anon thank you SO much for this mental image. you have made my very miserable assignment-filled day. I have many thoughts about the sannin and baby sannin being inseparable best friends who were just normal kids make up about 90% of them. here's some hc I have about that (sorry for the massively long post, I'm a yapper at heart)

yes absolutely. I like to think of the sannin as misfits who never fit in anywhere else except with each other. there's so many different reasons for this. we know they became genin at age 6. if this makes them the exception, rather than it being the normal practice for a village in tumultuous times, then this must have meant each of them were prodigies in their own rights in the academy (yes, even Jiraiya I'd say, though I'd suspect his was more a case of recognised potential rather than showing any obvious prodigal talent from the get-go). this is further reinforced by the fact the third hokage became their sensei. I doubt the hokage would've taken up any random group of genin as his students. if this is the case, can you imagine how difficult it must've been for them to make friends with others, their age or otherwise? not only would it be hard to relate to their other peers cause of the age and probably ability gap, but I'd imagine people would've found them downright intimidating! all this, along with all their individual personality which, if their 6 year old selves were anything like their 50 year old selves, would've meant the little baby sannin would not have been anyone's first choice of friends.

so I'd imagine each of them being a bit of loners in the academy. then they get put in a team together. recognise they each stick out like a sore thumb from everyone else, but have all of the above common ground. their personalities are difficult for each to get used to initially, but once they do, these three super super super quickly become absolutely inseperable. to call them family would've been a serious underestimate of their relationship imo.

anyway this is all a long winded way of saying YES they're absolutely those regular childhood best friends who have sleepovers and hang out and play games. I imagine that tsunade grew up with a massive family in a massive loving home. direct contrast to orochimaru who's an orphan and, I imagine jiraiya is an orphan too (hence no canon last name). therefore, the senju compound is typically the designated sleepover venue.

the senju compound has mito, and nawaki, and depending on what your hcs are, would have tsunades parents, and I'd think they'd still effectively live like royalties even if the first and second are dead. (hashirama and tobirama wouldn't be around anymore by the time the three became genin I think, because (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) hiruzen would've already been hokage when he took on the three of them as his students, meaning tobirama would have already passed)

jiraiya and orochimaru just being at awe at the way tsunade lives and just how lively her house is and tsunade is just happy to have kids her age at home with her that just gets her cause her parents always nag her about training and chores, mito still treats her like a baby even though she's already a Shinobi that can take care of herself damn it!, and nawaki is so young he's so boring and sometimes gets annoying. so she always convinces her fellow teammates to come over to her house to practice and train, to babysit nawaki with her, to be the test dummy for try out this new jutsu or technique she's learning, and anything else that she insists she cannot do alone and needs them to be there with her

until suddenly it's already dark and oh her teammates can't possibly walk home all alone at this hour and besides my mum's making dinner and it's your favourite jiraiya and she'd scold me if I didn't offer some to you guys and orochimaru, mito found some sort of old scroll that uncle tobirama wrote about a new jutsu that she wants your thoughts on and besides, we have to meet sensei soooo early tomorrow for our mission and the training ground is closer from my house anyway, and you guys are just trying to get out of the bet we made and that's cheating y'know! and and and suddenly the senju compound just so happen to always have a few sets extra clothes and pyjamas that just so happened to be orochimaru and jiraiya's size and hey oro, raiya, look! it's got toads and snakes! and it matches mine! and the adults always just so happen to have two extra plates set at the table during meals, and the house just so happens to always be stocked up with both her teammate's favourite snacks, and orochimaru and jiraiya can suddenly enter the senju compound at any time of the day, with or without tsunade, and are greeted joyfully by the household's residents who had started nagging at them about training and chores and picking up after themselves, and mito is treating them like babies even though they're fully trained shinobis! and nawaki is being sooo annoying today and damn it, why isn't tsunade home yet? we agreed to train at 3!

