The blue is beginning to fade. With each wash, it seeps out of her hair and leaves it pale like the morning sky.

Alex doesn’t like to think that its loss of vibrancy reflects what’s left inside of her. But that’s what it is, isn’t it? Well, not literally. It’s a metaphor. She tugs at a strand as she stares at herself in the mirror.

Okay, that’s just stupid. It’s hair. Color fades. It’s just time for a new look. She’s okay. She’s not fading. It’s hair. All it takes is more dye to cover it up, just like before.

The sword in Marie’s hand is overwhelming. Bulky and heavy, it makes the muscles in her arm strain with the effort to keep it aloft. When Cristian takes a swing at her, the hit knocks her back one step, two. All she’s been able to do in a week of training is block him; she knows that had this been a real fight, she’d have been dead.

“I hate this,” she seethes between clenched teeth. She ignores the sweat that pours down her neck and over the bridge of her nose, making her skin itch. 

His grin makes her seethe.
