hello! first, i wanna say thank you for what you do. i have a d&d campaign that takes place in a greek-inspired region, and i frequently find myself coming to this blog to look for inspiration and information thats difficult to find on google, so thank you for doing that! second, i had a question. in my campaign, i want to have this tacky kind of burlesque tavern. i thought it would be fun to mix some elements of greek culture in there (like styles of dance or clothing) but i dont want to disrespect the culture by like, "sexy-ifying" it as would be expected for burlesque. so i wanted to ask if there's anything that exists in greek history that could be compatible with that aesthetic without being butchered? ty!
Hello! It's wonderful that the blog has enriched your experience in D&D!
Regarding your question, burlesque in its strict sense does not exist in the Greek culture but there are a couple of things that could be considered "close enough". First of all, since burlesque itself was invented in early 19th century, I assume we are talking about Modern Greek culture? We should take into account whether what you are imagining also involves some degree of sex work, which historically happened at times with burlesque. In any case, before I go to my modern Greek suggestions, we could consider that:
in Ancient Greece there was a dance called Codrax which could either stand on its own or was often employed as an interval during comedies. The dance was downright obscene and sometimes comical to match the vibes of the show. The dancer was masked and often also played the zills.
in the Byzantine empire, women could work as actresses, dancers and acrobats. They often worked in festivals and celebrations in the hippodrome. Many of those were also sex workers and they were definitely perceived as sex workers but not all of them actually did sex work.
in Ottoman Greece, sex workers would be in taverns-brothels and they would often dance accompanied by music. The dance at the time was quite like belly dancing, the Greek-style belly dance called tsifteteli.
So now let's go to Modern Greek entertainment. There are two types of entertainment that could resemble burlesque a little bit; some types of old buzúkia and epitheórisi (revue).
Old Buzúkia
Buzukia is a Greek form of music entertainment that is still very popular today but it has been continuously evolving throughout time. The period that is relevant to our topic was between 50s-70s. Buzukia is generally a late night live music scene which also offers food and alcohol. The main focus of the show has always been the music and the singing and they were so embraced by Greek society that most of the successful commercial Greek singers have performed in buzukia for a great part of their career. Before the 70s, the show program of buzukia could vary considerably and especially the most well known ones would also feature ballets and dancers. The dance shows could have a theatrical aspect to them (ie performative dancing where some sort of simple story is easily conveyed) and the dances could be sensual. The outfits were often pretty sexy, with feathers and orientalist influences. However, it was supposed to be sexy and sensual without being too tacky and without being too provocative. There were buzukia where stripping and / or sex work was involved, however the vast majority in this type of entertainment had nothing to do with it and was pretty mainstream. There are two Greek celebrities who in movies often had roles of this type of buzukia dancers I describe here specifically, the dancer-actress Martha Karagianni and actress-singer Zozo Sapountzaki, the "Queen of the Night", as she is called (she's 91 and thriving!).
Martha Karagianni:

Zozó Sapountzaki / Greek Buzukia '68:

And this Zozo video for some costume inspiration:

(By the way Zozo at her 91st birthday party in May:
Tumblr media
It has nothing to do with your question but I felt like saying it. I am gonna add an evil eye emoji for good measure 🧿)
Now of course there is lightness but there is no humour in all this or the humour is minimal.
Epitheórisi (revue)
Revue is a theatrical genre that has been huge in Greece up until the noughties. Revue is a satirical and comical theatrical play which does a lot of commentary on political and social matters. The Epitheorisi, like Revue in general, features most of the time dance intervals or sketches with burlesque or burlesque-like ballets. The dances are sexy but again they are not too tacky / cheap or too vulgar. They can be tacky / suggestive but there is a limit usually. The ballets often sing as well and their lyrics may be comical or satirical in the context of the play.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some recent epitheorisi plays.
Tumblr media
An epitheorisi poster of 1894.
Tumblr media
And OF COURSE Zozo in an Epitheorisi play.
So in Buzukia you get the tavern / restaurant and sensual aspect of it whereas in Epitheorisi you get the theatrical and funny / tacky vibe. So if you blend these things I told you, you can create some sort of possible Greek situation. Like, a small Epitheorisi number in a well known Buzukia centre. And the character can be from a simple member of the ballet, talented in dancing or singing or a little humour, to an absolute diva that can combine it all. Just take note that it was never too obscene and even though the clothing could be very sexy, there was no stripping beyond underwear unless then it became a different type of situation that involved sex work. And also there is more orientalism in Greek entertainment than in western burlesque.

