what’s construction on sunset?

OH BROTHER, i am honestly honored to get to explain this. unfortunately i’m going to reference a lot of meta and commentary that i don’t actually have links or access to but trust me that im a reliable source for what was going on in the fandom in season four.

so in episode 4x08 eddie comes home from a date with ana and the following dialogue ensues between buck and eddie “you’re late!” “there was construction on sunset” and … brother i can’t tell you what was in the water but things went bonkers. it was like if couch theory had absolutely no canon basis or reasoning.

basically what all the discussion boiled down to was that the construction represented buddie being “in progress”. there was a lot of pulling of sunset imagery from buck and eddie scenes to show how the line could relate to them (of which there is MUCH more of now which is why there’s a resurgance in people referencing the theory)

and then when eddie got shot it kinda got a second life because the concept of “construction” while eddie was in the hospital was a lot. anyway it’s just a rly funny inside joke that is silly to bring up as a short hand for delusion lmao. also i have a t shirt that says there was construction on sunset (shoutout to that etsy seller if you’re still on 911blr hello!) and i wear it whenever i want to manifest a buddie scene

buck is the other dad but tptb wont show that to us

Well of course they won't. Those moments are gonna have to wait until something "big" happens to Buddie again. I feel like it's worth pointing out that, aside from the 3A stuff - where Buck was fresh out of a relationship and Eddie was grieving Shannon - and the 4x03 video game scene, all the moments that we look at as Buddie being legit co-parents prior to this season happened when there was a potential/real love interest in the picture. "You two have an adorable son." -> Eddie and Shannon are "back together" by the end of the episode. Skateboarding storyline -> We first meet Ana and Carla comments on Eddie's attraction to her

Buck showing concern over Chris attending summer camp/Buckley-Diaz fam at May's grad party -> Buck "reunites" with Abby and is finally able to let that time in his life go Eddie going home to Buck (and Chris) in 4x08 -> After a date with Ana Chris sneaking off to see Buck and Buck reassuring him that he's "not going anywhere." -> Still in 4x08, therefore Eddie is still with Ana, and also...TayKay made her grand return by the time that convo made it onto our screens. "Can't you both be good cops?" "No." -> Ana is still around Shooting arc -> Eddie and Ana still a thing; by the end of s4 BT is officially canon Chris visiting Buck and Eddie at the firehouse during the blackout -> Ana was standing right there Buddie convo at Christmastime about Chris's nightmare -> Buck is still in a relationship The 5x11 dinner scene was Buck, Eddie, Chris...and TayKay Eddie's PTSD/breakdown arc happened while BT was still holding on for dear life and after Buck had kissed Lucy (and also after Buck admitting to cheating on his gf with a woman! Actually specified the gender!) Though the lack of family moments is frustrating to the point of annoyance, I can't say it's surprising when the show has nothing to rely on for plausible deniability.

“I will never leave you”- Buddie oneshot

This oneshot is basically what happened in the 4x08 but if Eddie and Buck were together, because once I saw the "you're late" scene I immediately knew I had to write something There are some lines from the episode, and honestly I feel like half of it is pretty awkward and doesn't make much sense, but I like it so whatever haha

Buck heard the car pull into the driveway. He knew it was Eddie, who was running some errands and asked Buck to watch Christopher after work. He got up and walked towards the door to greet him.

By the time he got to the door, Eddie was already inside, carrying bags with groceries. Buck leaned against the doorframe, and smiled.

“You’re late.” he said, while Eddie dropped the bags and started to take off his jacket. Eddie actually set the exact time he would be back, because he wanted to tuck his son in, and then spend the evening with Buck. But he ran a little late, and Buck will never pass up an opportunity to tease him.

“There was construction on Sunset. Had to take a detour.” Eddie answered, putting his jacked on the rack. 

“Or maybe you were on a date or something?” Buck asked teasingly, amusement clear on his face. They went through similar conversations before they got together, back when Eddie went back to dating.

“Ha. Ha.” Eddie rolled his eyes. Then, he added softly: “You know the only person I’d want to be on a date with stands in front of me.”

“Aw, you’re such a sap.” Buck’s smile widened, but before Eddie could react, he added: “But your answer is correct.” he leaned towards Eddie, who immediately understood, and leaned in to leave a quick, sotf kiss on Buck’s lips. “Missed you.” Buck murmured, as Eddie was pulling away.

“And who’s a sap now?” Eddie raised his eyebrows, a teasing smirk on his face, because they’d seen each other just a few hours ago. But he missed Buck too, to be honest. He leaned down to pick up bags with groceries that he had dropped before. “You wanna help me with those?” he asked, as he struggled to grip all of them, while Buck just kept leaning against the doorframe and looking at him.

“Not really.” Buck said and Eddie looked back at him with a disbelieving look on his face. “What? If you were on time, I’d help.” he shrugged, a smug look on his face.

“Fine. I’ll remind you of this next time you’re late.” Eddie said, finally picking them all up.

