return of the return of the wednesday reading meme?
So it turns out that trying to read when I’m on a writing bender is...actually fairly hard? It’s almost like working on a story between six and fourteen hours a day doesn’t leave me much time for...well, much of anything. But that fic is done, and holiday stuff is pretty much finished, so here we go again! We’ll see how long I last this time.
What I’ve just finished reading
Tender Morsels, by Margo Lanagan. I’ve been thinking a lot about story structure lately, in part because it’s something I’ve been aiming to have more of in my work, so this was a fascinating read in part because it didn’t follow a traditional structure at all. Or, really, you could almost argue that it’s the reverse of a traditional structure—where in a Hero’s Journey-style story you have the inciting incident that sends the main character out into the world to be forever changed, here you have a victimized teenage girl responding to further trauma by literally withdrawing into her safe, comfortable fantasy world and staying there for decades while she raises her two daughters. I appreciated that the story largely treated this choice with empathy; while she’s upbraided by one character later on for her selfishness in not allowing her daughters to experience the real world until they’re grown, most of the others are thoroughly understanding—and the price she pays ends up being a quiet and personal one rather than the Epic Potentially World-Ending Catastrophe that most Western storytelling would demand. There’s a lot to chew over in this story, about the effects of trauma, and culture, and how to make existing as a disempowered person bearable.
If I had one complaint about it it’d probably be that the story treats the “real” world’s brutally patriarchal culture as an inevitability, something that can’t be fought directly, but only undermined covertly, through magic and other hidden means. I guess I have just enough of my mother’s crusader tendencies to want to say “forget that, we can do better”...but power dynamics are forever a tricky thing to alter, and from the perspective of the main characters, there’s really not that much they can do; it’s something of a triumph even to learn to exist within it.
(Thanks again to @introvertia for sending me this, it’s given me lots to think about!)
What I’m currently reading
Gideon the Ninth, by Tamsyn Muir. I’m almost through the audiobook, and hoo boy have I been enjoying it. The author and the narrator both are doing a bang-up job in helping my brain keep the large ensemble cast straight—every character has a distinct personality and voice, and the ways they bounce off each other are eminently believable. Gideon, with her irreverent attitude and occasional brilliance, and Harrowhawk, with her continual brilliance and equivalent insufferability, continue to be one of my favorite fictional pairings; even once they start to trust each other somewhat, their chemistry is just phenomenal. The worldbuliding I’m a little fuzzier on, but the characters are so propulsive that I’ve been more than willing to just go with it. And given that they’re basically acolytes of a mysterious and claustrophobic religious order that requires absolute faith from its adherents, to a degree it works that the origins are mysterious, even if I occasionally find myself wondering about practicalities like “okay, so, who exactly maintains the shuttles? And the atmosphere processors? And grows the food? And who’re they fighting in this mysterious war that’s only occasionally mentioned...?“ I’ll be interested to see if she expands on that in the further books.
What I plan to read next
To be honest, I have no idea. I may well just pick up something from one of the piles of books around my house—God knows I have enough of them, haha.
Fanfiction Spotlight
This week I want to point out Solus, Soulless, Solace by Blake (@newleafover on tumblr). I’ve often thought that the soulless version of Sam we meet in Season 6 of Supernatural is one of those opportunities practically tailor-made for fanfic—the direction they took him in the show worked fine, but there’s just so much potential for exploration there, especially with Sam’s internality. What does the world look like, to a human being without a soul? How does his inability to feel emotion change how he relates to his loved ones, and especially to the one person his life revolves around? And without the ability to love, what is it that keeps him so tied to Dean?
Blake uses the opportunity to present an unrelentingly crystalline portrait of trauma-induced functional depression, where habit and careful consideration carries you through most of the motions of your life but you’re acutely aware that your usual breadth and depth of emotional experience is just—gone. Further, they write it in second person, unusual for a non-reader-insert fic but powerful in that it strips away that layer of insulation. And damn if it isn’t 100% effective. I happened to come across it after a week that had involved more than a little emotional heavy lifting; reading it was like going outside during a sunny eighteen-degree day when all my muscles were sore. It felt therapeutic, if only in the sense of “oh, right, this is why I’m doing all this painful internal work, so I don’t end up here again.”

Gods, this took 3 years to do. I started this OC when Season 3 of BNHA began in, like, 2018. I ended up constantly tweaking her and forgot to touch her in 2019. Then came 2021, where season 5 is about to go down and wreck me so without further ado, here is Rune Byougen!
(Credit to Sakimii of DeviantArt for the background)
Character Information
Name: Rune Byougen
Gender: Female
Age: 15 (Episode 4/Chapter 3 & 4)
Birthday: October 30
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual
Occupation: Student
Height: 5’8
Weight: 135 lbs
Ethnicity: Afro-Asian
School: U.A. High School
Year: First year
Hero Name: The Placebo Hero: Bacteriune
Appearance
Hair Color: Dark Blue
Hair Type: Shoulder length hair on the right and short hair on the left. Hair on the left is put in a ponytail
Distinguishing Features: Surgery scar between clavicles
Eye Color: Purple
Skin Color: Bronze
Background
Born with sickle cell anemia, Rune’s adolescence has been defined by consistent hospital stays and minimal experiences. Despite this, she remained optimistic for her future; this is due in part to the constant support from her parents, Takao (who also has sickle cell anemia) and Camilla (a pro-Hero in America known as Wyvern).
During her pre-teen years, her condition would worsen; prompting a great deal of surgeries. It had become so dour that Rune considered giving up after finding out she would be missing her final year in junior high so she could remain in the hospital. During this depression, her father made it a point to emphasize the strength of perseverance and hope for a better future. Through his corny speeches, Rune found some solace and promised to keep fighting for her family.
The age of 12 would mark an important new chapter for Rune: her condition improved greatly which allowed her live independently with minor treatment, her quirk would finally manifest, she could resume schooling, and she had a clear goal for her life, choosing to find better treatment for those dealing with sickle cell anemia. Unfortunately, the biggest change in her life would be the death of her father at the end of the year. After reaching the average life expectancy, Takao had succumb to the illness after being rushed to the hospital after a stroke.
