror and writes a message*
ïżœïżœI never thought I could miss someone this muchâ
âNot to be drastic, but I would jump off of a cliff for youâ
âYouâre breathtakingâ
âYouâre my new pillowâ
âItâs time that you tried my world famous Mac & Cheeseâ
âRemember back when we were kids?â
âHereâs another fun fact-â
âI donât know what Iâd do if something happened to youâ
âI slept for . . . like . . . six hoursâ
âYou come here often?â âThis is literally my houseâ
âThis is my favourite too!â
âEither burn the book or buy me a pizzaâ
âKaraoke with me or Iâll never talk to you againâ
âYouâve never been to the beach?â
âAre we locked in?â
âAre we locked out?â
âI had a dream about you last nightâ
âRemember when we came here as kids?â
âWhoâs kid is this?â
âThis is why I hate IKEAâ
âNo offense, you look like a raccoonâ
âMy hair is stuck!â
âI think thatâs mineâ
âCanât wait to meet the familyâ
âOnce again, Iâm getting the urge to start a small businessâ
âNo more breadsticks for you. Youâre addictedâ
âQuit trying to change the subject! You need to tell her what you didâ
âWhat do you mean you forgot your trousers?â
âJust sign it, pleaseâ
âYouâve never seen Mamma Mia?!â
âIâve been dying to show you thisâ
âWhen things go wrong, you talk to someone; you donât put a witch curse on someone!â
âHide! Weâre not supposed to be hereâ
âYou stole this design!â
âDonât you dare touch meâ
âYou let them do this to me!â
âYou donât deserve this painâ
âWhy donât you go crying to them then, huh? Thatâs what you did last timeâ
âI canât kiss you knowing that they kissed you tooâ
âLeaveâ
âI told you to stay away from meâ
âI canât believe you forgotâ
âAll you care about is yourselfâ
âI thought I told you to never come back hereâ
âI canât even look at youâ
âThis is what your selfishness did!â
âYou are evil, cruel, foul and you break everything you touchâ
âItâs okay if you donât blame yourself because I sure doâ
âPlease donât leave me hereâ
âEvery time I try to fix something I just make it worseâ
âYou donât deserve what I put you throughâ
âNightmares again?â
âEvery time I close my eyes, I see their face(s)â
âItâs all just . . . too muchâ
âEveryone Iâve loved has gotten hurt. I canât let that happen to youâ
âSo all those times you said you loved me, they were just jokes?â
âHey, you gotta stay awake, okay?â
âI just wanted to see your face one last timeâ
âYou didnât want to hurt me? Well guess what asshole, you hurt meâ
"It's called safety pin for a reason."
"Fine. I'll do it."
"That's really wonderful."
"I could use a hug right now."
"You're so stubborn!"
"Kiss me and/or shut up."
"Where does it hurt?"
"Honey, I'm home!"
"I would kill for dinner right now."
"The future is a mystery."
"Can't believe your still alive."
"Did you hear that?"
"I won't be participating."
"You're welcome to try."
"This looks kind of weird."
"How did you get in here?"
"Oh, the naive youth."
"This is definitely what you think it is."
"Are you trying to make me angry?"
"It's truly a miracle."
"We're way too drunk for this."
"Following the rules is boring."
"Good morning and goodbye."
"That was... interesting."
"Well, it is what it is."
"Last chance!"
"Not my first choice."
"Oops, too late."
"So many ideas, so little time."
"It was nice meeting you."
"You have to choose now."
"No. Not going to happen."
"Better say our goodbyes now."
"I won't let this happen."
"Everything went according to plan."
"We will not go there."
"Hmm. Not what I expected at all."
"The wonderful world of high school drama."
"Believe me, it was a struggle."
"Hard cash is a girl's best friend."
"Fine, let's do it."
"You live to annoy me, don't you?"
"I don't anything you say."
"Let's forget any of this ever happened."
"Well, that's your bad."
"Come on, take my hand."
"Bake me a cake, and we'll talk."
"Funny that you say that..."
"Is that my present?"
"That's my final answer."
"Looks good on you."
"How would you know that?"
"There are worse ways to die."
"Come on, let's be real..."
"Oh, I love how dramatic this is."
"What did you say?"
"I don't like this at all."
"Would you please just kiss me?"
"Why would you even care?"
"A day at the zoo, is what you need."
"This feels wrong."
"I've been thinking about you."
"Are you sure about that?"
"Don't worry, I got this."
"You're so crazy."
"Why are you always so dramatic?"
"I swear, it's the truth."
"None of this is my fault."
"You do know that we're in public, right?"
"I like that about you."
"Would you just shut up please?"
"Safety first!"
"You do have a stupid face."
"It was just a joke."
"Promise me just one thing..."

