do you have any favourite historical overviews or introductions to christian mysticism that you could please recommend? ilysm habibti
works marked with * are what i would recommend for absolute beginners on the topic.
introductory works:
thomas merton, a course in christian mysticism: thirteen sessions ith the famous trappist monk*
william a. richards, sacred knowledge: psychadelics and religious experiences (on the practical applications of entheogenic, or drug-induced, mysticism)
william james, the varieties of religious experience, especially lectures 16 and 17*
bernard mcginn, the essentials of christian mysticism (arguably the best starter anthology of christian mystical writing)*
mircea eliade, the sacred and the profane
robert s. ellwood, mysticism and religion*
ed. amy hollywood, the cambridge companion to christian mysticism*
steven t. katz (ed.), mysticism and sacred scripture, especially the first chapter, "mysticism and the interpretation of sacred scripture," and the second chapter, "mysticism and scriptural justification"
primary works:
anon, the cloud of unknowing and other works (a.c. sperings translation for penguin is probably the most accessible)
teresa of avila, the life of saint tereesa of avila by herself
simone weil, waiting for god*
julian of norwich, revelations of divine love*
john of the cross, spiritual canticle (i recommend this to newcomers to christian mysticism over dark night of the soul, which is extremely dense and often devastating)
meister eckhart's sermons- though the book i'm linking is essentially a primer to german mystics
hildegard of bingen's scivias; but this selected works is a good place to start
margery kempe, the book of margery kempe by herself*
bernard of clairvaux’s sermons on song of songs*
marguerite porete, the mirror of simple souls
rebecca jackson, gifts of power*
catherine of siena, dialog
secondary works:
evelyn underhill, mysticism: a study in the nature and development of spiritual consciousness
evelyn underhill, practical mysticism*
caroline walker bynum, jesus as mother: studies in the spirituality of the high middle ages
caroline walker bynum, wonderful blood: theology and practice in late medieval northern germany and beyond
caroline walker bynum, holy feast and holy fast: the religious significance of food to medieval women*
grace m. jantzen, "eros and the abyss: reading medieval mystics in postmodernity"
grace m. jantzen, becoming divine: towards a feminist philosophy of religion
denys turner, the darkness of god: negativity in christian mysticism
jeffrey kripal, roads of excess palaces of wisdom: eroticism and reflexivity in the study of mysticism (+a lecture by him)
marsha aileen hewitt, freud on religion*
sarah clairmont, "she'll eat him up she loves him so" (one of my all time favourite papers)
also, the bible: which is probably the most vital of works on christian mysticism, as nothing you read about mysticism will not be influenced by it. i personally have recently been reading a combination of the JPS tanakh and the jewish annotated new testament, but the new revised standard edition (+apocrypha) is generally standard. if you are reading the bible academically for learning about mysticism, or have absolutely no background with reading the bible, i recommend the following books specifically:
the torah (genesis*, exodus*, leviticus, numbers, deuteronomy*)
the major prophets isaiah* and ezekiel*
the minor prophets (all of which constitute my favourite part of the bible) joel*, jonah*, micah*, malachai*
psalms*, job*, the song of songs*
the gospels, especially mark* and john (mark is the oldest and most "jewish," john is the most recent and most "gentile"; matthew and luke are probably more familiar than both)
the epistles: james*, jude*, 1-3 john, 1-2 peter, hebrews
the revelation to john
everything i've recommended here you can find online (internet archive or annasarchive); i've also tried to keep it extremely general and limited to work that i've personally read and vetted. if there's specific aspects or topics you're interested in (ie women's mysticism, medieval mysticism, mysticism and eating, freud and mysticism, commentaries on specific mystics etc) just drop me an ask! very honoured you've asked me beloved <3

I’m sorry if you’ve already done this, but what’s the general plot of your upcoming fics by title? I can’t wait to read them 🫶
I only have two upcoming fics actually in progress right now and I am happy to talk about them a bit!
