Suspended five games for selling their stuff: Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor, RB Daniel Herron, WR DeVier Posey, OT Mike Adams, and DE Solomon Thomas.

There have certainly been players who’ve gotten off light for actual offenses, and there have been coaches who’ve paid heavy prices for mistakes. Yep, Jim Tressel was outed for the first incident on this list -- outed for lying about it to the NCAA, that is.

But compare these harsh punishments for largely victimless transgressions with the one Meyer received for -- at absolute minimum -- doing very little to discipline a person making constant reckless choices. It’s clear, again and as always, that our sport’s system is far too lopsided in favor of successful coaches and far too concerned with things that don’t really matter, often at the expense of things that do.

Irene Cara

Irene Cara (born Irene Cara Escalera; March 18, 1959) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She is best known for her roles as title character Sparkle Williams in the 1976 film Sparkle and Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film Fame, earning her a Golden Globe nomination, and her recording of the song "Fame" became an international hit. Cara won an Academy Award in 1984 in the category of Best Original Song for co-writing "Flashdance... What a Feeling", which also became an international hit.

Early life

Cara was born in The Bronx, New York City, the youngest of five children. Her father, Gaspar Escalera, a factory worker and retired saxophonist, was Afro-Puerto Rican, and her mother, Louise, a cinema usher, was an American of Cuban descent. Cara has two sisters and two brothers.

At the age of three, Irene Cara was one of five finalists for the "Little Miss America" pageant. She began to play the piano by ear, then studied music, acting, and dance seriously, first having dance lessons, aged five. Her performing career started on Spanish-language television, professionally singing and dancing. She made early TV appearances on the Original Amateur Hour (singing in Spanish) and Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show. In 1971–72, aged 13, she was a regular on PBS's educational program The Electric Company. As a child, Cara recorded a Latin-market Spanish-language record and an English Christmas album. She also appeared in a major concert tribute to Duke Ellington that also featured Stevie Wonder, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Roberta Flack.

Career

Cara appeared in on-and off-Broadway theatrical shows including the musicals Ain't Misbehavin', The Me Nobody Knows (which won an Obie Award), Maggie Flynn opposite Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy, and Via Galactica with Raúl Juliá.

Cara was the original Daisy Allen on the 1970s daytime serial Love of Life. Next came her role as Angela in romance/thriller Aaron Loves Angela, followed by her portrayal of the title character in Sparkle. Television brought Cara international acclaim for serious dramatic roles in two outstanding mini-series, Roots: The Next Generations and Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones.

John Willis' Screen World, Vol. 28, named her one of twelve "Promising New Actors of 1976"; that same year, a readers' poll in Right On! magazine named her Top Actress.

Cara graduated from the Professional Children's School in Manhattan.

Fame and international acclaim

The 1980 hit movie Fame, directed by Alan Parker, catapulted Irene Cara to stardom. Cara was originally cast as a dancer, but when producers David Da Silva and Alan Marshall and screenwriter Christopher Gore heard her voice, they re-wrote the role of Coco Hernandez. As Coco Hernandez, she sang both the title song "Fame" and the film's other single, "Out Here on My Own." These songs helped make the film's soundtrack a chart-topping, multi-platinum album. Further history was made at the Academy Awards that year: it was the first time two songs from the same film were nominated in the same category and both sung by the same artist. Thus, Cara had the opportunity to be one of the few singers to perform more than one song at the Oscar ceremony; "Fame," written by Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford, won the award that year.

Cara earned Grammy nominations in 1980 for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture Actress in a Musical. Billboard named her Top New Single Artist, while Cashbox Magazine awarded her both Most Promising Female Vocalist and Top Female Vocalist.

Asked by Fame TV series' producers to reprise her role as Coco Hernandez, she declined so as to focus her attention on her recording career. As a result, Erica Gimpel assumed the role.

Post-Fame career

Cara was slated to star in her own sitcom, Irene, on NBC in 1981. Even though the pilot aired and received favorable reviews, the network did not pick it up for its fall season. It also starred veteran performers Kaye Ballard and Teddy Wilson, as well as newcomers Julia Duffy and Keenen Ivory Wayans.

In 1983, Cara appeared as herself in the film D.C. Cab, which is a film about a group of cabbies. The movie stars Mr. T. One of the characters, Tyrone played by Charlie Barnett, is an obsessed Cara fan who decorated his Checker Cab as a shrine to her. Her contribution to the film's soundtrack, "The Dream (Hold on To Your Dream)" played over the closing credits of the film, and proved to be a minor hit, peaking at No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1984.

In 1982, Cara earned the Image Award for Best Actress when she co-starred with Diahann Carroll and Rosalind Cash in the NBC Movie of the Week, Maya Angelou's Sister, Sister. Cara portrayed Myrlie Evers-Williams in the PBS TV movie about civil rights leader Medgar Evers, For Us the Living: The Medgar Evers Story; and earned an NAACP Image Award Best Actress nomination. She also appeared in 1982's Killing 'em Softly.

