Does Genshin the game really care all that much about the morality of their characters?
Like a story is allowed to pick which elements it draws attention to in order to make the points it needs to make. So Scaramouche is granted an arc revolving around regretting his actions and admitting he’s done wrong, because his character is based on Buddhism and such story explores the concept of karma; while things like traveler committing genocide against the Tanit tribe and wiping out an entire clan in Inazuma is never questioned as the correct course of action, because the story doesn’t see any value in its moral dilemma —universally, this is not an acceptable thing to do, but the story had no points to make about it.
Fontaine so far is the most complicated nation in this aspect, where the story doesn’t bother all that much with the heavily charged morality (or lack there of) of life in the city, even though there’s so much that could be explored. For instance, something I keep complaining about because of the inspirations on Metropolis: the fact there are citizens living in the sewers and how ex convicts stay in the prison after completing their sentences due to the discrimination they face outside. Fontaine is highly unequal, yet the writing is not concerned with giving these aspects any more depth than an acknowledgement.
Perhaps as an audience we’re not meant to dwell on it, the story had other goals that it has achieved. But it also conveniently avoids placing responsibility or blame on the main and playable characters, specifically characters like Neuvillette and Furina who had been ruling the nation together. If we paid too much attention to these issues presented in the city, we’d start wondering why Neuvillette’s infinite compassion doesn’t extend to the children who play in the sewers and the prison. It’s almost like the writing intends us to observe these narratives in two different planes, divorced from the main storyline played by the main characters.
And that’s fine, I don’t personally mind suspending belief over something like this.
So I wonder if Arlecchino’s character will go a different route about the fact the orphanage is a child soldier factory. It seems she inherited it as part of the punishment for killing Cucrabena, and she takes care of the children in making them stronger to survive the harsh life they’ve been handed. It would be hypocritical, like the things I named earlier, to address Arlecchino’s moral dilemma without burning (heh) other main characters.
Because, first, why are there so many orphans in the nation where children are born by wishing at the fountain? In theory, there should not be this many unwanted children. Second, if there are this many orphaned children that the Fatui are taking advantage to fill their ranks with them, why hasn’t the government done something about it? Do they think it’s an appropriate measure, since the kids get a chance to survive and get extra criminal skills? Focalors’ plan relied on the machine accumulating power from the trials, so were the orphaned child soldiers the price to pay? Either by feeding the machine with criminals or by imprisoning their parents so they’d end up orphaned. There’s a lot of crime that goes unpunished in the city, for example, by individuals engaged in child trafficking, to the point characters like Wriothesley in his youth or Arlecchino take justice in their own hands. Nobody batted an eye to Cucrabena’s battle royale orphanage either. And the institute pays little attention to the freak accidents that kill workers.
So, at this point, is it really worth it for the writing to address the moral dilemma of Arlecchino’s orphanage without altering the perception of other characters like Neuvillette? It certainly could, and then just never mention how the entire system allows for it to happen, but me as the audience can’t say that I will care all that much. The writing has gone out of its way to downplay the buildup to her character, even adding new dialogues that exonerate her from what happened in the fortune slip quest in Inazuma, since that was the fault of the previous Knave. And the orphanage itself is a punishment imposed on her by the Fatui.

The stupidest plan 
You fell asleep in my car, I drove the whole time,
but that's ok, I'll just avoid the holes so you sleep fine.

for not using my taxes to fill holes with more cement.