A Momentary Radiance - RadioApple For a while I just called this the Southern Gothic. It's another canon-adjacent Alastor-meets-Lucifer-before-he-dies AU. In the wake of his mother's death and struggling in just about every way, Alastor lands on the unhinged idea of making a deal with the devil, and sells Lucifer his soul. Seven years later, the father who never acknowledged him has died, leaving behind a legitimate family that Alastor decides it's time to meet. There's a Southern Gothic trope of the malevolent stranger, who seems good but has evil intentions and brings ruin to a family, and I'm playing on that. Add in the romance between Alastor and Lucifer and we should have a good time together!
And all disastrous things - Alacest The one-shot that has possessed me and is being written right now so I can move on with my week. Human!Alastor with demon!Alastor, and a dash of the shadow. It has no plot, I explain nothing, and it's mostly sex. But the western fandom is really sleeping on Alacest and I am doing my part for the cause. You guys trust me, right? Have I ever steered you wrong before? That's what I thought.
If you're curious at all about the titles, A Momentary Radiance comes from a piece of stage direction in Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie ("like a piece of translucent glass touched by light, given a momentary radiance, not actual, not lasting").
"And all disastrous things" is a fragment plucked from A.C. Swinburne's poem "The Garden of Proserpine". It fits the vibe.
I hope you enjoy the stories when they're out! <3

Born on the fifth day of the seventh moon of the year 117 a.c., Violet Vance is the fifth child of Lord Triston Vance and Lady Roslin Vance. As the daughter of one of the most ambitious couples of the realm, it wasn't a surprise when the youngest girl of the Vance house was betrothed to Prince Viserys Targaryen, Queen Rhaenyra's second youngest son. She is very close with her eldest sister, Lacey, who is always quick to praise her talent for sewing embroidery, which she shares with most of the women in her family, though her sisters and mother have remarked she may one day be the best of all of them. It is often claimed she comes off far beyond her years, with her great love of learning and her nose is always stuck in a book; the main passion she shares with her betrothed and one of her best friends, Prince Vis. Violet is easily the most extroverted of her family and has had a talent to charm almost everyone around her, She is particularly close with her two eldest siblings, Ser Willam and Lady Lacey, as well as Queen Rhaenyra's children, as all three of them were raised at court due to her mother, Roslin being Queen Rhaenyra's longest serving Lady in Waiting. She thrives in the busy enviornment of King's Landing's court, and has served as the cupbearer for the now Crown-Prince Jacaerys Velaryon-Targaryen, for the past three years. Due to her extroverted personality, Violet is a very popular friend amongst her peers, but foremost amongst them is Marla Grafton, the youngest child of Lord Willum and Lady Cissy, and since Marla's older brother Ser Robin is bethroded to Violet's older sister Lady Lacey, as well as being best friends, they'll be good sisters when her siblings marry. Despite her young age, she is perhaps a little too perceptive for everyone's comfort, and at times doesn't know when it's best to leave a remark unsaid, leading to the refrain that Violet is too clever for her own good. Suggested faceclaim: Georgie Henley in The Narnia Chronicles
Note: Character traits, faceclaim, and details are suggestions and can be reworked to a certain extent if discussed with the current members of the RP!