(the three of them never quite notice that jiraiya or orochimaru's unannounced visits to the senju compound never trigger any of the seals that are activated by the presence of non-senju, non-family chakra in the compound. they never quite notice that the anbu guards at the front never give jiraiya and orochimaru any of the trouble or scrutiny that any visitors or guests to the senju compound are always subjected to, and the guards merely let them in with a slight bow of their heads, the same way they would to tsunade, or mito, or her parents.)

the only other times the sleepover isn't at tsunade's place is when there's a thunderstorm and orochimaru insists he needs to spend the night at his apartment because he tells them that last time the storm was this bad, lightning had struck a branch that smashed through his apartment that, if he wasn't already there and was even a little slower, would have destroyed the very few things his parents had left him that he so carefully keeps in a chest and he cannot ever take the risk that that would ever happen again he lost his power and his food went bad in his fridge, and c'mon tsu, you know oro not-so-secretly has a fear of thunder! don't you remember what happened last time at that mission where we were camping? we can't possibly let him spend the night alone at his house!

(later on when they're older, they'll come to find that jiraiya's new jonin apartment will become the new designated sleepover venue as jiraiya begins bringing back questionable sake from his missions that they were definitely too young to be having that he could not have possibly obtained that legally, and mito started banning them from playing card games at the senju compound when she noticed her granddaughter's tendency to lose her entire pay packet in a single game was becoming a bit too familiar to her... like a certain husband of hers' gambling habits that she had tried so hard to make sure wouldn't get passed on to the grandchild who the man had unwittingly taught said card games to at the age of 4. jiraiya started to call his apartment the degenerates' club then, much to the other two's dismay. though they couldn't quite protest when he correctly pointed out they were absolutely behaving like degenerates, even if princess tsunade and the leaf's once-in-a-generation prodigy felt like they were above those sort of disreputable behaviour.)

jiraiya and orochimaru fight tooth and nail that the massive forest that makes up the backyard of the compound, created by the shodaime himself of course, is the only reason they choose to hang out with tsunade at the senju compound, because princess tsunade (dammit oro stop calling me that!), the shodaime hokage seemed to have left so many fascinating things in this forest, there's so many secrets to discover. I don't think I've seen any of these species anywhere else in Konoha. I believe the secrets to some of his jutsu or techniques lie in this forest... oro you're such a nerd. and besides, Princess, the snakes here really seem to like oro for some reason and I think the toads are about to make me their king, I'm sure of it! and also, me and oro are the only people who don't find the fact you use the slime from those slugs in your potions or whatever absolutely disgusting, so we're the only friends you have to play in this gigantic forest with in the first place (it's not potions, it's a new medicinal gel I'm creating! and can you two just shut up? hide and seek is supposed to be a SILENT game and right now, you both really suck at it! I can literally locate you without even moving!) ...hey tsu, is mito-sama going to make those cookies she made last time again? she told me yesterday she would cause hiruzen-sensei told her we did a good job on our last mission.

the three of them knew everyone in Konoha had started calling them the 'Hokage's brats' behind their backs. but none of them realised that, particularly among the elders, this didn't seem to just be in reference to their sensei... there were other, more hushed whispers going around that if they had tried to listen to, would've sounded something like the adopted senjus... or lord first and second's legacies...

(these rumours may or may not have started when people started noticing tsunade's parents went from talking about their two children they adored, to their three rascals plus sweet little nawaki. or when mito kept comparing jiraiya's antics and personality to hashirama or orochimaru's brooding nature and hunger for knowledge was like tobirama's, or how tsunade's own hot temper and tenacity but also mischief was like her own's and the many Uzumakis that came before her, and that all three of them together balanced each other the way she, hashirama, and tobirama had. or when hiruzen constantly raves about his students and how much he sees his senseis in each of them and how the will of fire burns so brightly in them that he knew lord first and second would be extremely proud to see. in the end, though tsunade may have been the only one who shared a name with the senju founders, everybody couldn't help but see hashirama and tobirama and everything they had been and everything they had stood for in all three of the legendary sannin.)

Okay so this is getting into fanfic territory about something I'm working on, but I like to think that he helps them get better at negotiating and sneaking around by playing games with them. Hide and seek is a big one with them which is why when we (Astral Express) meet Hook and the other Moles they insist on playing that game.

More specifically, he promises that if even one of them wins against him, either as the seekers or as the ones hiding, they'll get a big prize (the bestest!!!!!). So far, they haven't won yet, but they're getting better, they are sure of it!!!!!!