He had spent the whole night sketching the battle between Wonder Man and Ace Anarchy. It had been very tedious to be working without proper lighting. For a moment he believed that when morning came, his drawing would not look as good as he thought. However, the morning had come.
And it was perfect.
Although now that he was polishing the last details while waiting for classes to begin, he came across a question that kept him from concentrating.
Simon quietly walked into the classroom, as if he was afraid of bothering someone with his mere presence (although they literally were only ones there). He sat in the first seat in the row to his right. Simon hated sitting upfront because he said it only brought more attention to himself than he wanted to. However, Hugh couldn't sit anywhere else. His glasses weren't the best.
Also, it was strangely depressing to sit on the last row and see that of the forty tables in the room, only fifteen were filled. Twenty if it was a busy day. From the front, it was easier to ignore that more than half of the kids in his class had dropped out of school. 
But Hugh had enough of ignoring things.
“What color are Ace Anarchy’s eyes?” he asked Simon.
“Good morning to you too,” he replied sarcastically.
“Good morning.” He took gray in one hand and blue in the other. “What color are Ace Anarchy's eyes?”
Simon looked carefully at the colors. “I don't know, gray? I feel like they are gray. I can't imagine him having blue eyes.”
Hugh agreed.
“What are you drawing?” Simon asked.
“Propaganda,” he replied with a mischievous smile.
“It looks good.”
“I’m a propaganda expert, indeed.” He grabbed his classroom chair and pushed it to the right next to Simon's. He would return it to its place when the professor entered. “Have you thought about what I told you about yesterday?”
He looked away. “No.”
He shook his head. Simon was lying. “I was being very serious, you know.”
“And I was too. Stop thinking bullshit,” and he smacked him on the back of the neck. “Or do I have to beat those ideas out of you, Wonder Man?”
Hugh hit him back, but in the arm. “Come on. I don’t believe it is bullshit.”
And I don't think you believe that either.
“All right, but you believe many things. You believed in Santa Claus until very recently.” Simon started playing with a ball of crumpled paper that had been lying on the floor for a week. “When you told me ‘Simon, but it has all the logic in the world that Santa exists, he is a prodigy, like us ’ and I was like—"
“A part of me died that tragic day,” he said in a dramatic voice, one hand on his chest. “My childhood…”
“You were eleven years old. It was to save you from bullying. I was protecting you.” The door opened again and they both turned at the same time to see who it was. It was just a group of girls. Good. “It's not like it helped that much though.”
He shrugged.
Neither Simon nor he had been spared from bullying during those years. All the schools in the district were mostly filled with non-prodigies because most of the prodigies were in gangs or hiding in their homes. The few who were still in school did their best not to cause problems and to go unnoticed. They were part of that last group since middle school.
However, the entire school found out about their powers when Simon got so nervous at a presentation that he disappeared in front of his entire class. Hugh tried to intervene but stood up so fast that he tripped over his backpack and hit his nose on the floor. He did not bleed or receive a single scratch. People were quick to connect the dots.
Obviously if one was a prodigy, the other one was too. 
Alter all, freaks stuck together. 
They thought high school was going to be different, but no. On the first day, an older boy caught Simon turning invisible intermittently in the bathroom while having a panic attack. A few hours later, a girl tried to stab Hugh with a pencil and all it did was break it as soon as it made contact with his skin.
“The next time you have a panic attack,” he told Simon on their way home, “tell me.”
“And the next time someone tries to stab you with a pencil, you stab them back.”
When you were a prodigy, it didn't matter if one believed in Santa or not. The mere fact of existing was enough to cause problems.
“At eleven you're still a kid,” Simon kicked him under the bench as he laughed. “Did you ever believe in Santa?”
“No. At my house the one who gave the presents was Baby Jesus,” he replied. “But I didn't believe in him either. How could a baby deliver all those gifts? His hands are too tiny”
Simon gave a light laugh, but Hugh couldn't even smile.
He toyed with the color blue. “Simon, did you ever believe in something?”
Simon bit the inside of his cheek and looked up at the ceiling. He took his sweet time thinking before replying, “I have believed in things.”
He breathed a sigh of relief. “Like what things?”
“Well... I believed the stories my mom told me before bed,” he replied. “I also believed they were never going to stop producing The Scarlet Enchantress and the Phantom Feline comics—” He gestured for him to come closer— “or that I was going to be a prodigy,” he whispered.
Hugh smiled at him. “The best curse ever.”
“What did you believe in?”
He laid his head on his desk. “I have a whole list.”
Simon covered his head with his hood and pretended to be ready to fall asleep. “The short version of that list, then.”
Hugh imitated him. “I used to believe that adults never grew up. Like, they were born as adults,” Simon laughed and rolled his eyes. “I thought little people were running the television inside of it. I thought my aunt was the most beautiful woman in the world—”
“She is,” Simon replied.
“Simon, stop it. She is my aunt. You have many other girls to choose from.”
“They are not as pretty as your aunt.”
“Simon!”
Simon laughed and the girls shushed him. His friend turned red in the ears as they returned to their conversation like nothing. Hugh wanted to point out how rude they had been.
