2022 Creator’s Self-Love Extravaganza

Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! If you don’t have five published works, that’s fine! Include ideas/drafts/whatever you like that you’ve worked on/thought about, and talk a little about them instead! Remember, this is all about self-love and positive enthusiasm, so fuck the rules if you need to. Have fun, and tag as many fellow creators as you like so they can share the love!

@thelionshymnal dug this one up and while they didn't tag me, I felt the tag in my heart. Therefore, I pulled out the original rules with a little under 24 hours before the calendar flips over to a new year, I think I am safe in saying that my word count for the year is complete.

I did not write a lot this year! Comparatively, at least.* A mere 25,682 words have gone to publish. But it's also been a very disruptive year in that I quit my job of 5+ years, got rid of ALL of my stuff that couldn't fit into a tiny car, drove seven days cross country to a New Better Shinier Job (while writing a final paper), rented a 10 x 10 room above a garage for several months where my cat was very kind by not murdering me, dropped everything to sit at my dad's deathbed, went right back to work the following Monday, finished yet another graduate degree, went on a trip to Maine with friends, moved AGAIN to a much larger much more private space, and uhhh... signed up for yet another degree program. Because I have a problem. Clearly. Oh and I also broke a bone for the first time in my life! It's in my foot! I haven't gone out to do ANYTHING other than get groceries for the last two weeks and it sucks!

2022 has been a lot! More good than bad and overall improvement of everything, but a lot! And I've wanted to write. I've thought a lot about it in the moments before falling asleep! But any progress is still progress and my body comes first these days because in this house we practice self-care.

That being said, what I have put out, I've been immensely proud of. So, in no particular order and without further ado...

On the Event of the Annual Lilias Recruit Hazing Final Exam (ans, gen)

I wrote third person limited! For the first time! It was weird but also a fun to write something where the audience only has the interactions and body language to read.

2. where mended hearts meet (obiyuki, 🍋)

While I haven't been writing proper most of the year, I have been obsessing over @onedivinemisfit's camboy!obi au. It's been my personal problem, like, ever since she first introduced the concept for it and I've been screaming about it every chance that I get. Part of me much much wants to write the whole thing, but also acknowledged that I did not have the time. But also also I knew I was not going to be productive about anything at ALL until I wrote at least a little smutty smut for it. I mean, two consenting adults who are very accommodating of one anothers kinks and traumas? Sign me the fuck up, let's do this.

3. Drabble-Drabble 2022 Challenge (multiple fandoms, multiple pairings, all ratings)

Perhaps because I haven't had a chance to really focus on my writing this year, I wanted to do something uncomplicated. I remember loving drabbles back in my livejournal days. Just being absolutely laid out by 100 words precisely. But I'd never tried it myself so I wanted to give it a shot! I asked and y'all sent in around 30 prompts and I answered 26! It was a blast, highly recommend to anyone out there that wants to try their hand at it.

4. Seven Nights, Night 7 (Hakuouki, Yamachi, 🍋)

I had a moment when I went to see the timestamps of the chapters I worked on this year and it was literally just Night 7 of Seven Nights. It's split into three chapters, but it's 14k words just leading up to the final night, I don't even know what to say, y'all. Yamazaki is just real shy and writing two virgins was a lot harder than I thought (and I already thought it was going to be difficult!). I do really love it, though, they're adorable.

5. Stone Soup (Spy x Family, Yor & Yuri)

I would be remiss if I didn't include the final posted fic of the year (and my first foray into the sxf fandom!). Not only did I write a child's pov, I got to incorporate some real mean food feels into it. All together a real good time! XD

Smut scenes: nothing explicit...yet. <3

New things I tried: I’ve tried a few new things with writing prompts for DADWC, like modern AUs, new POVs, and my first foray into writing Aeducans, for an exchange. Writing about Orzammar and dwarven customs has been very interesting! 

Fic I spent the most time on: Oh my... I would say a tie between Songstress and my novel, Passaggio. The sheer amount of research that goes into both of those projects is pretty substantial and varied. Technically, both are set during the Renaissance (I use 16th century as my research timeframe for Songstress), but Passaggio is set specifically in 1590s Venice, so learning about the intricacies of the time, setting, politics, etc. has been very interesting...albeit time-consuming! There’s so many rabbit holes one can fall down <3 

Fic I spent the least time on: mmm.... Probably Of Cocoa and Cooking Lessons and Gray Magic; I wrote both of them over the span of one evening, when the Muses were cooperating 

Favorite thing I wrote: I think it's still Songstress; I enjoy the journey of self-discovery and growth Fenris undertakes as he helps Sebastian retake Starkhaven. 