Violet is particularly wanted by her mother, Lady Roslin Vance, eldest brother, Ser William, and eldest sister, Lady Lacey, as well as by Prince Vis, Princess Rhaena, Prince Joffrey, Jocie Connington, and Princess Visenya

hits your mid naughties british police drama with my warrior-cats-ification beam
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
some extra notes and that under the cut
Naming
Fits a couple categories
1) Follows their initials (Annie - Asphodelcreep, Chris - Cressstrike)
2) already sounds like their name (Ray - Starlingclaw)
3) Name already works as a prefix (Gene - Huntstar)
4) was gonna follow the initials route but I couldn't find owt I liked so went with somet else (Sam - Sandmartinpelt)
Onto individual designs
Sam | Sandmartinpelt
Wanted to get the jacket into his design in some way, as well as his sideburns
his 06 design has a dorsal stripe of the second darkest colour for 73 with his tail then being solidly that colour too
the lines down from his eyes are, tbh, purely there as I felt his face were too bland without - I couldn't think what other design would go
Will probably make his face rounder in the future and his side burns shorter
The prefix 'Sandmartin' is because you can shorten it to 'San' which is close enough to Sam for me, as well as take 'Mar' from the middle, a nice little nod to why Sam Williams was originally under cover in LoM
backstory does actually translate over well into - was leader of the Clan, hit by a car, wakes up in the past not as the clans leader
Is demoted down further than just one step tho - is a warrior in 73 - explained in Hunt's bit
Gene | Huntstar
His surname can already translate over into a wc prefix - so Huntstar
Took me the longest to design, mainly just cos I kept making him too light and having to go mess around with the values
only one I have a specific breed in mind for - Maine Coon
The scar on his leg is from 'getting shot' in the finale (obviously tho in this case he wasn't shot, probably mauled by dogs or somet)
bobtailed just cos he has them vibes yknow
The stripes going horizontal from his eyes are meant to contrast to Sam's going down vertical
dark front paws = driving gloves
Was deputy to Woolf, becomes leader after what would be 2x02, makes Sam his deputy
Annie | Asphodelcreep
Was always gonna be a black and white cat, somet that has just not changed at all since I started designing them
one of the cats that is just all fluff yknow
former kittypet - her home was near the clans territory and was something like a daylight warrior, her becoming a DC in 2x01 is her becoming a warrior full time in this
collar was red like her dress in 1x08
arguably the design I am most happy with and probably wont change at all
Name chosen mainly cos her initials are A.C. and I wanted it to match
Chris | Cressstrike
The prefix 'cress' was chosen cos it sounds like Chris and that is it
Is either the Clan's youngest warrior at the time Sam arrives, or one of the older apprentices who is massively struggling with Sam then taking over being his mentor (taken from Chris referring to Sam as a mentor in A2A)
Had to redo his entire design cos I accidentally made it piss ugly
Ray | Starlingclaw
Carling - Starling, it was low hanging fruit
Gene's former apprentice, I think it fits their dynamic well, especially Gene saying 'these men think they're made in my image' (paraphrasing) in 1x07
Curly fur cos I'm obsessed with his fucking perm in A2A
Will make him stockier and a more similar stature to Gene in the future
I think the antagonistic, generic brown tabby thing wcs does fits him well, like yeahh thats him

Star Wars rambles ...
Condensing all these thoughts down into cohesive, cogent statements is proving difficult, so I'll just let the thoughts be disjointed and jagged if they must.
I like best when Star Wars stories are either 1. quintessentially "Star Wars" (capturing the feel of the original trilogy and/or the best and brightest parts of its expanded mythos), 2. what could be called "Star Wars beyond just the Jedi vs Sith", 3. what could be called "Star Wars with a genre twist".
The first has the magic and sparkle that made the original trilogy instant classics; when I find one of those, it resonates like John Williams truly epic music in my soul. The second expands the Galaxy, so that it feels like more is happening in than a simple albeit eternal struggle of Light vs Dark; as if there truly is a galaxy with worlds and worlds beyond two religious/wizard factions, full of different people with different histories and motivations. People who live in the shades of gray between Light and Dark. And the third basically gets to ask the intersting question "What would it look like if we applied [genre] rules to Star Wars?" And I like interesting questions, what with them being so interesting.
For the first, the video game "Jedi: Fallen Order" is a magnificent example. In no small part thanks to its stirring music score, which really does capture the vibe of Williams' work. But playing as an almost lone survivor trying to rediscover his connection to the Force while scrambling "Uncharted" style around ancient ruins, resisting an Evil Empire with an unlikely team of ragtag rebels ... It's superb, nothing less. So are many (though not all) of the arcs in the show "The Clone Wars" and "Star Wars: Rebels". We get to see the Jedi being what we know Jedi ought to be. Paragons striving towards ideals, people with strengths and flaws, characters struggling to hold to the Light while living in Dark Times. Likewise, "Star Wars: Brotherhood" gives us Obi-Want and Anakin working together at their prime. We get to see them actually kicking ass and taking names, striving for diplomatic and peaceful solutions, and being the kind of people for whom a falling out in "Revenge of the Sith" really would be a tragedy (plus, the RotS novel makes that actually feel--psychologically and emotionally--like a tragedy so much better than the lamentably lacluster movie ever did). Meanwhile, the Darth Bane trilogy and "Darth Plaguies" novel gaves us the reciprocal side of the story. The flipside to the Jedi in the Sith actually being dark and deceptive, maniacal and manipulative.
