i was talking about this with my mom and she was telling me about when my parents were still dating she went to new zealand for 3 months, my parents talked maybe once a week, on pay phones

and yk i'm grateful for modern technology but i think people are too reliant on it, it's why i don't really have online friends anymore, i just don't want to be on my phone, texting people.

honestly some of y’all want a significant other so badly and can’t understand why you can’t find one, but have no sense of boundaries or healthy expectations of what a relationship is like. in a committed long-term partnership you get left on read, you wait for texts back, and you can forget about each other when you’re busy. sometimes you fall asleep without saying goodnight and sometimes you’re too caught up to text each other before 6pm. that’s how it is. thinking that you can’t be deeply, beautifully in love and still wait more than “1.75 hours” for a text back is such an unhealthy and unreasonable expectation of what love is, and you shouldn’t be in a relationship if you can’t allow the other person to exist on their own apart from you. if you’re projecting your anxieties and insecurities onto a partner who doesn’t even exist yet, then you aren’t ready for one.

As a child, Tom followed his father around everywhere. Or at least, he tried—there were places he was forbidden from entering, places that only the secret agents could follow.

So Tom tried. He gave his sitters the slip and learned how to avoid the agents. Just like a spy! Tom often dreamt of being a secret agent, wearing sunglasses and carrying a radio, shooting bad guys while running very fast.

As head of security, Frank often caught him and always shouted words like 'spoiled' and 'brat', but Tom wasn't afraid of the stupid old man—despite the threats, no one was ever allowed to lay a finger on Tom.

The rest of the secret agents that surrounded Father did their jobs in rotation. Tom recognized all their faces even if he did not know their names. He hated that they got to stay with Father when he couldn't, and often played pranks on them, or tried to get them in trouble with Father.

The youngest agent was an especially soft touch—he always smiled at Tom, even when Frank yelled at him for letting Tom run around where important business was happening.

"He's just a boy, Frank."

Tom was not just a boy. He was offended! Father told him he was special and important all the time, that he would grow big and strong to run the family business like a king. The secret agents should accept his impending rule over them.

The problem was, this agent—Harry—was the only one who sometimes kept his mouth shut whenever Tom snuck in. Father would deliver his great speech to a room of suits, and Tom got to hide in a cabinet and listen to all of it. Afterwards, Harry would come to the hiding spot and let him out, make him promise not to tell.

"I could get in trouble for this," he would say, finger raised to his lips. "So shh."

Tom would laugh at him. "I can get you in trouble whenever I want!" There were lies he could use, fake tears that he could well in his eyes. Tom knew about all the places on a boy his age that other men were not supposed to be touching. One word in Father's ear, and Harry would be shot in the head.
