I would check the comments on this post by @bluedove216 for actual lighting tips(hope you don’t mind the @ dove-)

I haven’t tried most of what they suggested but I HAVE tried the CamScanner app :D you can use it for free and it’s pretty easy/ helpful! It’s meant for scanning documents tehe

I don’t use it a whole lot, especially with drawings that have a lot of color, but it’s helpful when i have horrid lighting, or use it for sketches!!!

also, don’t be afraid to toggle your photo settings if you can’t get good lighting~ >:0

i most frequently adjust brightness and black point- especially for when your camera isn’t picking up on pencil lines and such, it’s a helpful way to make your photos represent irl better.

ANYWAYS YEAH I’m real inconsistent and unconventional about it 🫠let yourself experiment, check out their suggestions and try some, they get their photos looking SO CLEAN >:)

Ah, so tell me Sugar or Salt for better preservation?

salt! especially when you're working with dry preservation, which is what it's being used for typically. sugar will attract bugs and other things which will eat away at the specimen, along with not drawing out the moisture nearly as well / at all.

but if you're working with things like rabbits feet, which are intended to be dry at the end, you'd think that the process involves just drying them, right? but you'd be wrong! the process (at least that i've followed in the past) involves soaking them twice, once in a soapy water mixture to remove parasites, then in a high concentrate isopropyl alcohol, rinsing thoroughly between steps.

processes vary depending on what you're working on. another example is that for the rooster i'm planning to take the wings from, i'm going to need to both remove his wings, and go through the process of removing the flesh while also keeping the skin in tact around his bones, since i'm going to be effectively stuffing the void with cotton, so that everything lays properly when its all dried. those are actually going to be dried in salt, which is primarily because he was a domestic animal and i know where he'd been.

It’s for “unclubable men”, meaning men who abhor social interaction or are just poor at it, that normal social clubs are nightmare! So it’s a location for people to just exist in silence and not have to engage with others with no judgement. And also comfy chairs and books. There is a game room but no talking allowed. I expect the complete silence but for the clicky clacky of billiards is very appealing to people.

He lives there, at the club. He leaves for work every morning where he looks over government finances and returns in the evening to his curated sensory safe room. He’s living his best life.

What's your opinion on a character's disability staying even when they're shapeshifting? I accidentally gave one of my physically disabled characters shapeshifting powers (he was a shapeshifter before I made him disabled,) and I know getting rid of disability through shapeshifting is bad, so I was thinking I'd have him retain his disability in different forms. Like, if he's turned into a cat, he still has his blindness, old broken bones, and chronic pain, he's just now a cat with those things. Would it be erasure to include things like turning into a worm, which has no painful bones or spinal cord, to make his chronic pain bearable while he waits for pain medication to kick in? Being a worm is obviously not a viable long-term solution, he does not like being it, and it's only a temporary measure to sort of fix one very specific problem (very bad pain day but ibuprofen taking what feels like years to kick in,) but should I scrap that?

Since my teens, when I started openly dating other women, I have fielded (mostly from men) the rude but “innocent” question of how two women have sex. The implication being that sex includes penetration by a penis, that this act is the culmination of all the lesser acts that precede it. Perhaps the biggest inherited narrative about sex that I’ve had to undo in myself is that default defining of all sex as related to hetero sex. Back then, no matter how I explained it, the askers of that question frowned. How sad, their faces seem to say, that you’ve never ever gotten past third base. How sad, I’d now like to reply, that you’ve been trapped on a baseball diamond for all of your sexual life.

Show us what your sex is, what your characters’ sex is. Maybe you, too, have been defining it in relationship to heterosexual models that have nothing to do with your own desire, or that of your characters. This might be hardest for straight people, who have the greatest number of inherited stories to wade through. Discover it in the writing; I often have. The beauty is that we don’t have to agree on this. When I was a dominatrix, I once rubbed balloons all over a man for seventy-five dollars. He would’ve called it sex. I called it work. It was mutually consensual, and I think we were both correct in our assessment.

If your sex is balloons, if it is blowing raspberries on your lover’s belly, if it happens fully clothed or in furry costumes, if it happens in a group or alone—give it the same gravity, the same reverence or irreverence as all of the tiresome dick-chafing scenes we all grew up reading. If you have a moment, or if you could signal boost this, I would be very grateful for any recommendations for vintage comedies featuring boats.