In addition to her music and film work, Cara also continued to perform in live theatre during this period. In the summer of 1980, she briefly played the role of Dorothy in The Wiz on tour, in a role that Stephanie Mills had first portrayed in the original Broadway production. Coincidentally, Cara and Mills had shared the stage together as children in the original 1968 Broadway musical Maggie Flynn, starring Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy, in which both young girls played Civil War orphans.

In 1983, Cara reached the peak of her music career with the title song for the movie Flashdance: "Flashdance... What A Feeling", which she co-wrote with Giorgio Moroder and Keith Forsey. Cara penned the lyrics to the song with Keith Forsey while riding in a car in New York heading to the studio to record it; Moroder composed the music.

Cara admitted later that she was initially reluctant to work with Giorgio Moroder because she had no wish to invite further comparisons with another artist who worked with Moroder, Donna Summer. But the collaboration paid off and became a hit in several countries, garnering numerous accolades for Cara. She won the 1983 Academy Award for Best Song (Oscar), 1984 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, 1984 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, and American Music Awards for Best R&B Female Artist and Best Pop Single of the Year.

"Flashdance..." was re-recorded by Cara twice. The first time was in 1995 as a track in the original soundtrack for the movie "The Full Monty"; the second time was in 2002, as a duet she recorded with Swiss artist DJ BoBo.

In 1984, she was in the comedic thriller City Heat, in which she co-starred opposite Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds and sang the standards "Embraceable You" and "Get Happy." She also co-wrote the theme song "City Heat", which was sung by the jazz vocalist Joe Williams. In May of that year she scored her final Top 40 hit with "Breakdance" going to #8. The follow up, "You Were Made for Me" reached #78 that summer but then she never charted on the Hot 100 again. In 1985, Cara co-starred with Tatum O'Neal in Certain Fury, an exploitation underachiever about two troubled young women who flee a court hearing and are mistaken for killers. In 1986, Cara appeared in the film Busted Up. She also provided the voice of Snow White in the unofficial sequel to Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Filmation's Happily Ever After, in 1993. That same year, she appeared as Mary Magdalene in the record-breaking anniversary tour of Jesus Christ Superstar opposite Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, and Dennis DeYoung.

Along with her career in acting and hit singles, Cara released several albums: Anyone Can See in 1982, What A Feelin' in 1983, and Carasmatic in 1987, the most successful of these being What A Feelin. In 1985 she collaborated with the Hispanic group Hermanos in the song "Cantaré, cantarás," in which she sings a solo segment with the Spanish opera singer Plácido Domingo. She also released a compilation of Eurodance singles in the mid to late 1990s entitled Precarious 90's. Cara recently contributed a dance single, titled "Forever My Love", to the compilation album titled Gay Happening Vol. 12, in 2006.

Cara has also worked as a backup vocalist for Vicki Sue Robinson, Lou Reed, George Duke, Oleta Adams, and Evelyn "Champagne" King. Cara toured Europe and Asia throughout the 1990s, scoring several modest dance hits on European charts, but no US chart hits. Cara received two prestigious honors for her career in March 2004, with her induction into the Ciboney Cafe's Hall of Fame and a Lifetime Achievement Award presented at the sixth annual Prestige Awards.

In June 2005, Cara won the third round of the NBC television series Hit Me, Baby, One More Time, performing "Flashdance (What a Feeling)" and covered Anastacia's song "I'm Outta Love" with her current all-female band, Hot Caramel. At the 2006 AFL Grand Final in Melbourne, Cara performed "Flashdance (What a Feeling)" as an opener to the pre-match entertainment.

As of 2016, Cara divides her residence between New Port Richey, Florida and Santa Fe, New Mexico. She works with her band Hot Caramel, which she formed in 1999. Their album called Irene Cara Presents Hot Caramel was released on April 4, 2011. Cara appeared in season 2 of CMT's reality show Gone Country,.

Personal life

Cara married stuntman Conrad Palmisano in Los Angeles in April 1986 and they divorced in 1991.

BMI celebrated the songwriters, producers and publishers of the past year’s most-performed R&B/hip-hop songs during the 2019 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards held at the Sandy Springs Arts Center in Atlanta. Multiple-award-winning singer/songwriter and actress Brandy received the BMI President’s Award in recognition of her powerful impact on the entertainment industry and her timeless hits, which have secured her place in R&B history.

Hosted by BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill and BMI Vice President, Creative, Atlanta, Catherine Brewton, the evening included stellar performances by some of the hottest artists on the music scene. The ceremony kicked off with a moving tribute video in honor of the late rapper and activist Nipsey Hussle to celebrate his musical legacy and remarkable philanthropic work. Atlanta-based rapper Gunna followed with a medley of his biggest hits, ending with his smash “Drip Too Hard,” featuring Lil Baby, who joined him on stage for the performance. Afterwards, Gunna received a special award in recognition of the song garnering one billion streams. Television personality and comedian, DC Young Fly then presented Memphis rapper NLE Choppa with the 2019 BMI Social Star Award.

