Et puis, après ?
Le 22 avril 2020
Bon, nous en sommes rendus à plus d’un mois en confinement. La dernière voiture de presse que j’ai eue fut une Hyundai Venue et je l’ai rapportée le 23 mars. À ce moment-là, je devais ramasser une Genesis G90 mais vu que le confinement allait limiter nos déplacements, je l’ai tout simplement laissée là d’où elle venait. Déjà, quelques constructeurs avaient décidé de ne plus prêter de véhicules d’évaluation. Le lendemain, le couperet tombait et tous les constructeurs, à un ou deux participants près, demandaient de retourner leurs véhicules.
Il est évident qu’après plus de 35 ans à se fier à ces véhicules pour mes déplacements et surtout mon travail, j’allais devoir trouver une autre solution pour demeurer actif dans le domaine. Loin de moi l’idée de brandir ma carte de membre de l’AJAC pour passer outre les barrages policiers comme l’un de mes jeunes confrères se vante d’avoir fait, j’ai préféré demeurer à la maison et essayer d’utiliser toutes les ressources à ma disposition pour continuer d’informer et divertir mes amis amateurs de voitures de tout genre et gabarit. En même temps, je trouvais plus approprié de participer à l’effort collectif en plus de me protéger, même si je me considère en bonne santé.
Évidemment, j’ai toute une panoplie de livres à lire, de films et documents à regarder (deux sujets que je pourrais exploiter dans un avenir plus ou moins rapproché), de modèles réduits à construire (un autre sujet?), de bricolage à faire…Avec le confinement, je ne crois pas avoir couvert plus de 40 kilomètres avec ma propre Jeep et je me demande si j’en aurais fait plus avec des autos de presse. Et puis, pour aller en quelque part, on ne peut se rendre bien loin avec les barrages…
Un autre problème pointe à l’horizon. Comment se comportera l’industrie automobile après le confinement? Au moment d’écrire ces lignes, la vente des autos ont chuté de plus de 25 à 30 % dans le monde (et plus encore à certains endroits). Ensuite, la plupart des constructeurs ont fermé leurs usines ou sont aux prises avec des fournisseurs dont les usines sont fermées (incluant les manufacturiers de pneus!).
Supposons que le confinement se termine dans deux ou trois semaines, combien de temps faudra-t-il avant que le marché de la vente automobile reprenne de la vitesse. Il y aura toujours une certaine crainte des consommateurs de visiter les salles d’exposition et de devoir faire affaire avec un être humaine de près. Puis, comment seront les finances des consommateurs? Les constructeurs qui, en Amérique du Nord, ont connu des records de vente année après année (plus de 17 millions l’année dernière aux États-Unis et pas loin de deux millions au Canada) ne revivront certes plus cela avant un bon bout de temps. Ils devront réduire leur production et éliminer les modèles les moins populaires (lire les moins vendus) comme Nissan s’apprêtait à le faire (le constructeur japonais commençait à vivre des difficultés financières avant le confinement et son nouveau président avait soumis cette hypothèse en début d’année). Personnellement, je m’attends à ce que les constructeurs poussent plus les véhicules déjà en demande comme les camionnettes et les plus petits VUS en laissant de côté des grandes nouveautés dont on ne connaît pas le potentiel.
Tout dernièrement, je vous parlais du Ford Bronco à venir et du plus petit Bronco Sport. Ford estime vouloir les dévoiler et les mettre sur le marché dans un délai plutôt court, ce qui est tout à l’honneur du constructeur. Toutefois, je ne m’attends pas à conduire ce véhicule avant plusieurs mois. Ford va plutôt chercher à convaincre des journalistes de publication de très grande diffusion à mettre la main sur ces véhicules le plus rapidement possible afin de diffuser la nouvelle au plus vite en masse. Mais si le confinement se prolonge, combien en restera-t-il au poste, de ces journalistes, si l’organisation pour laquelle ils travaillent n’aura pas déclaré forfait?
Le plus ironique, c’est que Ford est demeuré très actif au niveau des informations. Mais outre le Bronco, il n’y a pas d’autres grandes nouvelles à l’horizon. Curieusement, alors que le constructeur a annoncé qu’il ne voulait plus construire d’autos conventionnelles, les ventes de la grande berline Fusion se placent en huitième position au Canada durant les trois premiers mois de l’année battant même celles de la Toyota Camry (2376 ventes contre 2307 selon Automotive News Canada)! Les seules autres nouvelles nous viennent du segment des camionnettes!  
Du côté de chez GM, tout récemment, les nouvelles étaient concentrées autour de la marque Cadillac surtout avec des versions de performance (sport) des plus petites berlines CT4 et CT5 récemment lancées. Présentement, il est aussi question de la Cadillac électrique à venir (la Lyriq)…Ah oui, il y a également la Corvette mais cette superbe auto fait partie d’un créneau tellement limité que ce ne seront certes pas les Corvette qui sauveront la compagnie. Il en va un peu de même chez FCA qui devrait célébrer sa nouvelle alliance avec PSA (Peugeot) mais qui se contente de nous lancer des versions améliorées (ou réchauffées) de Jeep Wrangler (on attend toujours une Grand Cherokee redessin��e) et de Ram, ses deux véritables «vaches à lait»). Chez nos amis européens, sauf pour les plus petites Volkswagen (dont une version électrique), on est plus timide. Audi nous proposera peut-être un plus grand VUS tout comme BMW mais encore une fois, on est prudent. On marche sur des œufs en attendant la fin du confinement…ou une deuxième vague du virus (la plus grande crainte actuelle). Même son de cloche chez les constructeurs asiatiques sauf pour Hyundai qui aura une version N à boîte manuelle à huit rapports de sa sportive Veloster (pas de nouvelles de son pick-up) et Lexus qui lance un coupé de luxe qui tombe, lui aussi, dans un créneau très restreint. Quant au nouveau Kia Seltos, il ne faut pas se leurrer : il ne s’agit que d’un Hyundai Venue avec un plus long empattement! Mais, admettons-le, au prix suggéré, ce pourrait être un succès.

