wait just realized that I owe one more "most egregiously mischaracterized character" answer still and like. the problem is I don't know if there's a character who isn't frequently egregiously mischaracterized but I will say Keyleth might take the cake specifically because on one side you have the violent hatred of her as a female character with cool abilities and on the other hand you have people who will not brook any criticism as backlash and so they erase anything interesting (self-righteousness, being naive and annoying, concerns about living a thousand years that go beyond lifespan angst in a romantic context to a sort of existential dread because she is like, 21) from her initial depiction, they do not know how to handle her anger and so you get the most "wow she's so complex, sometimes she gets angry, an emotion women don't have usually", and most importantly she serves as like, an extremely clear example of someone who is like I have deep and personal beef with the Raven Queen also I think killing her would be dumb as shit and that really does not make the dumb as shit crowd happy and also because of how hated Keyleth was and because now in C3 I think she is (appropriately!) being used, to an extent, as Matt's NPC mouthpiece of HEY YOU SHOULD TRUST THIS CHARACTER'S JUDGMENT people put words in her mouth so that they can pretend they do.

💛💙💜🖤 for TLT!
I truly have no idea what counts as an unpopular opinion in TLT because this fandom is so big and I only see a corner of it, so forgive me if some of these AREN'T unpopular :D
💛: What is a popular ship you just can't get behind, and why?
Genuinely Griddlehark. I ship it a normal amount (actually, I ship it a lot!) but I'm out of step with a lot of what is in the AO3 tag. I'm way more into the messed up drama part of it.
💙: Which character is not as hot as everyone else seems to think?
Harrow isn't hot. Which is part of her appeal. TO ME.
💜: Which character is way hotter than everyone else seems to think?
Ianthe. I live in a Ianthefucker eco chamber but I'm aware vaguely that people outside of it don't think Ianthe is that hot. They are wrong.
🖤: Which character is not as morally good as everyone else seems to think?
Coronabeth is using BoE for her own gains 💖 she doesn't want to destroy the Empire she wants to murder the Emperor and put herself on top 👑 which is mighty sexy of her frankly

☕️ + cos I have Kathryn opinions today, in my ranking of wives I believe Kathryn Howard was probably the second or third most compatible with Henry as a wife and general nature of her.
I think so, too. People think it's Jane because he sanctified her in retrospect, KH was afforded more influence, though.

🔥 video games
im completely sick of people blaming problems in games on, like, The Laziness Of The Devs. it's untrue 99% of the time if you're talking about anything other than, like, the most cynically-produced shovelware imaginable, & it reflects a total unwillingness to engage with the actual realities under which games are made. like, gamefreak or sonic team or ubisoft or whoever can truly work under horrific, soul-crushing crunch conditions for months because the publisher needs the game out for christmas... and when the result inevitably has cut corners, we're going to call them lazy for it?? all i can conclude is that some people are just unwilling to disentangle bad art from Personal Moral Deficiency in their minds lol
#ask meme#indigoing#is this even an unpopular opinion? idk it seems like it is whenever i glance at the online discussions lmao

RUO Meme: Robotics
the thing is. ultimately. computers are coolest when they're used to do robotics. that's the point. sure, you can be a computer toucher. but getting the computer to touch you your world? that's where its at.
like its one thing to do abstractions on the computer and use the computer to talk to the other computer to give you real brainworms but when you use the computer to run a forklift that's when you feel that adrenaline of seeing a new world edging in the most visceral way. more controversially i think all intelligence is necessarily embodied – materially. that's the real answer to moravecs paradox.

🔥Foucault
foucault is worth reading but you have to actively read marxism back into his work where he carefully cut it out otherwise you will end up with what i call Terminal Foucault Poisoning where all power is abstract and metaphysical and everyone is a cop