All Our Lives - Feysand Writing Circle
Tumblr media
Hello,
I'm Shallyne and a few days ago I posted that I'd like to create a Feysand Writing Circle, and I'd like to a explain a few things.
How did this idea form?
A few months ago, I posted a little poem for an incoming fic called "All Our Lives" but maybe some of you realized I didn't continue this idea. The reason wasn't that I disliked the idea then but I had so many ideas and the overall idea has so much potential and my brain created half a fic and then jumped to the next idea. A few weeks ago I started playing with the idea to start a writing circle and when I stumbled upon All Our Lives again, I thought this was an amazing opportunity.
What is the original idea of All Our Lives?
The original idea was to create a fanfiction which chapters were pretty much just oneshots. Every chapter is Feysand in a different universe. The idea was that all the oneshots are Feyre and Rhysand in a different lifetime, their souls always finding back to each other.
How can I participate in this Writing Circle?
You got an idea and want your story to be part of the All Our Lives writing circle? That's amazing, I'm so glad! It's not hard, you just click on the title of this post or -> here <- and you will be transferred to the AO3 Feysand Writing Circle collection. There you can add your fic to the collection.
But you don't have an AO3 account or want to stay anonym? This is not a problem at all! You can send me your fic in my ask box or send me a message here on Tumblr, where I will give you my email-address to send me your fic. I will then post it on my account but of course I will mention you, or say that it was send by an anon, to post.
What are the rules?
The rules are simple!
Every fanfiction in this Writing Circle will be a oneshot
There is no time limit
The word count is up to you
Every oneshot will play in a different universe
Stay respectful to other participants! You don't have to like every idea but that doesn't mean you need to tell them.
What do you mean with "universe"?
When I say different universe I mean that the fics are supposed to play outside of the canon acotar universe. You are free to chose from almost any universe, as long as it's not harmful to any group of people. For example: Book Universes (Throne of glass, Howls Moving Castle, Classics, Shatter Me, The Cruel Prince, etc.,), Show and Movie Universes (MCU, Gilmore Girls, Peaky Blinders, Burlesque, 50 first dates, Back to the Future, Wizard of Oz, etc.,), different time periods (Medieval, the Renaissance, Victorian, ancient Greece) or decades (20's, 50''s, 60's, 80's, 90's 00's), or even universes that you don't have a name for but so not play in the canon acotar universe (Modern AU, Regency AU, Angels, Demons, Mermaids, etc.,)
What is not allowed?
Canon acotar Universe
Multichapters
Another main couple (see something else?)
Something else?
Yes! So, you can include every other character, from the acotar or SJM universe, and any other ship but the main couple will always be Feysand. The whole story is about them and finding each other in all their lives, so writing around another couple would be pointless for this Writing Circle.
When will the Writing Circle begin?
Technically, you can already post whenever your ready. I would not take your fic down if you want to do that, it's allowed but if you want a direct date, I'd like June 1st as a starting date
I can't tell you when I will be able to contribute but I will be so excited to see your fics, my friends! Everyone is welcome and I hope you will participate!
Your question wasn't answered yet?
Then please don't shy away from sending me an ask or send me a message so we can find an answer
You can always find this post linked on my pinned post

