I just wanted to say that I really love your art and the new Mighty Nein character art is 🔥🔥🔥 I especially love Fjord's tattoo and the pattern inside Caleb's coat.

I was wondering if you're allowed to share with us the pattern inside Caleb's coat?

Oh, the coat. So obviously Caleb has not changed his look much since level… 17? The last time Ari drew him. And Ari drew his coat with this really interesting damask lining. It looked like silk or satin, with a beautiful shining pattern. I sort of vaguely remember it as a magical item, in game, but now I can’t find proof of that.

Anyway, I wanted to put in a lining that referenced Ari’s, but wasn’t a direct replication.

So- way back during the first EXU, I made a quick magic circle design for Opal to sling around in a group shot. It had a secret Catra/Adora easter egg in it as a little nod to Amy Carrero. And I ended up just stamping that magic circle design into the lining of Caleb’s coat, fully intending to go back and make it a damask pattern. But then it kind of stuck? I didn’t want it to literally be a Catradora magic circle, so I sketched a geometric pattern on top of it that sort of made the whole thing into a cohesive but subtle pattern. And then there was a bunch of like lighting a stuff, which further obscured the source material.

So the answer is- Caleb’s coat lining pattern is about She-ra, Princess of Power. True story.

🔥 about each member of the mighty nein (instead of sending you a million separate asks lol)

Fjord - this is actually the only character from all of Critical Role where if someone does not like that character I am immediately done with anything they have to say. Ashton and Vex are my favorites from C3 and C1 respectively but I get not being particularly into what they're doing even if I disagree, but like, if you don't like Fjord you either have no understanding of the idea of characters being defined by their settings and narratives and vice versa and therefore you have no media analysis statements worth hearing; or you made a snap judgement based on like 20 minutes of campaign 2.

Beau - I wish the circlet had gone to Veth; I liked Beau's arc a lot but she started as one of my favorites and was later surpassed by a number of other characters and I think it was in part because I liked her getting things the hard way and also doing more with the Cobalt Soul and Dairon than she ultimately ended up doing.

Caleb - I think I kind of covered it with my post about his trauma recently, namely, I think he's a fantastic character and Liam did a great job and also whenever someone acts like Caleb is objectively correct at all times or should have murdered everyone in the assembly it's a MASSIVE red flag.

Veth - weirdly unpopular in this fandom but I like her more as a halfling. Also, I actually think arcane trickster was a phenomenal fit for Sam mechanically even though he wants more spells and would love to see him do another 1/3rd or half caster.

Jester - I feel I've covered my main one repeatedly (people LOVED to talk about her agency and the second she kissed the wrong person she was suddenly a stupid baby girl who didn't know what was good for her) so I think my other one is that as with all of Laura's characters she is much more fun, especially early on, if you lean into the fact that she does say a lot of shit that makes people really uncomfortable or annoyed instead of trying to turn this into a SHE LOVES SO HARD AND NO ONE LISTENS because both can be true, your love can come out in ways that people are very annoyed by, this is how cats feel all the time actually, and so much of Jester's arc is figuring out how to share this love in a way that other people can appreciate without losing her own personality in the process.

Caduceus - I've also covered this a zillion times but I will say it again, Caduceus deflected so many attempts to check in with him and he does not want to like, fix Molaesmyr, he was not neglected, he was built out to be a character who was more of a low-key support guy and Taliesin did an incredible job with that.

Molly - honestly my unpopular opinion remains that I simply found him very well built and a great concept and also irritating as hell, and the Nein's response to him was valid but the fandom's post-death lionization was very tiresome. I'm genuinely not sure the party could have bonded the way they ultimately did if someone who was throwing around "enthrall" like that were still around.

Kingsley - now, while I don't mind if you dislike Kingsley, acting like Kingsley and Molly are the same character is actually equal to the not liking Fjord thing; that's an instant "this person's interpretations of media are so bad I am blocking so as to not accidentally see anything they have to say."

Yasha - I'm not sure I have any unpopular opinions? I do think she is at times underappreciated but I also think specifically she is, like Caleb, a victim of the terrible and weirdly common fandom idea that the only way to move on from abuse and horror is by killing everyone and everything that hurt you rather than rejecting violence and finding your own path and your own meaning.

Essek - sticking specifically to his role in the Nein, again, I love Essek and he is a member of the party and also he is an NPC and acting deeply offended that he doesn't get the same treatment in terms of comic books or merch or appearances in one-shots is very childish.

