tell me your favorite behind-the-scenes fact about your fics? or alternatively an easter egg or reference you think may be underappreciated? :3
in an early chapter of arpeggio valerie has a dream:
She dreamt of a bucolic valley, lush and green, with a small village tucked into its breast. She lived in this village for seven years, in a house with chickens in the back and flowering trees in the front. She married a kind village man in the second year, had three children, and lost one. At the end of the seventh year a rain began and did not stop until the valley was flooded and the village and every last child and chicken was washed out to the sea.
then when she wakes up it's raining and the city is flooding, which in the moment kind of closes the book on the dream's significance. but the rest of it predicts what happens to her in the epilogue (marriage, kids, dying after 7 years) 🙈 i think of this as more of an easter egg than a full-on foreshadowing since the dream isn't mentioned again! and i'm not sure anyone has ever picked this up since there are 25 chapters between it and the ending

Coming at you all with a little snippet featuring Calahan and @poisonedtruth's Valerie Watson, my favorite deadly gremlin. ❤️ The idea started as a joke under this post.
Calahan followed Valerie down the path leading to the Doverspike Compound, whistling to himself as he holstered his gun to pull out a cigarette and lit it. "Next time, you're going in first, nah, hell, on your own. Sick of almost getting myself killed for basically nothing. Prepper stash? More like Prepper's trash. And no Peggies in sight to at least punch to make myself feel better.", he muttered in between drags. His companion just shook her head at first, then finally replied, "We can always send in Leslie to scope out the places." A snort left him, "Ah, yes, and have Sabrina go after me for getting him hurt. Yeah, Casey wouldn't need me to chase bulls for his fest then." That finally won a laugh out of Valerie, "Your choice, Rookie." They reached the bent that connected the property to the main road, an information board catching Hartley's eye and making him stop in his tracks in front of it. "At least they used my deputy picture. Proud of that one.", he frowned at the wanted poster John's men had hung up. His cigarette dangled between his lips as he searched his pockets for a pen and the second he found it, he added a little correction on his own. "If you see him, buy him a drink. John's orders.", Valerie read what he had scribbled out loud, "You know you're gonna go sober then? Nobody that would step a foot in the Spread Eagle is reading those." Calahan shrugged, "Worth the try. Ain't one to say no to free drinks, dollface." A frown came over her features, not at the nickname but at the realization above his poster was another one, bearing a familiar face. Hers. "Wait…what the fuck is that? Is that my face?", she asked in disbelief, causing Hartley to release a chuckle. "I mean, do ya have a twin I don't know about?"
Just then static sounded from the radio strapped onto his belt, "Going for a prepper stash at Doverspike. Over." A gruff male voice responded, "Be on the look out for Sinners. Over." "Hear that?", he said with a wicked smile, "We're about to have company." Yet Valerie wasn't really paying attention, still frowning and mumbling to herself "How did they even get my picture and name in the first place?" Calahan wasted no time as he headed for the nearest bush that was lush enough to conceal his tall frame and crouched down. "Johnny's got a cruuuuuush.", he sing-songed, his words making Valerie turn around and scan the area for him. "You repeat that again, Hartley, I dare you. The fuck did you go?", she called out and her eyes eventually settled on his hiding spot when he raised a hand in a wave, "Why are you in the damned bush, Rookie?" "Dropped my contact and searchin' for it. What do ya think? I'm blending in. So... shhh. A Peggie is bound to arrive soon. Did ya not hear the chatter?"
Valerie rolled her eyes as she neared him, "You're a child." "Well, I'm about to play deadly hide and seek with some cultist, you in or not, dollface?" "I'm not crouching down in your bush." Calahan bit back a laugh and a crude remark as he sat down and got as comfortable as he could, "Suit yourself. Am I visible, by the way?" "You're doing okay, you might need more leaves though. Put some dirt on your face while you're at it, trust me." He narrowed his eyes and watched her take a spot next to him, "Ghillie suit it is next time. At least then I can lay down, maybe catch some sleep." "And I'd be on the lookout while you're "resting", I assume?", she asked in a hushed voice. "Obviously. And dirt?", he reached out a hand to poke her side but she swatted it away, "Go on, try to convince me you ain't trying to play me and see if I would spread it over my face for kicks. I'd still rock it, you know." "I might need to see that to believe it, Rookie." "Nuh-uh. I'm taking Mary-May out later. So not happening.", he retorted, unable to stop a proud smirk from forming. The moment was shortlived when he felt her fingers touch his cheek and spread something over it. Dirt. He hoped. "There. Better. Guess you were right. You do pull it off. Might want to add it to your beauty routine." "You did not just-", he twirled in her direction, ready to return the favor. "Silence. You wanted some Peggies?", Valerie shushed him as an Eden's Gate truck rolled past them towards the house, "Time to dwindle John's men in numbers a little more, Rambo."

57% into Where Peace is Lost by valerie valdes and im struggling to convince myself not to dnf. its not entirely irredeemable - i like the lush alien planet setting and everything going on with the mc is right up my alley. but there is nothing interesting whatsoever about the (m/f) romance. it feels so... juvenile in a way. and really awkward. like the writer is trying to imitate romance through formulaic responses scraped from pop culture and internet memes rather than writing something unique to the characters. its very strange. the biggest issue i have though is with the nonbinary side character and how extremely childish they act, and how in turn everyone treats them like a child. i know its supposed to be a result of them being 'sheltered' i guess, but this character is an adult. going on a serious mission with serious repercussions if it goes wrong. and there's really no reason for their own friend to continue treating them like a toddler. i dont like it at all.
everything else is just... not bad. but not good enough to grab me, either. i wish i didn't have to wait till my physical copy arrived to see it describe itself as a "cozy space fantasy" on the back, or else i would not have picked it up. any "cozy" label on a book seems to just be a sign that i need to run in the opposite direction.

When Valerie came through the portal, she couldn't decide whether to yell for help or try to go unnoticed. Instead of doing either, she just flew as fast as she could in one direction while still holding Dani intact. Time blended together, and Val had seen thousands of floating doors by the time she came across civilization. There was a small cluster of white stone buildings with lush roofs of blue plants, and a single humanoid ghost sitting on a wall.