For the second, I think "Rogue One" is the best example (film or novel) along with its prequel novel "Catalyst" about Galen Erso coming to be involved with the Death Star project. The Force is on the periphery of the story, yes, and Vader makes a truly terrifying appearance in it. But otherwise, it's all "normal" people living in this universe, struggling against an Evil Empire. The "Republic Commando" novels are also fantastic, focusing on the lives both internal and external of several Clone Troopers during the Clone Wars. Jedi are present, but it's largely not about them; it's about black ops soldiers, it's about characters who were bred essentially as war slaves learning to live as and for themselves. So is the Han Solo trilogy by A.C. Crispin, which follows Han's life up until his appearance in "A New Hope". And gives a look into the seedy, drug-running underbelly of the Galaxy. The life and times of smugglers and itineret pilots just trying to get by. The first two seasons of "The Mandalorian" of course gives us insight into the culture of the Mandalorians circa the original trilogy. And bounty hunters in general. All in a way that offers a compelling story of a lonely man becoming a father.
The third category has some wild examples out there, all of which are enjoyable in ways as varies as the stories themselves. "Shatterpoint" is basically a Vietnam War novel (starring Mace Windu living up to his reputation as a badass Master worthy of his seat on the council). "Andor" is a spy series, and "A New Dawn" is a stand-alone spy novel that leads in to "Star Wars: Rebels". The trilogy for "Thrawn: Ascendancy" are almost military-based political thrillers (with lots of action and intrigue). While the High Republic series is, overall, something of a disappointment (it's not bad, but it feels like it should've been great, mostly settling into standard, mediocre fare for Star Wars), the first half of "Light of the Jedi" reads like a disaster response novel. And it's *amazing*, I think. similiarly, "The Fallen Star" reads almost like a slasher thriller, and is quite compelling for that reason. And who could forget the darkly zany fun that is "Death Troopers", the Star Wars take on a zombie apocalypse (featuring Han Solo and Chewbacca)?
Anyway ... This is harld comprehensive, but relistening to "Shatterpoint" made me yearn to yap. Hopefully whoever reads this will have found it entertaining, and maybe even gleaned some show and book recommendations. Either way ...

2024 Academy Award Best Picture Nominees Guide For Those Who Haven’t Actually Watched Them
In a year when the names of pretty much every movie are combinations of random, non-descript words, and with a lineup of films that few people did actually watch or even legitimately know what they’re about (except Barbenheimer) - the Academy really tested the flimsy premise of this now decade-old bit.
But tis the season! So sing along with me! My awards have a first name, it’s O-S-C-A-R!
My awards have a second name, it’s C-O-R-P-O-R-A-T-E-H-O-L-L-Y-W-O-O-D-W-I-L-L-S-O-O-N-B-R-E-A-K-I-T-S-P-R-O-M-I-S-E-T-O-T-H-E-U-N-I-O-N-S-A-N-D-C-R-E-A-T-E-A-L-L-O-F-T-H-E-S-E-M-O-V-I-E-S-W-I-T-H-A-I-I-N-T-H-E-F-U-T-U-R-E!
So, let’s dive in for this 10th rundown of the Best Picture nominees!
Tumblr media
American Fiction
What Florida Governor Ron DeSantis calls critical race theory.
3 Things To Casually Inject Into Conversation To Prove You Saw The Movie And Sound Like An Expert:
German Fiction is what those who planned to vote for DeSantis call Zone of Interest.
If this wins, Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty will announce it as La La Land.
Tracee Ellis Ross plays the role of Dr. Lisa Ellison. Other original names for characters were Myra Lucretia Taylor as Dr. Mary Lucretiason, Michael Cyril Creighton as Dr. Thomas Cyrilson and Sterling K. Brown as Dr. William K.-son.
