I still think both the set-up and payoff are inspired! :)

I enjoy a ‘double joke’ --- in which you’d get the punchline...then another punchline (closely after). In the case of the scenes surrounding the inciting incident (Becky being let go from her job), it revolved around the shirt.
The whole ‘I accept’ reveal was the first (we don’t see what’s on the shirt until Becky starts covering it up with her jacket...with the plan to reveal it later). Then the green shirts of her team to congratulate her...is the second.
If you’d ask me to pick a genre that JJ would do in the next 3 years. It would be The Romantic Comedy. Being reminded that this was actually a Bad Robot production (very unexpected based on what they’ve been doing during those years)...yet....it’s a no brainer. Abrams has the chops early on (come on! Felicity!) and having him as a consultant works really well (I really enjoyed the commentary...and hearing the bits of input that made the film better).

HIGHLIGHT:
INT. DAYBREAK CONFERENCE ROOM - DAWN
BECKY walks into the conference room, an armload of papers. LENNY in tow.
BECKY Well, I met Paul.
LENNY You talked to him alone? I told you to come see me first.
BECKY I know, but...
She shrugs and shakes off the memory.
BECKY What was I gonna do? (To the rest of the staff) Hi, hi, everyone. Hi, I...I'm Becky.
The rest of the staff are seated. Not really rolling out the red carpet. It's just a matter of time before the revolving door of EPs spits out another one.
ERNIE is on the phone and gives her a small smile and a nod.
COLLEEN Oh, God, look who's here. I mean, not here.
The staff chuckle.
COLLEEN Ha ha ha. McVee. So Shocking, huh?
BECKY shifts in her chair and looks around.
LENNY Yeah, well, Mr. McVee doesn't always come to these things.
She turns to the staff member right outside the conference room.
BECKY Oh, um, could you tell Paul that we need him please? Thanks. (to staff) Um, okay, so let's just dive in...
She gives them a big smile and mimics the rising sun with her hands.
BECKY ...shall we? Uh...
She glances at her notes.
BECKY Who wants to start?
One of the producers raises his hand.
COOKING PRODUCER Tomorrow, Rocco DiSpirito wants to make lasagna. I told him we that last week with the Barefoot Contessa, but he's insisting. What do I do?
BECKY starts to make a note but is quickly interrupted.
FASHION PRODUCER For the segment on miniskirts, do you want all size models...
LISA For next week, I want to do a piece on juice cleanses. All the celebs are doing them and they have amazing powers of rejuvinization .
BECKY studies her while concentrating on what she's saying.
LISA My idea is that I get a juice cleanse and then we can, like, measure my toxins---
SET DECORATOR For the Carville interview...I'm sorry, Lisa, do you want the living room set or the stools?
BOOKER ABC says we can't have Eva Longoria until two weeks after she does GMA. What do we do?
PRODUCER 5 On psychic animals, would you prefer a parakeet or an iguana?
ERNIE I'd like to do a piece on weathervanes. They are fascinating.
BECKY turns to ERNIE who is holding up two weathervanes: an archer and a rooster.
ERNIE Like, did you know the word 'vane' comes from the Old English 'fana'...
BECKY nods. Taking in more information.
ERNIE ...which means 'flag' or 'weathercock'?
PRODUCER 6 Friday, for cooking with squash, inside or on the plaza?
PRODUCER 7 Okay, they're offering us the third lead in the new Patrick Dempsey movie. Do you want him?
PRODUCER 8 Great story out of Tampa about a retirement account scandal.
She turns to the producer
PRODUCER 8 But we got to move quick. Should we send a team or just local talent?
BECKY strains to keep up as dialogue starts to overlap.
SOUND ENGINEER Mixing board in the control room's on the fritz. 10 grand to fix it.
PRODUCER 9 For the piece on baby food, do we want an actual baby...
More overlapping chatter
PRODUCER 9 ...and if so, white, black, Hispanic, Asian...
BECKY stares at her notes.
PRODUCER 9 ...blond hair, brown hair, teeth, or no teeth?
BOOKER I have a black baby at home.
The overlapping chatter is converging as one...and BECKY is attempting to single out content with no success. LENNY rubs his eye.