Unable to process the grief, Rune grew to resent her father; seeing his sudden death as not living by the values he set for her during her tribulations. Optimism gave way to pessimism as Rune became more jaded about her circumstances, her future, and her understanding of the world. For the first time in her life, she saw physical limitations that couldn’t be overcome with willpower, she saw a society that had largely forgotten non-quirk related illness and death.
From that day forward, she choose a new path: Uncover all the mysteries medical science had to offer to overcome her limits. On that day, Rune vowed not to succumb to illness or weakness. To see that vow through, she needed to find a way to overcome the natural weakness she was born with. To do this, she would need authority in different fields and money. She would need to be a hero.
Hero work could finance her research, the potential fame would make it easier to join medical projects and resources for research, and hero work could give her access to underground and taboo information not legally accessible. With her family moving to Japan to live with her paternal grandparents, the option of attending U.A. becomes obvious. She spoke with her mother about her desire to become a hero. Camilla, a well-known hero throughout the United States, used her connections to get her admitted with a recommendation. After training her quirk for a year, Rune is prepared to enter U.A. where her next chapter begins...
Personality
A box of intriguing mysteries or a miserable pile of secrets, whichever you choose, Rune qualifies. At first glance, Rune is a calm and ever-curious mind that operates with cordiality. Once the layers are peeled, that cordial and inviting exterior disappears, leaving a more cunning and antagonistic yet dignified and relax individual. At her best, she can be seen as a calming, loyal yet malignant girl who is hard to understand yet fun to be around. At her worst, Rune is a manipulative and inimical girl hiding behind pleasantries. A girl who seeks to unravel all those around her as a hobby
Likes: Herbology, Grimoires, Tarot Cards, Card Games, Botany, Medieval History, Camping, Anarchy
Dislikes: The cold, Paranormal romance novels, Crystal balls, Cosmetology
Habits: Biting her nails, Staring at people
Fears: Relapsing, Abandonment, Porcelain dolls, Limitations
Quirk and Abilities
Quirk: Pathogen
This quirk allows the user to control and manipulate bacteria and pathogens found throughout different environments and bodies. Using neuro-parasitology, the user’s dead skin cells are consumed by the microorganisms, giving the user full control of all bacteria and pathogens for approximately an hour
Quirk Advantages:
Due to bacteria being on every natural surface imaginable, there is no limit to the range of the user
In addition, when the quirk is active, the amount of bacteria present on the body can form a light layer of protection on the body without the bacteria hardening into a solid structure
In warm conditions or against heat-based quirks, the bacteria can be more effective and multiply quickly
Quirk Drawbacks:
Quirk overuse can result in the user losing control of the bacteria and pathogens. When it under direct control, those organisms can become very ensnared with the user’s skin cells and seek to consume them en masse. If not careful, the bacteria can attempt to consume so much of the cells, that the epidermis can be damaged, leaving wounds equitable to first degree burns
This quirk is at a natural disadvantage in colder environments as common bacteria thrives primarily in warmer environments. Extreme weather (hot or freezing) is disadvantageous as well
Overexertion can result in a minor case of chronic inflammation which includes fever, rashes, infection, abdominal pain, and chest pains
Fighting Style: Wyvern-style Martial Arts Created and used solely by her mother, it is a personalized form of martial arts that emphasizes brute force over speed by transferring all the power and force to a specific limbs. When utilized correctly, a simple kick can break a concrete wall. However, the style sacrifices speed, accuracy, and leaves other limbs defenseless. It also requires very specific stances to work properly. The style originated from Camilla who uses it to dispatch larger villains and wrestle Wai, a family friend that lost her humanity and became a large wyvern due to her quirk
Weapons/Items: Vials of poison and medication Most of the poisons are meant to hinder movement, allowing her to fight with minimal opposition. This is beneficial for using wyvern-style martial arts without issue. The medication is penicillin and various antibiotics Rune has created to combat her drawbacks.

Relationships
Family:
Camilla Byougen - Mother Takao Byougen - Father (Deceased) In the past, the relationship between the Byougen family could only be described as loving and tight. Despite her work, Camilla was dedicated and active in the family, enjoying doting on her husband and daughter. Takao was no exception, spending much his days looking after Rune and Camilla as a stay-at-home-dad. Rune admired her parent’s strength of character and they served as emotional crutch to a child that didn’t have much in terms of socialization. Times have changed. Rune has come to loathe the type of person her father was, deeming him a hypocrite. However, her relationship with her mother is stronger than ever. The two look after each other and are quite open with one another. If not for the age disparity, one could mistake the mother-daughter duo as sisters
Wai - Godmother Despite being a late addition to the family, Wai and Rune’s relationship is solid. Wai may have lost much of her mental capacities after fully becoming a wyvern, however, she still remembers the love and loyalty she had for Camilla and that has transferred fully to her daughter. The two are very protective of one another and enjoy training together. Since Camilla is needed to communicate verbally with Wai, the two don’t have many secrets or intense conversations, but that doesn’t stop the two from greatly enjoying conversation and each other's company
Kirika Byougen - Paternal Grandmother Fuga Byougen - Paternal Grandfather This familial dynamic is a tad bit complicated. Although there is clear love between them, there is also veiled hostility laced in every interaction. While a mystery to Camilla, Rune has concluded that the negative interactions stem from Fuga and Kirika being upset with Takao for abandoning his home and former life to chase after Camilla. While her grandparents are trying to overcome that distaste for Camilla and Rune so they can fully embrace the family Takao made, they are hindered by the grief of his death and past pains of his abandonment. Despite this, interactions between Rune and her grandparents are amicable. That is until Rune begins to read their motives and taunt them.