However, when Simon discreetly smiled at him again, he decided to continue with his list. Those girls were not worthy of his attention. “I also believed in Santa Claus, until someone ruined my hopes and dreams.” Another kick. Simon kicked people too much. “But I also believe in that someone, you know.”
Simon's smile almost disappeared. “Well... that someone doesn't believe in himself.”
I knew it.
He understood his friend. He really did. He knew there were times when Simon would get more nervous than normal in banal situations. Or that he had some days when he didn't want to get out of bed at all. 
Those were the worst.
But despite that, not a single day passed that Simon didn't get up and go to school with him. Even when Hugh had to stop at his house and practically beg him to do it. 
Simon had never left him alone. And Hugh wasn't going to do it now.
He gifted him the widest of his smiles. “Well that someone doesn't have to worry about it. I can believe in him for both of us.”
Simon stared into his eyes for several seconds. He felt like he knew that face as well as he knew his. “Are you sure?” he asked.
“I am sure,” he replied.
Simon kicked him again.
Hugh felt sparks exploding inside his stomach.
Suddenly, a body slammed into the lockers, and screams filled the school hallway. The trio of girls ran out to see who was involved. Hugh leaned out of the small window in the door. He had always believed he was above that kind of thing, and he was. But it was also the most interesting thing that was going to happen all day.
Simon followed him.
They were a couple of boys from their grade, the same ones who constantly teased them. One with curly blond hair was holding his friend by the collar of his shirt and was yelling an infinity of curse words. The other three in his group, instead of separating them as good friends would do, they had joined the chorus of “Fight! Fight!"
Who knows why they were fighting. They were always fighting someone, but never with each other. They usually grabbed someone smaller than themselves for that, like the prodigy boy that was a grade below them. (They would never physically fight Hugh or Simon, making jokes at their expense was enough for them.) 
Cowards.
Maybe they were just brutally bored.
But there had to be other ways to shake off the boredom.
“I'm going to tell a teacher,” Hugh said.
At that moment, one of the girls ran out of the scene in the direction of the teachers' office. Well, at least now he wouldn't be the one to look like a snitch in front of his entire grade.
“That someone is slightly concerned,” Simon whispered.
“Why?” The blond slammed his friend again, but this time, against the door. “For them?”
“No,” he replied, a little disturbed by the tremendous blow that boy had received. “I am— that someone is... Well, what if the plan you have in your head is stupid?”
At that moment, Hugh realized that he had no plans. That was weird. He always had a plan for everything.
Beating Ace Anarchy should be no exception.
“I suppose we can come up with something. The two of us,” he added.
The fight was broken up by a short-haired teacher. They hurriedly returned their school chairs to their places and the rest of their class entered. Five, six, nine...
Eleven. Only eleven kids had attended that day. And that counting the ones who were fighting a few moments ago. 
“Don't think that someone is just going to blindly follow you,” Simon whispered. “He will tell you when you have a stupid plan.”
“I would be very grateful for that,” he also replied in a whisper. “Although I always have amazing plans, to begin with.”
Simon tried to kick him, but at that moment, the teacher from the first class entered. Hugh chuckled, and in response, Simon discreetly raised his middle finger in his direction.
He knew at that moment that it would not be a stupid plan.

Vibe of the Week 09/08
First of all, step aside Bill, because you’re not the most important Leo in my life.
A big, huge, resounding happy birthday to the King of my family--my old man. He’s the greatest dude I know. He can fix seriously anything, he has guided me my whole life, he’s a phenomenal story teller and he’s just....he’s the best guy I know. I have high standards in men because my dad has loved my mom so intensely for their entire marriage (44 years and counting), and he still does. He buys her flowers. He writes her songs. They have date nights every week.
August, and particularly the first 10 days in August, are so weird for me. I have so much history and it’s all in sequence--a past love, his birthday was August 7. Bill’s is the 9th. Pop’s is the 10th. There’s more but it’s just...man, that Leo energy. It exhausts me.
Last week we talked a bit about embracing the change that’s coming, starting to reap the harvest for our efforts. The universe gave us a bit of a break.
This week’s Oracle deck is the Shaman Wisdom Cards, and the Tarot is the Llewellyn Wizards Tarot deck (which like, look, I love these cards--but I cannot even express how much I HATE the design on the back. It is so fucking obnoxious. Why would you design something that bright for these cards? Ugh I hate it.)

Words to meditate on: Courage, brave, recognition, abundance, growth, balance
This is quite a lovely card. It’s the striking of the match--something is being lit up here, and you’re about to be stimulated in a million different ways--love, relationships, creativity. Something here is lighting your interest, and there’s a lovely sense of rejuvenation. The cards are not kicking our ass anymore this week (thank you, cards). This card speaks of collaboration, of group work, of fulfillment, a sense of community. Deeper than that, a loss of individual self (the good kind), where the “I” becomes the “we” and we’re all stronger for it. Fortifying your group, man. WHERE MY BITCHES AT.
For the Tarot this week, I did a Celtic cross spread just for something different. Also, I am so determined to master a riffle shuffle which I cannot do to save my life. I’m awful at it.