BECKY I'm sorry, I can't hear what you're saying. I...
PAUL walks in.
PAUL Hello! Hi, hi. Does someone wanna tell me why I had to log off ---------------.com for this?
The staff look at him with contempt and groan.
LISA A------
The room is quiet. PAUL looks at BECKY expectantly.
BECKY turns to the COOKING PRODUCER
BECKY Tell Rocco if he insists on making lasagna, he will be bumped. (to the fashion producer) Yes, all size models, but skirts not too short.Toxins?
She turns to the group.
BECKY Toxins? Who said that?
LISA holds up a finger.
BECKY Yeah, they can't be measured. And 'rejuvinization'? Not a word.
LISA (mouths) Okay
BECKY (to BOOKER) Tell Longoria's people that she can't plug her next film...
Staffers start to smile and nod as BECKY takes the reigns.
BECKY ...unless we get her within a week of GMA.
the BOOKER nods.
BECKY whips to PRODUCER 5
BECKY Parakeet. (to Ernie) Ernie, weathercock? Seriously? (to Producer 6) The plaza for squash. (to Producer 7) I want Patrick Dempsey.
PRODUCER 7 nods. the BOOKER has his head down, shaking it, smiling --- in disbelief on how Becky has handled the situation.
BECKY Tell his people we'll run him in the first hour and he can talk about whatever his thing is. (to Producer 8) Tampa Bay, definitely local talent. (to Sound Engineer) And we've got to fix that sound board. Find that 10 grand in the budget somewhere.
The SOUND ENGINEER nods then BECKY gets an idea.
BECKY The hair and makeup numbers, those were too high. So, Colleen, could you share your hair person with Lisa on her days?
COLLEEN I'd like to talk to you about that.
BECKY Great. (to Producer 9) Asian baby, no teeth. Lesbian parents.
PRODUCER 9 Oh, okay.
BECKY looks around the room.
BECKY Did I miss anything?
The staff talk amongst themselves as PAUL turns to exit.
BECKY Oh, Paul!
He turns back.
BECKY Uh...You're fired.
PAUL smiles.
PAUL You're adorable.
BECKY Fired!
She gives him a look of contempt. No jokes here.
The rest of the staff look on...silence...jaws dropped. The FASHION PRODUCER raises his phone up to take a photo of PAUL's reaction.
the BOOKER leans in and smiles as they both watch the screen. CLICK! Then laugh as the moment has been documented. Some staff cover their reactions. LISA is surprised at the turn of events.
PRODUCER 5 and PRODUCER 7 smile at BECKY in awe.
BECKY I'm sorry. That was unprofessional.
the FASHION producer raises his hands and bows to BECKY. The staff start clapping and a couple wolf whistle.
ERNIE however is unsure of what's going down.
--------
My verdict of the film: 6/10
Link to the timestamp commentary: TBA (It’s likely that I saw it for the first time...before making them)

Shed the Pounds for the Summer plan:
I always feel self-conscious about my legs and my waist whenever summer rolls around and its basically impossible to hide under layers. So I have decided to reach my UGW before the start of June - this also aligns with my Graduation so yay to me.
Here is the plan:
Water Fast/Master cleanse for 7-10 days:
I have some master cleanse juice mix left so I can use that and mix it in with a water fast until I consume it all.
March:
7 days: 17 -24
10 days: 17-27
And if I make it to the 27th, then I might as well go for a home run and fast til the 31st
THEN ON APRIL ITS TIME FOR THE ABC
Tumblr media
I plan on aligning the days with fewer calories with my most busy days, this way, I can restrict by not bringing food with me to college/work and its just more manageable since I'm gonna be working anyway.
This way I can leave the more calorie-heavy days for the weekend when I meet my friends and usually drink (if I don't eat then the alcohol can count as my calories + I won't need to buy multiple drinks to get drunk).
If I follow this plan then I’ll be done with the ABC by May 12th and my graduation is one week later, so ill be able to look good in all the pictures I take with my friends in our gowns. Even if I don't see them for years they will have great pictures to remember me for (like the skinny bitch I aim to be).
