Beware of this new Android malware that empties your bank account, clears your device completely
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s been a spike in malware hitting Android phones, and the latest one, called BingoMod, might be the scariest yet. This malware can steal money from your accounts and then wipe your phone clean. Using on-device fraud techniques, it can swipe up to $16,000 in one go. And the worst part? This isn’t even the final version. Researchers say the creators are working on adding more features to make sure it doesn’t get detected.GET SECURITY ALERTS, EXPERT TIPS – SIGN UP FOR KURT’S NEWSLETTER – THE CYBERGUY REPORT HEREAccording to researchers at Cleafy, the malware is a remote access trojan (RAT), meaning an attacker uses it to gain full remote access to your Android phone. The malware enters your phone as an app, which is distributed through smishing (SMS phishing) campaigns. The malicious app often masquerades as a legitimate antivirus application with names like APP Protection, Antivirus Cleanup, Chrome Update, InfoWeb, SicurezzaWeb, WebSecurity, WebsInfo, WebInfo, and APKAppScudo. The Cleafy report noted that, in one instance, it also imitated the free AVG AntiVirus & Security tool available on Google Play. We reached out to Google, and a spokesperson provided the following statement.”Based on our current detection, no apps containing this malware are found on Google Play. Android users are automatically protected against known versions of this malware by Google Play Protect, which is on by default on Android devices with Google Play Services. Google Play Protect can warn users or block apps known to exhibit malicious behavior, even when those apps come from sources outside of Play.”Once installed on your phone, BingoMod asks you to activate Accessibility Services, which should be taken as a red flag. When you grant access to Accessibility Services, you’re practically giving it access to everything on your phone.Once BingoMod has all the permissions it needs, its background functions start to act, aiming to provide sensitive data to the actors behind the malware. It uses a technique called keylogging to steal sensitive information displayed on the device screen or entered by you, such as login credentials or account balances. It can also intercept your messages to detect one-time passwords or authentication codes. To stop you from removing it from your phone, the malware blocks you from changing system settings, blocks certain apps and even uninstalls apps. But to cover its tracks, it lets attackers wipe the infected device, usually after a fraudulent transfer has been done.ANDROID BANKING TROJAN EVOLVES TO EVADE DETECTION AND STRIKE GLOBALLYResearchers believe BingoMod has yet to reach its full potential. The malware is still in its testing phase, and the hackers behind it are working to add more features. Cleafy researchers noted,”BingoMod is in a development phase, where developers are experimenting with obfuscation techniques to lower its detection rate against AV solutions. From the whole sample collected, what has emerged is the will to try multiple anti-analysis configurations rather than making the malware more complex in terms of functionalities.”ANDROID BANKING TROJAN MASQUERADES AS GOOGLE PLAY TO STEAL YOUR DATAWhile a remote access trojan is hard to detect and can be dangerous once it enters your phone, there are several things you can do to protect your data.1. Be cautious of phishing attempts: Be vigilant about messages and emails from unknown sources asking for personal information. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or providing sensitive details unless you can verify the legitimacy of the request.2. Have strong antivirus software: Android has its own built-in malware protection called Play Protect, but it’s not enough to stop all malicious software. Historically, Play Protect hasn’t been 100% foolproof at removing all known malware from Android phones. The best way to protect yourself from clicking malicious links that install malware that may get access to your private information is to have antivirus protection installed on all your devices. This can also alert you of any phishing emails or ransomware scams. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?3. Download apps from reliable sources: It’s important to download apps only from trusted sources like the Google Play Store. They have strict checks to prevent malware and other harmful software. However, even with the security measures provided by Google Play, downloading apps from the store does not guarantee 100% protection against malware or harmful software. Avoid downloading apps from unknown websites or unofficial stores, as they can pose a higher risk to your personal data and device. Never trust download links that you get through SMS.4. Use an identity theft protection service: Given the increasing sophistication of Android malware like BingoMod, using an identity theft protection service is a crucial step in safeguarding your personal information.Identity theft companies can monitor personal information like your Socia8l Security number, phone number and email