Anatomy of a Fall
About 6-foot-2 and roughly 200 pounds at the time that he slapped Chris Rock at this awards show in 2022.
3 Things To Casually Inject Into Conversation To Prove You Saw The Movie And Sound Like An Expert:
You know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris? They call it Anatomie D'Une Cheese.
I thought it was a bit lazy that in order to play the half-blind son, director Justine Triet just put an eye-patch on Milo Machado-Graner and exclaimed, “Mon Dieu! Ze garçon is now half blind. Voir!
Eric Clapton’s least favorite Best Picture nominee.
Barbie
A sharp and immensely profitable attack upon the patriarchy and a film that became a rallying cry for female empowerment in Hollywood that garnered no Best Director or Best Actress nominations but nabbed a nom for penis-owning actor Ryan Gosling.
3 Things To Casually Inject Into Conversation To Prove You Saw The Movie And Sound Like An Expert:
Hi Barbie!
One day during childhood, I agreed to play Barbies with my two sisters and my brother. But we played Saved By The Bell with Ken as Zack Morris, an Aladdin doll as A.C. Slater and various Barbies as Kelly, Jessie and Lisa. It was civil until I got bored and used another Ken doll to be Screech and all of a sudden gave him the power (ironically…Screech's last name was Powers) to fly and then pretended he was flying over the Dream House and farting and pooping down (also ironically in light of Dustin Diamond’s later activities) on everyone causing my sisters to scream at me while I cackled with laughter. Not really a joke. Just a real crystalized childhood memory that I'm sadly still kind of proud of and also still think is very funny.
Next year, the Polly Pocket movie will be a tremendous hit, break down traditional gender norms, and Austin Butler will be the only one nominated for an Oscar for playing Paul E. Pocket.
The Holdovers
A story about a group that has nowhere to go after they are abandoned in New England…the 2020 Patriots.
3 Things To Casually Inject Into Conversation To Prove You Saw The Movie And Sound Like An Expert:
The lead role called for a “stubborn, curmudgeonly” character and Paul Giamatti just materialized on set.
To achieve Giamatti’s character Paul Hunham’s trademark lazy eye, Alexander Payne enlisted the help of Anatomy of a Fall director Justine Triet who came on set and addressed Giamatti’s right eye, saying, “Bonjour, eye! Do some work, s'il vous plaît. (Pauses for a beat.) Sacre bleu! Ze eye refuses to work. Zis is a lazy eye!”
This is the first collaboration between director Alexander Payne and actor Paul Giamatti since Sideways which now makes sense since there are various points in the film where a character, with absolutely no context or prompting, sips a glass of merlot and spits it on the ground screaming, “Merlot is the worst liquid in the universe!” But it was a bit much when the last scene of the movie was Paul Giamatti looking directly into the camera and saying, “Fuck you, merlot,” before the credits rolled.
Killers of the Flower Moon
Ernest in the Army. Ernest Scared Stupid. Ernest Goes to Jail.
3 Things To Casually Inject Into Conversation To Prove You Saw The Movie And Sound Like An Expert:
Leonardo DiCaprio initially turned down the role when he learned that his romantic interest in the film, Mollie Kyle, was 137 years old, saying, "Maybe without the 7!"
IMDB lists this movie’s runtime in years.
Scorsese rejected composer Robbie Robertson’s first score for the film that included “‘Up on Cripple Creek…Is Where They Found Anna’s Body’”, “I Shall Be Released…Is What King Hale Tells Ernest While In Jail”, “The Weight…Of His Transgressions Caused Ernest to Testify Against His Uncle” and “Ophelia…Is Probably The Name of One of The Background Osage Women Characters, Oh Come On Marty, Just Put It In The Credits, People Love This Song”
Maestro
Seasoned musician Leonard Bernstein (Bradley Cooper) discovers-and falls in love with-struggling actress Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as an actress - until Leonard coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Felicia’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Leonard fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons. Then, he pisses his pants at the Grammys.
3 Things To Casually Inject Into Conversation To Prove You Saw The Movie And Sound Like An Expert:
Early critical reviews of the trailer focused on the “Anatomy of a Face”.