Certains me feront remarquer qu’il y a beaucoup d’autres nouvelles mais j’ai bien vu dans mes informations régulières, qu’il n’y a pas beaucoup de véritables grandes nouveautés à l’horizon. Qui plus est, ce sont toujours les camionnettes qui dominent notre marché, même au Canada. D’ailleurs, les chiffres publiés dans Automotive News Canada le confirment pour le premier trimestre de l’année. Voyez ce que ça donne :

Comme on le voit, les camionnettes pick-up ont encore le haut du pavé. Qui plus est, avec la chute des prix du pétrole, ce n’est pas le spectre de la consommation qui va diminuer l’intérêt des consommateurs pour ces «gros» véhicules. Ce qui pourrait retarder l’arrivée de nouvelles autos électriques…
On ne peut prédire quand ce confinement se terminera ni comment les gens y réagiront. L’économie reviendra-t-elle comme avant? Permettez-moi d’en douter! Il nous faudra des mois, voire des années avant que la situation se règle si elle règle comme on le croit.
J’espère que le tout se replacera rapidement. J’aime trop rouler pour m’en priver et, de plus, j’adore écrire des commentaires sur les nouvelles autos…si de nouvelles autos nous arrivent au cours des prochains mois…(soupir).
Enfin, il y a la question des courses d’automobiles dont je suis un fan irréductible. Il y a trop de nouvelles de pistes qui ferment pour y ajouter la possibilité que la saison 2020 soit complètement annulée à cause de ce satané virus…Et que dire des expositions de voitures anciennes ou des rencontres de hot-rod…Misère…
Des idées pour le Ram
Il y a eu, aux États-Unis, un concours lancé par FCA invitant les amateurs de voitures à «créer» une nouvelle version futuriste des camionnettes. Le magazine hebdomadaire Automotive News en a publié deux «gagnants», l’un choisi par notre designer préféré, le directeur de FCA à ce niveau, Ralph Gilles, ce charmant Haïtien d’origine ayant vécu sa jeunesse à Montréal et l’autre par un de ses confrères Mark Trostle, chef du design chez Dodge et SRT. Le premier est une vision futuriste d’un Ram électrique alors que le deuxième est un Ram conçu autour du thème de la Dodge Challenger…

D’autres difficultés…
En plus de la baisse des ventes dues à la pandémie, plusieurs constructeurs doivent maintenant affronter une pénurie possible de boîtiers de transfert. En effet, le fournisseur qui les produit, Borg-Warner, a vu son usine principale de production de boîtiers de Seneca en Caroline du Sud fortement endommagée par une tornade. Et ces boîtiers étaient destinés à Toyota (Tundra), Ford (F-150, Super Duty, Expedition, Explorer, Transit, Lincoln Navigator et Aviator) et FCA (Ram)…

Lançado em 2007, o Honda Civic Si entrou imediatamente para o rol dos melhores esportivos nacionais. Boa parte desse prestígio se deve aos seus atributos mecânicos, com especificações exclusivas de motor, câmbio, suspensão e freios, que garantem muito prazer ao volante.
Destaque para o motor K20 de 2 litros com duplo comando de válvulas, que resultam em 192 cv a 7.800 rpm e 19,2 mkgf a 6.100 rpm. Mas o sistema de variação de válvulas i-VTEC atinge 18 mkgf a apenas 2.500 rpm, favorecendo a dirigibilidade e o consumo de 8 km/l na cidade e 13,1 na estrada.
O câmbio de seis marchas e o peso/potência de apenas 6,8 kg/cv garantem o 0 a 100 km/h em 7,9 s e a máxima declarada de 232 km/h. Mas esqueça os números: bom mesmo é sentir o coice do i-VTEC pouco antes dos 6.000 rpm e o ronco acima dos 8.000 rpm.
A estabilidade é favorecida pelo diferencial autoblocante, e o comportamento dinâmico é neutro com tendência ao sobresterço, com intrusão mínima do controle de estabilidade e tração, que pode ser desligado. Os freios são muito eficientes e a suspensão firme não sacrifica o conforto.
Sua decoração externa exibe uma agressividade discreta, com pintura vermelha, preta ou prata. O aerofólio traseiro está sempre presente, bem como as exclusivas rodas de 17 polegadas com pneus 215/45, a ponteira de escape cromada e a elegante inscrição “i-VTEC” nas laterais.
O interior segue o mesmo padrão, com bancos esportivos revestidos de tecido preto, pedais de alumínio, volante multifuncional de couro, painel de instrumentos com iluminação vermelha e shift-light ao lado do velocímetro, para indicar o melhor momento para a troca das marchas.

