Putting this here bc i dropped an umineko review in someones replies #unprovoked sorry oomfie and i want this in my tag but like. the whole concept of narrative, stories creating “locked boxes”*, people’s differing interpretations of phenomena creating for all intents and purposes different realities, etc has been explored in so many different pieces of media some of them extremely famous & well established** so like. If you write an 80h of playtime, higher wordcount than war and peace EPIC on the subject you better have something very special to say very convincingly. rather than dilly dallying repeating the premise of your story over and over for 80% of tje runtime and, when its time to put your money where your mouth it, dissolving into an anime nonsense flavored fight-with-special-attacks power-of-friendship spectacle of an ending that tries to tug at my heartstrings in order to distract me from tje fact that it has the substance of tissue paper. as it stands, bitch i could have read all tje works of Pirandello in this time with time left over and i wouldnt have been subjected to the horror of those ugly ass outfit designs.

on the other hand ive been reading othello today and i know it's shocking ive read 23 shakespeare plays and it took me this long to finally get to othello. in my defense the riverside shakespeare (1973) is a hell of a drug. i have always been reading the plays in no particular order other than what my whims directed me to. i read the winter's tale last year because my professor mentioned it offhandedly. one of the first comedies i read was all's well that ends well not because i knew anything about it, or even heard anyone say it was good, but because i liked the title and i knew there was a character with my name in it. i read all over the place but yeah by far the most significant play i still hadn't read as of a week ago was othello, and now i'm more than halfway through it and. yeah.

i haven't read a pure shakespeare tragedy in three and a half years. ive mostly been reading the histories this year in particular. i think i might generally neglect the tragedies because i find the comedies and romances to be more whimsical and fun, and the histories to be more devilish and bloodthirsty and action-packed, however that is to my regret because my whims have not leaned more towards a tragedy in all that time. i still watch them on occasion but that's different.

i haven't felt this deeply connected to the characters in his plays in such a long time, my god. i absolutely love othello and my heart is aching. desdemona can do no wrong. cassio is poor and unfortunate. i want to rip iago's eyes out. oh my god wow.

Ultimately, I elected to ignore the question because I have a feeling that person would pick a fight with me even if I worded my answer in the most polite way possible.

Like unless there's some trans subtext I missed, Ophelia doesn't engage in gender fuckery like Shakespeare's crossdressing characters. If anything, Ophelia seems pretty gender conforming, especially for her time period.

I have nothing against trans Ophelia headcanons, mind you, but nobody likes headcanons being shoved into them as absolute fact. That is annoying at best.

So, I made an AMA post about my AU version of Ophelia from Hamlet on Reddit for fun.

And the first question I got is asking why I made her cis.

How am I supposed to respond to that question? Like I'd seen trans Ophelia headcanons on this site, but I don't know how common said headcanons are.

Frostheim

Hhhmm, maybe they'd be responsible for the play! Frostheimers are the ones that are super cultured and fancy since they're all rich lol I think they'd have all the resources needed to buy beautiful costumes and props. Maybe they'd do some Shakespeare play like Hamlet, but I wouldn't put it past them to do a musical too, like The Phantom of the Opera, complete with a huge chandelier falling down :0

Vagastrom

They would be the ones responsible for the games!! All of those festival games like card flipping (menko), shooting, throwing, ball scooping, fishing yoyo, garapon (lottery machine) and other puzzles. I think Vagastrom students would have a lot of fun challenging festival-goers even if it's not a physical challenge lol. The whole place would be filled with the sounds of people having fun! Btw, Sho would probably open a little booth with snacks ofc hehe

Jabberwock

A safari exhibition, obviously. What better moment to sell tickets for a tour around the dorm than during a festival? I'm pretty sure they would go all out, though. Maybe the tour could be done at night (if the anomalies agree lol) and everything could be lit by fairylights. The caves would have ambient music, there would be wind chimes everywhere, and bubbles would be flying around to reflect the lights (courtesy of Towa). It'd be like a true fantasy experience for anyone who decided to participate!

