My cross-stitch nemesis (in a very Kate Beaton sense of nemesis)

Scarlet Quince's rendition of the horse painting from Lascaux, which is fully stitched 208 by 142 stitches (a bit over 29,000 stitches total) on 18-count aida.

The beginning: March 6, 2021

June 23, 2021, approximately 11% complete by total stitch count.

One year on, March 2, 2022, approximately 18% complete.

March 28, 2022, the top twenty rows are complete all the way across and it's 22.5% complete by stitch count.

July 13, 2022, the top thirty rows are complete and it's 27.7% complete.

October 8, 2022, 40 rows complete and 35.6% complete by stitch count.

50 rows complete as of today, July 16, 2023! Very crumpled and no stitch count percentage because I last worked on it while I was on vacation and it was long enough ago that my phone browser lost all my pattern data and I have to rebuild it from the last backup, which I cannot face right now because UGH, NEMESIS.

(The lighting mostly does not represent how absolutely impossible it is to distinguish all those gray/beige/blue colors that are forming the background, and I was Very Clever and did this project on cream-colored fabric that doesn't show through gaps so obviously, which means it... blends together and is Worse, Actually.)

The parallels between Hector and Patroclus, and between Achilles and Andromache, in the last books of the Iliad:

As I was reading through the Iliad, I was struck by how strongly Hector and Patroclus parallel each other in their last moments.

I'm not exactly making an argument that they parallel each other throughout the Iliad, or saying that Hector does not act like a foil for Achilles throughout the narrative too, but I did find it extremely interesting, especially in association with the parallels between Achilles and Andromache.

They are both first given a grave disadvantage by a god, Athena in Hector's case and Apollo in Patroclus'. Athena interferes with Hector by appearing as Deiphobus and then disappearing when he is in need of assistance. Apollo interferes with Patroclus by striking the breath out of him and knocking off all of his armor, so he stands on the battlefield defenseless.

They bear a similar reaction to the loss of their weapons. Both stand still in shock for a moment, and both of these phrases are at the beginning of a line and are immediately followed by a caesura: 16. 806- στῆ δὲ ταφών: ὄπιθεν δὲ μετάφρενον ὀξέϊ δουρὶ 'he stood dazed. But from behind on his back with a sharp spear...' and 22. 293- στῆ δὲ κατηφήσας, οὐδ᾽ ἄλλ᾽ ἔχε μείλινον ἔγχος. 'he stood mute in horror, as he did not have his ashen spear.'

There is a repeated structure of 'three times and on the fourth,' something changes.

16. 784-789: τρὶς μὲν ἔπειτ᾽ ἐπόρουσε θοῷ ἀτάλαντος Ἄρηϊ σμερδαλέα ἰάχων, τρὶς δ᾽ ἐννέα φῶτας ἔπεφνεν. ἀλλ᾽ ὅτε δὴ τὸ τέταρτον ἐπέσσυτο δαίμονι ἶσος, ἔνθ᾽ ἄρα τοι Πάτροκλε φάνη βιότοιο τελευτή: ἤντετο γάρ τοι Φοῖβος ἐνὶ κρατερῇ ὑσμίνῃ δεινός: Three times did he spring at them, equal to swift Ares, shouting terribly, and three times did he slay nine men. But when he charged the fourth time, like to a god, then, Patroclus, did the end of your life appear. For Phoebus, terrifying, met you in that fierce combat.   22. 165-6, 208-13: ὣς τὼ τρὶς Πριάμοιο πόλιν πέρι δινηθήτην καρπαλίμοισι πόδεσσι: θεοὶ δ᾽ ἐς πάντες ὁρῶντο: Thus three times did they circle around the city of Priam, with their swift feet, and all the gods were watching them. ἀλλ᾽ ὅτε δὴ τὸ τέταρτον ἐπὶ κρουνοὺς ἀφίκοντο, καὶ τότε δὴ χρύσεια πατὴρ ἐτίταινε τάλαντα, ἐν δ᾽ ἐτίθει δύο κῆρε τανηλεγέος θανάτοιο, τὴν μὲν Ἀχιλλῆος, τὴν δ᾽ Ἕκτορος ἱπποδάμοιο, ἕλκε δὲ μέσσα λαβών: ῥέπε δ᾽ Ἕκτορος αἴσιμον ἦμαρ, ᾤχετο δ᾽ εἰς Ἀΐδαο, λίπεν δέ ἑ Φοῖβος Ἀπόλλων. But when they arrived at the springs for the fourth time, then the father held out his golden scales, and placed on them two fates of woeful death, one for Achilles, the other for horse-taming Hector, and having seized the middle of these, he lifted them, and the destined day of Hector sank, and went to Hades, and Phoebus Apollo left him.  