💔💛💚
💔: If you had to remove one major character from the series, who would you choose?
Joe fucking West. He makes my skin crawl for so many reasons -Not telling his daughter that her mother is alive, pushing his foster son to pursue a relationship with his foster sister, controlling his daughter's life in everything from what kind of career she could go into to whether or not she should know about Barry's identity to -again- encouraging a relationship between her and her foster brother.
💛: What is a popular ship you just can't get behind, and why?
I think I've mentioned this before, but Bruce/Selina. It doesn't make any sense to me. They don't seem to like each other at all, after the 'We're on opposite sides' thing is taken away. Bruce/Talia is another one, but it's actually even more confusing to me, but I'm not sure if it's considered popular.
💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?
Okay, I couldn't narrow down my favourite character, so I'm gonna give you several!
Len- Any time he is written in a way that it isn't obvious that, at his core, he cares about people. Not just his Rogues, but regular citizens. Especially kids. This is a man who doesn't particular enjoy violence, but will fuck your shit up if you so much as scare a kid.
Harvey Dent- Harvey and Two-Face are two separate entities. While 'Face is the crime lord mob boss, Harvey himself is so fucking full of love and devotion and an intense desire to be good. And he fucking hates 'Face. They actually hate each other, but he fights him so hard. If you're writing a Harvey and I don't get the impression that he is the saddest man in the world, would do anything from Bruce or Batman, and that he wants to take care of Gotham, then you aren't writing Harvey, you're writing a dude with scars.
Jason Todd- Jason. Todd. Is. A. Dork. This is a boy who steals his brother's toys and whistles innocently. He grins and waves before blowing up a building with a rocket launcher. When waking up bare ass naked with a hot woman, he shuffles around covering his junk while nerding out over her spaceship. He gets bullied by the family dog. He Grrrs at people. He gets all sweet and doe eyed when he's drunk. Stop writing him as a dark grumbly edge lord! He is soft! He is dork! He is baby!
Conner Kent- If you aren't writing Kon as the saddest boy in the universe with identity and self worth issues bigger than all out doors, then you aren't writing Kon, you're just writing Some Guy. He is also not a dumb jock. He is a tiny (*glares at Johns' TT run*) little twink who collects Magic the Gathering cards, is a Trekkie, freaks out if he's going to miss his favourite show, and if he's going out as Conner instead of SB, he usually dresses quietly and in big frumpy clothes that conceal his body (someone let this baby explore his gender, goddammit).
Tim Drake- Don't waste my time if it isn't blatantly obvious that the Timmy you're writing isn't just one bad day away from snapping and raining hellfire and destruction across the land while he stands at the top of a pile of skulls laughing maniacally as the screams of the damned are echoing around him.
Tim Drake, 2.0- Don't waste my time if it isn't blatantly obvious that the Timmy you're writing wouldn't lose a fight with an arcade claw machine trying to show off for his boyfriend.

#critical role#cr1#vox machina#saw an unpopular opinion ask meme going around and thought i'd jump on a grenade#to be clear there's no salvaging the middle of ep 27 lmao but it has some excellent RP moments esp percy and keyleth's convo at the end#i definitely get if you're personally uncomfortable with orion and tiberius thats valid but most of the eps are still good-to-great

🔥 barbara gordon
many people who hate babs hate her for things dick and/or bruce also does, but she does these things while committing a far worse crime (being a woman)
also, batgirl: year one is not a good comic for babs. Secret Origins #20 is infinitely superior

Something about Worm, for the reverse unpopular opinion ask meme.
Worm may just be the work of fiction I've read the most. It is one of the defining works when it comes to how I think about superpowers, and the place of superheroes and -villains in society. It has the great advantage of being written by a single writer with an ending in mind, meaning that all the status quo upsets are allowed to matter, which makes the setting feel considerably more alive than what you see in the big two franchises.
On top of that, Taylor Hebert is one hell of a head to spend so much time in. Wildbow is an incredible character writer, and he really knocked it out of the park with his first main character. Taylor's view of the world is intense, and very convincing in a casual first read. Thankfully, the structure of arcs broken up by interludes allows Wildbow to dip his toes into other people's heads, to give different perspectives and often offer a bit of a breather before getting back into Taylor's head.
The prose is somewhat bland, especially at the start, but I always liked it as a thematic element. The text comes more alive as Taylor comes out of her shell and moves away from her suicidal depression.
Also, and this is the true unpopular (positive) opinion here, the fight scenes are well-written and very engaging! The Mannequin fight, especially, still stands out in my head as something special.