Side note: on my High school graduation I had a huge pimple on the middle of my forehead and like a double chin so this is super motivating for me. Finally looking good in a fucking yearbook (and the last one at that)
Plus, once the summer comes around and everyone leaves I get to fast in peace again while job hunting.
OK, NOW THAT I PLANNED IT OUT I HAVE TO STICK TO IT.
You got this. You want this. You can make this happen.

Ilfenesh Hadera Eats Veggie Burgers For Breakfast
We’ve long been fans of the beautiful Ilfenesh Hadera, whose beauty (both inside and out) was obvious the minute we met her. We caught up with the actress (currently starring in ABC’s Deception, the finale of which airs this Sunday) in NYC to talk about favorite New York meals (she has a lot!), beauty routines and body image…
From start to finish what would be your ideal food day?
I love breakfast, it’s my favorite meal and when it comes to what I eat in the morning I’m a real creature of habit, so my perfect breakfast would be what I’ve been having daily for the last month or two. A Dr. Praeger kale veggie burger. I love the idea of getting my veggies first thing in the AM and in the colder months it’s nice to start with something warm. And I ALWAYS make two skim cappuccinos before I leave the house.
I haven’t been in a long time but I used to love to go to Cafe Cluny for lunch. It’s bright but it’s still cozy and it’s perfectly nestled away – though always lively. I love their tuna burger which comes with a wonderful wasabi mayo and fries. Add a glass of Nebbiolo and I’m happy.
For a post lunch (post wine) pick me up, I might walk over to Sant Ambroeus on Lafayette for a cappuccino to-go – to-go partially because I love their to-go cups.
Dinner’s hard to say because there are so many amazing places in NY, so I have to do it this way – the focaccia from Charlie Bird – bathed in olive oil, sprinkled with sea salt, crunchy crust, warm and soft inside, little rosemary to finish. For appetizers, I’d do the Insalata Verde from Via Carota which is a tower of crisp leafy greens lightly dressed in a sherry shallot vinaigrette. The tuna tart from Bond St sushi, which I could eat every day for every meal, and the leeks from Pasquale Jones which are cooked with walnuts and parmigiano reggiano (my grandmother now does her own version after falling in love with theirs). Entree would have to be the steak au poivre from Raoul’s, extra au poivre sauce on the side. I’m not huge on dessert but birthday truffles from Momofuku Milk Bar are my weakness. And wine with that! Lots of red wine.
How do you practice beauty from the inside out?
To me physical beauty is lovely but there’s nothing so special about it. A. Anyone can pay for pretty and B. If you were born what our society considers classically beautiful or handsome, it was only by luck, you didn’t do anything to earn it. I think if you approach beauty that way it’s impossible not to see the value of internal beauty; kindness, compassion, generosity. When that light’s on inside, people will notice you and for all the best reasons.
What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?
Mornings are pretty simple, I use the Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Extra strength Daily peel followed by the SK-II R.N.A Power face cream. If I’m not working or auditioning I prefer to go wothout much makeup so I’ll do brows – Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color, Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara, and Sephora brand black liquid eyeliner. At night I use Caudalie makeup removing cleansing oil, Kate Somerville’s detox daily cleanser and then the SK-II mosturizer again. My skin is the best it’s ever looked since I started using it; it’s hydrating but never greasy. Finally, I put on some Dior Creme de Rose smoothing plumping lip balm and I’m ready for bed.
What are your favorite workouts?
The Dogpound is my home away from home; it’s my perfect place. From the trainers, to the other clients, to the facility itself…It’s impossible to step foot in that gym and not feel motivated by the hard work and enthusiasm of everyone in the room. The trainers are top notch and they really listen to your fitness goals and push you to achieve those goals. On days that I don’t go to DP I love flywheel for some good old-fashioned cardio and the Barre classes at Exhale.
What were you always insecure about growing up, and how did you overcome it?
I think that insecurites come and go – hopefully go more than come – so at different stages in my life I’m sure I was insecure about different things. When I grew nearly twelve inches the summer before 8th grade I imagine and went back to school feeling a little awkward. I wasn’t necessarily aware of that insecurity, but an older friend one day pointed out how bad my posture was. I can still see thirteen-year-old me leaning SO deep into my hip to make myself shorter. Thank God she snapped me out of that. I don’t know where it came from but from about that age my feeling was and still is, for the things you can’t change – height, cup size, that area of your body that never looks quite the way you want it to – embrace it! It’s yours.