4. The final pieces of dialogue between Patroclus and Hector and then Hector and Achilles follow a very similar formula: the winner lords over the loser, calling him νήπιε (16. 833 & 22. 333), and then the loser as they die, gives a prophecy concerning the winner’s death (16. 851-854 & 22. 359-360) which the winner doesn’t take well. This parallel also clearly functions as one between Hector and Achilles.

5. And what is perhaps the strangest parallel- their final death descriptions are exactly the same.

ὣς ἄρα μιν εἰπόντα τέλος θανάτοιο κάλυψε: ψυχὴ δ᾽ ἐκ ῥεθέων πταμένη Ἄϊδος δὲ βεβήκει ὃν πότμον γοόωσα λιποῦσ᾽ ἀνδροτῆτα καὶ ἥβην. 16. 855-7 & 22. 361-3

Achilles and Andromache have decidedly less parallels that can be clearly seen, but I think the fact they play the same role of 'the one left behind' is still deeply interesting.

They are both completely ignorant of the fate of their loved one, and did not even expect it to occur.

17.401- 407: οὐδ᾽ ἄρα πώ τι ᾔδεε Πάτροκλον τεθνηότα δῖος Ἀχιλλεύς: πολλὸν γὰρ ῥ᾽ ἀπάνευθε νεῶν μάρναντο θοάων τείχει ὕπο Τρώων: τό μιν οὔ ποτε ἔλπετο θυμῷ τεθνάμεν, ἀλλὰ ζωὸν ἐνιχριμφθέντα πύλῃσιν ἂψ ἀπονοστήσειν, ἐπεὶ οὐδὲ τὸ ἔλπετο πάμπαν ἐκπέρσειν πτολίεθρον ἄνευ ἕθεν, οὐδὲ σὺν αὐτῷ: πολλάκι γὰρ τό γε μητρὸς ἐπεύθετο νόσφιν ἀκούων, ἥ οἱ ἀπαγγέλλεσκε Διὸς μεγάλοιο νόημα. Not yet did noble Achilles know that Patroclus was dead, for they were battling very far from the swift ships under the wall of the Trojans: he never expected in his heart  that he was dead, but that he would return back again alive having reached the gates, since he did not at all expect him to sack the citadel without him, nor even with him, for often did he hear things from his mother, who secretly reported the intentions of great Zeus to him.  22. 437-446: ἄλοχος δ�� οὔ πώ τι πέπυστο Ἕκτορος: οὐ γάρ οἵ τις ἐτήτυμος ἄγγελος ἐλθὼν ἤγγειλ᾽ ὅττί ῥά οἱ πόσις ἔκτοθι μίμνε πυλάων, ἀλλ᾽ ἥ γ᾽ ἱστὸν ὕφαινε μυχῷ δόμου ὑψηλοῖο δίπλακα πορφυρέην, ἐν δὲ θρόνα ποικίλ᾽ ἔπασσε. κέκλετο δ᾽ ἀμφιπόλοισιν ἐϋπλοκάμοις κατὰ δῶμα ἀμφὶ πυρὶ στῆσαι τρίποδα μέγαν, ὄφρα πέλοιτο Ἕκτορι θερμὰ λοετρὰ μάχης ἐκ νοστήσαντι νηπίη, οὐδ᾽ ἐνόησεν ὅ μιν μάλα τῆλε λοετρῶν χερσὶν Ἀχιλλῆος δάμασε γλαυκῶπις Ἀθήνη. But Hector’s wife had not heard about him yet, for no messenger, a true friend, had come  to report to her that her husband remained outside the gates, but she was weaving in a corner of the tall home, a double-folded, purple web, upon which she had added many-colored flowers, and had called to her fair haired attendants in the house to set a great tripod over the fire, so that there would be a hot bath ready for Hector when he returned from battle. Blind to everything, she did not know that far from any bath  grey eyed Athena by the hand of Achilles had killed him.    