Okay so look, a few things here. First of all, as far as spreads go, you can’t get more meh than this.
Second of all, I get bummed when I don’t see a Major in a spread but I had forgotten to pull the overarching theme card and when I did, MY GIRL THE EMPRESS answering my call.
Interesting that last week, we also had a Major Arcana as the overarching theme (The Hanged Man). You know what other Major appeared last week?
My girl’s boo, the Emperor.
Now, third and final point before we dive in: Christ on a cracker, WOULD YOU LOOK AT THIS OVERABUNDANCE OF MASCULINE ENERGY? My god, Leo season is just...it’s just so...Leo. My dudes, tuck it back in. Stop trying to pee on everything and stake your claim to it. It’s gonna be okay, guys. No need to be all alpha male about everything.
Alright here we go, buckle the fuck up because....ugh, Leo.
First impressions: All of the Suits represented in near perfect balance, which could mean harmony or like...a fucking battle. We’ll see.
The Empress - overarching theme
My badass bish. Abundance. Nourishment, but of the soul kind. A burst of creativity and passion, a rejuvenation in life.
1)  Page of Wands - the situation right now
A willingness to learn. Something is exciting you here, some new prospect that has you wanting to absorb everything you can and act on it, but a bit of ego and lack of confidence might be holding you back. You’re stuck on yourself, not letting yourself move forward.
2)  Seven of Pentacles-- the conflict
Getting in your own way is alright sometimes, because you’re evaluating. You’re laying out all your options, reflecting on it. What strikes me here is you’re weighing value in some capacity--like, is it worth it to pursue this? Because whatever it is, it seems to come at a high enough cost (actual, or figurative) to have you taking a step back. And this is actually quite remarkable, because in Leo season we’re all just fucking roaring and ready to jump head first into anything--but not this. Not here and not now. There’s such careful deliberation, and that’s okay.
3)  Ten of Wands - the atmosphere around the situation
Burdens, obligations, responsibilities. Just because we want something very badly doesn’t mean it’s going to work out for us--previous obligations and responsibilities, our role in our lives and the lives of others--these are very real things which make our wants and dreams not a possibility in our immediate future. Sometimes the timing is just bad.
It also...it also looks a bit like you’ve been burned here before. You know this tale. It ended differently for you last time. You wanted something, were passionate about something, went after it with everything you had (like you’re supposed to) and man did you fall on your face. Hard enough that it stayed with you, that feeling stayed with you.
4)  King of Pentacles - the base of the matter, what is really behind the drive
balanced, practical, cautious, generous. My boo, you want stability. You are chasing something so hard because it will bring you stability, reassurance, in a way that you need and in a way that you haven’t felt in a long time.
5) King of Swords - past influences
Oh bubs, somebody done you wrong. You thought you had what you needed before--and god again I’m a little taken aback at how masculine this reading is, boys are so dumb--somebody tricked you. Somebody knew what you needed, what you craved--authority, stability, communication, logic. A manipulator roped you in knowing that you needed all those things, and they provided them to you--for a short while, and on a superficial level. But you were so desperate for what you needed, that you took it.
And it burned you. So now, you’re focusing this fight internally--you are out here like a Queen, trying to be this force for you. YAAAAAAS.
6) King of Cups - forthcoming influences
You’re getting there, boo. Whether or not this is someone who Is going to enter your life, or if this is just you coming into your own....I’m not sure. The cards ain’t telling me. But it is showing me that the forthcoming influence is BALANCE, and channeling that masculine energy. The energy of being assertive but not rude, the energy of balancing emotional needs with rational thought, just...balance balance balance. Evenness. Kindness.
Finding ways to give your heart what it needs, while also leaving space for responsibility, rational thought, and growth boo. GROWTH.
And like, I am most definitely not one of those people like “love is coming to you” but like....babe it kinda looks like it is?
It doesn’t have to be a dude if you don’t bat for that team. It could be somebody who embodies all of the best characteristics and traits that we deem masculine.
7) Six of Cups-- in the “bitch where the fuck am I” position
You’re back refocused on the little things that matter. If we’re talking romantically, think of how like....a huge weekend getaway to a private vineyard somewhere in the countryside that took a lot of planning and is just this wild gesture of passionate love--that’s sweet, right? That feels nice.
But a small note on the coffee machine when you wake up, that says “You’re going to do great today, I love you” referencing a meeting that you mentioned to your significant like a week ago and said you were nervous for it. That...man, it’s the little things.
Right now, you’re coming back to centre. You’re reeling your scope back in, and you’re determining what really matters to you.
But there’s also a bit of caution here, in those small gestures--small gestures can alter our future in literally every single way. Be mindful of your actions, and their impact. Don’t be haunted by your past, but also...kid, don’t be nostalgic for it. This is so not the time.
8) Queen of Cups - the view of others
Ohhhh isn’t this a trick. Ha, lookit that Queen. This is how others view you, bubs. As this powerhouse badass woman who is in complete control at all times, reserved yet cut throat, elegant yet deadly. People view you as a person of envy, someone who always seems to have it all together.
9) Eight of Cups - hopes and fears
You’re worried that this quest or this search you’re on, this need to feel something in your past but in a much better, more fulfilling way....you’re worried it doesn’t exist. You’re worried that what you seek isn’t actually out there. You hope it is--but there’s enough doubt in you (hello! Get the fuck back there, past experiences and stay the fuck there!) that you’re terrified.
Your journey can’t be explained logically. And this is that fucking Leo sun shit, you know? If it ain’t logical or practical, then it either 1) doesn’t exist, and/or 2) you shouldn’t go anywhere near it.
Fuck that Leo side of everything.
What you seek is out there. It is not rational, but it doesn’t have to be rational to be real. The heart has reasons that even REASON doesn’t understand.
What you seek is out there, and it’s yours to find. Go.
10) Eight of Wands - Potential outcome
Listen, I love this idea of serendipity. Of self fulfilling prophecies. Because this card...mmm, what a phenomenal card to end on.
The very fact that you are out there and that you had the courage to seek this out, means that 1) it exists, and 2) that you will find it.
You taking the action of following your heart is going to set into motion a whole series of karmic reactions that you will also need on your journey. This card is travel, it’s communication, it’s a satisfying journey, it’s the jackpot. You keep putting one foot in front of the other, you keep following that heart of yours, and result will be what you expect it to be.
tl;dr: fuck this Leo energy. You do you boo, stay gentle.

