Cars Renault will launch in South Africa in 2020

Renault South Africa will be launching several new models later this year despite severe delays in production due to the coronavirus pandemic. The refreshed line-up of new cars for the local market includes an ultra-sporty Megane RS model as well as enhanced crossovers and SUVs.

Over the past five years, Renault South Africa has increased its share of the local new car market thanks to the introduction of the popular Kwid. Its Sandero range has also helped the French brand grow at the entry-level end of the market. Speaking at the launch of the refreshed Kwid compact car in Johannesburg late last year, Renault South Africa's marketing and communications vice president Jesus Boveda confirmed that the company was fifth-largest in SA in terms of new vehicle sales, with aspirations to climb a few rungs higher on the ladder.

Looking to pick fights with the recently facelifted Honda Civic Type R (we're awaiting confirmation that it's still coming in 2020) and the recently introduced Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR, the new Renault Megane Trophy will add some excitement to the performance hatch market.

Renault confirmed earlier this week that the 221kW hot hatch will feature breakthrough exhaust system technologies, bi-material brakes, a Torsen limited-slip differential and, most importantly, a firmer chassis for more precise control and handling.

The previous generation Megane RS Trophy was simply astounding to drive, with an Akrapovic exhaust at the back and a trick intake system upfront giving it a roar like no other factory-tuned hot hatch at that time.

The new Megane RS Trophy will also come with an F1-inspired splitter under its front bumper, a wide rear diffuser, bespoke hatch spoiler and custom central exhaust tips. 19-inch Jerez wheels with high-performance Bridgestone tyres also come standard.

Three Family-focused options confirmed.

Renault will be launching updated versions of its Koleos mid-size SUV and its Duster compact SUV during the third quarter of 2020. While mechanical treatment will be kept minimal, you can expect a smart styling update as well as tweaks to the interior. Exact specifications and the grade walk will be made available closer to the time of launch.

For those consumers who want to keep the budget tight, but without compromising on style, comfort and safety, Renault SA will also bring an updated Sandero Stepway to market later this year. Bearing the TechRoad nomenclature we first saw on the Duster, the new Sandero Stepway will serve to keep compact hatchback buyers satisfied until the all-new fifth-generation Clio arrives.

While news that the updated Megane RS, Koleos, Duster and Sandero Stepway coming to SA this year remains exciting for the company and consumers, considering the state of the world, the fifth-generation Clio and the all-new Captur might not make it to SA this year, but they are still on the horizon...

Delays in production as well as pent up demand for these new vehicles in other parts of the world hint at a 2021 introduction for us, however if things change in the coming months, Renault SA will still look to bring the new compact hatch and the compact SUV to Group 1 Renault this year. 

"These are models that have a good track record and are quite revered in some instances. The above-mentioned models are refreshing the range, staying fresh, staying relevant and staying appealing to meet and exceed customers needs and expectations," the company's media relations manager, Viviene Ward, says.

She adds that Renault SA will push to offer even better value for customers in the coming months: "Ongoing, extensive work goes into monitoring the competitive environment with the main aim to position ourselves to stand out in terms of value for money. One example of being sensitive to these challenging times is the offer we are running on the Kwid range that includes 1-year's worth of comprehensive car insurance, a 2-year Service Plan, and a 5-year mechanical warranty from only R1999pm. 

"Another is the Sandero range that now offers customers a payment break of up to six months and it still comes with a 2-year Service Plan and 5-year mechanical warranty.”

Hyundai Elantra GT Hatchback Killed by Venue and Kona Crossovers

One of our favorite affordable hatchbacks is saying goodbye, and we’re not at all ready to see it go. Hyundai will discontinue the Elantra GT in the U.S. after the 2020 model year to focus on its growing crossover lineup.

Hyundai said the decision was “due to [an] expanded SUV lineup that includes Venue and Kona.” It’s a shame that Hyundai is sacrificing the Elantra GT, because we always viewed it as a great crossover alternative thanks to its spacious rear seats, cavernous cargo capacity, and strong visibility. We also love that the hatchback is nimble, relatively quiet, and fun to take around a corner.