Sinostra

They would run a cafe for sure. Romeo would NOT pass up on the opportunity to make some money. Also, it's not like Sinostra would care that much about the festival, so it'd be best to participate by doing something they're already used to. Since a lot of people would flock to Darkwick due to the festival, including kids, they wouldn't be able to sell booze nor anything of the sort, but they'd have great food, including a little bit of Italian cuisine – pizza, carbonara, lasagne, candied fruits, gelato, torrone, espresso... people would leave with the belly full and wallets empty.

Hotarubi

They would do plenty of presentations!! Odori, taiko, koto, shamisen – everything that's related to japanese traditional culture, they'd give a huuuuge show. A lot of people would flock to Hotarubi to watch Subaru give a little snippet of his abilities as a kabuki actor too, and it'd probably be one of the most visited dorms in the whole campus! I think they'd also give a few mini workshops of tea ceremony, ikebana, puppet theatre, and origami.

Obscuary

A huge, beautiful and extremely creepy haunted mansion/labyrinth!! Obscuary is literally the perfect place for a haunted attraction. The Victorian-esque visuals of the dorm would attract a lot of people who want to test their courage, especially with all the rumors about a real werewolf and a real vampire living in that place. The mansion would be eerily silent, just the sound of creaking wood and the whoosh of "ghosts" flying around to have people on their toes, so the jumpscares would be even more efficient.

Mortkranken

They would 1000000% do an interactive medical exhibition. The students could guide the visitors throughout a day in the life of a scientist/doctor! Showing them which instruments they use for surgery (even teaching how to suture wounds); which meds are useful for certain diseases; how to measure blood pressure and auscultate heart and lung sounds and so on and so forth... a little LARPing as a doctor for an afternoon hehe

Noa and Mae as Romeo and Juliet in the Next Planet of the Apes Movie?

Here's why a potential "love story" between Mae and Noa, whether explicit or simply implied, may not be such a terrible idea.

Why? Because Shakespeare told me so, that's why.

"When in doubt, it's from Shakespeare....or the Bible." At least according to a book I had to read for high school, lol.

The biblical references in Caesar's trilogy have been pointed out multiple times already, and these movies have also been described as Shakespearean tragedies. So I thought, 'ok, what kind of Shakespearean tragedy will we have this time around?'

I'm first gonna start off with Hamlet in the Caesar trilogy. I'm also gonna mention other popular movies that are based on Shakespeare's plays. Not necessarily because it's concrete proof that this is what will happen in future POTA movies. This is me simply picking up certain storytelling beats and patterns I've noticed in some of my favorite movies.

It's not 100% the same, but there are some similarities. Also, this isn't anything new. Many have pointed this out before, but I love talking about this stuff!

The Lion King, Black Panther, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes are loosely based on Hamlet. A king or rightful heir is killed. Usually by an evil uncle, cousin, or family member. For some reason this always results in them falling off a very high cliff.

Everyone thinks they're dead, the evil relative takes power, and everything kinda sucks. There is not enough food in the Pride Lands under Scar's rule. Killmonger burns the heart-shaped herbs. Koba leads the apes to war against the humans.

The rightful ruler spends time in exile, recovering from their wounds and trauma. They might even get a visit or have a recollection of their dead father.

Then the rightful ruler comes back from the dead, challenges the usurper, and regains their rightful place upon the throne.

Now lets take a look at their sequels.

The Lion King 2 and Wakanda Forever share some similarities. They both follow another one of Shakespeare's popular plays, Romeo and Juliet.

Like the Montagues and Capulets, we have two rival kingdoms in both movies. We got the Pridelanders and the Outsiders. We also got the Wakandans and Talokanils.

The two heirs/rulers from both kingdoms meet. They hate and don't trust each other at first, but then they start to have compassion for the other. In Kiara and Kovu's case, they fall in love. Namor and Shuri don't fall in love, but after Namor shows her his underwater kingdom and what he has to protect, she softens and begins to understand him more. (They even got the whole Hades and Persephone thing going on, who are a couple in Greek mythology, by the way).