Adirondack Daily Enterprise, January 28, 2010
Tumblr media
When she was growing up in Lake Placid, Lizzy Grant used to perform in choirs and school plays at St. Agnes and Lake Placid Middle/High School, and though she was still young, audiences could see she had the potential for a future in music.
"Even then you could tell that she had a very different and powerful sound, because she could mesmerize the entire audience even when she was little girl," said father Rob Grant.
Now 24 years old, Lizzy Grant is on her way. Earlier this month, she released her first professionally produced album, "Kill Kill," under the stage name Lana Del Ray on the label Five Points Records, and it is now available for purchase on iTunes and other Web sites.
Lizzy recorded the album with producer David Kahne, who has worked with well-known musicians from Paul McCartney, Cher and Bruce Springsteen to No Doubt, Guster and Matisyahu.
"He produced most of the major music groups that have come out of the last couple of decades, so she was very fortunate to get a producer of that world-class caliber," Rob said.
When she was recording, Lizzy even got to meet Paul McCartney. McCartney came with his son, James, to start working with Kahne on an album of his, and Lizzy decided she wanted to meet them. She knocked on the door, saw McCartney and waved to him.
"David's like, 'Oh my God,'" Lizzy said. "Paul didn't care."
Lizzy said she saw a toy piano that made what she called a "sparkly jewelry box sound" and said she wanted to use it for her album, but Kahne said she couldn't since it was already on McCartney's. When she made a face, McCartney tried to comfort her.
"He said, 'Don't pout, Lizzy, don't pout,'" Lizzy said. "'You'll find another instrument.'"
Grant said she worked with Kahne every day for about three months recording the 13-track album.
"We were pretty obsessive about it," she said.
Lizzy said she liked that Kahne quickly understood her vision.
She told him she wanted the album to be cinematic. She was also hoping it would reflect her affection for nostalgic things like Coney Island and black and white movies.
"He kind of got my whole vibe right away," she said.
That nostalgia, which often has an eerie tinge to it, is a big part of her vibe. The music videos she has posted on YouTube and MySpace are shot in the style of the '50s and '60s and include plenty of B-roll from that era.
The promotional photographs she posts on her Web sites and provides to the media highlight her platinum-blonde hair and mod-style makeup and feature washed out colors reminiscent of earlier decades.
Much of the nostalgia is heavy on Americana themes, including images of surfing, carnivals and Lizzy dressed as Marilyn Monroe or wearing an American flag and a military ball cap with U.S.A. embroidered on it.
Lizzy's music is difficult to place. Her heady, jazzy voice often sounds like a '50s nightclub singer, and the music at times is highlighted by heavy burlesque-style drumming and cascading wurlitzers.
There is also a modern element to much of it, though. Some songs verge on electronic beats, and her vocals sometimes slide into whispers and minor chords reminiscent of Courtney Love or Fiona Apple.
Grant's MySpace page describes her music as glam/surf/Hawaiian.
"It's been described as a very smoky and provocative kind of voice," her father said. "It kind of catches you off guard. It's not predictable."
The album has been getting some attention, including a review on the Huffington Post Web site and a two-page Q&A in Index Magazine.
"I'm glad I'm singing," Lizzy said. "I don't really know what else I would do."
She plays the guitar and the wurlitzer, but prefers to stick to singing when she's performing a concert because her hands get too nervous. She said she likes to have video of 1950s Las Vegas, Frank Sinatra and similar images to project onto the backdrop so the audience watches that instead of her.
Her venues vary from ballrooms to burlesque clubs to private parties.
She said she doesn't have a single type of costume when she plays a show. She'll vary from going all-out glam to wearing cutoff jean shorts and a white t-shirt.
"If I know it's mostly business people, I will specifically dress down just because I know that it makes the whole show more weird," Lizzy said.
She writes all her own music, and she said her lyrics tend to be a reflection on actual incidents in her life.
"There will be two true verses, then I'll make up the third; just rhyme it out," Grant said.
One of the most catchy songs on "Kill Kill," "Gramma (Blue Ribbon Sparkler Trailer Heaven)," is about a conversation she had with her grandmother, Cynthia Grant, who lives in Lake Placid.
Her father, who has a history in advertising and has been helping his daughter market her album, said it's very exciting to live vicariously through her.
"It's a girl from an upstate New York town who may be on the verge of something great," he said.
Originally published on adirondackdailyenterprise.com with the headline Lizzy Grant aka. Lana Del Ray releases album.

