Thing I notice in fandoms is how nonwhite kids are often held to even higher standards or unfairly demonized for existing.
Let's start with Avatar cuz y'all no white ppl don't exist in that universe but it's worth mentioning. In fandom Katara is often made the butt of a joke; in the comics Azula was written HORRIBLY.

I see it in TGAMM. Like Andrea, Ollie also came out of a toxic household yet fans put him down for "getting in the way of ships" even going far as to claim he and Molly are siblings (despite them coming from entirely different families and ethnicities). Even after Ollie is changing fans won't give him a chance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In HSMfandom people claim Sharpay was the real victim & Gabriella was the bad guy who mopes and whines all day, ignoring that Sharpay tried to steal Troy away (who she didn't even really like, she liked Zeke more). She forced the entire crew to work on a night of a big performance, and was essentially a bully all 3 movies. Yet SOMEHOW stans blame Gabbi. She was the one who actually had her priorities straight and refused to play Sharpay's mind games. Yet Sharpay gets excused bc she's pretty and pink and owns it. Yes media and society demonizes girliness, but Sharpay was toxic as hell and needed a few harsh lessons. Gabbi was the victim. It's spelled out in the text..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even in Amphibia there's a small section of fans who has Marcy and claim she's a manipulative liar. Not showing compassion for her when her actions came out emotional distress and she had to face the consequences. Sounds familiar?
In Descendants Uma and Audrey get the brunt of hate when they were victimized by Mal at some point, yet aren't given the same empathy even in canon. There's other posts that talk about this unfair treatment (as well as the double standards between Mal and Ben).
And trust me this isn't the first nor last time kids of color are unfairly castigated in favor of the "better" white kids. And not just race; religion, gender, class, disability mental illness etc, all of those also major factors in how fandom and canon perceive and write certain child characters.

Fic snippet #9: NonWhite
After the first few times, Non started to open up to White. He started talking more about himself, about the things he liked, the things he disliked. Horror movies and books and manga. Loud noises and school and the place that had come to be his new home. His prison, he called it. White never said anything when he did. He also mentioned how he hated the guy who got him into this job more than once. At first indirectly, small cues in between their discussions, but later more openly, with more conviction behind his words.  White listened to everything carefully, offering a bland remark here and there while cataloging all the things Non was telling him. It seemed important to do that for some reason.
It's happening folks. I aim to spread the NonWhite agenda one way or another. Unfortunately, I can't even hope to have the fic ready before ep11 comes out (which may or may not include ep12, we shall see), so I decided to share a snippet before we get to see what White's deal is. If we're lucky. BOC hasn't been predictable so far and I don't think they'll start being now heh.

"An important read about how conservatives are finding ways to use foster parenting as a means to steal babies, now that more traditional adoption pipelines are drying up.
It's particularly disturbing that so many of the cases involve the theft of nonwhite and especially Native kids from their biological families."

It's so ridiculous when social media plataforms censor people advocating against violence towards queer, non-white, non-christian or disabled people when we call someone who is a nazi, a nazi.
These assholes say that they care about minorities but nah, they don't care and we all know they don't, they just play the safe "woke and inclusive" card and censor these kinds of discusions under the guise that they are "offensive" when I don't see how calling a person who encourages violence against marginalized groups what they are, a disgusting nazi, is offensive.
If anyone is to decide what is harmful or what is not it's us, not them.

so you want to get back into reading books but have no idea where to start and disdain booktok (if you get me started on this however i will become an unskippable cutscene so that's for another day). understandable. there is so much out there and it is all so overwhelming and you don't even know what you like now that you've been a decade out of the game. again, understandable. it does not have to be scary. i will help you. below i have created some categories that can get you started.

THE SPEAR CUTS THROUGH WATER by simon jimenez
JADE CITY by fonda lee
THE FIFTH SEASON by n.k. jemisin
THE RAGE OF DRAGONS by evan winter
A MEMORY CALLED EMPIRE by arkady martine
GIDEON THE NINTH by tamsyn muir

i check out and read a lot of these books for free via my local library by using the libby app (you can even add your friends' library cards to gain access to libraries in places you don't live). when i'm feeling like reading via audiobook, i use libro fm!
look, no one HAS TO read diversely. no one is going to be reverse fahrenheit 451'd and locked in a room with no fanfic and only books and not let out until they work their way through the entire literary canon. but reading, and reading widely, and reading diversely, is what teaches people to form their own opinions and question the things they are told. it's why they hang up stuff like "READ READ READ!!" in grade school classrooms.
we live under systems that increasingly benefit from going unquestioned. no, of course reading ASSASSIN'S APPRENTICE by robin hobb is not going to dismantle these systems tomorrow, nor probably even in our lifetimes. but doing it will help set up a world capable of doing it in the future. and until further notice, we are all part of this wretched world. might as well read a good story while we're here.
anyway, i'm reading THE WEST PASSAGE by jared pechaček and the new cmq book this week.

Black and brown femmes I adore you, especially darker skin tones. The way the light bounces off your skin, it's like you can bend the very sun to your will. Don't let anyone ever let you feel like you are anything other than the most gorgeous princess in the room because you are a star and you deserve to shine ❤️

If there's one thing I know it's that White lgbts will ignore any racism within a piece of media no matter how bad or distasteful it is, especially if there's White lgbt ppl in it, and any criticism of the racism is met with the White fans getting mad. They expect you to baby them with "this thing is really really problematic and racist but it's okay if you like it" but if you say you hate it for its racism, then they insist you're just a hater and a big meanie, especially if you aren't white