There are losses on both sides. Kovu's brother was killed while going after Simba. One of Namor's people was killed when Shuri was rescued by Nakia, and Shuri's mother, Queen Ramonda, died after Namor's attack on Wakanda. (Starts nervously eyeing Anaya here...)

These losses make things worse, by the way.

In the end, both pairs are able to bring the fighting between their people to a stop. The Outsiders are welcomed into Simba's pride. The Wakandans and Talokanils stop fighting after seeing their leaders return together.

In the end, they realize that they're the same. That they can't let hate and fear of the other side cloud their judgement.

Kiara tells her father, "A wise king once told me we are one....Look at them. They are us. What differences do you see?"

Shuri tells Namor while she spares his life, "Vengeance has consumed us. We cannot let it consume our people."

And I think this goes well with one of the core themes of these POTA movies. The apes are a mirror to humanity. We the audience are seeing us through them, and the characters in the movies themselves must come to the realization that they're the same.

Like when Caesar tells his son, "I always think ape better than human. I see now how much like them we are."

Maybe something similar like this will happen with Noa and Mae and whatever fight will happen between apes and humans. While I'm all for a good romance, it may end up being more like Namor and Shuri's case. There's something there. The tropes are present, but they don't fall in love. (At least not yet. Please Ryan Coogler, give me Nashuri endgame in Black Panther 3, hehe).

This is just a theory, by the way. This doesn't have to happen, but I just think it'd be neat. There would be differences though. What those differences would be, idk, but whatever happens in the next one, I can't wait!

Besides, they don't have to die. Things can be a little more hopeful for our two heroes 🙈

Alrighty fam I’m doing it. I am finally going to watch David’s Hamlet!!! Tbh I’m not the biggest Shakespeare person….so my only experience with this play was reading bits of it in school and then seeing Ben in it in 2015. Ben was great but tbh I remember more about seeing Phantom of the Opera on that trip… I’ve always been more of a musical theater girlie than a Shakespeare girlie lol. But I ADORE David’s Much Ado About Nothing so I have high hopes for this one.

Binderary book 1: a long-favourite EXR fic. I love wild Les Mis AUs and I love Shakespeare and this is all of that in such a lovely lovely form. Stage manager Enjolras is inspired. Also, I've been frothing at the mouth to use my special blackletter fonts and go suuuper overboard designing and this was Perfect for that purpose.

Design and Construction Case: Flat-back case binding with bradel board covers and spine. The spine cloth is Hollander's pearl linen in charcoal grey. The painted titles were done in Amsterdam acrylic ink in silver, with a pair of scissors because I don't own a painting brush and likely never will. The cover papers are printed on 80gsm white printer paper and glued with a regular Elmer's glue stick and PVA on the turn-ins, and the whole case is sprayed with workable fixatif to (hopefully) preserve it longer-term.

Covers: The front and back covers were designed in Photoshop. The centre image is a William Morris pattern, and the top and bottom little circles are Renaissance printer's ornaments (pngs by the lovely @helle-bored of Renegade Bindery) that I vectorized in Illustrator (Illustrator and I were sworn enemies until this month. Now we're forced friends. Like enemies to lovers).

Insides: Endpapers are a William Morris pattern recoloured in Photoshop to be a richer green and red, obv, for EXR. Printed with inkjet on 80gsm printer paper and glued to gold cardstock, and sewn into the textblock. Endbands are pre-sewn from Hollanders, dyed gold with acrylic ink to match the endpapers.

Typesetting Typeset was done in InDesign. This is a one-shot with scene breaks, so to match the theatre theme of the piece I replaced the horizontal line breaks with flagged scene numbers. I tried to strike a balance in the typesetting between classic Shakespearean aesthetic with the blackletter drop caps and cover fonts versus what you might see in a theatre script book with the monospace accents. The title spread uses a transparent decorative frame, again from Helle's collection; the large box in the middle with the title was part of the original frame and then I duplicated and resized it for the author name and my imprint.