What advice would you have for young women struggling with body image?
Just that. To embrace yourself and love where you came from, your history, your ancestry. I’m a product of my mother and father whom I love fiercely as well as all those who came before. I am them, the best and the worst of me and I love seeing them when I look in the mirror.
What foods and drink do you love? Which do you avoid and why?
I like simple food. Grilled or baked vegetables, meat and fish are my favorite. I really think less is more when you’re working with fresh and in-season ingredients. I won’t drink soda or fruit juice and I don’t eat candy. Luckily I have very little taste for the sugary stuff.
What three things are you coveting right now?
I just got a beautiful new sofa so I shouldnt say this but the Montauk Jane sofa would be heaven to park my butt on every night
I don’t wear a watch but if I did it would be this one.
A custom made gold signet ring from Rebus.
What are the hair products you can’t live without?
I love the Aveda Men Pure-Formance shampoo and conditioner as well as Acai Buriti Maracuja Oil.
If you could put a quote on a t-shirt to sum up your current mood and mode, what would it be?
I’m not sure. Moods are ever-changing and I could sport a shirt today that I’d want to burn by next week. If I had to pick though, it’d be something about gratitude as an expression of my appreciation for a wonderful life or a reminder on the days I’ve forgotten.

A Day In The Life Of Benjamin Law, Writer
A Day In The Life Of Benjamin Law, Writer
A Day In The Life
by Sally Tabart
One of the first thing’s Benjamin Law does every day is clear out his inbox before 9am. Photo – Alisha Gore for The Design Files.
Bits and bobs from Ben’s house. Photo – Alisha Gore for The Design Files.
‘You’re allowed to say “no” and you don’t have to give a reason. Simply say you’re unavailable and unable. This is a much better alternative to saying “yes” just to get someone off your back, and making your future self furious at you,’ says Ben. Photo – Alisha Gore for The Design Files.
Spending a lot of writing time alone, Ben tries to leave the house at lunchtime. Here he is at Boon Cafe in Haymarket. Photo – Alisha Gore for The Design Files.
Usually Ben eats his breakfast with green tea, or sometimes a Virgin Mary – hot and spicy V8 juice with squeezed lemon. Photo – Alisha Gore for The Design Files.

Ben exercises after 5pm most days, either swimming or yoga. He loves swimming at The Prince Alfred Pool in Surry Hills. Ben at Photo – Alisha Gore for The Design Files.

Writing about a writer is one of the most daunting tasks for… a writer. I’m always worried about doing something sloppy, like repeating the same word three times in one sentence (see: previous sentence). It’s especially nerve-wracking when the subject is as prolific as Benjamin Law, one of the defining voices in Australian culture over the past 10 years.
Ben grew up on the Sunshine Coast, to Cantonese parents who migrated to Australia via Southern China (Ben’s Dad) and Malaysia (Ben’s Mum), via Hong Kong. Based in Sydney, Ben describes himself now as pretty much the same as when he was a kid: ‘obsessed with sex, annoyingly attention-hogging, insatiably curious but could be immediately reduced to silence if you put a good book, movie, TV show or magazine in front of me.’ Only these days, he’s the one writing the material.
In 2010 Ben published the hilarious, poignant memoir, The Family Law, and then in 2012 a travel book exploring the queer experience in Asia, Gaysia: Adventures in the Queer East. Both were nominated for Australian Book Industry Awards, and the former was later adapted into a groundbreaking TV series on SBS. He’s written more books, countless features and worked on film and television projects. He’s also working on a play – because clearly, he doesn’t have enough going on right now!
Next week, Ben’s latest endeavor – a documentary called Waltzing the Dragon – will premiere on ABC, where Ben travels with his parents from remote Northern Australia to Chinese megacities to explore the overlap in cultures. ‘On one level, it’s a history of the Chinese in Australia – a history that pre-dates the First Fleet and white arrival on this continent by centuries – but it’s also a massive road-trip with my um and Dad to find our own roots,’ Ben explains. ‘Some of the stuff we unearth will completely up-end your understanding not just of Chinese-Australian history, but Australian history in general.’