Friends:
Bakugou Katsuki - Close friend & most proficient teammate Tooru Hagakure - Close friend Kyouka Jiro Reiko Yanagi Midoriya Izuku - Test Subject
Rivals:
Fumikage Tokoyami - Friendly rival Tenya Iida - Antagonistic
Enemies:
Toga Himiko
Trivia
Rune’s faovrite food is mitarashi dango
Rune was born in California
Rune prefers hiding her quirk simply to mess with her opponents, tricking them into believing her quirk is simply super strength
Rune is a Wiccan

1. as far as im concerned Kagami never left at the end of last game, that was an extended dream sequence... 2. i also totally agree with you that Kagami is prolly vers, if anything, and it was also MY PET PEEVE when people pinholed him into being a forever bottom at the peak of knb hype. 3. you keep teasing your long list of ships for Aomine PLEASE do him for the character thing lol. So far all your opinions are sending me into a realm of GOOD VALID VIBES
Omg thank you!! (I agree end of Last Game is not canon… or if it is he came right back the next year or smth I refuse to accept he just left forever. And I’m really glad to see the problem of Uke™ Kagami seems to be in decline these days… fewer people are writing for knb in general, but those that are seem to have an idea what a real gay relationship is or at least make him a fucking person and not a walking stereotype, and that’s encouraging to see).
Also thanks so much for sending Aomine! …Strap in for this character essay tho I’ve been known to never shut up about this boy once you get me started.
How I feel about this character
I honestly… can’t even explain it anymore or even try to justify it but Aomine has had a bigger impact on me than, I think, any other character I’ve seen to date. I don’t even know what it is, I do relate to him (and project on him *cough*) but like, there are other characters out there that I have more in common with, and I like his whole arc and aesthetic but it’s nothing revolutionary, so… your guess is as good as mine.
Whatever it is, I’ve been obsessed with this guy for over half a decade, and lately even as the KNB fandom falls into decline, my feelings are not they’re just getting stronger. His development over the course of the series is one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever seen, (that one bit at the end of the Touou/Seirin game with “I want to practice” and his later conversation with Kuroko hit me in the fucking chest every time), and I love how even though he’s portrayed as cold, uncaring and rude, it’s still understood (at least by anyone with some nuance) that that’s not what he’s supposed to be like, and underneath the distant, kind of dickish front, he’s hurting a lot. I’ve talked about the degree to which he cares about people before too, but I still have to give a mention to the ferocious level of protectiveness this guy has for his friends. I could go on about him for ages, tbh, and maybe someday I will write a for-real structured essay to try to get it out there, but the bottom line is I love this character, I have for a long time, and likely will continue to do so long into the future.
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Okay here we go… I ship this guy extremely liberally, even with people he’s never interacted with (hell you could mention any random character and I could probably see my way clear to shipping them with him somehow, I’ll still try to explain my logic if I can). Prepare yourself.
Kagami (of course, AoKaga is the OTP and definitely the one I’ve devoted the most time to, they’re just the best together I’ll never get tired of seeing them figure their shit out over and over)
Kuroko (I may be AoKaga on main, but I’m still such a sucker for the tragic romance between these two, and sometimes it just hits me over the head like a sledgehammer how much I love their relationship. I’ve also got a lot of feelings for AoKagaKuro, they’re such a perfect trio and I need to invest more of my time in the OT3)
Kise (I was a bit late to the game on AoKise, but I definitely see it now. I love their dynamic and how imperfect their relationship would probably be, the complexity of it. sign me up)
Momoi (I don’t see a lot of AoMomo love anymore, but I’ve still got a soft spot for it, childhood friends are my weakness okay)
Midorima (they’re so different but that’s what makes it interesting, and I love the idea of neither of them knowing how to show/tell the other their feelings and being awkward stubborn shits together)
Murasakibara (they almost never interact but I just think they’d have such a soft cuddly relationship and be really chill together… lazy Sunday mornings sleeping in and hanging all over each other that kinda thing)
Akashi (kinda same as Akashi/Kagami, I think the difference between polished upper-class Akashi and scrappy city boy Aomine would be hella interesting… though I’ve also got some angst ideas for them as a couple, after how things went down at Teiko… abandonment and whatnot)
Imayoshi (I got pulled into this ship HARD by Lysapadin’s A Firm Hand series and now it’s no longer a guilty pleasure ship and is actually something I’ll talk about in the open, just… the power dynamic fuck me up)
Sakurai (I fuckin love the idea of an anxious Sakurai crushing hard on Aomine and not knowing how to tell him but when he finally plucks up the courage and prepares himself for imminent death Aomine’s actually pretty chill about it… plus they’d be adorable together tbh)
Wakamastu (you know it’s gotta be enemies to lovers. not just bc I’m intrigued by the love/hate relationship itself but if you look past the attitude issues these two would actually probably have a lot in common. also I’m really interested in how their dynamic might change with Wakamatsu being captain and all)
Susa (idk but there’s one throwaway line in season 3 where Imayoshi says about Aomine “actually maybe he likes you” and that’s enough for me. bring me the rarest rarepair my body is ready)
Kasamatsu (it wasn’t supposed to be SERIOUS but they got me. That moment in the Touou/Kaijo game where Aomine helps him up and “you’ve really done it now, senpai” is legit, plus these two would be such a good-looking couple, honestly.)
Mibuchi (give me the pretty boys. I have no excuse for this except maybe their interactions in my own damn fic again)
Nebuya (sometimes shipping can be as simple as hey I want them to bang right. also they’re both humongous dorks under their respective rough exteriors and I love them)
Moriyama (they bond over liking girls at first and then they’re simultaneously like wait a minute… more Touou/Kaijo ships pls)
Nijimura (I have this idea of them reuniting late into/after high school and Aomine still calls him captain out of habit and Nijimura’s like relieved and impressed to see how he’s developed since the mess at Teiko)
Himuro (they Never interact but they’d be so Petty and Snarky sign me up)
Haizaki (twisted, but I’m interested it’d be so unhealthy and awful bring it)
Hanamiya (even more twisted tbh but there is that moment where Aomine confronts him… and I’m here for hate sex just as much as your typical romance)
Inoue (who, you ask? I know he’s such a side character and no one remembers him, but he’s a big reason for Aomine’s downfall at Teiko and they seemed to be buddies before that, I’d be interested in some kind of reconciliation between them, or a romance, ya know whatever works)
And then we get into crossover territory… MOST of these are not my fault they’re just things I’ve seen and adopted for myself
Kuroo Tetsurou (someone made a moodboard for them, and now I can’t stop thinking about them in a relationship, like damn… it’d be such a beautiful mess I wanna see more of it)
Oikawa Tooru (I’ve seen art, and also the light. These two damaged angsty prodigies, one sharp as a whip the other dumb as bricks, but both of them sassy and nerdy as hell. I could see myself getting addicted to this ship if I took the time to write it out, and I just might)
Yamazaki Sousuke (can’t lie, they look good together. I’ve seen more than one art piece of them interacting and I have a Mighty Need.)