Hello! I'm a Mass Effect fan & I reread a post you made on the trilogy & its story structure, & I was curious if you'd think swapping the main plots of the first two instalments would do much to improve things? As in swapping the villain focuses around, fighting the Collectors in ME1, & Saren in ME2. I've talked about the idea with a friend before & how it'd clear some logical issues that arise in 2, such as the Council's denial of the Reapers when they could've seen Sovereign out their window.
Originally I intended to answer this before the holidays, but well… the holidays.
In short, no.
To make that answer longer; it wouldn’t not fix it, but it also doesn’t really do much to address the core problems, structurally, that I see. Fundamentally the problem isn’t with the antagonists of the individual stories that each game tries to tell, but with the fact that they are essentially individual stories. What Saren does has little to do with what the Collectors do and neither builds on the themes of the other. 
They certainly could have, with the Collectors essentially representing the ultimate end point of Saren’s collaboration. But there’s no sign of that sort of connection, of that sort of reflection in the games themselves; all indications are that the Reapers simply took whatever leftovers they had of the Protheans and twisted them. If perhaps Javik (or rather a similarly position character, they would have to have been very different from Javik himself) had appeared in the second game rather than the third it might have been possible to build that sort of thematic/narrative meaning in.
But, that still would only have been a paper thin sort of thematic bandaid.
Ultimately what gives a story meaning is the questions it asks of its’ audience, not the things it tells them, but the things it asks them to tell themselves. 
And, in the end, all three of the games offer up very different questions. ME1 is interested in what Saren is up to, what happened to the Protheans, why the Geth are suddenly showing up, that sort of stuff. ME2 concerns itself with who and what the Collectors are, what is happened to the human colonists, and whether Cerberus is worth redeeming (the answer is no, btw). ME3 spends most of its time figuring out who and what can help you fight the Reapers, what the Crucible is, and why the Reapers are doing what they are doing. The only ‘question’ all three games have in common is 'how do we defeat the Reapers,’ which is a boring question for several reasons.
There are only a few answers, basically all of which are as obvious from the start as they are at the end; 'you don’t,’ 'fight them,’ 'someone will save you.’ Understand I don’t mean any of these answers are bad, but that they make an unsatisfying throughline to pin your series on because the audience can see the answer coming a mile off. For these questions what matters isn’t the question or the answer, but the journey to get there. The journey of the Mass Effect Trilogy is enjoyable, satisfying.
It’s the finish line where the story stumbles and that’s where the questions and answers that story is about matter. 
Unfortunately the third game spends a lot of time on the answer to a question that never really mattered (no character in the entire series has figuring out the Reapers motivation as their driving focus) even if it was technically asked in the first game. Because it’s not enough to ask the question, you have to actually spend time exploring its dimensions, you have to make it matter to the characters and to your readers/audience.
Structurally 'fixing’ the trilogy is actually pretty easy, in the sense that you can do it with relatively few key alterations. Move the discovery of the Crucible from early on in the third game to early on in the second. Boom. Fixed (of course this necessitates further macro and micro scale changes across the rest of the series in order to make it really work, but that’s writing for you).
Of course that does nothing for the theme problems that are really at the root of why so many people were unsatisfied with the end, but just cutting out the Star Child ending bullshit would basically neuter that issue and from there you can just make turn the Crucible into a reverse trap (meant as a trap for the galaxy, turned into a trap for the Reapers using the various elements (Geth, Rachni, Javik, whatever you want) of the series to bullshit the how).
And that’s where I’m gonna cut off because I don’t want to spend the next few hours charting out all the small little changes you could make to fix this mess of a series. Hope this is what you wanted.

Sid would gladly stay in the pool all day but after a couple of hours Geno finally lures him out with the promise of good food and they share lunch together at the kitchen island. After lunch the two of them head down to Geno’s media room for a movie.
Sid heads straight for one of the Penguins-themed recliners while Geno is busy looking for the remote control. There’s a book on the table next to the chair Sid chooses and he scoops it up to read the cover. The Baby Book: Everything You Need to Know about Your Baby from Birth to Age Two. There’s a photo of babies on the cover and a couple of Post-it notes sticking out near the beginning of the book. He holds it up with a smile. “Any good?”
Geno glances up and that is definitely a blush when he sees what Sid’s holding. “Just get started.”
Sid sits and flips through the book, noting that Geno has started highlighting parts of a list called The Seven Baby B’s of Attachment and smiles at Geno who is settling in the chair next to him. “It looks interesting.”
Geno shrugs but Sid can see the hint of a smile that he’s holding back. “Like I say, just get started but look like has some good stuff to learn. This book only talk about after they born, though. I need to find book on how baby develop now. Ordered some in Russian but take a few more days to get here.”
“I’ve been reading some good websites and the doctor did give me some pamphlets and book recommendations. I got one at the library but didn’t really like it.”
“What you not like about?”
“It just felt, I don’t know, harsh or something. I just keep thinking this little baby is going to be here and depend on us for everything. This book made it seem a little bit like the baby is your enemy that you have conquer. I guess that’s just not really my style.”  
Geno makes a face. “Not sound like my style either.”
Sid flips through the book again. “Maybe I’ll check this one out from the library.”
“Okay. And if you find other good one, tell me too.”
Sid smiles at him. “Deal. So what are we watching?”
“Goonies.”
“Really?” Sid’s face lights up.
“I know, is probably silly but I start to watch with Gonch girls and never get to finish.”
“No, Geno, I love The Goonies.”
Geno beams at him. “Nice to know baby daddy have good taste,” he says and laughs at Sid’s resulting honks of laughter.
It’s not until later, when they’re toting their cups and popcorn bowls back to the kitchen, quoting lines from the movie at each other that Sid’s phone rings again and he looks at it with a frown. He’d forgotten all about the call earlier but now there are two messages.
“Everything okay?” Geno is peering at him curiously.
“Yeah, it’s just I got two messages from a number I don’t know.”
“Should listen, see what it is.”
Sid’s heart sinks when he listens to the message. He does his best to school his expression into something neutral but he can tell by the furrow of Geno’s brow that it’s not working.  
When the message ends, he puts down his phone and swallows hard. He hates that he’s upset about this. This is logical, he tells himself. Of course this is something that Geno would need and there is no reason that it should sting the way it does. If he needs Sid to sign a non-disclosure agreement then Sid will do it. It’s not a big deal. It’s fine. Just fine.
“If you wanted me to sign something, you could have just asked me,” he blurts out and regrets it immediately when Geno’s eyes fly wide open.
“What?”
“The non-disclosure agreement.”
Geno’s face goes from confused to incensed between one blink and the next. “Who that message from?”  
“Some guy from Pens PR. He said they already talked to you about it yesterday.”
Geno sets his jaw. “And I tell them under no circumstances to ask you that. How they even get your number?!” He scrambles around, presumably looking for his phone while Sid lets that sink in.
“Wait, you told them not to?”
“Of course told them not to. And they do anyway!”
“Why?”
Geno stops and looks at Sid, confused. “What you mean why?”
“Why did you tell them not to ask me that?”
“Because we gonna have a baby, Sid, not fucking business contract!”
“Oh.” It’s all Sid has time to get out before Geno turns on his heel and charges out of the kitchen and Sid’s left trying to process everything that just happened.
Geno told his agent and the entire Pens PR and legal teams about Sid and the baby and then refused to let them contact Sid. He told them no. And why? Because he didn’t want it to feel like a business transaction.
Geno did that. For him. For their baby. He could have easily asked Sid for a NDA when he asked him to see a new doctor but he didn’t and apparently didn’t plan to. Warm fondness washes over Sid for a split second before he remembers that Geno is on his way to rip someone’s head off and he scrambles to catch up.
By the time he tracks Geno down in the media room, he can already hear him talking.
“...make it very clear I not want anyone bother Sid! Understand you have job to do but I very clear about this! I already say I talk to him about doctor, work with him on stay private. Sid have enough to worry about—not need you calling and scare!”
Oh no. This sounds bad and the last thing Sid wants is for Geno to get himself into trouble over this.
“Yes, I’m aware is risk but is my baby and my risk to take!”
Geno lets out a frustrated growl and pinches the bridge of his nose as he listens.
“Understand organization trying to protect but not need this! Can’t believe you go behind my back like this!”
And oh god, Sid’s anxiety spikes. “Geno?” He doesn’t want to interrupt but he can’t have Geno getting in trouble over this. He just can’t.
Geno whirls around and, taking in Sid’s anxious expression, says, “Have to go. You not contact him again,” and hangs up the phone.
“Call them back. I’ll sign the agreement, it’s not a big deal.”
“No. No way.” This is the first time Sid has seen Geno dig in his heels like this and it confuses him.
‘I’m not mad about it. I understand.”
Geno frowns. “I’m sorry they call you and make you think this something I want. I don’t want and I tell them that.”
“They’re just trying to protect you.”
“Not necessary. Know you not cause problems, not need NDA. Period.” His tone indicates that the conversation is over and maybe it is for now but when Sid finally heads home later, he finds the number and leaves a message.
“This is Sidney Crosby. You left me a message earlier. I’ll sign the NDA.”