No two days are ever the same for Ben. ‘I don’t really have anything resembling structure nowadays’, he admits. In lieu of regular programming, he has a ‘some habits and ground rules’ to keep it all together – showering first thing, clearing out his inbox before 9am (‘it’s like a healthy little mind audit before the workday starts’), exercising and at the end of the day, truly switching off and decompressing with his boyfriend.
Ben is a wealth of wisdom when it comes to carving out space for himself in the midst of a sometimes chaotic, always random routine. From scheduling his iCal ‘down to the minute’ to stopping all things digital by 10pm, Ben shares how he gets it all done.
FIRST THING
I like the idea of getting up by 6.30am because I enjoy the feeling of having a headstart on everyone else, but it’s usually 7.30am. I like reading before bed and I usually do that until midnight, and I need exactly 7.5 hours sleep. It’s like my body’s finally said, ‘It’s non-negotiable.’ I’m also a super-deep sleeper. Waking up is like trying to exhume something dead from an oceanic trench. But for the last few years, I’ve used an amazing app called Sleep Cycle, which both monitors your sleep and ensures you wake up at a point in your sleep where it’s not jarring and horrible. I love it so much.
My boyfriend is usually up before me and he’s usually watching ABC News Breakfast while reading the news; I tend to prefer having ABC RN Breakfast on the radio with Fran Kelly or Hamish MacDonald.
I do a poo, have a shower then clear my inbox. Sorry: is that too graphic? Basically, it’s a lot of purging and cleansing from when I wake up until 9am.
MORNING
Breakfast often makes me gag, so it’s usually something light, like miso soup and fruit, or toast with butter and vegemite, and crunchy peanut butter with honey. And it’s usually with green tea, or sometimes a Virgin Mary – hot and spicy V8 juice with squeezed lemon.
Then I work: whether that’s doing interviews for Good Weekend, prepping Stop Everything – the ABC RN pop culture show I co-host with Beverley Wang– or just writing for a deadline or project.
If I’m about to launch into writing that requires proper focus, I forcibly disable the internet by activating Freedom on my laptop and Forest on my phone.
LUNCHTIME
On writing days, it’s common that I won’t even leave the house or have any human contact until 5pm – and perhaps a bit disgustingly, I don’t actually mind that at all. But sometimes I’ll pop down to Spice Alley – which is super close to where we live – for a cheap and cheery lunch.
AFTERNOON
It’s usually just writing, meetings and admin all arvo – a big happy horrible mess. My iCal is colour-coded within an inch of its life for this reason. Basically, my work is kind of like triage all day, and then I try to ensure the bleeding stops by 5pm.
EVENING
I try to finish by 5pm. It’s tempting for freelancers to keep working, but unless I’ve got a deadline in the next hour, I tell myself to stop. Because there’s always more work that could be done. It’s really important to me to sound boundaries nowadays.
After 5pm, I try to take a break – check the mail, do some housework, laundry, clean the kitchen, meal prep for dinner – then either swim laps, go to the gym or do some yoga with this great app called Pocket Yoga, which I prefer to classes.
I then make dinner, catch up with my boyfriend Scott, decompress, watch the news and Leigh Sales on 7.30, then it’s whatever we’re watching. Some of the stuff we’ve loved this year have included Pose, Stranger Things, Fleabag, Catastrophe and Game of Thrones. And RuPaul’s Drag Race, obviously.
LAST THING
Work-wise, I always give my inbox a little late-night purge again, if possible. Then I go into iCal and I plan the next day right down to the last minute, including breaks, exercise and social stuff with mates. If I have to be my own boss, I figure I can ride my own arse. And there’s no white space in the iCal, because if there is, I know my instinct is to fill it with work. So I trick myself by scheduling my breaks.
Over the last year or so, I’ve kept to a new habit: around 10pm, I set my phone’s alarm clock (via Sleep Cycle), switch on the Do Not Disturb mode and have it lying face down. Then I have a shower – as if to wash off the day and my digital reliance – and come into bed to read a book. Sometimes it’ll be The New Yorker, but it has to be on paper. I’ve gotten my boyfriend into the habit too, and I think it’s actually my favourite part of the day: feet tangled under the doona, each of us immersed in something.