Matsuoka Rin (angry lonely talented boys finding solace in each other’s company? you know that’s my shit. also shark teeth and cop AUs hells yeah.)
Tanaka Ryuunosuke (I don’t know where the fuck this idea came from but I thought of Tanaka trying to pick a fight with “shitty boi” Aomine while in Tokyo and then losing his shit and here we are)
Terushima Yuuji (this one is purely physical… they pretty, I have no other reason, but also this absolute fuckboy, these two would be such a train wreck and I’m here for it tbh)
Yachi Hitoka (okay picture this Giant Terrifying basketball player trying to be less giant and terrifying to tiny shy Yachi and tell me you don’t just want to see that happen. I get Legosi/Haru vibes.)
I’ll spare you the rest of the ideas I’ve tossed around, because past this point it becomes pure crack (if it hasn’t already) but you get the idea. Throw a character my way and I can probably talk myself into it that’s the power this guy has over me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
My non-romantic OTP for this character
K considering the List… it shouldn’t be surprising that I also consider this person a romantic candidate, but you know when it comes to non-romantic OTP it’s gotta be Momoi. Platonic or romantic, the way she’s stuck with him all those years and his obvious protectiveness and love for her and how (even though he claims to like big tits) he never even once starts to objectify her in any way, it’s so important to me. Momoi is Aomine’s redeeming factor when he’s at his worst, and she goes to bat for him even while he’s actively trying to shake her off and still tries to protect and help him when he refuses to accept it, even when it means they fight. (Also Kuroko saying “Aomine’s probably looking for you” after their argument puts to mind Aomine running through the rain calling Momoi’s name and that is just… pure). These two have the kind of unshakable long-standing friendship that’ll probably last them the rest of their lives, and no matter what context or form it takes, I can’t get enough of it.
My unpopular opinion about this character
I’ve harped on enough about the fandom’s portrayal of Aomine as a one-note asshole who doesn’t care before, so let’s see if I can change gears a little bit here.
I honestly don’t agree with… the persistent idea people seem to have of Aomine being a narcissist or obsessed with himself? Like yeah, he’s self-absorbed and egotistical, no question, this is not to say he hasn’t got those flaws and others besides… but that’s not the same as being like, physically attracted to yourself. Part of me suspects it was a “the only one who can fuck me is me” joke taken too far, so that now the idea of Aomine being in love with himself is just ingrained into the fanon culture, but if you look at the show itself, personally I don’t see it. If anything, I would think he’d have some self-loathing issues to work through (and that’s part of the reason he gave for skipping practice, he doesn’t want to be the way he is, and specifically says he doesn’t want to increase the difference between him and everyone else). But hey, that’s just my opinion. I’ll get off my soapbox now.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
I mean he says he and Kagami are postponing their match, after their brief one-on-one when he gives him the shoes, and then we never get to see it… Tbh just more street ball with this guy would be great, since it’s what his whole style is based around. Even if he’s just playing by himself… or hell, maybe since he thinks no one at the high school level can beat him, we could get a scene of him trying to go up against adults. Maybe he still beats them and his despair worsens after that, but then it’d have more meaning, and at least we’ll have seen that he’s tried and is not just giving up before he’s seen all of what he could be up against in the future. Plus, picturing Aomine going five-on-one like Haizaki did against grown-ups and still slaughtering them is something I’d pay money to see.

Survivor 5 Best Changes Made Since The First Season (& The 5 Worst)
Right after the turn of the century, Mark Burnett and Jeff Probst combined to give America it's 'first' reality show contest, and it still kicks on to today. While Survivor is no longer a television juggernaut like it was, it maintains a respectable audience of devoted fans who love watching people get progressively dirtier for 39 days—both physically and strategically.
The contestant's strategies have evolved through the years and the game has attempted to stay ahead of them at every turn, resulting in several changes throughout the show's lifespan. Some of these changes were to the central contest, but others are to the television presentation, while still others were to the format and advantages in play. It still resembles the contest as it was originally presented, but there's a deep history of tweaks and twists that fans have adored and abhorred in their wake.
RELATED: Survivor: The 10 Biggest Challenge Beasts (Ranked by Individual Immunity Wins)
10 10: Worst - The Outcast Tribe
One of the problems with a show like this is that great 'characters' often get voted out early. The Outcast Tribe of Survivor: Pearl Islands was the show's first major attempt to rectify this.
Unknown to the remaining players, the ones they'd voted out continued separately and ultimately were able to vote some of their numbers back into the game. Due to the unspecified circumstances of the Outcasts conditions, the remaining players not knowing this was coming, and the added advantage of being immune for an additional Tribal Council, this was seen as massively unfair.
Opinion has softened over time, but essentially teleporting players who 'lost' into the middle of a game where constant tension has been applied to everyone else is questionable at best.
9 Best: Edge Of Extinction
Redemption Island 4.0 seems to have finally gotten the 'save cool players from elimination' twist right. Making a Survivor's final elimination a matter of willpower rather than a carnival game of chance gave this twist the spice it needed.
Eliminated survivors were marooned on an island separate from the game with little to no aid or contact. If they couldn't hack it, they literally raised the white flag/sail and were gone. Their only action available was to await chances to re-enter the game against each other. Once in the middle of the game, and once near the end. It produced both a powerhouse player and the eventual winner, lending credibility without seeming to favor them directly.
RELATED: Survivor Is Starting Casting Calls for Season 41 & 42
8 Worst - The Final Four Fire
Plenty of fans cried conspiracy when this alternate elimination came into play. Season 35's Ben Driebergen had gotten himself into a difficult corner. He looked destined to be voted out by the others who knew he'd win if he made it to the end. That knowledge is essentially a death sentence in Survivor and had been for dozens of seasons by that point.
Then, suddenly they couldn't vote him out when the opportunity arose. This was because he and another would be going head-to-head in a fire-making challenge instead. Whether it was brought in to keep an audience favorite from going home with a whimper or was always planned so the finale had someone who 'earned/fought' their way in, fans debate its legitimacy.
