the instant downwards spiral of danganronpa’s female characters after thh is so insane to me. like while thh has its issues and is no way perfectly written its female cast is largely treated like Normal People with real motivations and complex inner lives on par with the male cast. and then you get to literally every other game in the series and it’s like. killing women off to enhance male characters’ development. obscenely obvious pedo bait. literally 0 character. sexualized sa victim. killing women off to enhance male characters’ development. killing women off to enhance male characters’ development.

So Game Grumps started playing Danganronpa V3 (which I’ve been waiting for them to play for AGES) but I got so impatient and I know it’ll take at least a year for them to finish it/release all the episodes so I was just like. Fuck it. I’ll buy the game it’s 65% off on the Switch and play it myself

Anyway I just finished chapter one and I am NOT a happy camper,

I’m finally getting into V3 now that the game grumps are playing it, and oh my god nooooo they killed 1/2 of my emotional support straights!

Y’all I had another weird drdt dream last night where the drdt cast were like digimon tamers and had digimon partners and shit like that, and I don’t remember much from it other than the fact that they were, like, in the digital world and had to save it from some unknown force like in most digimon stories. Anyways, the only things I remember from it is that Min’s partner was Kunemon (which is funny because not only is it a bug but it also has electric powers and you know-) and that Rose had an existencial crisis. So that was interesting I suppose. Anyways-

  I wish that more English Danganronpa V3 fans knew that in the original Japanese version, Gonta didn’t talk in caveman/Hulk speech. He spoke in normal polite Japanese, only struggling with the meaning of certain words from his lack of experience. He did however talk in third person but Tenko and Angie did as well. In Japanese 3rd person speech works and is used to make characters cute and childish. But in English none of this comes across and instead is just distracting. Its obvious that the NISA translators only kept Gonta in 3rd person to insert weird American humor into the series.

  I especially dislike this translation because Gonta is one of the most important characters in ndrv3, especially when it comes to Kokichi’s character arc. Now, instead of being the sweet and naive entomologist who allows the audience to see beneath Kokichi’s mask, he is now seen as nothing but a joke side character. 

  Which not only ruins Gonta’s entire character but also makes Kokichi’s character and intentions even more confusing.

(No wonder people are confused that Kokichi and Gonta got official Anniversary wine together haha)

  To make things worse, they also changed Kokichi’s character by making him more childish and aggressive.(even going as far as changing his sprites on scenes!) I’d say one of the worst mistranslations though was making his whiteboard have “trustworthy?” written below the photo of Shuichi. In Japanese it says something more along the lines of “dangerous?” or “untrustworthy?”. I really don’t know how they messed this up but it was likely because there was a translator who wanted Kokichi to be shipped with the protagonist. The translation error to me was strange because most of his interactions with Shuichi were negative so, to suddenly say that Shuichi was the only one he trusted would feel like a contradiction. It’s also frustrating because, the original whiteboard translation imo implies that Kokichi may have suspected that Shuichi was the mastermind which is SO INTERESTING and gives their dynamic so much more depth.

In conclusion: NISA ruined V3 lol

New personal head-cannon that I'm definitely not projecting for:

Based off the hidden collectable monokumas in v3: Shuichi likes to collects plushies and he has what most people consider to be too many plushies. His bed is littered with giant plushies he will crash on top off after staying up too late working on cases to bother making the bed properly. He's a rich kid who probably didn't have any friends over to visit so he's not had to worry about the amount of plushies he's accumulating. If he solves a really difficult (but not traumatic) case then he'll get a celebratory plushie related to the case in some way, either through his own purchase or as a thank you from his client. He was gifted a crocodile plushie after retrieving that pet crocodile for example.

This is the only thing he really collects outside of the notebooks that he uses during investigations and the mystery novels he reads.

"Hey, what type of things do you like as gifts, it can't be all related to detective work." "Ah well, you really don't need to get me anything." "Aw come on, I want to know what type of things you like. You're getting a gift from me in the future regardless so you should tell me before I get you something you dislike." "...Um, well, I like plushies I guess..." "Aw, that's so cute!"

Upon seeing Shuichi's room: "...I think you need help. Definitely not another plushie." "It's not that bad, is it?" "..."

Kaede shouldn’t have felt so nervous. There was a nervousness she always held, regardless of what she was playing, how much she practiced, who was going to be there. But this time who was going to be there mattered. It mattered even though it shouldn’t have, since she saw the girl literally two days before.

Kaede wondered if she was upset at all.

Two nights ago, she gave the girl a ticket and invitation, asking her to attend. It didn’t have Kaede’s name on it at all, and she kind of acted as if she was going to be attending with her… As Kaede peeked into the crowd she saw her. Done up in lovely reds and pinks. She was looking down at her phone; she looked upset, maybe. Hopefully Kaede hadn’t messed up. She continued to convince the woman that she was looking for her in the audience until she felt too bad to continue because she knew that the other was smart.