Just like in “A Star Is Born”, Bradley Cooper took vocal lessons to actually perform Leonard Bernstein's classic “Hallelujah”. (What’s that? There are two Jewish Leonards?)
Cooper spent nearly 45% of the film’s budget on that epic final battle scene between Bernstein and Lydia Tár.
Oppenheimer
Julius Robert Oppenheimer Schmidt! That's my name too! Whenever I got out, the people always shout, “There goes Julius Robert Oppenheimer Schmidt!” Na-na na-na na-na-na!
3 Things To Casually Inject Into Conversation To Prove You Saw The Movie And Sound Like An Expert:
In an alternate scene, it's revealed that the exchange between Oppenheimer and Edison by the pond that caused Albert to react so sadly when walking past Robert Downey Jr. is that Oppenheimer tried to sneak a fart but then said, “Oh no. I just Oppensharted.”
Nolan took some liberties with the true story. In reality, the U.S. killed between 110,000 and 210,000 Japanese citizens…with kindness.
Since ABC does not include the Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards during the broadcast, we will not see Cillian Murphy’s acceptance speech for Best Seated Mangina.
Past Lives
This film follows the stories of the characters’ souls across time, and the stories are interwoven as they advance, showing how they all interact in their “past lives”. The film explores how people's “past lives” are connected with and influence each other and…wait a second. Nope. That’s Cloud Atlas. (Do not watch Cloud Atlas.)
3 Things To Casually Inject Into Conversation To Prove You Saw The Movie And Sound Like An Expert:
Due to scheduling conflicts with Poor Things, Emma Stone was unable to play the female Asian lead this time.
However, in the North Korean version of the film, Kim Jong Un played the role. And all the other roles. And won all of the Oscars. Ever.
This movie is a prequel to the movie Lives.
Poor Things
From Pixar comes the story of little Sally Sangiovese, a newly bottled red Italian wine who is separated from her Sangio-family and sent to the wine cellar. There, she’ll befriend Nelson Nebbiolo, a wizened red from the Piedmont region who is coming up on 30 years in the cellar but still hasn’t gotten over the loss of his Spanish love, Tia Tempranillo, who was pulled from the cellar for a quinceañera dinner the year prior. Together, the two will hatch a plan to release themselves from the cellar to reunite Sally with her family and Nelson con su amor. Along their adventurous aging process, audiences will discover that even when the bottle appears half-empty, you simply decant dampen the spirit of these…Pour Things!
3 Things To Casually Inject Into Conversation To Prove You Saw The Movie And Sound Like An Expert:
Max McCandles was actually the original name of Lumière from Beauty and the Beast.
Unfortunately this story of a British woman receiving a brain transplant isn’t about J.K. Rowling.
This is the first movie written by new AI trained only on Dr. Seuss books, Kanye West’s Twitter feed and the dreams of Gary Busey.
The Zone of Interest
Rudolf the conflicted Nazi! Had a garden full of rows! Of plants his wife liked to tend to! Horrifically juxtaposed! Then one sunny German day, Hitler came to say, “Rudolf of the triple Reich, won't you Holocaust tonight!” Then, how he wrestled with morality! As he puked and thought, “Why me?!” Rudolf the conflicted Nazi! This one’s really hard for comedy!
3 Things To Casually Inject Into Conversation To Prove You Saw The Movie And Sound Like An Expert…All Word-for-Word What Was Generated by ChatGPT:
The popularity of the film has already led to a sequel, Höss Party 2.
Probably also the title of one of the Mission Impossible movies.
I actually did watch every other movie nominated for Best Picture this year, but The Zone of Interest is the only one I did Nazi!

Pedro II do Brasil (1825-1891). Último imperador do Brasil.
Cleópatra VII Filopator (69 a.C - 30 a.C).
Ricardo I (1157-1199).
Aconselho ver The Tudors.
Catarina de Médici (1519-1589)
Maria Antonieta (1755-1793).
Rei Sol.
Nefertiti (1370 a. C.-1330 a. C. - estimada). Descrita como a mais bela do mundo.
Mary Stuart (1542-1587)
Rei George III do Reino Unido (1738-1820).
