2021 Volkswagen Jetta Brings Updates to GLI and More
The Volkswagen Jetta was redesigned for the 2019 model year, and carried over mostly unchanged for 2020. The same is largely true for the 2021 model year of this midsize sedan, although a notable update is a new infotainment system in higher trim levels.
2021 Volkswagen Jetta: What’s New?
What remains the same is the Jetta’s handsome, if not eye-catching, design. The sharp crease just below the belt line adds some character to the flanks, but the ho-hum front end seems designed more to avoid giving offense than it is to inspire. What’s more interesting about the Jetta is that it rides on the well-loved MQB platform—shared with everything from VW’s Golf, GTI, and Atlas to Audi’s A3 and Q3— and also provides owners with more room inside than the last-generation model.
And there’s still no word about the rumored Jetta R, although you can be sure we’ll be the first to tell you about it should it happen.
2021 Volkswagen Jetta Trim Levels and Equipment
The regular 2021 Jetta comes in five trim levels: S, SE, R-Line, SEL, and SEL Premium. The Jetta GLI, the sportiest version, comes in two trims: S and Autobahn.
2021 Volkswagen Jetta Infotainment and Technology
Arguably the biggest change for 2021 is the inclusion of the new MIB3 infotainment system on the top two trim levels: SEL and SEL Premium. The other trim levels make do with the carryover MIB II system, a touchscreen setup. Previously, for 2020, the Jetta featured a 6.5-inch screen in S, SE, and R-Line models, while the SEL and SEL Premium use an 8.0-inch screen. The SEL Premium also offers the Discover Media functionality with 2.5D navigation.
For the Jetta GLI, only the Autobahn gets the upgraded MIB3 infotainment system.
2021 Volkswagen Jetta Interior Features
For 2021, there is little to note beyond what we’ve already said about the 2019 and 2020 models. The interior remains the same, which is mostly a good thing, considering the available Volkswagen version of Audi’s excellent Virtual Cockpit system, smartphone integration options, and subdued yet sporty design. The SE, SEL, and SEL Premium trims offer standard contrasting stitching on the wheel and shifter, and the SE and SEL trims also get six-way power adjustment on the driver’s seats.
2021 Volkswagen Engine, Transmission, and Chassis
Nothing new to report here. The sole engine is a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four, and we presume it will still offer a manual transmission on the base trim only. All other trims will get an eight-speed automatic. The engine makes 148 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, which is adequate but nothing to get the heart racing.
Unless you’re talking about the Jetta GLI. As before, it features a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four pumping out 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, available with a manual, and offering a lot more performance—if not the passion that previous GLIs instilled. We expect the 2021 GLI experience to be identical to 2020 save the infotainment and safety updates.
2021 Volkswagen Jetta Safety
The GLI Autobahn gets a host of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam control. This is in addition to the standard post-collision braking system, which debuted for 2020. There are no other apparent changes for safety systems in any other Jetta version or trim.

2019’s Top Rides: Part 2
By Michael Hozjan
With 2020 quickly approaching I decided to take a look back at a few of my most memorable rides this year. Happily there were a few surprises along the way, vehicles that I thought would be mediocre at best, turned out to be hidden jewels. Here’s part two of three that will follow in the weeks to come.
Hyundai Elantra: An Affordable Class Act
Hyundai’s Elantra is one of those cars that blends unnoticed into the automotive landscape - until now. Redesigned a couple of years back, for 2019 the Elantra gets a sexy mid-cycle makeover. From the windshield forward the car is all new while a new trunk lid, taillights and bumper freshen up the back. Thankfully Hyundai isn’t following the competitions’ boy racer look, opting instead for a rich, sophisticated demeanor that doesn’t alienate its youth market. I had more than a fair share of twenty something’s giving me the thumbs up.
That classy design follows into the greenhouse with clean flowing lines and some welcome upgrades/revisions to the climate and stereo controls and moving to white on black gauges. Regardless of trim, a six-way power driver’s seat and a height adjustable passenger seat are standard. They’re firm and comfortable with great support and I preferred them to the pricier GT version of the 5-door hatchback I had a few weeks later.
Prices start reasonably enough at $17,099 for the base Essential trim line (who comes up with these names and who would brag about having the Essential model?) The Essential offers such essential items (I had to) as heated front seats, Bluetooth, 6-speed manual and a rear view camera. My car had the optional ($1700) automatic with hill start assist, which is available only on the automatic – (why on an automatic?). From there the option/trim levels grow to peak at $27,549 for the Ultimate trim line at which point you can lock/unlock/start your car with your cell phone thanks to Hyundai’s Bluelink. Forward collision avoidance, lane departure, lane keep assist, blind spot warning with lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert are also included, and if an inch makes a difference you get an 8” screen over the other trims’ seven inch unit.
Three driving modes allow you to select shift point, steering wheel and throttle controls to suit your tastes and needs. Sport mode makes the most out of the 2.0L four cylinder’s 147 horses and 132 lb-ft. of torque bringing acceptable fun to your driving experience but speed demons may want to opt for the GT N Line or Sport trims where a 1.6L turbocharged inline four punches out 201 horses and 195 lb-ft of torque, but that’s another story – stay tuned. Oh and to add to the confusion there’s also a 162 horsepower version of the 2.0L in the GT trim. But if you’re into fuel economy, the base car will impress, I managed to get 5.9-l/100 km with mostly highway excursions.
Compared head to head with its two closest competitors, the Civic and Corolla the Elantra is a no brainer, delivering better fuel economy, better head room, better rear seat hip room (yes there’s room for two adults back there), as well as offering a slew of items as standard equipment that you’d pay extra for or simply are not available on the other two like a heated steering wheel. On top of which the Hyundai’s ultra-high-strength steel structure gives it a quieter ride.