Additionally, I'm a fan of the idea that Sampo taught them basic shit that you learn in kindergarten and stuff so that when they get the chance to go to school they won't be bullied by their lack of knowledge. He was sure that the 'ban' of the Underworld would be lifted before they are of the age to go to elementary school which is why he was insisted on teaching them the basics. Seele called his insistence stupid at some point but who has the bragging rights for being correct now?

Generally, Sampo is very touch starved and avoids it because it leaves an itchy feeling behind that makes him very uncomfortable but he was surprised to learn that he doesn't have the same problem with kids. Sure, if they hug him for long periods of time he gets uncomfortable but aside from that shit like pulling his pant leg to get his attention, using him as a monkey bar or dragging him around by his wrist when they want to show him something cool they found doesn't bother all that much.

Is on pretty good terms with Fersman (Hook's dad), surprisingly so. At first Fersman was very suspicious of Sampo but after a few months, he started feeling more comfortable around Sampo as they ended up being pretty good friends. Not close ones, but if Fersman needs help with something, especially if it concerns Hook and Natasha is unavailable or busy, he goes to Sampo.

They have this game where they have to sneak up on Sampo and as a reward they get 5 candies instead of the one he gives when he sees them. So far it hasn't worked but when they get close to doing so he gives them an extra one.

If Sampo is missing for more than a day or two (his usual) the first to notice are the moles and they ask (pester) Natasha where he is. Most of the time her answer is either that he is busy or, if he's missing for a week or so, she tells he's out gathering medicine and other supplies. Each time he returns from his medicine gathering the Moles insist to come with him so he can get back home faster and each time he tells them "maybe next time".

He always has candy in his pockets for the Moles.

Whenever Seele insults Sampo in front of Hook, she instantly defends him. It's hard to count how many times Seele wanted to insult that man but couldn't because Hook was in the room and would've been defensive over him. Anytime they do "fight" Natasha is quick to break it off.

Speaking of Natasha, whenever she sees Sampo not doing anything/he annoys her, she just send him off to look after the Moles. She says it's because he's the only one they somewhat listen to without the need to threaten punishment or chores but really she just eliminates two headaches that way.

Out of all the Moles, Julian is probably the most attached to Sampo due to being an orphan and Sampo being the biggest father figure in his life, which is why whenever he isn't playing with the moles and spots Sampo he follows him around like a lost puppy. Sampo noticed it pretty early on so he taught him a few tricks, like whatever the hell he did in the main quest where Julian turned himself into an adult.

What are some things you do and don't like about kizuna.

Oh wow that's a fun question!

I think what first brought my attention to Kizuna was the way she acted through the main story of Dra before the actual murder plot because i just found her to be such a funny character, she's like the kind of awful person type character that i've always found really funny to watch in media, a dumb moron that says and does whatever she feels like doing (almost on impulse a lot of the times) without thinking much about it and eventually gets what's coming for her because of it.

This was pretty much all i thought of this character for a good while, even when her FTEs were translated i didn't put that much thought into them back in the day. It was only when i got back into the Another series last year that i really started thinking about Kizuna in a more in-depth manner and i think the turning point that made me absolute adore this character is how aware she is about her actions, how she knows what she does is wrong and expects people to dislike her for it yet sticks to her instincts because that's the only way she was taught how to go by in life, (i made this whole other post about that a little while ago) and after that my liking for this character grew bigger and bigger.

She's a terrible person? Yes, no doubt about it, but a tragic one at that because Kizuna is not an awful person by nature, she was taught to be one. A lonely girl that pushes away the things she genuinely wants to have (real friendships with people who aren't after her solely for her looks) in favor of lying, manipulating and abusing others for her personal gain because that's what will actually get her somewhere according to her own mother and the environment she grew up in. Which becomes even sadder when you remember she never actually got to live beyond those toxic habits since the consequences of her actions brought her to the grave.

Now the second part of this ask is a little harder to me because the few things i dislike about her aren't about Kizuna herself, just Kizuna adjacent things because there's really nothing i dislike about the character herself (obviously not in a "i condone her actions" way) . One of those things is how in her final FTE Yuki apologizes to Kizuna for "being too harsh on her" and like,, no, buddy, you had every right to do that, this girl SUCKS.

