A couple of video essays about Fear & Hunger finally convinced me to do something that years of hype and praise have not managed to make me do - I'm going to read Berserk.

#i think i was mainly holding off on reading it bc 'brutal and depressing' was not the type of story i gravitated to as a teen #as a result mentally categorising berserk as not for me even as my tolerance for dark and gritty stories increased as an adult #it wasn't until getting into (videos about) fear & hunger and hearing people comparing the game to berserk #that i had the thought 'oh shit i might actually really enjoy berserk'#personal #did i like a normal person buy the first volume or at least read the manga online first to see if i'd like it?#no i decided to spend a disgusting amount of money on vol 1 of the deluxe edition instead #(which the way the uk bookstores are pricing it is more expensive than just buying the three volumes compiled in it individually)#why?#1. because i'm stupid #2. because it's very pretty and i like owning beautiful things/art #if only i also liked being fiscally responsible 🤢

Another thing that makes kaladin so painfully relatable is how much his mental illness hides his personality, because between depressive episodes and trauma he's this sarcastic little shit that smiles a lot at his friends and then the depression gets to him and all that disappears