When the ghost saw Valerie, she silently beckoned her closer, and Val took the chance. The ghost motioned for her to lay Dani down, and when she did, the ghost recoiled in shock. Val was worried she was about to be kicked out, or worse, but the ghost rushed to loosely wrap some ethereal fabric around Dani's wounds, and then immediately gestured for Valerie to pick her back up and follow.
Valerie had no better options. The ghost sped off at a right angle from her previous direction, and her board was just barely able to keep up. Right as Val started thinking she was going to pass out soon, they came close to a massive ghostly palace. It was mostly neo-Gothic structures made of black stone bricks with white veins, but discordant rooms stretched off it nonsensically. Some walls bore stained glass windows, some were in completely alien architectural styles, some were made of crumbling red brick. It was imposing and, in an odd way, elegant, but above all else it was ghostly.
They were heading straight for the main door.
When Valerie reached it, the ghost clasped her hands politely and sped off. Val made sure to yell thanks after her.
The teal doors opened with an ominous creak, and Valerie felt like she was in a fantasy movie. There was no one inside, so she just accepted that she might be dooming herself and her friend, and… walked. She made sure only to go straight forward and through doors that looked official and public-facing, and hopefully whoever owned this palace would be okay with having visitors.
And now, here she was. Her walking had taken her to a throne room, which had windows on both sides despite being seemingly in the center of the building. And sitting upside-down against the bottom of the dais and wearing a crown was Danny Phantom.
He looked utterly bewildered when he saw her. He shot upright. "Va— Red! Wh— I— Oh, my God, is that Dani?"
Phantom rushed over to Valerie and gestured for her to hand him Danielle. She hesitated, but he looked so anguished, and they were cousins… so she moved her over as gently as she could.
Slowly, he carried her through one of the doors in the wall behind the throne. "What happened?"
Valerie followed him through a branching hallway. "She was with the GIW. Look, can I ask where I am, first? I'd love to know what's going on."
"Right. Sorry." Phantom was frowning, which Val found a little odd. Yeah, he was holding the barely-kept-together body of his cousin, but he usually found a couple moments to crack jokes when he was upset. Now, after she hadn't seen him for months, he was sort of quiet.
One of the identical doors along the hallway opened as they got close. Inside was a fairly normal bedroom, if a bit more rococo than Valerie was used to seeing outside of movies. Phantom gently put Danielle on the bed, where her blood immediately stained the sheets. A bowl of water and a cloth appeared out of a haze in the air, and he started cleaning her wounds.
"So, this is my castle—"
"Yeah, I could figure that one out on my own. I was more curious why you have one of those."
He chuckled a little. Score.
"I'm, um, the Ghost King."
Valerie frowned. "Like that Pariah Dark guy? Did you get his title when you fought him?"
"Got it in one."
"Phew! My next guess was that he was your dad."
Phantom choked a little, then laughed. Good, it scared her a little seeing him so serious. "Yeah, no, it's just a… dominance thing. You beat the King, you get a chance at the crown. And it liked me, so… here I am."
Valerie chose not to think too hard about whether he meant that last part literally. She had more immediate issues on her plate. "So is that why I haven't seen you around? Paperwork?"
He sighed. "A little, I'll admit. But no, I've had some, uh… issues. The last few times I was in Amity. I've been trying to stay away."
That sounded almost personal. Ah, or not, considering the GIW presence. "I guess it's been pretty dangerous there. I'd be trying to stay away, too, if I were a ghost." Val remembered, then, all the things that had happened to bring her here. She… probably couldn't go back any time soon or they'd have a bounty on her head. "…Or if I were myself, I guess."
They sat with that for a moment. Val felt something like dread and loneliness at the same time, like she was being preemptively lonely for her future self. She thought of staying somewhere away from home for long enough for everything to blow over, and the idea almost made her feel like she was in a submarine or a spaceship. In a tiny, enclosed, unfamiliar world, with nothing to see for miles around, and if she took one step outside she'd die before it would make a difference.
She wondered if Phantom felt the same thing, even though he obviously didn't live in Amity all the time like she did.
The bowl disappeared, and in its place materialized some perfectly normal medical tape and bandages. "Well, you're perfectly welcome to stay here until you're comfortable with going home. Everything's human-safe, there's food and stuff… I've got a lot of empty rooms, I don't mind."
In another dimension, away from everybody she cared about? She wanted to talk to somebody, but she hadn't brought her phone to the GIW interrogation. She was worried it would connect her identities. Would she even get cell service here? Probably not, right?
And… who would she call? Her dad, obviously, but maybe he'd be better off if she didn't get him too wrapped up in this. Didn't give him a chance to try to come with her. She should just leave him a note or something. And nobody else she hung out with was exactly a comfort to talk to. Except Danny, but he hadn't been responding lately anyway.
In all honesty, the longer Valerie was here, the more she suspected she knew where Danny had been recently. He'd always been too close to the middle of this ghost stuff.
She shrugged. "Fine, but I want to leave my dad a note, and I get to leave whenever I want."
"Of course! I would never force you to stay somewhere. I don't think I could." The extra medical supplies dissolved, and a notebook popped into the air. There was a lot more appearing and disappearing going on than Valerie was used to. "Here, give me a sec, I need to call my doctor."
That was a delightfully normal thing to say in this fantasy dimension with a half-ghost unconscious on the bed. Valerie just watched as Phantom wrote something in his notebook and then tore the page out. He let it go, and it dissolved into motes of light, carried away on an unfelt air current. Neat.
"Okay, do you have any more right-now questions?"
Valerie shook her head.
"Cool. We can do the note and stuff later. For now, let's go sit down and you can tell me what the hell happened to my little cousin."
"Right."
They moved to another movie-set rococo room in the same color scheme as most of the place, this one filled with giant beanbag chairs.
They plopped down and Valerie tried to reconcile the chill furniture with the tragic story she was about to tell. It didn't work, and she just felt sort of silly as she talked about her interview and the way they put the vivisection on display.
Phantom kept getting madder. He never said anything and he never made eye contact with Valerie, but the unearthly air became still and cold. His expression was blank and he never moved from staring at the same section of white rug, but Valerie could swear she saw tears in his eyes.