Ben working from his standup desk at home. Photo – Alisha Gore for The Design Files.
Right now I’m listening to/watching/reading…
Music: Mark Ronson’s Late Night Feelings; Gabriel Kahane’s Book of Travelers; and new tracks Washington (Megan Washinton, who’s a mate of mine) has been working on.
Podcasts: Internationally: Fresh Air, Still Processing, Nancy, Touré Show, New Yorker Radio Hour. Australian: The Signal, Background Briefing, Conversations, Ladies, We Need to Talk.
Reading: A combo of Vicki Laveau-Harvie’s The Erratics, Deray McKesson’s On the Other Side of Freedom and Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous. The last few books I’ve really devoured have been Rebecca Makkai’s The Great Believers and Max Porter’s Lanny.
One important thing I do every day is… Move my body.  And decompress with my boyfriend.
I get my best work done when… I’m able to give it the time it warrants. It’s better to allocate the right amount of time something needs – and breathing room in case it goes wrong – rather than constantly being a deluded time-optimist.
A philosophy I live and work by is… When deciding on projects, Laurie Anderson says it needs to fulfill two of the following three criteria: it has to be fun, it has to be interesting and it has to make money. It can’t just tick one box: only two or more. Similarly, I need projects to be fun, challenging, make money and I need to have the time.
My productivity tip/tool is…
If you need time away from the internet, install Freedom onto your computer and Forest on your phone. Forest is an app that’s like a Tamagotchi: you plant a virtual cartoon seed for a set time. If you check another app in that time, your plant dies and you have a dead forest. It’s a surprisingly emotional experience!
Another big breakthrough I had is with transcribing interviews. Traditionally it took me about 120 minutes to transcribe a 30-minute conversation. It’s so painful. And all the voice transcription software I’d ever tried over the past decade has been shit. But my boyfriend and some mates put me onto Otter recently and it’s been life-changing. I almost get emotional about it.
Finally: all huge tasks are like bricklaying. You’ve got to break down big goals. Don’t just have ‘write book’ or ‘write play’ as your daily task, otherwise, you’ll intimidate and scare the shit out of yourself. Break it into monthly goals (eg. finish chapter), and break those into weekly goals (eg. complete key interviews) and break those into daily (eg. 750-1000 words) then hourly goals (125 words per hour doesn’t seem that intimidating, suddenly). It also means you have closure on the day and feel like you can reward yourself.
Something I learned the hard way is… You’re allowed to say ‘no’ and you don’t have to give a reason. Simply say you’re unavailable and unable. This is a much better alternative to saying ‘yes’ just to get someone off your back, and making your future self furious at you.
Tune into the first episode of  Waltzing The Dragon With Benjamin Law this Tuesday, July 30th at 8.30pm on ABC, or catch it later on ABC iView!

Craft Across America: 50 States, 50 Proudly Local Beers, Wines, and Spirits
With no legal definition of “craft,” it’s easy to dismiss it as a marketing term. But maker culture transcends jargon. Across the United States, independent, locally minded producers create products that showcase heritage crops and area traditions. Now, anyone thirsty for small-batch drinks with regional flavors can find them in communities and cities across America.
Here are 50 truly local beverages made in all 50 states. If you’re planning a cross-country road trip, make sure to leave room in your trunk for these souvenirs.
Alabama: Dettling Straight Small Batch Bourbon
Launched in 2017, Alabama’s first bourbon makes use of the state’s abundant corn to produce this small-batch spirit that tastes a bit like freshly baked bread, with notes of rye and oats.
Price: $37.99 for a 750 ml-bottle of small-batch bourbon.
Purchase: Dettling Bourbon is currently available for purchase in Alabama at Alabama ABC Liquor Stores and select states at retail locations, including Bambooze Fine Wine and Liquor in Florida.
Alaska: Port Chilkoot Distillery Green Siren Absinthe
This modern absinthe is based on a recipe from the 1700s and is made with no artificial colors or added sugars. Instead, distillers double-soak the spirit with southeastern Alaskan herbs like wormwood, lemon balm, and anise hyssop.