We All Do It, or, the Mistakes Section I somehow managed to print the cover papers nine inches tall and didn't see a problem with it until they came off the printer. Truly who knows how that happened. I was working on the case at two in the morning and cut the spine cloth the wrong length three separate times...earned the measure once cut twice badge big time for that one. The endpapers were an ordeal and a half for real. What I learned: print them too big and glue the cardstock to the back, then trim the paper to size, not the other way around otherwise you'll end up with big ugly gaps where the trimming was a few millimeters off. Whoops.

I'm particularly pleased with how the covers here came out so here's closeups. Also, the arc on the spine that you can see in the endband on the last one is really pleasing to me lol I fought a war trying to get the flatback hinge calculations right.

Modern!Aemond x Reader

Summary: Your best friend Helaena and her older brother Aegon decides to surprise you with a blind date on your winter break with her younger brother, Aemond. Two Shakespeare nerds form a strong friendship but is there more? (The answer is yes)

Ever since the accident, Aemond knew he was different. That everybody stared at him with curiosity and fear. Usually the latter. With a jagged scar running over his face, and a dazzling sapphire in the other. It’s no wonder to him why they gave him those looks.

Aemond sighed, slid his hands into the pockets of his black leather jacket, and braced himself against the cold wind that would hit him as soon as he walked out the door. He was on his way to meet up with his brother and sister, Helaena and Aegon. Surprisingly, they met someone whom they both agreed that they needed to introduce to Aemond.

He still didn't really know why he accepted the invitation. Well, he did, but was confused as to what was the why. At first he agreed to meet up because Helaena put on a pouty face and begged him to. Then Aegon kept pestering the hell out of him, constantly texting him and sending annoying ass Snapchats. But as the day to the meeting creeped closer Aemond couldn't help but feel curious, hopeful even, that there might be someone else to talk to.

Aemond was quiet; he studied hard and put all his energy into his work, but didn't have company outside his family and close family friends.

He picked up his pace to get to the cafe faster, the blistering wind slapping him in the face. Thankfully, he got there without freezing his ass off. Aemond entered the cafe and was instantly welcomed by a cozy warmth and the smell of coffee. He barely had time to take in a deep breath when Helaena called out to him.

"Aems! Over here!" She shouted. Well, not really shouted. Helaena never raised her voice above her usual delicate tone but Aemond could hear her anywhere if she was calling to him.

Aemond gave a soft smile to his sister and rolled his eyes at Aegon, seeing him sprawled over the table, most likely feeling the effects of a hangover. Aemond quickly got his black coffee before joining his siblings at the table. 

"I'm so excited for you to meet Y/N, she's an absolute sweetheart!" Helaena exclaimed in a sing-song voice. She leaned closer to Aemond and gave him a sly smile, "and she has a very soft spot for Shakespeare."

Aegon groaned without lifting his head. "Did you seriously just say something about Shakespeare?" 

"Be quiet and be nice when she gets here," scolded Helaena. 

This time, Aegon rose, putting on the grandest voice he could muster. "Methinks the lady doth protest too much."

Helaena glared at Aegon while Aemond closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

He couldn't help himself, he had to correct him. "While the sentiment is the same, that line is frequently misquoted. The correct line is actually -"

"'The lady doth protests too much, methinks.' said by Hamlet's mother from Hamlet."

Aemond's eyes went wide as he saw the girl who finished the sentence for him. She was right behind him, how did he not notice?

She gave Aemond a shy smile. "Hi, I'm Helaena's friend, Y/N. And I guess I'm Aegon's friend, too."

A high pitched squeal erupted next to Aemond. Helaena never makes such sound unless she’s extremely excited. She shot up from her chair and nearly tackled Y/N.”

"I can't believe you made it!"

"Of course I made it, you know I always pull through for you.”

Helaena pulled out of the hug but kept her arm around her best friend.