The evening also featured a series of special tributes to Brandy, beginning with contemporary R&B singer/songwriter Jade Novah performing a beautiful rendition of “Talk About Our Love.” The tributes continued with Samoht singing a stripped-down version of “Brokenhearted,” followed by gospel singer Kierra Sheard’s sultry performance of two of Brandy’s ballads, “Have You Ever” and “He Is.” Eric Bellinger rounded out the tributes with “Baby” and “Nothing” which had the audience singing along. Brandy’s brother, Ray J, took to the stage and serenaded his sister with “Best Friend” before she was presented with the BMI President’s Award. Brandy accepted the accolade with an impromptu performance, encouraged by the audience, of “I Wanna Be Down,” before singing her iconic hit “Almost Doesn’t Count.”

The event also honored the top producers and songwriters of the previous year’s 35 best-performing R&B/hip-hop songs in the U.S. from BMI’s repertoire of more than 14 million musical works. Wheezy Beatz tied for Producer of the Year with Tay Keith. Keith also received the coveted Songwriter of the Year award, an honor he shared with Post Malone, marking his second tie for the evening. Song of the Year went to “God’s Plan” by Yung Exclusive and Marciano and Sony/ATV was named Publisher of the Year for having 18 of the most performed songs of the year including “Sicko Mode,” “I Like It” and “In My Feelings.”

As the 2019 BMI President’s Award honoree, Brandy joins previous recipients Curtis Mayfield, Ludacris, Toni Braxton and Will.i.am, among others in sharing this distinction.

     War Eagle, everybody! It’s time now for the first Auburn game preview of the year! On August 31st, Auburn will travel to Arlington, Texas to take on Oregon in the season opener. These are a pair of dangerous, yet underachieving, teams that were close last year but did not crack the major bowl picture. Auburn exploded offensively in the Music City Bowl, while Oregon managed to hack out a 7–6 win over Michigan State in the Redbox Bowl in Santa Clara.

     Head coach Mario Cristobal has had an interesting career, becoming the first Cuban-American head coach in the FBS at Florida International, and delivered the team a Sun Belt title, before being fired a couple of years later. He was snapped up as the offensive line coach by Nick Saban at Alabama and produced some dominating lines. Cristobal left Alabama to take a co-offensive-coordinator spot at Oregon under coach Willie Taggart and coached in one bowl game. Taggart left to take the Florida State job, and Cristobal was elevated to head coach after just 1 game as an assistant.

     Last season, Oregon had some issues on defense and allowed over 20 points in every FBS game except in the season ending game against woeful Oregon State. The Ducks lost 4 games last season, and gave up over 30 in every one of the losses. Defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt left, and Coach Cristobal hired defensive coordinator Andy Avalos, who did a good job at Boise State. Avalos is installing a 3-3-5 defense. Oregon is loaded with veteran upper class defensive players, but sometimes the transition to that defense takes time.

     Oregon’s offense was good for much of the season behind an offensive line that mostly dominated Pac-12 defensive lines. The last time Auburn played Oregon, the story was a wide-open hurryup offense. Current Oregon offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo is much more deliberate, running a mix of pistol and shotgun sets with some jet motion. Oregon’s offense last season was an attempt at balance, handing off to a committee of running backs, and trying to get the ball to star receiver Dillon Mitchell. Unfortunately for Oregon, Mitchell is gone, and it will have to try and replace his 75 catches last season. Big quarterback Justin Herbert decided to return for his senior year, and he’s the prototypical tall, strong-armed quarterback NFL scouts are looking for. Dillon’s numbers could have been higher, but the offense was plagued at times by dropped passes.

     Oregon has a good punter in Blake Maimone, with a strong leg and good placement. Kicking was a bit more dicey with rising junior Adam Stack as he hit on only 6 of 10 field goal attempts. Like Auburn’s Anders Carlson, Stack tended to miss from long range. Oregon was average on kick coverage and pretty good on punt coverage last season.

     As of yet, neither team has decided on a punt returner, both having to replace departed seniors. Auburn has the edge in terms of kick returns as teams were deliberately kicking the ball away from Noah Igbinoghene by midseason.

     Last season, I pointed out that West Coast spring games tend to be rather lightly attended. Oregon is an exception. Over 35,000 fans turned up for the Duckfest this spring. The most notable thing about the spring game was the oft-maligned receiver corps did not drop a pass.

Auburn defensive line vs. Oregon offensive line: Many folks believe this is the money matchup of the game. Auburn brings back a big, athletic defensive line. Likely starters at tackle are senior Derrick Brown and junior Tyrone Truesdell. Senior strong-side end Marlon Davidson will be a 4-year starter. The buck side is a rotation between juniors Nick Coe and Big Kat Bryant. Auburn can play monster sophomore Nick Coe at any position on the line with great results. Auburn has serious depth all across the line as well. Some pundits claim that Oregon will have the best offensive line in the country. From left to right, that is sophomore Penei Sewell, senior Shane Lemeieux, senior Jake Hanson, senior Dallas Warmack, and senior Calvin Throckmorton. This is a veteran line that allowed just 22 sacks last season, despite the Ducks putting the ball in the air 418 times. Advantage: Even.

Auburn linebackers vs. Oregon backs: Auburn will be breaking in a new starting linebacker rotation, but there is a good bit of playing experience as these guys have been rotating for a couple of years. Auburn will go with junior K. J. Britt in the middle and some combination of junior Chandler Wooten and sophomore Zakoby McClain on the outsides. I would also expect true freshman Owen Pappoe to play early and often. Oregon rotates a couple of good backs. Sophomore C. J. Verdell rushed for 1,018 yards last season as a redshirt freshman. Sophomore Travis Dye added another 739 yards. Verdell caught 27 balls out of the backfield last season as well. Advantage: Even.