So if you’re looking for a handsome family sedan that can haul four adults in comfort and not eat up the family budget, hop on down to your Hyundai dealer.
Volkswagen Golf GTI Rabbit: Return of the Rascally Rabbit
First there was the Mini Cooper, then the Honda CVCC, and then Volkswagen unleashed the Rabbit GTI changing forever the persona of the front-wheel drive sedan. The GTI made German handling and performance affordable, suddenly you didn’t need to go to the Bimmer dealership for some Teutonic giddy up and go. It also changed Volkswagen’s image overnight.
Forty plus years later the GTI is still the hot hatch to beat, perfectly balancing comfort, performance and style.
This year VW resurrected the Rabbit name as an added trim model to the Golf GTI line. If you’re confused, don’t be there are three trim levels available to the GTI buyer; the base GTI starts at a very reasonable $30,845 and comes with 17” wheels and a 6-speed manual transmission, the Rabbit edition, aside from a cooler color pallet, adds Dynamic Chassis Control, push start button, an 8 speaker Fender sound system, LED headlights with adaptive front lights, with the Rabbit logo embroider on the Clark Cloth bucket seat backs. The Rabbit also gets 7.5” x 18” black alloy wheels, all for $33,995. Next up the corporate ladder is the Autobahn edition at $36,145. For the extra two + grand you get satellite navigation, Sirius XM sat radio, a panoramic sunroof, manual height adjustment on the comfortable, supportive buckets and power lumbar support. The 7-speed DSG automatic is a $1,400 option across the board and unfortunately my left foot was sent to the rest home as my Cornflower Blue (yes that’s the real name) tester arrived in the form of an automatic with Tiptronic paddle shifters.
Regardless of trim, the GTI feeds 228 horses to the front wheels through a turbo charged, direct injected, 2.0L TSI inline four cylinder, by comparison non GTI Golfs leave the factory with a 147 horse, 1.4L TSI engine. VW philes will notice an 8 horsepower bump from last year’s GTI thanks to some factory tuning. In addition all GTIs get a limited slip differential, allowing you to get better traction and control on the twisties by delivering power to the outside front wheel. Enthusiasts will also be pleased to learn that VW has retained a manual, non-electronic hand brake.
No heated steering wheel.
In short the Rabbit carries all the right stuff. Power delivery is smooth with just an ever so slight hint of turbo lag. If there is a fault, it lies when down shifting with the paddles, as the automatic is slower than I’d like. The adaptive dampening suspension, coupled with the limited slip diff takes an already perfect daily driver and bumps it up several notches on the fun factor.
My Rabbit came optioned with the $1,750 Driver Assistance Plus package (autonomous e-braking with pedestrian monitoring, blind spot detection, rear traffic alert, lane assist and adaptive cruise)
In the cockpit GTI’s personality differs from plane Jane Golfs with the red ambient lighting and illuminated doorsills. Aluminum pedals, a flat-bottomed steering wheel welcome you to take charge. The instrument cluster is specific to the GTI also. In true German fashion, premium materials and soft-touch plastics are found throughout. Headroom, legroom front and aft is excellent. While all controls are easy to read and manipulate, sadly living in these northern climes a heated steering wheel is missing from the equation.
The Golf has always offered a degree of sophisticated road mannerism not found in any comparably priced sedan and for that matter in few pricier sedans, the GTI takes that formula up a notch while the Rabbit trim offers all the amenities a performance sedan needs. It may be an overused cliché, but the GTI is a true driver’s car. Now if they would only give me a press car with a standard tranny!
Price as tested: $37,550*
*Includes A/C Tax, Tire Tax and Freight.
Buick Encore: Luxury comes in a small package
I almost totaled the Encore within two minutes of getting behind its wheel. It would have been entirely my fault but quick reflexes and maybe an angel or two, prevented me from a lengthy explanation to my GM rep. I had just surrendered the Rabbit GTI back to the good folks at Volkswagen and jumped into the Buick to head back home when I approached the highway on ramp a little too eagerly thinking I was still in the Rabbit. Well it got squirrelly pretty quick and I was reminded just as fast that I was no longer in a road hugging sedan but a tall, skinny crossover that shared nearly as much road room as the Rabbit.
Now in its seventh year the Encore got a minor facelift a couple of years back, with the most noticeable difference being the waterfall grill that paid homage to ‘50s era Roadmaster. It worked on the larger than life land yacht but did little for the diminutive crossover. The new look takes away from the dorky toy look and gives it a refined appearance. With more and more manufacturers getting into the lucrative compact crossover segment and the Encore’s sales showing no signs of slowing, Buick is doing something right.
Although the Encore is the smallest vehicle in Buick’s lineup, it packs a lot of punch. Three trim levels make up the line starting at $26,400 for the front drive Preferred model that comes with a 138 horsepower, 1.4L DOHC turbocharged inline four. The standard goodie bag consists of Bluetooth connectivity, OnStar, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, a rear vision camera, sat radio, electronic stability control with traction control and steering wheel mounted controls on a leather steering wheel.
The $28, 400 Sport Touring rendition gets remote start, a rear spoiler, fancier 18” wheels and fog lamps but opens you up to a slew of options that are not available on the base model including a 153 horse 1.4L SIDI turbocharged four with Stop/Start technology.
My tester, the top-of-the-line Essence trim starts at $33,700 and adds all-wheel drive, heated front buckets, remote start, blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, 6-way power driver’s seat, dual climate zone controls, heated steering wheel. It also came with the optional, aforementioned, Direct Injection 153 horse, 177 ft-lb of torque, four. Both mills feed the wheels through a seamless 6-speed transmission.