“And I'm not proud to admit it, but Aegon did help a bit with easing the nervousness of meeting up with…" 

Y/N's eyes locked in on Aemond. She had never seen a guy so beautiful and it made her heart flutter a bit. His silver hair fell down just below his shoulders. Against his all black attire his hair and his eye beckoned her attention. 

Eye. Only one. A vibrant violet eye, but still only one. In place of the other eye was a black eyepatch that sculpted his face perfectly. What the eyepatch didn’t cover, however, was the angry scar that marred his face.  

"Meeting up with you. Yeah, hi, um… I'm Y/N. Sorry, I already said that when I interrupted your conversation. I just get really excited about Shakespeare, you know? And there's so much of his work to digest and analyze and his work is so prevalent even today and can really help actors because his work is just beautiful and -- shit, I'm rambling aren't I?"

Aemond couldn't help but smile at her babbling. It wasn't every day that he came across someone who gets as excited over Shakespeare as him. Even though it was brief, he noticed how Y/N's eyes lit up when she mentioned Shakespeare. He could tell she was nervous but her passion covered anything that suggested otherwise.

“Y/N is here for a few weeks on her winter break. Initially it was just gonna be me and her but then Aegon brought up that our fellow sibling might need a new friend,” Helaena explained. 

Y/N reached out her hand to Aemond. “Once again, I’m Y/N. I’m going to assume you’re the famous, brooding sibling your brother and sister talk so highly of.”

Aemond went to run a hand through his long silver hair. Y/N watched him, completely entranced by his beauty. Y/N knew she was fucked. She knew she was fucked when she interupted their conversaion and laid eyes on him.

“Yeah, I’m Aemond,” he took her hand and gave her a little shake. “Glad to know my brother and sister speak so highly of me to others,” he chuckled.

Y/N’s eyes went wide. “Oh fuck, I’m so sorry, no that's not what I meant. I meant that they talk about you a lot and I think you're interesting and oh shit." She proceeded to flop her face on Helaena's shoulder while her best friend patted her head.

Aegon grinned at Aemond. "See? She's just your type. Rambling and all."

A muffled noise came from Helaena's shoulder.

"Y/N's right. Shut up, Aegon."

Aemond looked at his siblings and then her, Y/N. He awkwardly coughed to break the tension. 

"So…uh…" Aemond had no idea what to say in this situation so he blurted out the first thing that darted through his mind. 

"Ya like jazz?" Silence fell as Aemond registered what he said. "God fucking dammit," he immediately snapped his head to Aegon. "Shut the fuck up, Aegon."

"Seriously? That's the first thing you say to someone? 'Ya like jazz?' from the Bee movie?" Aegon was almost falling out of his chair from laughing too hard.

Aemond was too focused on trying not to punch his brother in the face that he didn't notice Y/N had lifted her face from Helaena's shoulder and softly giggled with her.

“Okay, I’m not gonna lie, that definitely caught my attention, and in a good way,” laughed Y/N. “Really, it’s a nice break from my stream of consciousness.”

Aemond turned to look at Y/N and gave her a small smile. His face now had a tint of color and went down the sides of his neck. 

“Glad to be of service, then,” he said, almost giving a theatrical bow before deciding against it. Instead, he opted for a cheeky wink.

Aemond and Y/N locked eyes and for a moment it was just them. A violet eye meeting warm brown ones. 

“And I think that’s our cue to leave, Aeg,” muttered Helaena. She knew Aemond and Y/N would hit it off, but not this quickly.

Aegon clapped Aemond on the back. “Okay, little bro. Have fun on your date!”

Aemond snapped his eye to Aegon and Y/N to Helaena.

“I’m sorry, a date?” Y/N asked Helaena.

“Yeah…sorry, Y/N. But you know you need to go out more, especially after that... incident, and, well, here’s my solution to that. You can’t stay cooped up in your apartment by yourself all the time.” Helaena looked at Y/N and then Aemond. “Both of you.”

Y/N drew in a deep breath then turned to Aemond.

