In light of the reveal of Abel's complete design, have this dumb doodle i made on magma a week ago based on an interaction my bsf @plushtoothpanic acted out while we were joking about Vivziepop's lack of diversity(the dog character is his sona).
Also, rant below involving Abel, I don't want this to become a critical blog since Hazbin has held a special place in my heart since 2021, but oh my God I am so sick of the shit that Vivzie is pulling
Making Adam white was already quite a choice, I had a pretty specific vision of a dark-skinned curly-haired man before his face was revealed. Although I had been expecting a biblically-accurate Adam, I didn't mind having him white as long as Eve wasn't made white as well.
Abel's design throws this out the window.
First let's focus on Abel being the child of Adam and Eve. This means Eve is white, and likely also blonde. Historically, the first humans were East/South African, and not white. Ok, well what about biblically? The popular depictions of biblical figures are mainly European interpretations from when Europe adapted the Bible and made all the figures pale, like them. It's more likely that the dark-skinned writers that originally complied stories into the Bible meant for the figures to look more like them. It would make more sense if one or both of them was dark.
Saint Peter is a whole nother' piss drawer that I don't wanna open, but whitewashing an actual human being that existed is just so gross.
Now, the other thing I wanna talk about that talks less about race and more about theories surrounding Abel being blonde... People were already theorizing that maybe one of the kids was Lucifer's spawn because of the implied affair with Eve. It wasn't the most popular theory but now it's making a comeback with the reveal of Abel's complete design.
I dislike this theory(besides the fact that it's just stupid) because
1. Cain is Adam and Eve's firstborn son. Abel is their second. Even if Eve and Lucifer had an affair in Eden, that would result in Cain, not Abel. Also we aren't entirely aware of Lucifer's powers involving entering the living world but I doubt he can canonically go there, or at least not after Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden, since Hell was made as a punishment for him and any mortal that sins and I don't think he would be able to waltz back to Earth that easily. I suppose maybe they could be twins and Cain could just have been the first one born, but I don't think that's usually what "firstborn" implies, or how it's generally interpreted?
2. This is gonna look really bad on Lucifer's part?? Like, this implies that Lilith left Adam for Lucifer, then Lucifer got with Eve(possibly cheating on Lilith if she wasn't aware/didn't consent to the affair) and cucked Adam for a second time???? Lucifer would straight-up be getting the Stolas treatment where they keep making him more and more shitty then try to justify it anyways. Cmon guys.. I wanna be able to cheer for Lucifer too but he doesn't seem remorseful at all for anything he's done, more like he's been playing the victim for a decamillennium despite being a possible cheater and the one who destroyed Adam and Eve's life.
3. How would this be plot-relevant at all?? My closest guess is to make a disconnect from Adam like "oh he was never my ACTUAL father anyways" and also to try and make a bond with Abel and Charlie being blood-related so he would decide to side with her or something. Also on top of that I hate the whole trope of someone suddenly not giving a fuck about the parents who raised them in favor of their biological parents who didn't raise them. It's a dumb trope and if this theory is canon and they pull something like that.... ughh.
yeah. Overall, too many Aryans, pleasepleasepleaseplease pleaseeep please don't make Eve white even though I know they will anyways, and if that stupid theory is true then Lucifer is a snake-tongued, home-wrecking, unfaithful pile of shit that is disguised as a poor depressed dad that the fandom eats up and woobifies. Not that I don't want him to have flaws, but he doesn't seem very sorry for what he did(he has his whole snake and apple motif, that's like saying you feel guilty for a murder then using the hyper-specific murder weapon as your symbol) and also Abel being his son would be such an unnecessary plotline that would make him look soooo so so so so much worse because he wouldn't have much of a wholesome excuse for that.
The only good things I'm getting out of this are that I can post about Abel without having to tag it as leaks and also people are cracking jokes about Abel being the son of Lucifer and Adam

Chapter One: The First Time
Dean was in a mood. Sam had just left for Stanford—and God, that was one Hell of a fight to break up between his brother and John—and his father…. Well, John had been trusting Dean to go on hunts by himself for a while now. Like a good little soldier, doing what daddy said.
After Sam left, John just muttered about how he had a job to do and he had damned well go do it. So… Dean hopped into the Impala and started looking for newspapers to track down the next monster to hunt.
There was a hint of something—a missing person’s case—that didn’t sit right with Dean. He made some phone calls, impersonated an official or two, the usual—and off he went to a cozy little city in Indiana, home of Purdue University.
Go Boilers! Right?
Ugh.
Not that it hurt to see all the hot chicks. Man, college girls….
His missing person’s case was, unfortunately for his libido, not one of the Sororities. He wished it was. He knew pornos weren’t accurate, but wouldn’t it have been nice if they were?
God. He needed to get laid.
He yanked his attention back to the missing person’s case, and realized that while he was driving, investigating, and basically from the date of the first case, three more had gone missing. The monster, whatever it was, was being systematic.
Every single one of the missing persons came from the same floor as this one off-campus apartment complex. If you could call a whacked up house divided into four individual studios an apartment complex.
He tracked down the very last person from that complex, a pretty teenage girl, fresh to college named Y/N.
“So let me get this straight,” he said, trying very hard to stay focused on the hunt and not flirt with her. “You don’t know why the others have gone missing?”
“That’s right,” she said, regarding this ridiculously young looking man dubiously. He didn’t dress like an investigator nor did he act like one.
“Did you know them well?”
She shook her head, fidgeting on the sofa. In the course of two weeks, four people in the building had gone missing. She was the last one left and was, quite honestly, freaking out.
Four studio apartments, four people. Two of them had just moved in together. She was, literally, the last one standing.
“Any weird people hanging around? Repair folks? Maintenance guys? Anything?”
She shook her head again. “No. The only person that came around in the last month was the landlord.”
“Oh yeah? Why’d he come around?”
She let out a sigh. “I really wish I knew. Just something about annual inspection, but we just moved in like… two months ago, right when the semester started.”
“Really? Huh.” That was a potential clue for Dean. He wasn’t sure why the monster would wait almost two months, but maybe there was something related.
“All right, well, if you think of anything, please let me know, okay?”
“I,.. yeah, I will.”
Dean took one look at her and knew she wasn’t going to. He had the feeling she was suspicious about him, but that was nothing new. He just really, really wished he could ask her out for some drinks and then—
God. He really needed to get laid.
She escorted him to the door and shut it firmly behind him. He had a few options, none of them easy. He debated tracking down where the previous missing persons were last seen, but that meant leaving Y/N unguarded. If Sam hadn’t been an idiot, he could’ve done the investigating while Dean played bodyguard.
In the end, Dean parked the Impala out of sight of the apartment complex while giving him sufficient view to keep Y/N safe. And waited.
Tumblr media
It took hours. Painfully long hours. Dean was going insane at the wait. But his patience—pfft, what patience?—was rewarded. He saw something, someone, lurking about the complex. He sat up, squinted in the dim lighting.
Oh yeah, there was definitely something there. He grabbed his gun with one hand and the flashlight in the other, and went running.
The drawback of having to park far was that by the time he reached the building, the thing broke into Y/N’s apartment. Broken glass and wood splinters was everywhere, and he cursed up a storm.
Just as he burst through the shattered doorway, he heard Y/N screaming. Without a thought, Dean jumped over the overturned coffee table and saw it—them.
She was actually pushing the monster back, punching and kicking, which won a glint of Dean’s respect, and he got a good view of it: vampire, from the looks of the fangs.
“Hey, ugly!”
The vampire—God, those fangs were nothing like those from movies—turned to see Dean and snarled. It grabbed the girl, shit, and all but flung her into Dean,
Unwilling to let her crash into the coffee table, Dean caught her and went limp as they went down. More wood shattered and he grunted while she cried out, more out of fear than actual injury, he’d wager.
Normally Dean would be all about having a girl on top—maybe even quip that joke—but he had the wind knocked out of him. Just as he tried to shove the girl out of his arms, he saw the vampire leave with a hiss, running out the door.
“Shit,” he cursed, scrambled to his feet and rushed out the door.
Too late.
It was gone.
“Dammit!” His back was aching, his lungs were sore, and he had nothing to pay for it. With more profanities under his breath, he came back inside the apartment.
“Hey, you okay?” he asked, going over to the girl to help her get up.
“No, I’m not okay! What the hell was that?”
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” he said.
“Try me,” she said, dusting off her rear. God, what a nice ass.
“All right. It’s a vampire.”
She froze, and stared at Dean. “Excuse me?”
He grinned lopsidedly. “Told ya you wouldn’t believe me.”
“You’re right. I don’t. Vampires aren’t real,” she insisted, ignoring the trembling of her hands. Vampires might not be real, but she also knew what she saw: some man with what looked to be monstrous teeth.
“Then explain what you just saw,” he challenged. He marveled at her composure. Not many would be this calm after having had their home broken into and being nearly fed on.
“I…” She stopped. She couldn’t. Not really.
“Yeah. That’s what I thought.” Dean raked his fingers through his hair and let out a breath. “Listen. It isn’t safe to stay here.”
She glanced at Dean, then deliberately looked over at her busted front door. “No shit, Sherlock.”
He grinned. She had fire. He liked that. “You got any place to stay?” he asked, wildly tempted to offer her a motel room and then share it with her.
“N-no…” She bit her lip. “Nothing local. I’m from California.”
He paused and arched a brow. “No kidding’? Why’d you come here?”
“Veterinary school. One of the best and I wanted to get out of the state for a bit.” She paused, then shook her head. “Real smart of me.”
Dean actually felt bad for her. No doubt she wanted to experience a bit of the country, get out of her hometown, and just do the usual college kid thing to do. Instead, her neighbors go missing and she was attacked in her apartment. What a life.
“Okay, well… can you stay at a motel?” he asked.
“I don’t have any money,” she said ruefully. “I can’t…” God, she doubted the landlord had a spare door even if she called him about the break-in. It’d take time, and it wouldn’t be safe.
“Don’t worry about it,” Dean insisted. “It’s on me.”
“I am not having sex with you,” she said.
She was so blunt Dean actually did a double-take and laughed. “I wasn’t even going there,” he said with a wry grin. “Look. I’m a hunter, okay? I hunt the supernatural. I’m just helping out here, okay?”
She frowned, wary. He did save her, she had to admit. Could have left her there and chased it down. Even left her to deal with a broken door, the late night police call, everything, all on her own.
“I… o-okay. Can I grab some stuff first?”
“Yeah, go do that. I’ll call the police for you so you got it on file, okay?” That way the landlord’s insurance would cover damages, get her door replaced.
Tumblr media
It took an hour, some manipulation of the truth, and then Dean and Y/N were heading to the nearest Motel 6. He ended up having to take her in his car as she didn’t have one. She walked to the college or took the bus, which was why she lived so close by the university.
It felt awkward and weird to ask for two rooms—she insisted, as she wasn’t comfortable sharing a room with a total stranger—but Dean was willing to roll with it. Just chalked it up to a weird case all around.
He was yanking off his boots when he heard a knock at the door. Puzzled, he peered through the peephole and saw her outside his door. He’d be damned lucky if she wanted sex after all. Celebration of life and all that crap.
He was crestfallen a moment later when he opened the door.
“What did you mean, you hunt monsters?”
Damn pornos and their fake stories. He stepped aside to let her in and shut the door. “Just what I said. I hunt monsters.”
