"Yeah, right. Howie. You know he married my sister? Gave me the cutest little niece." Buck beams and pulls out his phone to show off the album of Jee Yun photos. And then the other thought strikes again.

They look about the same age. It's possible, he thinks. Well, it's not impossible. Buck goes to pocket his phone again, only he misses his shirt entirely and it clatters on the table.

"Sorry 'bout that, uh, so if you worked with them- did you, uh, work with, uh, T-tommy? Tommy Kinard?"

Why is the name that used to slide off his tongue so easily now trip and stutter like it doesn't belong there?

The guy laughs, not seeming to notice Buck's elocution issues, and takes another shot. “Fuck, I’m getting too old for this shit.”

He spins the empty shot glass like a top. “Kinard? Yep, sure did. One of the best partners I could've asked for. At least he got to leave on his own terms.”

Buck furrows his brow, something familiar scratching at the back of his tequila addled brain. “What, uh, what did you say your name was again?”

“I didn’t,” the guy says matter of factly.

“But, you seem like a nice guy, so I'll tell you," he adds with a wink. "It’s Deluca. Sal Deluca.”

Buck's heard the name, a few stories here and there. Heard he moved to the 122, but doesn't know why.

"You transferred, right?" Buck asks cautiously.

The guy - Sal - shrugs his acknowledgement. "More or less. Anyway, I guess I better amend my introduction then. It's actually Captain Deluca. But Sal is fine. Or just Deluca."

"Buck."

Sal looks at him like he's got three heads. "Is that something new the kids are saying these days or...?"

"No, uh, 's m'name. Buck. Well, Evan Buckley, but you can call me Buck."

Sal studies him for a second before holding a hand out. "Nice to meet you, kid."

They shake hands and Buck thinks about the way Sal called him 'kid'. It's not like when Tommy said it. More like Bobby or Chim. Familial.

"Sorry to drink and run, but I gotta get home," Sal says, pushing out of his chair. "Wife's gonna kill me if I'm home too late."

"Oh, yeah. Sure. Maybe I'll see you around."

"Yeah, maybe." Then he's throwing some cash on the table and walking away.

As soon as he's out of sight, Sal taps on the camera app. It's probably a little unethical to surreptitiously be taking photos of the kid- Buck- but it's for a good cause.

Sal pushes aside the phantom acrid scent of a dinner forgotten in the oven while they fucked on the kitchen floor, the fear in Tommy's eyes when Sal asked when they could tell people about them. Because it had been months of sneaking around to each other's apartments. Of being more than just work partners- or so he thought. "Maybe he'll get his head out of his ass before it's too late this time."

Nanna

Nanna (also known as Nannar, Nanna-Suen, Sin, Asimbabbar, Namrasit, Inbu) is the Mesopotamian god of the moon and wisdom. He is one of the oldest gods in the Mesopotamian pantheon and is first mentioned at the very dawn of writing in Sumer c. 3500 BCE. His worship continued until the 3rd century CE.

Nanna was his Sumerian name while he was known as Sin, Nanna-Sin, Nanna-Suen and other names by the Akkadians, Assyrians, Babylonians, and others. His cult center was the great temple and ziggurat at the Sumerian city of Ur, and he is frequently mentioned in hymns and inscriptions from the Ur III Period (2047-1750 BCE) as the chief god of the pantheon with the epithet Enzu, lord of wisdom. His importance is evident in the number of inscriptions which refer to or praise him and the stories in which he features.

He was the son of Enlil and Ninlil and is their first-born after Enlil seduces Ninlil by the riverbank in the myth Enlil and Ninlil. His wife was Ningal (also Nikkal, the 'Great Lady'), a fertility goddess, and their children were Utu-Shamash (the sun god) and, in some stories, his twin sister Inanna/Ishtar (goddess of love and sexuality), Ereshkigal (Queen of the Dead), and Ishkur (also known as Adad, god of storms).

An interesting aspect of this family tree is that the moon (Nanna) is the father of the sun (Utu/Shamash). It is thought this belief originated in the early days of a hunter-gatherer social structure when the moon was more important to a community for traveling by night and telling the time of the month; the sun only became more important once the people settled down and began to practice agriculture. The religious belief, then, mirrored the cultural development. Scholar Stephen Bertman writes:

The Mesopotamians thus conceived of day, illuminated by the sun, as emanating from the darkness of night and the lesser light of the moon. As the time of lovemaking, the night and the moon were linked to the goddess of the erotic. As a source of light, the moon was also viewed as humanity's protector against acts of criminality undertaken under the cover of darkness even as the illuminating and all-seeing sun was looked upon as a guardian of justice. (122)

Nanna is represented as a recumbent moon and associated with the bull and lion-dragon. He is further depicted as a seated man with a long beard of lapis lazuli, a crescent moon above him, or riding on the back of a winged bull. In many inscriptions he is represented simply by the number 30, referring to the number of days in a lunar month, and the crescent moon was regarded as his barge in which he sailed through the night sky.