My three year old is obsessed with boats. He also insisted he wanted to watch Sabrina with me, and apparently enjoyed it very much.

I am unsure what exactly he found pleasing about it besides the brief boat appearances--inquiries were inconclusive--but he indicated that he'd very much like to try more classic films as long as they contained boats occasionally.

The Philadelphia Story contains a model boat, but its appearances are so infrequent I’m guessing he probably will not be satisfied. To Have and Have Not and Key Largo both involve Humphrey Bogart piloting small boats, so he might enjoy those in a similar vein to Sabrina. If you’d like something colorful and bright, there is 1950’s Treasure Island with Robert Newton—a pretty mid movie by my dim recollection, but he may like Newton’s very scrungly pirate on his big boat. If your kid can handle the possibility of murders, there is also the Miss Marple mystery Murder Ahoy, which has a very funny cast running around a small docked boat.

If his boat interest possibly extends to other modes of oceanic transport, I also always recommend Yellow Submarine, which is a fantastic animated movie that spends a ton of time exploring fantastical seas and has a great submarine as a main character. If you enjoy gorgeous, strange visuals and are not allergic to Beatles music, you might love this movie too—it is a beautiful work of art.

I hope other help in the reblogs! I’m definitely missing some iconic boat movies (like mutiny on the bounty, which I haven’t watched yet)—everyone help this wonderful kid out.

EDIT: I am an idiot and Key Largo might be too scary for a little kid. (People die onscreen and there are gangsters.) Murder Ahoy might also fall into this category. Someone help out our asker who actually has a grasp on what’s appropriate for a little one. (I stand by Yellow Submarine, though.)

big cave post

you like caves? no? im showing you anyway. you hear cave and probably think of like, a video game cave. maybe a minecraft cave with axolotls? while i have my gripes with axolotls in caves, this is about the caves themselves. so here, lets get started:

number 1, lod cave in thailand. now, i could do a whole posts about JUST caves in thailand, but here's your first taste of caves from this area. this is a karst cave, formed by water trickling through soluble rock like limestone. it's what most of the caves on this list are going to be. it's one of the most common types of caves. if you've been inside a cave, it was probably a karst. very cool! i particularly enjoy the man shaped stalagmite in the middle (joke, thats just a real guy)

number 2, ellison's cave in georgia, usa. featuring a drop over a thousand feet deep, this one is pretty high on my bucket list. this is what's called a chute, formed by waterfalls cascading downwards. not recommended for people with a fear of heights! if you watch jacon geller, youve probably heard of this type of formation when he talked about krubera (not on this list, sadly)

number 3, mammoth cave in kentucky, usa. one i've been to! mammoth is the longest cave system in the ENTIRE world, that we know of. another one the jacob geller fans are familiar with. i would love to go back someday, pictures dont convey the magnitude of this place. they also used to host church services in here. well worth the visit

number 4, han son doong in vietnam. the LARGEST cave in the world! wait, didnt i already list that? nope, while mammoth is the longest and is massive in its own right, son doong trumps it by having a ceiling 660 feet (200 meters) high. it has stalagmites the size of skyscrapers. its one of the many caves in southeast asia to have its own rainforest system. a bit of a hike to get there, but another i desperately want to visit someday.

number 5, fingal's cave in scotland. though not record setting, its one youve probably seen before. or, maybe my perspective has been skewed as someone who looks at a LOT of caves. ive seen this exact picture more times than i can count. its a sea cave formed from our good friend columnar basalt. upon further research, apparently its also known for its natural acoustics. the more you know!

number 6, grotta azurra in capri. that photo isnt edited! only accessible by boat (and laying flat on your back to get through the entrance) this place looks ridiculously magical. i dont really have much to say about this one, i just think its really cool.

number 7, domica cave in slovakia. this one was brought to my attention by an anonymous asker (if youre still here hi) and i am in love with it. just an absolutely gorgeous cave with some of the most beautiful formations ive ever seen. just look at it! augh! the tiered pools arent something ive seen in any of the caves ive been to and theyre captivating. i love caves.