Favorite thing I read: AH! I can’t choose, it’s too hard! Most recently, I’ve read/reread these:  Anything for You by JenniferHawke, Two Songs and Three Serpents by @inquisitoracorn , From Ashes by @rakshadow, and Justitia by @tkwritesdumbassassins (TK’s Federico is my favorite Federico Auditore, hands down).    

Writing goals for next year: Finish Songstress! I also have writing prompts I’d like to finish and post, so I can focus more on Passaggio and my other projects.

5 works I’m proudest of:

Rose Tattoo (series) - I went from saying I’d never write a tattoo AU to having written one in like, three weeks. It’s now one of my all-time faves.

Gamechanger (series) - Also never thought I’d attempt a sports AU, but I am so very proud of hockey!Patrick.

Until I set him free - I always wanted to write artist!David and I was never quite sure how until this happened. And I love it.

Some kind of alchemy - I’d never tried writing Rachel before and I’m still really happy with the way this one turned out - telling Rachel, Patrick, and David’s stories together.

Gathered here today - I was so excited to write with @dinnfameron, and tell this story that was literally everything my little fangirl heart could ever want. Swoony David & Patrick moments, wisdom and love from Marcy & Clint, with a little fandom crossover action.

3 improvements in my writing: * I’ve just about broken my ellipsis addiction (unless I want to show a legit pause in conversation, but even then I’m trying to be conservative).

* I have been managing to keep the tense consistent all the way through my drafts, which is awesome.

* I feel like I do something a little bit better each time I write. Whether it’s word choice or imagery or whatever, I think the more words we write, the better we will be. Also, taking notes from betas = improvements.

2 writing resolutions:

* Engagement is what it is. I’ve been better about staying zen when I could get disappointed, but it’s an ongoing struggle.

* Write when I want to, not because I feel like I have to.

Number 1 favorite line:

“How dare Patrick tell him differently.” (one hundred words) In context, I think this might be one of the most devastating lines I’ve ever written.

End of Year Fic Writer Round-up

Words posted: 50,362 words!

Additional Words Written: tbh, I did not keep track of that last year except for NaNo! I just wrote. Keeping track of overall word count isn't a huge priority for me these days. I really just use word count to drive me forward on individual projects. That said, I have 71K (give or take) of Briala/F!Tabris fic I wrote in 2022, as well as some 5K of unposted Lavellan fic, and there's probably something else I've forgotten about, but let's call it 76K.

Grand total of words: If I total the two, it comes to 126K, but I'm not actually sure if that's accurate since I'm pretty sure some of A Pot to Piss In was written in 2021 and at this point I've forgotten how much, though it probably wasn't more than a few thousand. Let's call it 120k. Give or take.

Fandoms: Dragon Age primarily, with a side of Mass Effect and Person of Interest for exchanges!

Highest Kudos: Between Us, the Tali/F!Shep fic I wrote for the Rare Femslash Exchange, with 99!

New things I tried: Completing NaNoWriMo in November. (Successful, and never again.)

Fic I spent the most time on: Definitely A Pot to Piss In, my Sera backstory fic.

Fic I spent the least time on: Probably Sencha Green, just because it's the shortest.

Favourite thing I wrote: At this point it's a toss-up between A Pot to Piss In and the Briala/F!Tabris fic that's still in progress. Working on those two stories has absolutely been the highlight of my writing year. So much fun.

Favourite thing I read: In published works, Nona the Ninth without a doubt! In fanfic, there's been so much good stuff it's tough to narrow down (Dragon Age fandom is BOUNTEOUS), but (Tell Me) The Colour of the Rain by commoncomitatus really stands out as a Sera fic that has stuck with me. I've also been loving a lot of fics by @darethshirl, @rosella-writes, and @fireferns.

Writing goals for next year: Finishing A Hero Sleeps In Gwaren, my Briala/F!Tabris longfic, is about as far ahead as I've thought. When that's done, I'm sure something else will seize my attention!