Não é fácil encontrar um Si abaixo dos 100.000 km. A enorme tolerância do modelo ajuda a suportar abusos nas ruas, estradas e autódromos, mas é preciso critério na avaliação antes de fechar negócio.
“Além de ter peças caras, o motor K20 exige cuidados específicos: uma retífica de cabeçote bem feita não sai por menos de R$ 7.000 entre peças, fluidos e mão de obra. Uma retífica completa pode facilmente chegar aos R$ 20.000”, explica o preparador Diogo Oliveira, especialista em Honda.
Onde o bicho pega
Motor: Só funciona corretamente se o óleo estiver dentro dos padrões estipulados pela Honda. O velho truque do lubrificante de viscosidade maior para disfarçar as folgas internas não funciona nos motores K20.
Cabeçote: O acionamento das válvulas por tuchos sólidos exige verificação das folgas a cada 40.000 km: o ajuste correto tem influência direta no desempenho. Gasolina de má qualidade compromete a vedação das válvulas em razão da carbonização.

Câmbio: Pode apresentar arranhadas em trocas mais rápidas, o que costuma ser solucionado com a troca do atuador da embreagem. Em casos extremos, é preciso trocar o conjunto de anéis sincronizadores, que custa R$ 3.000, sem mão de obra.
Coxins: Vibração excessiva e trancos na partida do motor indicam que os coxins do motor chegaram ao fim de sua vida útil. O conjunto na autorizada não sai por menos de R$ 4.600 (sem mão de obra).
Direção: Há um problema crônico no embuchamento da caixa de direção, facilmente detectado em ruas com pavimentação irregular. A solução exige a troca da caixa (R$ 8.436, sem mão de obra) ou recondicionamento com buchas de bronze.
Rodas e pneus: Verifique se há sinais de maus-tratos. E não se esqueça de providenciar um jogo de pneus de boa qualidade, que começa em R$ 2.500.

今年由工會擴大舉辦的2020台北汽車大展,在南港展覽館一樓與四樓全部都包下。號稱是最大的一次。由於今年的車市不算熱絡,每年賣出的進口車已經超越國產的汽車,所以今年的汽車大展,有許多來自外國的品牌。不過,也不乏許多國內製造的他國品牌商,大家都紛紛來展示。最重要的是,這個展覽讓許多宅男藉著機會來看模特兒順便拍照,因為機會難得,除了看名車之外,看美女才是第一大享受!這就是宅男的最大嗜好!

法國車雪鐵龍,最近幾年又反土重來,但是想要搶台灣市場真的是不容易。有幾款多功能休旅車,外觀很奇特,內裝也很特殊,但是性能就有待更專業的車手專家來評判了。我這邊是以攝影、宅男的潛角度來看車展,所以不對專業的問題作分析。看看就好…。

經過哈雷機車的攤位,發現一堆人排隊… 停下來看,原來不是排隊搶著看車,而是排隊搶著跟美女拍照。穿著麻辣的模特兒,短熱褲、長靴、露肚皮,最重要的來了,雖然不是國外版的金髮女郎,而是本土派的,但是“沒魚蝦也好”,一堆宅男搶著排隊拍照!哈哈哈!
會場上還有Aston Martin為了常知的英國007的座駕。這是超跑的知名品牌之一,現場展了DBS、Vantage等一些不同的車型。最令人注目的應該是2019去年底剛出來的DBX,唯一的一台SUV。以Aston Martin這個品來來說,以前是不會做休旅車的,但是去年為了滿足市場的要求,坦白說應該是車賣不動了,只好出款SUV來搶搶生意吧… 特別出了這款SUV。不過價格應該是會貴得驚人!現場永三隔了一道大牆,大家也只能遠觀不可近玩焉,所以看看就算了… 反正也買不起吧!哈哈哈~!

Subaru 今年攤位也不小,位置也不錯。比較特別的就是現場一台電油輔助休旅車的解剝圖,可以看到內部結構與引擎構照,這對愛好汽車的朋友們是非常吸引人的展示品。

BMW 今天的車子也是很多,從1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8系列,X系列休旅車及M特調超跑系列,一應俱全。睽違已久的850i也重新上市,我記得我開過850i是在1995的時候,離現在已經是25年前了!有小孩的話都已經變大人了!所以真的等很久吧!

M5 也是我欣賞的超跑之一。因為以前我常拿它跟Porsche 911比較,雖然兩台是不一樣的車款,一個是轎跑車,一個是純跑車。一個是把一般車改成超跑,一個是把超跑改成可以當轎車天天開!所以你說,是不是都有獨特之處呢?!抱歉,因為太激動,照片對焦跑掉,真的覺得手上這台Sony a7II可以退休了…。

現場這台M5還是用平光霧漆塗裝,非常特別。但是對於比較保守的我,這樣子真的很不能接受,因為擺放年度一久,可能就會跟路邊等著報廢的車顏色差不多… 哈哈哈~!

X1 BMW最低階的休旅車,簡直就是縮小版的X5。這個車很適合疼女兒的老爸,買一台送她開,安全性沒問題。非常適合女性朋友在都市裡跑來跑去。

未來車的概念。真不知道可以開嗎?還是只是一個放大版的模型。

i 系列,是BMW另外一個電動車系列。路上已經看到有人開了,也是小巧可愛型的。但是續航力可能就要稍微注意,不能跑太遠,免得沒電。

i8,Roadster電動純超跑,這外型超酷,在不可能的任務電影中由Tom Cruise開著去趕著辦事。這印象令人深刻!未來電動車系統成熟時,可以買台來玩玩!