Yes at 33 grand the little Buick gets pricey considering its size, but not everyone needs or wants a larger vehicle, so for all the bells and whistles, the Encore’s price gets justifiable.
What makes the Encore a winner in the subcompact crossover segment is its silky ride, a trait worthy of the Buick name and even after my initial kerfuffle, its handling can best be described as nimble – just as long as you remember what you are driving and not driving.
Inside you’ll find an interior that’s tastefully done with great fit and finish, the controls are easy to read and use. There’s plenty of storage bins about for all your travel needs. The seats are comfortable with plenty of headroom, as you’d expect from the tall design. Two burly adults will probably find shoulder and hip room on the tight side and despite Buick’s claim of it being a 5-passenger…well if the three in the back are kids. There’s 18.8 cu.ft. of cargo room behind the rear seats and 48.4 cubes with the rear seats folded. Folding the back seats however means moving the front seats up, diminishing legroom and still not getting a flat floor. In its favor is that the cargo bay is taller than most other compacts.
If you’re looking for a ride that offers ease of entry, a low lift over for the cargo bay while offering an above average ride and small enough to negotiate urban centers’ shrinking streets the Encore is sure to please, all while being a miser at the gas pump.

Volkswagen Golf 8 2020 Exterior, Price, Engine, Interior
New Post has been published on https://www.vwcartrend.com/volkswagen-golf-8-2020-exterior-price-engine-interior/
Volkswagen Golf 8 2020 Exterior, Price, Engine, Interior
Volkswagen Golf 8 2020 Exterior, Price, Engine, Interior – The latest spy images show that the 7th-generation Golf is at the moment considering a mid-period revise for the 2020 model year. Involving some prototypes evaluating approximately Europe, a Golf R model has recently been found. The spy photographs show a variety of design changes on both the hatchback and wagon models. Gossip has it that the VW Golf R Variant (wagon) will not allow it to be to the U.S. marketplace. The Volkswagen Golf 8 2020 could reach the dealerships in mid-2019, following trusted reports.
Volkswagen Golf 8 2020 Exterior
Just because it is generally the instance with Volkswagens, the forthcoming medium-cycle up-date won’t bring extreme changes to the exterior. As an alternative, expect to have the Volkswagen Golf 8 2020 to acquire a somewhat revised bumper and grille. Other visible changes will comprise of new Directed signatures for the headlights and taillights. The spied analyse mule disclosed a bigger heart bumper vent and reshaped section air intakes. Concerning the rear conclusion, it continues to tough to identify any changes other than the modified taillights. Ahead of that, expect to have the new Golf to offer you new wheel layouts and exterior colourations.
Volkswagen Golf 8 2020 Interior
Changes will be a lot more subtle on the inside the cabin. Other than new upholstery hues, the original structure will continue to be generally unaffected. Now, the Volkswagen Golf 8 2020 will bring substantial additional improvements as it pertains to technologies. Expect to have it to feature a revised infotainment system with a larger sized touchscreen, as very well as Volkswagen’s most current security methods. Of course, you will have a variety of characteristics that set the Golf 8 apart from regular types. These include sports chairs coated in Nappa natural leather, a glowing blue-lighted dashboard and a several-spoke steering wheel with chrome “R” custom logo.
Volkswagen Golf 8 2020 Engine
The Volkswagen Golf 8 2020 may have the common 2.0-litre turbocharged three-tube within its hood. Established productivity amounts have but to arrive but we never anticipate this device to stray far away from the latest version. This means the engine is very likely to produce 290 hp and 280 pound-ft . of torque. All-time generates will once again come regular, with the 6-speed manual and 6-speed two clutch system transmissions accessible.
Volkswagen Golf 8 2020 Release Date And Price
The Volkswagen Golf 8 2020 changes will not provide anything at all spectacular to the car business as pointed out. The past revises before the next-era can make its first appearance will assist this model in keeping very competitive on this race. The Volkswagen Golf R’s key competitors include things like various formidable models this kind of as the Ford Focus RS and Honda Civic Type R.

The Best Cars From the 2020 Geneva Show That Didn’t Happen
Growing concern around the global spread of novel coronavirus—and the Swiss government’s ban on gatherings of 1,000 people or more—shut down this year’s Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS). It’s the first year, apparently, since World War II ended the show has been canceled, but even without a physical venue, Geneva’s spirit was unaffected. Automakers with new-model debuts and concept-car reveals already planned for the show went ahead and pulled sheets off their wares anyway—digitally, at least, This means there were choices when it came to picking favorites. These are our staffers’ top picks from the 2020 Geneva auto show that wasn’t, chosen from behind our computer screens instead of from the Palexpo Center in Switzerland where we all were supposed to be this week:
Polestar Precept EV Concept
As the electric vehicle offshoot of Volvo, the Polestar brand is supposed to stand for clean energy and clean Scandinavian design, with a little performance thrown in for good measure. The Precept concept is pure electric and purely pleasing in the simplicity of its surfaces and sharp character lines. The four-door grand tourer looks like a great way to enjoy the countryside or a commute, and either way you can feel good about, it too: The interior uses flax-based natural fiber composites, recycled plastic bottles, fishing nets and cork. For a little elegance, the Polestar emblem is a hologram inside a piece of Swedish crystal between the rear seat headrests. Classy.—Alisa Priddle
2021 Volkswagen Golf GTI MkVIII
The Golf GTI is an automotive icon, and we knew the next one—the model’s eighth generation—was coming. Now that it’s here, sure, the styling could be more aggressive and the power figures turned out to be far lower than had been rumored before the show. However, these are small nits to pick. The GTI is in no way less important to both its fans and Volkswagen itself because of them. The model’s nearly perfect balance of performance and everyday practicality, making it a wonderful day-to-day companion, looks to be unaffected by the redesign. I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of this thing and see if it lives up to 45 years of Golf GTI heritage.—Nick Yekikian