Happy 100th Birthday Benny Hill
Benny Hill, the legendary British comedian, would have turned 100 years old today. He was born on January 21, 1924, in Southampton, England, and began his career as a performer in music halls and radio shows.
Tumblr media
He became famous for his television show, The Benny Hill Show, which ran from 1955 to 1991, and featured his trademark style of slapstick, burlesque, and double entendre. He also starred in several movies, such as The Italian Job, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. He was a talented musician as well, and had a hit song with "Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West)".
Benny Hill's comedy transcended cultural and linguistic boundaries, and was appreciated by fans from all over the world. His show was exported to many countries. I remember when it started playing in syndication on WOR channel 9. After one episode I was addicted and watched him almost every night.
He received several awards, including a BAFTA, a Rose d'Or, and two Emmy nominations. He was also voted number 17 in ITV's poll of TV's 50 Greatest Stars in 2006. His legacy lives on, as his timeless humor continues to inspire and entertain generations of comedians and audiences alike.

A typical ending of a Benny Hill Episode.

Lost Cos Movie Review
Lost Cos, a cinematic journey into the enigmatic world where the realms of cosplay and burlesque converge, weaves a compelling, if overstuffed, narrative around its protagonist, Eni, portrayed with depth and conviction by Evgeniya Radilova. The film delves into the haunted recesses of Eni's past, marked by a turbulent childhood and the tragic loss of her great love, thrusting her into the subterranean sanctuary of Lost Cos—an underground club where the boundaries between fantasy and reality blur in a mesmerizing dance of heroes and villains.
Tumblr media
The absence of "name" actors in the cast might raise eyebrows, but the performances, while somewhat uneven, collectively contribute to the film's overall appeal. Radilova's portrayal of Eni stands as a testament to her acting prowess, as she skillfully navigates the complex emotional terrain of a character grappling with haunting traumas. The audience is invited to witness Eni's metamorphosis from a tormented soul to a formidable force, as she confronts the shadows of her past in the wake of a mysterious death on a New Jersey beach and a disconcerting presence in her DMs.
One of the film's strengths lies in its ability to immerse viewers in the seedy underbelly of the East Coast, portraying a gritty and believable backdrop through meticulously crafted costumes, sets, and an overall visual aesthetic. The world of Lost Cos comes to life with vivid authenticity, creating an atmospheric ambiance that adds depth to the narrative. The club becomes a metaphorical stage for Eni's journey of self-discovery, as she grapples with the dualities of her existence in a realm where escapism meets harsh reality.
While the lack of prominent names in the cast might deter some viewers, the film compensates with a unique and immersive storytelling experience. The supporting cast, despite occasional fluctuations in performance, contributes to the film's overall thematic resonance. The decision to focus on the essence of the story and the authenticity of the characters rather than relying on star power proves to be a bold and commendable choice.
Directed by Laurence Olivier Award and three-time Tony Award-winner Robin de Levita, the film wants to be a sci-fi, action, fantasy, murder mystery, and dramedy. As a consequence, it jumps around between a myriad of subplots. Being a stage and dance director, de Levita naturally leans on his expertise in these areas, giving a huge amount of screentime to long montages and performance sequences. Flashbacks and animation are also thrown into the mix. It was all too much for my taste but I feel there’s an excellent story in there somewhere. Regardless, will definitely appeal to those who love burlesque, sexy dances, and cosplay.
Lost Cos is a cinematic venture that transcends the conventional boundaries of storytelling, delving into the realms of psychological depth, self-discovery, and the blurred lines between fantasy and reality. Evgeniya Radilova's captivating performance, coupled with the film's gritty aesthetic and evocative setting, ensures that the audience is taken on a thought-provoking journey that lingers in the mind after the credits roll. Despite its minor imperfections, Lost Cos emerges as an interesting piece of cinema that celebrates the transformative power of confronting one's demons and emerging stronger on the other side.
youtube
Lost Cos has won over 50 film festival awards and is set to hit theatres on December 8, 2023.

