minor season 5 spoilers for lmk!!!
(some sketches + my thoughts on the new season :0)
Tumblr media
this season was so good!! i'm gonna put my long rant about my thoughts below, just cause i have a lot of things i wanna talk about :3
animation: ik the animation change was jarring for some people and i did almost cry about flying bark leaving the show when the news first dropped, but i honestly think wildbrain did a great job and the animation is still super cute and fun. it's definitely different and you can tell, but they still do all the silly animation things that flying bark did and this season honestly had some of my favourite humor (visual and otherwise).
i'll definitely miss the old animation, fully hand drawn 2D animation is becoming harder to come by in cartoons now so it's sad to see this show lose one of the most exciting aspects of it, but i'm looking forward to seeing how wildbrain does in the following season(s?). i'm honestly just glad we're getting more monkie kid content.
plot: i did enjoy the plot they set up. this season did feel different pacing wise? if that makes sense. not that it's necessarily bad i just noticed it felt a bit different. i'm really excited to see more about this whole chaos thing.
ik li jing wasn't necessarily a villain, but he was an antagonist for a bit so i'm adding my two cents about him and nezha. i didn't love what they did with their story arc, but ik there's only so much that can be done in a 10 episode season where each episode is only 10 minutes long. i think their arc would've just benefited from more time :(
villain(s): i think the nine headed demon is such an interesting character (even though he did confuse me a bit) so i hope we get to see more of him. probably my favourite big bad so far personality-wise.
main characters: i'm glad sun wukong had more screentime this season!! he always either isn't around or gets trapped, so it's nice that he was present again.
i definitely felt this season focused a lot more on the monkie trio, which was bound to happen, but i like them so i was fine with it. idk how much of a redemption arc macaque is trying to have, but i kind of hope it's not a standard redemption arc. not that i didn't enjoy macaque's character this or any other season, i do like him most of the time. i just personally hope they keep him as more of a neutral figure even if he does stick around with the group.
i don't have much to say on mk that hasn't already been said. i love the guy and i hope he gets to be happy again soon T^T
side characters? ig: i thought mei and red son's episode was cute. i love dragonfruit interactions a lot, but i do hope red son gets some more screentime next season cause i miss him </3
i am happy sandy got some more screentime though, his episode with mk was cute. also tang was so real this season, he's just like me fr (i hate manual labor).
other notes and whatnot: this season felt shorter somehow, even though it wasn't and i'm not sure if we'll be getting a special like we always do or if they're just going to move on to the next season. either way, i'm excited to see where it goes from here.
although i wasn't in love with the ending of this season, it just felt a tad rushed and i definitely think we would've benefited from a few special episodes again.
i'd give this season a solid 8/10. i would love to go through all the episodes and share my thoughts on them, but i'm just gonna share my ranking of the episodes.
(i feel pretty even with 1-2 and 3-5)
1. collar the king
2. temple of the goddess
3. the cage
4. sacrifice
5. strings that bind
6. into the pagoda
7. claim to flame
8. harbinger
9. the storm within
10. festival fugitives

Zabel Interview, Team Delusional Round-up, re: the past few weeks (months?) šŸ’«
(Based on an ask from @natural-blue-26! This post contains spoilers, pertaining to the script leak. If you don't want them, turn back!!)
Tumblr media
First, let me say that @twdmusicboxmystery has posted an excellent video covering this topic over at her youtube channel. This post is jumping off of that, with some additional takes and analysis by me!
Also, note that I wanted to wait to post or to talk about this too much publicly until today, as I think there are a lot of genuine shippers who might be let down right now. Not all c*rylers are unhappy, unruly people. Many are shippers just like us, and even though I don't ship it, I support them. I am only putting this in the Team Delusional tag, so anyone who sees this is seeing it either because they follow me, follow the tag, follow someone who follows me, or they went looking for it themselves. I am not making drama or inciting a "ship war." If you're here out of anger, I suggest you turn back. I am just going to go over what I see.
The Facts
There has been a recent spate of events that have lead Team Delusional to a rare and more than modest resurgence. Until now, we were mostly just working with templates and symbolism, with a healthy dose of informed meta and speculation: We were seeing how the season 4/5 template was beginning to unfold toward the Grady arc, which includes Carol in a major role.
BUT. Let's check in with what's been going on over the past six months. A lot of this new resurgence starts with Emily's multiple trips to Europe for TWD cons in the past six months, integrated with her (yet unrealized) insinuation that she has been in studio recording one or more songs that Beth sang on TWD. Massive financial burdens aside, these are unusual undertakings for Emily. While she has done many fan cons over the years, visiting Europe twice in a four month period is bizarre (as well as expensive). She also talked openly and excitedly in the panel at French comic-con about how cool it would be if Beth returned. Further, Emily's "re-recording" of "Parting Glass" and possibly other TWD songs was a fairly big announcement for us at the time, but we haven't seen any more on it since. Speculation went everywhere from "She'll be singing in a flashback in Daryl Dixon season 2" to "Her songs will be part of the soundtrack" to "She'll actually BE in season 2, singing, in the present moment."
A lot of these things, if they were spread out over a 5 year period, wouldn't matter at all. But the fact that they're all taking place in the six-month run-up to Daryl Dixon s. 2, when we've already been able to speculate her tenuous return based on templates and other tells, is exciting. It's been almost ten years to the day of Beth's *death.* Why now? The timing on all of this is very suspicious.
Now, a few weeks ago, there was a LEAKED SCRIPT excerpt, which was claimed to be the final scene of DD 2.6. In the script, we learn that Isabelle has died and is appearing to Daryl in the form of a hallucination while he fights walkers in the Chunnel. This was confusing for many reasons. First, we already know, given their ruthless advertisement of the fact, that season 3 is already being filmed in Spain. So why are they headed to England? Also, where the hell is Laurent? Further, Isabelle's death, while unsurprising to many of us, creates some new questions. Many members of a certain *other* ship were ecstatic to learn about Isabelle's death, as Daryl/Isabelle ship rumors have been rampant in the fandom basically since season 1. Forget the fact that the same ship FREAKED out over Daryl/Leah three years ago (a clear nothingburger). Any time another female character even comes into contact with Daryl, a notable portion of fans must make their "displeasure" widely known.
Moving on. Yesterday, an article came out summarizing a yet-unreleased interview with David Zabel in SFX magazine. You can read it here. In the interview, Zabel makes the following comment about "C*ryl":
"The obvious thing to do, and the easier thing to do would be, 'Okay, now they're falling in love and they're a couple.' But I always felt like that would be a mistake, because it would feel like you were going into the TV book of tricks," he explains. "To me, there was never a question that [their connection] was something other than what it is, and what it seems to want to be, and why it works so well."
Zabel then goes on to hint at a highly-contentious romance with Daryl and Isabelle:
"What happened in season one was that you could see a connection forming, for sure," he says. "We didn't manufacture that but we left room for it. A lot of season two is about the development of that and where that relationship goes, and that little surrogate family of Isabelle, Daryl and Laurent."
Now, the full interview doesn't come out until September 4, at which point, we may get a clearer picture of what's going on. However, it seems that Zabel is politely declining the "C*ryl as romance" narrative. In the quote, he uses the excuse of wanting to avoid TV tropes; however, he then goes on to say (in a portion of the quote that is being wildly misinterpreted among the c*ryl ship) that "To [him]," there was "never a question that [their connection was something other than what it is." He then equates "what it is" with "what it seems to want to be" and "why it works so well." The misinterpretation is coming with that second part. "What it is" = friendship. Zabel is clearly saying that c*ryl "seems to want to be" exactly "what it is," aka: a sacred friendship and nothing more. He's basically saying that this already "works so well," and so why fix what ain't broke? Why create a romance between two characters who are clearly just very, very good friends when he could go another, more interesting direction?
Certain c*ryl accounts have misinterpreted that section of the quote. They seem to think he's saying that the c*ryl ship "seems to want to be" something else, something other than what it is. But if you follow the grammatical logic of the sentence, you can see that they're wrong here. It wants to be what it already is, which is friendship. Of course, to c*rylers, what it already is = romance, but that isn't canon. There's no proof of this. In fact, there's more proof to the contrary, that they're best friends. They're family. Carol was married to somebody else, raised a child with him, still holds a contentious relationship with the other man, allowed Daryl to toil away in the woods alone for five years because she needed to stay with her husband...
In addition to factual evidence from the show, the C*ryl Friendship Campaign has been going strong on social media for MONTHS. In her video this morning, twdmusicboxmystery also goes over quasi-recent comments from Angela Kang which are UNSUPPORTIVE of a c*ryl romance. The notion that this perspective is coming out of nowhere, which some fans are claiming as a way of blaming Zabel for either lying or betraying his fanbase (and the actors), is, frankly, absurd.
Please note that I'm not saying that nobody should ship c*ryl just because it isn't canon. That would be silly. I ship non-canon ships all the time. BETHYL is a non-canon ship! I've written whole fanfics for Beth and Daryl (well, I've tried lol, but most remain unfinished). It's one of the funnest parts of being in a fandom.
What I'm saying is that c*ryl is NOT CANON. It never has been. And the people who get angry about this, who want to get professionals fired over this, who think that they're entitled to getting exactly what they want, lest the show perish, are wrong. They're doing it wrong. It's totalitarian and, frankly, obsessive. This is not how you be in a fandom, and my interpretation here of the Zabel interview in conjunction with the C*ryl Friendship Campaign is that they are TRYING to let this highly volatile and frankly unpleasant faction of the fandom down lightly in an effort to get them off tptb's AND the actors' backs. They don't want to deal with this shit anymore. And by the way, they're actually not leading anyone on. They've been insanely clear here, in their rebranding of c*ryl to a platonic ship, as to what's happening and what's going on, and while I really do feel for the good people who may feel let down by this, I am GLAD to see that the showrunners aren't going to heed the demands of one tiny, loud faction of a giant fandom, and that despite the haters, they're going to tell the story they want to tell.
ANYWAY.
Over the past 48 hours, things have gotten...weird. Zabel's interview dropped less than a day after the TWD Skybound social media accounts appear to have...posted a Bethyl edit out of nowhere. @sweetz1919 also posted early this morning, bringing together a few more Beth-related posts on either official accounts or *near* official accounts, which post promotional material, and which are followed by AMC TWD. One of these posts is a repost on twitter by Scott Gimple, who so rarely posts on social media, that any time he does, it's like a unicorn, symbolically notable and certainly important.
Now, pertaining to the Zabel interview, another wide complaint taking place in the c*ryl camp is that Zabel is likely LYING or he is being taken grossly out of context, because if c*ryl isn't happening, AND Isabelle is going to die, then how could Daryl POSSIBLY get his happy ending?
THIS is where Team Delusional comes in. Of course, we have our theories. Most people think WE'RE the delusional ones. And maybe we are! Lol. I don't really care. Most of our theories are crafted through a TON of hard, circumstantial, pattern-driven, and symbolic evidence, evidence taken from IRL sources, and hypotheses made after paying very close attention to what's been going on and making LOTS and LOTS of connections over a period of many years. Me, myself, I've only been here for four, but some of you guys have been doing this for almost ten, and for that, I salute you! As I said earlier, TD has been theorizing Beth's "return" in DD2 based greatly on symbolic and template-driven evidence alone for a while. A lot of what we're seeing now on social media is playing directly into our hand.