The star cars of Geneva shows are typically sexy or significant. Or occasionally both, like the Jaguar E-type that stole the 1961 event. What the eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI lacks in sheer sex appeal it more than makes up for in terms of significance. The original Golf GTI, unveiled at the 1975 Frankfurt motor show, was the seminal hot hatch. Forty-five years later, the new MkVIII version remains true to the original’s carefully honed balance of fun and functionality. The styling is mature and sophisticated, yet with one look you know it’s not only a GTI, but also that it’s the new GTI. There’s a knowing whimsy about it, too, evident in the plaid cloth trim on the seats and dimpled golf-ball shift knob on the six-speed manual shifter. Most importantly, the drive shouldn’t disappoint: The 2.0-liter turbo four under the hood now makes 241 horsepower and the chassis hardware promises the trademark blend of precision, response and refinement that has for decades made the Golf GTI king of the hot hatches.—Angus MacKenzie
BMW i4 Concept
The way BMW’s i4 concept looks is no doubt polarizing, but I really don’t care about any of that. BMW can do whatever they want with the kidney grill. It is, afterall, their very own design signature. What I care more about is whether this i4 is going to be a good electric car. The world needs good EVs, and if BMW can sprinkle a little “Ultimate Driving Machine” magic into its newest eye-catching electric vehicle, I’m all in.—Nick Yekikian
2020 McLaren 765LT
The Lamborghini Miura’s reveal at Geneva in 1966 started it, I suppose, but in recent years it’s been impossible to walk the show floor without tripping over yet another hypercar, each more ludicrously powerful and lavishly finished than the last. The 2020 McLaren 765LT has a mere 755 horsepower and will do “only” 205 mph, which sort of makes it middle of the road for Geneva these days. But it’s a real car, not eye-candy. Those edgy aero bits are there because they’re wind-tunnel tested, not because some designer thought they looked rad. The interior ambience is purposeful, not treasure cave of glittery geegaws. The McLaren 720S on which the 765LT is based is already a stupendously fast yet remarkably approachable hypercar you can drive every day. With more power, less weight, revised suspension and tires, improved aerodynamics, and brakes lifted straight from McLaren’s million-dollar track rat, the Senna, the 765LT is the serious driver’s daily driver.—Angus MacKenzie
2021 Alfa Romeo GTA / GTAm
After debuting to much acclaim for 2017, Alfa Romeo’s Giulia Quadrifoglio perhaps realized headlines were about it skew away from its wonderful sports-sedan qualities and toward its finicky reliability. Whether the car’s issues are as widespread as the internet makes them out to be (so, likely not that bad), this car—which I very much like—needed a little boost. Enter the Giulia GTA. It’s the same Giulia Quadrifoglio I love, now with 540 horsepower and racy body addenda. There’s even a GTAm version without rear seats and a roll bar where they were removed. That should be enough to change the conversation around Alfa’s jewel.—Alexander Stoklosa
Koenigsegg Gemera
The Koenigsegg Gemera’s 1,677-hp gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain and 248-mph top speed are admittedly impressive, but its interior is even more so. Let’s start with how you get into this four-seater. Although it features only two doors, the Gemera’s openings are big enough that rear-seat riders can enter and exit the car without contorting about the front thrones. As an aside, how great are those Subaru SVX-like window openings? The Gemera’s leather and suede interior is truly cosseting, too, or at least appears that way in photos. (Remember, we didn’t get to go to the actual Geneva show, which was canceled.) There are eight cupholders (four of which are heated, four of which are cooled), three climate zones, big front and rear infotainment screens, and a skylight that stretches across the passenger compartment à la the 2004 Nissan Maxima. It’s somehow both purposeful and kitschy and I love it.—Greg Fink
The Koenigsegg Gemera is officially nuts. Four seats, 2 ISOFIX car seat receivers, eight cupholders (four cold, four hot!), front and rear wireless phone charging, 1,677 horsepower from a 2.0-liter three-cylinder with three electric motors, room for four carry-on bags, zero-to-60 mph in less than 1.9 seconds, four reading lights, memory foam seats, 250-mph top speed, front and rear entertainment screens, and can run around as a pure electric for 30 miles. Limited to just 300 units, order yours now! And if you don’t have eleventy billion dollars or whatever the hell these will cost, just shut your eyes and dream.—Jonny Lieberman
2021 Bentley Mulliner Bacalar
Buckle up for the Bacalar, Bentley’s new coachbuilt creation from its in-house coachbuilder, Mulliner. This creation is a bacchanal of luxurious “moreness,” which is a made-up word for overdone. The styling is mostly not overdone, and is quite attractive, but not as much so as the hand-built Bacalar’s stunning detailing, sustainable bent, and rich and interesting interior materials. Does your Bentley Continental GT, the car that donated its running gear to this Mulliner special, have wood trim that’s 5,000 years old? How about a price tag of $1.9 million? Didn’t think so. The Bacalar, therefore, is wonderfully maximal—and thus perfect for the Geneva Motor Show for which it was so fashionably late that it never arrived.—Alexander Stoklosa
Morgan Plus Four
The Morgan Plus Four takes everything that’s great about owning a classic sports car and adds in a dash of modern technology for good measure. Yes, the Plus Four looks half-a-century old, but beneath that old-world bodywork sits a modern BMW-sourced turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. With 255 horses, the little four-pot is capable of pushing the British roadster to a top speed of 149 mph. More importantly, the Plus Four comes with an honest-to-goodness six-speed manual transmission, although an eight-speed automatic gearbox is also available. Old-school charm and modern performance? Sign me up.—Greg Fink
Hyundai Prophecy Concept
Hyundai continues to push the design envelope, and its new Prophecy concept, which was supposed to make its debut in Geneva but instead dropped online, is wild. We see a lot of different cars hidden in the Prophecy’s design, including the Mercedes CLS, Porsche Panamera, and Tesla Model 3—just to name a few—but even if some design cues look familiar, the overall execution is unique. The aggressively raked roofline, wide rear haunches, and gigantic turbine-like wheels work together to create an aesthetic that Hyundai calls “Sensuous Sportiness,” which we think is apt and something we all should aspire to. In addition to being a design showcase for the brand, the Prophecy previews future EV, autonomous, and connectivity technologies. Plus, the seats are upholstered in a green plaid pattern to match the light show taking place in the cabin. How can you not love that?—Alex Nishimoto

This Just In: Which Volkswagen Are You? VW Matches Best Models For Each Zodiac Sign
A car is not just a means of transportation – it also offers clues to your personality, lifestyle and character traits. And, with so many great vehicles to choose from it can be hard to find the perfect match.