a short list of movies/tv shows that are on constant rotation in my family, but first, my family:
me (25 she/her), my dad (50), my stepmom (42), and my grandpa (73)
the movies/shows we all continuously rewatch:
gilmore girls
across the universe (2007)
burlesque (2010)
psych
veronica mars
waitress (2007)
the rocky horror picture show (1975)
a few fun anecdotes:
my dad, stepmom, and i saw the musical version of Waitress on broadway together but my grandpa saw it when it was still being workshopped in boston.
my 93 year old great-grandmother once walked in on me and my stepmom full out screaming (passionately, but not angry at each other) about the last season of gilmore girls and how the new writers wrote everyone out of character. we somehow had to pretend that we were having a normal conversation.
i have never watched burlesque at a normal hour, it’s always at like midnight or 2 in the morning or 7 AM when i should be getting ready for class that i’ve decided to rewatch that movie. once woke up to get some water and found my dad watching it on his ipad at 4 AM so i suspect it’s hereditary.
my grandpa has entire wall of pineapple paintings because of Psych.
my stepmom sings the Psych theme song when she’s driving.
i’ve been to a play version of the rocky horror picture show with my dad and stepmom and last halloween my grandpa and i went to a midnight viewing of the movie.
when i was in college my stepmom and i briefly ran an airbnb together one summer and anytime it wasn’t booked we’d make popcorn and watch veronica mars there as a “quality check” to make sure it was the coziest environment for our guests.
my grandpa travels a lot work for so he owns like 6 copies of across the universe on DVD and somehow i have 3 of them in my apartment even though i no longer own a DVD player.
my favorite quote from across the universe is “music’s the only thing that makes sense anymore” and i have gotten a minimum of 6 people to watch it from this quote alone.
Hi Nonny! ahhh I love these stories, thank you so much. Isn't it the best thing how stories can connect people across generations?
I love that you can argue with your stepmom about Gilmore Girls and that your grandad has pineapple paintings all over (psych is such a great show to connect people). I have never watched Across the Universe (or even heard of it) so I went and watched the trailer for you. You may just add me as number 7.

[ad_1]  The musical superhit film directed by Nasir Husain featured Asha Parekh, Jeetendra, and Aruna Irani completed 50 years on 5th Nov 2021 and was a super hit in India. You would be surprised to note that it was a super-duper hit in China when it was released eight years after its Indian release. In fact, Caravan, believe it or not, sold 19 million tickets in India – and 100 million tickets in China! One hundred million broke all records in China for a foreign film. One of the earliest Indian films to earn the big bucks in Chinese domestic markets was Raj Kapoor's 1951 Indian classic Awara. released in 1955.Caravan‘s amazing success in China was matched only thirty years later by Nasir Husain's nephew, Amir Khan with his 3 Idiots. The movie’s storyline was nothing great. A runaway heiress joins a passing caravan of gypsies, to escape the villain who murdered her father, then falls in love with the leading man, who eventually rescues her from the villain, etc, etc. The film's plot was loosely inspired by the 1953 film Girl on the Run, a little-known crime drama set against the backdrop of a carnival burlesque show, which was changed to a gypsy show in Caravan.Aruna Irani has a significant role in this film. The traveling troupe featured Madan Puri as the manager and a young Aruna Irani as the star performer Nisha. In fact, Irani nearly stole the show from the film’s heroine with her animated performances in the songs 'Chadhti Jawaani Meri Chaal Mastani', 'Dilbar Dil Se Pyaare' and ‘Ab Joh Mile Hain Toh’.The screenplay of the film was provided by Bhowmick, but the treatment of the film was all Husain, who turned it into the entertainer that it was. According to the film's star Asha Parekh in her biography The Hit Girl, Caravan happened accidentally. The highlight of the film was its music, composed by R D Burman, and lyrics by Mazrooh Sultanpuri. In Caravan, there was a song for every mood. There was the soft romantic duet ‘Kitna Pyaara Waada’, the road song ‘Goriya Kahaan Tera Desh Re’, the goofy performance number ‘Daiya Yeh Main Kahaan Aa Phasi’, and, of course, the most famous of them all, the cabaret track, ‘Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja’ picturized on Helen, which brought singer Asha Bhosle her third Filmfare award for Best Female Playback Singer.Even after 50 years, the film is still refreshing, if you have not seen the film,i recommend you to see it today. If you liked this Blog, you would also appreciate my Youtube Channel, link is given belowhttps://youtu.be/ZEnEKZcyPjI[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEnEKZcyPjI[/embed][embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbXhA0iZrlw[/embed][embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdOWDrvOt-A[/embed]All Songs of Caravan [ad_2] Source link