Auburn corners vs. Oregon receivers: Auburn has a fairly good combination of starting corners in senior Javaris Davis and junior Noah Igbinoghene . Auburn has depth and experience behind the starters. Oregon has loads of talent in the receiving corps, but they will have to step up this season. I look for sophomore Daewood Davis and junior Johnny Johnson III to start on the outside for the Ducks. Advantage: Even.

Auburn safeties vs. Oregon secondary receivers and quarterback: Auburn’s starting unit features Seniors Jeremiah Dinson and Daniel Thomas at safety. This is a veteran crew with experienced backups. I think Auburn would like to start sophomore Christian Tutt at the nickel spot. Senior Duck quarterback Justin Herbert is a good one and can make every throw. Behind a good offensive line, Herbert can really throw the ball around, throwing for 29 touchdowns and only 8 interceptions last season. Junior Jalen Redd Jones is expected to be the starting slot receiver, and senior Jacob Breeland should start at tight end. Advantage: Even.

Punting: Aaron Siposs had a good rookie campaign punting the football (averaging 44.2 yards per punt) and is expected to be one of the better punters in the SEC this season. Likewise, Oregon returns senior punter Blake Maimone, who averaged 42.5 yards per punt last season. Auburn improved dramatically in coverage last season (3.36 yards per return), and Oregon was good, allowing 7.4. Advantage: Auburn.

Kickoffs: Auburn sophomore Anders Carlson had a great year kicking off, last season, hitting 51 touchbacks on 70 kickoffs. When Carlson didn’t kick it to the end zone, Auburn gave up only 19.44 yards per return. Junior Oregon kicker Adam Stack takes over as the kickoff man this season. Last year, he had 4 kickoffs and zero touchbacks. Oregon gave up 22.7 yards per kick return. Advantage: Auburn.

Place kicking: Auburn sophomore Daniel Carlson hit on just 15 of 25 field goal attempts and was 5 of 14 from 40 yards or more. Adam Stack hit on 6 of 10 field goal attempts last season and was 0 for 2 from long range. Advantage: Auburn.

Auburn offensive line vs. Oregon defensive line: Auburn has 5 veteran seniors returning on the offensive line, and they looked very good in the Music City Bowl and on A-Day. From left to right, it will be Prince Tega Wanogho, Marquel Harrell, Kaleb Kim, Mike Horton and Jack Driscoll. Oregon will use a 3-man line with junior Jordan Scott anchoring the middle. Junior Austin Faoliu and senior Gary Baker will handle the end spots. Oregon will rotate seniors Gus Cumberlander and Drayton Carlberg extensively. The book on beating the 3-3-5 defense is to run right at the 3-man line and get offensive linemen to the second level, creating mismatches against defensive backs and linebackers. The key to Auburn’s success on offense will be whether these Oregon guys can force Auburn to have to double-team block them. I don’t think they can. Advantage: Auburn.

Auburn backs vs. Oregon linebackers: Auburn lost H-back Chandler Cox, a 4-year starter who blew open holes. The real question is who will replace Cox. Right now, senior Spencer Nigh is the only fullback/H-back listed on the roster. Sophomore John Samuel Schenker is likely to get work here as well. Senior Kam Martin is blazing fast but has had durability issues in the past. Sophomore JaTarvious Whitlow took over the top spot last year and is said to be much improved this spring. Senior Malik Miller has size, power, and a few carries here and there but hasn’t been used much. Auburn will face a good, well-coached linebacking corps. Projected to start on the inside are senior Troy Dye and junior Samson Niu. On the outside edges, expect to see senior Lamar Winston, Jr. and sophomore Adrian Jackson. This is a tough matchup for Oregon as linebackers typically have the most trouble converting to this sort of defensive system. Advantage: Auburn.

Auburn receivers vs. Oregon corners: Auburn is moving sophomore Seth Williams to the boundary (X) side of the offense, and the likely starter in the flanker spot is either redshirt freshman Matthew Hill or junior Marquis McClain. While Auburn is young here, Oregon is veteran and capable at cornerback. Juniors Thomas Graham, Jr. and Deommodore Lenior have been there, done that. Advantage: Oregon.

Auburn secondary receivers and quarterback vs. Oregon safeties: All eyes will be on a new Auburn starting freshman quarterback. Whether that will be Joey Gatewood or Bo Nix has yet to be determined. I would expect Oregon to try to go after these guys and cause confusion in the backfield. Auburn has a very speedy and dangerous group of secondary receivers, including junior Eli Stove, senior Will Hastings, and sophomore Anthony Schwartz. Auburn can put big senior receiver Sal Cannella in and get a size mismatch. Oregon’s safeties return from last season, sophomore Jevon Holland and junior Nick Pickett. I think Auburn can create some mismatches in space, but can freshmen quarterbacks take advantage? Advantage: Oregon.