“I’m kidding.” Buck sighed and rolled his eyes, walking over to Eddie and taking half of the groceries. “Why is there so much stuff here, anyway? Did you buy a whole supermarket?” he asked as they carried it to the kitchen.

“Just some groceries.” Eddie put the bags on the counter and started to unpack them. Buck started to help, too. “Christopher already asleep?”

“No, but he’s in bed. It was tough, but we negotiated a deal. He got ready for bed, and I wasn’t allowed to turn off the light or tell him a story. He was waiting for you, but you were late.” he said pointedly. 

“I know.” Eddie stopped unpacking the bags and looked at Buck with annoyance, but there was fondness there too. That was his Buck. He could annoy him and tease him to no end, but Eddie loved him more than he could express. “Thanks for taking care of him.” he added, more softly.

“It’s a pleasure.” Buck said proudly. “He’s my best friend.” he grinned.

“What?” Eddie frowned, but he was smiling. “Then what am I?” Buck gave him a look in response, and Eddie just laughed. “Okay, fine. He’s your best friend, whatever.” he shook his head, starting to put things away to cabinets, while Buck was putting stuff in the fridge. 

“And I am his best friend, just so you know.” Buck added, his tone still teasing.

“And I’m more than happy about that.” Eddie looked at him. “I’m his dad, I can get over him liking you more than me.” 

“Good.” Buck said. 

“Actually, I’ve been thinking.” Eddie said, suddenly nervous, his gaze focused on the package of pasta in his hands. 

“Should I be worried?” Buck asked carefully and Eddie could feel his gaze.

“No, no. Of course not.” Eddie quickly said, putting the pasta on the shelf, but still not moving his gaze. “It’s just… we’ve been dating for a while. And we know that Chris loves you.” he stopped, swallowing hard.

“And you want to tell him.” Buck said slowly, basically finishing Eddie’s sentence. “About us.”

Eddie suddenly turned around, facing Buck. His eyes were wide and he was chewing on his lower lip out of nerves. Then he took a deep breath.

“Yeah, I do.” he said. “If you wanna. I mean, I think he’d take it well. He knows you and- and loves you.” if he was this nervous just talking to Buck about it, he was going to be a mess telling Christopher. Maybe he wasn’t as ready as he thought. “And he knows that you’re always gonna be there for him.” it was a statement, but there was some kind of a question hidden there, in his tone and his eyes. 

Buck walked over to Eddie and took his face into his hands. 

“Hey, of course I will.” he said. “And I am totally on board with telling him. But right now, let me unpack the rest, and you go say goodnight to your son, so that he can finally go to sleep, because he has school tomorrow.” Buck smiled fondly. “And then we will talk some more, okay?”

“Yeah. Yeah, okay.” Eddie chuckled lightly, a little embarrassed at his nervousness. He shook his head and walked away from Buck, into his son’s room. They will be fine. They will tell Chris and he’s gonna be fine with them being together. Or so Eddie was trying to convince himself. But that wasn’t what he had to worry about just then. He would talk it over with Buck first, and then they would find the right moment to tell Chris. It would be fine.

They decided to tell him a few days later. 

Buck was constantly saying that if Eddie wasn’t ready, he was fine with waiting. But even though Eddie was really nervous, he felt like he needed to do this. He needed to be honest with his son. And he really wanted to be able to hold Buck’s hand when they all go out together, or cuddle with Buck when they have a movie night, and all the other stuff he’s not able to do now. He wanted to be able to act like he felt - like he was head over heels for Buck - and he didn’t want to hide anymore. Especially not from the most important person in his world.

So after watching a movie Friday night, instead the usual “time to get ready for bed,” Eddie told Chris:

“We wanted to talk to you about something.” 

“Okay.” Christopher answered, looking up at Eddie, who was silent for a long while, gathering his thoughts.

“So.” Eddie started. “Um, I wanted to ask you…” he looked at Buck, who was sitting on the other side of Christopher. He looked back at Eddie and he knew that if he wanted to back away, Buck would be cool with it. But he needed to say it. He just wasn’t sure how, despite preparing for the last couple of days. “How would you feel about me, uh, dating-” he said very slowly, hearing his heartbeat in his ears. Before he could even say Buck’s name, Chris interrupted him.

“No! I don’t want you to date!” he exclaimed.

“Hey, listen to me.” Eddie tried, but Chris got up from the couch before Eddie could realize that he should have approached it differently. “Chris.” he said as Chris started to walk away.

“Hey, buddy. Wait a second.” Buck spoke up and Chris stopped and looked at him. Then he looked to Eddie to continue. 

“Look, the person I’m dating is Buck.” Eddie said with a smile. “It’s not some random stranger. It’s our Buck, okay?” he hoped that the mere fact that it was his best friend, whom Chris knew and loved, would be enough to make him less angry.

“No. You can’t date Buck!” Chris said, even angrier now. Both Buck and Eddie looked at each other with surprise and worry. They were hoping he would be happy about that. “You can’t! I’m mad at both of you!” he added, before walking away.