X7大型SUV休旅車的上市,也算是為了要爭取高階市場的重頭戲商品之一。

延續過去的大七系列,這一代的前氣霸更誇張了!顯得更霸氣了!尊貴更上一層樓!

Formula E 電動方程式賽車擺在現場,平常只能看體育台的比賽,現在像廠有一台。

Volvo 擺了一個自行車架,這個最令我感興趣。設計非常不錯。但是如果路邊停車就可能要注意了,因為後面停車的話,那就GG了。

Volkswagen 德國國民車大廠,擺了許多吸引一般消費者群的車款。以進口車來說,這個品牌推的都是便宜又大碗,對日本車是很大的威脅。

我高中時代的最愛之一,Golf GTI! 革新版的樣子很可愛!等我退休的那一天,再買來玩一玩。

休旅車一直是VW的強項,尤其是那正正方方的T系列,有著複雜的型號,永遠搞不懂是那一種,就像是N胞胎一樣,到底誰是哥哥弟弟。

現在講求戶外旅遊,所以露營車市場需求不小,能夠在一定空間裝夠多的東西,才會是市場的強盛軍。VW的T型箱型車正是如此。我了解的California,Beach正是這樣的需求。

Caddy 系列是另一款可以拿來隨意發揮的車款。在英國,通常是拿來做為共公單位的維修車輛,所以可以見得它的耐操性很夠。

KIA 在一個角落不是很起眼的攤位上,沒有亮眼的模特兒,也沒有超炫的車款,所以逛的人比現場工作人員還少… 不過它的人貨車倒是有趣。雖然現場把一台改成露營車,後面還很創意的擺了一個家用熱水器,但是粗糙的程度可以讓人覺得有如好萊塢2012災難電影,逃難般的裝備,出去玩會讓朋友傻眼吧…。

Suzuki 高中時代的幻想座騎之一。尤其它的忍者系列,30多年後還保持它的特色,很不簡單。雖然它也有擺汽車,但是我認為他們機場做的比汽車好太多了。

它們還有商務車,看起來也可以有多樣性的發展。這就是這家公司聰明的地方,不需要跟人家去搶市場,直接找專業市場下手更有機會!

McLaren 是以前很喜歡的英國品牌之一,但是自從它在F1表現一路下滑之下,加上型款變化太大,就有如沒追連續劇後再看,完全不知道在播什麼。這牌子現在對我來說就是如此。

Bentley 這個可以給有錢人喜歡自己開車的人達到目地的品牌。沒有什麼可以聊的,因為也是被代理商隔離遙遠,比在路邊看車還不如。反正這車口袋不夠深的人就不用考慮,因為光踩油門加速就可能把50cc機車加油的預算花光了。

Peugeot 法國車很久以前就跟義大利車一樣被打趴逃離台灣市場了,這幾年又來台灣試水溫,應該有如泡冷泉般吧!

Toyota 日本平民轎車。我只看它的商務車,因為好用耐操,品質又很好。只不過好不容易在1992年的Previa子彈型款式大賣,相隔20年後新款樣式更受歡迎,這幾年不知道是機械人卡通看太多,搞了一台像Alphard這樣方方正正的車款,現在又多了一款Granvia更方正!畢竟它不是VW,不要想要老是學人好嗎!?就像另一款北美大賣的Sienna,那樣不是很棒嗎?可惜很多人嫌太長,台灣停車不好��,所以才打消念頭繼續發展吧…。

另外展出了一些很科幻的未來車,看了有點奇怪,但是滿有趣的。

Toyota 別的不說,因為路上都看得到。現場有擺了一台競賽版的Surpra! 也有市售版睽違已久的Supra終於有新版,這是讓愛好Toyota Supra的愛車人士一大佳音!

Audi 推出的新款車也不少,但是卻少看到Q7等大型車,隨然也是一樣有A8,但是可以看得出不是主力車款,而是把重點放在小型車款給年青族群的消費市場上。

Nissan 這個老字號的日本品牌。以前高中時代也很喜愛的300ZX車款,在30年後的今日升級成370Z了!但是目前受歡迎的層度不比從前了,也許這個跟車市活絡有很大的相關吧!

Lexus 這個是Toyota的高級品牌,所以也看得出朝著電動車的方向發展。它們的電動休旅車,與第一次看到推出的商務車。

這商務車高級的內裝,裡頭還有大型液晶螢幕,讓後座享受無限的尊貴,不管行動客廳也好,行動辦公室也可以,就是讓乘坐者坐起來很尊貴就對了!

Mercedes-Benz 今年擺的車也是有夠多的!加上弄了一個號稱科技的專屬市民證,讓一般民眾可以註冊當場領取礦泉水或過關領取其他獎項。但是光註冊這個東西就搞了半天,所以還得要看你用什麼手幾來讓過程簡單些。不過倒也是增加他們客戶名單的好辦法。

EQ 電動車也是今年賓士的重點。現場擺了一台未來的概念車。

EQC 將是賓士真正要上市的車款。純電動車的規格,所以未來將不只有Tesla有電動車了,Mercedes也有大型電動車了喔!