     I believe that Auburn must keep this a low-scoring game to have a chance on the fast track in the domed stadium. Offensively, Auburn has so many questions at this point. There is talent across the board, but will it be a polished product on September 1st? History says no. Only once in 6 years has the Gus Malzahn offense come out of the gate firing on all cylinders, and that was in 2014 with a 45–21 pasting of Arkansas. In 2013, Auburn struggled to move on a bad Wazzu defense. In 2015 against Louisville, Jeremy Johnson led the nation in interceptions. In 2016, Auburn tried to run the single wing against Clemson’s 8-man fronts. In 2017, Auburn struggled with sacks and hamstrings against Georgia Southern, which turned out to be a really bad team that year. Auburn sputtered against Washington last season in Atlanta. There’s not enough sunshine for me to pump on this subject. I’d love to be proven wrong by the Auburn players and coaches!

     On the other hand, there is a great deal of criticism on the Oregon side about the play calling of Oregon offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo, who is said to be too predictable. I’m not sure I buy it. Footage of the Redbox Bowl was pretty dreadful, but I had more issues with execution than with play calling. Michigan State also showed a good defense in that game. I saw dropped passes. The Spartans would blitz, and the Ducks couldn’t pick it up in the backfield. Sometimes the Ducks had good play calls to take advantage of alignments, and a missed block or two would kill it.

Prediction: Auburn had a virtual home game against Washington last season in Atlanta. The Ducks travel well, and I expect the crowd in Texas to be much more evenly split. It is hard to pick Auburn to win with a freshman quarterback in this game. Auburn falls, 31–27.

“The truth is that actors don’t really have any control earlier mentioned the end product. To think that you have control is a delusion and it’s also surprisingly frustrating to be investing that much hope into something that essentially boils down to marketing. So you try to do movies that you come to feel connected with and you work with directors and actors you admire.” Gabriel Byrne.

Originally desiring to be a priest but later was expelled from an English seminary, Gabriel Byrne then relocated to Ireland and did a string of odd jobs like a cook, a bullfighter, a teddy-bear-eye installer, an archaeologist and a Spanish and Gaelic teacher at a Catholic girls school. Meanwhile, he began participating in amateur theater and then joined with local theaters in Dublin, the Focus Theatre, an experimental repertory company run by future filmmaker Jim Sheridan, and the Abbey Theatre (for two years).

In 1965, Byrne won the regular role of Pat Barry in the long-running Irish soap opera “The Riordans” and reprised his role in its spin-off series “Bracken” (1978), which nabbed him a Jacob’s Awards for Best Actor in a TV Series – Drama. He also debuted in the British feature On a Paving Stone Mounted and was cast in the US-Netherlands drama co-production “The Outsider” (starring an aged Sterling Hayden).

Byrne headed to London in 1979 and signed up with the Royal Court and the National Theatre. He subsequently scored his very first significant role as Arthurâ€s father, Uther Pendragon, in John Boormanâ€s classic King Arthur epic based on Thomas Maloryâ€s book, Excalibur (1981, starring Nicol Williamson and Nigel Terry). Besides acting in the miniseries “The Search for Alexander the Great” (1981) and “Wagner” (1983), as well as the TV movie Joyce in June (1982), Byrne appeared in the 1983 films like Robert Biermanâ€s The Rocking Horse Winner, Constantin Costa-Gavras’ Hanna K. and Michael Mann’s The Keep.

After starring in Kevin Billingtonâ€s adaptation of John Banvilleâ€s novel, the romantic drama Reflections (1984), Byrne played the lead role of a young reporter for a British daily cleanspaper, Nicholas ‘Nick’ Mullen, in David Druryâ€s political thriller, Defense of the Realm (1985, costarring Greta Scacchi and Denholm Elliott). He then portrayed the title role of Christopher Columbus in the CBS-TV widely received miniseries with the same name and became Mussolini’s son Vittorio in the NBC miniseries “Mussolini: The Untold Story” (both in 1985).

Before moving to New York City, Byrne starred as Lord Byron in Ken Russell’s biopic drama Gothic (1986) and took home an International Fantasy Film Award for Best Actor. In the subsequent year, he landed roles as merciless slaver Black Prince in Franklin J. Schaffnerâ€s Lionheart: The Children’s Crusade (alongside Eric Stoltz) and as Kathleen Turnerâ€s husband in Peter Del Monteâ€s Italian drama Julia and Julia. He was also cast in films like Shelley Long supernatural comedy vehicle Hello Again (1987), Mary Lambertâ€s screen version of Patrice Chaplinâ€s novel, the ambitious thriller Siesta (also in 1987, opposite future wife Ellen Barkin) and Frank Deasyâ€s action The Courier (1988).

Larry Parr then handed him the leading role of a British soldier who is fighting in the trenches of France during World War II in his drama movie based on the novel by M.K. Joseph, A Soldier’s Tale (1988, costarring Marianne Basler) and Nick Broomfield gave him the starring role of Hugo, a heir to a fortune who is married to Amanda Donohoe, in his psychodrama film Diamond Skulls (1989).