Imagine Aubrey and you had a fight, but he went to sleep before you could talk it out
just a little something cause i'm in love with james aubrey kbye
Prompt from @screnwriter-old-i-moved. Thanks!
-----------
You put your things in your locker and sighed. You were not looking forward to going home. Youâd had a serious fight with James before your late shift had started and you knew heâd be in bed by the time you came home. He had to start working pretty early in the morning.
You had fought about him getting in danger with his job. You knew you shouldnât be angry with him, but you loved him just so much. You were so afraid of losing him.
You sighed again. No need in postponing this.
*
You opened the door to your apartment as quietly as you could and threw your keys in the bowl next to the door before taking off your shoes. You put on your pyjamas in the bathroom, took your medication and went to bed. Careful not to wake James.
You let out a breath when you were comfortable in bed. You looked at him and couldnât help but smile. You knew he was still upset with you, but you would talk when heâd come home from work.
âI love you, James.â You whispered, just like you always did when you came home after he was asleep already. You didnât expect him to respond, but you were pleasantly surprised when he wrapped his arm around you and nestled his face in your neck.
âI love you too, Y/N.â he mumbled before placing a small kiss on your neck.
You smiled as you wrapped your arm around him and closed your eyes. See, everything will be okay.

Imagine getting Aubrey to eat ice cream together after a long day of work .
I know this is John Boyd as Stuart Scola (from FBI) and not as Aubrey, BUT LOOK AT THAT LITTLE SMILE.
This is a little one, especially for my 4 (!) followers! I really thought I'd do this all for myself ;) So thanks! :D
Prompt of the day: 86. "Let's get some ice cream." It's gender neutral again :)
------------
You walked into the bullpen at the Hoover building. It was completely desolate and dark, except for a light in the office at the other side of the room. You smiled when you saw your boyfriend at the desk, bent over paperwork with his hands in his hair. You knocked on the door and leaned into the doorframe.
âHey, Superman.â You said lovingly, but Aubrey just groaned.
âRough day?â You asked and he nodded. He collected all the papers to put them away and looked at you.
âCan I have a hug?â
You smiled and walked up to him. He stood up and you wrapped his arms around his middle to bury your head into his chest. You felt his body relax in your arms before he wrapped his arms around your shoulders, just to tighten the hug as much as he could. You broke the hug, but kept him close as you looked him in the eyes.
âCome on, letâs get some ice cream. On me. Youâve deserved it.â You said and you kissed him shortly.
âThis is why youâre my favourite person on earth.â Aubrey grinned and you laughed.
âI love you too, idiot.â

Imagine Aubrey taking care of you after you were in an accident
Based on the prompt 'Please, stay', and based on something that happened to me two years ago. x) Also: Aubrey is such a cinnamon roll and I love him to the moon and back.
Send me your own prompts! :D
-----------
âWhat the hell did you do now, Y/N?â Aubrey said with big concern in his voice as he entered the ER.
âA car thought it was necessary to say hi from up close.â You laughed, but you winced in pain. You had wanted to cross the street to say hi to Booth and Dr Brennan, but you hadnât seen the car that came from your left. The car didnât drive too fast, luckily, but had hit you nonetheless.
âYeah, Booth told me something like that.â Aubrey said softly and he sat down at the end of the bed. âAre you okay?â
âJust bruised up, thatâs all. Itâll hurt for a couple of weeks, but Iâll be okay.â You told him. âThe woman who hit me was really helpful. She called 911 and gave me some water. Also gave me her number to let her know I was okay. Booth almost gave the poor woman a heart attack though. He was so angry. Luckily, Dr Brennnan was there to tell him I would be okay.â
Aubrey just smiled.
âCome on, letâs get you home.â
The ride home was hell. You felt every bone and muscle in your body with every bump in the street. You were exhausted by the time you came home.
âIâm so glad my apartment is on street level.â You mumbled while Aubrey helped you out of the car. He smiled and gave you his arm to lean on.
He led you to your bedroom and helped you to get in bed. You winced again. Walking hurt, standing hurt, sitting hurt, laying down hurt.
âWhat do you want for dinner? Iâll order you some before I go home.â Aubrey said with a smile, the food order app already ready on his phone.
âPlease, stay?â you whispered.
Aubrey smiled at you. That smile he only reserved for the moments you were alone. The smile that gave you butterflies.
âIâm craving pizza. Okay for you?â he asked.
âOnly if Iâm getting that amazing garlic bread with it.â you smirked.