Emily in Europe multiple times in a 4mo period, including a trip to Paris, with her latest stint being just a week before "official" filming for season 3 was set to begin? Emily re-recording tracks from TWD? Leaked script pages in which Daryl mentions Beth specifically AND suggest that Isabelle is going to die? Romantic!C*ryl = not happening? HOW could Daryl possibly get his happy ending now? The rest is TD theory, ie: WHY we think Beth will come back to manifest Daryl's "happy ending." Speculation and theories on how she could come back, the connection to Spain/England/France, that's basically all we talk about lol, each of us with our own interests and niche perspectives, all arriving at the same point.
SO while there is still no proof that she is coming back, all of this is a Good thing, actually. For us. Because while everyone is looking around, freaking out, wondering what's going to happen next, we are seeing and able to read a LOT of signs that others ignore. And rightly so! There's no reason the rest of the GA needs to think that Beth is legitimately coming back. That would overshadow Carol's role in season 2, which is significant. It's just important that the GA REMEMBERS who Beth IS, that she was important to Daryl, and that hey, people used to really like Beth, and they liked Beth and Daryl together, and that was hopeful, and nice for him, and he hasn't had much "hope" or "niceness" since, and wouldn't it be nice if he could have that again...? All of these things are really there to do just this: let the c*ryl ship down easy, and remind people that Daryl once held a very strong connection to a woman whose life "ended" too soon, and who has really never been mentioned again.
While I really have no idea what's coming next, I wonder if we'll begin to see more astroturfed discussion on Beth's *death.* How weird it was, what the hell was going on at Grady, etc. If we don't see it in promotional material, we may hear about it in-show. Because if Daryl is casually mentioning Beth (along with Merle and Glenn) to Isabelle's ghost/vision in episode 2.6, then this likely implies that he's told her about Beth before, and that he's talked to her about what happened. It implies that Isabelle knows who Beth is, which would be a truly insane development, since he's literally never talked about her to anyone, including Carol, as far as we know.
So anyway, as usual, we should all just keep our heads down, chins to our chest, keep hope alive, but with a balanced sense of anticipation. We still really don't know what's going to happen, so it's important to be rational, but it also won't hurt to have a little faith šŸ’«

Silly Helluva Boss Rant/Critic
!Spoiler Warning!
NOTE: I Am NOT A Professional Writer, This Is My OPINION On Season 2. If Opinions Trigger You, Dont Read.
i have so much to say about this stupid show oh my gosh where do i even start?
honestly i just miss the older episodes of the show, like season 1, when it was just silly demon comedy and viv wasnt trying to add depth to the characters. even though originally i liked the idea of more depth in the show when episode 7 happened. but clearly viv doesnt know how to write characters. blitz(obviously cuz hes the main character) and verosika(somehow) are the only half decent characters imo. but thats not saying much
i love the shorts though. they feel like mini season 1 episodes.
in episode 7, it introduced a conflict between stolas and blitz. but then it put it off the ENTIRE SEASON til full moon which was 8 episodes. and in those 8 episodes, blitz and stolas just acted like nothing happened?? no mention of it at all?
and full moon was hyped up so much for what? there was like 5 minutes of actual stolitz. the entire episode was basically about the cherubs, agents, and blitz buying sex toys.
and all the conflict is so fucking forced. all these fucks need to do is communicate omg. like in full moon , if stolas let blitz talk to him at the end, we'd be done. blitz clearly has a hard time opening up and being vunerable but he was about to actually talk with stolas BUT NO stolas teleports him outside so they can stretch it on a couple more episodes! and then in sinsmas when stolas and octavia are fighting if octavia just listened, it would be over. but of course, we still need more drama even though the show was better WITHOUT it.
mastermind wasnt all that good tbh. i feel like it needed more time. and the fake out deaths bored me. viv already confirmed that the end of season 1 would have canon stolitz so obviously they werent gonna kill blitz or stolas. but andrealphus' plan made no sense. like, it completely depended on stolas watching tv at the exact time the broadcast happened and there being no live delay. comedy was actually pretty good though. and the stolas poor arc seems fun.
and the only slightly good that came out of the stolitz mess was ghostfuckers(aka the millie episode) cuz blitz was sad abt stolas. but im very glad we got that because i started watching around like episode 2 release(which means i waited 4 YEARS) and i always really liked millie(i love strong women) and im actually quite happy with it even if blitz was still technically in the spotlight more. but also shes pregnant. wow. but i feel like the show needed something like that. because i doubt they can stretch the octavia and stolas shit a whole seasons length. so their gonna need something else to bring drama because they love drama.
and unhappy campers. i fucking hate unhappy campers. it baited everyone into thinking it was the millie episode. but she says like two lines that mean something for her character. and moxie felt so ooc too. it was so unfunny. i watched it straight faced. season 2 hasnt been focused on comedy as much as before and its obvious. but usually i at least let out a small chuckle once or twice. BUT NOT THIS EPISODE. and the barbie wire stuff felt shoved in. it literally came out of nowhere. it was just such a shit episode entirely.
fucking stolas used to be my favorite character but all the self-victimizing shit was so annoying especially in apology tour. he said blitz made him uncomfortable but what about all the times he made others umcomfortable? like in harvest moon, when he called blitz blitzy in front of everyone and blitz is clearly embarrassed?? and when he started talking about blitz' dick IN FRONT OF HIS DAUGHTER??? stop acting like a victim, stolas. you arent. i think maybe he got a little better in sinsmas but barely. and this isnt story related, but stolas' voice actor has such a good vocal range?? like the apology tour song blew me away. i love his voice so much.
oh my god, dont get me started on how viv treats octavia.. i used to love octavia and still kinda do... but now theres 3 episodes of just her being mad at her father and its getting REALLY repetitive. and yea, she does have the right to be mad at him because stolas sacrificed himself for blitz, thinking he would die(even if he didnt) which probably hurt her a lot. but i was hoping sinsmas would show us more of her as a person, like her hobbies(ig they showed her singing but so does everyone else in the show soo), her interests, literally anything about her but her being mad at stolas. i was hoping we'd finally see how her and stella feel about eachother. but no. they talked once but could you even call it talking cuz all stella did was take her phone while laughing and octavia didnt say anything. she was clearly annoyed with her mother but that doesnt really give us a dynamic. and also in stolas and vias argument at the end of sinsmas, it felt like she was purposely taking everything he said the wrong way just for more drama. especially about the happy pills thing. stolas said she was the only good thing in his life so she then says shes an obligation. LIKE NO, hes saying he cares. which yea, he might kinda be bad dad but he does try his hardest and she could at least acknowledge that but still be disappointed.
and stella. i was hoping they would end up doing something with her like giving her a back story that made her so bitchy or something. but then the first ep of season 2 turns her into just a villian. she was just born evil apparently because that totally happens. shes literally nothing but a plot device. and im not against plot devices if they actually do their job. like isha from arcane for example, shes a plot device for jinx development but she actually does her job. shes interesting enough and gives you all you need from a plot device. but stella literally just leaves you wanting more. shes barely a character. we know nothing about her. all she does is start more meaningless drama. shes not even likable as a villain.
now, verosika(AKA best character). shes actually kind of well written? i wish we had more of her this season but also dont because they probably wouldve ruined her too. she only had a 5 minute convo with blitz in apology tour but it made me love her so much more. and her trying to help others after blitz hurt them like he hurt her is so sweet. and then her giving blitz cake, acknowedgling he hates himself just as much as everyone else at this party. i love her sm bro. unrelated but her design is so nice. and she looks so good in all her outfits. loved her fit in the 1 second of screentime she had in mastermind. and i immdediatley recognized her voice in the chrsitmas party song and got so happy
also on the official yt video for the verosika song, the second comment said "I guess Blitzo finally enjoys her music now after, I can imagine, years of it tormenting him with guilt and regret" and i would like to agree with that statement.
i think thats all my criticism. so uh.. bye

Top 10 Media that deserve a reboot
Now, this list might be controversial to some, but hear me out. As an artist and storyteller, I don't believe in bad ideas. Just badly executed ideas. I am going to list 10 media that I do believe had potential, still have potential and had great plot ideas as well as characters behind them, but could have been better. In fact, I believe they deserve another chance because the medias themselves were not bad. They were just done bad, but as the remake of Resident 2, 3 and 4 have shown us, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
Note that there are also spoilers ahead and I will not include the Acolyte on this list because it still ongoing and I will not list a media that isn't finished yet. That isn't fair.
Tumblr media
1- The Mummy (2017) - This adaptation of the Mummy had potential as it was frightening, it had a good plot and the idea of it being the doorway to a bigger universe was good buildup. Also, this take on the Mummy was the stuff of nightmares in all the right ways. I mean, even visually, she was frightening especially with those trademark eyes. I loved that. However, I find they did too much, too fast with hinting at a bigger universe and should have focused solely on the Mummy. With that said, if you just fix that and clean up the other mistakes, it could succeed where the first try failed. Maybe even succeed at finally opening up the door to that bigger monster universe we never got to see.
Tumblr media
2- The Star Wars Sequel Trilogy - I have not given up on Star Wars nor shall I because it still giving us new stuff that is that is good or at the very least, has good potential such as the Clone Wars, Rebels, Andor and The Bad Batch. In fact, even the sequel trilogy itself had potential, but it's biggest mistake in my opinion was that it chose the wrong character to be the hero. It should have Finn not Rey. In fact, I think Rey should have gone down the path of the Sith with Kylo Ren being a red herring big bad. It's second biggest mistake is was the choppy storytelling. The three films did not feel cohesive and the lack of respect for legacy characters was not very nice. I would not have killed off Han, split up Han and Leia, and so on. It needs a reboot with some tweaking.
Tumblr media
3- Spider-Man 3 (the Raimi films) - This one makes me sad because it was not bad, but the forced inclusion of Venom really did leave a mark on it (no pun intended). Even Sam Raimi knew that including him in the film was a bad idea, but his hand was forced. In all fairness, the characters acting out of character didn't help either especially when Peter kissed another girl for publicity. Peter Parker would never do that especially when intending to marry Mary Jane. If this film was rebooted the way Raimi really wanted it to be, it would not only be great, but give this series the jumpstart to continue onto the plans he had for his Spider-Man film series.
Tumblr media
4- Marvel's Spider-Man (2017 cartoon) - I have another article that explores in detail everything wrong with this cartoon, so to keep it brief, it introduced many great fresh ideas that I loved such as turning Harry Osborne into a hero, making Doc Conners into a bad guy from the get-go, the first cartoon introduction of Miles Morales, great story arc ideas and more. However, I find that the story's downfall is that was too watered down and kid friendly. This cartoon should have been aimed at older teens, Peter Parker should have been the focus and the ONLY Spider with crossovers being put to a minimum, taking its time with the storytelling, less humor, more grit and seriousness, making Doc Ock into an adult, and eliminating that gifted school altogether. Spider-Man needs his own cartoon more than ever, but one where he is shown as a hero not a clown.
Tumblr media
5- The Walking Dead TV Series - I have great memories about this show and I was cool with it not following the comic. In some ways, that was its strength, but after season 3, the show lost its way. It stopped being emotion driven, the human element was gone and character development as well as relationship development was gone. Not to mention, the seasonal rot (pardon the pun) began to show. I think this show's greatest downfall was that it went on for too long and should have stopped while it was ahead. With that said, it deserves a reboot where it can retold and remain polished and well written from beginning to end.