He was an immensely popular god, one of the original Sumerian pantheon. His cult center was at Ur and his most famous high priestess was Enheduanna (l. 2285-2250 BCE), although he also had an important temple at Harran in modern-day Syria where his son was Nusku, god of fire and light. Nanna, Ningal, and Nusku were worshiped as a triad, though this veneration mainly focused on the father and son.

Under the reign of Nabonidus (c. 556-539 BCE) the king's mother served as high priestess at Harran while his daughter held the same position at Nanna's temple in Ur. This arrangement consolidated Nabonidus' power in the same way that Sargon of Akkad (r. 2334-2279 BCE) had earlier placed his daughter Enheduanna in her position at Ur. Nanna is repeatedly seen in ancient texts as a god who provides and unifies, and some of the most successful Mesopotamian rulers capitalized on this belief.

Names & Significance

Nanna first appears under that name (whose meaning is unknown) c. 3500 BCE. He is already an important deity when he is mentioned as Sin/Suen during the reign of Sargon of Akkad and is referred to as "the illuminator." Even from this early period, he was associated with wisdom and was honored by Sargon's grandson, the great Naram-Sin (r. 2261-2224 BCE), who took his name upon coming to the throne. Naram-Sin, considered the greatest of the Akkadian kings, was among those who understood how to use religious belief to rule most effectively.

The Akkadians also knew Nanna/Sin by a number of other names, which are actually epithets such as Asimbabbar/Ashgirbabbar (possibly meaning 'embellisher' or 'he who embellishes'), Namrasit ('who shines forth'), and Inbu ('The Fruit,' possibly referring to the moon's changing shape). To the Babylonians, Nanna was the son of Marduk who created him and placed him in the sky.

Lunar eclipses were thought to be caused, in some eras, by gods or demons trying to steal the moon's light, and Nanna (or in some stories Marduk) had to fight against them to restore natural order. Bertman comments on how "during the new moon when Nanna/Sin's light was not visible, the god was said to be in the netherworld, where he judged the dead" (123). At one point or another throughout Mesopotamia's long history, Nanna was king of the gods, lord of wisdom, keeper of time, guardian of the future (diviner), holder of secrets, but is always seen as the devoted son of Enlil and a protector and guardian of humanity.

The knock comes after lunch. Bobby’s just ended the report about their morning call, when it happens and after the knock he sees the head of curls looking inside.

“Can we talk, Cap?” Buck asks and Bobby nods on the chair near his table, writing the last word and being satisfied with his job done for now.

“What’s wrong, Buck?”

“Eddie c-comes back in two weeks,” Bobby nods with a smile, but being surprised how not enthusiastic Buck seems. “And R-ravi is yet to think about coming back to B-shift especially because it's p-packed.”

Bobby nods with a frown not knowing where Buck leads with it.

“Yes, and?”

“And it means there’s no space for Ravi and Eddie at this station.”

That …. is a good reasoning. B shift liked their latest temporary member and, as Eddie hadn’t yet seemed to decide about actually coming back, they took them as constant team members. And now Eddie comes and Bobby can’t just kick Ravi, but Eddie is …

“But they will have if you will sign this,” Buck pushes the papers Bobby hasn’t actually seen yet. His eyes basically fall when he sees what it is. PTO request and request for station switch. With Buck’s name on it.

“Buck. what… I?”

“I-I want to be a Lieutenant and even put myself in the list for the testing in two months. But before Eddie said he’s coming back I wasn't sure how it could work. Didn’t want to make you try and find another person for a team, or left you understuffed. And I d-don’t want to take the promotion from Hen when you will retire again,” Buck smiles at him, but Bobby feels freezed under it, not warm like before. “It’s y-yours and her station.”

Not mine is so loud yet unsaid and Bobby feels how his heart sinks. What does Buck mean by it’s not his station?

“But Buck…”

“I-I have already decided everything. I found a new apartment. It’s really close to T-tommy and close to the 122 and 156, who need L-lieutenants. I’m going to talk to the captains during the PTO to decide. A-and I’m going to study all that time, even though I ace all the previous years tests I do at home.”