Price: $40 for a 375-ml bottle.
Purchase: Green Siren Absinthe is available in Alaska at select locations listed here.
Arizona: Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.’s Salome Saison
As its name suggests, this brewery, which has two locations in the Phoenix metropolitan area, is inspired by Arizona’s landscape and incorporates Arizona-grown citrus into its brews. Salome Saison uses Arizona-grown lemons alongside other pink peppercorns and faro. The result is an aromatic, earthy, and slightly tart beer — the perfect refresher for a hot desert night.
Price: $6.50 for a pint.
Purchase: In order to try this beer, you’ll have to visit Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.’s brewpub in Gilbert or its downtown Phoenix beer garden.
Arkansas: Post Familie Vineyards Muscadine Wine
The Post family has been providing Arkansas residents with sweet Muscadine wine since the 1800s and is now the state’s largest commercial winery. It even offers overnight stays for those interested in exploring Arkansas’ wine trail, and sells plenty of fresh grape juice if you’re stocking up on mixers.
Price: $7.99 for a 750-ml bottle.
Purchase: Post Familie Vineyards Muscadine wine is available in select locations you can view here.
California: Drake’s Brewing Co’s Cherryland
Located in San Francisco’s East Bay, Drake’s uses local Russian heirloom black cherries to produce this hard-hitting (8.3 percent ABV!), oak-barrel-aged American sour beer. Almost two pounds of cherries go into every gallon of beer, and it has notes of almond, dark fruit, and wheat malt.
Price: $15.99 for a 500-ml bottle.
Purchase: Available seasonally at Drake’s Brewing locations throughout the San Francisco area as well as select bars and stores in California, such as Hog’s Apothecary and BevMo!. A full list of locations can be found here.
Colorado: Rising Sun Distillery Colorado Chili Spirit
This distillery hand-processes and cold-steeps fresh Mirasol chilis from Hobbs Family Farm into a gently spicy liqueur. It’s a smooth sipper or an excellent addition to a Margarita.
Price: $22.99 for a 375-ml bottle.
Purchase: Rising Sun Distillery Colorado Chili Spirit is available at select locations in Colorado and can be purchased here.
Connecticut: Hartford Flavor Company Wild Moon Birch Liqueur
The sap of New England birch trees, which some believe naturally cleanses the body, adds sweet, spicy notes to this liqueur, which also has root beer and vanilla flavors.
Price: $19.99 for a 375-ml bottle.
Purchase: Wild Moon Birch Liqueur can be purchased online here.
Delaware: Off the Hoof Scrapple Flavored Vodka
Scrapple is a popular Delaware breakfast meat — and divisive delicacy. If you really want to go whole hog in Delaware, try this small-batch vodka that combines the flavors of pork, corn, apples, and spices. Sound strange? Sure. Then again, an awful lot of people are drinking bacon-washed bourbon.
Price: $23.99 for a 750-ml bottle.
Purchase: Off the Hoof Scrapple Flavored Vodka can be purchased online here.
Florida: St. Augustine Distillery Florida Cane Vodka
This distillery in America’s oldest city hand-cuts its spirits and uses locally grown sugarcane to give it flavor. The resulting spirit has notes of green apple, white pepper, and molasses.
Price: $28.98 for a 750-ml bottle.
Purchase: St. Augustine Distillery Florida Cane Vodka is currently available for purchase only in Florida.
Georgia: Anything from Creature Comforts Brewing Co.
This Athens-based operation is a fiercely local, nationally revered brewery. Exclusively available in-state, it’s available in Athens, Atlanta, Columbus, and Augusta. Its top-rated beer is Tropicália, an IPA named for a Brazilian arts movement.
Price: From $10.49 for a 6-pack of Tropicália.
Purchase: Creature Comforts beers are available in select bars and retailers.
Hawaii: Volcano Winery Infusion Tea Wine
Where there’s a volcano, there’s good soil, and this winery on the Big Island is taking advantage of everything Hawaii’s tropical climate offers. The winery’s Infusion blend incorporates locally sourced ingredients like black tea and macadamia nut honey, the result of which is like drinking a smooth, sweet tea that just so happens to have booze in it.