And the other, bigger, thing is actually the one thing I dislike about Dra chapter 2 which is how Kizuna is treated in the later half of the trial. From the moment the cast finds out about her real intentions and sees that Akane isn't the actual killer Kizuna pretty much stops being trated as a person who lost her life in a slow painful death and just becomes a piece of a puzzle while the focus is shifted entirely onto the Ayame and Akane part of the tragedy, which i get needed time to shine too, but this always bugged me a little. Yes, Kizuna is the antagonist here, but she was still the victim of the case and as much as i adore Ayame Linuj's insistance in sidelining the horror of Kizuna's death in favor of painting her in a good light, even going as far as calling her "a saint" in her character profile, just rubs me the wrong way.

Gosh speaking of Drayton not being able to keep up with training + staying up for Iris, it reminds me of that other ask where Iris finds him asleep at the table. Just picturing she's holding Drayton's hand, feeling her heart break to pieces when she can circle her fingers around his wrist.

With the clothes Drayton is wearing + training he tries and fails to complete, maybe it hides how he's a smidge underweight for someone his age and height. Maybe he eats late or skips meals altogether because he prefers catching a nap than eating, and because he wants to eat with Iris. He keeps snacking on various snacks in the clubroom cause it staves off feeling hungry but it's not enough for a growing body y'know?

Now I'm also picturing Crispin, who doesn't fully understand but he too once grabbed Drayton's hand for whatever reason and like Iris, notices how his fingers can almost circle around Drayton's wrist. He knows at least that for a guy like Drayton, he shouldn't be able to do that. Crispin loves cooking, and he wants people to eat what they need cause 'food's important for your development!!' so he starts making 'test dishes' and having Drayton be his main taste tester.

Drayton has token complaints but he can't say no, not when Crispin's earnest eyes are looking at him and genuinely wants feedback so he eats, easing hunger that he wasn't really paying attention to. It becomes a routine, so much so that when Drayton sees Crispin with a box or dish he's just 'okay lay it on me. What is it this time?'

Just love these kids sm fr. I like to think that, for all their bickering, they care and look out for one another

No but that's so sweet of Crispin tho, that he also finds out abt Drayton not eating much so he makes him food which he disguises as his test dishes, but really, it's also a way to find out what dishes Drayton actually likes so he can make more of it for him

But what also gets me is the fact Drayton did have a dialogue going on how he likes the Academy Special or smth bc it's soft and he can gulp it down, barely even have to chew, so idk what to make of that without like,, y'know making it triggering for peeps so yeah ask me to tag stuff bc this involves,, this. Anyways, y'know, I do wanna say that's not on him being lazy that he doesn't chew his food much, rather, he just doesn't have the energy for it, or he just have a handful of food he can actually stomach down. Or he's a picky eater which then I will proceed to project lmfaooo

But also it'd be sweet tho if Iris does try to bring food from other regions back home after every Champion meet ups. Like yeah she sometimes come home late, but she always try to head home at least a lil bit earlier, oftentimes leaving the league duties to Hilbert for a bit, just so she can hang out w Drayton who she now knows always wait for her to come back home. So far he likes the curry from Galar bc it reminds of the one Crispin made too

That'd be so cute tho, Iris catching up w him, asking him abt his friends, she knows better than to ask him abt his classes

And he's there telling her abt how this one guy, Kieran, managed to beat him and became the BB League Champion, but now he isn't Champion and didn't join the league again. Then he tells her abt his friends, the E4, Carmine, and even some other students that talk to him. He then mentions abt the curry Crispin made too, how it's similar to the one Iris made, and Iris asks more abt him

And yeah, tells her how Crispin always makes these test dishes and would have him taste it first, some are good, some aren't much, but he loves how Crispin makes him his favourites sometimes

Imagine Iris smiling at that tho, that at least he eats well at school, when she subtly reached out to grab his wrist again while he was talking more abt his friends, she noticed it wasn't all skin and bone anymore, which lifted her spirits a bit, it was a small change but it was a change she'd love to see more of. Drayton said Crispin wanted to be a chef, well, perhaps as a thanks, Iris could pull some strings and have Diantha agree to let Siebold teach Crispin more abt being a chef, she thinks it's only fair for taking care of her brother while she's away

After catching up, Drayton grew tired, ofc, it was rather late, he stayed up late again for her, she tells him everytime he doesn't have to, but he really wants to. Imagine tho like true siblings Drayton asks Iris to carry him cause "what's the point of all that training with gramps if you won't put your muscles to good use."