Tumblr media
6- The Incredibles 2 - I love the Incredibles in general. However, the sequel... it's a mixed bag. I like that the story was continuing, I liked Screen Slaver and I liked that the world was being explored further, but I did not like that it was just a sub-par retelling of the first film while featuring Elastigirl instead of Mr. Incredible. Don't get me wrong, I love Elastigirl/Helen Parr, but I think the way the Incredibles should have continued (as mentioned in another article I wrote once) was as a TV series where the characters age and develop. I mean, who wouldn't love a family sitcom-superhero TV series? Continuing the story is a must, but with new plots and having the story actually progress.
Tumblr media
7- Every Pirates of the Caribbean film after the first - Like the Incredibles, the first film was perfect and having the story continue was a genius idea, but it should have continued as a TV series. I love Davey Jones and Jack having his own adventures, but I did not like how the character unlikable especially Jack Sparrow. I admit he is a pirate at the of the day, but he was one with a good heart. By the end of the series, he was a horrible person and I didn't like that. In many ways, I wasn't even sure if I liked any of the characters with how they became in the end. Moreover, Barbossa should have remained dead. Period. That doesn't mean this franchise doesn't deserve a reboot. It does and the characters should have developed in a way that makes them likeable. Maybe even have Jack grow up a little. There are so many things you can do with pirates.
Tumblr media
8- Every Robocop media that came after the first film - Hear me out please with this one. I find that all of the sequel media of Robocop had great idea and concepts that could have worked, and still would work. Even the remake had some good points. The problem is, all of them could have been better. Even the video game was a lot of fun, but from a storytelling point of view, it too had the same problem all of the other media did. The plot was not progressing and Robocop/Alex Murphy would keep regressing as a character back into acting like a robot. Robocop needs a reboot sequel where the story actually goes on and all the progress he made as a man in the first film gets carried over to the next chapter. A good example are the comics, but even them too... they fall into the trap of the story being stuck. I want to see a sequel where the world of Robocop actually moves on and where things happen beyond Robocop just saving the day. Most importantly, I would reboot the sequel media as an episodic TV series. Not a film. Alex Murphy's journey is too complex and long to be told in just one or two movies.
Tumblr media
9- Batman Beyond - I can't say there was much wrong with this series. I think it was pretty flawless and Terry McGinnis did indeed come into his own as the next Batman. My only complaint about it is how it ended. Terry McGinnis does not need to be the convoluted genetically modified son of Bruce Wayne. It defeats the whole purpose of him being his own Batman and own man in general. I think Terry should remain unrelated to Bruce and for their bond to just spiritually be foster father and foster son. It was just fine like that. If I also had to find another thing wrong with this series is that... it ended too suddenly and too soon. I would love to see Terry don the Batman identity again. He was cool and I miss him. Plus, there is still so many things that remained unresolved.
Tumblr media
10 - Spider-Man: One More Day - It is quite obvious what went wrong with this storyline. It not only retconned Peter and MJ's marriage and family, it retconned their adulthood and character development. After that, the story of Spider-Man in the comics has just never been the same. While presenting a story where Aunt May was dying and Peter was faced with the choice of saving her at the cost of erasing his new life or keeping his new life while accepting Aunt May passing on was a good idea... having Peter choose to save Aunt May and give up his new life he worked so hard to build was a mistake. Rather than retconning this comic, I think rebooting it with a much better message would fix everything for Spider-Man and the Spider-Man community in general. Just when Spider-Man is about to make the deal with Mephisto, Aunt May herself catches wind of what Peter is going to do and, like in the video games, stops him from making the selfish decision of only saving her. She explains to Peter while getting ill is not ideal, she is old to begin with and even then, got to experience many wonderful things and got to see him grow up and get married. Plus, erasing his life with MJ wouldn't just negatively impact his life, but also MJ's and the lives all those he touched around him. Aunt May would convince Peter that her life alone is not more important the many lives that would get changed without consent. She has accepted that her time has come and that both Peter and MJ must accept it too with grace and not let any devil tempt them to do otherwise. In the end, Peter and MJ turn down Mephisto's deal which does result in a fight which Spider-Man wins with help. It also ends with Aunt May succumbing to her illness and dying, but her soul is at peace and as much as everyone is heartbroken by her passing, Peter and MJ see all the friends surrounding them in their time of mourning and accept that allowing this to happen was the right thing to do. Aunt May was important to them, but so is everyone else who is still here with them, everything they made together and everything that is going to happen after. It also ends with MJ discovering that she is pregnant which drives the point home all the more.
And that's my list. What do you think?

Ngl Im not a big fan of how quickly everything ended
(Spoilers below)
Like they kinda just said ā€œoh yeah Gaia can shoot through his chest now despite them shooting at each other for several minutesā€
Also I find it funny that despite this being marketed as a more dark and serious spy show they end it with a big superhero flight battle with every power weā€™ve seen yet
Also the idea that they both suddenly have full control over hundreds of powers is goofy to me
Idk I just feel like this wouldā€™ve been a lot more satisfying if it had a longer finale
Also Rossā€™s comment to Rhodes of ā€œhow long have you been hereā€ is kinda just a sad way of them trying to pull in the question that weā€™re supposed to have of how long have the skrulls been around, but based on the timeline Iā€™m understanding itā€™s been at most like 1-2 years or however long itā€™s been since the blip. Which like I can get how that could be a big deal but weā€™ve seen him what like once in that whole time ?
I feel like the show shouldā€™ve done more and couldā€™ve been a bigger deal but they kinda just stuck to a pattern of killing someone at the end of each episode
And speaking of killing people i really wish they had made a bigger deal out of the skrulls rebelling against gravik in last episode
Because they kinda just had it in a scene then didnā€™t mention it again aside from fury seeing the bodies
Like itā€™d be cool if the rest of the skrulls had more of a hand in defeating gravik
Im really curious to see where it goes from here, I saw people saying that the marvels is supposed to carry on the story but I have no clue where itā€™s supposed to fit in
Anyways overall I really am starting to agree that the mcu is starting to lose steam, of course here I am staying up til 4 am to watch it anyways but recently content has seemed poorly planned. Iā€™ve said it for a while but marvel really needs to take a step back and plan out the rest of the content in more detail, not letting individual directors make significant changes to the direction of the universe since it results in issues like what happened with Wanda in multiverse of madness. Also cgi workers need to unionize so we can get some actually quality cgi and also so we stop relying on cgi for everything when it could be done much better with practical effects even if itā€™s more expensive. Basically tldr of my stance on the mcu currently is just they need to slow the fuck down and put some time into planning the direction and character arcs of various characters instead of letting character arcs get butchered by constant changes in director
Also last note, on the whole people expecting cameos thing, yeah it wouldā€™ve been cool if we had daisy or Mack come back but while I hate to admit it, it isnā€™t gonna happen, they were always very specific about agents of shield being one-way canon, especially with all the time travel weirdness that happened at the end of the show

SYA Extended Notes Ch. 45
Notes for "See You After"
Chapter 45: July 27-Aug 6: Hero News Network, Shouto's Texts
The texts in this chapter were a last minute addition that more than doubled the chapter's wordcount. Some of it was supposed to be in a later chapter but I moved things around because I didn't want another chapter with only news articles so close to the previous one.
Of course, I do have notes on the articles again if anyone is interested. Or, if you're just here for additional context about Touya, skip to the very end of this post.
Articles notes
Article 1: UA to hold official graduation ceremony at newly-restored campus location
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BNHA 359: Place of Learning
Tamaki's comment about wanting a graduation ceremony might seem like a small thing, but I really liked this small detail in the manga, which showed that even though they're fighting a war, they're still kids. Graduation is a huge milestone, one that they've been working toward for their whole lives, and it's sad that they had that taken away from them. (Honestly reminded me of the kids I worked with in 2020/2021 who didn't get their graduation or the other typical senior year experiences)
I like the idea of them getting to have that celebration after the fact, which would also be a sign that the world is starting to move forward again.
Article 2: Okuto Island Aquarium receives green light for rebuilding
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BNHA 345: Division & 347: Inflation
The amount of rebuilding that would need to take place after the war is kind of hard to imagine, but I like to think that once the essential repairs are mostly completed, people would see the value in rebuilding a place that's not essential, but that brings people joy.
I like the idea that the civilians would step up to help as well instead of putting all of the responsibility on the heroes, as they've done in the past.
(plus, Shouto and Katsuki need somewhere to go for their penguin date when Shouto gets home)
Article 3: Is there a future for quirkless heroes?
(warning: spoilers up to manga ch. 416 below)
This article was longer than I intended, but there were a bunch of things that I decided I needed to include after recent chapters, especially Izuku ending up quirkless.
I've liked this theory for a while because it makes sense thematically, and now that the manga is actually going for it (unless HK pulls some bs out of nowhere), I decided to add it since it works really well with the upcoming section. I don't feel like writing a whole meta on this right now but here's some relevant canon scenes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BNHA 1: Izuku Midoriya: Origin, 412: History's Maddest Hero
It would be interesting to see how the public reacts to the idea of quirkless heroes after the war, and I like the idea of Izuku continuing to be a hero with support gear and a shifting emphasis on teamwork rather than individuals with all-powerful abilities,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BNHA 386: I am here
However, I think there would definitely be concerns about making something like All Might's mech suit a go-to solution for a large number of heroes.
I think it would be interesting to see society grapple with the balance between providing support items to allow more people to become heroes, while also shifting away from the current hero system toward seeing the value of everyday acts of heroism from ordinary civilians that the story has been trying to point out in the background during the current arc.
Tumblr media
BNHA 96: Home Visits, 340: the story of how we all became heroes pt. 3
I also think it would be interesting to see how the world continues to react to the heroes who lost their quirks. We've already seen that Ragdoll was still able to help even after she lost her quirk, and now that Hawks has lost his as well, he'll need to figure out how he's going to move forward (I guess he is actually making an appearance in this fic after all)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
410: Farewell, All For One, 416: Wrench it open, Midoriya Izuku
Probably an unpopular opinion, but I like that quirks can't be returned so easily and that rewind can't be used to fix everything. But I'd imagine that some people wouldn't accept that so easily and would try to find a way to return everything to the status quo. And we already know the HPSC isn't above using children with useful quirks for the "greater good".
Article 4: Debate over Villains' Fate Continues
I'm not going to say much about this one other than that the fate of the villains an ongoing uncertainty in at this point in the narrative. Even though Shouto, Izuku and Ochako "saved" them, I can't imagine that the rest of society would be as ready to forgive. (for the purposes of this fic I'm assuming they all live, obviously)
Shouto's texts with his friends
Tumblr media
This was a nice chance to add some commentary/context on the articles and what's happening in the world, and to show the kids supporting each other.
The first set of texts on 7/27 are a couple of days after the Todofam scene in Ch. 39, which is why Shouto wasnā€™t being super active in the group chat the previous week, as Izuku pointed out in their text conversation. Also, he didnā€™t answer the first group chat because he was at his therapy appointment (referenced in the text thread with Katsuki in Ch. 41)
The second set of texts (about game night) are after Shoutoā€™s unsent letter in Ch. 44, so heā€™s doing a little better at that point.