7 Best: A Million Little Idols
A way for players to save themselves from a vote, but only if they intuit the right moment to do so? Hell yeah! This is the perfect blend of strategy, gut-instinct, bluffing and boasting that makes Survivor great.
Idols have been so well received by contestants and fans that it has appeared in every season since it's inception in Guatemala. They've been hidden requiring precise steps to find like a treasure, scattered around the camp, snuck into challenges, and put everywhere the show can think of to heighten the drama. They're renowned for a good reason and won't be going anywhere.
RELATED: Survivor’s 40th Season Including 20 Former Winners, $2 Million Prize
6 Worst: Except For Those Other Idols
The idols that could be played after all votes were read were too overpowered and made a person nigh-invincible for the remainder of the game. The initial Idol worked more like you'd won an immunity challenge and kept people from voting for you at all. In both cases, it required too much coordination from the remaining players to overcome. Thus, holding onto those idols had players walking through the game threatening to play them at every turn.
This stunted the dynamic social game Survivor is meant to be. They've thankfully been rarities since the 'vote negating' Idol became the norm.
5 Best: Tribe Swap/3 Tribe Splits
In earlier seasons, it wasn't uncommon for one tribe to dominate proceedings. This lead to them heading into the merge with 'the numbers.' The show cleverly caused some wrinkles to that safe (aka boring) situation by mixing things up. Some seasons have begun with (or temporarily split tribes into) 3 groups instead of 2. This strategically allows smaller teams to band together to overthrow dominant factions.
The Tribe Swap variant is now in every season and also improves the overall game. It ensures no one can simply ride early success without the possibility of having their allies removed from them or them from their allies. Both elements also increase the likelihood of lesser contestants finding their feet in the game and their voice for the show.
4 Worst: Unbalanced Or Pointless
Survivor has been tempted at various times to experiment. Sometimes, that is in ways where the outcome proves the experiment wasn't worth it in the first place.
For instance, in Fiji, tribes were split between the 'Haves and Have-nots' where one group lived in relative luxury to the other. Surprise surprise, the tribe with the advantage dominated early.
In Nicaragua, the Medallion Of Power flumped into the game. Tribes could 'play' the medallion to gain challenge advantages. It became an almost instant afterthought and was retired relatively quickly, never to be seen again. Essentially, anything that makes one appearance and never returns in subsequent seasons falls into this category.
3 Best: High-Risk vs. High Reward Advantages
It could be argued that there are too many 'shenanigans' on Survivor. These are balanced just right to be worth it. There have been several types that work in this way. Advantages that require dropping out of an Immunity Challenge to receive. Advantages where other players will know you have it, but not know it's specific details. Clues that tell you of an Idol hidden in plain sight that you will need to be bold to go after.
These types create great tension within the show without unfairly tipping the balance. Survivor often experiments with variations on this core concept, hoping to catch players unaware without completely upending their game-knowledge.

2 Worst: Schoolyard Pick Double Elimination
Sometimes, Survivor instantly realizes when they've hatched a dud, and this was it. At the very beginning of Survivor: Palau, two contestants, one guy and one girl, were forced to pick from the currently unsorted mass of players. From this, they'd form the two tribes, swapping genders at each pick. Ok, so far. Then, the final man and woman unpicked were unceremoniously sent home. That was it. Wanda and Johnathan were simply gone, and any investment in them was snuffed.
It was unfair, unfitting of the game, and left a bad feeling in fans and contestants alike. The only small solace to this misstep is that in future seasons when Jeff has instituted situations where some players may be left out, there is legitimate tension. Nevertheless, they've rightly never revisited this.
1 Worst/Best? (Depends On Who You Ask): 'Edgic'
'Edgic' is a term hardcore Survivor fans came up with where they get into the depths of discussing how the show and contestants are presented. Portmanteau-ing 'editing' and 'logic' together, the theory is that examination of someone's weight of television time and type can 'predict' each season's likely outcomes. Whether they're shown in favorable, foolish, or an antagonistic light, you can 'know' their destiny well in advance.
Early seasons didn't skew as far in tipping their hands. Seasons like Survivor Samoa, Cagayan, and Redemption Island had a single player dominate the game and show entirely. Latter seasons have seemingly taken this fan phenomenon into account and attempted to lessen the obviousness. This has resulted in more well-rounded contestant showings and better critical reception, more like the original layout but sharper. Either way, it's an element of meta-analysis that undermines the show for some, yet totally makes it for others.

March Book Review: Hunted
Hunted
By: Meagan Spooner
Release Date: March 14, 2017
*Beware: Spoilers Ahead!*
Official Synopsis:
Beauty knows the Beast’s forest in her bones—and in her blood.
She knows that the forest holds secrets and that her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering them.
But Yeva’s grown up far from her father’s old lodge, raised to be part of the city’s highest caste of aristocrats. Still, she’s never forgotten the feel of a bow in her hands, and she’s spent a lifetime longing for the freedom of the hunt.
So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronesses…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman.
But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance.
Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts the strange Beast back into his own territory—a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of creatures Yeva’s heard about only in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin—or salvation.
Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?
My Synopsis:
Beauty used to live for the hunt, for the feel of the forest in her bones, in her soul. She used to know the forest’s secrets almost as well as her father, the only hunter who had ever been close to learning the truth of the woods.
Although Yeva left the forest and her nickname behind a long time ago, she yearns for her days in the wilderness. There she can truly be herself, the hunter more comfortable tracking her prey with a bow in her hand than playing the role of an aristocrat or agreeing to marry a man she barely knows.
When her father’s fortune is lost, Yeva gets her wish to return to the forest of her childhood. But her joy may have come at the cost of her father’s sanity, and when he goes missing, it’s up to Yeva to hunt down the creature of her father’s stories, the one he’d claimed was hunting him in his final days.
Leaving her sisters under the care of her eager fiancé, Yeva enters the forest in search of the Beast, but what she discovers is more than she could’ve imagined: an endless winter, a ruined castle, a hidden world of fairy tales come to life, and a man under a terrible curse. A curse that could give Yeva everything she’s ever wanted—or lead to her destruction.
When the magic is cleared, will both be left standing, or will Beauty kill the Beast?