“But… monsters aren’t real,” she insisted. For a moment she seemed small and vulnerable. Dean felt an inkling of compassion, wanted to comfort her. He held back, shoved his hands in his coat pockets.
“I know it’s easier to believe that, but they’re real. Vampires, werewolves, Wendigo, ghosts, all that crap.”
“I-if they were real, why isn’t it common knowledge? Why hasn’t the government done anything about them?”
She was trying hard to logic her way through it. Determined chick. “Well, regarding common knowledge… people like to believe that the world isn’t that bad. That there aren’t monsters that go bump in the night. It’s easier to believe they hallucinated and forget it ever happened.”
She regarded Dean dubiously. “And the government?”
“Now that I can’t tell ya. I don’t know. I never met a Man in Black so I’d have to guess they’re a little busy dealing with other shit.” He scratched at his chin.
He could tell by the look in her eyes that she was more than a little freaked out. She wasn’t sure how to reconcile what happened, what she saw.
“How do… what am I supposed to do?” She sank down at the edge of the motel bed, wrapped her arms around herself.
“What do you mean?” He joined her on the bed, maintained a polite distance between them. God she smelled good. Like white jasmine.
“I just can’t go back to class pretending I never saw a vampire,” she said, her brows drawn. “Or that my neighbors weren’t attacked and eaten by them.”
Dean cleared his throat, uncertain how to approach her situation. He rarely bothered talking to one of the potential victims this long before. Other hunts he just tracked down and killed, leaving the authorities to deal with the mess. It wasn’t as if John walked him through this shit.
“Well, uh, I guess it’s up to you,” he said honestly. “I’m gonna find this vamp and take it down. That should solve the problem.”
“For this one, sure,” she said, and glanced at Dean. “But what about next time? I mean, you said ghosts?”
“Yep. Unhappy spirits. Demons. You name it, we’ve dealt with them.”
“I don’t…” she trailed off. She looked so lost, Dean felt it in his heart. He had a rather good idea of how she felt, given his exposure to the supernatural at a tender young age.
Ever since Mary died, ever since he saw his mother burning on the ceiling and his father tasking him to keep Sam safe, Dean’s innocence had been lost. He became cynical at a very young age. To him, life was hunting monsters and keeping Sam safe.
Sam was gone now. All that was left was the hunt.
“Take some time to think on it, Y/N,” he said at last, knowing it was awful advice but he had nothing else to offer.
“But I have class tomorrow. How am I supposed to act?”
He bit his lower lip. “Maybe don’t go. We don’t know why this vampire was targeting you and your neighbors.”
“Miss class? Are you insane?”
“What? It’s just class,” he scoffed.
She stared at him. “You’ve never been to college, have you?”
“Nope.” His cocky grin spoke volumes. “Kinda wish I had though. College chicks are hot.”
She rolled her eyes. “College is expensive. Me getting a scholarship to pay for my tuition was a miracle. I can’t afford to fail.”
“Well, it’s not safe for you to go until I catch that vampire,” he argued. God, this chick was stubborn.
Her expression hardened. “I’m not missing class, Dean.”
Tumblr media
She won the argument. Damn chick was stubborn as hell. Dean agreed to a compromise: she went to class, he followed her everywhere while doing as many phone calls as he could achieve. Then went absolutely stir crazy while he waited.
She had two classes, which were a good couple of hours long. Then she used the computer lab to do her homework. All in all, he spent about eight hours there.
On the way back, they stopped at her apartment to meet with the landlord. Dean whipped out his fake ID again.
“So you’re saying the annual inspection is unrelated to the disappearances,” Dean said, pressing on the landlord hard. He wasn’t the vampire, but he acted strangely. Didn’t seem to care that someone busted down a door or that four of his tenants went missing.
“That’s right,” the landlord said, his expression hard and shuttered. “I don’t like your implications. Who’s your supervisor?”
“Nunya,” Dean said, annoyed. “Look. Four people are missing and your last remaining tenant got attacked. You’re saying you don’t give a shit?”
“I’m saying I don’t care as long as bills are paid. I’ve already notified the next of kin to come get their belongings. I’m replacing the door. What else do you want me to do?” The landlord was of height to Dean, and glared at him.
Dean wished he could throw down with this jerk. Uncooperative bastard. There was something off about the guy, but Dean couldn’t put his finger on it.
“Fine! What about a security system then?” Dean challenged. “I’m not leaving Y/N to get attacked again!”
“That’s your problem, son!”
Right then and there, Dean very nearly clobbered the guy. Y/N grabbed his arm, hastily saying his name. “Dean… Dean! Stop!”
Dean threw her a furious look, his green eyes dark. He was absolutely disliking how this asshole was approaching the situation. He was not about to leave Y/N alone without something better than a door to keep her safe.
“Thank you, Mr. Smith,” Y/N said calmly. “I appreciate the door being replaced.”
The landlord scoffed, glared at Dean and muttered something about how it’d be replaced within the hour. And left. She waited a moment, then turned on Dean in a fury.
“What is wrong with you?!”
“Me? That jackass is a part of this, I’m damned sure of it! And he’s just leaving you to get killed!” Dean wanted to punch something. Or kick. Preferably the landlord.
“If that’s how you treat human beings, I hate to see how you handle harmless monsters,” she shot back.
“Sweetheart, there aren’t any harmless monsters,” he said, wrenching his arm free of her grip.
“That you know of,” she challenged. God, this chick was going to give him a headache. Wait. He was already getting one.
“Christ. What are you, some monster version of PETA?”
She took a deep breath, contemplated slapping him, and counted to ten. Then, mustering as much calm as she could, she fixed a look on Dean. “Look. He can’t do anything else, okay? So what… what can we do?”
In that moment it took everything he had to not joke about fucking. She’d probably hit him. He cleared his throat, calmed down his temper if not his libido. “God. Uh. Okay.” He rubbed his scalp, let out a huff. “Okay. Great. He’s fixing the door. That’s still not gonna keep you safe.”
“Then what? W-what about crucifixion? Holy water?”
“Unfortunately, sweetheart, that’s all Hollywood. Not gonna work.” He let out a breath. God, he deserved Sainthood for what he was about to do. “I can stay with you. Play bodyguard until I catch the vamp.”
“Excuse me?” She looked so offended, Dean wasn’t sure how to take that. He wasn’t ugly, come on. He also liked to think he wasn’t that bad in bed. His flings and one-night stands didn’t seem to complain. Yeesh.
“I can stay here,” he said slowly, enunciating carefully. “I’ll crash on your couch. Play bodyguard.”
“For how long?!”
“For however long it takes! Do you want to die?!” he shot back. He was so frustrated, he was absolutely about to lose it.
“Well, no! No one wants to die!” She threw her hands in the air. “This is a studio apartment, Dean! Ever heard of privacy?!”
Dean counted to ten. Then again. Nope, he wasn’t calm. Not this time. “Look,” he said, his anger heavily restrained. “This isn’t exactly what I was hopin’ to do, sweetheart. I was hoping to just come here, kill some monsters, and go on my merry way. Not play babysitter!”
“Well then, go ahead! Leave!” She flung a hand to the door, glaring at him. She stood there for long moments, waiting almost impatiently. “Well?!”
“Jesus Christ, you’re annoying! Look, I’m not leaving you here to get killed, Y/N!” He stormed up to her, almost nose to nose. God, he had problems all right if he found this ridiculously hot. “So suck it up, I’m crashing on your couch!”
Sparks were almost flying from her eyes, she was so damned pissed. She let out an angry grunt, spin on her heels and stalked into her bathroom. The door slammed behind her a moment later. He heard a yell of frustration after that and almost did the same himself.
“I’m grabbing stuff from my car! Don’t go anywhere!” he yelled out to the bathroom. He heard something that was undoubtedly profanities. He grinned. “Definitely my kind of girl,” he said with a chuckle, and headed out the doorway.
He popped the trunk, and then the hidden floor for what he’d need. Machete, his gun and— He never finished that thought as something hard smashed his head into the trunk and flung him to the ground. Dazed, he could barely focus as he saw something head into Y/N’s apartment. “No…” he groaned, unable to get up. His head was spinning too hard.
Barely seconds later, he heard something smash inside followed by a scream, this time full of fear. He heard his name. It was Y/N. She was screaming for him. “Come on… get up…” He struggled, rolled over, and nearly fell flat on his face. Just as he was pushing his way up, trying to control the sudden nausea that came from his head injury, a booted pair of feet came into his line of sight.
That was the last thing he saw before his face was kicked in.
Tumblr media
Dean wasn’t proud of himself. He tracked down Mr. Smith, all but beat the shit out of him to find out his link to the vampire. Turned out it was some obscene, whacky slumlord scheme, all to get him money while the vampire feasts like a king. How it was never revealed before, Dean had no idea—and didn’t give a damn. He had to find Y/N.
John might object to how Dean handled it, but, well, his father wasn’t there. Sam would be too tender-hearted, maybe. Dean would do it again, if he had to. He failed Y/N, after all. Let the damned vampire get up behind him and knock him silly. It was damned embarrassing. John would probably lecture him on letting his guard down.
He probably wouldn’t tell his father, nope. Not up to proving his father he was a disappointment… again.
Regardless, he found out where the vampire was taking Y/N. The vamp took her and his other victims to some abandoned farm silo west of West Lafayette in some middle of bum-fucking-nowhere Indiana. Some little dinky town called Oxford.
He navigated down the streets, mindful of the unlit streets. “God, did these people never hear of street lights?” he grumbled, not wanting to wreck Baby on some goddamned pothole he didn’t see. Eventually asphalt gave way to gravel to dirt. He just about had a nightmare over the sheer cleaning he’d have to do of the Impala after all this was done.
When he finally saw the silo, he cut the engine and coasted a few more feet. He didn’t want to risk the vampire knowing he was there. As it was, he was sincerely and truly hoping Y/N was still alive. She was tough, she had fire, but the vampire had paranormal strength.
God, he’d love to ask her out after this. Given his luck though, she’d probably ask him to go the hell away and never bother her again.
He crept up to the silo, machete in hand, his gun in the back of his jeans. As he got closer, he started to hear voices, screaming. One of them was definitely feminine, afraid, in pain. Y/N. His heartbeat picked up as he hurried, heedless of any noise he was making.
A faint mist clung to the ground, swirling around the boots of the lone, young hunter. His knuckles were white, his breathing measured but tense, as he entered the silo. It was so dark, the moonlight barely illuminating the intricate interior.
Across from him, the vampire emerged from the shadows, its pale skin gleaming in the moonlight. Blood-red eyes pierce through the gloom, and a cruel smile spreads across its face.
“You came all this way, just to die?” the vampire hissed, its voice a low, mocking growl.
“One of us is dyin’ tonight,” Dean replied, tightening his grip on the machete. “And it ain’t me."
The vampire darted forward, a blur of movement too fast for the human eye. The young man anticipated the attack, swinging the machete in a wide arc. The blade whistled through the air, narrowly missing the vampire’s neck as it twisted to the side with inhuman grace.
“You’ll need to be faster than that,” the vampire taunted, its voice now behind him.
Dean spun, slashing upward. The machete grazed the vampire’s arm, drawing a thin line of dark blood. The creature snarled, its fangs glinting like daggers.
The vampire lunged, its fingers aimed for Dean’s throat. He ducked just in time, rolling to the side.