I really enjoyed writing Shouto's second conversation with Izuku in particular. (Izukuā€™s nervous rambling was fun to write.)
Notice of Prisoner Transfer
Y'all knew this was coming, right? Can't have a Todofam healing subplot without adding fuel to the fire.
We'll be seeing more of Touya in Part III šŸ˜‰
Also, the official reasoning for having him on quirk suppressants is mostly an excuse to give everyone peace of mind, knowing that he can't use his quirk. Way back in in Chapter 9, the article about quirk suppressants says that they're only approved for medical use and forcing prisoners to take a relatively new drug against their will would be questionable from an ethics standpoint, but I'm sure the prisons would find ways around that in the case of villains with certain quirks.

Why the svsss papapa scenes are literary genius actually, Part 1:
So, fun fact, I originally wanted to do a funny little post where I ranked the four papapa scenes in svsss (with special mention to the start of the return to childhood extra and LMYā€™s writing) but my deranged ass decided to go full quirky English prof and turn this shit into a proper analysis.
So, believe it or not, the svsss papapa scenes are actually really important for understanding a lot of the characters and themes of the story. So yes. I am going to go through them all and explain why. Starting withā€¦
Maigu Ridge (spoilers, obviously):
If this were actually my silly rankings post (which I still may make), Maigu ridge would rank dead last in any category related to actually being an enjoyable smut scene to read. Thatā€™s fine, because, to put it bluntly, that wasnā€™t the point.
Itā€™s a subversion of the pressure and idea of the perfect first time or instinctive sexual skill seen in both power fantasy and romance/bl novels. That subversion and the shock of what happens is meant to take us out of the scene and make us think about the characters, the situation, and the tropes we take for granted. Remember, svsss is genre savvy twice over, both in Danmei/bl and power fantasy fiction. It explores both those worlds and the complicated aspects of both (I.e the obsession with revenge). Itā€™s not trying to be a good smut scene, itā€™s setting up the characterization of the couple and the character arc seen throughout the rest of the papapa moments in the extras (more on that in future posts, but itā€™s about SQQ learning to be more open with his desire and pleasure) and exemplifying the main themes of the book (forgiveness and intention)
So without further ado, here is my analysis on this scene.
The notes about SQQā€™s character in the Maigu Ridge scene should be obvious and understood by looking at the broad context of the scene. Like the Without a Cure moment, it shows how much he cares for LBH and his willingness to put his own life and body on the line to save him. It is devotion, pure and simple. However, more depth is revealed when examining specific passages (note all quotes are from the English publications because I donā€™t speak Chinese, so Iā€™m sorry if the translation muddled the meaning).
The most vital part to me for Bingheā€™s character is this line:
ā€œheā€™d done this out of consideration for Luo Bingheā€™s convenience, but unexpectedly he was flipped back around. Luo Binghe jammed himself between Shen Qingqiuā€™s legs, his entire attention rapt on Shen Qingqiuā€™s face.ā€
This refers to how SQQ tries to turn around so that LBH would not see his face during what is about to happen and LBH flipping him over again.
This, I believe is symbolic. SQQ turns around because he thinks that anyone will do and he is the only one willing, but thatā€™s not true LBH wants SQH specifically. He needs to relieve the energy from the swordā€™s influence, yes, but despite that pain, he is focused solely on SQQā€™s face.
The transformation from the stallion protagonist Bingge to our Bingmei is exemplified here better than any scene before it (I would argue it is later topped by the Bingge vs Bingmei extra). Unlike Binghe, Bingmei is not looking for mindless pleasure to escape his lonely life (represented here by the corrupting energy of the sword) he is seeking the one he adores above all, the one who he cares for more than anything. He has found true connection and THAT is what drives him to madness (remember, heā€™s trying to destroy everything to be the only one in SQQā€™s world so he canā€™t be abandoned). Thatā€™s why, even when supposedly in a mad state, he seeks to look at SQQā€™s face, because it isnā€™t about the sex, itā€™s about them, the two of them together.
The other vital part is the aftermath, before even the jade pendant. Specifically, this exchange:
ā€œShizun donā€™t hate meā€¦I didnā€™t knowā€¦I never wanted to hurt youā€¦why didnā€™t you push me away? Why didnā€™t you kill me?ā€
ā€œThis master knows. This master was willingā€
Again, this was an act not born out of lust, like with Bingge and his wives, but something different. Bingge takes what he wants and feels no guilt because nothing was ever given to him, but Bingmei was given the world by one person and struggles with not feeling like, with not BEING the animal or monster that the rest of the world sees him asā€™
LBH had no intention to hurt SQQ
Just like how SQQ had no intention to hurt him by avoiding him
Itā€™s symbolic of their relationship as a whole. Unintentional hurt and the forgiveness that follows. THATS why the remaining papapa scenes are so important. Itā€™s about them learning to not hurt each other. Every single papapa scene that follows builds on this idea of them learning the right way to love each other (remember, their story together is just beginning after the last page of the book) and learning how to not hurt each other unintentionally, LBH physically, SQQ emotionally.
Again, clear themes of forgiveness and intention. The reasons behind why people do bad things (hence the focus on SJ and TLJ as complex characters) and the act of forgiveness and learning from mistakes, which I argue are the two main themes of SVSSS
So while Maigu ridge is terrible in terms of being an enjoyable scene to read, that was not itā€™s purpose. Itā€™s purpose was to utilize the tropes of both Danmei and male fantasy to take us out of those genres (where first times always go well) and get us to THINK about the characters and why they do what they do, their intentions.

Well I'm only like 6 months behind everyone else playing Survive but better late than never! į••( į› )į•—
So here's a quick ramble about my thoughts on the game so far!
I've just reached the early parts of Part 4, but I encountered some vague spoilers deeper in the game by accident which kinda reframe things, so Spoilers up to Part 4 with an Asterisk*
Quick note: I am doing a blind-playthrough right now and once done I'll go back and replay the game (with a guide probably) for the other endings. You don't have to send me any confirmations or explanations on how things work, thank you.
I'm definitely enjoying the game a lot so far, it's so hard to put it down once I get going. I will complain that Part 1 especially seemed to repeat its own dialogue a lot, the characters speaking in aimless circles, which WAS quite frustrating since this is a visual novel, the dialogue IS the whole gameplay, but that issue seems to have solved itself by now and I'm glad for it
I do also find it quite funny how Survive really did just take the basic set up of Adventure, scrub some details out and change the tone of the story before calling it a day. Like that's really funny to me. I don't mind it at all, I love the File Island arc so getting what is essentially a fresh retelling of that story is super fun, especially since the tone is completely different. Grabbing the "fun adventure" and taking it entirely seriously, in kind of a realistic way (like, what would you do if you were in this situation-kinda way) is really interesting, it's a fun re-exploration of Adventure's story and I love watching it unfold.
I will say that I did find it annoying how Takuma and co showed no concern for Kaito and Miu so far. Like, yes, to be fair, they just met the two and knew each other for maybe like 15 minutes before getting isekai'd, so it's understandable they weren't super concerned, but also, they were worried about the Professor, and they knew him for even less time. And yes, of course, they're kids, they're going to want to reach out to the only adult nearby since adults = safety and that's what the kids want the most, but also. Miu is a small child out there on her own. It does bother me how nobody showed any concern for her (or Kaito), let alone seemed to remember them, until Kaito gave them a deadline to give a fuck. Hell, even when the kids heard there was a small child lost in the dangerous woods, none of them offered to go help look for her, instead insisting on going to the fucking radio tower instead. Like!! The radio tower isn't going anywhere, it'll still be there!! But Miu's life might have a timer on it!! God!!
That whole thing bothered me a lot, but in the end, it doesn't matter, it was a weird writing decision but it's not a big deal.
What is a big deal is that Agumon is the cutest, sweetest little thing I have ever seen and I would die for him.
Tumblr media
All the Digimon are cute in fact, I love them so much.
(Although, I'm sorry, but everytime I see Dracumon I lose my shit because the way he grins he reminds me of Sans Undertale)
Also I love the evolutions they picked for all the Digimon (aside from Agumon since he has Options (I got Tyrannomon! āœŒļøāœØ Oira-shock real)), I love how our Sweet Little Puppi Labramon evolves to metal ass Dobermon, and I was fucking hysterical losing my absolute shit over Vegiemon last night. I did not expect that and it was so fucking funny- like sure, new Digimon would have been cool, but also it's so great that they picked old Digimon to use instead of making some extremely tailored evolutions for each kid's partner. It's so fun and I love that, even when/because the evolutions are so unconventional.
Also RIP Kunemon I'm sorry I couldn't save Ryo. You poor little thing, I'm so sorry. (I'm assuming I could've saved Ryo if I had talked with him more? I mean from the get-go I saw this child Had Some Issues so I tried to talk with him every chance I got and I did, I had a pretty decent Affinity going with him by the end, but there was a part where Ryo was being just Too Douchey to Kunemon, where I told him off for it. That resulted with him being so pissed off he left and became unavailable to talk to for the rest of the Free Action section. So I'm guessing it's because of that section that Ryo died? Welp I guess I'll find out on the next playthrough)
BTW it's really funny that the Arukenimon Amongus Sus meme I did for Ghost Game could've been used for Survive too lmao
Also the Gazimon t-posing over the collapsed Professor was funnier than it had any right to be dfjghsjfdhg
The funniest thing that happened to me so far though is that I actually believed Survive wouldn't have Piemon, especially not as a potential evolution/party member. Like I knew Survive would scale back the amount of Digimon they'd use in this game (compared to like Cyber Sleuth), so I just assumed that Piemon would get cut. So early in the game when you could start recruiting Digimon, I, for a long ass time, evoided Gotsumon, since early on the cutscenes and battles alike it was just Gotsumon after Gotsumon after Gotsumon- like I was kind of sick of the guy, so I intentionally didn't try to recruit one. Can you imagine my fucking face when the other night I finally recruited a Gotsumon (after failing to get a Numemon so many times (I really wanted a Numemon!! ;_;)), looked at the evolution possibilities, and immidiately saw fucking Piemon right there, sitting amongst the options. The one Digimon I had really wanted (but didn't think I could actually get), right there, under my nose, this whole time, just behind a Digimon I was avoiding out of spite.
Anyway here's the Asterisk Part, look away if you don't want potential post Part 4 spoilers
Okay so a while back I accidentally did find out that there was a Piemon as a character in the game. I made sure to Look Away before I could learn any real context about the character or what he's like, I just became aware that there is, in fact, Piemon in Survive.