Many Pokémon just so happen to enjoy fighting! It’s exercise, it’s (supposed to be, there *are* unethical fighting rings undoubtedly but those are like. Illegal? I’m pretty sure?) fun, it’s a good bonding experience for trainer and Pokémon, it makes sure they know what they’re doing if they are ever in danger, etc!

Idk if anyone has explained the gym league to y’all yet? But it’s a legal regulated place to battle with your pokemon and see how your battle prowess compares to those who do it for a living! (typically one does this on a "pokemon journey" that is a sort of coming of age thing in a lot of regions, but im fairly certain you can challenge the gyms at any age)

and theres definitely pokemon who DONT battle and have no interest in such! it really depends on both trainer and pokemon. there are unethical trainers, but id say those who are unethical about it(being too harsh on pokemon, being abusive, etc) are both generally looked down upon and i also am pretty sure you can report them to an officer jenny(police officer)

Hmm...that's kind of a difficult question??? But, like. Pokemon are other creatures and beings that live alongside humans!!! They come in a variety of shapes and sizes- and some of them do bear a resemblance to inanimate objects, yeah!!! Or possess them, in some cases. It's almost like- the word 'Pokemon' is a big blanket term to describe a BUNCH of different kinds of creatures!!!! And then there's types and stuff too, that we also use to classify them further. Does that make sense??? LOL

And yeah!!! Pokemon battling is super popular!! It's pretty much everywhere in a lot of regions. As for GETTING a Pokemon...well! You can always go into the wild and try catching one yourself!! With like, Pokeballs and everything- or if there's a breeder or adoption center nearby, see if you could adopt one? Starting off, the first option would probably be cheaper, but you'd DEFINITELY need to familiarize yourself with like, what kinda Pokemon are around. So you don't wind up with a Pokemon you can't take care of, right???

Overall I love his growth! In his relationships with the m9, especially Beau! Being practically unable to talk a few words with her without a heavy misunderstanding, sharing awkward apology hugs, to sharing whole conversations and building each other up... being the empire siblings... Going from being alone and unattached and privately afraid and hiding from Ikithon, to begrudgingly accepting he has real friends now, who he can't save from his backstory, and who are ready to fight for and with him... And saying he is back on his feet... Dare I say poetic cinema.

As for Caduceus,

his divine interventions PLURAL,

him dropping absolutely raw lines on Trent Ikithon,

him being cute with Luc,

and his journey with Fjord, mentoring him and converting him to becoming a Paladin of Melora.

🔥 give me your spiciest cr opinion, compadre.

This will not shock you in the slightest, Friendo, but I am super duper sick of every character only mattering to the fanbase by their significance to Caleb. Beau, his sister. Jester, his manic pixie dream girl. Nott, his mom. Yasha, his buddy in social awkwardness (I guess?). Caduceus barely mattered in the slightest until it turned out he might make a good therapist. At least with Fjord they’re a dumpster fire of alpha male bad decisions, so it shakes up the assumption of “how can this character deal with Caleb’s emotions for him.” And obviously this isn’t everyone, but god is it everywhere. 

I joke about shipping Fjord/Caduceus, mostly, but half of the origins of that were “God if Caleb and Caduceus had these interactions they’d be the new Widomauk (which by the by I also can’t stand)” and spite is a powerful motivator.  The dynamics of the party that have nothing to do with the Sad Boy are just as important as the ones that do, but it barely ever gets talked about.

I guess the other one is the usual bit of me being sick of Nott getting the slide by because Sam is the funny man. I like Nott, but she can actually be quite personal when it comes to her insults (she was downright cruel to Beau in front of the tower) but because half the time because it’s Sam beating a joke into a pancake it just gets brushed off. Frankly treating Nott’s behaviors as “just a joke” does a disservice to her character. I mean hell, the only things I saw about the whole “Nott killed Cad” thing were more focused on Cad’s forgiveness than Nott’s apology, as though the idea that she might have done something wrong can’t be dwelled on for too long. She screwed up. It’s fine. Let her deal with consequences for screwing up. And yes, Cad, according to Taliesin, probably isn’t mad (though does he know, he was unconscious?) but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have some things to think about.

🔥 the fanon interpretations of both Caleb and Essek as individuals, and shadowgast as a ship

oh good one, and I'm going to keep this brief but I could elaborate outside this meme should you wish to keep it going at a later time.

First off I'd sell almost any fanon interpretation of anything for a single corn chip, and that's facts; also I like the canon of all three of these things.

Specific to Caleb: fanon interpretation suffers from the same issues that plague all Liam characters which I've touched on before which is that people are like SAD BOY and ignore every single other quality about him(and also ignore any like, tragedy, pathos, subtle horrifying details, etc in every single other character present) and Liam is usually like, putting in quite a lot of work to make a character who is more than just Sad (TM).