When she admitted that it was the Drs. Fenton who were up to their elbows in Danielle's chest, the rug ripped cleanly in two with a sound like a whip cracking. Valerie looked up, and Phantom's eyes were fixed on her like he had caught her with her hand around the handle of a knife in his stomach. Clear, attentive pain. Her suit shivered against her skin.
"You're sure it was them?" he whimpered.
Valerie nodded.
Phantom stood up and stomped toward the door, his whole body trembling. "I'll be back," he growled.
"Wait!"
He turned.
Valerie cleared her throat and double-checked the little theory that had wormed itself into her brain. She didn't find any obvious holes. "You're Danny, aren't you?"
Phantom pulled his lips back, not into a smile, but into some sad expression of acceptance. An expression that said "yeah, but what can you do?" He nodded once. Then he marched out the door.
Valerie fell back into her beanbag and thought.
===
The GIW's first remote rocket-powered device, named Michael after the Archangel and nicknamed Mike by its creators, floated through grey mists until it couldn't see the green of the void anymore. It dutifully observed and recorded its surroundings, from loose piles of bleached bones to flocks of perfectly normal-looking crows. It floated through living, leafless trees and blood-red grass, half-bound by gravity. Its path was fixed.
As it approached, a hole appeared in the ground, hidden by mounds of rock. Michael went down the hole. And it continued down the hole, even as the ectoplasmic air became too thick with darkness to use its visual sensors. It simply switched to sonar and kept going.
After several minutes of darkness, during which Michael's signal back to HQ became steadily less reliable, it reached its destination. The object wasn't visible, but its presence was obvious; a massive sarcophagus, fluorescent with the toxic colors of ectoplasmic paint.
A flexible arm unfolded from under Michael, and it reached above the engravings of crossed arms carved and gently inserted a key into the center. The key was turned, and the signal cut to nothing.

Chapter 23- Alois
***
He stood in the hall for what felt like hours, waiting for a glimpse of Cereza, but when she came into view she was ringed by Falcii. Her head was lowered, and her hair hid her face.
"Princess Cereza-" he called, but she was round the corner and gone without so much as a glance. Maybe she hadn't heard him. Maybe she didn't care. Heat pulsed in Alois's face, and shame. It was thanks to him she was her sister's prisoner.
"May I speak to her?" he asked one of her Falcii guards.
"Her Majesty the queen has ordered they speak to no one."
"I won't be a moment-"
"No one," the Falcii repeated, her eyes hard under the visor of her helmet.
Alois reminded himself that he was a prisoner here, too, even if not officially, even if for his own safety. No one in this Palace, this city, this country would let him forget who they thought he was. He might be a bastard, no true blood of the Belmont line, but that was how everyone saw him, even if they learned the truth.
That was the hardest war to end, he thought, the one that never really worked itself out, the one he'd never truly conquer, not even if he became king.
King, he thought, and shivered, despite the muggy heat. He'd left the cool, pale halls of the residential wing and emerged through a colonnade of arches into one of the many garden courtyards of Valeris Palace. It was an undefined space of lush greenery and elegant pathways, fountains and entwined statuary, firework starbursts of late-summer flowers. Whitebrick steps led to canopies of hanging golden lillem-chain. Birdsong spangled the air, and somewhere in the maze of plants and statues Alois heard a little boy's laughter and the off-key twang of a stringed instrument.
He followed the sound, coming to a little patio, where Marin and Adele sat on the lip of a fountain. Adele had a balalaika, a Buyani instrument she'd never held before, judging by the clumsy way she picked at the strings. Marin giggled each time she fumbled a note, and Adele grinned, and whispered to him, playing with his curls.
Alois leaned against a statue, watching. So many times he might have been resentful of his little brother, but never was. All he ever wanted was for Marin to be safe, sheltered from their father's anger, from all the terrors of the world. Maybe he'd grown up softer than befitted a son of Estara, but there were worse things to be than soft.
Adele glanced up and saw him. "Oh. I'm sorry. I didn't realize..."
"And I didn't want to disturb you."
"I'm afraid I'm not very entertaining," Adele said. "I'm not much of a musician when it comes to this instrument."
She set it down. Marin began picking at the strings, humming along to the notes.
Alois nodded at him. "He looks happy." "He is, I think." Adele rose and joined Alois. The two of them regarded the little boy. "He seems better than he has been in months. He eats more, he talks more. He plays with the other Palace children. Still, I know he's grieving."
She shook her head, lashes lowered. "King Daval was many things, but he was still Marin's father. He misses him."
"It's easy to forget the worst parts of a person once they're gone."
She smiled a little. She looked better, too- her cheeks had filled out, her frame no longer brittle and sickly.
"What will you do?" Alois asked her. "You're safe here, for now, but Estara is your home, and Marin has a birthright."
"A birthright he doesn't understand."
"You can't say you don't want him to be king." Alois paused. "You know he's the rightful heir to the Estaran throne."
She nodded. "Daval was once a boy like him, until the burden of a crown was placed on his head. I don't want my son to end up like that."
"Marin isn't Daval."
"Neither are you," Adele said quietly.
Alois clenched his teeth, his throat tight.
"I have a family. They hold power," Adele told him. "And your mother's family held power, too. You would have support, if that's what you wanted. Both you and I know Estara can be made better, and I want it so. But I don't want my son on the throne, with those burdens, those teeth at his throat. I will not let him be shackled by them."
"You want to protect him."
"Yes."
"So do I. Which is why he needs to become king."
She looked up at him, blue eyes bright in the sun.
"I can't...I can't lie for him," Alois said. "If it comes down to it, I will announce him as the heir. I'll reveal the truth about my parentage. This war was built on secrets. I won't have the future of Estara built on more."
Adele nodded, slowly. "I understand," she said.
"Alois!"
Adele lowered her eyes at the approaching footsteps. Alois turned to see Isabella coming down the path, her brow furrowed and eyes bright.
"Your Majesty," Adele murmured, bowing her head.
"Queen Adele." Isabella nodded to her and to Marin. "Prince Marin. Forgive the interruption, but I'd prefer to speak to Alois alone."
Adele glanced at Alois, who nodded. She gathered up her things and took Marin's hand, ushering him away.