Hiya! I’ve been extremely interested in Cdrama’s as of late and the costumes! Now in some of these dramas there are dancing scenes. But I saw that not all the dancing scenes are done in chinese clothes. I saw one scene where they wore a ‘bedlah’. Can I get your input wether this is just modern aesethic or not. Thank you for your time in answering our asks!
Hi, thanks for the question!
I know what you’re referring to - in Chinese historical costume (guzhuang) dramas, you can occasionally see characters wearing bedlahs or bedlah-like outfits for dance scenes. Example below - a character wearing bedlah for a dance scene in historical Cdrama Myth of Sword (x):
Tumblr media
Bedlahs typically show up as dance costumes in historical Cdramas for the following reasons:
To give the dance a seductive/sensual air (of course this can be achieved with Chinese clothing, but bedlahs add an additional element of mystery and/or “exoticness”)
To suggest/signify Xiyu influence. Xiyu (西域), lit. “Western Regions”, was a historical name specified in the Chinese chronicles between the 3rd century BC to the 8th century AD that referred to the regions west of Yumen Pass, most often Central Asia or sometimes more specifically the easternmost portion of it (e.g. Altishahr or the Tarim Basin in southern Xinjiang), though it was sometimes used more generally to refer to other regions to the west of China as well, such as the Indian subcontinent (as in the novel Journey to the West)
For example, Tang dynasty-set Cdrama Beauties in the Closet features a bedlah dance scene, in which animal spirits disguised as women perform a dance to seduce the emperor (x). The Tang dynasty is famous for its Silk Road trade route that enabled strong relations with the empires to its west (ex: Byzantine, Persian, Arabian). The Tang capital Chang'an became an international metropolis, and foreign clothing & hairstyles became trendy. In Chang’an and Luoyang, Turkish and Persian fashions were highly sought after (x). Thus, the bedlahs in this scene serve to emphasize the seductiveness of the dance, as well as make a nod to the multicultural nature of Tang society:

Another example comes from the historical Cdrama The Great Dunhuang, which is based on the history of the oasis city of Dunhuang, which lies on the ancient Silk Road. In this scene, Meiduo, a princess from the ancient Kingdom of Khotan, dances a feitian (apsara) dance in feitian costume (x). Feitian costumes as depicted in Chinese media have similarities with bedlah, as can be seen below:

With all that said, though, the use of bedlahs in historical Cdrama costuming is still a modern aesthetic, due to the simple fact that the bedlah as we know it today is a modern 20th-century Egyptian belly dance costume influenced by European theatrical attire (1/2):
“The bedlah is essentially a Westernized creation, though not a wholly Western creation. What really cinched its iconic popularity in dance was the golden age of Egyptian Cinema in the 50s-70s, when Egyptian movies still largely cast professional dancers for dance roles. These Egyptian dancers, directors, and costumers sought inspiration from Hollywood and American culture - the bedlah is basically an Egyptianized iteration of the types of costuming that American dancers and showgirls were wearing. (Think Vegas, burlesque, cabaret, lounge and nightclub culture, in addition to movies/popular music culture.)” (Source)
Needless to say, this particular type of outfit did not even exist prior to the 1900s, much less during the Tang dynasty.
So why do they show up in historical Cdramas? As I’ve mentioned many times before (1/2/3), historical Chinese dramas tend to take a lot of liberties in their costume design. And indeed, this is one of those cases. I chalk it up to a combination of trying to appeal to modern audience’s aesthetics/expectations & lack of resources/attention. Researching & creating historically accurate outfits is a lot more difficult than slapping on a bedlah and calling it a day. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
To be fair, this misunderstanding is a worldwide phenomenon, not just a Chinese one. For example, I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that Disney’s depiction of Princess Jasmine in a bedlah in Aladdin played a huge role in propagating the perception that the bedlah was an actual “ancient” historic outfit. This influence is especially noticeable in the recent Chinese “Xiyu aesthetic” fashion trend. Below are two Xiyu-style outfits with the theme “Loulan Princess” (the Loulan Kingdom was an ancient kingdom based around an important oasis city along the Silk Road) (x):

The “Princess Jasmine effect” is quite strong, wouldn’t you say? :P

If anyone wants to share more information, please do. Hope this helps!