And then I found out (also by accident) that he's voiced by Chiikao Ootsuka's son, Akio Ootsuka
Tumblr media
(Chiikao Ootsuka was the voice of OG Piemon and Apocalymon. Mind you, the last voiced Piemon character we had had between Adventure and Survive was Chiikao reprising his role in the Adventure PSP Game, so the fact that they got his son to do his father's character... That's so fucking sweet) ((Disclaimer I don't actually know if the Piemon/VoltoBautamon in next 0rder was voiced but that's besides the point))
Since I am a One Piece fan, I do know Akio's voice as he's the voice of Blackbeard. I could recognize the "zehahaha" anywhere
So when I reached the opening cutscene to Part 4 last night, I was losing my absolute marbles when we meet the mysterious, shrouded Digimon
Like at first I was like "is that a new Digimon?? A Demon Lord???" since the shroud reminded me of Demon's cloaked form
But then the fucker spoke
And I noticed the fucking card suit decorations on his cloak, and the blue fucking ribbons sticking out from underneath, and the entire shape of the figure being so conveniently shaped in general
And then as the fucker spoke more I could hear the rasp of the zehahaha peaking through and I just
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I KNOW WHO YOU ARE YOU SON OF A BINCH
OH YOU JUST WAIT UNTIL I GET MY HANDS ON YOU, I'M GOING TO WRECK YOUR ASS
YOU JUST WAIT UNTIL I GET TO THAT SHITTY CIRCUS TENT
Tumblr media
Anyway those are my general thoughts on the game so far; having a great fucking time, can't wait to play more

Mousieā€™s absolutely subjective, very biased Top 10 web novels list
Please note that this is hardly aiming to be objective, if one can even be properly objective about a work of fiction. It is 110% based on my preferences, which means this list is heavy on the angst and has nothing set in the modern day. It is also heavily danmei-centric, even though I read way more het romance than danmei, because for whatever reason, most of the danmei Iā€™ve read has been insanely good.
10. Return of the Swallow - one of the two non-danmeis on this list. Smart and nuanced and with a large cast of characters. Our heroine is a long-lost daughter of the family that is brought back in and has to cope with familial struggles, crazy royals, court intrigue, invasion et al. Itā€™s SO GOOD! There is romance with the sexy smart enemy general but honestly, itā€™s the heroine that is the main selling point for me.
9. Transmigrator Meets Reincarnator - the only other non-danmei novel on this list, this was my very first web novel and what drew me into this insanity. This is just a ton of fun, probably the lightest novel on this list, not an ounce of angst to be found. But itā€™s hilarious and features competent heroine and tsundere hero and I will always love it for opening a new world to me. Anyway, our heroine transmigrates into the novel as the female lead. Unlike the original lead though she doesnā€™t want to seek adventures and angst - she just wants to comfortably live with the wealthy, nice husband heroine has. Alas, said husband is no longer nice since he has previously lived this story where he was betrayed by FL and then transmigrated/reincarnated into the past. Oh well, the heroine opens up businesses and makes friends. And eventually, her husband realizes his wife is way different this time around. This actually doesnā€™t have much romance, not until close to the end, but this is so fun I donā€™t care.
8. Lord Seventh - I am only partway through this so far, but itā€™s already on the list because itā€™s smart and somehow intense AND laid-back (not sure how this works, but it does) and is honestly just a really really solid and smart period novel, with the OTP a cherry on top of a narrative sundae. Plus, I love the concept of MC deciding he is not going for his supposedly fated love - heā€™s tried for six lifetimes, always with disaster, and heā€™s just plain done and tired. When he opens his life in his seventh reincarnation and sees the person he would have given up the world for, he genuinely feels nothing at all. (Spoiler - his OTP is actually a barbarian shaman this time around, thank you Lord!)
7. Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (MDZS) - oh come on, how are you even on this tumblr if you donā€™t know MDZS/The Untamed? This was my very first danmei and itā€™s so much fun! I love everything about it - the unreliable narrator, the looping structure, the main OTP, Wei Wuxianā€™s laidback, traumatized insouciance, everything. Anyway, the plot in the event you somehow transported here from 2005 is that the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, Wei Wuxian, was defeated by the righteous sects over a decade ago and fell of a cliff to his death. Only now that same Wei Wuxian opens his eyes in another body and everything that was supposed to stay in the past starts again.
6. Heaven Officialā€™s Blessing (TGCF) - people either love its meandering narrative, picaresque structure and cast of thousands, or find it a detriment compared to much more compact MDZS. I love it even more than MDZS for those very qualities. It does have a rock-solid, darling OTP, but what really elevates it to me are the MXTX trademark combo of snarky/light tone hiding a ton of trauma underneath, the insanely intricate world-building, and what it has to say about the nature of grace and goodness. Xie Lian is one of my top 5 web novel characters and probably in top 10 from anywhere. Oh, and while MXTXā€™s stuff is not as angsty for me as Meatbunā€™s or even Priestā€™s, there are always exceptions, and there is one chapter in this novel that pretty much broke me and sometimes I still flashback to it and feel unwell.
Anyway, what is it about? There is a commotion in the heavenly realm - Xie Lian, the Crown Prince of a long-destroyed kingdom, has ascended to Godhood. That in itself is not so exciting. However for Xie Lian this is the third time (!!!!) as heā€™s ascended and lost his godhood twice prior. And now, the biggest joke of the divine realm is back, throwing the heavenly realm into chaos. And elsewhere, Hua Cheng, one of the four most powerful demons of that Universe, sits up and takes notice.
5. Golden Stage - my perfect comfort novel. Probably the least angsty of any danmei novel on this list (which still means plenty angsty :P) It also has a dedicated, smart OTP that is an OTP for the bulk of the book - I think you will notice that in most of the novels in this list, I go for ā€œOTP against the worldā€ trope - I canā€™t stand love triangles and the same. Anyway, Fu Shen, is a famous general whose fame is making the emperor antsy. When he gets injured and canā€™t walk any more, the emperor gladly recalls him and marries him off to his most faithful court lackey, the head of sort of secret police, Yan Xiaohan. The emperor intends it both as a check on the general and a general spite move since the two men always clash in court whenever they meet. But not all is at is seems. They used to be friends a long time ago, had a falling out, and one of the loveliest parts of the novel is them finding their way to each other, but there is also finding the middle path between their two very different philosophies and ways of being, not to mention solving a conspiracy or dozen, and putting a new dynasty on the throne, among other things. It always makes me think, a little, of ā€œif Mei Changsu x Jingyan were canon.ā€
4. Sha Po Lang - if you like a lot of fantasy politics and world-building and steampunk with your novels, this one is for you. This one is VERY plot-heavy with smart, dedicated characters and a deconstruction of many traditional virtues - our protagonist Chang Geng, a long-lost son of the Emperor, is someone who wants to modernize the country but also take down the current emperor his brother for progressā€™ sake and the person heā€™s in love with is the general who saved him when he was a kid who is nominally his foster father. Anyway, the romance is mainly a garnish in this one, not even a big side dish, but the relationship between two smart, dedicated, deadly individuals with very different concepts of duty is fascinating long before it turns romantic. And if you like angst, while overall itā€™s not as angsty as e.g., Meatbun stuff, Chang Gengā€™s childhood is the stuff of nightmares and probably freaks me out more than anything else in any novel on this list, 2ha included.
3. To Rule In a Turbulent World (LSWW) - gay Minglan. No seriously. This is how I think of it. itā€™s a slice of life period novel with fascinating characters and setting that happens to have a gay OTP, not a romance in a period setting per se and I always prefer stories where the romance is not the only thing that is going on. Itā€™s meticulously written and smart and deals with character development and somehow makes daily minutia fascinating. Our protagonist, You Miao, is the son of a fabulously wealthy merchant, sent to the capital to make connections and study. As the story starts, he sees his friendā€™s servants beating someone to death, feels bad, and buys him because, as we discover gradually and organically, You Miao may be wealthy and occasionally immature but he is a genuinely good person. The person he buys is a barbarian from beyond the wall, named Li Zhifeng. Itā€™s touch and go if the man will survive but eventually he does and You Miao, who by then has to return home, gives him his papers and lets him go. However, LZF decides to stick with You Miao instead, both out of sense of debt for YM saving his life and because he genuinely likes him (and yet, there is no instalove on either of their parts, their bodies have fun a lot quicker than their souls.) Anyway, the two take up farming, get involved in the imperial exams and itā€™s the life of prosperity and peace, until an invasion happens and things go rapidly to hell. This is so nuanced, so smart (smart people in this actually ARE!) and has secondary characters who are just as complex as the mains (for example, I ended up adoring YMā€™s friend, the one who starts the plot by almost beating LZF to death for no reason) because the novel never forgets that few people are all villain. There is a lovely character arc or two - watching YM grow up and LZF thaw - there is the fact that You Miao is a unicorn in web novels being laid back and calm. This whole thing is a masterpiece.
2. Stains of Filth (Yuwu) - want the emotional hit of 2ha but want to read something half its length? Well, the author of 2ha is here to eviscerate you in a shorter amount of time. This has the beautiful world-building, plot twists that all make sense and, at the center of it all, an intense and all-consuming and gloriously painful relationship between two generals - one aristocratic loner Mo Xi, and the other gregarious former slave general Gu Mang. Once they were best friends and lovers, but when the novel starts, Gu Mang has long turned traitor and went to serve the enemy kingdom and has now been returned and Mo Xi, who now commands the remnants of his slave army, has to cope with the fact that he has never been able to get over the man who stabbed him through the heart. Literally. This novel has a gorgeously looping structure, with flashbacks interwoven into present storyline. There is so much love and longing and sacrifice in this that I am tearing up a bit just thinking of it. If you donā€™t love Mo Xi and Gu Mang, separately and together, by the end of it, you have no soul.
1. The Dumb Husky and His White Cat Shizun (2ha/erha) - if youā€™ve been following my tumblr for more than a hot second, you know my obsession with this novel. Honestly, even if I were to make a list of my top 10 novels of any kind, not just webnovels, this would be on the list. It has everything I want - a complicated, intricate plot with an insane amount of plot twists, all of which are both unexpected and make total sense, a rich and large cast of characters, a truly epic OTP that makes me bawl, emotional intensity that sometimes maxes even me out and so much character nuance and growth. Also, Moran is my favorite web novel character ever, hands down.
Anyway, the plot (or at least the way it first appears) is that the evil emperor of the cultivation world, Taxian Jun, kills himself at 32 and wakes up in the body of his 16 year old self, birth name Moran. Excited to get a redo, Moran wants to save his supposed true love Shimei, whose death the last go-around pushed him towards evil. He also wants to avoid entanglement with Chu Wanning, his shizun and sworn enemy in past life. And thatā€™s all you are best off knowing, trust me. The only hint I am going to give is oooh boy the mother of all unreliable narrators has arrived!
The novel starts light and funny on boil the frog principle - if someone told me I would be full bawling multiple times with this novel, Iā€™d have thought they were insane, but i swear my eyes hurt by the end of it. I started out being amused and/or disliking the mains and by the end I would die for either of them.

i'm so excited about you taking asks again ahhhh okay so. if you'd absolutely had to choose. what would be your top 5 cockles moments, and why? thank you ily <3
hereā€™s the thing: there are so many routes i could go down with this, because cockles moments come in all shapes and sizes and formats. these include moments from their panels, their bloopers, the footage we get when they donā€™t even know theyā€™re being recorded, stories being passed down from photo ops & autographs(one of my personal favorite ways to get cockles, tbh, because theyā€™re all insane), and social media(tweets to each other, instagram posts & comments, etc.).