🔥 each member of vox machina
Vax: really the sadboy narrative for Liam has always been stupid but it's egregiously bad that it started with Vax, who is like, sad for maybe a fifth of the episodes and largely because Liam O'Brien's actual mother was dying, like, with all due respect what the actual fuck, fandom.
Vex: I am the founding and probably only member of the "Vex is my favorite character and also I am 100% cool with Colville's depiction of her." The generosity she shows even very early on in C1 is still a generosity borne of some degree of security - they have a keep by then - and I also just don't think you have to like a character to write them fairly. Granted it's been a minute since I read early VMO but nothing stood out to me as out of line with my understanding of Vex.
Pike: repeating myself once again but I like Pike a lot and wish we could have seen more, but because we didn't, people who say she's their favorite in C1 do tend to turn me off in that I feel they're looking for a relatively flat and widely praised character to project onto rather than a character who goes through more messy development.
Grog: I think he's often underestimated and I was guilty of doing so myself, to be honest, until I saw Travis play more and until I personally got better at D&D. Also I still maintain that playing INT 6 sensitively and well is infinitely harder than playing INT 16, all things considered, and this is yet another reason why people should play high INT more often.
Scanlan: Also underestimated; I do understand being turned off by the whole extremely horny playboy thing but as I've said before Bard's Lament is a major litmus test for me: if you think Scanlan is completely at fault here, you are wrong, and if you think he's not partially at fault, you are also wrong.
Tary: I genuinely love him and think he's a great character and one of Sam's best, but while his character arc is strong the Taryon Darrington Arc of the VM Campaign, through no fault of his own (and partly bc I personally think D&D Hell, especially pre-Descent Into Avernus publication, is kind of boring), is one of the weakest parts of the campaign because it's kind of a grab bag of loose ends. With that said I would happily watch more Darrington Brigade-one shots.
Percy: Percy is also generally a litmus test in that it's like. Is he a good person? Eventually I believe he becomes one, and even before that I think he's very sympathetic and deeply traumatized and like, 24, so I get it, but also, who the fuck cares. This ties into the Essek and the Ashton opinions and all kinds of other stuff but why are people so invested in fucking absolving their blorbo of all sins? I want someone who's lived enough of a life to have done some heinous shit because that's fun and interesting and it's pretend and also because then they can have a rewarding character arc by either working towards redemption or coming to terms with who they are or spiraling into tragedy.
Keyleth: I like Keyleth a lot but I am, as this post indicates, far more sympathetic to Vex, and so while I do think Keyleth is a fairly good person she is also extremely sheltered and naive and terrified of doing the wrong thing and I would have, like Vex, wanted to scream at her half the time were I just a random NPC wandering about the campaign. On the other hand C3-era Keyleth? fantastic no notes she has grown up in such an interesting way.
Tiberius: I think we, and by we I mean people capable of separating the art from the artist, can recognize that his concept actually fucking slapped and unfortunately he was played by someone who absolutely sucked in a myriad of ways. I would love to see the alternate universe in which the same general concept (prodigy sorcerer from Draconia who is full of themself) had to face not just the destruction of their civilization but the realization that they were taking advantage of the Ravenites and while they did not deserve to be killed by Vorugal, had done nothing to justify aid from those they had subjugated either. Like, the alternate world in which one of the current cast members or like, a close friend of the main cast (Ashly, Erika, Mary Elizabeth) played this is one I'd love to see.

Tlt:❤️🧡💛💖
❤: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?
John ❤️
🧡: What is a popular (serious) theory you disagree with?
I don't think Anastasia was the last to ascend! I think she was one of the firsts to attempt lyctorhood; IMO before G1deon and Pyrrha did. I think her failure was what made most of the others go along with killing their cavaliers
💛: What is a popular ship you just can't get behind, and why?
Camilla/Coronabeth is mildly popular and not really my thing.
💖: What is your biggest unpopular opinion about the series?
Sorry I'm going to steal the phrasing from someone very smart who said my thoughts better than I could have the other day. (if u see this. hi)
there's a lot of discussion of this series that treats the books purely as though they were like hand delivered from another universe without being written by someone who's in our world and is flawed and capable of making mistakes
basically, this is less about the series itself and more about the fandom framing of it, but I think the fandom could stand to be more.. cognizant.. of the books as works of fiction, instead of taking them as a flawless unshakeable framework whose ideal interpretation is yet to be divined.
Like, I think there's no such thing as overthinking a piece of canon BUT it is possible to overthink authorial intention, because there's no way a single piece of canon can account for all the possible interpretations of it that a fandom will create. This doesn't make the interpretations less fun, but TLT is not a sacred text. Is a book series with memes in them and fandom discussion should spark joy.

Reverse unpopular opinion on:
Ace Attorney
I really really love the way the Ace Attorney games use structure and parallelism to tell their stories rather than, like, conventional plots. The setup and payoff doesn't come from things happening one after another in game- hell, every case basically stands on its own, even each game's Case 4!- they come from building up patterns over the course of the game, so when everything comes together at the end, you feel really smart for figuring it out.