To explore these cosmic connections from a different angle, Volkswagen's News Department, perhaps with a little teleworking time on their hands, have developed a guide that matches the attributes of each zodiac sign to current and classic Volkswagen models, and we've presented it here, purely for its entertainment value:
Aquarius: Lively, sociable and original, you prefer the unconventional to the traditional. The Beetle, the quintessential Age of Aquarius car, is fun, unique and one-of-a-kind – just like you.
Pisces: Intuitive, imaginative, creative and compassionate, you are escapist by nature. An iconic Microbus will give you the freedom to follow your whimsies and hit the road (and knowing your selfless ways, we’re sure you’ll have plenty of passengers). Top Cars of the 2020 Geneva Motor Show That Never Was
Out of an “abundance of caution,” a phrase we’re hearing a lot, the Swiss government pulled the plug on the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS). Since this is 2020, not 1990, the news from the show went out anyway as automakers switched to video reveals over the past week. Geneva intros fall into three categories: a wide range of mainstream and upscale cars from across the world; a lot of EVs and some plug-in hybrids because Europe is moving more quickly (governments for sure, buyers somewhat less so) to alternative energy sources; and the eye-candy $150,000-$3 million cars for those flush with oil money and others who Americans, from a distance, sniff at as Eurotrash.
Geneva is not just any auto show. In the even years when there’s no Frankfurt show, this is the world’s most important auto show. And unlike Frankfurt, Detroit, and Tokyo, there’s no hometown bias since Switzerland has barely any auto industry. It does have a lot of wealthy residents and visitors with money to burn. Here’s our take on virtual Geneva 2020.
2021 Audi A3 gets a standard 10.1-inch center display. The instrument panel goes up to 12.3 inches.
The 2021 Audi A3 debuted with a showing of the Sportback version, meaning hatchback, which will ship later this year along with the A3 sedan. It has bolder styling and will be heavy on tech with a 10.1-inch center stack display standard, this on a subcompact vehicle about 175 inches long. At a time when some mainstream small cars are doing 8 inches as standard, this is one way to justify a price tag that can push into the forties. The instrument panel is digital, too (dubbed Audi Virtual Cockpit), with a 12.3-inch version optional and offering more display modes.
International editions will get small turbocharged gas and diesel engines. The US gets a larger turbo-four (gas) with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Sport S3 and RS3 versions will come later. Ditto hybrid versions. The big difference: the US for sure will get an A3 sedan but probably not the A3 Sportback. That’s because it’s a hatchback. But you could also call it a small SUV – many of which have sloping rear rooflines – and we’d happily buy. Although to our eyes it mostly looks like a wagon, which is another body style Americans aren’t currently keen on.
The Fiat 500 will be an EV-only vehicle with a range 0f 175-200 miles depending on test procedure.
The beloved little Fiat 500 Cinquecento (Italian for 500) – beloved for its style and sporty driving, less so for reliability – is gone as a combustion-engine car. Bigger Fiats such as the Fiat 500X motor on, and the Cinquecento is to become a battery electric vehicle. An older version was called the 500e but now that electric is the only way you’ll get a Fiat 500, it will be the 2021 Fiat 500, no e.
The new EV 500 has doubled its range. Fiat says it can drive up to 199 miles (320 km) using a 42.0-kWh battery. That’s on the European WLTP test, which stands for Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure. Harmony or not, US EPA numbers are lower, perhaps 175 miles. For a car that’d be great urban runabout, 175 would be plenty, but American buyers like 250-300 miles even more. Because of this, Fiat has not yet said if it’s bringing the new 500 to the US. Right now, pure EV sales are less than 1.5 percent of the US vehicle market, and the majority of those sales belong to Tesla, at least currently.
Eight-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI. It’s the only Golf Americans will get: the fast one.
Golf GTI cockpit.
The 2021 Golf GTI is redesigned inside and out. This is the sportiest of VW’s compact (actually, subcompact at 168 inches long), four-door Golfs. Let’s jump ahead to why lots of people buy GTIs: The 2.0-liter turbo-four engine climbs from 228 to 245 hp, and torque from 258 to 276 pound-feet. The standard transmission is a six-speed manual, or millennial anti-theft device, as VW says in its ads – and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is offered.
VW had some years with mixed reliability. That’s better. The most recent Consumer Reports reliability survey has VeeDub right at average. And since reliability has gone up over time, VW is in a good spot. Still, as VW works to rebuild sales, it isn’t bringing every variation to the US. For now, only the sportiest Golf will be offered, even if this car, with its upright seating, provides a lot of rear-seat comfort and luggage capacity.
Hyundai Prophecy is much smoother-looking than 2019’s sharply edged 45 Concept.