address and alert you if it is being sold on the dark web or being used to open an account. They can also assist you in freezing your bank and credit card accounts to prevent further unauthorized use by criminals. See my tips and best picks on how to protect yourself from identity theft.5. Be cautious with app permissions: Always review the permissions requested by apps before installation. If an app requests access to features that seem unnecessary for its function, it could be a sign of malicious intent. Do not give any app Accessibility permissions unless you really need to. Avoid granting permissions that could compromise your personal data.GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE6. Monitor your accounts: If you think you have been affected by the banking trojan, regularly review your bank statements, credit card statements and other financial accounts for any unauthorized activity. If you notice any suspicious transactions, report them immediately to your bank or credit card company.7. Enable SMS notifications for your bank accounts: By enabling SMS notifications, you can monitor your accounts for any unauthorized transactions.8. Set up two-factor authentication (2FA): 2FA is an extra shield that prevents hackers from accessing your accounts.9. Use strong and unique passwords: Create strong passwords for your accounts and devices and avoid using the same password for multiple online accounts. Consider using a password manager. A password manager can help you create and store strong, unique passwords for all your accounts, reducing the risk of password theft.10. Regularly update your device’s operating system and apps: Keeping your software up to date is crucial, as updates often include security patches for newly discovered vulnerabilities that could be exploited by trojans.11. Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions: Public Wi-Fi networks can be insecure, making it easier for malware or hackers to intercept your data. When accessing sensitive information or conducting financial transactions, use a secure, private connection to protect your data.ANDROID USERS AT RISK AS BANKING TROJAN TARGETS MORE APPSAs scary as BingoMod sounds, staying vigilant is your best defense. Always be cautious about downloading apps from unknown sources or clicking on suspicious links in texts. Keep your device updated, use a trusted antivirus and be wary of any app asking for too many permissions. This malware might be evolving, but so are the ways to protect yourself.Do you check app permissions before installing? How do you decide which permissions are acceptable? … .

An "I'm in Australia, what can I do for Palestine?" masterpost
Petitions:
Petition EN5847 - Provide Consular Support to Palestinian Australian Families (this one closes at 11:59 on the Thursday 15th of February. Please sign before then if you can, and make sure you confirm your email!)
Ask your super fund to divest from companies that support apartheid conditions (Australian Palestinian Action Network)
https://www.aph.gov.au/e-petitions/petition/EN5847
Australia: stop sending arms to Israel (Amnesty International)
Urge Australian Government to Save Local Doctor's Family Trapped in Gaza (petition by family members)
Australia: Reverse decision to suspend UNRWA funding (Amnesty International)
Reinstate UNRWA Funding (Australian Palestinian Action Network)
Grant Palestinians fleeing the conflict in Gaza access to humanitarian support! (Australian Social Workers for Palestine)
Contact your representatives:
Start by finding your MP here
Call or email to ask that Australia push for an immediate ceasefire, provide consular support to family members to leave Gaza, and reinstate UNRWA funding. If that's too much, pick one point to start with! I like to write myself a script before calling, as it removes some of the anxiety. Calling is preferable to emailing, but whatever you have the capacity for is so much better than nothing
Once you've contacted your MP, you can also contact Penny Wong on (08) 8313 8272 or [email protected]
If you can contribute financially:
Donate an eSIM to help Gazans stay connected
Donate to help the most medically vulnerable evacuate Rafah (I completely understand that many people are wary of donating via GoFundMe, but the people involved in this effort do an excellent job at documenting their efforts + keeping records for accountability purposes. Have a look at @raindovemodel @merryfet on instagram for more details
Help El Rahman Inc buy Cairo -> Melbourne tickets for stranded families. They're a Melbourne-based organisation that does amazing work
If you only feel comfortable donating to NGOs, consider the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund, Anera, UNRWA, or the Red Crescent
And, finally:
Come to your local action on Sunday. Even better, bring a friend
If you're a university student, alumni, or prospective student, check whether the institution in question partners with any companies on the BDS list. A disappointingly high number of unis partner with weapons manufacturing companies. If yes, urge them to divest.
Learn the BDS list. Do not purchase anything from companies on the list.