有許多車廠都有僱用美麗大方的模特兒,每一位都有可愛的的笑容。她們穿著窄裙及高跟鞋然後站整天,非常辛苦。況且還得時時刻刻得要笑臉迎人。真是替她們的專業感到佩服。

Porsche 今年的攤位也不小。現場也有一台Formula E 賽車,且也展出一款純電動車 Taycan,這款貴得不得了的電動車,外觀像Panamera,馬力性能等方面都是頂級,所以想要擁有它,口袋的深度是一定要夠的!

Honda 另一個日本老品牌,這幾年被Toyota搶走了不少市場。雖然我大學的第一台車是Honda,但是這幾年的表現真的是遠遠不及對手的表現。雖然我出社會後都改買歐洲車,但是我還是很喜歡他們設計的 NSX這個經典車款。革新後的版本,看起來有它的帥氣在,加油囉!

另一台高中時代的最愛機車之一,CBR! 現在看起來還是很帥!既使我現在開車開習慣了,叫我再回去騎重車,說真的,完全無意願。偶而借借分享電動機車短程跑跑還可以,但是要我用機車飆風,算了吧!老骨頭了,腰會散掉~!

展場許多模特兒,但是每當想要拍她們的時候都會有罪惡感,因為總覺得自己是來看車子的,不想淪落跟低俗的一般宅男一樣,只看美女。但是,如果我們以這些美美的模特兒角度來看,如果沒有人看她們,那她們是不是會很難過呢!她們也是人,也需要大家的鼓勵與讚賞的!所以我們還是給他們鼓勵吧!我就拍一些美美的照片給大家一起欣賞!

有時候看到這樣的模特兒穿著真的替他們留冷汗,因為很怕她們一不小心穿幫!我也很怕自己拍到穿幫鏡頭,因為這樣照片就不能登了,我也只能把照片私藏起來了!這樣沒有成就感…>O<。

我認為模特兒最好以後還是穿著絲襪比較好,因為不穿襪子,腿部的青筋都爆出來了,有時看了都會覺得腳怪怪的,尤其她們踩高跟鞋那麼長的時間,腿部線條的修飾對美學會有很大的幫助。

2019’s Top Rides: Part 2

With 2020 quickly approaching I decided to take a look back at a few of my most memorable rides this year. Happily there were a few surprises along the way, vehicles that I thought would be mediocre at best, turned out to be hidden jewels. Here’s part two of three that will follow in the weeks to come.
Hyundai Elantra: An Affordable Class Act
Hyundai’s Elantra is one of those cars that blends unnoticed into the automotive landscape - until now. Redesigned a couple of years back, for 2019 the Elantra gets a sexy mid-cycle makeover.  From the windshield forward the car is all new while a new trunk lid, taillights and bumper freshen up the back.  Thankfully Hyundai isn’t following the competitions’ boy racer look, opting instead for a rich, sophisticated demeanor that doesn’t alienate its youth market.  I had more than a fair share of twenty something’s giving me the thumbs up.

That classy design follows into the greenhouse with clean flowing lines and some welcome upgrades/revisions to the climate and stereo controls and moving to white on black gauges. Regardless of trim, a six-way power driver’s seat and a height adjustable passenger seat are standard. They’re firm and comfortable with great support and I preferred them to the pricier GT version of the 5-door hatchback I had a few weeks later.

Prices start reasonably enough at $17,099 for the base Essential trim line (who comes up with these names and who would brag about having the Essential model?) The Essential offers such essential items (I had to) as heated front seats, Bluetooth, 6-speed manual and a rear view camera. My car had the optional ($1700) automatic with hill start assist, which is available only on the automatic – (why on an automatic?). From there the option/trim levels grow to peak at $27,549 for the Ultimate trim line at which point you can lock/unlock/start your car with your cell phone thanks to Hyundai’s Bluelink. Forward collision avoidance, lane departure, lane keep assist, blind spot warning with lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert are also included, and if an inch makes a difference you get an 8” screen over the other trims’ seven inch unit.

Three driving modes allow you to select shift point, steering wheel and throttle controls to suit your tastes and needs.  Sport mode makes the most out of the 2.0L four cylinder’s 147 horses and 132 lb-ft. of torque bringing acceptable fun to your driving experience but speed demons may want to opt for the GT N Line or Sport trims where a 1.6L turbocharged inline four punches out 201 horses and 195 lb-ft of torque, but that’s another story – stay tuned. Oh and to add to the confusion there’s also a 162 horsepower version of the 2.0L in the GT trim. But if you’re into fuel economy, the base car will impress, I managed to get 5.9-l/100 km with mostly highway excursions.

 Compared head to head with its two closest competitors, the Civic and Corolla the Elantra is a no brainer, delivering better fuel economy, better head room, better rear seat hip room (yes there’s room for two adults back there), as well as offering a slew of items as standard equipment that you’d pay extra for or simply are not available on the other two like a heated steering wheel.  On top of which the Hyundai’s ultra-high-strength steel structure gives it a quieter ride.

So if you’re looking for a handsome family sedan that can haul four adults in comfort and not eat up the family budget, hop on down to your Hyundai dealer.
Volkswagen Golf GTI Rabbit: Return of the Rascally Rabbit
First there was the Mini Cooper, then the Honda CVCC, and then Volkswagen unleashed the Rabbit GTI changing forever the persona of the front-wheel drive sedan. The GTI made German handling and performance affordable, suddenly you didn’t need to go to the Bimmer dealership for some Teutonic giddy up and go.  It also changed Volkswagen’s image overnight.
Forty plus years later the GTI is still the hot hatch to beat, perfectly balancing comfort, performance and style.