It takes a couple of days to coordinate but eventually Sid finds himself back at the arena, meeting with a man who introduces himself as Parker from Public Relations. He feels a little guilty for going against Geno’s wishes but at least now there can’t be any doubt in their minds—Sid wants to protect Geno, too. He sits quietly as Parker explains the terms of the contract—basically preventing him from disclosing information about the pregnancy or his relationship with Geno to a very long list of people. It’s not like he plans to tell anyone other than his family anyway but something inside him twists sourly as he listens Parker speak to him as if he’s some kind of criminal.  
As soon as Parker hands him a copy of the document he stands to leave, anxious to get out of there.
“One more thing, Mr. Crosby,” he says and Sid stops, wondering what else they could want from him.
“We would like you to do a paternity test.”
Sid gapes. “What?”
“The organization needs to be sure that you’re not faking the pregnancy and that Evgeni really is the father. Surely you can understand that.”
“He is,” Sid bites out, feeling like he’s been slapped.
“Then you shouldn’t have any problem taking the test. Dr. Vyas informs me it’s just a simple blood draw—nothing invasive.”
“Geno would have told me if he wanted one.”
“Would he, though?” Parker cocks his head, looking at Sid as though he’s trash. “If he’d upset you, you could have gone public and outed him. He had to keep you happy.”
Sid grits his teeth, willing himself not to cry. “I would never do that.”
“Then you should prove that with a paternity test. Don’t you think you owe him this, at least, after everything he’s risking for you?”
Sid looks away, has to swallow before he mutters. “Fine.”
He’s introduced to Dr. Vyas who seems nice enough but it doesn’t matter. Sid feels sick before the blood draw ever happens. Everything he’s risking for you… Parker had said, making it clear what the organization thought of him. Sid blinks back his tears as the kind doctor does the blood draw. It doesn’t matter how it makes him feel if it will help protect Geno.

okay ik like everything’s been said about steve’s ending in endgame and i’ve made a million little posts but i’ve been meaning to write my own essay bc i’m MAD (if u liked it for him then like i’m sure u don’t wanna read so u can scroll on past) and there’s a lot of other stuff i didn’t like/that didn’t make sense about the movie but this post is about steve anyway let’s go
so from what i can tell there is not even a consensus among people who liked the ending whether it’s the same timeline or an alternate timeline but let’s talk about the possibilities here and what they mean, at least based on my understanding
option 1: same timeline
this means one of two things. either steve was actually peggy’s husband all along OR by going back and marrying her, that erases her husband and children entirely.
so if steve was peggy’s husband all along, that means that?? old steve has been walking around this entire time and nobody knew about it? this means that in 2016 sharon carter was like “you know what would be fun? kissing my great uncle when he’s young and hot” which WOW i thought it was icky before just bc she was PEGGY’S niece? marvel might have just made that worse. and hey, i’ll be fair, i’m sure in the very little time they likely took to think about this ending, they definitely weren’t thinking about sharon, considering they hardly thought about her when she was actually appearing in the movies. if steve was peggy’s husband all along, that means she was lying in the smithsonian footage, which hey, i don’t doubt her ability to lie, but the whole ass video is floating around out there and i’m just not sure you can fake that kind of emotion. when they ask her about her being the last person to talk to steve? that is a person talking about losing someone they cared for six years ago. it just contradicts so much of catws and other parts of the mcu (and the idea that people have that this was the plan the entire time? yeah fucking right the writers do not plan like that if they did there wouldn’t be so many fucking inconsistencies in this universe. i’m willing to bet they couldn’t name peggy’s husband in catws bc they were planning agent carter and thought there would be an explicit confirmation of who it was) and anyway, even if steve was her husband all along, there’s no way either steve or peggy could have KNOWN that she didn’t have a future being erased. so would either of them have really WANTED to take that chance?
the other option is of course that peggy moved on from steve, fell in love with somebody else, got married, had children, grandchildren, etc. if that’s the case, that means steve just changed her entire storyline. and who knows what marrying steve could have changed. it just........okay, agent carter was the first thing in the mcu i watched before i even knew shit about captain america (literally when they showed flashbacks i was like *maria hill voice* who’s this guy) but while we don’t know with any certainty that daniel sousa was the guy she ended up married to, i would have to guess steve went back to BEFORE she and daniel got together, meaning that like the entirety of agent carter is probably erased. her whole INCREDIBLE journey. i’ve read a million things the last week so if someone can let me know who the fuck said this, please do, but anyway someone said peggy’s story really begins when steve goes into the ice and it’s SO TRUE. “i have lived a life. my only regret is that you didn’t get to live yours.” LET THEM KEEP THE LIVES THEY WERE MEANT TO LIVE. and anyway, i just think there’s no way, going back and changing who she marries wouldn’t also alter SO MUCH of what she did, and therefore our timeline.
either way, this option goes against everything about steve. i don’t care if he IS tired of fighting, there’s still no way he would sit quietly and not try to prevent things from happening. assassinations, hydra infiltrating shield, his BEST FRIEND being tortured and brainwashed for seventy years.
steve: if i see a situation pointed south, i can’t ignore it. sometimes i wish i could. tony: no you don’t. steve: no i don’t.
again, i’ll be fair, several years have passed since steve said that, but i just don’t buy the idea that he’s gonna sit back quietly, when his character through the whole mcu has been about fighting for what’s right 
option 2: alternate timeline
i’ve seen some people say it’s because of the bracelets they used that would have allowed steve to jump back into our timeline when he’s old and be in the right place at the right time but like..........what’s the point. he ditched his friends and lived through seventy years without them so am i expected to believe that this steve (i don’t know him) even really cares about handing off the shield to sam (which, i did want, just in the form of our steve retiring and living his own life in the PRESENT) idk that last scene was just so much so fast and i was so mad watching it unfold i could hardly stand it so whatever
so okay say steve goes back to peggy and creates an alternate timeline by doing so, maybe in this timeline he rescues bucky and prevents a bunch of other things from happening
........but wasn’t the point of returning the stones to when and where they got them (which, of course we know the only reason steve was doing this alone was to get to this ending, but it’s ridiculous considering they had a whole team going to all different places in the movie WHATEVER) to PREVENT the creation of an alternate timeline? that’s why the ancient one was hesitant about giving bruce the time stone because it would create a branch or whatever IT MAKES NO SENSE.
this theory at least doesn’t necessarily screw over peggy since...our peggy would still exist and the steve and peggy we saw at the end of the movie would be in an alternate timeline
but it does go against the time travel rules as i understand them and it still fucks up steve’s characterization