“You're surprisingly quick,” the vampire admitted, circling its prey. “But you’re tiring. I can hear your heartbeat slowing. Smell the sweat of your fear.”
Dean didn’t reply, his chest heaving as he strategized. He knew he had only one chance—one clean strike.
The vampire leaped again, this time coming from above. Dean raised the machete, catching the monster mid-jump. The blade bit deep into its side, sending it crashing to the ground with an unearthly scream.
But it’s not enough.
The vampire rose, the wound knitting itself together before Dean’s eyes. It smirked. “That all you got?”
Desperation fueled Dean’s next move. He feinted left, then swung hard to the right, aiming for the neck. The vampire, too confident, didn’t anticipate the feint. The machete connected with sickening force, burying itself deep in the creature’s throat.
For a moment, silence reigns. The vampire stumbled, its hands clawing at the blade embedded in its neck. Dark blood poured from the wound.
Dean didn’t hesitate. With a roar, he yanked the machete free and swung again, severing the vampire’s head in a single, brutal stroke.
The headless body collapsed, twitching once before going still. The head rolled to a stop, its crimson eyes staring lifelessly at the ceiling.
Dean wiped the sweat and blood from his face, looking down at the vampire’s remains. “Told you,” he muttered, his voice barely audible.
The fight was over, but the scars—both physical and mental—were just beginning to form.
He had no time to worry about that. He dropped the machete, ignoring it for now, and went in search of Y/N.
Tumblr media
Dean found Y/N, freed her from the bindings. He also found the bodies of the missing people. He called 9-1-1 and reported the discovery before disappearing. He hated doing that to Y/N, but she needed the ambulance, the police, more than she needed him.
It would be hours later that he returned to her studio apartment. Her door was restored; good. He wouldn’t have to beat the landlord again, or try to do it himself. He saw her light on, so he knew she was home. Even so… he hesitated.
“Come on, man,” he whispered to himself. He knocked on her door and waited.
The outside light flickered on and he called up his best smile, unaware that it looked nervous and sickly more than confident. After a moment, Y/N cracked opened the door and peeked through the slit. “Dean…?”
“Hey. Uh. How’re you doing? Oh God,” he added in a whisper under his breath. He felt so fucking stupid. He saw her smile and he relaxed marginally. “Sorry for leavin’ you like that, but I had to. There’d be too many questions and—”
“Dean, shut up and come on in,” she said, stepping aside and opening the door. He hesitated, then stepped inside, rubbing the back of his neck. “I’m glad you came back. I… wanted to thank you.”
“Uh, thank me? For what?”
She wrinkled her brow at him. “For saving my life,” she said, as though it should be obvious.
“I didn’t… but you got…” Great. Just great. His charm died with the vampire.
But she was smiling. “Thanks. I… really. Thank you.” Her smile fell, and out of the damned blue, she slapped him.
Dean’s head rocked to the side and he very nearly spun around. He caught himself, wiggled his jaw with his hand and stared at her. “What the hell?!”
“That was for abandoning me!” Then she grabbed the collar of his coat and pulled him into a searingly hot kiss. Dean’s brain froze. Just… froze. His libido popped out of the box and wondered if it was finally going to be freed. Then she let him go, breathing a bit heavily. “And that was for saving me.”
“Um…” Come on brain. Come on. Work! “You’re… welcome.”
She smiled, a bit shy, a bit amused at his reaction. “You can go now, Dean.”
“Yeah. Sure….” Damn. College girls can kiss!

ISAT color headcanons? Yeah I got them!! Have quite a bit of thoughts about them actually. Though they do contain spoilers so if you want to hear them then they'll be under the cut. :)
It is very very important to me that Sif's palette stands out from the rest of the party. And so, in my hc, that manifests as all of the party sans Siffrin having warm color cohesion, while Sif is (almost) alone with cold colors. I chose purple for him (possibly because subconscious ace impulses and also the space connection) but he could also have blue.
Mira is pink because I personally cannot see anything else for her. But I really like the idea that she'd have yellow/orange somewhere too to tie back to mirabelle plums.
I've seen a few people use yellow for Bonnie which I agree with! It's a young, happy, energetic, color!
Isabeau is probably the one I have the least thoughts for color-wise but, yeah I do think he has brown hair. I do also like orange being his color (maybe because he reminds me a bit of Peeta Mellark). I was trying to stay as value accurate to the og sprites as possible so that's why Isabeau is so monochrome, but I do think he'd be a colorful lad.
Odile's shirt (for whatever reason) has always had very very strong red vibes for me (probably because it reminds me of chinese cheongsam), which I do like for her! It's a very strong and commanding color, which she can definitely be when the situation calls for it. Her cardigan was probably the hardest thing for me to figure out because I knew I wanted the shoulder pads to have a cold color, and for the rest of it to be warm so that she didn't get oversaturated with the cold color (Just a touch of cold! Only a touch! It's important!). The beige felt very cardigan-esque and although it isn't a perfect fit with the blue/violet, I think it WORKS because a little bit of color discoordination in her design is FUN and CUTE and can be telling of her character!! :)) Characterization through design my beloved!
NOW ONTO THE COLD COLORS.
THEY ARE IMPORTANT because it visually symbolizes the difference between Sif and the rest of the party in regards to their backgrounds. Everyone has Vaugarde that they can relate to each other with. Except for Sif. Sif is other. Odile is also other, which is why she has a touch of blue, but she also has Vaugarde and Ka Bue. She has homes to come back to. Sif talks quite a few times in the game about how everyone realizes they're not from around here. In universe that can be explained by like physical attributes. Accent. Mannerisms possibly. But if this was like a tv-series, the audience, who are just getting acquainted with the world and know nothing about it's norms, wouldn't pick up on any of that. And that's why the visual short hand of "similar colors" and "opposing colors" is really important to me in this instance. It's another layer to add to these characters and try to communicate something about them! tldr; Everyone has warm colors to set them apart from Siffrin who has cold colors, showcasing how they are fundamentally different when it comes to their backgrounds.

Alright! So! Kaboodle has been haunting my head like a cool little ghost roomie for a wee bit now /pos and I just,,,, look my blog is alllll about incoherently screaming into the void that is the internet about whatever is haunting my head this time, it was inevitable that bnuuy girliepop would get her own post ok? If nothing else, then it's surprising it hasn't happened before--
(like with Branzy's post from a while back, this is a character analysis of, y'know, THE CHARACTER??? so yeah! This is about the bunny girl killing ppl on LifeSteal and not whoever the hell talks behind the mic! I don't feel like I should have to say this, but I've seen ppl be dumbasses over LS!Kab AND actual Kaboodle too. so. don't be an idiot over this — you're encouraged to scroll on if you don't care to read it! This applies to any other names I throw around, like always — happy reading!)
So to preface whatever word vomit I'm about to commit, lemme bring it all out already: my knowledge of LifeSteal Season Six (the one that features Kaboodle) is basically One (1) whole recent stream, and maybe three videos all set on the very beginning of the season — don't expect this to be accurate, but I'll do my very best based on what I've got on hand.
With that out of the way, I'll proceed to yank bnuuy girliepop by the hair and into my microscope:
It's no secret that Kaboodle has a bit of a problem with trusting people, even to the point where she called whatever happened with ash "betrayal," when most of us wouldn't consider it that — she was taken advantage of (from what I understand of her POV to the situation), sure, but they were never teammates, they were never friends in the server; she's been having a big problem with trust and how she uses it, mostly because she's very extroverted and people-oriented — less in the sense that she knows how to read people and the little signs within their voices, and more in the sense that she thrives around people. She's insecure over her own survival abilities and her PVP prowess, and as such has taken to leaning on others to cover up her blindspots — she's been leaning on those surrounding her like her life depends on it because, to a certain extent, it does: if you don't know how to fight, you find someone who does and attach yourself to them, learn their tactics, grow alongside them so you can stand on your own; Kaboodle is still not yet there, she's just now realizing she has to stop trusting people just because they were chill with her once.
But she thrives within a group, she's extroverted and is fed energy through chatter and socializing — that type of person will intrinsically have it harder to detach their feelings from being projected onto other people (reason why she considers the ashswag incident a betrayal, even though I'm pretty sure there wasn't any precedent for trust to be placed on him) and as such will simply have it harder to keep to themselves; we can see this so clearly in how she interacts with others: she doesn't move even an inch, no flinch and no instinct to run away even as Clown launches into the air and he fakes an attack on her with the Mace. She follows ManePear around as they sneak close to PrinceZam and baconnwaffles0 to eavesdrop on their conversation, and barely fights back as she gets killed a half hour or so after with no indication of why he would do that. She calls Zam her "frenemy" and while that word includes enemy in its spelling, it also includes friend.
She still hasn't quite let go of Squiddo's betrayal, and while I'm not informed on what that situation is, I can say one thing about it: Squiddo learned from last season that they shouldn't blindly trust whoever she calls a friend outside of LifeSteal, I'm sure (the temporary ban they got for helping Wemmbu with... I think it was his orbital cannon??? Plus his support of the 4Cvit and Reddoons team-up over his support of Squiddo; these things would do that to you), so she doesn't — they allow herself to be friends and have teammates, allies, so on, but they're not above taking sides if that means she gets out on top (their betrayal of 4Cvit leaves this being very clear to the audience — she's done playing around, they're here to survive and win it; as much as one wins LifeSteal, of course) and this is a lesson all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed new LifeStealers have to learn if they want to come back next season: whatever you and someone else had outside of LifeSteal stays outside of LifeSteal — once you're inside, your relationships are inherently different. There's no way about it.
Clown understands this — he's willing to partner up with friends and foes so long as it benefits him, and he's not above getting dirty if that's what it takes; he trusts people as far as he can throw them, and he fucking hates knockback on his weapons. Kaboodle is not exempt from this rule, regardless of whatever relationship they shared before LifeSteal Season Six — she can't quite wrap her head around this notion, especially obvious on her video about her first experience on the server: one of the first things she did in that thing was showing the audience a chart she made on how much she trusts people on the server, and in that chart she singled out Clown by saying that there's nothing that would make her distrust him because they're friends! They know each other! She knows him better than most do!
But he's not the guy she knows — he's most of that man, sure, but she's never experienced first hand how Clown is on the server.
What I find interesting, is that one stream I watched — technically I watched two: Kaboodle's Confrontation stream from the 5th, and Clown's POV of the same conversation; I didn't watch the whole Clown VOD, but it got pointed out to me (everyone thank clownscasino for this) that Clown was scared — to me he seemed more nervous than scared, but the point still stands on this whole thing: Clown was uneasy over meeting Kaboodle to discuss... Whatever it is she wanted to speak about; he wasn't indifferent, curious, bored — he was specifically uneasy over the concept. The conversation hung over his head like a thunderstorm cloud, never leaving and never lessening — he was affected by the idea and sure, it was because he thought she would try to kill him, but doesn't that say a lot about him?
He cares. In the absence of somebody to stay by his side, he's come to care for a familiar face.