This also marks the end of the road for the even-more-entertaining Elantra GT N Line. Along with a more powerful engine making 201 horsepower, this variant offers a slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission. In a nutshell, it’s a cheaper, and arguably just-as-fun-to-drive Volkswagen GTI alternative. Those looking for spirited performance may want to consider the upcoming Elantra N Line sedan, which looks promising based on early teaser photos. And let’s not forget about the raucous, three-door Hyundai Veloster N, which delivers a standard 275 horsepower for the new model year.

Also ensuring this news stings? We were hoping that the Elantra GT would receive the same upscale treatments as the recently updated i30 hatchback for Europe. This refreshed sister model to the U.S. car features attractively slim headlights and an assertive grille, plus more up-to-date interior tech. But instead of getting some much-needed TLC, the Elantra GT joins the Ford Focus ST, Volkswagen Golf R, and many other delectable hatches in the grave. We will continue to mourn these fine cars felled by taller, less fun, but apparently more popular crossovers and SUVs.

New VW Golf GTI confirmed for Geneva motor show The highly anticipated, eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI will be revealed at Geneva motor show in March, the car maker has confirmed. Volkswagen will have a grand total of four hot Golf models in dealers before the end of 2020 - with the R going on sale a few months after the GTI, diesel GTD and plug-in hybrid GTE. Following the reveal of the GTI and GTD at Geneva motor show, the R version will be shown in July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.  The transformation from regular Golf to GTI is likely to be as subtly handled as previous variants. It will include the usual dual-exit tailpipes, red brake calipers, chunky air intakes and a bodykit extending around the lower portion of the car.  2020 VW Golf GTI: engine and powertrain: In a reversal of original plans, Wolfsburg has decided not to make a more radical switch to hybrid power. Instead, the eighth-generation Golf GTI is set to stick with much of the hardware that has made the seventh-generation model such a success, both critically and commercially.  That means an updated version of the Audi-developed EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine used in the existing Mk7 Golf GTI. Again, like the current car, it will be offered with two power outputs: a standard output of around 242bhp and a more powerful 287bhp model, which will replace the MK7 Performance version. Hot Hatch Heartbreak: Volkswagen Golf R Discontinued for 2020

Yesterday, Volkswagen announced changes to its lineup for the 2020 model year, which mainly revolved around standardizing active driver assistance tech. When we combed through the release, we noticed the Golf R wasn’t outlined so we assumed that Volkswagen was either going to release a separate announcement or the car carried over unchanged. Unfortunately, neither of those are the case. The Volkswagen Golf R has been discontinued for 2020. A Volkswagen spokesman confirmed to MotorTrend that the all-wheel-drive Golf R has officially ended production, leaving the Golf GTI as the hottest model. The Golf R is expected to return when the eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf debuts. It’s rumored to feature a more potent 2.0-liter turbo-four that reportedly makes well over 300 hp, giving the Golf R more separation from the Golf GTI, which could only see a minor power bump if any at all. An updated MQB platform will underpin the eighth-generation Golf family.

Earlier this year, we reported that the next-generation Golf Mk 8 might only come in two flavors when it arrives in the U.S., the Golf GTI and Golf R. Both models are confirmed to come Stateside but other models including the base Golf and wagon variants are still under consideration. Earlier this year, Volkswagen announced the discontinuation of the Golf SportWagen and Golf Alltrack, both of which will be replaced by a small crossover in the U.S. market. 2021 Volkswagen Jetta Brings Updates to GLI and More

The Volkswagen Jetta was redesigned for the 2019 model year, and carried over mostly unchanged for 2020. The same is largely true for the 2021 model year of this midsize sedan, although a notable update is a new infotainment system in higher trim levels.