"and good use being me carrying you to your own room?"

He gives her a cheeky smile all "yeah," which then made her roll her eyes at him

"fine, just this one time."

And just deadass gives him a piggyback ride lmfao, she's just "you're getting old for this, Dray."

"no I'm not, plus you owe me, you missed our training day so now you have to carry me."

But imagine tho as she's carrying him to his room, he fell asleep, and Iris finally noticed he wasn't as light as he was before, he grew a bit heavier than she last remembered, and that actually made her happy; she really has to give her thanks to Drayton's friends for taking care of him while she was away doing her Champion duties. But also her making a promise to herself to be on break for a bit and have Hilbert deal w being Unova's Champion while she really catches up w her brother, ofc, it's been a while, and she'd rather not have him stay up late again just to wait for her to come back home

In my haste I barely notice the approaching round of guards until there's a hand on my mouth and I'm pressed between the cobblestone walls and your metal frame. Vigilance and quick reflexes are attributes any competent knight should have after all.

The initial suprise, and then the humor surrounding our cliche position, quickly make way for a reinvigorated flare of desire. Even through the hard planes of your armor, how can one not appreciate your imposing physique? To have the length of your body wholly cover my own and to be protectively bracketed by your strong arms. I can barely wait for the footsteps to pass before I start to move against your thigh. Small shifts at first, but the friction feels too good not to move with more purpose.

When you first started to shift to the crook of my neck I felt a little indignation that you kept your hand in place. But with each nibble and lick I shudder, and the only thing keeping every pleased noise I make from echoing in the chamber is that damned hand. With words and lips no longer at my disposal I try to make my appreciation for your attention known in other ways. I shift my head to the side as much as possible to give you better access, while one of my own hands finds it's way up the nape of your neck and into your hair, alternating between pressing you closer and gently grasping at the strands in encouragement. I'm still unsure of just how much you're able to feel underneath the armor and the padding, but I still seek to caress the planes of your body, settling finally on your hip to give my grinding movements a little more leverage.

Your own hand wandered down my chest, rising and falling with each shuddering breath. Your other hand is not enough to muffle the gasping moan I let out in response to the warmth suddenly covering my cunt and the upward press of fingers. If your gauntlet was removed you'd be able to feel the wet spot that has managed to seep past my fine cloths. first off, if you want to spend more time way overthinking r sounds, there's a GREAT doctoral thesis about r variation in standard dutch. "The Sociophonetics and Phonology of Dutch r" by Koen Sebregts. i still haven't read all of it, but spent most of a dinner talking at my mother and sister about it until they were like "please we are begging you to discuss this with literally anyone else". secondly, /ɥ/ :)

i was hoping someone would ask about /ɥ/...this sound has been shrouded in mystery for as long as i can remember. we're talking as early as when i learned to count to dix (because of huit). it was one of the sounds i could hear but could not for the life of me figure out how people were making. it's like we grew up across the street from each other, and she was a little older than me and so smart and pretty and carefree and i grew up just yearning. from afar. knowing that /ɥ/ didn't even know i existed.

so you'd think, what, unrequited pining? WRONG. this is ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIP. didn't see that coming did you!!!! that's right, i can now pronounce the /ɥ/ sound. i can say it with my own mouth. and i do! i am saying this sound all over the place! we have ridden off into the sunset! we are on our honeymoon! it is happily ever after all up in here!!!

it's kind of interesting how this came about. i couldn't figure out how to make this sound until i learned how to identify and pronounce the /y/ sound, which makes sense given /ɥ/ is the semivocalic equivalent of /y/, but also makes no sense because then why could i identify /ɥ/ even before i could identify /y/? you'd think i would be able to hear both or neither, but not just one. and yet that is what happened. also, there was about a year between getting comfortable with /y/ and sealing the deal with /ɥ/. not sure what that was about either...like if you can make /y/ you can make /ɥ/, they're the same sound, they just occur in different environments...what would this trope be...ummm this is like if she were a superhero and i were dating her alter ego while also pining after the superhero. like babe i have good news for you! but also it's a little embarrassing after a year of dating to not be able to recognize someone when they take their glasses off.