... Did you know Branzy had been Clown's teammate consistently for three seasons in a row? (more or less — I'm new to this thing, cut me some slack) that's an incredible number, considering how polarizing and dividing LifeSteal can easily become for its players — they've all bounced around teams and allies like a twink at a fraternity party, yet Branzy had always remained by Clown's side; similarly, Clown stuck by Branzy's. They didn't help each other frequently — mostly because by the end of their runtime Branzy wasn't logging in all that much — but they sure as all hell stayed loyal to one another; there's a reason their duo is so popular, regardless of whether you wanna mash their character together like two Barbies or not: even within the massacre and bloodshed of LifeSteal, the violence and backstabbing and betrayal, the Funhouse Duo/Clownzy have always stood by each other.
Season Six is the first time that Clown doesn't have his bestie of all besties/his work bf around to lean back on — he's left on his own, and while he can certainly survive and even thrive on his own, it just isn't the same; there's no more friendly face he can pick out from the crowd, no more loving person to care for and fret over. He's always been alone, at the end of the day, but it hasn't stung half as much as it does now.
All of this is to say: Clown is an introvert telling Kaboodle to just "not trust people", while Kabs is an extrovert who can't help how she gets attached to people — they're an interesting duo to watch as they discuss, because while Kaboodle says that she's gonna start being more careful around people, not trusting others etc. etc., she still stays put as she watches Clown come down on her, Mace in hand. She still tells him that she trusts him as he's telling her "well you shouldn't!" She still follows ManePear around and gives him iron when she's asked, based on the momentary truce they held, a precarious thing entirely dictated by his hand and not hers.
I get what Clown is saying when he tells her to "not trust anyone — not even me", as he's the veteran between them and the one who has the most knowledge, he understands how the server operates and what the point of it all is, the atmosphere bred within its code and how it spreads like a disease amongst its players, yet it just circles back to being annoying — it reminds me of that conversation Woogie (I think) and Kaboodle had on her video about her first day(s?), where Woogie was undermining her experience, ideas and beliefs, and the only difference is the amount of misplaced loyalty Kaboodle has for (LS!)Clown; she trusts him without him having to do anything, and that's something that goes down wrong with him, obviously: he advises her to keep her cards to her chest, where somebody with less mercy (less love for her, less unwilling care, less desire to see her thrive on her own terms and by her own merit) would've let her get herself killed with that big heart of hers that's in need of affection and attention.
She's so excited as she recounts her last week to a listening Clown, immediately sighing with great relief as he explains he wasn't helping ManePear when he was hunting her, she says "I love Batman" as Clown exclaims he would be Batman and while I don't think cc!Kabs is quick-on-the-uptake enough to have a surface vs deeper meaning line thrown in the middle of Killerbunnies banter that's not necessarily fully in character, I reserve the right to believe whatever the fuck I wish, actually.
He humours her, lets her ramble and asks about what happened to her eye, he follows along with her DC comparisons and takes the time to explain to her what actually happened between him and ManePear.
He says he doesn't trust anyone, but doesn't love require some trust? What a hypocritical Clown, you turned out to be. I hope, if it comes down to it, you show her she matters more to you than those self imposed rules of yours, as I'm sure she'll show you you matter more to her then those rules you try to teach her

~chapter 2
Tumblr media
 --At Obsidian castle a few years ago.
Gilbert: Akatsuki, are you insane?
Akatsuki: Is there something wrong?
Tumblr media
Gilbert: It’s not convenient.
Gilbert: It’s dangerous to let the little rabbit handle the store all by herself.
Akatsuki: You’re being overprotective.
Gilbert: It would be different if she was a man, but the little rabbit is just a weak woman, you know?
Gilbert: And your bookstore has a lot of rare books.
Gilbert: Until now, you have silenced people with that sword, but it’s not the same for the little rabbit.
Gilbert: What if a thief barges in?
Akatsuki: It’s unlikely.
Gilbert: Chances are low, but it’s still possible.
Akatsuki: I won’t deny that, but Emma is an adult.
Akatsuki: She’s not a child who needs protection.
Akatsuki: Besides, it was Emma’s own wish to work at the bookstore.
Akatsuki: It’s an essential experience for her to stand independently.
Gilbert: Maybe so, but…
Akatsuki: Don’t do anything unnecessary.
Gilbert: Ahaha, of course I won’t do anything. I’m merely a reader relishing the tale of the little rabbit, not a character within it.
Gilbert: How can Obsidianite royalty get involved with the affairs of the common people?
Gilbert: But I’m worried.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ㅤ ◇ ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
Gilbert: Michael, you’re training until this late at night?
Michael: …..! Prince Gilbert, I apologize for not noticing.
Gilbert: That’s right. Not noticing someone’s presence is viewed as a failure for a soldier.
Gilbert: But I’ll forgive you for today. You were thinking about something, weren’t you?
Michael: …Today, I had my wound examined by Dr. Walter.
Michael: I was informed that my left arm will never fully heal….
Gilbert: Yeah, I’m listening.
Michael: As a soldier, I seem to have become useless.
Michael: Unfortunately, I was unable to repay the kindness I received from you, Prince Gilbert…
Gilbert: Oh my. Who says there’s no use for you anymore?
Michael: …..Is there something left for me to do?
Michael: Right now, I can’t do anything like Roderic.
Gilbert: That’s true. But what’s important to me isn’t skill, it’s whether you are loyal to someone or not.
Gilbert: You won’t betray me, will you?
Michael: I would rather die than betray you.
Gilbert: Heehee…hey, Michael. You’ve just returned from a brutal battle.
Gilbert: If you push yourself too hard, things that could get better won’t get better. So, I have a suggestion for you.
Gilbert: How about going to Rhodolite for some rest and recuperation?
Michael: Rhodolite?
Gilbert: Yeah, it’s a small country, but it’s quite safe.
Gilbert: They are a neighbour to Obsidian, so I believe it’s the ideal place for you right now.
Michael: I’m grateful for your compassion.
Michael: Please give me your orders.
Gilbert: Ahaha, as expected, you’re quick to catch on, aren’t you?
 Gilbert: But this isn’t an order, it’s just a personal request….
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gilbert: There’s a girl in Rhodolite who I’m interested in.
Michael: Oh yes, you sometimes speak of her.
Gilbert: I wonder if she’s doing well.
Michael: …..
Michael: Would it be alright if I send a personal letter to you detailing the progress of my recovery?
Gilbert: Of course. I like pen-pal correspondence.
Gilbert: I’ll prepare a fake ID for you. Just be careful.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ㅤ ◇ ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
Roderic: Prince Gilbert, you’ve received a letter from Michael.
Gilbert: Thank you. Give it to me.
Gilbert: ……..
Roderic: ….Is something wrong?
Gilbert: Hmmm….
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gilbert: Roderic, what would you do if you found out that a thief had blended into the general society?
Roderic: I’ll finish him off.
Gilbert: Right?
Roderic: Did Michael catch the thief?
Gilbert: Nope. He didn’t mention anything like that.
Gilbert: However, it seems that Michael has become a regular at a certain bookstore.
Gilbert: He heard this story from a girl working at the store…
Gilbert: She says she can feel someone’s gaze on her.
Roderic: Someone’s gaze?
----(present day)----
Emma: ….I remember now.
The story that Gilbert weaved is gradually overlapping with my memories.
Emma: Shortly after the owner put me in charge of the store….
Emma: I sometimes got chills while working there.
Emma: Even though there was no one in the store, I could feel like someone was watching me.
Emma: But I couldn’t tell this to the owner as he was travelling.
Emma: I was scared, but often wondered if it was just my imagination. Then, Michael showed up.
Emma: He noticed I wasn’t feeling alright, so I sought advice without giving it much consideration….
(I never thought that conversation would reach Gilbert.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gilbert: Michael was worried about that too.
Gilbert: --He was worried I was going to start genocide.

I was going to do a quick analysis on the comic’s title in relation to Buddy and uh. here I am now 900 words later. hope at least one person enjoys this,,
TLDR: Maybe the real Cinderella Boy was the weird goth friends we made along the way.
So I was doing my routine pondering of Dreams by Night (because symbolism and parallels are like crack to me) and this line right here might my favorite piece of dialogue in the whole comic:
Tumblr media
Really this scene as a whole might be my favorite moment, but that line in particular — and its implications — are so fascinating to me.
Chase yet again breaks the conventions of a story, but this time it's the story of Cinderella Boy itself. In this case, Chase relinquishes his title of The Hero — or more accurately — The Protagonist. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that right after this moment is our first glimpse of Buddy outside of Chase’s perspective. Outside of the narrative up to that point of him being a villain.
I also don’t think it's a coincidence this is something as unreliable as a dream: a (quite literal) look inside Buddy’s head and thought process. Again, further establishing the unreliability of the story’s narrative as we know it.
I’ll stop before I go full blown analysis mode on the comic’s meta themes of narrative and conventions (saving that for another time). But I do bring up all this stuff about changing the view of the narrative, because I want to talk about another implication of ”This can be your story too.”
Which is that the title of Cinderella Boy actually refers to Buddy (or at least also refers to him).
Chase does fit a lot of the qualities of Cinderella and that story. I mean, it’s the very first story we see him in. But, I also think the Cinderella story fits Buddy even more.
List:
—A young person trapped in a horrible situation, stuck wearing rags and being treated as a pawn for a higher authority’s bidding. (Cinderella being a servant for her “family” and Buddy being a servant for Ex Libris).
—Said higher authority being cruel (The Evil Stepmother and the Old Man)
—The young person is assisted by a lady who gives her nice clothes and an avenue to escape reality. (Violet acting as a fairy godmother-like figure).
—Young person falls in love with a man who can rescue them from their troubles (the Prince and Chase), but doesn’t reveal their identity to the man
—Both Cinderella and Buddy are just nicknames, but that’s how everybody refers to them.
So yeah, lots of parallels to Cinderella with Buddy, at least based on the little we know about him.
I also want to bring up something we see in the very beginning of Cinderella Boy. In the first episode, we get a cliff notes version of Cinderella’s story. Colors (especially background colors) are really important in the comic, representing emotions and characters. And what is the main color that reappears again and again in this episode?
Purple.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The petals and roses that surround the snippets of story and the revealing of the main character, all Buddy’s signature color. The petals only turn pink — Chase’s color — when Chase actually appears.
Side note: The inclusion of both purple and pink side by side in this episode also alludes to the fact that, from the start, this is both Buddy and Chase’s story. (Seriously, go check it out, there’s so many instances it’s hard to unsee when looking for them).
Also, where else have we seen purple roses? Oh yeah, Chase’s dream in Dreams by Night. I’ve already rambled about its importance to shifting the narrative. Granted that’s not the only place purple roses appear, but it’s the most relevant.
Beyond just the colors, the actual descriptions of the heroine in the first episode should sound pretty familiar. A person “unknown to all” and “dressed in humble rags.” Sounds a lot like Buddy, from what we see in his dream at least.
Ok, so having discussed all of Buddy’s connections to Cinderella and the comic’s title maybe being about him, this is the part where I start speculating and jumping fifty different sharks. I want to make some predictions about Buddy based on the Cinderella story.
List (the sequel):
1- Buddy is an orphan. (Not far-fetched of an assumption to make about him in general, since in Beach Boys VI he expresses what seems to be confusion about the idea of having a family).
2- The palace’s clock is important in Cinderella, and Buddy’s dream heavily features a clock. So, Buddy’s likely running out of time for something. To find the keys or just being able to see Chase, either/or. What’s going to happen when that time is up? Well…
3- Mimicking Cinderella running away at midnight, Buddy’s going to be forced to leave the stories for good, likely as the season finale.