She hoped, more than anything else, that Miu wouldn’t leave.

Luckily she could still see her as an announcer began to speak. Her eyes were trained, as if the seat would be empty if she blinked. The only thing that broke the gaze was her cue to step up onto the stage. From there, she focused solely on not looking. 

She sat down on the piano bench in a sky blue color, a long, almost Victorian dress that she no doubt felt pretty in. Her hair laid braided over her shoulder and she was all but grateful that she wasn’t sweating off the makeup she’d put on. It was unnecessary, perhaps, but because she knew Miu was watching her it was worth it.

Kaede would be surprised if she noticed taking a single breath before the final note of the piece was played. She stood and gave the deepest bow she could muster, disappeared off the stage as soon as she had had enough of the applause.

Kaede waited for the inventor somewhere near the exit. Miu was as excited as Kaede had dreamed, and then some. “Holy shit! Don’t get me wrong, I was fuckin’ stewing there for a hot sec waiting for you, but then—shit!” They laughed and hugged, not nearly tight enough. “Kaede, that was beautiful. I knew you said you played piano but I didn’t know it was like that!”

“Thank you! I really worried that you were mad at me—I mean, you were, but I’m glad you liked it! In the end.” Kaede finally got a look at the way Miu was dressed as they separated. A satin slip, fading from pink to red. High ponytail and jewelry that probably produced light in total darkness. “And you look… so amazing and pretty and I wouldn’t have wanted to, yknow, waste all that.”

“Yeah! I busted my ass to look this hot, I swear… and not in a likable way either! But.. I’m happy you like it. Thanks, Kaede.” Miu took her hand and held it, and it was a perfect thing. She was looking at what the both of them were wearing, just as Kaede had done a second before. “There’s totally different vibes going on here, but that’s not something I give a fuck about. You are stunning! A real princess.” Miu goes a little pink in the face as she speaks and the awestruck words have Kaede flushing red. It was too much and not enough.

“Thank you, Miu! This was really fun! I really liked performing for you. And everyone else, I guess.” It was a joke, partially. 

“I think I only liked the piece when you played it.”

“Have you ever even heard it before today?”

“Didn’t need to! Okay, so I know it’s like, whatever-o-clock, but I feel like we should go somewhere else. Can we? I’m not going home yet.” Miu made her way outside, and Kaede was effectively dragged with her. She giggled, lifting her dress to step over puddles on the ground.

“Where could we even go, Miu?” She wasn’t objecting to the idea; frankly, she would spend the whole night with Miu if fate somehow allowed. She didn’t think it was possible now but she wanted it so badly. Anywhere would suffice.

“I don’t know, somewhere! Maybe we should find another piano, so you can play more for me. Put on a show.”

Kaede laughed at the persistence. “I don’t need to play piano all the time. You actually shouldn’t enable me! I won’t stop.”

“Well then I should, right? Why would I want you to stop?”

At least it was a nice sentiment.

cannot overstate it enough that kaede and kaito are foils of one another and therefore are the most stubborn , one-track-minded people you will ever meet in your life . Kaede is definitely more self aware about this than kaito is and maybe knows how to reign in her emotions better if only by a small margin . The two of them will agree on pretty much everything but when they butt heads , they butt heads , and will argue and argue until they're blue in the face about something that probably isn't a very big deal anyway .

Anyway I just find it funny how the two people Shuichi cared about the most were the most headstrong people he's ever known . Yeah Kaede didn't punch him and drag him out for nightly training sessions , but their dual stubbornness is what drove him to action every single time . Shuichi didn't exactly have that kind of tenacity (not in the beginning anyway) so he obviously works best with that kind of dynamic

Reason: Tbh his strong sense of right and wrong and his ability to barrel through anything keeping him from being a hero has gotta be SOME type of Madness Enhancement.

Barnaby Brooks Jr.

Class: Saber

Reason: I WAS thinking Lancer because of his kick, but honestly he could work as a Saberface. Also a lot of Sabers have that ‘thing’ with a fated journey and internal struggle-but-noble-in-heart going on, so it clicks better for me.

Nathan Seymor

Class: Rider

Reason: Initially I imagined them as a Caster, but with the car being a key part of their gimmick and aesthetic as a hero, I think Rider would be the better fit for them.

Keith Goodman

Class: Archer

Reason: Initially I thought Rider, since his schtick is flying, so while it's not a 'vehicle' persay I think it still can apply to him. However, a friend of mine pointed out that Archer could work for him better since his attacks are very ranged-based.

Class: Berserker

Reason: Tbh I can't think of him in any other class. With him literally being a walking tank and all.

Class: Lancer

Reason: Not just because she fights with a staff, but because I think the Lancer Gang would adore her instantly.

Reason: ...I feel like I shouldn't need to explain this, but to any non-Tiger & Bunny fans; his power is shapeshifting.

Reason: I thought Caster but I think it would be so much neater if we let her be an Archer.
