An alternative to google docs

To paraphrase a recent post: google docs is pants as a writing tool.

I'm suggesting MS Word as an alternative. Yeah, I know, it's not perfect, but it is (IMO), better than google docs.

But I'm not just suggesting Word when I suggest Word. I'm suggesting a free Microsoft account, which gives you Word and OneDrive.

It only takes a minute or two and a free account gets you:

Word in the browser

A OneDrive with 5gb of storage - now, 5gb might not be much holistically but in terms of text based documents, it's decent. My entire 'Fic' folder is 2.11gb. That's everything I've ever written and all their drafts, wips and their multiple drafts, betaed fics, ideas, writing refs and guidance, archived drafts/fics, AND the 500+ fics I've downloaded as epubs from AO3).

Excel, Outlook, Teams, OneNote - basically the whole Microsoft365 suite - in the browser

I use Word exclusively, both for fic and for work (where I write extensively), and the online version does everything I need. It autosaves, has version control/reversion, and sharing (if that's what you're into), and you can seamlessly copy and paste from Word into AO3's rich text editor - no formatting adjustments required.

Anyway, it's something to think about. If you want to give it a try, the simplest way is to create a new OneDrive account, which will also give you everything else.

Click 'get a new email address' and follow the prompts (recommended but not required) or use an existing email address. If you create a new email address, don't actually use it for email. It's just the umbrella the account sits under.

Got any thoughts on the new Dark Ages reveals? I'm pretty excited about the dragon and the mech!

I generally try not to hyper analyze trailers or anything bc I know stuff is prone to changing between announcement and release, but I'll stick a few thoughts under the cut here, since I know a lot of people dont want any spoilers at all

Biggest thought: CONFIRMED VALEN SIGHTING,,, and he has both eyes still! So we'll probably get to see what happened there.

There was a woman there, too. I hope she gets an action role, rather than just a support role, and I'll be really sad if they continue the trend of "make the girl a villain," but most of all I Really, Really, REALLY just hope they don't try to make her a love interest.

I saw a lot of people talking abt dg's godmode eyes, but I have a suspicion that they're going to be a Bad Thing in the story. They were saying something in the xbox direct about how the story starts w him being trapped, and showing it with footage of him being Zapped, which was mainly focused on his eyes. Tentatively presenting the idea that his eyes glowing are some residual effect of the khan maykr/hell/whoever trying to control or influence him, and one of your long standing goals of the game is to Get Rid Of That

The dragon and the atlan do look cool... I'm interested in seeing how they change the gameplay. I'm also hoping their being there/dg using them actually makes sense story wise, and they're not just little mechanical demos stuck into the campaign to show off multiplayer mechanics, the way the revenant drone bit in Eternal was.

There was a post about harddrive sizes and cloud services on my dash the other day -

By all means, laptops should and more importantly could have at least 1T of harddrive space. Instead, they come with like 256Gb because the expectation is that you A) do not have files to store because you only use it for idk streaming and B) if you have files to store, you’ll be storing them in the cloud anyway.

ANYWAY

We don’t use laptops at my work, but we use these horse shit mini pcs with a similar harddrive. They’re parent company mandated and we can’t get anything else. Our IT management doesn’t see the issues with them, and for sure, if there are only one or two people using the computer they are largely fine. Company policy says you aren’t supposed to store anything in the harddrive anyway.

However, the problem we (as in my specific workplace under parent company) have is that we can easily have ten or more - up to twenty in some cases - users using the same pc. Why is this a problem?

Our computers store a profile for every user logging in. Even if you do not save anything to your profile, it’s about 6Gb.

After OC, those profiles alone can suck up half of the hd space.