Imagine you and Aubrey sharing your first kiss.
Based on the prompt: âYour smile makes me smile. No thatâs cringe ⊠your laugh makes me laugh- thatâs even worseâ. You want to see another prompt? Let me know!
Oh yeah, I put it on AO3 as a Jessica/Aubrey drabble as well :)
Itâs gender neutral!
------------------------------------
You were in The Founding Fathers with Aubrey, just like you always are on Fridays after work. But today was different.
âHey, Y/N, are you okay?â Aubrey asked.
âYeah, itâs justâŠâ you sighed. âThe last victim was my age, had the same hobbies as me, lived in the same neighbourhood⊠I know I work with death all the time, but this time hit different.â
Aubrey didnât say anything, but took your hand in his. You smiled weakly.
âI realised how quickly it can all be over. And you havenât said what youâve always wanted to say, always waiting for the right moment. A right moment that never comes.â
âMaybe now can be the right moment?â Aubrey asked. He looked right into your eyes with that gentle smile you loved so much. You took a deep breath and nodded.
âJust let me speak, okay?â
 Aubrey just pinched your hand.
âJames⊠Iâve wanted to tell you this for a while.â You began. You already knew this was going to be awkward as hell.
âJames⊠I love hanging out with you so much. You always make my day. I just want to be with you all the time. Your smile makes me smile. No thatâs cringe ⊠your laugh makes me laugh- thatâs even worse.â
Aubrey laughed a bit, so you immediately shut up and looked at your hands, already regretting you said anything.
âHey.â Aubrey said and he got off the bar stool to stand right in front of you. He put his finger on your chin and forced you to look up to him. Your breath hitched in your throat and your heart skipped a beat.
âYour smile makes me smile, too, Y/N. And I want to be with you, too.â He said. You smiled.
âCan I kiss you?â Aubrey asked, almost whispering. You nodded slightly.
Aubrey brought his lips to yours, only softly discovering your mouths together. But it was enough to feel like you were going to explode on the inside. You took Aubreyâs shirt in your hands and put more pressure in the kiss. It quickly heated up, so he took a step back. You shortly looked at each other, both out of breath, before you began to laugh.
âSo thatâs what I call âcreating the right momentâ.â Aubrey smiled and you laughed before kissing him again.

Imagine Aubrey sharing his food with you.
Still writing my Bones imagines - or... Aubrey imagines (guilty). This one is very short and gender neutral ^^ Enjoy, for those interested ;)
------------------------------
âCheers, to the success of the case.â Booth said with a smile on his face.
âAnd to friendship!â Angela added.
âCheers!â Everyone responded.
You were at a Chinese restaurant with the entire Jeffersonian team, Booth and Aubrey. The chatter was light and jovial while everyone enjoyed their food.
You were so proud of yourself. And of your friends of course. But it had been the first case where Dr Brennan had let you take the lead while she had watched over your shoulders. A great responsibility as an intern. So you were allowed to be proud of yourself.
âHey Aubrey, howâs your orange chicken?â you asked with a smile.
âItâs so good! Itâs delicious! Wanna try one?â You nodded enthusiastically and he fed you a piece of chicken with his fork.
The table went quiet and everyone looked at you and Aubrey in shock.
âWhat?â You both asked in unison.
âAubrey does not share food.â Hodgins said.
âSo whenâs the wedding?â Booth grinned.
You looked at your hands and blushed slightly. Aubrey quickly looked at you with the love clear in his face, but he averted his eyes as well.
Always welcome to give me your prompts, with any of the Bones characters!

Imagine Aubrey being in love with you, but you have to tell him you're gay.
I know this fandom is kind of dead, but I'm in LOVE with James Aubrey and I couldn't help myself đ I hope there's at least one person who likes this as much as I do đ Enjoy!
Send your prompts for all the Bones characters if you want!
__________________________________________
You were standing over the remains in the bone room when suddenly Aubrey appeared.
âHi, bestie, how are you?â You asked enthusiastically. You were always happy to see him. You hadnât been friends for a long time, but you became very close very fast.
âHi Y/N, Iâve got a little surprise for you.â He smirked. You took off your gloves and walked to him.
âIâve got two tickets for Hamilton. I know you are a huge fan and theyâre coming to DC this weekend, so I thoughtâŠâ
âWow, thatâs amazing. Are you really willing to sit through a two hour and half long musical with me while Iâm fangirling all the way through?â you asked, teasing him a bit. You knew he was not a big musical theater fan. He just smiled.
âMaybe we can grab dinner before the show in that Korean restaurant weâve been wanting to go to for a while. Thatâs not far from the theater.â You said.
âThatâs an amazing idea!â Aubrey said. You hugged him quickly.
âUh Y/N?â Aubrey said, suddenly nervous. You looked up, right into his eyes, but he averted them and looked at his hands.
âWould you like to make it like... a date?â He asked, scratching his neck.
âOh.â You said, uncomfortably. âJames, I thought you knew.â
âWhat?â The tears stood in his eyes. You took Aubreyâs hands in yours.
âIâm gay.â
âOh.â
There was a short uncomfortable silence.
âYou can have the tickets and go with someone else.â Aubrey said.
âDonât be silly, James. If youâre still okay with it, Iâd love to go with you.â you told him. âI really love our friendship and I wouldnât want to throw it away for anything in the world.â
âReally?â
You wrapped your arms around his middle and buried your face in his chest. He hesitated for a short moment, but wrapped his arms around your shoulders.
Maybe he could live with the idea of being just friends, but it would take some time.
