“1950s horror movies contrast radically with their 1940s predecessors. understandably – they were reflecting a whole new world. audiences wanted stories that connected directly to their lives, to the ever-expanding technology in their homes and workplaces. they also wanted horror movies that played to their fears – stoked by politicians – of the shadows that lay beyond their immediate, personal experience of the shiny american dream (applies to some of these movies).”

Atomic Terato-Mash (ATM as in Atom)
Just in time for Halloween!
The announcement of Tim Burton making a remake of Attack Of the 50 Ft Woman at the beginning of this year, I made drawings that eventually grew into a rough outline for a monsterverse of America's atomic scifi movies, and it really started getting more fleshed out and actually made into a proper universe/setting this month (especially with some discussion with @artmakerproductions). the different characters shown here elaborated upon under the cut
Nancy Archer: yeah yeah you know the drill, close encounter, enlargement because this ain't your average everyday radiation this is a d v a n c e d radiation, enough is enough where's that goddamn cuckoo cuck I'm gonna give him a piece of my mind, power line, zap zap—this just knocks her out though and her new living quarters ends up being Area ??? (Area 51? Area 50? Area Γ? who knows), complete with a new fit that references an outfit of hers in the orginal movie as well as the 58 film's reason for the abduction in the first place with the diamond in the chest of the armor (58 is also her subject designation as a nod to the film's release date) and yeah no I am not giving her heart complications to deal with like the 93 remake did. I am aware that it addresses the logistics and ramification of being 10 times your original size, but the woman's been through enough as is.

Patricia "Pat" Medford: Initially, this scientist at Area X wasn't even any particular movie character. She was literally just a vague OC, first depicted in the drawing above, to have someone for Nancy to talk to and actually have a friend for once*. Then Artmaker proposed making her the daughter of the scientist from Them! and even tying to 50 Ft with her and Nancy having been schoolmates for years (Nancy also had thoughts of a similar career to Pat, but you know how it is with paternal and spousal peer pressure). *compounded by Artmaker pointing out that the original movie implied Nancy to be a bit of a town pariah (as he put it: "Nancy was pretty much the McGuckett of the town due to her alcoholism and other issues. So for ATM, she'd not have a whole lot of friends by adulthood and thinks no one even really misses or cares what happened following her gigantification incident)
"Macroformica"/Macroodontomachus: yep, this is THEM!—or Gi-ants, as they have also been called (though I am also partial to the name Tit-ants, as in titan). I specifically designed these after trap jaw ants like in the genus Odontomachus because their jaws kinda sorta fit the jaws of the ant models used in the movie and also because they just neat. Artmaker even came up with an explanation as to how a genus typically found in Asia and Africa wound up in New Mexico to get nuked and irradiated: The existence of a Hollow Earth, which is also home to species like Rhedosaurus (The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms), Paleosaurus (The Giant Behemoth) and Reptilicus. Said hollow earth also caught the mind of Pat's father, Dr. Harold Medford, who took to studying ants to find out the key to discovering the Hollow Earth. As for this particular one, a scout that would be named Annie, She was the one to first make contact with humanity not as a predator, but as something that the ants had become with their increased size and therefore brain mass: a Sophont species.

Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman is the 1993 remake made for HBO which has a great pedigree including an atypical directing turn from Guest but….man is this weird! It pushes both the feminism and cheesecake angles of the original to new areas but its Your Dad’s Feminism so it’s still a little difficult. The women in this are good, the sheriff is pretty good, and Daniel Baldwin needs to be thrown into a volcano. Weird way to end September but here we are.