“Buck, certainly, you can think more about it, not make the impulsive decision,” Bobby starts again, but again Buck interaps him.

“I registered for the test 6 months ago.”

That hits hard. How did Bobby never think Buck actually was interested in a career change so soon? How did he miss it all?

“You never said anything. Never asked for help,” he says carefully, not loving the idea that Buck was doing it alone. Without him to advice.

Buck just shrugs and it again feels cold.

“I d-didn’t want to. I w-wanted it to be my decision,” Buck turns away from him, smirking, “and I didn’t want to hear that I’m not ready. Or impulsive. Or any other shit you could say to try and get me to stay,” it sounds so cold and angry and Bobby tries to deny it, but nothing leaves his tongue. Because it's true. That’s all what he wants to say even now.

“I’ve learned everything I could from you, Bobby. I don’t need more. I need new experiences, not stay here.”

That… hurts. And Bobby feels like he doesn’t even know what to say to try and make Bucks stay. What can he say to the man who doesn’t need him in his life anymore?

Buck looks back at him, “I love 118, but it’s time for me to get away from it.”

WIth that Buck gets up, going to the door, but before opening it, he turns back, “and yeah, I’ll t-tell everyone on my last shift. N-not before,” the blue eyes pin him to the place and for the first time in years Bobby actually sees how older Buck got. “And don’t dare to tell anyone, Bobby. E-except LAFD HQ, of course. Don’t make me call them and ask about my PTO and station requests through your head.”

The door closes. 

Bobby wants a drink. He texts Athena.

On February 12, 2016, Muffet's Love Ball RP was hosted. This was a huge step for the UTMV Community.

In modern times, the amount of UTMV content has started to slow down. I believe that if we do a similar event, we can create a surge in the UTMV community and bring back a lot of activity.

We have organized "The Violet Banquet," a spiritual successor to Muffet's Love Ball that aims to revitalize the server.

The First Violet Banquet will be held on the 9th anniversary of Love-Ball from February 12, 2025 (12AM EST) to February 16, 2025 (11:59 PM). We will then host another Violet Banquet, learning from our previous run, on the 10th anniversary (February 12, 2026), pulling all the stops to create a truly sans-ational event.

Jaydick and Pragmatic Love

For some reason (*cough* neurodivergence *cough*) I like to get introspective about why I like the things I like. My love for jaydick came kinda naturally – a red/blue aesthetic between 2 dorks with canonically strong and complex feelings towards each other? Been there, done that, sign me up. But, like...why? Why was I obsessed with this ship? Why is the pairing itself so compelling, whether you ship them or not? I thought: "I don't know, it's the way they're coded as opposites but aren't really, and the way Jason admires Dick but also resents him a little, and the way that Dick's entire identity shifts when Jason comes along, I guess."

And digging a little deeper, I could finally put it into words: it's because Jason was made for Dick. In much the same way that Dick (and consequently Robin) was made to be Bruce's ward / Batman's partner, Jason was created to be someone Dick could conceivably pass his mantle to, someone he could see something of himself in and trust to take on the responsibility he'd been safeguarding for years so that he could finally go do something else (i.e. become Nightwing). Metatextually (i.e. between text and audience), this makes sense, especially given the logic that Jason needed to be similar enough to Dick for audiences to like him while being his own person so he wasn't just a shameless ripoff. (This logic evolved over time, hence retcons, but still.) But contextually (within a text, between characters), what must that look like?

If I had to put it in a single word, it seems like both fans and writers have settled on pragma. (EDIT: I like the Wikipedia article better.) According to Greek philosophy-based types of love, pragma is the type of love based on personal qualities, a sense of duty/obligation, and long term commitment. There is compromise and mutual understanding here. It's the type of love most associated with married couples who have been together for a while.

What's awesome about this is it can coexist alongside other types of love, like philia (platonic), eros (lust-driven), or ludos (flirtatious). These secondary types are where I see the disconnect between shippers and antis, but pragma is still the foundation, not necessarily in a romantic way, but certainly in the commitment.

A few examples under the cut.

Nightwing (1996) #119-122. I wrote about this enough, and so has frog. Commitment, sense of duty/obligation

Nightwing (2016) #15. Jason and Dick being bros, and Jason being self aware and commenting on their coping mechanisms (i.e. violence). Long-term mutual understanding.

Red Hood and the Outlaws (2016) Annual #1. stealing this from @the-mocking-robin to make a point. Admiration of personal qualities.