in any case this is a very recent development, probably within the last year ish? it took me over two decades but i got there in the end. slow burn, happy ending. now if only i could figure out why word-final high vowels sound super aspirated sometimes, which is odd because aspiration is a consonant thing. With the new seasons coming next year take me back to when I watched Night of the Living Pharmacists for the first time realizing that not only were we going to get a phinbella plot but Isabella was also going to play an important role in the episode. 13 year old me was thriving it's the best Phineas and Ferb episode for a reason (even to this day rewatching it still has me kicking my feet and giggling)

OK THIS WAS LITERALLY MY EXPERIENCE 14 YR OLD ME WAS ALSO SHOOK AND GIGGLING AND KICKING HER FEET.

I remember this so vividly too, I had the episode written down on my calendar and sat down to watch it the day it aired. I was expecting a fun, Doof-centric halloween episode, nothing more. And then within minutes, Isabella was onscreen discussing an emotional bravery patch and confessing to Phineas and I was like??? Oh?????? Hello??????? PHINBELLA SUBPLOT YOU SAY?????????

It really is a shame that the end of this episode was shortened, the original ending had a Phinbella hug, there’s a storyboard for it out there somewhere. In my heart, they hugged😔

the thranto regency au is like. okay so thrawn has no interest in marriage and even less in politics and is being pressured by his family to find a match and he agrees to join the social scene in london in order to get them off his back so he can peruse his passions: being courtmarshalled every five minutes for being a wildcard in the napoleonic wars and flagrantly ignoring british naval policy. his family wants a match bc they think it will be a calming influence and perhaps keep him home more and like. out of the newspapers and such, so thrawn agrees to skulk around various london social events looking at rich people’s art and avoiding conversation

meanwhile eli’s family just came into a surprising amount of money and has hung all their hopes of solidifying their standing on him making an advantageous match, so he’s been attending every dance at their behest but hates everybodyyyyyyyy bc they look down on his accent (i was going to make him irish bc rich english people would look down on him/that accent in regency times but i can’t bear to make him not a cowboy) and are super snide and self motivated so he doesn’t want to marry any of them.

ENTER: thrawn, who is a little weird and likes to ask him all kinds of annoying questions but is at least not rude or cruel, and hey, maybe if thrawn and him pretend to be courting, people will leave eli alone and he can get enough distance from his family to do things like travel! and math! thrawn meanwhile is like. i showed this twink one page of nightswan’s (who is french in this bc that’s funny) shipping manifesto and he figured out exactly where they been stealing ammunition from and in what quantities. i’m keeping him.

anyways this is waaaaay to long but tldr thrawn and eli regency fake dating ends with them falling in love for realsies and eli running off with thrawn to live a life of adventure on the open sea and also be there as emotional support when thrawn gets his tenth court martial and ar’alani and bakif put their heads in their hands

hey! i wanted to say i really liked the load out and american pie and the way you talked about music. when eddie talked about his feelings about bruce springsteen i felt very seen on that. i was wondering in american pie talked about how it is important for punk bands to have a sense of humor in their songs too. as someone who obviously knows a lot about punk, do you have any funny band recs (preferably female-led, but i’m not picky)?

I'm gonna rec a few songs and bands and link a playlist, but im also going to be enlisting the help of @weaponsofclairvoyance and any of my other mutuals who might have suggestions! Also, as Saira pointed out, just because they're jokes doesn't mean they're good jokes (punk being a genre notoriously populated by dirtbags and idiot teens lol).

Punk humor ranges from the embarrassingly juvenile (Buzzcocks - Orgasm Addict, Childbirth - I Only Fucked You as a Joke, Replacements - Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out) to the darkly ironic (Ramones - Today Your Love Tomorrow the World, Dead Kennedys - Kill the Poor, The Muslims - Blink 9-11) to the just plain weird (The Rezillos - Flying Saucer Attack, The Cramps - I Was a Teenage Werewolf)

I think if I was going to pick one band for you to check out it would be The Cramps (female fronted with lots of weird and humorous songs to choose from, as well as just being great music). But I'll link a playlist (which I'll add people's suggestions to)! This playlist consists of the very broad topic of Punk Songs with a Sense of Humor, which includes but is not limited to Joke Songs. It's nuanced. It's complex. It's extremely dumb <3
