.300 Blackout Keeps Calling My Name

The .300 Blackout cartridge is one of those calibers that people love to hate. It’s a short range cartridge for the most part with maximum effective range out to maybe 200 yards depending on the load of course. The .300 Blackout has been around for a couple of decades now but really came into it’s own probably 10-12 years ago. You can use bullet weights ranging from 110 grain all the way up to 220 grain. Barrel lengths are also very wide ranging in length. Barrels typically are very short, as short as 7.5 inches all the way up to 16 inch barrels. Most common though you’ll see the .300 Blackout being used in the shorter barrel variety at around 10 inches or less. Unlike the 5.56 cartridge in which the case is roughly based off of, the powder from the .300 Blackout fully burns in these shorter barrel lengths. There’s really no advantage at the longer 16 inch barrel length in terms of velocity. Another advantage of the .300 Blackout is how well they are to suppress. The larger bullets will run subsonic so adding a suppressor makes these run very comfortably quiet which is great on your hearing.

I built the very first .300 Blackout build about 10 years ago. I picked up a receiver and most of the small parts from Brownells. I went with an 8.5” barrel to make a .300 Blackout pistol version that I could later suppress. My ultimate goal for this particular build was to use it for a short range deer hunting rig. I topped it off with a Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4x LPVO optic and to this day that optic is still on this particular setup. It’s been one heck of a deer setup too as I’ve harvested a number of deer over the years with this build. Before I added a suppressor I was using Barnes 110gr but once suppressed I switched over to the Hornady 190gr SubX loads which run super well. All of the deer I’ve harvested have been under 100 yards and I’ve never lost one. The second build I did was a Brownells BRN-180 with an Aluma Hyde camouflage finish. Love that thing! Being piston driven, it’s a smooth shooter always running any loads I put through it including my .300 Blackout reloads. Speaking of reloads, the .300 Blackout is a reloader’s dream with so many recipes and components available. I’ve specifically concentrated on the heavy 200gr stuff, but there’s plenty of other options. You can even take 5.56 brass and trim resize them for .300 Blackout if needed.

So what’s next on the .300 Blackout agenda? I’ve been considering another .300 Blackout build just because I love them so much. It always excited me to talk .300 Blackout with folk. One thought I’ve had was to build another Geissele SBR but in .300 Blackout for a defensive rifle. Another idea that I’ve had is to do another BRN-180, but this time a purpose built defensive setup using the ADM BRN-180 lower receiver. Wherever this next .300 Blackout project takes me I’m sure it’ll be epic!