SO! since many a list like this has already been made, and i want to stand out from the crowd, what iā€™m gonna do is definitively give the number one spot to each of these five categories.(i might even throw in honourable mentions because theyā€™re so despicably in love that they warrant that. i really put my whole pussy into this, guys, i hope youā€™re happy.)
disclaimer: these are my own personal opinions. but that also means iā€™m right. so. enjoy.
number one: top cockles panel moment
so weā€™re starting off with a bang, because how do you even BEGIN to rank what atrocities jensen and misha commit at jibcon. every single one theyā€™ve had is damning in itā€™s own right, for different reasons.
however, considering just how much unabashed fuckery theyā€™ve given us to sift through, itā€™s a good thing i do have a personal favorite despite it all. itā€™s heartwarming, the sweetest thing iā€™ve ever seen, AND itā€™s jarringly cinematic - mainly because it has a whole ass arc to it that was years in the making. it might even be surprising to some people, but my favorite cockles panel moment, and what i consider the one that encompasses their entire gut-wrenching journey from 2008-2013 in the most sweepingly romantic gesture possible, is this one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i want this burned into my retinas. i am not even joking. when i'm through with my explanation, let me convince you why this is thee most romantic cockles moment of all time.
first, some history: people call this the resume off, but many seem to forget the botched attempt at a resume off a year prior. and yes, you guessed it: it's during their break up. it's a juicy time period for a reason, guys. it came across as exceedingly one-sided and VERY awkward. let me refresh your memory as to just how bad it was, and just how hard jensen was trying and ultimately failing at winning misha over: the funniest part of the whole resume off in 2013??? every joke/bit had literally already been made/done. they were just going through the motions again, but the difference THIS time...is that misha reciprocated jensen's energy. it. is. fascinating. i want to get into it more detail in another post, and i'll link it here when i'm done, but the main takeaway, i think, and the main difference that showcases how much they've grown in a year, is that in jib 3, misha flat out refused to do an accent, and this time around, he indulges jensen for literal minutes. when i tell you they're crazy, they're crazy. i can't wait to actually dive into it later.
ANYWAY, the resume off culminates in this moment here. and, like, a million things happen in this gifset. actually, more like a million and one. the music starts playingneediremindyouthatthesongissingingintherain(h e l p), misha starts dancing, jensen 'perpetually fake grumpy' ackles lets misha think he's not going to join, misha sits down defeated, but no!!! that was jensen's plan all along(look at his stupid fucking smirk) and he offers his arm to his dance partner who immediately grins like a fool, jensen then leads misha into their kick step, they perfectly synchronise and let loose, and are then very clearly having the time of their lives, hanging off of each other with joy and ease. from their expressions alone i can tell that this moment is so. so. so. so! much more than what initially meets the eye. i mean-misha is fighting back the biggest smile i've ever seen. to me, it reads like jensen is offering something to misha, something that misha kind of gave up on expecting, and him offering his arm like that is like, a surprise to him in the best possible way(and it's so not platonic, let me just say that.) as soon as jensen did that, it ushered in a new era of cockles. this panel is jensen and misha's favourite for a reason, and i think this moment is the biggest clue as to why.
whew!!! ok. that took a lot out of me and that was only point one. moving on,
number two: top cockles blooper moment
cockles bloopers hold an extremely special place in my heart, because it shows just how fucking disastrous jensen and misha are. they are so goddamn infatuated with each other that they HOLD UP PRODUCTION ALL THE TIME TO FLIRT WITH EACH OTHER(???). let me repeat. let it sink in. jensen ackles; arguably one of the most professional actors on that show who puts everything he has into each scene, with mountains and mountains of notes to prove it: would rather hold up production to flirt with misha collins. this sounds fake. it's not. he does it. all. the. time. and here's the thing guys!!! i'm gonna let you in on a secret!!! misha loves it. he loveesssss it. on top of that-misha collins: overlooked because he's pranked and people assume he's unprofessional as well, but his only pranks are in retaliation/off-set, and he rarely if EVER causes problems if he can help it....lets himself get carried away when it comes to jensen making kissy faces at him!!! are you actually kidding me!!! i mean. misha. it's just a face. you've seen it a million times. i don't buy that it triggers something in you that strongly....you like it, and you like jensen's reaction. you can't fool me!!! lisa berry's face in that one gifset shows just how fed up the crew is with their gross, coupley boyfriend antics.
i could pull up so many examples. sooooooo many. but my favourite was sealed since the moment i saw it.
Tumblr media
i actually already wrote an analysis on it but i can't find it :(((( which SUCKS because i really unpacked the whole thing. i'll try to summarise.
basically, a backstory is part of this too!!! jensen and misha both had a really really hard time with this scene(because it's explicitly romantic there i said it), they sat down for hours and poured over their scripts together, they were super super nervous going into filming, both of them, jensen especially, were super hard on themselves for their performances not being true to their characters but they both complimented the other's work(boyfriend moments fr). so, yeah. they weren't confident going into shooting. and how do they get themselves to feel better???? by cuddling each other, apparently.
a lot. a LOT. happens in this specific blooper. to the point that i saw it years before i knew about cockles and it raised all sorts of flags for me.
1) stop pulling my face towards your crotch(as a thinly veiled request that misha would, in fact, move jensen's face towards his crotch, considering it was jensen moving himself there in the first place. also, why so comfy down there guys???) 2) you're my baby daddy i know(in the most intimate voice i've ever heard please) 3) i know, i know, i love you too i didn't say i love you i know but you wanted to say it etc. misha's right, of course. that's what jensen meant.
it just reeks of comfort, familiarity and intimacy between the two, and it's a moment that is extremely sweet and silly at the same time. they're so <3
number three: top cockles found footage moment
WONDERFUL category. truly the culmination of the cockles experience. many people have said that shipping cockles doesn't work because 'they're just onstage you dummies!! they're playing it up for the audience!!!' here's the thing, love. i could not disagree with you more. once you climb your way up the cockles ladder, you soon learn that they are, in fact, playing their dynamic DOWN, not up. they really are just Like Thatā„¢, and they could not care less about the paying audience, if we're being honest, considering how much time they take to giggle with each other and refuse to let the audience in on the joke. and i love them for it <3
anyway, my point is that this category is for all you naysayers out there, all you 'jensen and misha's relationship is just for show and is real life queerbaiting'(?????lordhelp???) oh yeah? ok, explain this.
Tumblr media
he. he. he calls jensen sweetheart. literally enough said. there's nothing to really add here, except, misha and jared then immediately engage in damage control. jared's method is distraction and misha's is retconning('get out of the car, dude') this was what got me to buy into the cockles dumpster for GOOD good. you don't call your buddy sweetheart accidentally and sound so completely earnest while doing it! especially not when that buddy is jensen ackles!!! you think he would let any of his friends call him that? do you?
one more thing; if it was a slip of the tongue, little mouth thing or whatever, you think jared wouldn't have jumped on it immediately??? i can hear it now. 'did you just call him SWEETHEART???' yeah. that's what i thought. you know why he didn't? because it was too revealing.
number four: top cockles autograph moment
i mean, i think we all know what it's gonna be, and if you don't, well, do i have the piece de cockles resistance that is gonna send you over the edge.
if you haven't heard of this story by now, as a cockles, truther, i'm gonna go ahead and get you to read it, because there is no possible heterosexual explanation for any of it, and you're fooling yourself if you think otherwise.
spoiler alert: it's the story where phones weren't allowed in an auto session, jensen nuzzles himself in misha's hair, leans his full body weight onto him, holds his hand, etc. etc. i'm imploding just repeating this back, actually. also, just, the sheer amount of stories from photo ops where they tackle hug each other or slap each other's asses or sing romantic songs to each other or almost kiss is, frankly, a lot. if i could wish for anything, it would be to witness them in person.
and finally,
number five: top cockles social media moment
this one is super difficult, because there's obviously a lot to choose from. but you know what? full send, i'm going with this one:
Tumblr media
i just. what to say about this. how often do misha and jensen watch sunsets together for it to qualify as ā€˜alwaysā€™ ??? why are sunsets synonymous with their relationship??? thatā€™s like??? a very romantic thing????? ā€˜this guyā€™??? the fact that itā€™s a CANDID??? i donā€™t know guys.
that could have been better but i am TIRED so. there you go rose ily

So, much like with season 1, my thoughts on AssClass season 2 are... messy. Too messy for a straightforward review, at least. So letā€™s do it like last time and make a list of all the points I want to mention. Only this time, Iā€™ll put it all below a spoiler bar, since I canā€™t really discuss some of these points without spoiling basically everything. Those of you who havenā€™t seen season 2 yet, consider yourselves warned.
Cool? Cool. Letā€™s do this.
-This season was way more lopsided than the first. The first ten or so episodes were honestly the worst stretch of this show yet, for various reasons Iā€™ll get into momentarily. But once we hit the final exam arc, it basically slams on the gas and never lets up all the way to the end.
-I feel like the fanservice quotient was ramped up this season, and I did not appreciate it.
-The Kaede twist really caught me off guard. I was always wondering why she was so constantly positioned as one of the main supporting roles when she hadnā€™t really done anything, and the reveal that sheā€™s been a tentacled assassin all along explained everything perfectly.
-Actually, in general, all the backstory/answers we got were great. Koro-senseiā€™s past gave such weight to his character and fully earned the far more dramatic turn the story takes in the seasonā€™s back half.
-As fun as the first encounter with the Reaper was, I still really hate the way Irinaā€™s treated. She didnā€™t even really get to do anything in that arc! Karasuma had to save her ass while she watched from the sidelines!
-Karma and Nagisaā€™s big brawl was especially fun for how nasty and in-your-face it got.
-So, did anyone else absolutely fucking hate how Nagisaā€™s mom was handled? The show treats it like sheā€™s just not very understanding or overly strict and Nagisa needs to make an effort to bridge the communication gap between them, but, like... this is abuse. This is straight-up fucking ā€œreport this psycho to child servicesā€ behavior. You do not respond to a parent bludgeoning their kid into submission by telling the kid they just need to try a little harder to stand up for themself. Fuck. That. Garbage.
-Also, Iā€™m not a fan of how the mom stuff poisoned the well on Nagisaā€™s femininity. One of the reasons I liked him as a protagonist is that he was sort of shrimpy and girly and soft-spoken, so different from your typical loudmouth brawler shonen lead. And I wish that was just, like, a part of himself that he could learn to accept rather than a source of trauma he needs to get rid of.
-On a more positive note, Nagisa tutoring that troubled girl was a really sweet subplot.
-This may be a nitpick, but the final arc was way too dark for me. Not as in tone, but, like, the literal scenes were so dimly lit that I often struggled to make out what was going on. How am I supposed to enjoy this giant fucking monster brawl if itā€™s all shrouded in murky shadows and you canā€™t tell a tentacle from a tree?
-That said... yeah, that finale was excellent. Not every Shonen Jump series has the guts to end with a 20-minute-long prolonged scene of assisted suicide, let alone pull it off so emotionally. Iā€™m gonna miss that big yellow blob.
-One of these days, Iā€™ll find another shonen that can write romance worth a damn. Not gonna be today, though.
I think that about sums everything up. In conclusion, AssClass season 2 is a messy, imperfect ride with some damn great high points and some damn shameful low moments. Iā€™d say on average it balances out to a 6/10, weaker overall than season 1 even if it has some of the individual best moments. Oh well, canā€™t win them all. See you next time for whatever 2016 show ends up winning the poll!

Hi hi! So the lost tombs and chronology all super confuse me. So tlt2 ended on a cliffhanger that was not resolved by tlt3 which is ultimate note, but now there is another tlt3 that I am guessing is made by the same studio as tlt2 (but not UN) that actually follows tlt2? And it has the same WPZ as tlt2 (but sadly different WX, ZQL though Iā€™m sure these guys are great). You seem to know what youā€™re talking about so Iā€™m hoping you can help!
