I do agree with Taliesin that the mighty nein is the closest thing they’ve had to an evil campaign, not because of how close the individual pcs were to their respective darker paths, but because as a party they always always did what they wanted. They were always acting on their own initiative, and that’s what you would see in a campaign of villains. Agency is key!

it's 2025 and orihime is still my favorite bleach character ever because of just. everything she is, all of it. from the very first peek we get into her life, we learn that she's so fundamentally unlikeable that even her parents despise her (a literal baby), and this pattern repeats yet again into middle school, where she falls victim to bullying. her own brother turns into a monster and resents her for trying to bounce back from grief. everything she does is wrong. even from a meta standpoint, orihime has never been widely liked, and even when she has, it's sometimes followed by a disclaimer or an 'i like her, BUT-" which is soooo congruent to how she is in canon as well? in a way, perhaps, no other bleach character is? what she is and goes through in-universe is exactly what she is and goes through out in the real world as well. of course, in canon as well as outside of it, there has always been a small group of people who fiercely love her too (in-universe, it's her friends, and outside it's...well. it's us, those of us who love her). but the point is. i've never seen a character who is so meta in her existence, who is always going through things on a double-layer - how other characters respond to her in the story vs how fans respond to her in their discourse. there's no separation from Orihime The Character (as she exists in text) and Orihime The Topic (the discussions we have about her as a character). there is a certain type of bleach fan who is a loly and menoly equivalent in the real world, there is a certain type of bleach fan who is a shishigawara/kon equivalent in the real world, there is a certain type of bleach fan who is an ulquiorra, challenging her worldviews, pushing her into corners to prove herself, and of course, there is a tatsuki or an ichigo, fighting for our lives defending her and it's just. so interesting. it makes orihime more real, more grounded to me than any other bleach character. how characters respond to her in the story is often EXACTLY how people respond to her in real life. plenty of times, we've gotten to see characters' inner thoughts and their POVs, but we haven't gotten much insight into the ways other characters see them, how they're perceived by several other characters, but orihime is. she is so discussed (BOTH by the other bleach characters, AND the fans), and the diversity of these discussions is so present too. her powers, her love life, her flaws, her personality,,,,,all of it is a major part of the storyline, as WELL as the discourse. it's inescapable. SHE is inescapable.

been watching person of interest and it really is rife with 'living weapon sees himself as a stray rabid dog (derogatory) and those who love him see him as their guard dog (affectionate)' metaphors

will and mike when they first met: i’m not the only one who’s lonely
will and mike in season 1: i’m not the only freak
will and mike in season 2: i’m not the only one who feels crazy
will and mike in season 3: i’m not the only one struggling to survive puberty and figure out who i am if i’m not a kid anymore
will and mike in season 4: i’m not the only one who’s afraid to be honest with people about my feelings
will and mike in season 5: i’m not the only one who’s gay and in love with my best friend???!?

Edward watching as Gordon goes from naive young greenhorn who always fell for his pranks to the meanest egotistical asshole he's ever met. Watching as his friend's insecurity and inferiority complex get so bad it warps him into the worst person he can be. Watching him drift away and distance himself from him because that's what his fears told him to do. That's what every other engine on the mainland would do. Watching Henry follow him, becoming snobbish and catty so he can stay close to him. Their little trio that he thought was unbreakable bend and almost snap at the seams
And despite everything, still being kind and friendly and affectionately bullying him like he used to because he knows somewhere deep down that young greenhorn is still in there. His friend is still there he just changed. And no amount of change will stop him from being his friend. And holding out hope that one day Gordon will remember that. He and Henry always held out hope that Gordon would change for the better. They still stuck by him even when he was cruel to them because he was their friend and like hell they're leaving him behind. How inherently tragic yet hopeful that is.
And it worked. And he changed, this time for the better. And no doubt the big blue felt awful about it later in life, hiding that shame and guilt under his arrogant bravado. Because he thinks it's too late to give an apology, and he's too scared of what might happen if he does. He will never know that they already forgave him. And he will never understand why they would in the first place.
They are the golden trio because, despite the years of harshness and turmoil they all went through. They never rusted and still shine to this day. No amount of change will ever erode their friendship.

so we've spent the past three months writing MelloNear daily, and we've worked on enough different pieces in that time that i now have some Thoughts as to the narrative purposes they each tend to serve in our own works (this is not. about canon though i suppose it DERIVES from their canon dynamic. this is very much about how we personally play with the blorbos)
by and large Mello serves to drive the plot, regardless of the position he is put in within the universe. we don't even have to actively be trying to do anything with him -- even in our more Near-centric pieces, as long as Mello is present? his emotions, whims, wants are what shapes the trajectory of the story, his emotional beats are the beats that drive the plot forward. he feels, he impulses, he injects stuff into the sequence of events. things happen because Mello wants them to (or pushes Near to make them happen if/when he himself cannot).
meanwhile Near is much less of a driving force for the plot and more of a reflective force for the story. he isn't IRRELEVANT to the plot, he doesn't do NOTHING, but most of what he does from a plot progression standpoint is reactive. like, he acts not because of an inner drive, not based on his own wants or needs, but largely when his circumstances require action of him. (by circumstances i don't just mean Plot Events. sometimes what he reacts to are his own emotions, like in sweet atonement, when they are so overwhelming that he cannot put them aside to strategise effectively anymore -- the keyword here being "effectively", because even then his first response will still often be to try to strategise.) by and large what Near does do is provide space for reflection, for thought, for analysis. things happen to him, or through him, and he thinks about them a bunch, and he'd leave it at that if Mello wasn't pushing him.
so they make for super neat storytelling when you figuratively drop them together in a jar and shake them around, because it's like. Mello pushes Near into action Near wouldn't take on his own; and then Near adds weight to Mello's direction, provides a deeper sense of spacetime, fleshes out the places where Mello takes him that Mello wouldn't necessarily stop at or consider on his own. like at their core, in the way we write their dynamic, Mello Does and Near Is. and mixing them up, you get: all of the essential elements for a compelling story!
and obviously im not like, talking in absolutes, none of this is true 100% of the time or the only possible reading of them, nuance exists etc etc. but that's the general trends we're starting to notice in our own MelloNear writing over the past few months

between Dread continuing from a game on GBA (and really every game prior to that too) and Prime 4 continuing from 2 games on GameCube and Original DS, Metroid has the longest narrative endurance of any multi-creator series I've ever seen. Threads left in stasis decades ago when the series was shelved picked right back up once development resumes—an entire generation of developers later—like nothing ever happened
