May Day Philadelphia, PA, 2025. Someone's got a One Piece flag. (I think the speaker right now is someone from the AFL-CIO).

The 50501 Movement
Steven Martinez Why Protesting Matters—Even When It Feels Like It Doesn’t. I’ve been asked by a few friends: Why do you protest? What do think that will accomplish? Here is the WHY: I protest because I am American and it’s my right to make my voice heard when I have a grievance with the way in which I and others are being governed. I stand FIRMLY ON FIRST AMENDMENT soil: The First Amendment says: “Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of speech… or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Here is the What:
Protesting is a SIGNAL. It tells the powerful: We see you. We do not consent. And we’re not going quietly. Protesting is PRESSURE. It reveals unrest. It slows the machine. It makes those in power hesitate, recalibrate, and look over their shoulder. There are 350 million people in this country. Even if only a third rise up—that’s over 100 million voices. That is not a whisper. That is a roar. That’s momentum—at the ready—just waiting to be activated. And listen—protesting is like calling the manager over to the table. You’re not flipping tables (yet). You’re calmly, clearly saying: “This service is unacceptable. Something needs to change.” And the moment you say it? Everyone around starts watching. Listening. It forces them to question their own silence—like yeah… this burger DOES suck. But protesting isn’t just pressure—it’s power. It’s like a pep rally before the big game. It channels energy. Unites voices. Raises morale. It reminds those fighting for democracy that they’re not alone. It shows the world WE are NOT complicit. We are not done. We will not stop. Protesting sends a message—to lawmakers, donors, and global eyes: There is resistance here. There is still a line and you will feel it if you cross it. There are still American patriots not taking a knee who are still fighting for freedom and democracy. Even when it doesn’t spark instant change, protesting can block radical moves, can rally the weary, and can plant seeds that bloom when the next window of opportunity opens. So don’t let anyone tell you protesting is pointless. It’s strategy. It’s power. It’s a reminder: We the people are aware. We the people are still here. We the people know our rights. We the people are not afraid. We the people do not consent. We the people do not condone. We the people do not capitulate. And we the people are not done.
You must never forget that almost every right we have in this country—was won through protesting. The labor movement? Protesting. The Civil Rights Act? Protesting. Women’s right to vote? Protesting. Marriage equality? Protesting. Disability rights? Protesting. Child labor laws? Protesting. Environmental protections? Protesting. Minimum wage? Protesting. Anti-war momentum? Protesting. Even the damn Tea Party started with protest. So don’t believe the hype. Protesting IS the blueprint. It’s how we bend the arc of history—one raised voice at a time. - Pru Pru

"Hands Off!" Protest, New York City, April 5th, 2025. The "Hands Off!" Protest is the first in a series of nationwide mass protests against the actions of the Trump administration. The focus of this protest was to send a message that there should be no cuts to essential government programs that the people need. Donald Trump and Elon Musk have convinced Trump voters that the only way for the United States government to "save money" is by cutting services that ordinary working-class Americans need, such as Social Security, Medicare, the National Weather Service, FEMA, the National Parks Service, and other programs and agencies. Rational individuals understand that if the country were in such dire straits and desperately in need of cash (it's not), then raising taxes on billionaires and multi-billion dollar corporations that do business here would be the sensible way to address any national financial shortfalls. To take away things from people who already have very little, or to remove safety nets designed to help people in times of tragedy makes absolutely no sense when billionaires could be taxed appropriately -- and they'd still be billionaires. Of course, the truth is that the crisis is made up for the purpose of dismantling the government and consolidating political power. The protests were a resounding success, not only in New York City which saw thousands of people take over 5th Avenue, but all across the country. Turnout was much higher than anticipated, and many protestors are looking forward to hitting the streets again in the near future. --PWH3

Rachel Maddow surveys some of the many "No Kings" protests that took place in cities large and small across the United States against Donald Trump's push toward autocracy, and notes that unlike previous remarkable protest days, this one was given prominent attention by major news outlets.

Stephen Miller calls schools “Marxist camps.” Trump promises purges. Loyalty tests. Book bans… It’s not policy, it’s fascism. Thank a teacher. Then defend them!