Buck and Eddie sat there in silence for a while, not moving. Finally, Eddie spoke up.

“That was so not how I expected it to go.” he said.

“Yeah, somehow I hoped he’d, you know, not hate us.” Buck said, looking at Eddie. “I’m sorry.”

“What for?” Eddie frowned. “It’s not your fault.”

“Isn’t it?” Buck sighed. “I’m the person you’re dating. And he’s your kid and he’s mad at you for dating.”

“He’s mad at both of us, if I remember correctly.” Eddie said, trying to sound lighter than he did. “He’ll be fine. We’ll be fine.” he took Buck’s hand and intertwined their fingers. 

“But if he really doesn’t want us to be together, I-”

“No, don’t say it.” Eddie interrupted. “I’m not losing you, in any way.” he said, because even if they could go back to just being friends, which would probably be slightly, or very, awkward, he didn’t want that. He knew Chris would come around. He had to. They were already a family, they’ve been a family since before he and Buck started dating. They couldn’t just… break up. “He’ll calm down and I’ll try to talk to him again. It can’t be about you.” he added with a frown. “He loves you, he wouldn’t be mad about that.”

Buck didn’t answer. He got up and let go of Eddie’s hand. Before Eddie could ask where he was going, Buck just said: “I’ll be right back.” and went towards Christopher’s room. Eddie just sat there, trusting that Buck knows what he’s doing. He’s always been good with Chris, and he had a connection with him, so surely he would be able to talk to Chris, even though the boy was mad at him.

First, Buck knocked on the door, but didn’t hear an answer.

“Hey, it’s Buck. Can I come in?” he asked. 

“No.” Chris said, and Buck sighed.

“Hey, I just wanna talk. Give me two minutes. No longer, I swear.”

“Okay.” the boy answered after a while. 

Buck opened the door and found Chris sitting on his bed, clearly upset. He sat down next to him.

“So you’re really mad at us, huh?” Buck asked, not sure how exactly to approach the topic.

“I don’t wanna talk about it.” Chris answered, looking at the floor.

“We gotta talk about it sooner or later. And your dad’s not here right now. Whatever you say, I promise it’ll stay between us.” Christopher didn’t answer. “Come on, we’re friends, right? You can talk to me.” he gently nudged him with his elbow. “I know that it might be a little weird at first. But not much will change, I swear.”

“I don’t want anything to change.” Christopher said. 

“What exactly you don’t want to change?” Buck asked, having a faint idea of what it might be about.

“For you to leave.” the boy admitted quietly. “Everybody leaves now, abuelita, Carla, my friends... and mom was with dad and she still left. And what if you break up and you leave too?”

“Buddy.” Buck put his arm around him. “Yeah, people go away. And it’s sad. But not everyone goes away forever. You will see your friends, Carla and abuelita soon. And I will never leave you. I love your dad. And I love you.” he couldn’t help a small smile. “We won’t break up. But even if we do…” he added as Chris was about to say something. “I will never leave you, okay? I’m not going anywhere, ever. I’m always here for you, no matter what.”

“Do you promise?” he heard Chris whisper.

“I promise.” Buck said sincerely, catching Chris’ small smile.

They sat there in silence for a while, and then Buck felt Chris move and nestle up against Buck’s side. 

“Thanks, Buck. You’re a good friend.” Christopher said. “And if you’re not gonna leave, then I’m happy for you and dad.” 

“That means more than anything, kid.” Buck exhaled with relief.

After a couple more minutes they got back to the living room, where Eddie was anxiously waiting on the couch. He looked at the smile on Chris’ face and looked relieved, but also a little confused.

“Hi.” he said, crouching down to Christopher’s eye level. “What’s that smile?”

“You and Buck are boyfriends.” Chris said happily. Eddie looked up at Buck with surprise. Buck shrugged and smiled innocently.

“What did you talk about in there?” Eddie asked, his tone surprised, a wide smile on his face.

“That’s private.” Buck said, sitting down on the couch. Eddie raised his eyebrow. “What? We can have our secrets.”

“Really?” Eddie’s gaze landed on his son again. Chris laughed.

“You don’t have to know everything.” he said and Eddie scoffed with surprise and amusement.

“I’m gonna leave that for now.” Eddie said, getting up. He had enough of arguing for one night. He was just happy that if Chris doesn’t want to talk to him about something, he’ll always have Buck to turn to. “I guess it’s time for bed.” he said. 

As Chris went to get ready for bed, Eddie walked over to Buck and kissed him briefly. “You’re a miracle worker.”

“All I did was talk to him.” Buck rolled his eyes with a smile. Eddie just kissed him one more time. He was so glad that Buck and Chris have such a great relationship. And that he had a partner, who was going to be there with him and his son.

“Thank you.” he whispered, then going to check on Chris.

Then both Eddie and Buck went to tuck Chris in and tell him a story together.

He heavily sat on the couch, sighing. Buck chuckled, sitting next to him, and running his hand through Eddie’s hair.

“It was an emotional evening.” Buck said.