2. Upon hearing that their loved one has perished, they mourn bitterly and both express a desire to never have been born.

18. 86-7: αἴθ᾽ ὄφελες σὺ μὲν αὖθι μετ᾽ ἀθανάτῃς ἁλίῃσι ναίειν, Πηλεὺς δὲ θνητὴν ἀγαγέσθαι ἄκοιτιν. If only you had stayed there among the immortal sea nymphs, and Peleus had married a mortal.  22. 479-81: αὐτὰρ ἐγὼ Θήβῃσιν ὑπὸ Πλάκῳ ὑληέσσῃ ἐν δόμῳ Ἠετίωνος, ὅ μ᾽ ἔτρεφε τυτθὸν ἐοῦσαν δύσμορος αἰνόμορον: ὡς μὴ ὤφελλε τεκέσθαι. But I was in Thebes below wooded Placus in the home of Eetion, who brought me up when I was young, an ill fated father to a doomed child; I wish he had not begotten me.

Battle of the River Raisin

The Battle of the River Raisin (18-23 January 1813), also known as the Battle of Frenchtown or the River Raisin Massacre, was a significant engagement in the War of 1812. It saw the defeat of a US army at Frenchtown (modern-day Monroe, Michigan) along the River Raisin, and the subsequent massacre of some of the surrendered US soldiers.

Background

On 16 August 1812, less than two months after the initial declaration of war, the United States suffered a humiliating defeat when the strategic outpost of Fort Detroit fell. Brigadier General William Hull, in command of the fort and its 2,500 defenders, had been terrified by the Native American warriors marching alongside the British troops; convinced that the Native warriors would massacre his men if the fort fell to an assault, Hull decided to surrender without a fight. While this may have saved the lives of his men, Hull's surrender cost the US control of the Michigan Territory, as British Lt. Colonel Henry Procter could now use Detroit as a base from which to expand his influence in the region. Even worse from a US perspective, the Siege of Detroit had encouraged more Native American nations to side with the British, hoping to recover the lands they had lost to the US in the Treaty of Greenville (1795). The recapture of Detroit was therefore a high priority for President James Madison and his administration, who entrusted the task to Major General William Henry Harrison, the popular hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe.

Harrison was placed in command of the reconstituted Army of the Northwest, which was largely made up of volunteers from the frontier state of Kentucky. These frontiersmen were despised by the British, who regarded them as half-wild 'savages' who lived on the fringes of civilization. "The Kentucky men are wretches," wrote one British officer, "suborned by the Government and capable of the greatest villainies… the most barbarous, illiterate beings in America" (Taylor, 208). Rowdy, resourceful, and quarrelsome, the Kentuckians were known to be clean shots and dirty fighters – in a Kentucky scrap, biting, scratching, and gouging were all considered fair play. They were hated and feared by the local Native Americans, who called them 'Big Knives' in reference to the long scalping knives the Kentuckians often wore on their belts. Decades of bad blood existed between the northwestern Native Americans and the Kentucky frontiersmen, with each group harboring painful memories of raids, killings, and mutilations committed by the other.

After taking command on 2 October 1812, Harrison decided to split his army into two columns. The leftmost column, under his second-in-command Brigadier General James Winchester, would push north along the Maumee River, while Harrison led the righthand column himself, advancing along the Upper Sandusky. The plan was for each column to reconvene at the Maumee Rapids near Lake Erie, to prepare for the final push to Fort Detroit. The going, however, was rough. Hindered by bad weather, low on supplies, and faced with the ever-present threat of a Native American ambush, each column made painfully slow progress. The situation worsened in late November when winter rapidly set in; one soldier, Kentucky rifleman William Atherton, would bleakly write that there was nothing "but hunger and cold and nakedness staring us in the face" (quoted in Berton, 291).