Isabella let out her breath, not looking at him. Her shoulders were stiff, the lines of her face tense.
"How are they?" Alois said.
"My brother and sister are well."
"I'd like to see Cereza-"
"Later. They're not what concerns me now." She paced ahead, her hands behind her back. "They weren't the only prisoners taken last night. The Royal Witchhunter came with them."
Heat flashed through Alois's skin, but he remained frozen in place. The fountain burbled, water arcing through shafts of muggy sunlight. Pollinator beetles droned in thickets of flowers; a bird with a long, curved beak flitted down to rest on the head of a statue, feathers bright as blood. Alois forced his breathing steady. All came to him overloud, overbright. It took him a moment before he could speak again.
"Azare?" he said.
"Not so dead as Lapin thought, it seems. She tells me he made a declaration at his capture. A demand for bata razir."
"Ritual duel," Alois translated.
"An ancient method of judgment in Estara, if I remember my lessons."
Alois nodded, his mouth dry. Why would Azare call ritual duel? Why would he risk capture by coming to Lapide at all? "The Witchhunter came with Luca and Cereza?"
"As far as I can tell. He hasn't said much. Lapin entreated me to allow the duel to commence." She gave a humorless laugh. "Seeing those two slaughter each other may do wonders for morale. I'll need it for the wars to come."
Alois shook his head. "You've seen what Acier's capable of. This blockade won't stop him. The soldiers on those ships are just more fuel for his army."
"They're loyal to Lapide. They know there's a cost for peace."
"And you'll buy your vengeance with their loyalty?"
"Just like you're looking for yours?"
Alois fell silent. Vengeance. Would he have taken it against Acier, if he could? Would he have killed Daval himself, given the chance? Maybe. Anyone was capable of anything; he knew that. Capable of terrible acts, yes, but merciful ones too.
"Then tell me, Alois, if you seek to educate me," Isabella said. "Shall the Witchhunters have their barbaric little fight?"
Alois blinked. "Do you think you know better?"
Her eyes snapped to his. "Maybe I do. Maybe when-"
"When what?"
"When I stand victorious," she said. "When Estara understands which way the winds blow. Don't you see? Lapide has won this war, Alois."
She faced him with a hard grin. "And when I sail my navy into Pavaloir's bay, we'll show Estara the dreams of Daval Belmont are well and truly dead."
"With Lapidaean flags flying. With bolt cannons hot. That isn't a declaration of peace. Do you understand? That's just the Bloodmonger's empire without Daval Belmont to give them hope."
"You can't survive without me. Not as king."
Alois's heart hammered, his face hot. He should stop. Should he stop? No. For once in his life, he was sure. "Would I be a king, then," he said, "answering to you out of fear?"
A muscle twitched in Isabella's cheek. "I know what's right for my country."
"You once told me you wanted my help. Not united under an empire, but as allies. I want a different world, too. A better world. But it must be together, united, or this war will keep going on. Again, and again, until the stars fall into the sea. Is that what you want?"
The look in her eyes was faraway. Alois saw the longing there, the purity of it. "For Lapide, Alois. Anything."
The heat pressed down on him, heavy as chains. His mind raced; his palms were slick. He'd been wrong about his father and had paid for it. He wanted to be wrong about Isabella, too. Could he risk lives on whether or not he was?
"Allow it," he said.
Isabella looked round at him sharply. The red bird alit from its statue in a clatter of wings. "Allow it?" she echoed.
"Let Azare and Lapin fight. Besides, he has her cornered. It's not a challenge called lightly," Alois said. "If Lapin doesn't complete bata razir against Azare, she's a coward in the eyes of Bellana herself."
"And if Captain Azare wins?"
"He won't." Alois paused. His pulse was in his wrists. "Where is the Witchhunter?"
"He's imprisoned below."
"I want to see him."
"Alois-"
"I want to," he pressed. "I...I need to."
The look in Isabella's eyes softened. "I understand," she said, drawing near, taking his shoulders. "Be careful."
She paused for a long time and searched his face, her gray eyes bright in the afternoon sun. "And what about you, Alois?" she asked quietly. "Can I trust you?"
His smile felt like a knife in his guts. He didn't think he could answer her, but somewhere he found the words. "I want what's best for us all, Isabella. You can trust in that."
***
The steps wound down and down into pale rock corridors, vaulted and echoing, empty cells staring back at him the deeper he descended. Alois was under the Palace now, and the weight of the rock above him seemed to press at the air, crushing it from the corridors. It hadn't been so long since he was locked in one of these cells, since he was a prisoner of these pale walls.
His palms were slick. He kept his hands in fists by his sides and nodded to the guards as he passed them. He couldn't shake the memory of Isabella's eyes, her grip on his shoulder. Was he betraying her, like Enzo Acier? Had he already betrayed her by doubting her?
No, he told himself. He couldn't question himself now, like he always had before.
Ahead, a lantern burned by a cell, its door flanked by a pair of Falcii. They gave him a short bow as he approached.
"I want to speak with the prisoner," Alois said.
"Best of luck, Highness," one of the Falcii said. "Witchhunter's not spoken more than a handful of words since the lock fell."
The other cast a dark look into the cell. "I can think of a way or two to make him talk, if the fancy takes you." She spat at the foot of the bars. "No fair day with the Bloodmonger's hound still breathing."
Both Falcii retreated.
Alois went to the bars.
Azare leaned against the back wall of the cell, facing out. His eyes were closed, his hands cradling a clay cup of tea. The rest of the tea set was spread before him on a mat; a feather of steam drifted from the teapot, the herbal scent of its contents drowning out the murk and grime of the holding cells.
Alois stood, his face hot. He wanted to turn and run, but his legs wouldn't move. He stood rigid, fists clenched at his sides.
In the cell, Azare opened his eyes.
"Prince Alois," he said.
Alois forced himself to look the Witchhunter over, and what he saw unsettled him. He was as changed as Adele, though not for the better. He looked ragged, weary, his uniform replaced with grimy linens and leather. There were new lines at the corners of his eyes, a scrape on his jaw, a fox-paw of bruises at his throat. Maybe that was what so unsettled Alois. He looked more human, more real, than ever before.