🎃☀️🎃🌙 Dead Ringer ☀️🎃🌙🎃
Hi @baby-bloos!! I was your Secret Skeleton this year! Wrote you a little something spooky in the Sleuth Jesters universe, I hope you enjoy!!
Tagging @naffeclipse and @sunnys-aesthetic since it's y'alls au/aus (if that wasn’t okay please let me know!), I hadn't read Sleuth Jesters prior to making this, very much enjoyed what I did get through before I started writing, hope I did your characters/story some justice!
I made a few little tweaks to stuff just to fit more with the storyline I was going for (the characters are the same, just some small plot things are adjusted) but obviously Sleuth Jesters and the Detective Au belong to the respective lovely people mentioned up above ^-^
Small content warning for a tiny bit of blood mentions and oil protrayed as blood mentions, nothing super major, just adding to the overall spooky vibe.
Had to post solely on Ao3 for better readability (she got long lol), have fun!
Word count: 8313
Talking about the story under the cut (slight spoilers)
I hope you like it Bloos!!! And again hope I was able to give SJ & the Detective au the spotlight they deserve >_<
Was very nervous to post this ngl 😅 but I like how it turned out! I'm a big fan of the murder mystery trope and couldn't help but incorporate it into my gift :)

5 years of linghxr 🎂
Tumblr media
Today marks 5 years of linghxr! Well, technically Tumblr notified me of my blog’s anniversary 2 days ago. But I didn’t make my first post until July 12th, so I’ve decided to celebrate today instead.
I started learning Mandarin Chinese as a little kid attending weekend Chinese school, and I also took it in high school. I got 认真 about it in college after realizing my Chinese wasn’t even good enough to test out of the 1st year Chinese course. I spent all my free time studying the Chinese Grammar Wiki and successfully placed into 2nd year Chinese!
I started this blog the following summer as I tried not to forget everything before the 3rd year Chinese course, while also studying Russian. Over the past 5-6 years, I have…
…read 3 webnovels and 1 book
…watched 17 cdramas and 25 seasons of variety/reality shows
…posted 282 times on this blog
…made 8313 flashcards in Anki
07/20/24 The contest is closed, and I have contacted the winner.
To give back to the langblr community, I am gifting winner’s choice of prize from two resources/platforms I have used myself. They are both digital to make this more accessible.
Prizes
The lucky winner can pick one of these options:
Option 1 - iTalki gift card for $60 of iTalki credits
Option 2 - Pleco Pro Bundle worth $59.99 (see under the cut for bundle content)
Requirements to enter
To enter, all you need to do is like, reblog, or comment on this post. You can do more than one if you like, but please don’t spam the post. Feel free to vote in the poll too, but that’s just for fun 😄
You have one week (until next Friday, July 19th) to enter. Shortly after, I will select a winner at random and message them to coordinate details (make sure your Tumblr settings allow me to message you). If there is no response after 48 hours, I will select someone else. If you are under 18, please get parent or guardian permission.
Thank you for 5 wonderful years of blogging!
Via Pleco, the pro bundle includes:
Our more expensive bundle includes almost every "feature" add-on plus 6 different dictionaries; two English-to-Chinese ones (one smaller one with Pinyin and one larger one without), the massive ABC Chinese-to-English, the bidirectional Oxford Chinese Dictionary, the small-but-example-rich Tuttle Chinese-English, and (to stretch your reading skills a bit) the Chinese-to-Chinese Guifan dictionary.

Patterns for my Legend/Red Mail link Cosplay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mcalls 8313 for his undertunic. I wanted to use a kilt pattern but I couldn't find one and I have about 4 days to sew all this. Gonna be Dark Hunter green cotton and poly blend broadcloth.
Simplicity 8960 - btw simplicity patterns are on sale at Joann's for like...2 bucks rn. Is for the red overtunic. I SHOULD use the short one. But I'm gonna use the right one but make it shorter and cut off the sleeves. I wanted SO badly to make this with velvet and line the inside with Gold lamme but red and yellow cotton was only 2 dollars. So.
Both are "Easy Sew" patterns. So hopefully the hardest thing about it will be cutting the fabric which I suck at. Going for a Medieval Knight look rather than a canon one. Don't need a pattern for the belt I just need time to crochet it or make it out of foam.