In the early 1990s, Byrne became a cool-headed enigmatic organized crime lieutenant in the Coen brothers’ stylized feature Miller’s Crossing and was featured as a fierce pirate in Nils Gaupâ€s adaptation of O.V. Falck-Ytterâ€s book, Hakon Hakonsen (a.k.a. Shipwrecked). He then both assisted as associate producer and starred in Mike Newellâ€s Into the West (1992) and worked as executive producer in Jim Sheridanâ€s acclaimed movie In the Name of the Father (1993, starring Daniel Day-Lewis).

Byrne next portrayed a comic book artist who designed and then is seduced by Kim Basinger in Ralph Bakshi’s fusion of animation and live-action Cool World (1992) and played a government agent who trains Bridget Fonda’s convicted murderer to be a hired assassin in John Badham’s remake of French director Luc Besson’s La Femme Nikita, Point of No Return (1993). He also co-starred as an itinerant handyman in Stephen Gyllenhaal’s A Dangerous Woman (1993, with Debra Winger and Barbara Hershey) and landed featured roles in such films as All Things Bright and Beautiful, Royal Deceit, A Simple Twist of Fate, Trial by Jury, Little Women and Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man.

Along with Kevin Spacey, Benicio Del Toro, Kevin Pollak and Stephen Baldwin, Byrne portrayed five career criminals in director Bryan Singer’s labyrinthine crime drama The Usual Suspects (1995). The sleep of the 1990s watched him acting in the heartwarming drama Frankie Starlight (1995, as a kindly Irish customs officer), Dr Hagard’s Disease (1996, also served as executive producer), Mad Dog Time (1996, with ex-wife Ellen Barkin) and Summer Fling (1996, also worked as co-executive producer and screenwriter). He also could be seen in Somebody Is Waiting (1996), Smilla’s Sense of Snow (1997, opposite Julia Ormond) and the drama The End of Violence (1997, as a surveillance expert). Behind the screen, Byrne made his directing debut with The Lark in The Clean Air (1996), which he also wrote and produced.

In the HBO comedy Weapons of Mass Distraction (1997) Byrne played a rival executives opposite Ben Kingsley. He followed it up with This Is the Sea (1997, alongside Richard Harris), Polish Wedding (1998, with Claire Danes and Lena Olin), The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) and the World War II romance The Brylcreem Boys (1998, also co-produced). Afterward, watch him acting in Tony Scott’s thriller Enemy of the State (1998, as a mysterious surveillance professional), Stigmata (1999, as a Vatican-sanctioned investigator) and the apocalyptical End of Days (1999, as the human incarnation of Satan, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger). (2004), an adaptation of Thornton Wilder’s 1927 Pulitzer-prize winning novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey (2004, with Robert De Niro, Kathy Bates and Harvey Keitel) and Assault on Precinct 13 (2005). In the following years, he will still grace the screen in a lot of upcoming films, including Wah-Wah, Jindabyne, The Namesake, Leningrad and Played. In 1995, he published his autobiography, Pictures in My Head. He also has released another books, Myths & Tales Of Ancient Ireland and The Woman Who Danced With JFK.

As for Byrneâ€s most recent news, he reportedly co-Produces New York premiere of “The Blowin’ of Baile Gall” by Ronan Noone. It will be starred by Ato Essandoh (has appeared in the films Garden State and Hitch) and will bow at Irish Arts Center from early September to late October 2005.

On Friday afternoons and other days on demand, senior Mark Loving III opens an informal barbershop in his campus apartment at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Guys and a few girls, too, line up for a fresh look for the weekend, issued with the staple of joking, gossip, wisdom and counsel.

Soon, though, he’ll perform his craft in a proper barber’s chair with a proper mirror in EMU’s newest student space. Modeled after a barbershop and salon and dubbed “The Royal Treatment,” the space will be managed by the Black Student Union (BSU).

“This is much more than a barbershop. This is a sanctuary,” says senior Jourdyn Friend, BSU vice president, during a special evening preview of the room. “Your hairdresser is more like a counselor, there to talk about your problems, because you’re there so long you might as well. This space is progress toward recognizing not just the majority but also the minority. This is a symbol of our voice being heard.”

The grand opening of “The Royal Treatment”–which includes two barber’s chairs, a hairwashing station, television and two comfortable couches, all enlivened by a bright wall mural celebrating African and African-American culture–is Jan. 21 at 11:45 a.m., during the university’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration. The ceremonial ribbon-cutting will be followed by a barbershop talk with local barber Tyrone Sprague. During past MLK days, a visit to Sprague’s downtown barbershop for some history, legend and lore was a much-loved EMU tradition.

“We’re so pleased that Mr. Tyrone Sprague will be coming to help us celebrate the opening of our very own barbershop and salon,” says Celeste Thomas, director of multicultural services and senior advisor to the president for diversity and inclusion. “Just like his barbershop has been for years, I know this place is going to be full of joking and laughter and wisdom, a place where people can literally and figuratively let their hair down, where they can come and have a good time and be relaxed and comfortable.”

A major ‘milestone’

For the sneak preview hangout last week, though, it was Loving who did the barbering honors in front of a group of student representatives from BSU and Latino Student Alliance invited by Thomas and lead residence director Scott Eyre. Both Thomas and Eyre sit on EMU’s Committee on Diversity and Inclusion (CODI), a 17-strong group that advises, consults and educates the EMU community.