The Hyundai 911 Turbo. Or so it seems.
How many more reminders do we need to understand what a mature car company the Hyundai group has become? Now there’s the Prophecy concept EVd using Hyundai’s Sensuous Sportiness concept. The effect is of an elongated, lowered Tesla Model 3 done right, with beautiful curving lines and few interruptions (such by side mirrors) in the concept. In the rear view, there’s a spoiler that pays homage to Porsche 911s. Inside the cockpit, the steering would be done by joystick, at least on the concept.
Propulsion, were the concept to come to market, would be electric-only, and Hyundai vows to have 44 electrified vehicles by 2025. According to Hyundai, “The expectation is to sell more than 670,000 battery and fuel cell electric vehicles annually by this time [2025], and to be positioned among the top three EV providers globally.”
BMW i4 Concept: Shipping in Europe late 2021, US early 2022.
The BMW i4 Concept is the stalking horse for a late 2021 / early 2020 3 Series-sized EV. It’s a closer-to-production advance on the Concept 4 coupe from last fall’s Frankfurt Motor Show. (See, with all the motor shows, sometimes you have more than one concept, plus the final shipping car, and you’ve got new at three shows.) It will be a powerhouse, with 530 hp and a sub-4-second 0-60 mph time.
Range is in flux, or rather the world’s competing test cycles are not in sync. The WLTP figure says 600 km or 373 miles. But BMW says on EPA tests, range will likely be in the mid-200s. Length is listed at 189 inches, or 3 inches longer than the 3 Series sedan. Based on BMW’s evolving naming convention, 4 in the name means 4 Series means the coupe version of the 3 Series, and four doors make it a 4 Series Gran Coupe. We believe most buyers don’t need 300 miles of range most of the time. But try telling that to someone cross-shopping the Tesla Model 3 that provides two options: 250 miles (standard range) or 322 miles (long range). While Tesla is the industry’s benchmark for battery efficiency, long range, and loyal followers who put Bernie Bros to shame, BMW is the leader in cockpit telematics and the past few years the premium German automakers have developed a reputation for highly reliable cars (Porsche, Audi, and BMW; Mercedes-Benz is a bit below average currently).
Fisker Ocean will have a head-up displaying karaoke lyrics. Your life is now complete.
Fisker Ocean cockpit. No, no 48-inch display across the dash. That’s Byton.
The Fisker Ocean SUV got its European (virtual) debut at the non-Geneva show, reprising some of what the industry saw in Las Vegas at CES 2020. It is “the world’s most sustainable vehicle” with a vegan interior, offers a solar roof adding up to 1,000 miles a year of range (that is, 3 miles a day) in sunny climes, and Fisker would prefer to lease out the Ocean rather than sell this compact (183-inch) SUV: $379 a month with $3,000 down.
Safety fanatics may freak, but Fisker says there’ll be a head-up display with karaoke mode, meaning the lyrics to songs will be projected at the base of the windshield so you can sing along. Fisker’s challenge is that the company will be coming to market along with a lot of other electric vehicles from vendors with lengthy pedigrees. But then, Tesla was just a startup, too, and not long ago.
Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport: You can’t afford it. Most people who can are too old to get in. There is justice.
Some Bugatti customers had a complaint. Not the $3 million price tag. (Paying that kind of money proves you’re a Player.) Nor was it the top speed well over 200 miles per hour. Rather it was the feeling the car wasn’t 100 percent comfortable to drive at speed. Now comes the Chiron Pur Sport.
The Pur Sport is lighter, but it also has a six-foot-wide spoiler to plant the car at its insanely high speeds. The engine remains the same: 16 cylinders, quad-turbos, and 1,500 horsepower. The tradeoff is the top speed of about 235 mph has been scaled back to 217 mph. Price will be $3.3 million and 65 will be built.

Volkswagen Up GTI relaunched in UK for 2020 Volkswagen has relaunched the Up GTI hot city car in the UK, eight months after its production allocation was fulfilled and it was withdrawn to coincide with the transition to WLTP emissions testing. The Suzuki Swift Sport rival’s return to the market comes as Volkswagen gears up to begin deliveries of the revised e-Up, which, unlike its new Seat Mii Electric and Skoda Citigo-e iV siblings, will be sold alongside petrol variants. Given the Up GTI's relatively short time off sale, it returns largely visually unchanged, save for the addition of the redesigned Volkswagen logo and a new set of 17in alloy wheels with low-profile tyres. As before, the seats are trimmed in Jacara checked fabric, which first featured on the original Golf GTI, with a flat-bottomed steering wheel and GTI-badged gearstick further differentiating it from the rest of the Up range. Power output from the transversely mounted turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine remains 113bhp - nearly double that of the standard Up - and drive is still sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. The car achieves 53.3mpg on the WLTP combined cycle and remains capable of accelerating from 0-62mph in 8.8sec and on to 122mph. The most significant change for prospective Up GTI buyers is a price increase from £13,750 to £15,895 before options, which represents an £3445 premium over the standard Up. Prices rise to £16,295 for the five-door variant. Joining the Up GTI in showrooms will be a new Up

Future Cars! 2020 and Beyond
Car buyers—you’re in for a treat. Because no matter your budget for a new car, the future is bright. The wait is almost over for Corvette fans waiting for a mid-engine layout, but with the Shelby GT500 and new M3 on the way, the Chevy will have some serious sports car company.
And maybe you’ve heard, but our automotive future is electrified. From Fiat to Audi, fully electric cars you might actually want to drive will be here soon (if a Model 3 and the other existing options aren’t your style).
So keep reading for more on future cars headed to a dealership near you.
