Day 2/30 of productivity

So today I've studied for a 2ish (maybe more) hours. I wanted to do more but with this heat (34°C w/ 60% humidity) it's very difficult to stay focused. Biblio was full so I couldn't go there either.

Tbh I'm a little anxious for tomorrow, it will be my first day of internship plus I'm so scared to miss the bus to go there (I've actually dreamt of this last night). Wish me luck 🍀

When Marnie Was There

This dang marsh house had me like Anna!! i was so obsessed with it!

i would love to live there

ah the marsh is chef kiss

Ghibli, like for many people, holds such a special place in my heart. if you would have asked me my favorite years ago i would have said Spirited Away, it was my go to movie. then i watched When Marnie Was There and boy did it just hit different. it mostly has to do with the location honestly. i have been in love with it since the first time i saw the movie. of course the story focuses on Anna's loneliness and not truly feeling like she belongs in her adopted family. then as fate would have it she is sent to live in the countryside with her adopted mom's sister to help with her asthma. there she meets Marnie, all of a sudden dots start connecting for Anna, giving her the closure she needed. truly lovely story.

Nausicaa of The Valley of The Wind

Nausicaa is so special. it takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, depleted of natural resoures. which of course was caused by the hands of humans. the toxic jungle is home to many mutant insects. but of course nausicaa hopes to one day understand the forest, so that in the future humans can learn to coexist with it.

with climate change one of the biggest global issues our world faces, this anime shows a world that could be in the future for our planet. hopefully we learn more and change things to live for a better tomorrow, rather than making our future generations live how to adapt to harsher and harsher environments.

unlike when marnie was there, i can't say i'd love to live in this world, but the valley of the wind is beautiful.

Day 18: Favorite anime art?

I'm gonna assume it counts by technicality, so I'll go with this poster for Spy X Family CODE: White.

I have to wonder if this is cheating? Eh, this challenge is meant to be fun so I hope nobody nitpicks

Anyway, compared to the manga, the anime art direction is a whole different beast. While trying to be respectful to the color palette of the source material, a lot of it kind of botches the color design just a little. Due to the anime adaptation's emphasis on the cozy family aspect of the story, it's certainly more prone to get a little more intense on the saturation I talked about yesterday, and since the color is more naturalistic the palette is constrained by trying to look accurate to the lighting conditions it's trying to mimic over the more expressionistic choices of the manga art (like using moderately vivid blues for the shadows just to balance out the color palette). As a side note, I think we can agree the fashion choices for the Forgers by the anime staff and marketing team are... not always on point. So there's that too. But when it comes to this poster, in many ways I find it to be one of the closest to the manga's color illustrations. Not quite in that the art-style is a dead ringer for Endo's artwork but in that the color philosophy resembles the more pragmatic choices you see in those color spreads. The general composition and use of a more painterly design to the background also are a welcome change of pace, and while it's not a direct reference, the design of the whole thing certainly borrows from classic espionage films like the James Bond series.

Just, you know, without the horniness. Though on that front I REALLY wish there was a clean version online of the bonus poster that came with the first Blu Ray. I'm a sucker for a good homage to film and this was very clearly inspired by the posters of movies like From Russia with Love. The Connery era of James Bond may be particularly cringeworthy with the machismo, but the posters were fire.

That said, If I have to pick promotional art tied to the actual anime seasons, the season 2 promo is where it's at.

In spite of not being the biggest fan of those overly bombastic yellows on the top half(or those pseudo chromatic aberration blues in the bottom half), I like how this image does a great job in reflecting the dichotomy the series tends to opperate on. On one hand you get a silly slice of life that is directly contingent on the success of an elementary schooler befriending her peers at a prestigious school... while on the other you have a (fictional world) cold war action-drama where all the involved parties know each others and coexist as peers despite being secretly on opposite sides.

There's not such a thing as a perfect adaptation, but I think it's safe to say we've got so far a damn good one.