This year VW resurrected the Rabbit name as an added trim model to the Golf GTI line. If you’re confused, don’t be there are three trim levels available to the GTI buyer; the base GTI starts at a very reasonable $30,845 and comes with 17” wheels and a 6-speed manual transmission, the Rabbit edition, aside from a cooler color pallet, adds Dynamic Chassis Control, push start button, an 8 speaker Fender sound system, LED headlights with adaptive front lights, with the Rabbit logo embroider on the Clark Cloth bucket seat backs. The Rabbit also gets 7.5” x 18” black alloy wheels, all for $33,995. Next up the corporate ladder is the Autobahn edition at $36,145. For the extra two + grand you get satellite navigation, Sirius XM sat radio, a panoramic sunroof, manual height adjustment on the comfortable, supportive buckets and power lumbar support.  The 7-speed DSG automatic is a $1,400 option across the board and unfortunately my left foot was sent to the rest home as my Cornflower Blue (yes that’s the real name) tester arrived in the form of an automatic with Tiptronic paddle shifters.

Regardless of trim, the GTI feeds 228 horses to the front wheels through a turbo charged, direct injected, 2.0L TSI inline four cylinder, by comparison non GTI Golfs leave the factory with a 147 horse, 1.4L TSI engine. VW philes will notice an 8 horsepower bump from last year’s GTI thanks to some factory tuning.  In addition all GTIs get a limited slip differential, allowing you to get better traction and control on the twisties by delivering power to the outside front wheel. Enthusiasts will also be pleased to learn that VW has retained a manual, non-electronic hand brake.

No heated steering wheel.
In short the Rabbit carries all the right stuff. Power delivery is smooth with just an ever so slight hint of turbo lag. If there is a fault, it lies when down shifting with the paddles, as the automatic is slower than I’d like. The adaptive dampening suspension, coupled with the limited slip diff takes an already perfect daily driver and bumps it up several notches on the fun factor. 
My Rabbit came optioned with the $1,750 Driver Assistance Plus package (autonomous e-braking with pedestrian monitoring, blind spot detection, rear traffic alert, lane assist and adaptive cruise)

In the cockpit GTI’s personality differs from plane Jane Golfs with the red ambient lighting and illuminated doorsills. Aluminum pedals, a flat-bottomed steering wheel welcome you to take charge. The instrument cluster is specific to the GTI also. In true German fashion, premium materials and soft-touch plastics are found throughout. Headroom, legroom front and aft is excellent. While all controls are easy to read and manipulate, sadly living in these northern climes a heated steering wheel is missing from the equation.

The Golf has always offered a degree of sophisticated road mannerism not found in any comparably priced sedan and for that matter in few pricier sedans, the GTI takes that formula up a notch while the Rabbit trim offers all the amenities a performance sedan needs. It may be an overused cliché, but the GTI is a true driver’s car. Now if they would only give me a press car with a standard tranny!

Buick Encore: Luxury comes in a small package
I almost totaled the Encore within two minutes of getting behind its wheel. It would have been entirely my fault but quick reflexes and maybe an angel or two, prevented me from a lengthy explanation to my GM rep. I had just surrendered the Rabbit GTI back to the good folks at Volkswagen and jumped into the Buick to head back home when I approached the highway on ramp a little too eagerly thinking I was still in the Rabbit. Well it got squirrelly pretty quick and I was reminded just as fast that I was no longer in a road hugging sedan but a tall, skinny crossover that shared nearly as much road room as the Rabbit.

Now in its seventh year the Encore got a minor facelift a couple of years back, with the most noticeable difference being the waterfall grill that paid homage to ‘50s era Roadmaster. It worked on the larger than life land yacht but did little for the diminutive crossover. The new look takes away from the dorky toy look and gives it a refined appearance. With more and more manufacturers getting into the lucrative compact crossover segment and the Encore’s sales showing no signs of slowing, Buick is doing something right.

Although the Encore is the smallest vehicle in Buick’s lineup, it packs a lot of punch. Three trim levels make up the line starting at $26,400 for the front drive Preferred model that comes with a 138 horsepower, 1.4L DOHC turbocharged inline four. The standard goodie bag consists of Bluetooth connectivity, OnStar, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, a rear vision camera, sat radio, electronic stability control with traction control and steering wheel mounted controls on a leather steering wheel.

The $28, 400 Sport Touring rendition gets remote start, a rear spoiler, fancier 18” wheels and fog lamps but opens you up to a slew of options that are not available on the base model including a 153 horse 1.4L SIDI turbocharged four with Stop/Start technology.
My tester, the top-of-the-line Essence trim starts at $33,700 and adds all-wheel drive, heated front buckets, remote start, blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, 6-way power driver’s seat, dual climate zone controls, heated steering wheel. It also came with the optional, aforementioned, Direct Injection 153 horse, 177 ft-lb of torque, four. Both mills feed the wheels through a seamless 6-speed transmission.

Yes at 33 grand the little Buick gets pricey considering its size, but not everyone needs or wants a larger vehicle, so for all the bells and whistles, the Encore’s price gets justifiable.
What makes the Encore a winner in the subcompact crossover segment is its silky ride, a trait worthy of the Buick name and even after my initial kerfuffle, its handling can best be described as nimble – just as long as you remember what you are driving and not driving.