This man condemned you to die, he reminded himself. He's the reason your father hated you. He's a traitor, and always has been. That's all he is to you, nothing more.
Alois flicked his eyes over the manacles at Azare's wrists. "I see the queen trusts you about as much as she does her brother."
"I can't blame her." Azare paused. "You're...well, Prince Alois?"
"You should know more than anyone I'm not a prince."
Azare let out his breath, setting down his teacup. "How long have you known?"
"The king told me before Acier killed him."
Azare lowered his head, but Alois still heard the catch in his breathing. "I'm so sorry," Azare said at last.
"Are you?" Alois snapped. "Do you really think he would have rolled out festivals and fireworks at your return? He always knew about you and my mother, that you'd made a fool of him and a bastard of me. He always knew you were my father. "
"I'm sorry you had to see him die. Alois," Azare said carefully. "I-"
"You what?"
"I want you to know-"
"I know enough," Alois said. "I know you plotted my death with the king. I know you didn't stop him when he sent me into the ork's jaws. All those years, Azare. For so many of them I didn't have my mother to protect me. All I had was you. And you-"
He cut off. His mouth trembled.
"I wanted so badly for someone to help me," Alois went on, his voice tight. "And I wanted more than anything for it to be you. When I was a little boy, I would pretend that I was your lieutenant. Did you know that? I'd snap twigs off orchard trees for my sword, and everything I feared I'd fight until I felt, for just a moment, that I was safe. But the monsters were fighting at my side. The monster was you."
"What I did," Azare said, "the ways I betrayed you, I can never atone-"
Alois gave a harsh laugh. "Finally the truth."
"And you can never forgive me. You shouldn't forgive me. But I loved your mother, and I loved you. I thought...I thought Estara's victory was worth any cost. I was wrong."
Shame flooded Alois. He turned from the bars. This had all been a mistake. There were no answers here.
"I wish you had died out there in the Great Blue," he muttered.
"I should have. I wanted to," Azare said. "Death with honor is better than life with shame. That's the Estaran way. But if I'd died, I could never put right what I schemed with Daval. I could never put right what I did to you."
Alois squeezed his eyes shut, forcing tears back, then faced Azare again.
"You claim you loved my mother," he said. "You claim you loved me. How do I know you're not lying to me again? What do you want, Azare?"
He advanced on the Witchhunter, unable to hold back his tears. "Forgiveness? Your lofty titles returned? For me to run to you and throw my arms around you and call you father?"
"No."
"Then what? What?"
His fists were clenched, poised to fight. Azare stared at him, then without warning he laughed. Alois blinked. He'd never heard the Witchhunter laugh before.
"What?" he said again, confused.
"You look so much like Margaux when you're angry. She had quite the temper. Saints, she could be terrifying."
Alois shook his head. His fists fell. "I...I didn't know."
"Few did. Even I can't claim to, not really."
"What was she like? What was she really like, I mean?"
"She was...angry. Lonely, I think. Between moments she would stare into shadows, like she was remembering, or searching. I don't know what for."
Alois remembered the shrine, the way he'd felt peace there, the serenity with which his mother had knelt at the feet of the nameless goddess. "Even with you?"
"Especially with me. She wanted a life she could never have, not without destroying what she and so many others had so carefully built. I wanted the same. I would have done the destroying myself, but there was duty to think of. Loyalty."
Azare had a faraway look in his eyes.
"But she was kind, too," he went on. "She loved the common people, those strange and forgotten. Rock folk and seers and heretics alike. And she was proud. Of you, especially. She'd be so proud of you now."
"Don't mock me."
"I see nothing to be ashamed of."
Alois felt his face crumple, fresh tears salty on his lips.
"Alois," Azare murmured, reaching out.
Alois flinched back. "You think a few apologies can make a good man out of you? Get away from me."
He turned, away from the cell, away from Azare. The lamplight seemed to burn in his vision, and he stumbled, breathing hard. His hand shook as he pressed it to his eyes, and when he took it away the light was gone, and the cell. Nothing was left but murk, a haze eating away at the world. Alois blinked, but it didn't go away.
His heart hammered, but it was a distant thing. He put out his hand and pressed it to the cool wall. Is this what I was most afraid of?
He breathed, and closed his eyes, and when he opened them the haze had lessened. It was still there. It always would be.
"Alois," Azare said, behind him. Alois didn't turn. "The queen trusts you, doesn't she?"
Alois nodded.
"I saw the monster," Azare said. "Without Sirin, it would have killed us all. Luca. Cereza, too."
Alois shuddered at the sound of her name. He heard Azare approach, heard him stop an arm's length away.
"It's coming," he went on. "Even now. I know the scope of Daval's weapons. So do you. This monster, this broken god, is worse by far. Sirin can't hold it off forever. The effort almost killed her the first time."
"Why should I care if Queen Isabella blasts the monster out of the water?" Alois said. "What has the Great Leviathan ever done for us?"
"It broke Princess Cereza's curse," Azare said.
"You don't know-"
"I know she died, Alois. She died, and it gave her life again. It brought her back."
Alois turned before he could stop himself. He looked at Azare again, harder, taking him in. There was more to him changed than he'd thought, something in his eyes.
"It brought you back, too," he said, quietly. "Didn't it."
Azare reached out, fast, and caught Alois by the wrist. Alois flinched; the Falcii tensed, but Azare just leaned in, his eyes narrowed.
"They found more in the Great Blue than a way to break the curse," he said quietly. "It takes blood, and sacrifice. But it's worth it. You know what's right, Alois. You always did."
Alois pulled his hand from Azare's, feeling the guards' stares on his back. "I've had my fair share of liars, Witchhunter," he said. "If you're smart you'll find a way out of Lapide before I suggest the queen feeds your neck to the noose."
He turned and left Azare, left the cell and the guards, left the reach of the lamplight. As soon as he was alone, he opened his hand.
A single black feather rested in his palm, downy and delicate. He lifted it to the light. Ripples of iridescence fanned over its surface. A witch-feather. No treasure of antiquity, either. This feather was new, as if fresh-plucked from the wing.
He remembered how Luca and Cereza had strained to reach the balcony, how Cereza had searched the stars. He remembered the night sky, the clouds coming, as if with unnatural swiftness, to cover the moon.