Price: $36 for a 375-ml bottle.
Purchase: Volcano Winery Infusion tea wine is available for purchase in select states here.
Idaho: Grand Teton Huckleberry Vodka
Huckleberries, an Idahoan delicacy akin to very sour blueberries, are only harvestable from August to September, and they tend to grow in limited quantities. Grand Teton infuses this vodka with freshly picked huckleberries for 12 weeks, giving the spirit a perfect sweet-sour balance.
Price: $15.99 for a 375-ml bottle.
Purchase: Grand Teton Huckleberry Vodka can be purchased here.
Illinois: Quincy Street Distillery Prairie Sunshine
Quincy Street uses goldenrod honey from northern Illinois to make this unusual spirit distilled from mead, the ancient honey wine. The spirit is fermented before it is distilled, and ultimately resembles rum — but with a distinct honeyed finish.
Price: $54.99 for a 750-ml bottle.
Purchase: Quincy Street Distillery Prairie Sunshine is available in select locations and can be purchased online here.
Indiana: Old 55 Distillery’s Sweet Corn Bourbon
Sweet, farm-fresh corn is harvested, hand-cut, and distilled in this 100 percent Hoosier State-made bourbon. The sweet corn gives the bourbon a sweeter, softer taste with notes of caramel and banana, as opposed to the spice of a rye or wheated bourbon.
Price: $139.00 for a 750-ml bottle.
Purchase: Old 55 Distillery is available in select locations and can be purchased online here.
Iowa: Mississippi River Distilling Company Iowish Cream Liqueur

Price: $21.99 for a 750-ml bottle.
Purchase: Mississippi River Distilling Company Iowish Cream Liqueur can be purchased online.

Price: $29.99 for a 750-ml bottle.
Purchase: Till Wheat Vodka is available for purchase online in select areas you can view here.
Kentucky: Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale
Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company celebrates Kentucky’s bourbon heritage with an array of bourbon barrel-aged beers. Its flagship Kentucky Ale rests in charred bourbon barrels for at least six weeks, imparting vanilla and oak flavors.
Price: $12.99 for a 12-ounce 4-pack.
Purchase: Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is available for purchase in select locations and online here.
Louisiana: Bayou Spiced Rum
This spiced rum incorporates local sugarcane and molasses, and rests for up to 30 days with Creole baking spices. Prefer to eat your sugar and spice? The distiller teamed up with local chef John Folse to create a special rum cake recipe, too.
Price: $23.99 for a 750-ml bottle.
Purchase: Bayou Spiced Rum can be purchased online here.
Maine: Oxbow Brewing Co. Saison Dell’Aragosta
Beer and lobster are a classic summertime pairing in Maine; renowned Newcastle brewer Oxbow decided to take it one step further by brewing this crisp, gose-style beer with fresh local lobsters. “There’s a little bit of sweetness from the lobster that provides a nice balance,” Oxbow head brewer Tim Adams told The Boston Globe. “But when you pour yourself a glass of this beer, you’d never say, ‘Oh my God, this tastes like lobster.’ It is really more of a background note, which is probably a good thing.”
Price: $13.35 for a 500-ml bottle.
Purchase: Oxford Brewing Co’s Saison Dell’Aragosta can be purchased at select bars and retailers in the New England area, including Gordon’s Wine.
Maryland: Flying Dog’s Old Rise Summer Ale

Purchase: Mystic Brewery beers are available in its taproom and select locations in the New England area.
Michigan: Traverse City Whiskey Co. Premium Cocktail Cherries

Nebraska: Lazy RW Frontier Straight Whiskey
Run by a father-and-son team, this small-batch distillery uses Nebraska’s best-known crop, corn, plus a secret Prohibition-era family recipe to make straight corn whiskey.
Price: From $26.99 for a 750-ml bottle.
Purchase: Lazy RW Frontier Straight Whiskey is currently available at the distillery and at select locations in Nebraska.

Price: $29.99 for a 750-ml bottle.
Purchase: Seven Troughs Old Commissary Whiskey can be purchased online.