Inside you’ll find an interior that’s tastefully done with great fit and finish, the controls are easy to read and use. There’s plenty of storage bins about for all your travel needs. The seats are comfortable with plenty of headroom, as you’d expect from the tall design. Two burly adults will probably find shoulder and hip room on the tight side and despite Buick’s claim of it being a 5-passenger…well if the three in the back are kids. There’s 18.8 cu.ft. of cargo room behind the rear seats and 48.4 cubes with the rear seats folded. Folding the back seats however means moving the front seats up, diminishing legroom and still not getting a flat floor. In its favor is that the cargo bay is taller than most other compacts.

If you’re looking for a ride that offers ease of entry, a low lift over for the cargo bay while offering an above average ride and small enough to negotiate urban centers’ shrinking streets the Encore is sure to please, all while being a miser at the gas pump.

Picape média da Peugeot é flagrada sem camuflagem
A Peugeot é a próxima a entrar no mercado de picapes médias e seu primeiro modelo foi flagrado rodando sem camuflagem no Chile. O site Argentina Autoblog conseguiu imagens da picape usando apenas uma cobertura sobre os logos na grade e na traseira.
O modelo será revelado oficialmente em março de 2020. Sua missão não será nada fácil: brigar com a Toyota Hilux, Chevrolet S10 e Ford Ranger. No Brasil, o modelo chegará às ruas em 2021 e terá no continente sul americano seu principal mercado.
A base da picape será a chinesa Changan Kaicene F70, que é parceira do grupo PSA no gigante asiático. A versão chinesa tem 5,33 metros de comprimento, número próximo ao da Ranger e é ligeiramente maior que a Hilux, líder do Segmento.

Motorização da nova picape
Uma das apostas para o trem de força é o motor 2.0 turbodiesel de 180 cv associado a uma transmissão automática e tração traseira, com 4×4 com reduzida ativado por seletor, como nas demais rivais. Se confirmar a motorização, a Peugeot será o modelo menos potente da categoria, já que hoje todas trabalham na casa dos 200 cv, a exceção da Nissan Frontier, que tem 190 cv.

Guia de Usados: Honda Civic SI tem receita perfeita para fãs de esportivos

Lançado em 2007, o Honda Civic Si entrou imediatamente para o rol dos melhores esportivos nacionais. Boa parte desse prestígio se deve aos seus atributos mecânicos, com especificações exclusivas de motor, câmbio, suspensão e freios, que garantem muito prazer ao volante.
Destaque para o motor K20 de 2 litros com duplo comando de válvulas, que resultam em 192 cv a 7.800 rpm e 19,2 mkgf a 6.100 rpm. Mas o sistema de variação de válvulas i-VTEC atinge 18 mkgf a apenas 2.500 rpm, favorecendo a dirigibilidade e o consumo de 8 km/l na cidade e 13,1 na estrada.
O câmbio de seis marchas e o peso/potência de apenas 6,8 kg/cv garantem o 0 a 100 km/h em 7,9 s e a máxima declarada de 232 km/h. Mas esqueça os números: bom mesmo é sentir o coice do i-VTEC pouco antes dos 6.000 rpm e o ronco acima dos 8.000 rpm.
A estabilidade é favorecida pelo diferencial autoblocante, e o comportamento dinâmico é neutro com tendência ao sobresterço, com intrusão mínima do controle de estabilidade e tração, que pode ser desligado. Os freios são muito eficientes e a suspensão firme não sacrifica o conforto.
Sua decoração externa exibe uma agressividade discreta, com pintura vermelha, preta ou prata. O aerofólio traseiro está sempre presente, bem como as exclusivas rodas de 17 polegadas com pneus 215/45, a ponteira de escape cromada e a elegante inscrição “i-VTEC” nas laterais.
O interior segue o mesmo padrão, com bancos esportivos revestidos de tecido preto, pedais de alumínio, volante multifuncional de couro, painel de instrumentos com iluminação vermelha e shift-light ao lado do velocímetro, para indicar o melhor momento para a troca das marchas.

Mas nem tudo são flores: pela idade do projeto, pode esquecer a conectividade, pois nunca houve oferta de central multimídia. Outro defeito grave da oitava geração é o espaço do porta-malas, limitado a irrisórios 340 litros (insuficiente para uma família com dois filhos).
O mercado costuma valorizar mais os modelos 2009 em diante, já com o leve retoque de estilo na dianteira e oferta de airbags laterais. Mas o mais importante é a procedência: trata-se de um esportivo que deixou de ser feito há quase dez anos.
Não é fácil encontrar um Si abaixo dos 100.000 km. A enorme tolerância do modelo ajuda a suportar abusos nas ruas, estradas e autódromos, mas é preciso critério na avaliação antes de fechar negócio.
“Além de ter peças caras, o motor K20 exige cuidados específicos: uma retífica de cabeçote bem feita não sai por menos de R$ 7.000 entre peças, fluidos e mão de obra. Uma retífica completa pode facilmente chegar aos R$ 20.000”, explica o preparador Diogo Oliveira, especialista em Honda.
Onde o bicho pega
Motor: Só funciona corretamente se o óleo estiver dentro dos padrões estipulados pela Honda. O velho truque do lubrificante de viscosidade maior para disfarçar as folgas internas não funciona nos motores K20.
Cabeçote: O acionamento das válvulas por tuchos sólidos exige verificação das folgas a cada 40.000 km: o ajuste correto tem influência direta no desempenho. Gasolina de má qualidade compromete a vedação das válvulas em razão da carbonização.