Blood, Azare had said. Blood and sacrifice.
They had a witch.
A chill crackled down Alois's nerves. He needed answers, real answers, not from Azare, nor from Isabella. He needed the truth, and though it struck him to his core with fear, he knew where to find it.
Alois unhooked an unlit lantern from a cell and snapped its mechanism, coaxing its flame to life. He turned- not toward the stairway out, but deeper into the prison, fighting the knot in his throat with each step.

there’s only really two reasons why she should get to know the other bombshells: one, just in case they’re also coupled up with back to the main villa, she’ll need some allies... and two, well, it might work in her favour to have friends, to seem friendly and fun with everyone, not just who she’s trying to graft. she thinks valerie might be her only real competition in here, no offense to the others. obviously she’ll have to properly see how everything plays out, but valeria is probably who she needs to befriend and watch out for. “ isn’t this whole place just sooo lush ? ” adela says, lounging on one of the day beds. she wouldn’t waste a second giving up everything in the uk to stay here. “ and the people aren’t too bad either. who’s it you’ve got yer eye on again ? ”

@jamalwhite12 I made a part 2 of The Mystery Kids!
Chapter 2: The Tiki Monster Sightings
The morning sun peeked through the windows of the Luau Cabana Cafe, casting a warm glow over the bustling group of friends. Valerie stood at the center, her eyes shining with determination as she addressed the team.
"Alright, Mystery Kids, we've got a mystery to solve! Those Tiki Monsters aren't going to catch themselves." She paused, her gaze sweeping over the eager faces of her friends. "Let's split up and see what we can find. Jason, you and Spot take the beach. Kip and Kenya, you two go explore the forest. Sydney, see what you can dig up at the local shops. Lizzy, you're with me – we're going to talk to the locals and see what they know about these Tiki Monsters."
Jason grinned, already itching to get started. "You got it, Val! Come on, Spot, let's go sniff out some clues!" The playful boy and his loyal dog bounded out the door, ready to embark on their seaside adventure.
Kip adjusted her glasses, her mind already whirring with possibilities. "Kenya, this is the perfect opportunity to put our nature skills to the test. Who knows what we might discover in the forest?" Kenya nodded enthusiastically, her pigtails bouncing as she followed her sister out the door.
Sydney flashed a confident smile. "Time to put my fashion detective skills to work! I bet I can find some stylish leads at the boutiques." With a wink, she sashayed out, already mentally planning her outfit for the day.
Valerie turned to Lizzy, who was practically vibrating with excitement. "Alright, Lizzy, let's see what the locals have to say about these Tiki Monsters. I have a feeling they might know more than they're letting on."
Lizzy nodded eagerly. "Hai, Valerie-san! I can't wait to learn more about the Hawaiian folklore. Maybe we'll even find some clues to help us solve this mystery!"
As the group split up, each character embraced their unique strengths and personalities, ready to uncover the truth behind the Tiki Monster sightings.
On the sun-drenched beach, Jason and Spot bounded along the shoreline, their footprints leaving a trail in the sand. Spot's nose twitched as he caught a scent, and he let out an excited bark, leading Jason towards a small cave.
"What do you got there, buddy?" Jason asked, peering into the dimly lit space. His eyes widened as he spotted a strange carving on the wall, depicting a mysterious figure with glowing eyes. "Whoa, this must be a clue! Nice work, Spot!"
The duo carefully explored the cave, searching for any other signs of the Tiki Monsters. As they ventured deeper, the air grew cooler, and Jason couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.
Meanwhile, in the lush forest, Kip and Kenya navigated the winding trails, their senses heightened. Kip paused, bending down to examine a peculiar footprint in the soft earth.
"Kenya, look at this. It's too large to be a normal animal's print. And see how the toes are spread out?" She traced the outline with her finger, her brow furrowed in concentration.
Kenya leaned in, her eyes wide with wonder. "Wow, Kip, you're right! It's like a giant's foot or something. Do you think the Tiki Monsters made this?"
Kip nodded, her mind racing. "It's certainly a possibility. Let's keep exploring and see if we can find any other clues."
The sisters continued their trek, their curiosity piqued by the mysterious footprint.
At the bustling local market, Sydney strolled through the vibrant stalls, her keen eyes scanning for any fashion-forward leads. As she browsed a display of handcrafted Tiki masks, a friendly vendor approached her.
"Aloha, young lady! Interested in our traditional Tiki masks, are you?" the vendor asked, his weathered face creasing in a warm smile.
Sydney nodded enthusiastically. "Absolutely! They're so stylish. Do you know anything about the legends behind them?"
The vendor's expression shifted, a hint of concern crossing his features. "Ah, the Tiki Masks... they're not just for decoration, you know. The Tiki Monsters are said to be the spirits of our ancestors, protectors of the land. But lately, they've been causing quite a ruckus, stealing artifacts and scaring the tourists."
Sydney's eyes widened. "Tiki Monsters? That's exactly what we've been hearing about! Do you know where we might find them?"
The vendor shook his head solemnly. "I'm afraid I can't say for certain. The Tiki Monsters are elusive, and their hiding places are well-guarded secrets. But I'd be careful if I were you, young lady. Those spirits can be unpredictable."
Sydney thanked the vendor and hurried back to the Luau Cabana Cafe, her mind racing with the new information she had gathered.
At the cafe, Valerie and Lizzy spoke with the owner, Lani, who listened intently to their questions about the Tiki Monsters.
"Ah, yes, the Tiki Monsters," Lani said, her brow furrowed with concern. "They've been causing quite a stir around Honolulu. I've heard stories of them stealing sacred artifacts and frightening tourists. Some say they're the spirits of our ancestors, angry at the way our land has been treated."
Valerie's expression hardened with determination. "We have to do something about this. Those Tiki Monsters can't just be allowed to run wild, causing trouble for everyone."
Lizzy nodded, her eyes shining with understanding. "Hai, Valerie-san. But perhaps there is more to the Tiki Monsters than we know. In my culture, we believe that spirits can be misunderstood, and that it's important to approach them with respect and open minds."
Lani smiled warmly at Lizzy. "You're a wise one, Lizzy. The Tiki Monsters may be mischievous, but they're also protectors of our land. If we can find a way to understand them, maybe we can find a solution that benefits everyone."