“Yeah.” Eddie chuckled, wrapping his arms around Buck and hiding his face in his neck. “Wanna tell me what you and Chris talked about?”

“Nope.” Buck said and Eddie raised his head to look at him. “Just be happy he’s good with us now.”

“Whatever, I’m too tired right now.” he put his head back down, feeling Buck’s hand play with his hair.

“Maybe you should just go to sleep?” Eddie made a small sound of agreement. “Okay. So go, and I will see you tomorrow at work, alright?” at that Eddie sat back up with a frown. “What?”

“Why don’t you just stay the night?” he suggested with a shrug. They’ve been dating for a while, but with Chris, if Buck would stay over, they would sleep separately, just in case. But Eddie just felt like falling asleep in the arms of the man he loves, and his son finally knew about their relationship, so he felt like he could have this.

“Sure.” Buck smiled.

“And by that I mean, in my bed, not on the couch.” Eddie clarified, and Buck chuckled, rolling his eyes.

Eddie got up and took Buck’s hand, pulling him to himself. When Buck was standing too, Eddie kissed him deeply. “I love you.” he whispered.

“I love you too, Eddie.” Buck said softly, and chuckled again as Eddie yawned. “C’mon, let’s go to bed.” he intertwined their fingers and led Eddie to the bedroom. 

As Eddie was falling asleep, Buck’s arms wrapped around him, he felt happier than ever. The difficult evening had a happy ending, and now he didn’t have to hide his happiness from his son, who was fine with them dating. And he thought that maybe, sometime soon, he would ask Buck to move in with them. He was more than sure of their relationship and he knew that both he and Chris would love to have Buck around more. Besides, Eddie has never fallen asleep faster and has never been more comfortable, than with Buck in his bed.

This is my Eddie gif of the day:

This one Christopher line shattered me to pieces, This was exactly what Eddie needed to hear in order to figure out exactly what they both need.

He was afraid that everything his parents said was true, that him being away means that Christopher doesn't know him, will feel better staying with his grandparents.

Eddie asking if Christopher missed him when he was gone, was Eddie's most vulnerable moment, this was the make or break answer and Christopher being the sweetest, most precious, miracle child that he is somehow knew exactly what to say.

That's when Eddie decided to take his kid somewhere he can raise him in a different way than the one he knew. Away from the judgment, away from his parents' critical eyes, away from the memories of a failed marriage.

They both needed a fresh start, obviously Eddie had hope that he may, at some point, be able to mend things with Shannon, that's why he chose LA, but after the first few weeks there, he didn't contact her until he absolutely had to.

Which made me question whether or not he would have at all if the school didn't demand her presence. - But that's another post entirely.

In my opinion Eddie took everything his parents did with him and said - this will fall under the "Fuck no, don't do" column.

And it worked wonderfully, if you ask me, he raised a sweet, happy, polite, wise, brave (read badass) and loving kid. Eddie wanting better for Christopher is one of the reasons I absolutely adore Eddie's character. ❤❤❤

Bonus:

Guys do you remember how in season 4 they talked about the universe sending messages?

In 4x06 when the crew are trapped in the firetruck Buck says to Eddie, “it’s like the universe is screaming at you and you refuse to listen”. Eddie responds, “the universe does not scream.”

Then in 4x08 Buck and Taylor are talking through that whole stand off with the guy on the roof thing and Buck talks about how he's finally ready for a “meaningful relationship”. To which Taylor responds with, “you ever think maybe you need to be patient and let the universe come to you?”

Having both characters be told they need to listen to the messages the universe is sending them seems far too coincidental especially in light of all the other evidence we have that Buddie is going canon.

It just feels like they weren’t ready to listen yet. Buck wants a meaningful relationship and he’s been looking for it in all the wrong places. Eddie has shut down and he’s put distance between him and Buck. Then you have what Carla said about following his heart, the shooting (involving Buck and the reveal of the will), his panic attacks all the universe screaming at him and Eddie refusing to listen.

Which is why I think we will at the very least get Eddie’s oh moment by the end of season 5. Eddie realizing that Buck has been the one all along. Something like this:

This analysis centers primarily on 5x14 Bloody Valentine.  The title of course is a semi-homage to a 3D Slasher Film Jensen starred in circa 2009.

ANYWAY, it’s truly Cursed that not only are we doing an homage to this 3-D Jensen Horror Date Flick but also this episode is specifically centered on Valentine’s Day.  The day honoring romance and love Now Coopted by Hallmark, everyone, that is the day spn writers chose to introduce us to 

Sir Horseman of THE Biblical Apocalypse Famine. 

Canonically, we are aware that the show is drawing from the book of Revelations in its depiction of the Four Horsemen.  Here’s what it says about Famine -

"When He broke the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, "Come." I looked, and behold, a black horse; and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand.”

-Revelations 6:5

Famine holds scales (used to weigh out grain in times of food scarcity).  Spn’s depiction is represented as hunger, a bottomless pit of need.  It consumes souls (demon and human alike).  