everything’s fucked anyway
if they ever address it, whatever the mcu logic is, all these possibilities have flaws/leave plot holes because they really hardly gave any thought to their characters OR their time travel logic bc they wanted to force this ending
seriously all the peggy references throughout the movie like?? ofc he’s still gonna have that compass and i guess still carry it around since he’s been on the run and hasn’t a permanent place and therefore no safe place to keep it but....he looks at her picture before they go after thanos? it would make more sense if he looked at a picture on his phone of like him, bucky and sam or something. he’s at that group meeting five years later and talks about the loss of his chance with peggy which was u know like a decade ago for him (and i know i don’t like people saying ‘oh just get over it’ i don’t mean it like that i just mean like.......he was willing to move on in cacw - with her NIECE but whatever - and suddenly it’s like he’s never ever been over her and calling her the love of his life) instead of talking about the loss of bucky and sam, two of his best friends? wanda? t’challa? maria? nick? even the way he dresses is very reminiscent of the first avengers when he’s JUST woken up, but he gets away from that throughout the cap movies and gets more used to modern life. endgame does everything to force the idea that he’s still completely uncomfortable in this time. as if what? twelve years in the twenty-first century would mean going back to the 1940s makes you just as much a man out of time.
AND PEGGY. my god, i’ve loved peggy’s story though the mcu and look what this fucking movie did. peggy doesn’t even have fucking lines. we don’t even hear her talk when he stares longingly and dramatically at her through a window (it really reminded me of that jess/rory scene in the gilmore girls revival and hey that was a pairing i thought SHOULD have ended up together, but should not have had all that pining very similarly like ten years later it’s just weird the disappointments i feel in both of these things are so similar but that’s beside the point). we don’t get to see them have a conversation when he goes back to her. tony talked to howard and thor talked to frigga and we didn’t see steve talk to peggy. if she’s supposed to be The Love Of His Life (does marvel know if she could have another love of her life then so could he but whatever) and is suddenly his reason for everything or whatever they’re trying to play at, shouldn’t we get more than a longing look (not even a mutual one, like all the ones we got in catfa) and the dance? peggy carter is AMAZING and she doesn’t even really get a say. they reduced her to the object of steve’s affection and nothing more and it’s HORRIBLE.
frigga said “you’re not my thor” and i think peggy, be it 40s peggy or 70s peggy, would recognize that this is not her steve. look at everything he’s been through the last decade. he’s been through so much and yes, his relationship with peggy was a missed chance, but....the steve of now is not the steve that she lost. and i think no matter how much she might have wanted it to be whenever he came back to her, she would have known that and she would have sent him back home where he belongs, with his new family, in the present.
peggy was the one who said in catws “the world has changed and none of us can go back. all we can do is our best and sometimes the best that we can do is to start over.” steve’s whole story since waking up has been about moving on and making peace with the fact that he lost his chance at the life he could have had after the war (much as i hate aou, it does touch on that fact, he says someone who wanted family and stability or w/e isn’t who came out of the ice and he says at the end of the movie “i’m home” THIS IS HIS HOME MARVEL HERE AND NOW). the fact that the trailer used peggy’s quote about moving forward and then fucking went against the whole ass point.......wild
and i hate to say this i really do.........but not in a satisfying way, just in an it-would-make-sense way. i didn’t want any characters to die, i think after seeing characters suffer so much they deserve a happy ending (so don’t tell me i don’t want steve to be happy because i do i’ve been yelling about how he needs to rest since cacw). but. BUT. it would have made more sense if he died, if he sacrificed himself, because that was a thing he constantly did throughout the mcu, just ya know, he always survived it. going down in the plane in catfa, on the helicarrier in catws, in sokovia in aou, and so on
and lemme tell you, steve dying? that was my Big Fear for this movie, i didn’t want to believe they would go there (i never expected they would go there with tony AND NAT god i’m mad about her too but that’s not what this post is about) but i was prepared for the possibility. when i first saw the theory floating around about him going back in time to be peggy, i didn’t think it was feasible (and it’s not! truly! it makes no sense!) and i didn’t think they would do something as complicated as messing with time like that (boy was i wrong) so i wrote it off. but i think.......what happened feels worse, because character death in movies like these can p much always be fixed you know? even if canon doesn’t, fic can keep everything canon gives us and still be like ‘oh they’re not actually dead because ____’ and this....this can’t be changed. fic has to change the ending. that last five minutes. five minutes fucked up ten years of characterization. anyway.
so here’s what i was thinking about? while not exactly the same because it was ya know parents they lost, thor had a conversation with frigga, tony had a conversation with howard. imagine if it had been steve on the mission to get the soul stone. and okay as a clintasha stan (fuck you aou) i LOVED that scene until nat’s death, i loved them fighting each other to be the one to go. but if it had been steve and maybe still nat too, he could have had his own blast from the past like thor and tony did with the red skull because idt he ever even found out it was the red skull in the soul world (is that what it’s called i forget), bc iirc clint just said something about a red guy. anyway it could have made for some nice catfa parallels with steve and red skull and if he WAS with nat it could have made for a nice aou parallel when they stay to get all the citizens out of there (”where else am i gonna get a view like this?” bc both my babies are willing to sacrifice themselves to save the world). but imagine when the relationship between steve and natasha has also been such a big part of the mcu, the two of them learning to trust each other and protect each other, and save each other, imagine both of them disagreeing over who should be the one to die, maybe not in the same way as clint and nat, not with physically trying to keep the other down, but...fighting about it nonetheless. imagine natasha watching him fall, imagine her returning without him.
of course this would’ve made me mad too because that would’ve meant not just that steve died, but that he died without getting to see bucky and sam again. but at least it would’ve MADE NARRATIVE SENSE and not fucked up his character, because it’s exactly the kind of thing he would do. anyway, it didn’t even have to be this idea of mine, it didn’t even have to be death at all, i just think...it would have made more sense than chasing after this fantasy of a life that he realized (and seemed to accept) he couldn’t have years ago.
now. what i’ve been screaming for the last week. to put it simply: STEVE WOULD NEVER. steve wouldn’t take peggy’s past away from her. steve wouldn’t leave bucky and sam and his other friends behind after all the hell they’ve been through, after half the population just woke up five years in the future, something he's experienced on a much larger scale. steve could have still given up being captain america. could have said, hey i still wanna do good but i don’t wanna fight aliens and shit anymore and i wanna have a chance to actually live my life. he could have given the shield to sam (okay ik the shield was destroyed at that point but u know what i mean) and that could have been the perfect ending for him, to get his happiness with who and what he still has, to truly make peace with what he’s lost.
and i can’t say all this without getting into bitter stucky territory. the entire fucking captain america trilogy has revolved around steve’s relationship to bucky. protecting bucky, saving him, believing in him when no one else will. he went on that mission in catfa based on the hope that bucky was alive, he lost him when he fell from that train. when steve found out bucky was alive, he gave up fighting him HE DROPPED HIS SHIELD he was willing to die on that helicarrier trying to save bucky, trying to get him to remember. with sam’s help they spent two years trying to find bucky and okay i’m not gonna get into why cacw bugged me that’s not this post but he STILL was trying to keep bucky safe, still believing in bucky, just....everything it’s too much to even put into words what the two of them mean to each other, what they do for each other.
bucky and steve haven’t really had a chance to be back in each other’s lives since cacw. bucky went back into cryo and sure we can assume steve’s visited him since he woke up but steve’s been on the run with sam and nat like........they’ve had very little time together. and steve just lived another five years without bucky AND sam and ditched them immediately? for someone he had a relationship with ten years ago? for someone he obviously was not meant for BECAUSE they DIDN’T end up together because he went down in that plane and she moved on and i’m just!!!
and anyway is bucky really like okay? like i saw that vid where the fan asked about the movie properly ending their story and they totally bullshitted an answer about them being able to be separate or whatever but like they’ve hardly been able to be TOGETHER, they’ve been pulled apart over and over. and like, yes bucky has his life in wakanda and he has sam but we haven’t really seen much of those relationships so we don’t actually know how much that means! steve is the only person who can understand even somewhat what bucky’s been through (obvs other mcu characters know what it’s like to have their minds fucked with whereas steve doesn’t know what that part’s like, but bucky hasn’t interacted with those characters unfortunately) so ya know at least in terms of adjusting to a whole new life after your old one was ripped away, steve’s all he’s got. ofc now other people will get a sense of that, but still. in terms of history, shared life experience, steve and bucky are all each other have.
all bucky and steve share in this movie is an exchange that literally already happened in catfa but in reverse. they couldn’t even give us an original MOMENT. and bucky apparently knew what steve was gonna do which just makes it WORSE, like he just had to accept it and let steve go, let steve be someone else. if they wanted to end steve’s arc properly, it would’ve been about bucky because THAT’S what steve’s whole fucking story has been about, and the writers and directors who literally made steve’s arc that way fucking ignored that bc they’re homophobic (and misogynistic) goodbyeeeee like u cannot deny that tearing bucky and steve apart permanently isn’t a slap in the face to stucky shippers, they’ve been giving less and less since catws when they realized how obviously romantic their story is. it’s just fucking cruel (don’t get me started on using the song from right before steve and bucky’s first interaction in catws for the dance as soon as it started playing i wanted to SCREAM ik it’s possible they didn’t know it was an association with stucky buuuuuut with social media ppl very easily know what the fandom is saying so. who knows it just fucking sucked) to put an end to the stevebucky relationship when they haven’t had a real chance to be together, even as just friends, since catws, and it’s especially cruel to end their relationship THIS WAY
anyway this ending (JUST A FEW MINUTES REALLY) just does a disservice to steve AND peggy AND bucky and their stories and i’m just so disappointed and angry on their behalf. if anyone wants to talk about it to me FEEL FREE as long as you’re not a dick bc i obvs love to commiserate with the fandom over this MESS