Valerie considered Lizzy's words, her expression softening. "Alright, team. Let's regroup and share what we've learned. I have a feeling this mystery is going to take all of us working together to solve."
As the friends reunited at the cafe, each with their own discoveries, the stage was set for an adventure that would test their courage, their teamwork, and their understanding of the Tiki Monsters' true nature.

A Storm of Infinite Beauty | Julianna Maclean | Published 2023 | *SPOILERS*
Tumblr media
Scarlett Fontaine is a true Hollywood legend - a singer, actress and beloved fashion icon. But Scarlett dies tragically at just thirty-six years old, leaving behind no children. Or so the story goes...
Gwen Hollingsworth is the curator at a museum dedicated to Scarlett's life. She's also the sole heir to Scarlett's fortune as a descendant of the star. But all is not well in Gwen's world. She's dealing with a messy marital separation and is struggling to move forward. So when Peter Miller, a biographer and photojournalist, comes to the museum with shcoking claims about Scarlett - a life of exile in Alaska, a baby born in secret - Gwen's whole world is turned upside down. Again.
Determined to uncover the truth, Gwen and Peter set out for Alaska together but soon find themselves on a path toward something far deeper and more meaningful than either of them ever expected.
A Storm of Infinite Beauty takes readers on a breathtaking journey from a lush vineyard in Nova Scotia to a rustic lodge in Alaska where old family secrets are revealed and the quest for true happiness begins.
Gwen Hollingsworth is dealing with a lot. As curator of the museum on Scarlett Fontaine, birth name Valerie McCarthy, she finds herself as the sole heir to Scarlett's fortune. Scarlett had never married, nor did she have any children. Unlike Gwen, who is now dealing with a separation from her husband Eric, after their newborn daughter died froma congenital heart problem shortly after her birth. The death of their child took a toll on them both, their grief coming in different forms, leading to their eventual separation. For Gwen, she has refused to move on, but for Eric, he has begun a relationship and moved in with a young woman named Keri, much to Gwen's chagrin.
When Peter, a former pararazzi in LA, arrives at the museum, Gwen is prepared to shut him down. But Peter is interested in writing Scarlett's life story in a sort of memoir, his interest sparked after coming into possession a photo of her at a hospital in Valdez, Alaska. Within that photo is a young man, holding up a near-newborn baby, of which Peter assumes can only be Scarlett's. The photo was taken shortly after a major earthquake, the second in US history, struck Valdez and left utter devastation in its wake.
Despite her initial misgivings, Gwen's interest is piqued and together, the two of them venture to Alaska in order to find out the truth. Through the curator of the museum based on Valdez's history, they find out that man in the photo is named Jeremy Mikhailov, and he has agreed to meet with Gwen during his time in Juneau, where he is now currently living.
He tells her the truth story of what happened: Scarlett, who was still Valerie at this time, arrived in Alaska in 1963 at the behest of her father, a strict former Lt. Col. in WWII. Back home, he told her friends and former boyfriend, Drew, that she had gone to New York to become an actress and had no forwarding information, and this is what everyone believed for many years, despite lack of evidence that she had ever been there.
Instead, Valerie's father left her to a friend of his in Alaska, as she had fallen pregnant by her boyfriend Drew. Their relationship ended prior to her leaving, and knowing that he would find out sooner or later, she told her father. The intent was for her to ride out her pregnancy in Alaska, with his friend Frank Brown and his family, and after the birth of her baby and subsequent adoption, she would be allowed to return home. When she arrives, Frank explains that he has arranged for her to work at the Wilderness Lodge, a location for tourists that is in desperate need of new people to help.
Here, she meets the Wilson's, whom take her in and treat her like their own child. She helps out in the dining room at night as a server, and during the day, acts a tour guide for the toursits on the Wanderer, a large tour boat. She meets and befriends, Angie, who is married to Frank and Carol's son, Joe, who is also pregnant and due at around the same time as Valerie. Their friendship means a lot to them both.
During the fall and winter months, Valerie begins to enjoy her life in Valdez, despite the snowy weather and darker nights. The further she gets into her pregnancy, she knows that adoption for her child isn't what she wants, and despite writing letters to Drew to inform him of her pregnancy, those letters go unanswered. Determined to move on from her relationship with Drew, she decides that she is going to have her baby and stay in Valdez with the Wilson's blessing.
Angie has her baby, a son, named Ethan and a few days later, Valerie welcomes her own son, Cameron, into the world. With the help of Jeremy, she plans to send one final letter to Drew, although she doesn't expect anything to come from it. Jeremy explains that if she gives it to one of the chefs on the merchandise ship, the Chena, they would be happy to post her letter at their next port for her.
It is here that the earthquake strikes, leaving terror and devastation in its wake. Frank and Carol Brown both die, as does Angie. Valerie falls into a deep fissure in the road while trying to get back to Cameron, who was swept away from her after a large tidal wave drove them apart. When she falls, she breaks her leg and Joe, after witnessing his wife's death, is determined to save someone. He is able to pull Valerie out, and others help save him as well.
While in the hospital, she is desperate for word of her son, is ecstatic to hear that he had been found. Jeremy was the one who had found him, and brought him back to the hospital. But, unfortunately, the child in her arms does not belong to her, the baby is Ethan Brown. Ethan is returned to his father, who is grateful to Jeremy and Valerie that his son is returned to him.
Jeremy informs Gwen and Peter that Valerie's son was discovered the following day, having died during the earthquake.
Gwen and Peter are thankful for the truth about what happened, and Gwen feels an even bigger connection to her long-gone relative. Despite being the world's expert on Scarlett/Valerie, she was never able to meet her in person as she had died prior to her birth.
The two of them depart, with Gwen returning to Nova Scotia. Eric is desperate for their lives to return back the way they had been prior to Lily's death, but Gwen isn't as eager to get back. She and Peter had some type of connection between them during their getaway and research into Scarlett's life, but Gwen is willing to try to work things out for the sake of their marriage.
A year later, Peter's book is a huge hit, with plans for a possible movie and broadway musical based on Scarlett's life and music. When Gwen is visited by her former music teacher, she is hit with another truth: that Mr. Thornby IS actually Andrew "Drew" Thornby, Valerie's former boyfriend and Cameron's dad.