More on future cars:
Future SUVs! 2020 and Beyond
WHAT’S NOW
Chevrolet Corvette
What’s New: The long-awaited mid-engine Corvette is finally here. After years of rumors, spy shots, leaks, and speculation, Chevrolet will finally peel the camo off this July. When it does, we expect to find a dual-overhead-cam V-8 under the rear glass with a pair of turbochargers driving the rear wheels through a manual or dual-clutch automatic transaxle. Multiple power outputs are expected courtesy of various displacements, with both 4.2-liter and 5.5-liter versions to be fitted. An all-new electrical architecture will feature top-of-the-line sensors and computers for performance and handling enhancement, but you’ll no doubt be able to turn them all off, too. Inside, Chevrolet has gone upscale with a classy, driver-focused interior featuring premium materials and a digital instrument cluster. Although base-model Corvettes will start at about $70,000, higher-performance models will quickly shoot up in price to cover both the development cost and the improvements in technology, performance, and comfort. But they should still remain relatively attainable.
What’s Not: Base cars are expected to employ Chevrolet’s tried-and-true 6.2-liter pushrod V-8. Midrange cars might also employ the supercharged pushrod engine. We predict Chevrolet will continue to offer a removable targa roof that will store in the cargo area.
When: July 18, 2019
How Much: $70,000-$140,000 (est)
Porsche Taycan
What’s New: Everything. For some time now, the highly anticipated first all-electric Porsche sedan has been caught testing, piling up about 1.2 million miles in the process. It’s looking less futuristic than its Mission E concept, but we know an 800-volt system sends power to two electric motors generating a combined 440 kW (590 hp), and that power is sent to all four wheels. Said to be quicker than 3.5 seconds to 60 mph and with more than 300 miles range, the Taycan will be available at the end of this year. Buyers will receive three years of free charging at the 484 Electrify America public stations across the country. Using DC fast charging, up 60 miles of range can be had in just four minutes or roughly 250 miles in about 15 minutes. Some reports indicate the automaker wants to introduce higher-performance variants and a Targa. We can’t wait.
What’s Not: Even EV skeptic (and longtime Porsche test driver/brand ambassador) Walter Röhrl was impressed: “It’s crazy. In all my years of rallying, I’ve never experienced such performance. The Taycan goes so well at such speed, really tremendous. If I had to drive it blindfolded, I would still know immediately that I was sitting in a Porsche.”
When: Late 2019
How Much: $85,000 (est)
BMW M3
What’s New: The 2021 M3 will carry the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine as the X3M and X4M crossovers, meaning 473 hp and 442 lb-ft of output (or thereabouts, due to slightly different tuning for a sedan and crossover). That should result in 0–60 acceleration around 3.7 seconds. (Note: The current model tops out at 444 hp on the CS version.) A year or so down the line, the M3 Competition will provide in the neighborhood of 500-plus hp. The new G20 platform rides with 1.6 inches more wheelbase and has a wider track, which might prioritize corner-on-rails stability over quick-twitch handling. The M3 should allow for both RWD and AWD applications. (AWD might be defeatable to RWD if desired, as on the M5.) There is rumor of a “Pure” stripped-down base model with a stick shift (yay!) but slightly less power (sigh).
What’s Not: Some switches, controls, and knobs. It’s a new platform with upgraded engines, even a new infotainment interface.
When: Early 2020
How Much: $68,000 (est)
Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
What’s New: The Shelby GT500 returns for the first time on the sixth-gen Mustang. Using a new engine and some aero enhancements, Ford promises this Mustang can hit 180 mph and that it won’t overheat at the track. This Shelby ought to be easier to lap, too, as it comes standard with a seven-speed twin-clutch automatic. There are no plans for a manual in 2020.
What’s Not: Although it shares its displacement with the GT350’s flat-plane-crank V-8, the Shelby GT500’s 5.2-liter V-8 is a cross-plane design. Between that and the supercharger, Ford claims power and torque have increased from 526 hp and 429 lb-ft in the GT350 to more than 700 hp and 600 lb-ft in the GT500.
When: Late 2019
How Much: $75,000 (est)
Cadillac CT5
What’s New: The CT5 is a new nameplate for Cadillac. This compact sedan replaces the ATS and CTS and is an evolution of Cadillac’s design language. The standard engine is the new 237-hp, 258-lb-ft 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged I-4 that made its first appearance in the CT6 refresh. A modified 335-hp, 400 lb-ft 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 (smaller turbos) is available and debuts in the CT5. Both are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. New rear badging will denote a rounded-off torque figure in Newton-meters. Super Cruise will be added in the second model year. A CT5-V is expected in the future.
What’s Not: It rides on GM’s rear-wheel-drive Alpha platform with some enhancements to the carryover front multilink strut and rear five-link suspension. All-wheel drive will be available on all trim levels.
When: Fall 2019
How Much: $48,000
Volkswagen Golf
What’s New: Volkswagen’s popular hatchback enters its eighth generation and will reportedly grow slightly in size with a few design tweaks. The sporty GTI will allegedly feature a mild hybrid powertrain featuring a 48-volt electrical system that will power the turbocharger to improve low-end boost before the exhaust pressure builds. It’s not yet clear whether the standard non-GTI Golf will return to the U.S. market.
What’s Not: The new Golf will still ride on VW’s MQB platform, though rumors suggest it’s been revised to cut weight.
When: Early 2020
How Much: $23,000 (est)
Maserati Alfieri
What’s New: The Alfieri has been designed from the ground up to be Maserati’s new halo car. It’s available as either a coupe or convertible with three levels of electrification. The EV version featuring three-motor, four-wheel drive and a quick-charging 800-volt battery will top the lineup.
What’s Not: Both the hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Alfieri will use a Ferrari-sourced engine. If that engine is a V-8, it will probably be a version of the 3.8-liter twin-turbo currently found in the Levante GTS.