4- I think Buddy’s going to leave behind a metaphorical glass slipper, an identifier. What do I think it’ll be? His name. (Considering the current relationship between Buddy and Chase. And the fact we’re getting close to the end of the season and therefore a Buddy name reveal, I don’t think this is too improbable).
4.5- This is the most out there one, but Buddy’s name might be related to the name Ella, which is Cinderella’s original name in many interations. Maybe Ellis, Elliot, or Elijah.
It’ll be fun to see if any of these are actually close to what’ll happen. And with that, I’ll end my red string board session for now. :]

one of the most compelling things about dokee to me is that out of 1865 rounds she exists in two of them - one where she is saved by kim dokja, and one created to save kim dokja. this isn't especially unique when it comes to kimcom, but they both approach it differently to the others.
i think its clear kim dokja feels a unique sense of responsibility for her. he repeatedly refers to her as 'his character', her skills as something 'he raised', and her as 'his sword'. heewon occupies a strange space as an extra saved by him - not quite twsa character, not quite 'real person', and he seems to deal with that by sorting her into this role as a proto-character that needs to be guided. at the same time he clearly respects her, and even confides in her things he doesn't feel he can tell anyone else.
jung heewon has her own feelings of responsibility towards kim dokja, as clearly seen in her whole - well, everything. again, feeling indebted to kim dokja and wanting to save him because he saved her - not new feelings in kimcom. but her being referred to and used as 'his sword', is i think a unique way this manifests. its an overwhelming desire to be used. or maybe more accurately to be useful to the man who saved her. lee hyunsung as kimcom's shield comes closest, but the same emphasis isn't really placed on it. instead we really get to zoom in on jung heewon and how she feels about being the sword that swings wherever kim dokja points, even when he points it at himself.
this is sort of an aside, but one of jung heewon's defining character traits is her stubborness. she hardly seems like the type of character that would become someone else's sword, or do something she disagreed with because she was told to. we see this when she goes against eden. we also see this doesn't exactly disappear when she's talking to or fighting with kim dokja. she's still always the first to see through his bullshit and question him.
which i think is why im so fascinated by how willingly she becomes his sword, and how effectively he knows how to wield her. at no point do we get the feeling jung heewon is simply following orders - at no point do we get the feeling she would ever go against kim dokja, or that her actions aren't accounted for in his plan.
he loves her, and she loves him. he saved her, and she will save him. he guided her and raised her skills, made her strong while showing her when and where to use it, and now she will fight on whatever battlefield he puts her on. he knows how to wield her like no one else, and she's the sword he always relies on.
anyway this pretty much just became a nonsensical ramble on kim dokja and jung heewon's relationship but yeah, they really are something special

I don’t think we talk enough about how tragic of a character March 7th is
I think her rather cheerful demeanor has unconsciously shifted people away from realizing just how well, sad her situation is. She was found in a chunk of mysterious ice floating way out in the vacuum of space with no explanation for how or why she was out there. March had no possessions, no memories, not even a damn NAME to know herself by, to the point where she decided to refer to herself using the date she was found: March 7th.
And yeah, she’s begun to forge an identity for herself following her rescue, but just imagine not knowing who you are, you who were, and having the literal universe itself (or more accurately, the memokeepers) going “No no, you can’t know about your past, it’s that bad!” which only leaves you with more questions than answers.
How can she not lie awake at night thinking of who she might have been? Was her past tragic? Evil? Delightful? Meaningless? Who did she leave behind? What did she leave behind? How bad was it to the point where March shouldn’t know about it for her own good? These are all horrifying questions she must be asking herself, and yet March has quite literally been denied all of their answers. At least the Trailblazer and Dan Heng have the comfort of knowing who they were in their pasts, even if those people were not the best, because then at least they can process it.
However, March has nothing TO process, just a whole lot of questions and not a single answer, and it must be terrifying not knowing who you are, and I don’t just mean on a spiritual level. What if March gets sick from some mundane thing which the crew never could have predicted because her biology simply doesn’t match any recorded species? What if she unlocks a new power and/or accidentally becomes a danger to herself and others, with simply no way to predict that? March has so many weaknesses and strengths she doesn’t know about simply because she doesn’t know anything at all about herself.
Like yeah the six-phased ice is fun and pretty looking, but if you think about it for more than a second, it gets kinda creepy. A substance unmatched in the universe that March can just produce at will? What is it? Where does it come from? How does it work? How can SHE control it? Why can she control it? How come it doesn’t exist elsewhere? Why was she encased in it? Did March freeze herself, because to me that’s what it looks like, or maybe her long exposure to the ice gave her some sort of control over it? Who knows? I don’t, and March certainly doesn’t.
As for the day she does find out, will she be disappointed? Will we as an audience be disappointed? Are the 26 something backstories she came up with for herself better or more interesting than the actual truth? Is it better for HSR to never tell us, to have this gaping mystery stuck in the game that they refuse to solve, knowing that whatever they fill that void with will never be enough to satiate its viewers? Keeping HSR’s theme of accepting one’s past and moving forward despite everything, would it be better to simply not explain who March was?
We learned who Dan Heng was, the TB will learn who they were, so what about March? What if they truly never answer that question? I doubt it will happen, but I think it would be so much more interesting if her past was really kept a mystery. That no matter who March was in her past life, she can be happy in this one and become the person she wants to in spite of that. She made her own name, made her own family, made her own identity and skills and friends and personality, and no matter how different she was before being frozen in the ice, March has who she is now and that’s what she’ll stick with, because it belongs to her more than that nebulous past ever did.
All that to say, hoyoverse, please do not drop the ball on March 7th, although I have long since lost faith in you not to do so

I don't read the comics very often but I do watch Young Justice and I have been meaning to ask- Is Dick Grayson's portrayal different in the animated series from the comics?
Because he definitely seems very goofy to me, with some serious streak.
p.s" I am *very* new to this fandom and I hope that I haven't set off anyone with this question in my hyper-fixation quest.
I've actually answered this question a few times I think, but I answered them so long ago I hardly remember what I said. I've also not watched YJ in so long at this point that I'm not sure I can remember enough to comment on super specific things. And me having more comic knowledge now than I did when I first watched the show may also impact how I felt about it then vs. now. I'll try to dredge up some things though.
I feel like most Dick Grayson comic readers enjoy Dick's portrayal in Young Justice. I only watched Seasons 1-2 of YJ and some of S3, so I can't say whether or not Dick's portrayal in the later episodes or seasons are accurate.
In Young Justice, we see different sides to Dick. As Robin, he's more playful and expressive, and as Nightwing, he's more serious. In an old post of mine, I talked about these sides of him from the perspective of his comic counterpart:
I always see Dick as a mixture of serious and playful whether he's solo or working with a team. He's not just one at all times. When there's downtime or a mission that involves some simple beatings, he's more personable and willing to joke. When there's a serious situation where death is more likely, the serious demeanor falls into place. In Outsiders, Dick is serious when he's with the team, but he's playful and personable towards Roy at times. In Teen Titans, Dick is playful when they're giving some villains a beating, but he's very serious when Wally is hurt. In Nightwing, Dick is more chill when he's living his regular civilian life, and sometimes when he's out as Nightwing, his inner commentary is lighter. Like all things, his demeanor depends on the severity of the situation as well as whether the story is focusing on his civilian life or vigilante one.
By the time we got to YJ S2, the situation that was occurring was quite serious, and on top of that, Dick had experienced Jason's death at that point. Between those past losses and all the weight on Dick's shoulders from his responsibilities, it's no wonder that we got the more serious version of him in S2. So yeah, S1 Dick is more playful, which does reflect comic Dick's kind and more personable side. S2 shows Dick in leader mode, which also reflects comic Dick's leader side well.
If you want some examples of comic Dick's leader side, you can look at my old post here:
I think YJ at least does a decent job of showing Dick's duality in that sense. And it was nice in YJ for us to see Dick get that character development where he went from doing things on his own out of habit of working with Batman to learning how to be a more effective leader of a team.
Hm what else. Dick's manipulation/secret keeping in YJ is accurate (aka the whole Artemis and Kaldur situation). It's the "Batman" in him. This is something that's dealt with in the comics. Dick's friends in the comics may call him out for being too much like Batman or pulling some kind of Batman stunt. Oh and Dick wearing sunglasses in S1 to hide his identity... also accurate to his comic counterpart in keeping his identity to himself.
Then maybe one other thing I didn't necessarily like in S2 was that Dick was held back at the base to coordinate things rather than being out in the field. Which like. I guess makes sense for YJ because, if I'm remembering correctly, Dick was leading different squads of heroes. I guess it would make more sense for him to be in one central location where he could keep an eye on all teams at all times. However, in the comics, Dick would normally be out in the field with his team.

I have to be honest, I am a tad anxious about how the show will be handling Akasha and the casting for Akasha, Maharet, and Mekare.
I'm sure the show will cast BIPOC actresses for those 3 characters, since they are actually BIPOC in the books with Akasha being from Uruk, which is modern day Iraq, and Maharet and Mekare being Palestinian (I believe they're from Palestine?).
However, I have worries, because while so many people want a Black actress (I would still love this!) for Akasha because we all remember Aaliyah's iconic performance; I honestly don't think the people saying that know what she actually did in the books, because the QotD movie wasn't very book accurate at all. And now we're getting the books adapted and that means they might show us the things Akasha did in the book, which were horrific. Since the show has allowed the vampires to be able to have sex unlike in the books, we might see (or have it mentioned, at least) that Akasha sexually assaults Lestat and does this repeatedly. And we'll learn that Akasha had Maharet and Mekare sexually assaulted. Akasha massacres people and literally commits mass murder. And I really don't think that a lot of the people excited to see her know this, because she is undoubtedly the most evil character in the books. Like evil evil.
And the optics of having the most evil character be killed by Mekare might not look so good, depending on who they cast.
I really think they should try and cast actresses that are both Black and SWANA (Southwest Asian and North African) for all 3 characters. That way fans of Akasha from the QotD movie will be happy, while also making them SWANA would make book fans happy and finally give us SWANA representation, especially since all 3 are canonically SWANA (Iraqi and Palestinian. Please correct me if I'm incorrect about Mekare and Maharet's origins).
I just think the optics of having the most evil character (Akasha) be Black while Mekare/Maharet are not or having Akasha be SWANA and Mekare/Maharet are not would not look so great.
I really respect your opinion and wanted your thoughts on this. I hope the show walks this line carefully.
Yeah, the "optics" of their casting choices as you put it... will be difficult no matter what they'll do.
People have that image of Akasha in their head that Aaliyah made iconic, but the QotD movie literally skirted all the problematic stuff (or almost all of it).
The show... this show... won't.
They also already added sexual assault to the canon list of it (of which there is quite a lot in the Chronicles).
I'm not sure I'd call Akasha evil per se... but she is a cruel and quite brutal ruler - I do hope the show gives us flashbacks not only to the beginnings with Mekare, Maharet and Khayman, but that they also add the Blood Wars, the First Brood going against the Queen's army. But it will indeed be heavy if they choose to add the "ordered rape" - but then, how could they not, at least if they want to bring in the "Great Family".
And yes, Akasha threatens and abuses Lestat, too, and this show won't shy away from that either.
*sighs* It's going to grate, no matter what they do.