UN also ended on a cliff hanger so Iā€™m wondering if theyā€™ll get a sequel from their studio that comes before tomb of the sea.
ahhh hello anon! yes ahaha the dmbj dramas are certainly very confusing--because they keep switching the screenwriters/entire production team between dramas. huanrui did tlt1 (2015), tlt2 (2019), and the sequel to tlt2 (2021). they're also technically the production company for un (2020), but linghe did like all the directing/casting/writing so its significantly different in tone and quality from the other dramas huanrui produced. npss (dmbj author) did sha hai (2018) and tltr (2020), with sha hai being in collab with linghe, so you can see lots of parallels with un and shared cast. (gonna add that i dont know much about the m9 because thatā€™s not what im personally interested in, so iā€™m only going by stories with wu xie & the iron triangle.)
unfortunately, the dramas pretty have no continuity as a result of all the weird shit and multiple studios doing different dramas and messy stuff going on behind the scenes. the author's production company currently has all the rights back for filming future dramas, which is......imo, a good thing for book fans who love the author but a šŸ˜¬ thing for book fans who like the original story more than what the author is now doing with it. I'll uh avoid saying too much opinion stuff though so no more on that šŸ˜…
that aside! yes äŗ‘锶天宫 ā€œexplore with the noteā€ part 2......is the direct sequel to tlt2 and done by the same studio. unfortunately the writers are different and im not sure how much of the production team is the same either. idk how much you know about the novels so brief summary here--for the chinese version, the main story has 9 parts split among 8 books (though the official eng tls have each part being a different book) with some important content being as follows:
official eng title ā€œcavern of blood zombiesā€ (first time wx goes into a tomb, first t3j meeting)
official eng title ā€œangry sea, hidden sandsā€ (xisha seabed tomb, introduce a-ning)
official eng title ā€œbronze tree of deathā€ (bronze tree in qinling, wx & lao yang solo adventure)
official eng title ā€œpalace of doomā€ (heavenly palace on the clouds, introduce bronze gate)
official eng title ā€œdeadly desert windsā€ (golmud, introduce hei xiazi, desert, rainforest, tamutuo)
official eng title ā€œgraveyard of a queenā€ (the rest of that arc, wu sanxing & xie lianhuan reveal, jade meteorite, amnesiac xiaoge and escape, sanshu vanishes for good--also i think the official eng tl covers a couple chapters of the beginning of the next part too)
é˜“å±±å¤ę„¼ (searching for xiaogeā€™s memories in banai, miluotuo cave, i think introduction of wu erbai)
邛ē¬¼ēŸ³å½± (auction/hotel iron triangle fight, introduce xiao hua & xiuxiu, wx & xh on the mountains alone while pz & xg go with granny huo)
finale (rescue from zhang family mansion, changbai mountain goodbye, 10 years promise)
after the main story are the main sequels:
zang hai hua (tibetan sea flower; unfinished & abandoned) covers wu xie a few years after xiaoge has entered the gate, searching to understand xiaogeā€™s past
sha hai (tomb of the sea; unfinished & abandoned) covers wu xieā€™s plan to wipe out the wang family, after zhh
chongqi (reunion: the sound of the providence) covers wu xieā€™s lung disease and how he recovers from that, set after they pick up xiaoge again from the bronze gate. thunder city and everything.
ēÆęµ·åÆ»å°ø&äø‡å±±ęžå¤œ (still updating on wechat) donā€™t worry about this one since itā€™s still a WIP lol
btw between sha hai and chongqi thereā€™s also ten years later (a short story) that covers how wu xie and pangzi pick up xiaoge from the bronze gate and take him home
the dramas Do Not Connect To Each Other At All, which the exception of tlt2 & tlt2 pt2 somewhat, but they go in this order:
ē›—墓ē¬”č®° / the lost tomb 1 (2015): covers part 1 but with major OCs and filler, and includes the auction scene from part 8 for some reason, so introduces xiao hua early.
ę€’ęµ·ę½œę²™&ē§¦å²ē„žę ‘ / the lost tomb 2 (2019) technically ā€œexplore with the noteā€: covers parts 2 & 3 but with major OCs and filler, introduces xiao hua & xiuxiu (and hei xiazi briefly) early. last couple episodes also cover the beginning of part 4. not a direct sequel to tlt1 despite being done by the same studio.
äŗ‘锶天宫 / heavenly palace on the clouds (2021) technically also ā€œexplore with the noteā€: covers part 4 with major OCs and filler (and the same changes carrying over from tlt2). some episodes are identical to the last couple episodes of tlt2. works as a direct sequel only if you ignore the last couple episodes of tlt2 that take place in the snowy mountains. (those episodes of tlt2 were filmed after this drama was filmed, and im still not sure why they dragged the wu xie and xiaoge from tlt2 back to changbai mountain to film those episodes.)
ē»ˆęžē¬”č®° / ultimate note (2020): covers parts 5-8 with minor OCs and minimal filler, also introduces xiao hua & xiuxiu early. the only adaptation that resembles its source material most of the time.
ę²™ęµ· / tomb of the sea (2018): covers the second sequel with major OCs and filler. includes some bits from zhh and the short story ā€œthree days of silenceā€.
重åÆä¹‹ęžęµ·å¬é›· / the lost tomb reboot (2020): covers third sequel with major OCs and filler.
in addition there is the prequel series mystic nine (2016) and side movies for the dramas that the author produced. there is also a single standalone movie--time raiders (2016) that is....well itā€™s. very strange. itā€™s fully subbed on youtube if youā€™re interested?
the best way to watch the dramas is to assume each one is its own self-contained AU set along different points of the dmbj timeline because even the dramas the author himself worked on donā€™t have continuity LOL (and with the exception of ultimate note & sha hai most of the time, also assume most characters are pretty OOC from the novels).
i uh regret to inform you though, that ultimate note will not be getting a sequel unless the author magically decides to not care about making money anymore and sells the rights to film the finale to linghe or something ^^;;;; itā€™s....unfortunate bc un is the most highly-rated dmbj adaptation on douban by A Lot, but itā€™s an adaptation that the author had literally nothing to do with whatsoever.
more information on some of the side movies/stage plays/manhua/donghua here.
summaries of the main novel stories (currently through zhh) here.
edited mtl (some of which has apparently been looked over by native cn speakers) of the novels following where official eng tls end here. (there are many scattered extras as well.)
you can get the official eng tl books/ebooks on amazon or elsewhere(?), but if you have problems purchasing them or like you just dont wanna support amazon or something, dm me off anon. (also i dont want to be mean but frankly the official tls are kinda bad too ^^;;;)
a rough timeline (spoilers galore) for the dmbj novels here. (fair warning im not 100% sure how accurate all of this is--they put three days of silence as 1991 but looking at the info in zhh, it seems like it should have been before the 1950s...but itā€™s more than fine as a general overview.)
anyway i hope that was helpful in some way? dmbj is a Very Confusing thing to get into ahahaha, one of my twitter mutuals has made a few carrds if you think they might be helpful: book, dramas (slightly out of date bc it says heavenly palace hasnā€™t aired yet), ultimate note (got its own carrd by virtue of being the only adaptation aside from sha hai sometimes that most og book fans acknowledge lol ^^;;;)
also anon if anything wasnā€™t clear or if you had more questions feel free to ask again sorry ahahaha im kinda tired rn @.@

Big Hero 6, Volume 1 Review - Something Old Or Something New?
Tumblr media
(Before we get started, I would just like to note that, as always, this is my personal opinion.  I am allowed to have one, just as you and everyone else are allowed to have one.)
I was very excited, as well as a lot of people, when Yen Press announced that there would be a new Big Hero 6 graphic novel coming this year.  The artist was brand new (Hong Guyn An), but it would be based off of the series and not the movie, and as the series finale was a bit...lackluster, it would satiate our needs until Baymax! comes out in 2022.
And I did end up getting the novel a week early.
And while the novel itself is a fun read on its own, I feel like fans of the show are going to find themselves a little disappointed.
(Spoilers for the novel are below.)
Of course, this is where I would normally put spoilers for something thatā€™s brand new.
But, as other people have mentioned on here...itā€™s not new.
And that is perhaps what annoys me the most.  All of the descriptions and blurbs made me personally believe that we would be getting a brand new story.  Again, the press release description: The gang is back in an all-new adventure! Join Hiro, Baymax, Go Go, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, and Fred as they fight to protect the streets of San Fransokyo. Based off of the animated Disney feature film, the comic will tie in with the animated TV show.
ā€œAll-new adventureā€.  ā€œTie in with the animated TV showā€.
Itā€™s not either of those.  It is the animated TV show.
So letā€™s explain a little bit.  Volume 1 has three chapters in it, based off of three of the episodes in the first season: ā€œIssue 188ā€³, ā€œFailure Modeā€, and ā€œBaymax Returns: Part 1ā€³.  The chapters are in that order, which is also confusing because you donā€™t read the book like a regular manga from right to left.  Even if it was like that, the order still wouldnā€™t make any sense.  And if you havenā€™t watched the show, youā€™re going to see Globby in the middle of the book with no introduction and be instantly confused.
Which leads to my second point.
I previously linked a review for the novel, which now doesnā€™t read like someone expanding on details on anything new, but now reads like someone who...well...
...Volume one features a good dose of humor, a reliance on old characters that fans of any of previous iterations will know and love (as well as introductions of what I assume are comic-only characters, including a new young genius thatā€™s quite a fun addition), and a mixture of episodic and arc-style stories, sometimes both within the same chapter...
It reads like someone who clearly hasnā€™t seen the show.
Because if you have seen the show, you would full well know who Karmi is.
None of this is the fault of the artist, though.  The art is actually really good, and captures the anime/manga style for everyone beautifully.  Sometimes it can be a little much (like the fights with High Voltage and Globby can be overwhelming for the page), but those instances are few and far between.
As for the plot?  Well, like I said, youā€™re not missing a lot.  Itā€™s pretty much the plots of those episodes.  If you watched said episodes (and I think a lot of people who would be getting this graphic novel already have), a good 90-95% of the lines, places, and situations are a copy-paste from the show.
There are a few differences (Hiro and Karmi have some cute additional lines in their interactions in ā€œIssue 188ā€³, as well as Hiro starting at the cafe and then going to meet Granville at school as opposed to just being in his lab before meeting Karmi for the first time), as well as some shoutouts to other Disney titles (crowd members from Wreck-It Ralph and Emperorā€™s New Groove), but I donā€™t think youā€™re going to miss much.  ā€œFailure Modeā€ suffers the most from this, IMO.
And I think thatā€™s what frustrates me the most as a member of the fandom.
Perhaps it was a bit self-inflicted, but I truly believed that we were getting something new, not just a retelling of the series.  Yes, itā€™s better than nothing (and as mentioned, weā€™re all starving for new content), and I donā€™t want to be an ā€œold man on the porchā€ complaining, but I am disappointed that we arenā€™t getting that brand new adventure that I was led to believe.
Now, having said that, depending on the amount volumes weā€™re getting, we could end up having something new when everything is said and done.  But who knows when that will be?
