Kit Snicket was four years old when the schism happened.
This isn't even some bullshit we all decided on. We know this is canon. She says it in The Pentultimate Peril.
Kit Snicket was four years old when the schism happened.
VFD is older than we know, and the schism is, at the very least, the result of the generation back. VFD wasn't some book club gone wrong with five members and headed by Ishmael. It was vast, old, and goddamn messy before the characters we know even got involved, really.
The schism wasn't caused by the night at the opera. It couldn't have been. This isn't even to mention the timeline issues of the medusoid mycelium and the sugar-horseradish crossbreed, which other people have brought up.
Netflix's timeline is... wrong. It's literally incompatible with book canon.

netflix: constantly presents every single character as either good or bad, either heroic or villainous
s3 netflix: hey so apparently there are no noble people in the world, everybody is a chefs salad even though we have gone out of our way to present a consistently black-and-white sense of morality 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Conversation
Quigley: So you guys were stuck with Olaf and his group for a while, right? Can I ask you a question about them?
Duncan: Yeah...?
Quigley: Is Esmé on cocaine?
Isadora: Oh, yeah.
Duncan: Constantly.

hi i just got to ishmael declaring himself the founder of vfd and uhhhhhhhh i got some bones to pick with that
-recruiting thru prufrock’s students directs the recruition process away from baby kidnapping and also erases that anyone who says a wrong sentance can be put at risk for vfd’s “well technically you said that so we own you” which was like, megacreepy, (shudders) but SO important to how vfd worked -vfd has crumbled the way something centuries old has crumbled, having the founder still be living is too clear, too direct. everything about vfd is confusion and mayhem and i liked that there was no once central figure to point and blame!!
But they were fucked up in their turn    By fools in old-style hats and coats,
the manipulations of vfd come from it being deeply rooted in the world, that no one even knows what healthy parenting is anymore, not from it being one or two generations that had an argument. vfd was crumbling in atwq when lemony and friends were just babies. vfd is about corruption and the cycle of abuse and the impact is lessened when you realize the wheel hasnt been turning for long

Larry: *dies*
My stupid ass brain that likes making everything sadder than it already is: Jacquelyn probably got a letter about Larry's death and she's probably devastated and blaming herself because she couldnt help him.
Me: CAN YOU FUCKING NOT????

CAN WE START TALKING ABOUT THE GREAT UNKNOWN NOW THOUGH BECAUSE
I have so many thoughts and so much excitement over the Great Unknown. we got to see its design and overall shape, we saw it in person and alive (at least in small glimpses) and it’s now pretty obviously confirmed to be the Bombinating Beast, the theory my poor marine biologist heart has clung to for years. I’m so excited and I’m so elated and I want to infodump about it and its physiology for hours

Some practically-minded volunteer brought Esmé into the VFD fold because she's a legitimately good financial advisor and they hoped she would subdue VFD's taste for elaborate mansions, exotic animals, and fleets of submarines
instead she was like "this is fucking rad, you should murder more people's rich parents so you can keep it up (not my acting coach's though)"

So, after Sir ran away, Charles got the Mill and the money.
Since Esmé and Jerome were still legally married, if she died or was pressumed dead after the Hotel fire, he would inherit her money too. (Also I believe he was also rich before marrying her.)
In TEE we know that Jerome had intentions of donating to charity.
Both Charles and Jerome were excited about having the Baudelaire children under their care and felt bad for failing them.
What I am trying to say is, they got married after TPP, rebuilt Paltryville, helped people in need, and adopted children. Since they now have worked their issues and got rid of their bad partners, they managed to give these children a good and supportive home.