If they do not cast a black actress, people will complain, and if they do, people will likely cheer at first, only to then be horrified when the proverbial canon story shit hits the fan, to put it a bit glibly.
Casting a mixed representation might be the way to go, yes, but even then... I fear there will be complaints no matter what. 😅
I don't have a solution for this, I have to say, and I think casting Akasha (and Khayman and Maharet and Mekare) in this show might be one of the most daunting tasks for Rolin & co ... and not because there are no great actresses to fill Aaliyah's shoes, but because of the problems coming with it through the story, especially maybe through that indeed canon origin of Mekare and Maharet being from the region of today's Palestine - especially given our current... events :/

transcript for this interview below the cut because i was bored <3 (i might’ve made some mistakes….please ignore but i think it’s pretty accurate). talks about buck and eddie, maddie, and some interesting stuff about baking and buck’s love life here 👀
Q: Buck’s best friend is moving to Texas. His sister had just been kidnapped. How is he doing going forward?
OS: I mean that just sounds like a usual week for Buck on 911. Um, you know he-he’s got some things to work through that-that’s for sure. Umm, you know, it’s a character that’s faced a lot of abandonment in the past and this is for sure, as we see during 809, gonna stir some of that back up for him. So-so a bit of PTSD o-on the abandonment front. But, you know, things, uh, fall into place the way they’re meant to and he’s just gonna have to roll with the punches an-and work it out as he goes a-and not, you know, as we see him do some of in 809, try and stand in anybody else’s way.
Q: It’s heartbreaking for Buck to deal with Eddie moving and hearing him say he had no ties in LA. Did he really believe that, or was that just compounded by him leaving?
OS: I think-I think—I don’t think Eddie means it, right. I don’t think Eddie means it in a hurtful way. I think he means it in comparison to his son. Technically Eddie doesn’t have any ties, right—obligations maybe we should say—but I think Buck, because of his past an-and the level of abandonment that we’ve seen him deal with, you know, in-through flashbacks his whole life—I think he takes it personally and I think—I think Buck believes it out of Eddie’s mouth in that moment and, you know, as wrong as that may be, that’s the way he interprets it and that’s what then lead to uh—uh him picking up a little doggy.
Q: Are you now done with that loft space?
OS: I can tell you that loft space does not exist anymore.
Q: We’ve seem how Buck has handled Maddie being taken in the past. What will we see this time?
OS: Slightly different from what we’ve experienced before. Um-um. . . I don’t quite know how it will play out in the episode—I hav-haven’t seen it—but I think there’s a slightly more rational response this time an-and not as maybe, gung-ho, as we’ve seen from him in the past and he’s gonna try and weigh up a few more options before, uh, jumping to kind of worst case scenario.
Q: Great casting of Abigail Spencer. Could Jee have been take too? What’s Next?
OS: Uh so first of all on Abigail—I only met her one time. You know, we didn’t have much interaction in the show but she was very lovely and it was nice to have her on the show. Um. . . Jee. . .I assume I can—Jee is not taken and in actual fact, Jee is key to. . . discovering Maddie’s disappearance.
Q: With whom does Buck have the most significant conversation coming up?
OS: Is this a spoiler? Maddie! [Laughs] Um, I think-I think-I think with Maddie. Um. . . I don’t quite know what episode it will fall in, currently it’s 811, but-but I think-I think yeah, w-with Maddie is the answer to that question. [Cut?] It’s. . . something that Buck considers to be ludicrous, at least on the outside a-and you know, kind of is a conversation he never thought he’d be having.
Q: What can you say about Buck and Eddie’s goodbye and how Buck will be doing when Eddie’s gone?
OS: Yeah, I mean you know we’ve seen the end of 809 uh. . . Buck had kind of—patched things up with Eddie an-and taken a big step, uh, in-in the direction of apologizing for the—his previous sabotage. Um, but yeah there’s still a good-goodbye to come between them and it’s gonna be. . . find that line between emotional and sad but also y-you know, you have to go and do this thing and I-I understand that and I’m happy for you, you know. He says at the end of 809, “[you’re going] to where you belong and that’s not geographically where you belong but it’s with Christopher.”
Q: How is Buck going to be dealign with everything that’s going on right now? More baking? Another Dog?
OS: He’s still baking. That baking thread has really lasted on the show [smiling, hehe]. Umm [laughs]—the breaking thread has longing—la-lasted longer than certain injuries on the show have lasted, so no there’s—there’s definitely still, uh, baked goods in-in buck’s life and—which I enjoyed because, at the end of the day, they get to come home with me if I so wish or I get to give them out to people—um, he is gonna. . . look into the possibility of. . .of finding new friends—an-and, you know, working out if Eddie’s gonna be away for a while, who am I gonna spend my time with? An-and that’s gonna take him down some fun avenues.
Q: Is anything coming up in Buck’s love life?
OS: His love life’s gonna. . . flick on for a moment or two. And-a, you know, he’s gonna see how that feels and-and if he’s doing that for the right reasons or not and if he’s acting in a way that he feels morally, is the way to go about things. Um, but yeah, it’s-it’s certainly part of his adjustment period that he’s gonna go through.

Sooo I started to read other articles. I didn't after reading the ones that came out right after the episode that justifiably got everyone upset.
This one from tv insider had Tim saying this:
Moving on to Buck and Tommy’s breakup, talk about your approach to it. Why was Tommy sure that Buck would break his heart?
Tommy’s older and Buck is very new to this, and whether Tommy was correct or not, I think what he felt like was exactly what he said: I’m not your last, I’m your first, which is a special thing to be, but as Tommy says, it doesn’t usually end up being the same thing. And I think based on what we know of Buck, he’s maybe not wrong. Buck’s a little impulsive when he’s feeling a certain kind of way. He’s like, move on in, bring your couch. So I just think because Tommy’s a little older and wiser or maybe at some level he feels like he doesn’t deserve Buck, I don’t know. But I think he accurately diagnosed Buck. Buck’s still figuring himself out, and boy, that would be quite risky to move in with that guy as much as you would love to.
That does seem to be Buck’s go-to, which isn’t the best.
Exactly.
Are we going to see Buck single for a significant period of time now? Is he trying to figure out what he wants really out of a relationship?
Yeah, I think that’s right. As Tommy said, you’re still figuring yourself out, and his options have increased by 50 percent of the population. So knowing Buck, that’s going to be choice overload. He’s got to navigate that with a little self-awareness.
--
So they definitely planned for this. That's what this reads like...they wanted to break them up so that they could send Buck through a period of exploration. Tim says everything Oliver said here in much nicer terms. His view of Buck is so...Idk, it's like he sees Buck as a kid that still doesn't know what he wants. And he decided to put that view right into Tommy's head too. It's a little jarring I guess but this show...has it ever been consistent?
What sucks is that 8x05 was written like they were doing so well. And then right off the back with 8x06 we have warning signs in the date scene with the girl that approaches Buck and how Tommy sort of shrugs off Buck checking her out. I really do wonder where hot waiter fit into this and I'm so glad we didn't see Tommy like checking hot waiter out or something. But I guess that scene was there to sow the seeds. We have Buck spiraling because of the Abby thing and we have Tommy maybe not realizing but reinforcing for himself that he's a stepping stone for Buck and being okay with it in the status quo.
The way that Tim speaks about Buck asking Tommy to move in, he makes it seem like Buck is just barreling in without thought...like if they went through with it Tommy might be proven right. But then what is the point of the scene with Josh where Buck is right on the cusp of an "I love you" just to then be like no actually Tommy knows how this ends and he can read Buck and knows they're not forever. But Tommy is not a mind reader.
Where there is hope is in that Tim doesn't outwardly say anything about Tommy being gone for good. As someone else pointed out the Lou interviews were done by buddie journalists with a bias so there is a question to how much that colored what we got and why they were so determined to close the door fully. Also...why did we get exit interviews in the first place for a character that only had three episodes...it's so odd.
The writers made a point of leaving this open. Do I think we'll get Tommy back any time soon. No. But after the doom and gloom and the time to mourn this a bit I want to be positive and there is really no knowing. Tim says he thinks Buck will be single for a while...okay fine...picture that being the rest of this season.
Buck won't just jump into another relationship...and Oliver gets his Buck slut era 2.0...what if S9 brings back Tommy? What if this is the long game...or at least the thing they can have in their back pocket if Lou is available later on to come back. But that's not something they can promise or that they can commit to and Lou isn't on contract clearly and Oliver wouldn't know if that's the plan...hell even Tim probably doesn't know if they'll do that. Or I'm giving him too much credit because as we've seen this season storylines have been rushed to close up at breakneck speeds so it would be an anomaly for him to prolong something like this.
All this to say, showing the network and Tim that bucktommy matters to a lot of people and that Tommy matters...it may just make a difference.

So a couple of days ago, I decided “you know what? I might as well try my hand at human designs for the Cookies”. Granted I only did the bust because I’m lazy. But yeah that’s what this is
And in addition to that because I thought it’d be fun, I gave myself a rule that the characters can only have natural skin, hair and eye colors, unless their character would make relative sense to have dyed hair or colored contacts, as you can see with Princess and Wildberry
I drew Dark Choco and Dark Cacao first since they’re my hyperfixations, they should be the first ones I draw. And then I drew the Hollyberry family because with their pink and blue hair, I thought it’d be fun to try and change them. But after I finished them, I didn’t know who else to put nor did I have a lot of room, so I just left it at them
I’m just gonna list random things about the designs now
I’m not entirely sure where Dark Choco and Cacao’s streaks come from, but I couldn’t just get rid of them. For Dark Choco, I’d say either dye or stress, and for Dark Cacao, either stress or age (though given he’s had them streaks since a young age, stress is probably the more likely option)
I gave Dark Cacao grey eyes, but maybe I should have gone with black instead. Probably more realistic. And for that matter dark eyes probably would have been the better option for Wildberry too. Hm
I admit, I probably should have gone with a lighter red for Hollyberry, Royal Berry and Princess’s hair, but I gave them that shade since I thought Hollyberry would look good with dark red hair
I really didn’t want to draw Hollyberry’s hair, it was a pain. I’d much rather draw it down, but the updo is more accurate to her, so eh
Royal Berry looks like a barber to me
I made Jungleberry and Tiger Lily’s hair black because I feel like it’s a thing for blue to be a substitute for black, like in older movies and such, so I did it the other way around, and also it wouldn’t make sense for either of them to have dyed hair
This was my first time drawing Jungleberry and I quite liked drawing her
Drawing Princess here was what finally got me to understand just what her hairstyle is supposed to be. I know I’ve seen it before, I think in Berserk, but I don’t remember who had it so I can’t show you a picture of what I mean. But I get how her hair works now
Speaking of her hair, I admit, I took liberties with making her hair curly, especially since no one else in her family has visibly curly hair, but to be honest I think I did that because I have dark red coily hair that’s also curly. So I was probably just taking reference from myself. I also share dark brown eyes, but I have no trace of her melanin, I am very pale
I made the red/pink eyes brown since I figured those were the closest colors and a good translation, but I ran into a problem when I realized Jungleberry already has brown eyes. So just shh there, ignore it
I don’t know how dreads work I apologize
In my head Wildberry dyes his hair red because that’s Hollyberry’s hair color, hence why it’s red and not pink
And I think that’s about it. I’ll probably do more of these since this was fun, but I don’t know when or who I’ll do next

Yakuza Fiance ep 3 Manga Comparison
Ep 3 of Raise wa Tanin ga Ii aka Yakuza Fiance, just aired, and you know the drill there are some important and/or fun things that slipped through the cracks of adaptation. Since I am SUPER normal about the manga I got everything here under the cut. Warning these are fan translations cause I'm lazy.