Tumblr media
We know that weā€™re getting a Vol. 2, but thereā€™s been no release date announced.  It could be months before it comes out.  And how many do they plan on making?  And do they plan on doing all the episodes, or just certain ones?  If they want to keep going the Obake and Karmi route, ā€œFan Frictionā€ and ā€œBig Problemā€ would probably be their best bet.
Long story short, at the end of the day, this is a young kids/adolescents book, and I am neither of those.  Itā€™s a beautifully drawn book that is very faithful to the series, but almost to a fault.  If youā€™re looking for something brand new, this may not be the thing that youā€™re looking for. (Big Hero 6: The Series Vol. 1 is available in bookstores and digital outlets now.)

SO. Back to the beginning, Episode 1 of Word of Honor. This is likely to be a little bit different experience than the prior posts, when I was watching the eps as they aired, compared to now approaching the show as whole and complete. May be rummaging around for things I missed the first time through, stuff that takes on new meaning set in additional context ā€“ weā€™ll see how it goes.
With that in mind, spoilers for not just this ep but possibly for the entire series. Get out of the car now and come back later, if you havenā€™t seen all 36.5 eps and want to watch it unspoiled.
First thing to strike me, right up front: You know, I think we tend to lose sight in later parts of the show ā€“ when weā€™re getting Laopo!Zhou Zishu pouting so he doesnā€™t have to cook dinner - how terrifying ZZS is in his own right (and by ā€œwe,ā€ I actually mean the show, too). One of the things the first few episodes gets right, I think, is the sense of eerie inevitability and dread created by both the falling lanterns of Tian Chuang and the blowing paper figures of the Ghost Valley, and how similar they are. I think itā€™s easy to lose that - when the lanterns and the paper figures are gone and our charming and adorable couple are busy being charming and adorable at each other, in between varying rounds of being wracked by guilt and PTSD ā€“ easy to lose that this is there too, part of them ā€“ both of them - under the skin. I think itā€™s particularly easy to lose that for ZZS, when heā€™s already done a lot of work, off-screen, pre-Episode 1, during the 18 months he was putting in those first six Nails, to come to some kind of equilibrium, and meanwhile we watch Wen Kexingā€™s entire torturous process play out on-screen. Wen Kexingā€™s story is one of reaching an equilibrium, but Zhou Zishuā€™s story is one of maintaining it, which I think may be less showy, but is equally valuable, just as I value the Four Seasons Manor arc, especially, for giving us a vibe of two adults comfortable in an already intimate relationship, as opposed to the veritable sea of will-they-wonā€™t-they tug-of-war coming-together-for-the-first-time-as-emotional-AND-plot climax relationships that weā€™re usually awash in.
Anyway, straight up weā€™re introduced to an assassin who, we discover, doesnā€™t like to get blood on himself. It looks like metaphorical blood is fine, just not actual blood, but then we discover, well, maybe heā€™s not as OK with metaphorical blood as he schools himself to look. Also that conversation with Li Jingan about her dad having to die because heā€™s a traitor to the country ā€“ I now wonder how much of that particular conversation Zhou Zishu mentally brings to the table in later conversations about his own father being executed for the same reason. Also, wait wait wait. Zhou Zishu tells Jingan that he took Jiuxiaoā€™s body back to Four Seasons Manor and buried him next to their shifu, but I donā€™t remember seeing another grave there, other than Qin Huaizhangā€™s and his wifeā€™s. Script inconsistency, or are you supposed to be lying, ZZS? I mean, would you be so downcast at the state of Four Seasons Manor when you arrive with your husband and son for your honeymoon, if youā€™d actually been there only a couple of years before? It didnā€™t fall to pieces overnight. Also, HAIRPIN FORESHADOWING ALERT. Our first sign of how important the hairpin is, the way ZZSā€™s impassive face cracks wide open when he sees the hairpin that Jiuxiao made and realizes he must have given it to Jingan. Clearly important!
Mmm. Hereā€™s a point for the ā€œPrince Jin is a fā€™kn assholeā€ list ā€“ Prince Jin wants ZZS to deal with Bi Changfeng personally when Bi Changfeng requests to leave Tian Chuang. And OK, ZZS is the leader of Tian Chuang. But youā€™re never going to convince me Prince Jin wants ZZS to deal with it personally because Prince Jin is actually so very furious that Bi Changfeng made a mistake. You will never convince me this isnā€™t a ā€¦ itā€™s not even a test of loyalty, at this point, because Prince Jin has no reason to think yet that ZZS is anything other than the faithful hunting dog on a leash that heā€™s been, lo, these many years. Putting ZZS in a position where not only is he losing the last of the direct disciples of Four Seasons Manor, but heā€™s being asked to (as good as) kill him with his own hands - itā€™s just cruelty for the proof of your power and influence over someone. Also, given Prince Jinā€™s later diatribe about how everyone leaves him OMG (have you considered itā€™s your personality?) (But also Beiyuan! I know who you are now, and yeah, I would have let Wu Xi bride-kidnap me away from this jerk, too), I have to wonder if Prince Jin isnā€™t trying to make ZZS feel exactly as isolated as he, himself, feels, as part of his overall desire to make sure that ZZS has no one other than Prince Jin so that their positions are parallel ā€“ only having each other in the whole world. I also have to wonder if heā€™s not hoping for precisely the reaction ZZS has to Bi Changfeng ā€“ youā€™d rather be dead than be with me? Because that hurts, you can see it on ZZSā€™s face (thanks already, Zhang Zhehan), and I rather suspect Prince Jin wants it to hurt. I notice we get an echo of this later in the ep, with Prince Jin saying pretty much the same thing when ZZS asks for the final Nail. GOOD. I hope it hurts you just as much. I wonder if ZZS realizes this while heā€™s kneeling there in the throne room. Itā€™s probably too late for him to get any satisfaction out of it.
OH, HEY. Thatā€™s HAN YING already, one of the two people accompanying ZZS to put down Bi Changfeng, looking super-pained like he knows what this is all costing his beloved. Han Ying, I really hope you got to tap that at least a few times before ZZS made his break for it. Is that one of the reasons Prince Jin seems to have such antipathy for you, or is it really just that he canā€™t stand the idea of someone whose loyalty to ZZS is greater than their loyalty to Prince Jin, himself? (Seriously, yā€™all, why is there not much much more Han Ying/ZZS fic?) Meanwhile Duan Pengju, omg, this asshole, is already looking smug and punchable. Really, heā€™s kind of enjoying the Seven Nails placement a little too much. Showing your hand pretty fast on the petty evil thing, show.
So, one thing I didnā€™t catch the first time around, is that ZZS isnā€™t just self-injuring to punish himself when he takes the knife to his chest ā€“ he re-opens wounds on all the places where the first six Nails have already been placed, so it will look like the placement is fresh. If you canā€™t tell he hasnā€™t just put them in, thereā€™s no reason for anyone else (read: Prince Jin) to suspect heā€™s bought himself some time before he loses his senses. As far as anyone knows, heā€™s going to fall over with locked-in syndrome any day now. Which just makes the implications of Prince Jin vowing that heā€™s only letting him go for now EVEN ICKIER. For all Prince Jin knows, what heā€™s going to get back is a flesh doll that will just lie there, although I guess on the plus side, ZZS would never leave him again. Thanks, show, I need a shower, now.
ZZS says all the right things to argue his case to Prince Jin ā€“ heā€™s only good as a weapon, he has no skills nor utility for building and governing the country ā€“ and I think partly this is because he just knows the right things to say. I mean, you donā€™t become the Number Two guy in the country, with thousands under you and only one above you, if you canā€™t play imperial politics. But I also wonder if deep down he doesnā€™t actually believe it ā€“ he was successful at building Tian Chuang, but he couldnā€™t maintain Four Seasons Manor and even drove it to ruin. So, Iā€™ll just be over here, clutching my chest, over my heart. Fortunately, Zhang Zhehan provides quick distraction from this pain, and I ā€¦ Yā€™all. I canā€™t. I just. I CANNOT. When ZZS drops to his knees and starts stripping in the throne room. Just. Mmmmmrgh. THIS VISUAL. Although, you want to know what one of the hottest parts actually is? That pair of leather bracers hitting the floor on top of his belt, and ZZS isnā€™t even in the shot at that point. OK, fine, I am willing to read some dirtybadwrong fic with this whole scene premise at its heart, even if it does include Prince Jin. Zhang Zhehan, you are KILLING ME. I might have rewound this part. More than once. You canā€™t prove anything.
Aaaand then we get that gorgeous, painful shot of ZZS riding out into the snow that I know Iā€™ve talked about before (including the way I get an odd echo of Lan Xichen off of it). There are several places in this ep where the cinematography is to die for, and this is one of them, the bleakness of the landscape and Zhang Zhehan (and his FACE) deep in that shadowing cloak against the stark snow as he rides out into freedom and the unknown. Then cut to somewhere green and forested. Interesting that the show starts with snow and ends with snow. That parallel with the imperial cage says some things about immortality that could stand to be unpacked ā€“ but later. Because ZZS is putting his face on ā€“ literally ā€“ and I am once again in pain, only itā€™s not the good kind of pain. Itā€™s caused by that dreadful fake facial hair. There are some things that could be unpacked here, as well, about the fact that making ZZS supposedly unattractive involves a clearly fake goatee, a single aesthetically placed scar, and darkening his skin. Iā€™m going to try to step carefully here, because this is kind of out of my lane, but it is ā€¦ a noticeable thing. That probably ought to be noted.
So, ZZS takes just a moment to turn his (fake) face up to the sun and feel the warmth on it ā€¦ and then with 10 minutes left, weā€™re on our way to Ghost Valley, where thereā€™s some chaos and then Hanging Ghost gets got by a Mysterious Stranger To Be Revealed Later, who chokes him out (remember this). The Mysterious Master of Ghost Valley appears dramatically on his High Ledge to Make Some Pronouncements while playing with some walnuts omg (rolling two of them in one hand ā€“ remember this), and we see his eyes, which are partially obscured by chunky sidebangs, which are farther forward on his forehead than weā€™re going to see later, not only hiding some of his face but making it look more angular. The troops get berated, shit rolls downhill, and another dude gets choked (remember this) as Ghost Valley Masterā€™s hair continues to artfully hide most of his face and he worries about his manicure post-kill (remember this). War is declared on Hanging Ghost for stealing the Glazed Armor, and more chaos is set into motion.
All of that takes literally two minutes, and then we cut to three months later, and no one realizes it yet, but the fam is getting together. ZZS is tits out in the gutter - only beginning his career of being a minx who flashes his collarbones an awful lot for someone who has Very Secret Scars Heā€™s Hiding On His Chest - happily drinking himself to death in the sun (we really need to talk about this correlation of snow and immortality vs. sun and happiness ā€¦). Meanwhile, slo-mo shot of Wen Kexing looking precious and perfect, with delicate pink lips and dove-grey robes, as he checks out the rough trade in the gutter. Oh, the expectations this show is getting ready to smash. We cut from a shot of pristine precious WKX to ZZS holding up his hand, and we get a shot of the sun through ZZSā€™s fingers looking an awful lot like some shots of characters haloā€™d in light that weā€™ll get back to much much later in the show. Chengling appears out of nowhere to be Best Boy. A-Xiang is purple and smol and ready to brawl, and I already love her. I already love them all!  So much! Here are my delicate and precious feelings, show, go ahead and stomp all over them!