Cas describes Famine a little more poetically:

CASTIEL 

"And then will come Famine riding on a black steed. He will ride into the land of plenty... "

"... and great will be the Horseman's hunger, for he is hunger. "

"His hunger will seep out and poison the air. "

***Consider a prior season in which we are introduced to the Seven Deadly Sins.  Which are the sins associated with hunger?

Gluttony

and Lust.

Back to the episode.  Case cold open, and we find out that Alice was a Nice Girl.  In that she didnt drink, smoke or

have premarital sex.

***So Alice’s hunger for the sin of Lust caused her to succumb to it; and her demise was presented as Gluttony (literally eating her partner’s flesh). HMM

Famine’s presence is affecting the town, and Cas is not immune.

And when did you start eating?

CASTIEL 

Exactly. My hunger-- it's a clue, actually.

***but that’s not accurate.  they didn’t get married or become obsessed with each other (remember the cursed coin in 4x08 Wishful Thinking and the unconditional love wish? not what happened here). they had premarital sex.  they did the thing Alice considers wrong, and dark, and sinful.  and then they ate each others’ flesh.

Okay, but what about you? I mean, since when do angels secretly hunger for White Castle?

CASTIEL 

It's my vessel-- Jimmy. His, uh, appetite for red meat has been touched by Famine's effect

***mad lad Jimmy Novak’s hunger is for...red meat?  He is starving for red meat?  You are telling me that the Novaks, red blooded conservative religious midwestern Novaks, ate RED MEAT SO SPARINGLY that Jimmy Novak was LITERALLY starving for it?!?!  No way.  Absolutely no way.  This is a man who was such a religious zealot he STUCK HIS HAND IN BOILING WATER and accepted an angel of the lord into his own body but his secret hunger was for fucking ground beef?

give me a damn break.

to me this is an absolute coverup.  Because Cas’s burger consumption is not related one iota to his vessel Jimmy Novak.

it is a representation of Cas falling.  Cas’s cravings for meat represent his growing (and very much prohibited) feelings for...humanity (Dean Winchester), and they are presenting as Gluttony in the form of his downing more and more copious amounts of red meat.  

SERIOUSLY, consider this - at one point the depiction is so desperately carnal that he is eating raw ground beef with his bare hands. It is fucking uncomfortable.  and it is SUPPOSED to be.  Famine stirs up hunger for the prohibited.  For the sinful. That which we are starving for but do not believe we can ever have, so we lust and we lust and we LUST after it, but should we allow ourselves even just a taste of what we have been ravenously craving, we binge it until we ourselves disappear into the oblivion of our own sinful, dark desires.

Since You Want More Examples of why this cant possibly be hunger for Cheeseburgers and Cheeseburgers alone, Consider Famine’s effect on Dean.  Remember his doctor kink?

thoughts on the canonical possibility of buddie?

okay, i have a LOT of thoughts lol, so enjoy the ride!

let me start off by saying that i'm actually pretty optimistic about buddie possibly becoming canon. i know it might seem like a long shot to some, but i have a good feeling about this!

i think it's pretty obvious by now (and i'm pretty sure that the writers and directors must have realized it too) that having canon buddie would really be the easiest direction for the show to go.

it saves on the problem of having the introduce more characters, especially with the main ensemble being pushed to it's limits.

the show doesn't have to deal with the main problem that will undoubtedly arise if buck and eddie got other love interests: a) introducing female characters and giving them zero development, this reducing them to mere love interests and irritating the audience by the misogyny of it all, or b) developing these characters but at the cost of the screentime of the main ensemble, thus annoying the audience bc we're obviously going to be more invested in the mains. having canon buddie wouldn't pose either of those problems.

911? would? literally? make history? to my knowledge, there's no other tv show that would have this level of build up and slow burn for a queer couple. the longest build up i've ever seen for a queer couple has been like...little over one season. and don't get me wrong, a lot of these ships are adorable and amazing even without the build up, but let's admit it, something about a long slow burn is infinitely more satisfying. a lot of iconic het couples on tv have had extremely long slow burns, spanning over mny seasons, and it's pretty frustrating that that much development is never put into queer couples. 911 would be a first!

this introduces the potential for so many new storylines; buck and eddie coming to terms with their sexuality, eddie having to deal with his conservative family knowing about it (because i project upon him lol and he really has been raised with that sort of traditional nuclear family mindset), the logistics of dating your coworker that they'll inevitably have to deal with and so many other things that i can't even think of right now.

i really do think we're heading in that direction, there have been so many Choices™ made in terms of directing, writing and acting made by now that it really can't be a coincidence. look at season 4 alone. they've taken the time and effort to kind of solidify buck's position as part of the diaz family unit, despite how jam packed the season has been with the addition of a new regular and all it's different plotlines. they've established twice that chris has a line to buck outside of eddie. 4x08, despite how much everyone hated it was in some ways a gold mine, it contrasted so clearly the comfortable domesticity of eddie coming home to buck and chatting about chris and his bedtime routine as compared to eddie's awkward af date with ana (where they flirted over math of all things) and that scene at the end of ana meeting chris which felt so forced, rushed and out of the blue. like...there's no way the writers aren't seeing this. these details are not that hard to notice and they've been planning and plotting the storylines for ages, not to mention they're literally trained for all this.

