after haley's death, celebrating christmas was hard for aaron.

it was already difficult after they had gotten divorced, but once she died? it was like she took the holiday spirit with her.

she was the one that decorated and did the cooking; she made a whole event out of assembling the tree and putting a star on top of it.

christmas while going through their rough patch was the one time where everything felt normal, when haley, him, and jack were a family and things weren't strained.

then, she died.

it was as devastating to aaron as it was to jack, too.

aaron tried his best to keep up with the already pre-established traditions, but with his demanding job constantly dragging him away, followed by the absolute tsunami of grief, it was like everything was slipping through his fingers.

then came you, with your bright smile and determination.

when you had begun to date and you asked him what his plans were for the holidays, you took one look at the pitiful tree, and lights that he had put up, and shook your head.

it was the first time in a long time that he had dug the decorations out of storage.

it was dusty, and you sneezed occasionally, but you had made an effort.

you made sure to recruit jack, putting on christmas music and trotting around.

it was the first decemeber that aaron really, truly smiled.

and just because he gets a break for the holidays doesn't mean that's the last he sees of his team.

you make an effort to throw a party - with penelope's assistance of course.

it's loud, it's cheerful, it's boisterous, but it fills his silent home with laughter that it had been lacking.

he finds peace in the noise.

sometimes his life feels like it's too loud, that it's moving too fast and he just wants a moment to catch his breath.

but as he stares off at his friends interacting with your warmth tucked closely to his side, he finds that he doesn't want anything else.

he doesn't want the dark noise and the silent nights, the heavy air and depressing atmosphere.

he wants this.

and he had no idea how badly until you came along.

how long has his life been dim like this? how many christmases had he let pass just because he was busy?

it's a sickening feeling, and an even sicker thought, but with a hand on his shoulder, he knows that it's not his burden to carry alone any longer.

let's talk santa.

jack loves santa.

and aaron has been lacking in being the red jolly man he's expected to be.

he feels you climb out of bed, and with a quick glance to his alarm clock shows that it's nearing five in the morning.

you creep around, digging in the closet and setting items out on the bed.

he can feel how jittery with excitement you are as you rustle around.

there's the distinct sound of a stocking filling, along with a tinkling of a toy; and aaron smiles to himself.

yeah, he's sure he's going to be just a ecstatic in the morning.

when morning does come, it's full of love and laughter, of jack's excited squeals and your year filled eyes at his sentimental gifts.

the engagement ring he has for you burns a hole in one of his jacket pockets that is shoved deep in the closet.

that's not something that santa can give just yet.

he has to do it all on his own, and he anticipates the day it'll come.

just seeing your grin is enough.

this section from chapter 3 of An's wedding event. they're doing a wedding photoshoot but accidentally hire two models for the bride and no model for the groom, but they decide to go ahead anyway in spite of the gender. it doesn't seem like much on the surface but with the context of gay marriage not being legal in japan there's a little bit extra to that "gender has nothing to do with it" comment.
