I asked for Maggie Smith’s autograph once, actually it was the first autograph I ever got. She was in a play in the West End, a two-hander with Judi Dench. I handed her the Waterman fountain pen I’d got for my 18th. She said, ‘oh what a treat to get a proper pen! Normally people shove these horrible Sharpies at you.’ I said, ‘well, I thought, it’s you, so I have to bring the best pen I’ve got!’ She said ‘well, I’ll be careful with it,’ and signed my notebook.
Anyway I remember she was very nice, and I’m glad she had a wonderful life and a peaceful ending.