Harrison's column lost many horses to exhaustion in the effort to pull their cannons to the Upper Sandusky, forcing him to abandon several wagons loaded with previous supplies. At the same time, Winchester's column, which had barely begun its crawl up the Maumee, was forced to wait near Fort Defiance for fresh supplies. Poor sanitation and drainage in Winchester's camp soon led the men to be ravaged by disease; hundreds fell sick, with several men dying each day. "Our sufferings at this place have been greater than if we had been in a severe battle," wrote one soldier, "more than one hundred lives…lost owing to our bad accommodations! The sufferings of about three hundred sick at a time, who are exposed to the cold ground and deprived of every nourishment are sufficient proofs of our wretched condition!" (quoted in Berton, 292).

By late-December, it had become frustratingly clear that no attempt to retake Detroit could take place before spring. Still, Harrison ordered Winchester to complete his march to the Maumee Rapids so that the army would be in position to strike when the time was right; Harrison, a few days behind, promised he would meet him there. On 30 December, Winchester's column set out on the final leg of its dismal march – most of his men lacked coats or adequate shoes and were forced to suffer through the winter elements in the tattered cotton shirts and pants they had been wearing since August. When Winchester reached the Maumee Rapids on 11 January 1813, his men were exhausted but not demoralized. Most of them were Kentucky volunteers, whose six-month enlistments were about to expire but who wanted a taste of combat before going home, to make the previous weeks of suffering worth it.

Francis “Bully” Mission Sr., president and founder of Mission Animal Control, is in a good mood when I meet him at a strip mall parking lot on the south side of the Hawaiian island of Kaua‘i. He and his son Levi have just found two “squeakers”—pigs no more than a few months old—in one of their traps, which means US $100 in their pockets and another satisfied customer. Property owners all over the island hire the duo to remove problem animals, and Bully has invited me to join him as he collects the new captives.

“We had a big mama yesterday and three juveniles,” he tells me as I climb into his pickup truck. “The population is unbelievable.”

Inside the cab, I notice what appears to be Old MacDonald’s entire farm glued to the dashboard: a plastic cat, a couple of horses, a cow, and three pigs. These are all species that humans have brought to the Hawaiian islands and that the Mission family is often hired to eliminate. Feral pigs, once denizens of the mountains with intermittent forays to lower elevations, have become regular raiders of lowland farms, upscale neighborhoods, and members-only golf courses. “Some of them look like you could put a saddle on them and ride them,” Bully says of the pigs he’s seen.

Pigs can now be found on six of Hawai‘i’s seven inhabited islands, and their impacts are especially profound on Kaua‘i, the lush “Garden Island,” which has so far retained much of its native character. Its mountains are home to 255 unique native plant species and 208 native birds, including 11 found nowhere else on Earth. As the pigs tear up vegetation, they encourage erosion and muddy the island’s drinking water supplies. Their wallows breed mosquitoes that spread avian malaria, contributing to 10 of Kaua‘i’s 16 native honeycreepers going extinct. They also spread the seeds of the strawberry guava tree in their dung, contributing to what one group of researchers has referred to as an “invasional meltdown.” The guava shades out native plants and smothers them in its leaves.

The pigs’ presence in the populated lowlands has grown over the last couple of decades. Sally Rizzo, who was running an organic farm during my visit, told me that the pigs broke through her fence this year and “shit all over our baby greens.” On the roads, drivers frequently have to swerve to avoid pigs, leading to several hundred accidents every year. Beaches aren’t safe either. Three years ago, a tusked boar made headlines when it went for a swim and thrashed a surfer in the lineup off Oahu, another island. On oceanside bluffs, meanwhile, the pigs are preying on the chicks of migratory seabirds, so completely trashing their burrow nests that the birds never return to them again.