So for reference yes the manga chapter does start like that but there is a little back and forth in the scene overall including this
Tumblr media
Kirishima actually has to beg more for Ayano (thats her name) we loose some good bits, such as Aya being a bikini model and having a boyfriend she complains to him about, and how Kirishima describes their situation like its your bog standard high school romance.
This scene was really cut down to be like a cold open there's more but there's this
Tumblr media
We get more insight into Kirishima's situation with these women and confirmation there are more and that they are aware. Another thing is Ayano does help Kirishima work through some thoughts and cutting down their back and forth looses some of that. (maybe i'll do a whole thing on this later)
I actually really like how they did the first sleep scene in the anime except
Tumblr media
Why did they leave out the line where Yoshino guesses it was Kirishima? Its so odd but again this scene of Yoshino in the kitchen is longer in the manga
Tumblr media
Most importantly it makes clear a full day has passed and that she was trying to sus out info from him at school. Also she ponders if he poisoned her water filter before she has her freak out that he's so crazy it's becoming normal for her.
Overall the second sleep scene is done fairly well I like how it's animated the manga just gives you a feeling its going on longer as Kirishima makes a bunch of braids in her hair so her jumping makes more sense but also we loose this bit
Tumblr media
I dunno I just think Kirishima worrying about the futon and her hair is funny.
Honestly I'm actually surprised how closely the convo they have after this is so close to manga. I'm glad cause it's important I could talk about it but thats not what this is for (getting so many ideas though)
So again there is more back and forth about Kirishima calling Gaku (where he says he thinks he shouldve gone in person to apologize) and more on Yoshino's dad, with her asking how much he's looked into her and Kirishima admitting it was a bit. Yoshino also states it was because her dad was normal she had some hopes of being with a normal guy, and that all the men in the house feel like fathers or brothers to her which I do honestly think is important for her so I'm sad thats out. Its not alot but it is some added context.
so ok this guy at the summit, (excuse my shitty picture)
Tumblr media
Yeah he's not introduced in the manga at this point, every other character is there but for some reason the anime added this guy to the scene. Like he shows up WAY later and doesn't do much had it pointed out to me but its still weird. Anyway surprisingly the meet is very accurate to the manga thought for sure they cut something but no instead of ending with Akime giving an ominous stare we get this guy glaring at Renji, and like I think it really undercuts the scene cause it makes him seem more important than he probably is.
Anyway the scene with Hotei is again longer in the manga and like the scenes with Renji a lot of the warmth is lost again you don't really get a sense for their dynamic like technically there's nothing really missing but it doesn't quite have the right feel.
So I am very surprised with how much the cut from the SHouma shopping scene. Such as this
Tumblr media
Like Yoshino is literally dragging him around cause he can't be bothered and Yoshino points out he went through the trouble of booking a room but not packing luggage, grade A Shouma logic, (also why that added bit in ep 2 makes zero sense) But we also loose some more explanation as to why he's here now.
Tumblr media
Its not needed needed but it does provide extra context. What I am upset with is they didn't do the pay off for a set up in ep 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like the weirdly cut out the part of their conversation about the bullying Yoshino got in ep 1 explaining who she sent the picture to and why she did it. It's so weird honestly cause again this shows us how close they are and what their dynamic looks like. Also it just makes the conversation flow more naturally, in the anime is a little odd.
Well at least they kept Kirishima's weird ass basement.
Again though a LOT is cut from the dinner scene with Yoshino and Shouma the conversation is a lot longer.
Tumblr media
She brings up Kirishima after rolling down his sleeves (which is funnier in the manga) and again the flow is better. Yoshino gives a much more in-depth explanation about why she can't really describe him to Hotei. But there is some character stuff here in her feeling comfortable enough to tell Shouma, also he makes some funny faces.
Anyway the explanation about the gang stuff is kinda the same overall but the manga feels less expositioney about it what with how its presented and how it feels more like a conversation
Tumblr media
It just feels less like Shouma is talking at her but rather with her.
So again I don't get why the anime keeps removing the humor from the series like this
Tumblr media
The idea that Yoshino is dying from over eating but Shouma wants to get some ramen and how he compares her to a sea lion, like its fun anime why do you seem to hate fun. But again a LOT of context is taken out of the scene from between Yoshino complaining about Kirishima to Shouma saying he'll kill him
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like the pieces are here but they arent quite fleshed out enough, the anime makes it seem like Shouma just offered to kill unprompted but Yoshino brings it up first in the manga and the way she talks there he does sound more dangerous.
The convo again is similar but lacking in depth, both because its shortened and because a lot of the build up is missing. Honestly theres just sooooo much in this ep I'm not surprised but I am surprised where its cut from. The ending is exactly the same with Kirishima and Shouma meeting (again why that bit last ep??) with the exception of missing out on this golden undercut
Tumblr media
Like seriously why take out these jokes anime? this better be in ep 4

happy anniversary to me and Julian :3 a few months ago i made a post that i will write a fic for the occasion and i DID and i reached the character limit in my google keep note because it was that long. it's almost 4k words!! that's how much i love him guys!! i don't know how i suddenly went from writing little 1k fics to this monstrosity but i'm happy with how it turned out🤞🤞 it's under the cut because it really is huge and also disgustingly mushy, be careful!!.....
i should start titling my fics or something but i don't really want to.. maybe they'll get their titles somewhere in the future
———
Rowan sits in the palace parlor, half sunken into the soft pillows of the sofa. His hand raises to pick at his lips, before the magpie on his shoulder screeches at him and he's forced to drop it back into his lap. The countess sitting across from him chuckles softly and speaks up for the first time in a longer while.
"I do agree with Bluebell. You're much too anxious about the whole situation." Nadia imparts and takes a small sip from her teacup. The magpie seems smug at the fact someone's agreed with her.
"I know, I know that... But are you sure the gift isn't too small?" Rowan asks and starts unconsciously picking at his nails, earning him another loud screech.
"A ring of all things is an accurate gift for an anniversary, I assure you."
"He doesn't even wear jewelry, this is silly..." he mumbles out and rubs his face with a frustrated huff.
Seeing Rowan's distressed expression, Nadia sets her cup down and walks over to sit down by his side. The man straightens up a little as she places a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"Can you tell me what this is really about?" she inquires with a slightly raised eyebrow.
"Maybe it's just... A commitment thing..."
"...Could you elaborate on that?"
"I just mean- Are promise rings the right amount of commitment? Will he think I'm a hypocrite for giving him a ring when I've previously told him that I don't want marriage-?"
"...Dear, do you hear yourself?"
Rowan is about to start picking at his nails again before Bluebell hops down into his hands and he begins to preen the bird instead.
"I sincerely doubt that Julian would even be capable of such a thought. That is, when it comes to you, at the very least."
"I guess..."
"Rowan, I'm certain that Julian hasn't changed his mind on that agreement. He'll love those rings." Nadia assures, carding through his hair gently and putting unruly wisps back into place.
Sighing softly, Rowan rests his head on her shoulder, her fragrant perfume calming his nerves "I know how silly I sound, I'm sorry..."
Nadia chuckles fondly "This is quite an important milestone for you, it's natural to be nervous about it. Especially since this is your first time celebrating a relationship anniversary."
She glances down to notice that the man is now squeezing Bluebell's body rhythmically. Not that the fluffed up bird seems to mind, she seems a little drowsy in fact, as if she's entirely used to it.
"But you know, if you're this worried that I can't imagine just how troubled Julian is. Remind me when do you have to head back?"
Rowan's eyes move towards the big clock standing in the corner of the room. "In a few hours... And yeah, he's probably spiraling right about now. I bet he got me something beautiful though..." he says and smiles softly.
"Would you like to take a stroll in the garden? You could use some fresh air to relax before your rendezvous."
"Yeah, let's do that... Thank you, Nadia." he nods before reaching over to finish his cold cup of tea.
~~~
Portia stumbles through the streets of Goldgrave, Malak constantly pulling at her sleeves, leading her somewhere. She was really hoping to get some garden work done before the raven showed up and caused a big ruckus. All she managed to deduce from the urgent croaks is that Julian apparently needs help with something. The bird dives down to pull on a strand of her hair once more.
"Give me a break! I told you already, my legs aren't as long as Ilya's-" she yanks her lock back from Malak's talons with a small grunt, "Ugh, if you want me to bail him out again, I swear he'll be going to his little date with a black eye."
She's a little confused when the bird perches on top of her head not a few moments later.
"We're stopping? But this is..." she trails off and looks up. This is undeniably the building where she's watched her brother's stage performances before. But why would he be in the community theater of all places today? She makes her way through the entrance and soon enough she can hear some distant labored grunting, followed by a loud frustrated yell. Malak takes off from her head and flies further through the corridor, then audibly crashes into something with a thud.
"Where were you? I was starting to think you've abandoned me." Julian can be heard talking to the raven the closer Portia gets to the backstage. When the scene comes into view, her jaw drops a little.
"You're stealing a piano." Portia's tone isn't questioning in the slightest, somehow this does seem like something he'd do.
Julian straightens up and whips around to face his sister with a mortified expression "Stealing- I'm not stealing, this is a perfectly legal operation! And what in the world are you even doing here?!" his gaze shifts to the raven sitting on top of the said piano "I told you I don't need any help! Traitor..." he huffs hopelessly and leans against the instrument. The longer Portia looks at him, the more she notices just how exhausted he looks.
"...Don't tell me you were trying to carry a piano all by yourself. Where would you even bring it?"
"It's a gift, Pasha! I spent months trying to renovate this old thing so I could give it to Rowan! He's been taking those lessons from Nadia and he's already so good... I wanted him to have a piano of his own at home." he whines out and runs his gloved hand down his face.
"What- Why didn't you tell me that earlier? I obviously would've helped!"
"Because- Because it's my responsibility! I got the gift so now I have to carry it home! And it's fine because I'm sure you have your own chores to do today and I'm strong enough to drag this thing back to the shop myself. Thank you for your concern." having said that, Julian pushes the piano forward and it makes an outrageously loud creak as it moves against the wooden floor.
It makes Portia grimace. She can't bear the thought of the piano being massacred like this any longer.
"Stop! I'm not letting you drag it on the ground all the way there. You'll just ruin it, idiot." she grumbles and walks around the instrument, managing to get a pretty good hold on it from one end. She shoots Julian a meaningful look, urging him to grab the other side.
He sighs in defeat before quickly laying his discarded coat over it and they manage to lift the piano off the ground together. It makes Malak croak in surprise but he doesn't move an inch. Manoeuvering it through all the corridors leading outside is hard work, so they take a break once they've carried it out into the street.
Only when the daylight reaches the piano can all the intricate details finally be seen. Portia runs her hand over the carvings depicting a bunch of wildflowers and animals. The fresh coat of varnish makes the instrument glisten in the sun.
"And you're telling me you're just allowed to walk out with a piece like this? This must be worth a fortune!"