2021 Volkswagen Jetta: What’s New?

What remains the same is the Jetta’s handsome, if not eye-catching, design. The sharp crease just below the belt line adds some character to the flanks, but the ho-hum front end seems designed more to avoid giving offense than it is to inspire. What’s more interesting about the Jetta is that it rides on the well-loved MQB platform—shared with everything from VW’s Golf, GTI, and Atlas to Audi’s A3 and Q3— and also provides owners with more room inside than the last-generation model.

And there’s still no word about the rumored Jetta R, although you can be sure we’ll be the first to tell you about it should it happen.

2021 Volkswagen Jetta Trim Levels and Equipment

The regular 2021 Jetta comes in five trim levels: S, SE, R-Line, SEL, and SEL Premium. The Jetta GLI, the sportiest version, comes in two trims: S and Autobahn.

2021 Volkswagen Jetta Infotainment and Technology

Arguably the biggest change for 2021 is the inclusion of the new MIB3 infotainment system on the top two trim levels: SEL and SEL Premium. The other trim levels make do with the carryover MIB II system, a touchscreen setup. Previously, for 2020, the Jetta featured a 6.5-inch screen in S, SE, and R-Line models, while the SEL and SEL Premium use an 8.0-inch screen. The SEL Premium also offers the Discover Media functionality with 2.5D navigation.

For the Jetta GLI, only the Autobahn gets the upgraded MIB3 infotainment system.

2021 Volkswagen Jetta Interior Features

For 2021, there is little to note beyond what we’ve already said about the 2019 and 2020 models. The interior remains the same, which is mostly a good thing, considering the available Volkswagen version of Audi’s excellent Virtual Cockpit system, smartphone integration options, and subdued yet sporty design. The SE, SEL, and SEL Premium trims offer standard contrasting stitching on the wheel and shifter, and the SE and SEL trims also get six-way power adjustment on the driver’s seats.

2021 Volkswagen Engine, Transmission, and Chassis

Nothing new to report here. The sole engine is a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four, and we presume it will still offer a manual transmission on the base trim only. All other trims will get an eight-speed automatic. The engine makes 148 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, which is adequate but nothing to get the heart racing.

Unless you’re talking about the Jetta GLI. As before, it features a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four pumping out 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, available with a manual, and offering a lot more performance—if not the passion that previous GLIs instilled. We expect the 2021 GLI experience to be identical to 2020 save the infotainment and safety updates.

2021 Volkswagen Jetta Safety

The GLI Autobahn gets a host of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam control. This is in addition to the standard post-collision braking system, which debuted for 2020. There are no other apparent changes for safety systems in any other Jetta version or trim.

Volkswagen Updates I.D. Crozz Concept for Frankfurt

After debuting the I.D. Crozz in April, Volkswagen is bringing a new version of the concept to the Frankfurt auto show this month. The I.D. Crozz II previews an electric crossover that will hit the market in 2020. Oddly, the new concept looks extremely similar to the original one. The biggest changes include LED lights that look more realistic for production, updated wheels, and more noticeable body cladding that adds athletic appeal. In contrast to the Hibiscus Red Metallic paint job, the rear receives a black finish much like the old model. The roof appears to have solar panels. Inside the cabin, Volkswagen kept the general layout of the original concept. Removing the B-pillar frees up space, allowing easy entry and exit via doors that swing and slide open. There is apparently enough room to fit a bicycle despite the low roofline. Drivers and passengers can open and close the doors using voice commands. The production version will eventually feature a fully autonomous driving mode that passengers can be activated via voice instruction. Like the previous concept, the new model delivers 302 hp and tops out at 112 mph. An all-wheel-drive system comprises an electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear, in addition to a centrally located battery. VW says this layout helps with weight distribution and allows the I.D. Crozz II to achieve similar handling characteristics to the Golf GTI. The model features electronic damping, a multi-link rear suspension, and MacPherson struts. Range is estimated to hit about 310 miles. In addition to the crossover, Volkswagen will introduce two other electric vehicles as part of its new I.D. family. A hatch will arrive in 2020, and a revived Microbus is coming in 2022. All three vehicles will sit on VW’s all-electric MEB architecture and will run on an operating system that allows for quick software updates. The I.D.