Despite the damage that feral pigs are causing, you can’t just shoot them on sight as you can in many other US states. In Texas, home to more than one-third of the seven million feral pigs in the United States, hunters and landowners target them from helicopters or with poison baits. On Hawai‘i, however, pigs occupy a more complicated position, as their populations are managed for both recreation and subsistence. Along with West Virginia, Hawai‘i is one of two states with bag limits on public land. This means that while conservationists are trying to reduce or eliminate pig populations inside protected areas, the Hawai‘i Division of Forestry and Wildlife manages the animal as a limited resource just about everywhere else.

Ghost usually chills around, but when riding in formation, he'll be in the front. Ghost is actually the one with most experience - Gaz is the newer member in the bike gang. Gaz learned first how to do the kickstand turn and taught the others.

Horangi knows how to both wheelie and breakie, Soap is an expert wheelier, Gaz has never attempted a wheelie, and König just cruises along on the rides.

Pressure Original Character - The Dracea (folklore-inspired)

Looks like a smiling face with some long lashes and has a dark purple hair-like trail around itself. Appears throughout the run in areas with water spouting from damaged pipes. This is in order to make it somewhat easier to sea that there is something off. Only visible in runs with at least two players. She disguises as items in drawers and when an user takes it, she takes the user as a host to appear like the user, yet the user is gone. Unless the user is revived, dracea roams around behind the other team mate(s) disguised as the initial user only moving a bit slower and tries to take the other user(s) alongside.

Sebastian would sell an eel ointment or eel fat that one could use in order to see dracea disguised as an item, appearing in the form of a golden ring, jewelry, or something like that.

A not-so-good thing would be when dracea would disguise as an item in a shop, for example upon arriving at Sebastian when one would try to buy something. Shell no!

Thought about this when re-reading the folktales about the dracæ. Loosely retold, they are an Scottish freshwater-person who can transform into desired objects like jewelry, golden rings or cups, yet also wooden dishware. Usually, the dracæ would float above the water surface as an object. When a mortal would get hold of a dracæ-turned item, one would be taken underwater to serve them in their abodes either in a lake or river. Upon touching one's eye with the ointment made of a serpent's grease, one would be able to see how the dracæ seemingly exist among society in the forms of mortal human beings.

Initially in France, the drac is quite the same freshwater-person, capable of shapeshifting into objects like wooden dishware and golden cups or rings to lure victims. It is capable of assuming a mortal human form, lurking and shopping in markets ashore. One of drac's true forms supposedly looked like large purple blobs floating above a water surface. Other versions tell of the drac's forms comprising of animals like a horse or dragon. One was able to see the dracs by touching one's eye with eel pasty aka. eel fat.

Star Wars Prequel Trilogy gets Graphic Novel Adaptation at Dark Horse

Dark Horse is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace with a graphic novel reimagining of the prequel trilogy. Star Wars: The Prequel Trilogy Graphic Novel is written by Alessandro Ferrari and illustrated by Ingo Römling, Matteo Piana, Andrea Parisi, Andrea Greppi, Igor Chimisso, Marco Dominici, Monica Catalano, Davide Turotti, Massimo Rocca, Pierluigi Casolino, Ekaterina Maximenko, and Kawaii Creative Studio.

Star Wars: The Prequel Trilogy Graphic Novel tells the stories of The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith in a 208-page graphic novel, available on November 12, 2024.

So I did a tier rank list for Leverage before I do my full rewatch, with episodes based off of memory (some I even had to look up what they were!). I wonder how controversial these opinions are, if at all.

S = Absolute Favorite

A = Love them!

B = Enjoy Them!

C = Average episode but still like them

D = Meh/Boring/Dislike

....I also wonder if that's even legible! Just in case, I'll do a read more with the breakdown typed out. (and FYI, in C tier, they're all fairly interchangeable. Other tiers feel about right. Also two part finale episodes are always combined together as one.) (and yes, I'm aware that I have a bias for earlier seasons, partially because I have rewatched them more frequently just from starting from E1 then going on, and partially because I genuinely think that they are better.)