Câmbio: Pode apresentar arranhadas em trocas mais rápidas, o que costuma ser solucionado com a troca do atuador da embreagem. Em casos extremos, é preciso trocar o conjunto de anéis sincronizadores, que custa R$ 3.000, sem mão de obra.
Coxins: Vibração excessiva e trancos na partida do motor indicam que os coxins do motor chegaram ao fim de sua vida útil. O conjunto na autorizada não sai por menos de R$ 4.600 (sem mão de obra).
Direção: Há um problema crônico no embuchamento da caixa de direção, facilmente detectado em ruas com pavimentação irregular. A solução exige a troca da caixa (R$ 8.436, sem mão de obra) ou recondicionamento com buchas de bronze.
Rodas e pneus: Verifique se há sinais de maus-tratos. E não se esqueça de providenciar um jogo de pneus de boa qualidade, que começa em R$ 2.500.

2020 Volkswagen Golf First Look
In 1974, Volkswagen introduced its follow-up to the original people’s car, the classic Mk 1 Golf. Forty-five years and seven major redesigns later, the eighth-generation 2020 Volkswagen Golf has arrived to continue the nameplate’s legacy and presumably get it to its fifth decade.
So far, it hasn’t been confirmed if the standard Golf 8 will make its way to the North American market. Volkswagen says the decision to bring it to North America is still “under consideration,” but GTI and Golf R models have been confirmed—no word on when they will make their debut, however. Whether they bring it to the U.S. or not, Volkswagen is still going to sell plenty of Golfs—it’s the brand’s best-selling car in Europe and an extremely important car for VW globally. Hoping to keep that streak going, Volkswagen has updated the Mk 8 from the ground up, starting with the newest iteration of the MQB platform. Globally, the new Golf will feature eight drivetrains, a range of advanced safety tech, and a futuristic car-to-car communication system VW is calling “Car2X.”
The Golf still keeps its hatchback profile, but the Mk 8 will only be available globally as a four-door car, which should be fine for Americans as the two-door body style left our market in 2016. The more angular lines of the Mk 7 have been softened in most places, the front bumper is more sculpted than before, and there is a stronger through line that flows along the side of the car, bisects the door handles, and bleeds into the taillights. LED headlights and taillights are now standard across the Golf range. The new Golf also adopts VW’s subtly redesigned logo and new badging for the Golf model designation, now in all capital letters, sits just below the VW emblem on the back. That rear VW badge will no doubt still double as the release handle for the hatch.
Volkswagen calls this the most progressive Golf ever, and the changes inside are more drastic than on the outside. A new three-spoke multi-function steering wheel rests behind a standard 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit instrument cluster, and toward the middle of the car sits a standard 8.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display that is angled slightly toward the driver. A 10.0-inch infotainment screen is optional, and a widescreen head-up-display is also available. The climate controls lay hidden just beneath the infotainment cluster. The center console itself apes what we’ve seen in the new 911 with a stubby-looking electronic gear lever flanked by a series of buttons for other functions like auto brake hold. Gone is the parking brake handle, replaced by an electronic switch.
For the first time, the Golf will offer a total of eight powertrain options, five of which are hybridized. The new range of powertrains runs the gamut from gas-powered to plug-in hybrid, with diesel, natural gas, and mild hybrid options also joining the mix. The two gas and two diesel units are all turbocharged and feature direct fuel injection. The diesel engines, which the U.S. will almost certainly not get whether VW brings the Golf stateside or not, are said to be 17 percent more efficient. Volkswagen also says they’ve doubled AdBlue injections to “significantly cut nitrogen oxide emissions.” But then VW says a lot of things about its diesels.
The new Golf will also be the first Volkswagen to feature mild-hybridization. The eTSI engines will pair a three-cylinder motor to a 48-volt electrical system and will have horsepower outputs ranging from 150 to 200 hp. The most powerful engine in the Golf range will have 296 hp, though no word on which model that engine belongs to. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly to those passionate about driving fun, Volkswagen has spent the money to develop a new six-speed manual gearbox for front-wheel-drive Golfs, and it comes standard on the gas-powered cars. The GTI, TCR, and Golf R models will all use a 2.0-liter TSI mill, but each with different power outputs.
The Mk 8 also gets a host of new safety features from VW. The new Golf comes standard with lane-keep assist, a new turn-off assist feature, frontal area monitoring system, and a new prediction system to help mitigate collisions with pedestrians. Volkswagen is also debuting what it’s calling “Car2X,” or the first car-to-car communication system in a VW. The Golf will be able to transmit and receive relevant traffic information to and from other vehicles in real time within a radius of up to just over 2,400 feet. The Golf will be able to recognize situations like accidents, broken down vehicles, tail ends of traffic jams, roadwork areas, emergency braking situations, and emergency service vehicles and relay that information to the cars around it.
Higher-end Golfs will also feature VW’s dynamic chassis control, and niceties like LED matrix headlights and adaptive cruise control. The new Golf will come in three trims, standard, Life, and Style, and each step up comes with a comprehensive bump in features. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but then we’re still waiting to see if VW is bringing the Golf to the ‘States at all.
Sigh. At least we get the GTI.
