To the people who are so sad the Olympics are over because they no longer get to watch incredible athletes do incredible things everyday:
Fear not!
The Paralympics are starting on the 28th of August which are the exact same thing but (in my biased opinion) better!
You want to cheer on your country? Well don’t stop at just the Olympics! Maybe your country didn’t get as many medals as expected, but in the Paralympics they might destroy!
Please don’t drop your support for half of your country’s athletes!

Do you know about the Gaza Sunbirds?
They are a paracycling team from Gaza. During the manifestations held between 2018 and 2019 at the border between Israel and Palestine, Alaa al-Dali, a professional cyclist, was shot by israeli snipers and lost a leg. 214 other palestinians were killed and more than 36 thousands were wounded. Many of them ended up losing limbs.
Alaa al-Dali knew these people were at risk of becoming outcasts, so he decided to found a paracycling team with them. The team was getting ready for the 2024 Paralympics, but because of the genocide they won't be able to take part in the games. The Gaza Sunbirds have now decided to put their skill at the service of the palestinian people, and bring humanitarian aid even to the most remote places of Palestine.
There are cities which are organizing rides to raise funds for the Gaza Sunbirds (you could ask to organize one in your city!), but you could also simply donate through their website:

Speaking about his personal history with the BBC in June 2021, Petrillo said: “Until four years ago, if you’d talked to Fabrizio (the name Petrillo was given at birth), Fabrizio would have given you the idea he was sexist. He was a tough guy who’d speak dismissively of women and then be a woman in his private space.”
Another misogynist who couldn't succeed against other men.
By Genevieve Gluck August 13, 2024
A 50 year-old trans-identified male from Italy is set to become the first man to compete in a women’s category at the Paris Paralympics. Valentina Petrillo, whose birth name is Fabrizio, who competes in the women’s T12 classification, for athletes with visual impairments, and currently holds 8 women’s running championship titles, despite failing to earn even one while competing as a male.
Petrillo has been diagnosed with Stargardt disease, a disorder of the eye that causes retinal degeneration over time. Due to this visual impairment, he has been permitted to compete in both matches designated for women with disabilities, as well as those which are not.
At the Paralympic Games, which are scheduled to run from August 28 to September 8, Petrillo will run in the women’s T12 200m and 400m. He was cleared to compete against female athletes, despite being a man, by International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Andrew Parsons. The IPC works closely with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the two have self-described as “strategic partners.”
Speaking to BBC Sport, Parsons revealed that the IPC does not enforce an official position for or against allowing men to self-identify into women’s sport, but rather “[allow] individual sports to make their rules in terms of transgender,” which results in rules that are “different from sport to sport.”
“Some are coming with different positions on transgender, or with the criteria to allow them or not to allow them, so I’m not surprised by the repercussions of it,” Parsons said. He added that he hoped the sporting community would “unite” on policies dealing with gender identity.
According to the World Para Athletics Championships guidance on participation, “an athlete shall be eligible to compete in women’s competition if she is recognized as female by law.” But their policy book goes on to note that it will “deal with any cases involving transgender athletes in accordance with the IOC’s transgender guidelines.”
Petrillo first changed his name to Valentina and began taking estrogen in 2019. The following year, he began competing against female athletes and has since broken multiple Italian women’s running records.
Mariuccia Quilleri, an athlete and lawyer who has represented several female athletes who oppose Petrillo’s participation in women’s races, told the BBC that inclusion had been chosen over fairness and “there is not much more we can do.”

Last few Days of Paralympics Recap
I got behind on my recaps, but I've been watching plenty! And watching so much, I've forgotten most of it. Oops!
But today at least I still remember what I've watched.
A wonderful gold medal match in Wheelchair Tennis (men's) Oda from Japan took down GB's Hewitt in a thrilling 3 set match. That went 5-7 in the third. The third also same 3 games go break point back to back to back which was awesome to watch.
Women's Sitting Volleyball, I actually score watched this one, but the US came out ahead 3-1 continuing their gold medal reign and weird tradition of losing to China in pool play to turn around and beat them in the medal round.
Men's wheelchair basketball also ended with the US winning against GB in a very close game as well.
And France winning gold in Blind Soccer in a shootout against Argentina.
There has been so much good stuff that I'll definitely be going back to watch when I have free time again!
Tomorrow is the last day! We have the marathon in two classes, para powerlifting, Para Canoe and Wheelchair basketball (women's). Plus the closing ceremony.
The last few days did add a few more countries bringing us to a total of 85 countries so far. Tokyo saw 86 countries, will Paris be able to tie or surpass Tokyo? We will see tomorrow!
China, GB and the US sit 1-2-3 having all broken 100 total medals (and China breaking 200!!) Host France is siting in 8th with 19 Golds.
Looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings!!

So - now that Imane Khelif is getting her vengeance - time to turn your heads back to the Paralympics. Time for allies to put their money where their mouths are and back a trans woman that will be competing.
[Attached are two photos of Valentina Petrillo, one a bust, and one waist-up in full sprint.]

Her name is Valentina Petrillo and she is a visually-impaired sprinter.
Time to support her, because even without the racism element I expect she will be getting some flak from Awful, Awful People.

Call for the honor to Susanne Pollatschek, voice of Olivia Flaversham in The Great Mouse Detective and Head of Partnership of the International Olympic Committee.
From August 13 until today, the date of the ceremony, I had the pride of creating and sharing on X the drawings of Olivia Flaversham from The Great Mouse Detective to honor Susanne Pollatschek, the voice of the character and the director sponsorship of the International Olympic Committee.
On June 25, Pollatschek briefly emerged from the shadows by carrying the Olympic flame alongside Sébastien Coeb for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Actress in a film with no future and a very discreet sportswoman to the general public but with an admirable voice, she was the first actress directed by John Musker and Ron Clements well before Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid (1989).
I ask you all to share your drawings of Olivia Flaversham on Facebook, Instagram and X with the hashtag #SusannePollatschek to honor her in the wake of the Paralympic Games which take place until September 8.

Headline Horizon: Russian Athletes Barred from Using Flag at 2024 Paralympics in Paris
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has decided to disallow Russian athletes from using their nation's flag at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris. This decision comes after Russia's ban from the Olympic and Paralympic communities due to the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Find out more in the latest news.