almost every single one of buck and eddie's storylines parallel each other to the point where it simply can't be by chance anymore! their dating storylines with ali and ana were practically identical to the point where some of the dialogue was actually repeated! buck has been paralleled to shannon on numerous occasions, most notably during the lawsuit arc. i'm sure i'm missing out on a lot of stuff. all the gifsets in the world wouldn't be enough to bring out the parallels in their character arcs.

so yeah, i do believe buddie is a long con, and they're actually heading towards being canon. is it naive of me? possibly, but i don't think i'm being overly optimistic here. i'm not even someone who usually picks up on these nuances in while watching shows, at least not immediately, but i was picking them up all the time while watching 911. so i am fairly optimistic about this. we just need to be patient about this and accept that there's a lot of things in both buck and eddie's storylines that need to be resolved before they'll even be ready for another serious relationship...this time with each other.

Sooo... I've seen some ppl on Tumblr mention the little magnet figures on Eddie's fridge during the breakup scene. How the three figures holding hands are eddie buck and chris in colors of their shirts form 4x14 welcome party, and 2 other red figures on the side are ana and Taylor. At first I was like lol, these ppl are just a tad bit looking too much into it. BUT then I went to look for pics of Eddie's fridge haha. And I've found one from I think 4x08 when he's in the kitchen with christ and chris breaks the salad bowl. The magnet figures look different, they're in no spec order, just scattered around and there's also a purple one. So now this placement of figures in 5x03 looks deliberate? Like why mess with those figures, why rearrange them and in that specific way if it means nothing. Just something I found very interesting... like I understand that there are ppl in charge of interior decor of the set haha, those places have to look like houses ppl live in, but why mess with magnets on the fridge, no one would've noticed them otherwise if they were as before and just there. But this, this we noticed, someone from crew had to go out and do that, connect the three green blue and yellow figures in a half circle and put those red ones on the side. Very sus, Just saying...

Oooo you know what's funny, in going over the breakup scene I noticed the magnets and immediately went to go find the other scenes I could remember that took place in Eddie's kitchen. And I thought their placement was interesting but didn't pick up on what you mentioned (about the colors) but the three together in the season where the number 3 has been prevalent so far, and some season 3 arcs are popping up (like Eddie's) is what caught my eye. So great catch, Nonnie!!! =D I'm really glad to hear other people are picking up on it, too. It's so exciting!!! Because I agree with you 1000% and I think it definitely means something:

And this brings me back to the certain placements of animals in 5x01. We get groups of 3 animals in 5x01 but only a single vulture, single giraffe, and a single elephant. Then we get 2 alpacas in 5x02, one who calls her friend for backup. So I think that the set decs and directors definitely do these things on purpose.

We're getting that much closer to canon Buddie and Buddipher endgame, Nonnie. I can feel it. ;-)

Does anyone else feel like there's been a shift in the general attitude towards Buck/Eddie since the end of season 4? I lurk the 911 subreddit sometimes, and that place used to be very "you are RUINING the SANCTITY of PLATONIC MALE FRIENDSHIP" whenever anyone mentioned Buck/Eddie, but recently there have been actual discussions about it, and people seem to take the possibility of them being each other's love interests seriously. That legal guardianship reveal really had an impact lol.

that's really interesting!! i can't speak for anything beyond what i see on my dashboard (which has always been pro-buddie lmao) but speaking from my own perspective, i know my feelings have shifted since 4x14.

i binge-watched up to 4x06 but i very much came into the show with the attitude of i'll enjoy it for what it is but it's never gonna happen. and for all that i adore the quietness of buck and eddie's dynamic in s4 i certainly felt a bit???? off maybe???? around the middle of the season when ana and taylor had both been re-introduced and then, because there were a few eps where neither buck or eddie had a main storyline, we hardly saw them interact at all? (it was the first 3 eps back after the break i think and obviously it's more than okay that other characters were at the forefront in those eps, it was just noticeable in its rarity since we hadn't really had that happen since s2 when shannon was back)

i even made a post around that time about how 911 had written themselves into a corner by keeping buck and eddie single for so long bc now that they both had love interests it was impossible to maintain the balance of the dynamic that we're used to with these two new relationships also. and truth be told i was afraid things were about to go the teen wolf route of, we shipped them too hard now they're never gonna interact ever again akjdfh

obviously treasure hunt happened and it lifted my spirits a lot and we'd sort of figured out eddie would be the one getting shot and look. i'll say it again that if i get right down to it, i don't think the show is gonna make them canon. i don't think that takes away from the integrity of their relationship in any way and i do believe the writers value their dynamic a lot and treat it seriously so that's honestly fine with me.

however.