Specific to Essek: really the crux of why fanon sucks so much is that he is both a young smart person who was given really inadequate answers and is very relatable to anyone who has been a grad student; and also he did make a number of immensely selfish and short-sighted decisions that fanned an already smoldering ember into war; and also that he is very endearing once he starts to reckon with what he's done but that it doesn't negate what he did. And a lot of people cannot hold this all in their head so they either are like SWEET BABY WAR CRIMINAL which is boring or they're unironically saying he should be executed for treason which is an overreaction given that he is fictional when the answer is that he is a good fucking fictional character who plays a fantastic role within the story.

Specific to their relationship: meanwhile, the reason fanon on their relationship sucks so much is literally people do NOT engage with the relationship as it is (frequently long-distance; possibly open; ends due to lifespan differences though likely not for many years; Matt and Liam did not in fact break social distancing to openly make out on the nonexistent table which bothers people for some reason) and they overlay literally every other nein relationship onto it. Like, every other relationship has some degree of white picket fence and kids (and I mean this neutrally, not as a bad thing). I have seen fics in which Caleb and Essek fight Uk'otoa and Fjord is like...barely there and it's like guys do you give a shit about Caleb and Essek (Essek, who...probably doesn't know who Uk'otoa is)? or do you actually want whatever Beau and Yasha, or Fjord and Jester, or Veth and Yeza have going on but for some reason need to puppet this through Caleb and Essek. (not exclusive to Caleb and Essek in terms of how again, like, the vast majority of fanon sucks, but bc they have an actual unique and interesting relationship that defies molds it's particularly rough out there).

I hope you don't mind if I use this, as I am wont, to slip in a number of other opinions and elaborate on some other beliefs I hold about story and actual play and narrative; I will also answer the question somewhere within it.

I think the story of Molly's death truly illustrated for me how much people's discussion of things like actual play and narrative is colored by their personal opinions and honestly how frustrating that can be. Obviously your meta is going to be flavored by your opinions, but any argument I've seen that Molly's death isn't good for the story rests on the assumption that a successful story relies on Molly being alive because the person holding that opinion really likes him - it's a completely circular argument. And it's valid to like him, but it means that for anyone for whom Molly was not their favorite character, this argument is meaningless because like. It is a better story when his death is left to stand.

Anyway: When I say it's a better story, I do not think Molly should have deliberately been killed off or anything. I am saying that once he died, the story becomes first about failure and fear of mortality, as half of this scrappy bunch of people who have to fight for something realize that actually yes the world is sometimes just as harsh and unfair as they've been acting, and it becomes about misplaced and powerless guilt for the other half who literally could not do anything to stop it and yet all somehow feel responsible. And they come together, and slowly work through it, but it colors their experience throughout the entire rest of the campaign.

I was often frustrated by the Mighty Nein's hesitancy when it came to boss battles, but also? It made complete sense! Molly died when they went into battle with incomplete information - of course they want to gather more information! It defines how intensely they respond to each others' (temporary deaths): part of why the Nein had only one resurrection ritual and the rest were revivifies as compared to Vox Machina was that they had two clerics with them at all times, but I think Caleb's intense reaction to Nott's death and Jester's similarly intense one for Fjord's comes from the fact that they are so aware of the consequences. This party was irrevocably changed by Molly's death and undoing it later on feels kind of cheap - getting the development without paying the price.

I think the decision Matt made to have Cree resurrect Lucien from Molly's body was an excellent one as it removed that possibility from the table for a long time and cemented the potential finality to the party. I also understand completely that the Mighty Nein would attempt one last time to resurrect Molly, because they are not aware that they are characters in a story and they just want to bring him back in the end, but my god is that the most fortuitous and poetic natural 1 I've ever seen, and I have endless respect for Taliesin's choice not to bring back Molly but rather to be a new person who shares some traits.

I think we see this influence in some ways most literally in Caleb - Liam confirmed that it was pretty up in the air whether he'd use the T-dock until close to the actual scene where he made that choice, and I think that final failed resurrection was a major factor in helping him come to terms with the finality of death and with his perceived failures and being able to let go, although the process had already been started.

In the end, I think the Mighty Nein's story turns into one best described by the seminal 90s song Hey Jealousy: the past is gone but something might be found to take its place. All these characters had every reason to be stuck in a difficult past and all of them managed to strike a truly impressive balance of going back to something not dissimilar than where they started, while still profoundly changed as people, specifically because they accepted the death or change (and, as any tarot reader or person made to study Jungian archetypes in school can tell you, death is often used to symbolize change).
