[translation] "Pear Blossom" by Yoshiya Nobuko

Although the fiction of "Japan's first lesbian author" Yoshiya Nobuko was (and remains) hugely popular, of her entire body of work only one short story has ever been published in English translation, and no (other) fan translations appear to exist --- despite the enormous influence of her work on the predominant aesthetics and themes of shoujo manga. The beautiful flowery style and melodrama so famously attached to shoujo manga are thanks in large part to Yoshiya, and I'm very happy to be able to share one of her stories with you now!

"Pear Blossom" is a sparse and vivid short story from Yoshiya's early collection Hanamonogatari ("Flower tales"), a book noted for its use of beautiful imagery and its emphasis on the importance of romantic relationships between girls.

Every trip back to my childhood home I amble round the garden for a while, making a sort of pilgrimage to all my beloved trees. This is likely the last Christmas I'll ever spend here. I don't quite know how I'll feel when my parents move away - I've never known or loved a spot of land better. It's always been this steady presence, a place I knew I could return to and find unchanged.

Anyway. There's severe thunderstorm warnings for this afternoon; my dad is clearing out the gutters. The air is sticky and warm. No cicadas, but crickets everywhere.

hopefully no one asked this but how would thierry act if he was drunk or drugged in some way?? ik he is already pretty unhinged and i feel like it wouldnt effect him much but still wanted to know if there would be a difference

i think he'd just be a chatterbox... LIKE. you know how he already is one? it's just More of that. man going on a drunken tangent for as long as he can hold a specific thought, topics ranging from ANYTHING & EVERYTHING. picture mumbletown.ogg but it's just kevan slurring for 3 minutes. now extend that to 5 hours but at least he's grounded; i don't think he MOVES a lot when he's plastered drunk, so you can escape it at some point i mean, he'll start talking again when you get back, but you Can leave & it's unlikely he'll follow. & if you get lucky enough, he'll pass out

a relatively upbeat(?) drunk but not PARTICULARLY a party drunk unless the mood of the room calls for as much - but even then, he's a lightweight old man... mostly upbeat in mood but depressive in behaviors, thus he's calmer, at least compared to how he is normally.

DRUGS on the other hand? i suppose it depends on the drug...? i mean PCP would do a hell of a lot to you comparatively to alcohol &