there are choices that were made in 4x13 and 4x14 that i Cannot explain and that left me genuinely in shock because i didn't think for one second they'd happen. carla commenting on eddie and ana's relationship and suggesting he's not happy (even though we technically had no indication of this prior), the entire framing of the shooting scene and the way they paid equal attention eddie and buck. buck sobbing over eddie when he tried to tell christopher what happened. and obviously the legal guardianship, "because evan" and "you're not expendable" of it all

i can't explain any of that. i can't explain why any of that happened if buck is supposed to be with taylor. i can't explain why our first meaningful episode with ana since 4x08 immediately casts doubts on her and eddie's relationship. i can't explain why they prioritised buck and eddie's relationship over everything else in 4x14 and bound them together even more intrinsically than before. i can't explain all the parallels between buck and taylor's scenes and buck and eddie's scenes in 4x14. and tbh i'm still reeling from it all these months later?

at the end of the day, i don't know what goes on in the writers room and i do think more so than other shows they're open to the idea (even though i'm very sceptical on fox giving the green light?) but like. if buddie isn't happening, i'm really gonna need some step by step explanations for the choices made here skdjaha

What confuses me is that she was responsible for BT and EA breakup, yes we endured so much more than we can take, but she made it sound like it was always in her plans to get rid of T. If she’s so insistent on platonic buddie, why not at least give one of them a permanent LI and tell us to deal with it, right? The way things turned out with L, it’s clear she actually cares about public reception. She tried 2 female LIs with Buck in S5(unsuccessfully), will she just keep bringing bland characters until one of them sticks? Or give another background LI like Ana for Eddie and never show her again, but she can say ‘oh hey but E is taken, shut up about buddie!’

The confusion you've just expressed is the main reason I still have hope for canon!Buddie going forward, tbh. If Tim isn't willing to take the risk, and deliberately promoted one staff member who he trusts to basically "undo" what went into building Buddie through three seasons (2->4)...it doesn't make much sense for Kristen to put an end to both relationships in *that* way, does it? Especially not when she was on board the BT train to begin with? (She didn't write TayKay's reappearance in 4x08, but did work on 4x11 and 4x14, for reference.) And yes, you're right about the Lucy stuff (which ties into the above). If she's in complete control, then why cut those BL scenes? Why abandon the plan to explore/tease their potential romantic connection and (hopefully) find an *acceptable* (aka safe) alternative to the ship she and her boss aren't willing to commit to? If the plan to make Buddie canon is not in place right now (not what I believe so far, but I understand the skepticism)...it's as simple as Tim & Kristen not wanting to alienate the part of the fan base that keeps them relevant in the media and on the internet. And, ftr, I won't say they're baiting us. They've both said to reporters that they see Buddie as best friends/a family; it's not their fault if our fandom takes those words and twists them to mean something different just because we want it to be true.

I know some folks blame it solely on COVID safety measures, but that never made much sense to me, not only bc a kiss so close to the lips isn’t much better than an actual one in terms of risk, but also because of that scene in 4x08 where they were practically breathing into each others mouth. Also they could have easily shown it to be a real kiss and just let the scene fade out a second before their lips meet. Or just not show them at all,because the way they did,with Eddie kissing her exactly like he kisses his grandma, seemed really weird even to the casual viewers. What do you think?

Hi there! I'm sorry to drag up old stuff but I just need someone to scream with for a minute. I watched Buck, Actually recently with the Mitchell and Thomas storyline and how we get several lovely quotes "You dont find it, you make it" "we only ever wanted to go together" etc. I feel like these quotes have shaped and shifted my Buddie lens and would be such wonderful parallels if they ever made Buddie canon. Not really an ask but just needed to put this out there because I love their little storyline and I am in my feels now that we are waiting for several months without 911 content! When you think about it, Buck's relationship with Christopher is much deeper and nothing about his relationship with him screams “uncle”. I’m not even going to touch Buck and Eddies relationship—I’m PURELY talking about Buck and Chris rn. Do you see Buck spending his time off with Jee? Taking her to the zoo on his own? Taking her to the pier? Going to Chimney and maddie's house to spend time with her on his own??

you said it anon!! on one hand i don't wanna compare buck's relationship to jee with christopher's because they are different kids (and one has just been born lol) but... you can't argue that buck fills different roles in their lives. eddie's support net was very different than madney's when he first came to LA, and he's come to rely on buck as a partner, not a brother, like maddie and chim do. i mean. takimg him to see santa, anyone?

i don't doubt that jee will spend time with buck one-on-one, he will take her to the park or whatever, i've done that with my aunts too. and he will be there for her all her life, be there if she wants to runaway or needs a safeplace, because he loves her so much. but he won't be raising jeeyun, he'll be playing the game under her parents rules and reinforce them. with chris and eddie it's different- of course he doesnt undermine eddie's authority or parenting style, but he adds to it. that time he babysat chris in 4x08? he could have perfectly said "you're going to bed now because this is what your dad says", but instead he had his 'negociation' with chris- which is a very dad thing to do btw. don't even mention the summer camp debacle of 2020 (3x18) because that SCREAMS concerned dad. buck is very protective of christopher and wants him to be happy and safe, he looks at him like a son and the will revelation can only have reinforced that for him.