“I’ll give it a shot if you do.”

ok so I think the whole "erased from the Book of Life" thing mentioned by the other arch-angels is foreshadowing. it must be, it was mentioned twice and it feels like such a heavy threat to float around otherwise.

I personally love the idea of metatron realising Aziraphale's performance as arch-angel is being severely impacted by his relationship to Crowley and deciding to be pro-active about it, mainly by wiping Crowley from existence.

now this would mean SEVERAL things.

With Crowley having never have existed, Shakespeare might not be as popular, if you remember his miracle to get an audience for Hamlet in season 1. this would mean a whole shake-up of the literary canon (which as a bookseller Muriel would notice and mean they could be involved, always a win), plus a noticeable difference in language seeing as Will popularised so many idioms and phrases.

obviously the main plot of the show would be entirely changed but I'm not really bothered with thinking about the specifics of that. what I am bothered by is number 5 - I think Aziraphale physically wouldn't be able to forget Crowley. I think he'd just short-circuit, so we'd be in this excellent place of him half-remembering him and knowing something is horribly wrong, and then starting to try to figure it all out, and bring Crowley back.

I finally actually watched that Loki s1 bts clip where Owen quotes the first line of Two Gentlemen of Verona and. WHAT DO YOU MEAN he doesn't have any particular connection the play he 'just' took a Shakespeare class in college. He's so clearly trying to laugh it off like it's not very impressive but that's sure not working on me Owen, I can barely remember which classes I took let alone verbatim quotes from plays I'm not even that into WHAT

Thank you anon because that's something I've been going on about for years ever since the s1 Assembled ep dropped lol, the fact that Tom just casually mentions Owen knows most of Hamlet BY HEART is wild but of course he shrugs it off as usual insisting it isn't true before dropping that line from Two Gentlemen of Verona verbatim?? Like okay tell me more about what you don't know then 😳

He has very possibly the most literary mind I've ever experienced and it actually drives me a little crazy that somehow isn't a more well known or acknowledged fact about him. After the first season of Loki ended I thought I'd just be going through his many films I hadn't gotten a chance to watch yet but instead got just as captivated with interviews where he was detailing his home libraries, referencing lines from even the most obscure novels or scenes at the drop of a hat and falling even more in love with how that's clearly shaped his sense of humor and delivery.

It's also why I wish he didn't laugh off the idea that he himself could've played Hamlet, which he likely did since as we've noticed he's quick to downplay his skills and talent, but also because that's how most of the general public would react if the same question was presented?? And he isn't especially comfortable on live stages so theater probably isn't a medium he's considered in any serious fashion but for me at least it's far more fascinating to see the take an actor more well known for comedy would give a dramatic role of any kind and I don't doubt he'd be incredible at any he set his mind to 🥰

I reread a lot this year!

The Kingdom of This World by Alejo Carpentier was part of my vacation reading this summer.

The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien. Still rereading The Two Towers.

The Lais of Marie de France, technically. Last couple times I've read them, it's been in poetry translations, and this was a prose translation.

Hamlet by William Shakespeare, accompanied by watching and re-watching some different adaptations.

The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare, which I read for a class and then reread for another class :P

...actually, I reread a lot of Shakespeare this year. Twelfth Night and The Tempest were also rereads for me.

Wise Blood by Flannery O'Connor was reread slowly from January to September as a means of mentally retaking it from a professor I didn't like lol.

The Princess Bride by William Goldman, because I had a book-craving for it out of nowhere.

You Wouldn't Want to Meet a Body Snatcher! by Fiona MacDonald, because I got nostalgic for it after reading a lot on the 1832 Anatomy Act.

4: Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?

I'm not generally a poetry person, but I found the chapbook Plainsongs by Darrell Bourque in the library book store and bought it on a whim. I'm glad I did because I really enjoyed it! Makes me want to read some more of his poetry!

16: What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?

The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer, without a doubt.

20: What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?

Y'know, I don't think I read anything that was released this year. I think the closest I came to that was Dylan Goes Electric!, since A Complete Unknown, which I'm planning to see either later this year or early this year, is supposed to be based on it.