He explains that he eventually received the letter that Valerie had written to him and sent the day of the eartthquake. By this time, it was nearly three years later, and Valerie was now officially Scarlett Fontaine, and had just won her first Oscar. He was able to reach her, and she informs him about what happened to their son. Drew is devastated, and despite everything, he never stopped loving her.
But, he went on to get married to a woman, although their marriage eventually ended about 8 years later. Drew doesn't explain why, but it is assumed that his wife had left him for another man, a teacher in a neighboring town. Drew explains that despite everything, he never gave up love for Valerie, and that though people are aware that she died at a young age in Switzerland, she hadn't been alone which is what everyone believed. He was by her side, and had been keeping everything a secret for a very long time.
With their research compltely at a close, Peter once again travels to Nova Scotia. Gwen and Eric officially ended their marriage, after it came to be that the two of them no longer have anything in common, if they ever really did at all. Peter alluded to moving to Nova Scotia, so that he and Gwen can finally begin the relationship that the two of them began in their Alaskan adventures.
I picked this one at random on KU, and I am so glad that I did. What a wild ride! Very emotional, and I feel such a connection with all of the characters (minus Eric, because fuck him, that's why). I may have to try a few of her books because she may be a new favorite of mine!

A Storm of Infinite Beauty by Julianne MacLean
Sometimes you read a book and it is just that - a book.  Other times you read a book and it rocks your world and has you look at things in a different way.  A Storm of Infinite Beauty is just that book!  Julianne MacLean has written a book that sears you to the bone.
“...basking in the comfort that life was a gift - horrendous at times but also beautiful in its everyday miracles.” (Location 4180)
The book’s descriptions were lush with colors and feelings. The storyline was interesting with the two time periods: each allowing for revelations. The book was full of the emotions of hope, devastation, grief and love. Gwen’s character was well drawn and complete.
Gwen was the curator of a museum about Scarlet Fontaine.  Gwen’s familial relationship with Scarlet was a blessing and the museum allowed her to showcase the actress/songwriter’s life and talents.  Until one day a man, Peter comes to her with a picture of Scarlet (real name Valerie) from an earthquake in Alaska.  From here the story takes off exposing both Valerie and Gwen’s private travails as Gwen and Peter search for answers.  What makes this book stand out is that it does not get mired in the negative, but allows the reader to see the hope and love shine out of the gloom.
This is a five star book hands down. A book showing exquisite life and healing. A book to read and enjoy.  A beautiful story called A Storm of Infinite Beauty by Julianne MacLean.

Watching Marc Allegret’s BLANCHE FURY (1948, Criterion Channel, YouTube) is like eating an entire box of chocolates in one sitting. It’s a luscious wallow. Anthony Havelock-Ellis produced the film to cash in on the popularity of the Gainsboorough melodramas and provide a distraction for his wife, Valerie Hobson, who had just given birth to a child with Down’s syndrome. Her role as a poor relation hired as governess to her wealthy cousin’s motherless daughter certainly gives her a lot to work with, particularly when she’s torn between the cousin (Michael Gough, in his film debut; was he ever really that young?), who offers her security and wealth, and the groundsman (Stewart Granger), who offers her pure unbridled sex. She tries to have it both ways, with deadly results. The film has some interesting parallels to GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) in Hobson’s marriage of convenience, her grudging attraction to magnetic Granger and the presence of a female child obsessed with show jumping. There’s even a shot of Hobson in a 19th-century bonnet turning to reveal her face to the camera that’s almost identical to a similar shot of Vivien Leigh. All that’s lacking is the passion. Hobson was a beautiful, intelligent actress and does a lot of solid work here, but it’s hard to believe she’s in the grips of uncontrollable ardor. Granger is quite good, and Gough is priggish enough you’re not going to miss him when he’s gone. And the whole thing looks scrumptious in Guy Green and Geoffrey Unsworth’s Technicolor cinematography. Clifton Parker did the lush, symphonic score that pushes the whole thing into the kingdom of divine decadence.

HEAR: Jubilant Jams | Kibi James - “Bender”
Tumblr media
Kibi James is set to release their upcoming full-length album Delusions and we are thrilled to hear their most recent single “Bender”—it’s a smooth, jubilant and charming bedroom pop single. The song is catchy and infectious. The video is wild! Check it out below and let us know your thoughts: Read More: bi-lingual musical trio, Kibi James, shares their latest single "bender," the third offering from their upcoming full-length album, delusions, out August 25th via Bayonet Records. The song follows previous singles "fuerza" and "go outside," filmed in Prado Colombia, and is introduced with a ukulele leading the track, evoking a sense of the natural environments that have informed the creative process of their forthcoming project. Reflecting on the song, the band notes, "'bender' is the anthem of our album. It's a shared delusion that feels like an invitation. It’s like a culmination of all the best parts of a bender with your friends. Pure bliss." The band, consists of Mari (guitar, keys), MJ Corless (bass) and Pomi Abebe (drums). Co-produced, recorded and mixed by Drew Vandenberg (Faye Webster, SPELLLING, Toro y Moi) at Chase Park Studios in Athens, GA, and mastered by Heba Kadry, the bands debut album delusions is laden with vividly lush portraits of the places they call home – Atlanta, their community, their physical house they share together, and the sense of home they find in one another. Speaking on the title of the album, MJ says “For artists trying to survive in this capitalist world, I think some level of delusion is necessary.” While the outside world is often a source of chaos, Kibi James finds security and intimacy in their shared domestic life together – the details of which come in the form of the intimate narratives and memories that make up delusions. Together they channel the blissful sweetness of ‘90s indie pop and shibuya-kei, calling to mind the voices of Sweet Trip’s Valerie Cooper, 800 cherries and Saint Etienne. They harmonize in both English and Spanish as their voices cozily intertwine, singing of their hopes for the future over hazy, treated guitars and the gentle pattering of drums. The sensual palette of Kibi James is one adorned with pastel hues and dense greenery, exploring the nuances of relationships between people and the world, interpersonally and ecologically. Listen to "bender" above and stay tuned for more from Kibi James coming soon. Read the full article