let's talk about how christopher looks at buck as an equal to himself (his bff) but also to his dad! in 4x03 when eddie bans the internet at home, chris immediately goes to ask buck, but respects when he goes along with eddie. in 3x01, buck is refered as 'his buck', not 'uncle buck' (as is the case with madney even before jee was born), and when chris gets lost during the tsunami, he spends the whole day calling for buck instead of his dad, which... um, in a traumatic, stressful situation, a kid with only 1 parent would usually call for their parent, just saying.

this anon was sent ages ago so thank god eddie did realize that! ana's out of the picture and as far as we know, it hasn't affected chris that much, or at least it wasn't mentioned in 5x04. let's see what happens next.

even if buddie never go canon, you can't deny buck and christopher have a very special relationship, and they love each other like son and dad. in the end, us viewers can interpret it as whatever we like, but i personally see it as that. buck has been filling the role of eddie's partner and chris's other dad for ages, that is just FACTS.

(this is 90% shitpost. i honestly speaking think ana and eddie are quite cute as a couple, and shes a really lovely character who they better not relegate to only a love interest)

(breakdown below the cut because holy hannah this post got LONG)

okay so first lets state the obvious. We all know the juxtapositions between buck and ana in regards to chris; "he needs to know his limitations" vs *researches/helps build an adaptive skateboard for chris* being the long established of the two, while the latter is the not being ready for ana to meet chris vs whatever that whole domestic scene was when eddie came home from the date (WHAT WAS THE REASON). Ana either holds back with chris or (inadvertently) makes eddie feel insecure in his parenting (eddie feeling like he isnt being realistic with chris, or tht hes pushing too hard/hurting chris with moving on after Shannon's death). Buck however encourages eddie in his parenting, helping eddie figure out how to adapt the world for chris rather than forcing chris to adapt to the world/give up on things that he cant do like the other kids, and reassuring him that chris will come around, being there for both of them. it feels off to me that despite all of these contrasts, eddie and ana are supposed to be endgame over buck and eddie.

second point of mine is shifting over to buck. i hope that buck and taylor don't end up romantically involved, and i dont think they will. a point that was emphasized in 4x08 (our reintroduction to taylor) was not buck moving into romance. his character's focus was in his friendships; with albert, with eddie, with chris, and with taylor. its even emphasized that taylor is in need of a friend, not a partner. i dont think with how their interactions went, and with their history, that those two will end up as partners. that, and buck could really use a friend outside the 118. this has been emphasized. as much as i don't like taylor from s2, she seems to have grown a lot (not unlike buck) in the past 2 years. she and buck could make really friends, something that both they and everyone in the world could use.

my third point kinda circles back to the parallels/juxtapositions thing. the waves of buck and Eddie's friendship versus with their respective romantic interests are intriguing. buck and eddies friendship started off with tension between buck and eddie before being very positive, dipping at the lawsuit and coming back afterwards. each of their relationships romantic interests have done the opposite; initial attraction, followed by tension, followed by a more positive period. neither have gotten to another true tension point (though perhaps you could consider what happened with taylor in 4x08 such, but its much less significant that say the lawsuit or the shit that happened in dosed). this is less of a true point and more of just an Inch Resting thing to note.

my next point circles back to something i brought up in the first paragraph; buck and Eddie's very domestic scene following eddie and Ana's (frankly speaking kind of weird) date. until buck mentions the date, that scene very much reads as romantic. the way buck comes around the corner, and they way he looks softly at eddie throughout. the much more natural way eddie smiles around buck in that scene, and the gentle and fond tone he uses throughout. this scene following ana mentioning that there hasn't been anyone since shannon, and eddies reaction to her saying that, is very odd. the order that scenes fall in and the fact that buck is always there for eddie and chris seems to be no accident, and its well worth considering.

my final point centers around my literal favourite character in the whole of television; christopher diaz, who i would walk through hell for. speaking of walking through hell for chris, do you know who else would do that? eddie and buck. everyone at this point knows The Scene™️ in the searchers. eddie nearly directly saying the buck loves chris like his own kid, and heavily implies that chris and eddie both feel the same way about the matter. despite the fact that ana was already chris's teacher, the relationship between her and chris of them doesn't even come close to the beginning of his and bucks. couple that with the skateboard incident, buck watching chris during the date, and chris and bucks (heart-rending) conversation following chris running right to buck? you have a very interesting view. notable other scenes include chris at the station while they wait for pepa to get off work, and the scene where eddie unplugs the wifi following the Hildy shenanigans.

anyways, like i said at the beginning of all this, everything of what i said here was 90% shitpost. as much as my heart wants it, i dont believe that buddie with become canon ( :[ ). i do love ana, and taylor doesnt seem nearly as bad as she used to be (also they are both very hot and i am a simple woman).