My Thoughts:
Beauty and the Beast is one of my all-time favorite fairy tales. The first movie I ever saw in theaters was the Disney animated version of the film, and although I don’t remember it myself, my mother likes to tell the story of how I, eagerly awaiting the movie and clearly not understanding previews, repeatedly complained, “That’s not Beauty and the Beast” until the film finally started. She also likes to tell how I rather loudly exclaimed, “They wuv each other!” when Belle and the human Beast finally kissed.
Needless to say, Beauty and the Beast was a story that held a special place in my heart from the very beginning, and it remains there to this day. And while I never get tired of watching the animated film or listening to the soundtrack, I’m a reader at heart, so I’m always on the search for a good Beauty and the Beast-related tale. Yes, there’s the original tale, but that’s only so long, and it doesn’t provide that much excitement, so I’ve greedily searched for any and all retellings.
Some people greatly dislike retellings, but I think they’re a great way to explore a fairy tale, a folk tale, or some aspect of mythology in a different context. Retellings can update the story, flesh out the characters, and generally make the story more relevant for current readers. I’ve read a lot of great retellings of Beauty and the Beast over the years, and I’ve loved how different authors can take the same basic story and create such unique and exciting worlds and characters all their own. I’ve encountered a version of Belle who is part cat, a version of the Beast who seems to promise happily ever after until his protective nature forces the heroine to fight for her freedom, and a version of the story tightly twisted with the tale of Little Red Riding Hood. I’ve even fallen in love with a Belle that falls in love with another Beast entirely: Rumpelstiltskin.
But no matter how many times or ways I explored the old French tale, I wanted more. Of course, when I heard Disney was making a live-action remake, I was beyond excited. Every mention of the film had me stifling squeals of delight, and while I was a tad bit afraid Disney would ruin my beloved tale, I should’ve known better.
But this isn’t a review of the movie, although I will say if you haven’t seen it, go. Now. Go see it now. I don’t care what other plans you had, cancel them. This movie is worth every accolade and more.
This is a review of Hunted, one of the newest—and easily one of my favorite—retellings of Beauty and the Beast. I don’t know if the publication of this book was planned to be so close to the release of the new movie, but it was perfect timing for me. As soon as I’d seen the movie, I was in need of more, and Hunted was there to fill the hole with a strong heroine, wonderful world-building, and a healthy dose of Russian folklore to create an entirely new take on this story.
I loved Yeva (AKA Beauty) from the very beginning. It’s quite clear that she doesn’t feel truly comfortable being part of the baroness’s inner circle, and I like that she’s able to make the best of an irritating situation by taking the unwanted window seat, which gives her a view of the forest. Yeva immediately fits the bill for being a ‘funny girl,’ because although she is polite enough, it’s clear that she’s clueless about social dynamics. She has no idea Solmir, the man likely to the baron’s heir, has his eye on her, and I’m glad that it’s firmly established that Yeva’s motives are quite different from the other aristocrats. She isn’t looking to catch a husband, she’s only hoping for opportunities to be herself, whether that means predicting a winter storm to free her from her sewing circle a little early or having dinner discussions about the best way to skin a deer.
But despite Yeva not quite fitting into high society, she’s still quite accomplished in her own way. She’s a skilled hunter, she’s good with dogs, and while she may not be a proficient cook, she knows her way around the kitchen. I love that Yeva is skilled in these areas because these are the things that let her be with those she loved. Her father taught her to hunt, and they’d bonded over their time spend together I the forest. Yeva loved learning from her father and hearing the fairy tales he would tell her, and she grows to be the favorite daughter as a result. Yeva’s relationship with the family dogs grew out of her hunting trips with her father, where the dogs would help them track and flush out prey. Although Pelei and Doe-Eyes are part of the family, they both see Yeva as their favorite, particularly Doe-Eyes. Yeva’s relationship with Doe-Eyes is sweet, and they look after one another not matter what. And finally, it’s working in the kitchen, building the fire and seasoning the bread, that gives Yeva a chance to be with her sisters.
I love the relationship between Yeva and her two older sisters. The sisters in the original story were arrogant and prideful, and they jealously hated Beauty for her sweetness and her good looks. Asenka and Lena could not be more unlike those original sisters. They’re both sweet, loving, and very protective of their littlest sister. They know Yeva is their father’s favorite, but they don’t mind, and they trust one another with their hopes and dreams like sisters should. Asenka in particular is also boundlessly selfless, always putting her sisters’ happiness above her own. It breaks my heart to see her giving up her hope of marrying Solmir when he instead asks for Yeva’s hand, but Asenka would rather have her own heart broken than see her sister suffer. The sisterly love between Yeva, Asenka, and Lena is incredibly heartwarming and so realistically portrayed, and I love that the bond between them grows even tighter when the family is forced to move to their father’s old hunting lodge. The three girls don’t let their misfortune tear them apart; instead they step up and work to make the best of things, knowing that all they have left is each other, and that’s all they really need.
Once they’re back at the hunting lodge, Yeva begins to show more of her true self rather than the façade she had to put up for the people in town. She finds solace in the woods and her hunting, and her desire to provide for her family shows through in ways it never could when she part of the baroness’s court. Her sisters’ protectiveness really shows here, too, as they worry about Yeva being out in the woods by herself, and although they try to find ways to keep her at home, Asenka and Lena know that the forest is where Yeva is truly herself.
Although we see Yeva hunting, it’s not until her father fails to come back from one of his own hunting trips that we really see Yeva’s ferocity. Ignoring her sisters’ pleas to stay, Yeva takes off into the woods, focused only on finding her father and bringing him home. She runs herself ragged following the trail, her worry for her father far greater than her concern for herself. And when she finds her father dead, seemingly at the paws of an impossibly large creature, what little concern Yeva does have for herself flies out the window; all Yeva can think about it revenge, even if it costs her own life to get it. Yeva is far more bloodthirsty than most versions of Beauty, but it perfectly suits her character. She’s a hunter who loves her family more than anything, and when faced with the monster who viciously killed and mutilated her beloved father, of course she’s going to want to take it down.