BSU members called “The Royal Treatment” a major milestone in the university’s history. Senior Jessica Washington, the club’s secretary, said she never imagined “something like this” when she arrived on campus four years ago. “This is a real blessing.”

BSU co-president Jakiran Richardson, a sophomore, views the new space as the university’s way of showing empathy and understanding for students of color who must adapt to a predominantly white campus culture. “We understand what you’re going through,” he translates. “Here’s something to show our appreciation for you being here and that we are about who you are.”

Erick Camodeca, associate cross country and track and field coach, took advantage of the preview to relax in the barber’s chair while getting a “temp fade” from Loving.  Also a member of CODI, Camodeca might be new to the campus–he arrived last summer–but his experience at four other universities has given him a critical eye.

The new space, he says, “sends out a message that this university does care, that we are making a commitment to diversity and to our students.”

The barbershop is “all about community, which is one of EMU’s core values,” Camodeca adds. “What a better place to have a barbershop where people can come in of all diversities and backgrounds and share an experience and learn something.”

A measure of support for the room was the wild success of its crowdfunding campaign. More than $2,600 was raised by donors to purchase sinks, chairs and other amenities and decorations.

‘A meeting place’

Historically, the African-American barbershop and salon was, and still is, a meeting place, “a place where mothers take daughters, where fathers take sons, a family place, a place of confidentiality and gossip, with people coming in and out, selling this and that,” Thomas says.

“Not to mention food,” adds Friend to general laughter. “You can get your dinner there.”

The barbershop was also a place where “planning happened through the Jim Crow era and the civil rights movement,” Thomas says.

“It’s still definitely a place where dreams are fostered,” says former BSU co-president DeVantae Dews. Dews found Sprague’s barbershop downtown when he first arrived from Lynchburg as a first-year student. Over the years, time spent with Sprague reflecting on the Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter movements, along with a host of other topics, were important to his own outlook and activism.

“Those conversations gave me hope and vision for what I believe the next movement is to come,” Dews says, “and so I can only imagine how much wisdom will be poured down through our generations here in this place, and what this space can do–for reflecting on the growth that’s happened here at EMU and the planning we can do to make more change to help make this campus a better place for everyone.”

‘All hair types’ welcome

Eyre, the residence director, appreciates the new space as an opportunity to learn about and appreciate cultures different from one’s own. The barbershop and salon is rooted in his own learning experience, which began when female students using hair straighteners in the dorms repeatedly set off fire alarms.

“The reaction of some white and white Mennonite students who didn’t understand what was going on helped me admit that I didn’t know either,” Eyre says. “With a lot of grace, Celeste answered questions and shared about African-American hair and hairstyling and the processes involved, and I realized that EMU could do better in providing and creating spaces in support of our students.”

The barbershop and salon will be a familiar cultural space to many African-American students, he says, but white students “will have to figure out how they fit in,” a fair experience considering that African-American and minority students make that effort constantly at EMU, he says.

The cozy room in University Commons is located in a former office donated by the Student Government Association. Students at the sneak preview event said they were confident the space would quickly become a campus hangout.

The ambience brought back memories for Ariel Barbosa, co-president of Latino Student Alliance, of going to the barbershop with her dad, who has both African and indigenous Brazilian heritage. That same feeling of “being at home there” in the barbershop of her childhood is one she hopes will be shared here. “I’m excited that students are at the center of this project,” she says. “I just envision this as a space that will be one of true diversity, where people of all hair types will find a place.”

For Dews, who had worked on the initial plans for the space several years ago, sitting in the new lounge gives him “great hope,” he says. “And if I am hopeful sitting here, think of how a freshman would feel.…I believe this is the small fruit of the harvest of what God wants to do on this campus when looking at diversity, reconciling racial and social economies and all the other social constructions that try to divide us. This is just the beginning of what can happen on this campus.”

Let Tiger take you to the weekend at Riviera

Tiger Woods will help get the weekend started early on Friday afternoon in Los Angeles.

The weekend in Los Angeles will start a little early on Friday. Locals and tournament officials are expecting a party to break out at Riviera on Friday afternoon, with Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas hastening the sprint to happy hour and the weekend.

That trio is headlining an absolutely loaded field at the Genesis Open. It’s already a great event just by virtue of the venue. Riviera always delivers an above-average viewing experience and can be the star of a PGA Tour event on its own. But this year, the field is arguably the best its ever been. On Thursday, I walked the course with that trio but it was hard to ignore so many big names while doing so. Phil Mickelson was playing just a group behind but he was an afterthought. Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson had afternoon tee times, but they were simply a second act following Tiger, Rory, and JT. All of these players are worth watching in their own right, it’s just that we’ve never really had a group as good as those three together.

After a crack-of-dawn start on Thursday, that trio will go in the late wave on Friday. They will also move to the No. 1 tee after starting the first round on 10. All three birdied the 10th at Riv, one of the three or four most iconic par-4s in golf. But it was an uneven round following that dramatic start, with all three hovering around even-par.