"A fortune is what I spent on getting it into proper shape... The exterior might be beautiful but the insides were all jumbled up. Not that I know much about pianos... I spent a long time trying to find all the necessary experts to fix it." he huffs out again and rests his elbow on top of the instrument, swinging his hand at Malak to shoo him off of it "Ride's over, I'm not letting you scratch it up..."
The bird relents and moves to perch on Portia's shoulder as she circles the piano, her eyes boring into the insane details. She brings the fall board up so she can see the keys as well.
"...Oh my god, is this ivory?"
"Uh, I'm pretty sure it is, yes. It's supposed to be durable, thankfully none of the keys were missing-"
"This is the kind of stuff they have at the palace!" she exclaims and looks at them in awe.
"It's- It's not too much, right? Will he think I'm out of my mind for getting him a piano with ivory keys...?" Julian suddenly seems a little less confident about his present than a second ago. But before his sister is allowed to answer, his eyes dart up and he winces when he notices the sun's position.
"Drat, look at us just standing around here, we don't have much time! We might have to take those tight shortcuts..."
"Maybe we won't have to if you just grab onto the piano, Ilya..."
"Right, yes!" he squares his shoulders, quickly stepping over to take the lead in the piano-carrying assignment. Once they both get a secure hold on the instrument again, they lift it up and start walking through the streets.
In this situation getting some surprised stares from people is inevitable, but Julian is not concerned with that at all. Instead, he keeps glancing up, clearly stressing over whether they'll be able to make it to the shop and carry the gift inside in time, before Rowan returns from the palace.
He glances behind briefly to notice that Malak is still comfortably rested atop Portia's shoulder. Then he speaks up, slight concern apparent in his voice. "Malak, friend, do you think you could check up on Rowan? Er, just to make sure that he's not going to be inconveniently punctual."
The bird seems mildly inconvenienced at the fact that he has to leave his place snuggled into Portia's soft hair but doesn't need much more convincing. Leaving some stray feathers behind, he takes off into the air. Without the ravens frequent croaking, there falls a silence between the siblings. Portia notices Julian's tense shoulders and can't resist to tease him a bit.
"...You know, maybe he will think you're a snob for the ivory keyboard."
"Pasha, don't stress me out!" he yells back at her, trying to hold back a smile at the sound of her jesting giggle.
While in the air, Malak obediently stays in pursuit of Rowan to distract him if needed, but shortly after spotting him on his way out of the palace, he notices the man seemingly taking the scenic route anyway. Hopping his way along the roofs, the raven notices him stop somewhere in the corner of the town square.
Hugging his knees to his chest, Rowan stares down at particularly stout, shiny beetle. His familiar jumps towards it again but he stops her with an index finger, poking her away.
"I told you it's too fat for you to eat. I don't want you to choke, sweetheart."
A grumpy screech.
"...I'm not going to cut it into pieces either. There are people here."
Another screech.
"What? I'm not tempting you! Can't I just stare at a bug in peace for a moment?" the tension between his brows increases a little as he keeps his eyes on the beetle "I'm not nervous anymore, I just need a second, okay?"
Bluebell hops forward and flops onto her back, trying to distract Rowan.
"Your little baby tantrum won't fix anything, you know."
The magpie seems offended now. She opens her beak threateningly...
"No, hey, don't you dare do that-"
A series of deafening screeches tear through the square as Bluebell tries to put a stop to Rowan's overthinking in her own way. He scoops her up from the ground and starts shushing her frantically.
"Stop screaming! We can go to the shop, you can take the stupid beetle, just don't make a scene!"
She stops immediately and wriggles out of his grasp to pick the beetle up by one skinny, squirming leg. It makes Rowan frown a little.
"...Just make sure to chew it well, please." he mutters and finally continues walking.
~~~
Already inside the shop, the Devoraks try to carry the piano up the stairs and not fall to their deaths in the process. A firm boot planted on the creaking step, Julian pushes forward as Portia leads the way, carefully climbing backwards.
"Just a few more Pasha, you've got this..." he reassures and angles his head so that he can see the short corridor the staircase leads to.
With a series of collective labored groans they manage to pull the piano onto the top floor before almost collapsing against it.
"Now that's a workout! Gosh, I barely feel my calves... And hands... And..." Portia trails off, raising her hand to pull her damp with sweat hair away from her face.
"I think I was seconds away from breaking my spine there..." Julian gasps and quickly pulls his gloves off of his hands, throwing them onto the piano "Just one more... Curve... I swear I'll get you such a nice thank you gift, you're the best sister in the whole wide world..." he seems to be getting a little teary-eyed but he quickly composes himself for the sake of the mission.
Portia seems to nod acknowledingly at her brother's emotional speech as she tilts her head to look downstairs at the sound of slight tapping "I think Malak's back..."
Julian turns around and observes as the raven wanders into the shop through the back door, his talons clicking against the wooden floor. He caws a few times which makes Julian grimace.
"Alright, I have no idea what that meant but I will assume that Rowan is already near... Are you okay to keep going, Pasha?"
She gives him a quick thumbs up and shakes her hands off, then grabs onto the piano as if she didn't just drag a half a ton instrument up some very steep stairs. Carrying it into the bedroom doesn't take near as much work as all the previous routes but once it's sitting in it's designated place, the siblings just slide down to sit on the floor for a short moment.
"You were right, you're always right, I wouldn't have managed without you, Pasha..." Julian weeps out and quickly pulls her into a hug.
"Yes, you would've been dead a hundred times over if it weren't for me." she wraps her arms around him with a grin, feeling just a little lightheaded from all the carrying she did today "I should get going, don't wanna disturb you loverboys." she snorts and pokes at her brother's waist.
"Ah, allow me to escort you then, dear sister!" he gets to his feet—his back cracking loudly—and upon wiping a stray tear from his eye, he pulls her up by the forearms "Good to stand?"
Portia nods. It's a careful walk back down, both of their legs are still quite wobbly after the endeavor. Upon opening the door for her sister, Julian is surprised to find a spooked Rowan on the steps just outside. He staggers back a bit as it suddenly opens.
"Oh, Portia...? What are you doing here?" he asks with growing worry on his face at her disheveled state.
She just smiles and dives in for a hug, making the magpie on his shoulder startle and fly up to the rafters instead "All will make sense in a jiffy! Enjoy your date!" with one last squeeze, Portia takes off, turning around to wave goodbye.
Locking eyes with Rowan, Julian promptly pulls him inside and up into his arms with a beaming smile "Lover, you're here at last!"
"Julian-! I wanted to- Why... Why is your shirt soaked...?" Rowan stares at him with a confused expression, his feet still awkwardly dangling above the ground as his partner holds him.
"Ahaha, I promise to freshen up before our dinner... But what were you going to say?" Julian inquires with a smile and sets him down gently.
"I, uh, wanted to give you my present first because I thought about it way too much and... Just wanted to get that off my chest, you know? Is that okay?" Rowan squeezes Julian's hands gently, looking up at him with an unsure smile.
"Yes, more than okay! I'm dying to see what you thought of."
"Should we go upstairs-?"
"No! Not... Not yet. We, er, can go sit down in the back room, if you'd like."
Rowan widens his eyes with surprise again but doesn't mind going along with the idea. Once they're seated next to each other, he speaks up again "Before you see the gift, I just wanted to say that... Even though we already had that conversation about whether we ever want to take our relationship to the 'next stage' and came to an agreement, I still wanted you to have some kind of confirmation, I guess... I know how important that is for you and I really wanted you to know that I'm very, very serious about this, so..." with one trembling hand and a soft sniff, he fishes out a small pouch out of his vest's pocket and unties the thin string around it. He can feel Julian's eye boring into him as he works on opening it.
"...Hold out your hand, please."
Julian obeys and gives him his hand, palm facing up. His smile is bright with anticipation until Rowan twists his hand gently and takes it into his own instead. A shiny, sliver ring comes into his view, with what seems to be a small, green gemstone embedded in the middle. His jaw drops wordlessly as his partner slides it onto his finger. He inhales a bit before Rowan stops him.
"Don't say anything yet! Just a second!" he quickly reveals a second, matching ring, with the same design as the first one, but the colors seem to be different. It's gold with a red gemstone. Rowan holds it up to the one that's already on Julian's hand.
"These represent us, see? I had the gemstones switched so that the green reminds you of me but you can still wear silver. Ah, and- And you don't have to worry about your gloves either! Yours is actually adjustable so- You can wear it whenever you want!" he raises his eyes to check on his partner's reaction and his nervous smile softens when he sees some tears already streaming down his face, along with a huge grateful smile. Julian takes it upon himself to take the matching ring and slide it onto Rowan's finger before pulling him into a very tight hug.
"God, you really thought of everything... Thank you, love, they're so beautiful-" he voice cracks just a little before he buries his face in Rowan's hair, who's already exhaling in relief because the gift did turn out to be a success.
"There's just one more thing, actually." Rowan gently dries Julian's teary cheeks and makes him look down at their hands again "I'll let you do the honors. Touch one of the stones, hm?"
Once he gently taps his own ring, the other one lights up in a soft glow. It makes Julian gasp softly "This is the single most romantic thing you've ever done, I'm pretty sure."
"I can think of a few more... And it's a simple enchantment, really..." Rowan mumbles with a shy smile, still observing the rings that are finally in their rightful places.
"I'd love to just stare at these forever but... Now I really want you to see what I got for you. You're going to love it." he lowers his head to leave a sweet kiss on Rowan's lips before helping him to his feet.
They walk up the stairs together until Julian covers Rowan's eyes in front of the entrance to their bedroom. It makes Rowan tilt his head in confusion a little.
"Just keep walking, darling, I've got you."
"Yes, okay..."
They stop in the middle of the room and Julian makes Rowan face the direction of his gift.
"Are you ready?"
"I hope I am." Rowan answers with a small chuckle. When Julian's hands drop from his eyes to his shoulders, his eyes settle on the piano at last.
His reaction is a little delayed, but once it kicks in, it's nothing like Julian's controlled few sobs. He bites down on his lower lip and absolutely breaks down. The thick tears streaming down his eyes make it hard to keep his eyes on the piano. It makes Julian worried for a split moment.
"Er, these are happy tears, yes? You haven't given up on the art of music, right?" he asks and steps in to take Rowan's face into his hands as he keeps sobbing loudly. He only manages to nod firmly and pull him into a hug to keep crying into his shirt.
"A whole fucking piano... You're absolutely insane..."
"Now, there's the reaction I was waiting for! I was a tad worried that you were just pretending to like it." he remarks cheekily and runs his fingers through Rowan's hair gently, "I should mention that I couldn't decide on what little bench I should get to go along with it so we can go buy one tomorrow, if you'd like. There's a ton of colors of the cushioning to choose from, apparently."
"Damn it, I should've bought you a vielle instead... We could've been playing a duet right now..." Rowan weeps, attempting to dry his face while the tears just keep flowing.
"Oh we'll play many duets yet, dear. And anyway, you can get one for me on our next anniversary."
"And let me guess, to upstage the piano you'll get me a boat next year...?"
"Oh shush, don't spoil it!" Julian rolls his eyes playfully "We'll have time to talk about the future during our dinner which we don't want to be late to, eh?"
"Yeah, future... We should start getting ready." Rowan wipes is eyes into his sleeve and pulls Julian's face down gently to kiss him "Happy anniversary. I love you."
"I love you too, Rowan. Happy anniversary."