Anger makes people reckless, though, so it’s really no surprise that Yeva’s plan to kill the Beast doesn’t quite work out. Instead of killing him, Yeva finds herself his prisoner, chained in a cold, dark cell with no chance of being rescued. No chance, that is, until she begins to make friends with a man she believes is also a captive, a man who listens to her stories and tries to make her more comfortable. I love this little twist here; we know that the man Yeva is befriending is actually the Beast himself, and so it’s interesting to see how she begins to open up to him knowing that he will never help her escape. It’s also interesting to see the Beast slowly begin to warm up to Yeva. He gives her what she asks for—to an extent—and he begins to treat her less like a prisoner and more like a friend. When she gets sick, he even moves her to a room in the castle and gives her back her bow and tools so she can make arrows to pass the time. It’s different to see ‘Beauty’ getting along with the Beast so early in the story, but it’s a dishonest relationship, and when Yeva betrays the Beast’s trust and discovers his true identity, that relationship rapidly deteriorates.
It's during this initial portion of Yeva’s captivity that Russian folklore beings to be woven into the otherwise largely-familiar story. I’ve recently been reading more stories involving Russian folktales or reading the folktales themselves, so I was rather excited to recognize many of the stories Yeva shared with the Beast. In the context of the story, the tales had been told to Yeva by her father, and repeating them makes her feel closer to him and also gives her something to focus on besides her situation. But of course, these stories have a larger purpose, and I love getting to see the aspects of these different tales incorporated into Yeva’s journey. For example, the Beast keeps waiting for someone—specifically, a guy—to come and rescue Yeva so that the Beast can use that man to break the curse. Instead, he discovers that it’s Yeva herself that’s a hunter, proving just like Vasilisa that girls can be clever and cunning and capable, even more so than men sometimes. It’s a well-executed blending of fairy tales from different cultures, and I’ve never read a Russian-influenced retelling of Beauty and the Beast, so I was pleasantly surprised to see aspects of Yeva’s story pop up in the narrative.
Once he realizes that Yeva is the hunter he’s been looking for, the Beast begins training Yeva to hunt a different type of prey. The story begins to pick up at this point, with Yeva and the Beast interacting more and more and really feeling each other out. Yeva’s still determined to kill the Beast and avenge her father, but she knows she has to wait for the right opportunity to strike. If she fails to kill the Beast, he’ll kill her and then her family, and Yeva would rather bide her time as a captive than see her sisters hurt. The Beast, on the other hand, starts to become less and less animalistic. Sure, he still hunts like a wolf, and he lashes out like a wild animal, but he begins to speak more, and his treatment of Yeva becomes more friend-like once again. There’s still a lot of animosity between the two, but there are also some moments of genuine kindness and gratitude. I absolutely love that the Beast gives Yeva unrestricted access to his library, which, although far smaller and more personal than the grand library of the Disney films, is still a precious gift. The fact that a love of reading is perhaps the only common thread between all the different versions of Beauty I’ve encountered truly warms my heart. It shows that people of all types, with drastically different backgrounds and interests and dreams, can love books. Stories have the power to change people, as Yeva’s stories have already shown, reaching into not just the mind and the heart, but reaching into the very soul of a person and making them better.
In addition to furthering the relationship between Yeva and the Beast, this training section also greatly expands the world of the story. Yeva explores what’s left of the Beast’s castle, and although she doesn’t find an enchanted rose, she does find clues to the Beast’s past and what happened to him. But it’s really outside the castle that Yeva learns the most. With the Beast’s help, Yeva learns to see the wood hidden within the wood, a world full of magic and fairy tale creatures, including the one that Yeva must hunt to break the Beast’s curse. This is another nice twist, as it opens up an enchanted world that had really been missed up to that point. Without any of the cursed staff that I’m so familiar with around to constantly provide a reminder of the curse, it’s easier to forget that magic really exists in Yeva’s world. Frankly, I like that there isn’t anyone else in the castle, as it allows for more focus on Yeva and the Beast both individually and in their interactions with one another, and this reminder of magic is more subtle and more powerful. It fulfills the sense of wonder that Yeva has always possessed, and it helps her realize that her father hadn’t been crazy, just able to see more than the average person.
It’s worth pointing out that the descriptions of the castle and both the normal and enchanted woods are written quite thoroughly and very straightforward, just as a hunter like Yeva would see them. It’s a much more down-to-earth view of the world, which is exactly what I would expect from Yeva, and it really strengthens her characterization.
As Yeva’s hunting and training skills grow, she knows her chance to kill the Beast is growing closer and closer, and she finally decides the time is right. She sneaks up to the Beast’s room one night, prepared to kill him while he’s sleeping. She’s not prepared, however, to see the Beast as a human, sleeping peacefully and muttering her name, but that’s not enough to stop her from stabbing him in the throat.
And so the Beast dies.
But he doesn’t stay dead. This scene kills me, with the Beast heartbreakingly explaining that he, too, is a prisoner, unable to die and escape his curse. And upon truly understanding the Beast’s plight and seeing his true kindness, Yeva realizes that he didn’t kill her father, and that’s there no way to avenge him.
Heartbroken by her father’s death all over again, Yeva leaves the Beast to return to her sisters. But she finds almost a year has passed and that the hunting lodge stands empty. Yeva eventually tracks her sisters back to their home in town, and their reunion is as heartwarming as the Beast’s quick reversion to the wolf is tragic. I like seeing Yeva back with her family, but it’s clear that, just as in the beginning, it isn’t where she belongs. It doesn’t take long for Yeva to realize that she must return and rescue the Beast, that despite all the initial terribleness, his castle was the only place she doesn’t feel lonely. They’ve both done horrible things to one another, but they’ve both changed, and now while Yeva is free, the Beast is still a prisoner. Yeva plans to leave, only to be stopped by her sisters, who beg her to stay long enough for Asenka’s wedding—to Solmir! —and Yeva agrees.
Unfortunately, that means that by the time Yeva returns to the Beast’s castle, he’s gone. All Yeva finds is the book he was reading the night she stabbed him, the book that gives Yeva the final clue to the Beast’s curse. For inside the book is the lineage of the royal family, including a young prince named Eovan. And marking the page is a feather, not of a guinea fowl as Yeva had originally assumed, but of the Firebird. Yeva realizes that the Beast is the Ivan of her father’s fairy tales, the one who had snatched a single feather from the tail of the Firebird and who had, in his quest to find the rest of the creature, had made friends with a large, magical wolf. The wolf had helped Ivan wiggle out of all consequences—including death—and get everything he’d ever wanted. It was the Firebird who had cursed Eovan and the wolf to become the Beast, one creature with two natures, and so it’s the Firebird that Yeva must kill to break the curse.