Tiger will go just after Noon local in Los Angeles, and at 3:02 p.m. ET. The pace of play was steady through the first round, with Woods getting around Riv in a little over four hours. That’s not bad for a congested group on a relatively small tract of land. There was some waiting on the par-5s but that was about it in the opening round. So expect those three to finish up sometime after 7 p.m. ET. Golf Channel has adjusted their programming accordingly and moved their coverage window back from 3 to 7 p.m. ET.

Highlighting the morning half of the draw will be Spieth, DJ, Patrick Cantlay, and Bubba Watson. The defending champ, DJ, scuffled through an opening round 74. This course plays more like a par 70 or 69 for the big-hitting DJ, so a 74 is a brutal number and one that will force him to go low on Friday to make the cut.

Broncos cut Chad Kelly a day after trespassing arrest

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Chad Kelly’s short stint as the Denver Broncos’ backup quarterback is over, and his former teammates and ex-coaches are trying to ignore the distraction of his dismissal while keeping him in their thoughts.

The Broncos waived the second-year pro Wednesday, a day after he was arrested on suspicion of criminal trespass after being accused of entering a couple’s suburban home uninvited.

General manager John Elway huddled with coach Vance Joseph and team President Joe Ellis and “we agreed that releasing Chad was the right thing to do,” Elway said.

“Even though Chad’s no longer part of our team, we’ve offered to help him however we can and are supportive of him in every possible way,” Elway added.

Joseph said after practice Wednesday that following many hours of meetings with Kelly and conversations with one another, the trio “thought it was the best thing for the Broncos — and for Chad” to waive him.

“As a friend, man, I’m hurting for him,” starting quarterback Case Keenum said.

“I’m rooting for him so much,” said new backup quarterback Kevin Hogan.

Joseph insisted the drama won’t affect the Broncos (3-4) on Sunday at Kansas City (6-1).

“We have a great locker room. We have a close-knit football team and their focus is the Chiefs,” Joseph said. “They all feel bad for Chad. They will support Chad as their former teammate. But we have one focus and that’s the Chiefs on Sunday morning.”

Cornerback Chris Harris Jr. termed it a “season-changing game” and said, “if you’re not focusing on that, all of this other (nonsense) that’s going on, you’re missing the big point of this game. This is a big game to change our season and get us back rolling.”

Before a court appearance Wednesday, Kelly drove up to team headquarters in a white SUV and sprinted in and out of the building without stopping to answer questions. He also declined to comment outside court shortly before the Broncos announced his dismissal.

He stood silently next to his lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, during his appearance at Arapahoe County District Court, where his next appearance was scheduled for Nov. 8. Steinberg declined to comment on his way out of the courtroom and again when reached later by the AP.

Kelly attended an annual Halloween costume party hosted by Von Miller in suburban Englewood on Monday night. It was after that party that Kelly found himself in trouble.

According to court records, a couple reported that a stranger entered their Englewood home after 1 a.m. Tuesday, sat on their couch and was “mumbling incoherently.” Police say they found the 24-year-old Kelly afterward parked nearby. The man identified Kelly as the intruder and provided surveillance video to police.

Police and court records do not address Kelly’s physical state at the time, and there is no mention of testing for alcohol or substance use. Police said officers made the arrest “without incident.”

Kelly was released from jail Tuesday on $2,500 bond.

Social media clips from the Halloween party put two other Broncos under scrutiny: Receiver Emmanuel Sanders dressed up as the Tyrone Biggums character from “Chappelle’s Show” and put some flour on his face to mimic the cocaine the character was famous for, and linebacker Brandon Marshall was shown holding up a bag of flour to impersonate ’80s R&B star Bobby Brown.

Joseph grew irritated when answering a question about that party, which he called “a private, team function.”

“It was a party. You know, players have parties. So, I don’t have an opinion about that. It was organized and it was safe. It was a team function,” Joseph said. “Our guys have dinner every Wednesday and Thursday night and no one cares about that. OK, so again, our focus is on the Chiefs, and that’s it. Not a Halloween party. Are we kidding? It’s nonsense. It is.”

Kelly, who earned the nickname “Swag” in college and burnished it with terrific performances in the preseason, ended up playing just one snap for the Broncos, a kneel-down just before halftime against the Rams on Oct. 14 while Keenum was being evaluated for a concussion.

“He’s worked very hard to better himself as a man,” Harris said. “So, it’s unfortunate to see him have that downfall. But I think he can get back right and he’ll have another opportunity in the league.”

If he signs elsewhere, Kelly could still face a suspension from the NFL, which said Tuesday that it is reviewing the matter.

Elway chose Kelly with the final pick of the 2017 NFL draft after fellow Hall of Famer Jim Kelly personally vouched for his nephew, whose college career at Clemson, East Mississippi Community College and Ole Miss was marred by discipline problems and legal troubles.

Chad Kelly missed his rookie season while recovering from knee and wrist injuries, then beat out former first-round draft pick Paxton Lynch last summer to serve as Keenum’s backup.

That job now belongs to Hogan, a third-year pro acquired off waivers from Washington last month who was taken aback by Kelly’s dismissal.

“He was a great teammate in this locker room,” Hogan said, “and I know all the guys support him and hope all the best goes his way.”