Minor criticism, I still feel they didn’t need to do a “Something hours earlier” thing with the train battle, they could’ve easily done the story in sequential order and it would have worked just as well if not better. So Jeansaaa wrote another message and I don't feel like putting too much effort in my answer, because I actually shouldn't give him/her any more attention, but I think I can make things even a bit more clear this time for all other people out here on Tumblr. Also, I blocked him/her now instead, because she/he seems to be incapable of keeping me blocked... I'm gonna talk to him/her, so I'll use "you", because that's more easy and direct then him/her or they.

You first started of by saying (in the title) that you made a response post becasue responding to a re-blog in mobile is hard (smiley included), which is not very important... Then you followed with "for context look at my re-blog below" and thereafter, your message actually started.
Before I copy-paste the first part I'm responding to, I wanna say: use punctuation, dude! Your whole message is like one long sentence with commas.

I just wanna be done with This,  the reason why I texted this 🙃 (the “smiley face”) after I said “don’t worry i’ll block you” is because it was supposed to be passive aggressive, I un-blocked you by accident (because I’m a clumsy mess, and I didn’t even know I un-blocked you until after you private messaged me about it), and I told people to block you, because this kind of stuff can make people incredibly uncomfortable,(and you’re being blatantly homophobic which I’m sure nobody within the lgbtq+ Community would like to see that)
Yeah, I'm glad I decided on blocking you myself! I'm not someone who blocks others. I'm not gonna hide from someone that doesn't share my opinion. Just acting like a little child and press that block button. I'd rather have normal conversations or even discussions like not-little-kids, teens and adults do (that's why I take so much time to explain myself as much as possible), but that blocking-unblocking-blocking-unblocking started to become quite annoying.
Also, I think people can decide for themselves whether they wanna block me or not. We're not all imbeciles, you know? And probably the only reason why people would even go to your blog and see you telling them to block me, is because of me. I hate that nasty habit of you all to make comparisons with racism in discussions with lgbt+ topics. It's not the same! I know it's a filthy trick of yours to pretend like it IS all the same, but I'm not falling for that! I'm NOT a racist! Besides, I didn't say "I'm not homophobic, because I have gay friends". It was just something I added. I did give enough actual reasons for why I'm not homophobic, though.
This time, to even clearify that point MORE (when will I ever be done clearifying myself, hahaha), I'm gonna take that alcohol addicted person (shortening it to: AAP) as an example again. I don't support people to be alcohol addicted. It's their own choice. Imagine if that AAP wants to campaign for allowing drunk people to drive. I'm very much against that. The AAP gives alcohol to his/her children (and might pass the addiction to them). I'm most definitely against that too (because it has impact on the next generation). When he's/she's in the mood, the AAP drinks him-/herself half to death. I find that disgusting. I find it inhuman. I find that this person should work on some self-control over his/her desires! Having all these thoughts about the AAP, still doesn't make me AAP-phobic, though. Because if this person encounters me (in a not drunk state, of course), I will act normally towards him/her. I might tell him/her what I think about the addiction, but I'm not being a hateful person by doing so. I don't show dislike / prejustice against people that are addicted to alcohol (I also don't know why I should have to know about someone's alcohol addiction in the first place). And if the whole world starts to campaign for all AAP's due to an agenda that's been executed and they push it all in my and everyone’s face and I'm against THAT, it STILL doesn't make me AAP-phobic. That would make me AAP-agenda-phobic. Or that would make me changing-the-world-wrongly-phobic. Or altering-general-morality-phobic. Because YES. That IS what I am. I'm not lgbtqabcxyz-phobic, but I'm most certainly against all this brainwashing and mindcontrolling that's happening nowadays. This is what I told someone recently in a similar discussion (it’s “ABC”, the person I still intend to respond to on my blog and I wrote this in our private chat too):

Mary is not that nice hey.
You don’t have to have been tjlc or a johnlocker to assume that Mary was being set up to be a villain. There was no careful analysis of the text needed to come to that very logical conclusion. Like its basic story telling- someone shoots the protagonist, protagonist is shown to be in agony, protagonist actually flat lines, protagonist manages to survive, shooter comes to threaten that they’ll finish the job if protagonist talks, shooter shows no remorse for shooting protagonist…..like sorry at what point was I supposed to assume she was just a woman with a past who is trying to be a better person but just made a bad decision?
Magnussen talks about what a wicked woman she is, Sherlock assumes she is a threat to John (John Watson is definitely in danger) that coupled with Mary showing seemingly no remorse for shooting Sherlock and displaying behaviour that seems pretty clearly to indicate that she only regrets that she got found out and her grip on John/her relationship with John suffered makes for a fairly obvious bad guy setup. You don’t need to look hard or at the subtext to see any of that. The fact that Sherlock saw her as a threat to John and the fact that she came back to threaten Sherlock not to mention her hostility towards Sherlock in the Leinster Gardens scene were what convinced me that Sherlock’s talk about surgery was bullshit and John’s apology was a cover.
I mean my parents are total casual viewers, I don’t make them watch the show, they wait til it airs on free to air tv (which in my country is anywhere from a year to 2 years after the series is released) and they’ve only seen the episodes once. But my dad is that guy who guesses the twists of every movie well before they are revealed, like honestly the amount of times he has spoilt a movie or a whodunnit crime show for me is honestly ridiculous (and so frustrating because he is always right). That moment right before Mary turned around he was like “it will be that other bird” (lol) and she turned around and he was like “yeah her, there you go, I told you” and as soon as Mary shot Sherlock he was like “I bet she is working for that other fella. What’s his name, the bad guy” (he was referring to Moriarty). I didn’t say a thing throughout the episodes to sway their views but they both thought that Mary was going to be revealed to be the villain/working for Moriarty in the following series. My point being that assuming Mary was gonna be the big bad was never about Mary bashing or getting her out of the way of johnlock happening (although that’s not to say that there weren’t/aren’t people who support the idea based on those 2 things), the point is it was a perfectly logical conclusion to come to based on what we were seeing and what the writing/acting was telling us. You didn’t need to be studying wallpapers and musical scores to see that. The idea that she isn’t one of the good guys is not hidden in the subtext, its surface text. Even casual viewers like my parents could see it.
The fact that Moffat and Gatiss have trouble separating Mary from AA doesn’t change that. The fact that Moffat said she “shot him nicely” and that Sherlock forgave her so we should too doesn’t actually make it true when what was unfolding on screen was telling a different story.
I’m sick of seeing the assumption that all johnlockers hate Mary and only wanted her to be a villain so she would get out of the way. Sure some do hate her, and I definitely think her introduction drastically altered the direction and mood of the show. But in TEH and TSOT I was actually really charmed by Mary and in terms of how it related to Johnlock for me it added another layer of angst the pining!sherlock narrative- the fact that Mary wasn’t horrible actually made it all the more harder to see her as a rival and to me that added another heartbreaking layer. I’d always assumed she would be killed off by the end of series 3 or start of series 4 and at the point that Sherlock deduced her pregnancy I assumed he had it wrong- that Mary was actually terminally ill and his ptsd was effecting his ability to read the signs right. So when the assassin plot point came about I loved the direction! The fact that John, who had been manipulated by Sherlock in the past, so deeply affected by the biggest manipulation, was discovering that the woman he married had also lied to and manipulated him was devastating. Everything the surface narrative was telling me was that she was a bad guy, and I loved that. It took an exciting turn and I was so keen to see how it all unravelled in series 4. During TST when (despite making the mistake of shooting Sherlock instead of taking his offer of help the first time) she took off on her round the world jaunt and John made the comment about bugging the usb I was like “right here we go it’s all unfolding now”….because if John had come up with that idea then that meant he and Sherlock had discussed Mary and had already assumed she would bail which to me confirmed that the surgery comment and the xmas apology were staged. Mary’s message at the end of TST sealed the deal for me. So for TLD to take an abrupt left into Saint Mary land I was really confused because that was not what the narrative had been telling me up to that point.
Anyway I got carried away there but what I’m trying to say is, it’s not an exclusively tjlc idea that Mary was a bad guy. You didn’t need to be a johnlocker to accept that the story being told was that she wasn’t on the side of the angels. It’s also possible to be a fan of Mary and support the reading of her as a villain. I feel like so many on team Mary-was-good-all-along are just there because they hate tjlcand/or johnlock and because the “theory” of villain Mary is popular among tjlcers and johnlockers. But my point is you don’t have to be into meta or analysing the show to conclude that Mary isn’t nice, the surface narrative told us enough. And that surface narrative was being told regardless of whether Moffat intended it or not, it will still be a perfectly reasonable surface reading no matter how much Moffat prattles on about her not being a villain or shooting Sherlock “nicely”.