The Firebird has been Yeva’s most beloved creature from all her father’s stories, but for Prince Eovan, she sets out to find and kill the bird. She manages to travel as far north as she can go, passing several tests along the way, and eventually finds the Firebird in a cave. Seeing the Firebird, the thing she’s wanted to find her entire life, Yeva almost forgets her mission, but at the last moment, she realizes that the Firebird is now everything she’s always wanted because it’s what will save her Beast. Yeva nocks an arrow and sends it flying straight at the Firebird’s chest.
And the Firebird simply disappears, leaving Yeva trapped in the cave. She manages to start a fire using her bow and her book of fairy tales, but there’s no way out, and Yeva, unbowed up to this point, is just about to give up hope when the Beast arrives. He breaks through the ice wall trapping Yeva, and Yeva is elated…until she realizes that the Beast’s human side is gone, leaving her to face a large, angry wolf ready to pounce. All Yeva can think to do is pull out the Firebird feather, and that stops the Beast long enough for Yeva to begin a story. Yeva tells the Beast his story, hoping to remind him of who he truly is, but she manages instead to realize that Eovan’s true curse was always longing, always wanting more.
And then Yeva realizes that she’s just like Eovan. She was never truly happy just being at home with her family and friends, she wasn’t happy getting to hunt every day, she wasn’t happy with the things and people she already had. Like Eovan, Yeva wanted the Firebird more than anything, but unlike Eovan, she wasn’t cursed to be a beast until the Firebird returned.
The story is enough to bring the Beast back to his human side, but it’s not enough to break the curse. Yeva couldn’t kill the Firebird, and she’s heartbroken that she failed the man with whom she’s fallen in love. But that’s when they both discover the true nature of the curse—that Eovan was cursed to be a Beast until what he wanted most in the entire world came back to him. For so long, that had been the Firebird, but once he met Yeva, she became his true desire, and her return breaks the curse. I love this twist, both because of the fairy tale love and because it’s so realistic. Who hasn’t experienced that feeling of wanting more—more adventure, more happiness, more life? And so many people have felt that longing for something only to realize that what they’d truly been longing for has shifted, usually to something right in front of them, something they’ve had all along. The Beast’s curse belongs to all of us, we’re just punished in different ways for it.
But even centuries-long curses can’t stand up to true love, and Yeva and Eovan find all they want is one another. I can’t tell you how much I love the open-endedness and sheer happiness of the epilogue. I love that Yeva and Eovan leave themselves free to follow their hearts and their longings, never tied to one place for too long, but always together. It’s the perfect plan—or lack thereof—for two people who have never been satisfied with anything or anyone except each other, and it’s full of countless possibilities for them to do as they wish. No matter what they choose, they’ll find magic and love in one another, Beauty and the Beast together at last.
Hunted is a magical retelling of Beauty and the Beast that manages to stand out from the rest. Yeva is a strong and compelling heroine, the paradox of the Beast is wonderfully portrayed, and the true nature of the curse is one we can all relate to. The inclusion of Russian folklore in the world-building and the plot provides a unique twist and another layer of enchantment to the story. Anyone who’s fallen in love—or back in love—with this classic fairy tale because of the new Disney adaptation will love the blend of the familiar and the unexpected in this new take on the story, and everyone will love Yeva as a fierce, capable heroine hoping to find a bit of magic in her world. So get out there and pick up Hunted—just make sure there’s nothing big and hairy lurking behind you as you go.
Stray Thoughts & Observations:
I absolutely love this cover. I love the green standing out against the snow, and that tagline is everything.
I felt so bad for Yeva’s father. He was just trying to give his girls the world, and instead lost everything.
I liked the Beast’s chapters. They’re quick, but they provide a good look into the Beast’s thoughts and how they change as he interacts with Beauty.
I’m so glad that Radak didn’t turn out to be a jerk and that he loved Lena enough to want to marry her despite her being poor.
Yeva’s journey to find the Firebird was very myth-like storytelling. It was a bit abstract but still managed to hit all the high points and got Yeva to her goal in a timely fashion.
She’s his Firebird! It’s so cheesy, but so perfect.
Favorite Quotes:
She moves like an animal in a woman’s body. She moves like beauty.
The lust was rising in her, the wild hiss of revenge bubbling up to replace the hunter’s cold reason.
Her father had always told her that no matter the predicament, a hunter should never lie to himself. Only by understanding the problem can one see past it.
In every fairy tale there were rules. Even the monsters could not break them. And where, except in fairy tales, did there exist talking bears? But wishing is for men. Wanting is what brought us here. Desire and greed are human traits. We are the Beast. And yet…I wish.
Spring had not come to the wood, but it was coming to the Beast’s heart. And at the same time, she hardened her own.
And as if by the same magic that had transformed the Beast, she became nothing more than a little girl who’d lost her father.
…It was the want that screamed to the sky that she’d give everything, all of herself and all she’d ever be, to live one moment of that other life, the one she could not explain, not even to herself.
“But you can be happy about a thing and sad about it at the same time. Feeling one thing in your heart doesn’t stop you from feeling another.”
“He never hurt me. Well, he did once, but to be fair, I had shot him with an arrow and was about to kill him with an axe.”
But if her experience with the Firebird had taught her anything, it was that even here, at the edge of the world, life wasn’t a story.
The prince’s curse wasn’t arrogance or cruelty, as it was so often in fairy tales. His curse was wanting, always wanting. And so was Yeva’s.
In a rush, she blurted, “I would give up a thousand happy endings, just to go back with you to your valley and live as we did. I’d give up every fairy tale I’ve ever known just to hear you say my name again.”
My longing for something else, beyond, into magic and dreams and the things everyone seemed to leave behind as children. For something I knew I could never find. It’s the waiting that brought me here, to her. To another soul as empty as mine, and yet not empty at all, because it’s so full of everything I thought only I ever felt. Her soul against mine feels like music, like heartbeat, like magic. Like beauty.