When: 2020
How Much: $150,000 (est)
Porsche 718 Boxster T/718 Cayman T
What’s New: Following the widely praised “T” prescription that was given to 911 Carrera brethren, the 718 twins will similarly enjoy reduced weight, lowered and further-honed suspension, the Sport Chrono package, and Porsche Torque Vectoring. A six-speed manual is standard; a seven-speed twin-clutch automatic is optional. The 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four 718 T (likely 300 hp, 280 lb-ft) will slot into the lineup between S and GTS versions in terms of price but surely will be the pointiest 718 available.
What’s Not: Engine output for the States has not yet been finalized, but as in the base car, it’s a 2.0-liter turbo for certain. The Cayman T coupe and Boxster T roadster body lines remain the same; only subtle interior and exterior distinctions are visible.
When: 2020
How Much: $70,000 (est)
Subaru Legacy
What’s New: The Legacy moves over to Subaru’s new Global Platform, which the automaker says is safer, handles better , and maximizes interior volume. An optional 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four is now available, and the redesigned interior can be had with a large 11.6-inch touchscreen oriented vertically on the dashboard. The EyeSight package of driver assistance technology is now standard, and other driver assist features are available.
What’s Not: A 2.5-liter flat-four engine still serves as the base powertrain, but has been updated with 90 percent new parts and direct injection for the 2020 Legacy.
When: Fall 2019
How Much: $24,000 (est)
Hyundai Elantra
What’s New: After a refresh for 2019, the compact Elantra is back with more updates for 2020. The Elantra will feature a new CVT. Like its cousin, the 2019 Kia Forte, it’s likely to grow in size compared to its predecessor. Expect gains in fuel economy, with the base 2.0-liter engine hitting 41 mpg on the highway.
What’s Not: Although power figures haven’t been released, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has been confirmed once again. It’s likely the model will also continue with 1.4- and 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines.
When: Late 2019
How Much: $18,500 (est)
WHAT’S NEXT
Aston Martin Vanquish
What’s New: It’s Aston’s take on a Ferrari mid-engine supercar, specifically at the new F8 Tributo revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March. If it looks anything like the concept and revives the Vanquish name, we’ll be extremely happy. The Vanquish could pack the new V-6 hybrid turbo behind the seats, possibly making north of 700 hp to compete directly with the Tributo. We’ve heard the new model is being developed with the help of Red Bull Racing engineers, so expect the car to have a lot of F1 bits and pieces.
What’s Not: Its name. The name Vanquish has come and gone a couple of times—it was first used from 2001 to 2007 and then again from 2012 to 2018. Aston built a few special editions, but this new supercar will be completely different from anything we’ve seen with the Vanquish badge.
When: 2020
How Much: $350,000 (est)
Alfa Romeo GTV
What’s New: As Alfa’s practical coupe, the GTV will have four seats and a trunk, but that’s where the practicality ends. The front-engine, rear-drive 2+2 is expected to be offered only with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive will be optional. The high-performance Quadrifoglio model will add an electric motor between the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 and the transmission to boost output to more than 600 hp.
What’s Not: At its core, the GTV is a Giulia coupe. Expect the same turbocharged four-cylinder base engine.
When: 2021
How Much: $45,000 (est)
Audi E-Tron GT
What’s New: Audi’s sexy E-Tron GT sedan will follow the more practical E-Tron SUV to market just a year later but with substantial differences. Electric motors front and rear combine for 590 hp, fed by a 95-kW-hr battery pack with an 800-volt charging system capable of nearly filling the battery in 20 minutes. Range is expected to be similar to the E-Tron SUV’s 204 EPA-estimated miles—but less if you test the estimated 0–60 time of under 3.5 seconds or explore the 149-mph top speed.
What’s Not: Squint a bit, and you can tell it’s a nicely rebodied Porsche Taycan.
When: 2020
How Much: $75,000 (est)
Fiat Centoventi
What’s New: The entire fully modular cheap-EV concept. An underfloor battery rack can carry up to four individual 60-mile battery packs, which can be rented when needed. A fifth optional pack slides out from under the driver’s seat for convenient indoor charging. Body panels are molded in a single color with wraps providing other colors. Further personalization is provided by five choices each of roof styles and colors, bumpers, and wheels.
What’s Not: Fiat’s lifelong mission to bring mobility to the masses, which here drives further innovations like 3-D-printable accessories that mount to a mesh grid of holes in the dash.
When: 2022
How Much: $25,000 (est)
Acura RLX
What’s New: Is bolder better? Acura has tried to answer that question over the years, with mixed results. Love it or hate it, the new RDX benefits from engaging styling borrowed from the Precision concept—and that bold crossover is setting sales records for the brand. That momentum could continue with the RLX’s replacement, a car that may adopt the Precision’s fastback shape (hello, Audi A7). With very little brand equity in the RL or RLX name, the time could be right for a (slightly) bolder flagship four-door from Acura.
What’s Not: Future Acura cabins will be influenced by the Precision Interior concept, like the RDX with its optimally placed infotainment screen and controversial touchpad controller.
When: 2021
How Much: $57,000 (est)
Karma Pininfarina GT Concept
What’s New: The Pininfarina-designed Karma concept car made its debut at the 2019 Shanghai auto show and previews the California-based automaker’s upcoming lineup. Its design language will be a departure from the Revero, but most of the fundamental engineering is unchanged. If public response goes well, the Pininfarina GT could go from one-off concept to production model.
What’s Not: Karma recently announced a partnership with BMW and will license the German automaker’s turbocharged three-cylinder engine for use as a generator in plug-in hybrid vehicles, including the next-generation Revero.
When: 2020
How Much: $100,000 (est)