Too many of my tickletober fics tbh but that’s what I get for writing for microscopic fandoms like new girl, tuck everlasting & wolf 359 which all clock in around 10 notes each. You’d think with only 4 notes my Night Film fic What A Prize would win this category. But my Imposters fic Junk in the Trunk & Workaholic fic Pizza Payback tie with a whopping 1 note!!!

The Games We Play update

The fanfic has officially surpassed 150k words!!! Whoop whoop! 🥳🥳🥳

This makes it the longest of all of my writing projects - all of the others being original works. I don't know how I should feel about that lol.

There's still a lot of editing to be done and some scenes are missing, so the word count will probably only increase. I even have a feeling it could reach 200k before the end, but that is not a promise, only a possibility! 😅

Either way, I'm on my way to becoming one of the longest Haladriel fanfic on Ao3! And definitely the longest Haladriel fanfic that's not rated explicit!!! <3

Again, don't know how to feel about that haha. Either way, it's an honor to be of service.

You know what, I assume that people always read my pinned, or notice the pointer "new reader? start here" in every new Fragments' episode. I might be deluding myself. So hi hello lemme TALK ABOUT MY COMIC.

Before I get too rambly (and I mean RAMBLY), here's a quick intro. Fragments is a comic focused on feels and slice of life, made by a queer guy, aiming to ~character study~ the main cast (Vivi, Raha, Alisaie, Feo Ul) and fill in the gaps in canon (or linger in canon moments that needed more air imo), the tone ranging from angst to fluff to meme. Good punches require a good windup, so please don't expect angst anytime soon :3c

The story's segmented (fragmented, heh) into episodes. Episodes 1-11 take place in ARR, you can enjoy them with no worry about spoilers. Episode 12 onward is ShB, with all the spoilers and lorebending.

My storytelling style assumes you haven't only played through ShB, but know it like the back of your hand, i.e. it's for nerds and thinkers. Of course there's plenty of silly moments that don't require any deep knowledge, but the overarching story does. Often I skip canon events, only hinting that they took place, simply because I don't wanna retell the msq 1:1, I've got plenty of original scenes waiting to be drawn. You're in for a treat if you like obsessing over emotional and moral implications of things. And, yes, this's a story about a morally grey mc. Don't expect to be spoon-fed "and this's why that thing's bad, kids".

Currently I've outlined all the main story beats up until post EW, so it's like, not being winged as I go. Yes I refine things here and there, but I know where I'm going. I'm going ham!!!! With the lorebending post ShB. Initially I didn't plan to, but the more I learned about Vivi and personally grew as a writer, the more courage I got to "divorce" from canon. The general xiv story may still be good wherever it's headed, but it's not suited for an established wolgraha, so I'm making food for myself.

Everyone imagines the lil scenes from their wol's life, I'm taking that a tiiiiiny step further. Fragments tells a cohesive story that's looking to be the longest project at least in our corner. I can and will hyperfixate on this for years.

I started out just like many others, being hit with ShB like a truck, I wanted to put a catboy under a microscope and rotate him forever. Although I'd already been drawing for decades, I didn't have the comic-making skills yet, or eloquence to write the dialogue, so I spent the first half of 2022 self-studying, just because I needed a mouth to be able to scream about my ship.

Vivi didn't exist prior to my obsession with Exarch. He was made for this, he started out as a reagent (or a foil, now that I know fancy writing terms) for a rich and fun chemistry, and keep myself entertained for years, first and foremost.

Me, a fool: okay let's make a guy that falls in love with Exarch in this particular moment, what kinda life must he have led to- Me: ....oh no

The chemistry quickly bubbled up and exploded in my face, involving not only Exarch, but other characters (first as a means to subtly tell about Vivi, then they also demanded their own screentime), and here I am, sitting with a massive script on my hands, drawing my blorbos every day. Thanks for enabling that btw.

I care about characters a lot. I ask a lot of whys and hows. I'm critical-minded and burned on many bad stories that did their characters dirty, and I wanna be an opposing example. What I'm doing is extremely ambitious and risky, yes, but I can only invite you to tag along and see if I stick to my word.

The internet's a cruel and unforgiving place nowadays, and here I am, pitting my passion against what feels like decaying humanity. I'm making this comic to keep myself happy above all else, being sincere and cringe because life's too short to be anything else.
